Thematic Tension Between CMWGE and the Novels

CMWGE both is and is-not a Nobilis game. GMD is clearly written with an eye to approachability: familiarity with the setting behind the setting pays off, but the assumption seems to be that most people won’t have that and don’t need that. One thing I want to talk about at length eventually is the way CMWGE integrates mechanics and narrative, but at the outset of my current game I had no understanding of this phenomenon: it isn’t really spelled out, and the natural behavior of the game is to produce narratives that are, in some sense, typical of RPGs. Your characters are people with certain abilities, rather than characters who are defined, in a mytho-narrative sense, by their abilities, even though to a great extent in Gluubilis games those abilities are constitutive of the person. The most apparent nod to this in the GMD book is in the NPC Entry for The Headmaster of the Bleak Academy, who is “no more than these words and an outstretched hand”. You can play him as a guy with a high Creature of Fable arc, but what he is is a story.

Otherwise, though, what you’ve got is cute and funny anime teenagers, with this kind of… slowly dawning mythic inflection to them, this bigness that as a player you sort of grasp at as they grow into their roles but which probably doesn’t overtake the fact that they are these archetypes. And if you get into Tumblr’s CMWGE fandom, that’s a lot of what you’ll see people engage with. And it’s how we are playing it too! It’s probably the more fun way to play it! It’s, god knows, the easier way to play it.

And then you can go and read the novels and be like, Jesus Christ. Because it’s not that the novels don’t have that, they are consistently witty and adorable (they’re not personally to my taste but that’s neither here nor there) but that inflection point is in a radically different place. There’s a bit in The Night Bird’s Feather (spoiler warning!) where the Headmaster uses the Creature of Fable “Blind” power on the novel’s deuteragonist, Valentina Susonova, to uh… I mean I guess he basically gives her gender dysphoria with it essentially. But it’s an elegant thing compared to most uses of “power” in fantasy stories, and you wouldn’t notice it if you weren’t very familiar with CMWGE’s mechanics, because it seems to naturally arise from what he is, within the narrative. Ditto when you get Jade Irinka’s cameo later or, or basically anything Jasmine Apocynum does in the Fable of the Swan. They’re taking the same basic tools but foregrounding the fact that these characters are gods or more than gods. 

Would someone playing GMD think to use the toolkit available to them in these same kinds of ways, to make the use of these costed and bullet-pointed abilities in a way that feels an inherent property of the character rather than a thing they can do? I mean… maybe? If they were extremely clued in to what’s going on. If they were extremely familiar with the game, and the world. And GMD, as I’ve said, doesn’t require this, there’s a reason that most of the characters have stories about growing into a realization of their mythic role despite beginning at a not inconsiderable power level. But it’s still an interesting dissonance.

The novels are like, semi-canonical, is my understanding? They are like… possible outcomes of the Chuubo’s setup, parallel universes to your home game that you can steal from if you want. And this, I think, is why I don’t like them. There’s a sort of alien smoothness to them, a version of the narrative where characters aren’t fumbling through 20-odd pages of powers trying to remember the one they think would be useful in this situation. And it makes everything feel “more Nobilis-y” to me, with a sort of grandiosity that sits uncomfortably in the largely improvised chaos of a typical home game, where the base and human aspects of the settings’ characters are likely to be emphasized. And this isn’t a criticism! It’s clearly a fact that has been recognized and designed around. Hell, I’m pretty sure there’s even a comment in Glitch about just this phenomenon. And from JKM’s examples of play, I’m pretty sure that her home games do approach the novel end of things pretty often, which I suspect is part of why they’re a) a joy to read and b) frequently called out for being useless. It’s just a comment on how uneasily these two sides of what is ostensibly the same world sit together, for me.

As I said, styles&co better not mention the object in discussion here. They would look like the liberal zionists they are and it would be sad to watch the fans defend it. Plus as a state of mind we don’t care what millionaires and their families think in this blog, especially when they have a totally unrealistic perception of the world.

As for the rest, I understand. The whole “mama defending her son from cyber-bullies” was a proper fiasco. I didn’t see Shawn Mendes’ mom defending his son when he got his buzzcut from the memes on twitter. And Shawn gets tons and tons of hate (even from this side of fandom, even from Harry’s fans).

So yeah, it just is silly as it sounds.

I think I said something wrong, but what I do not know.

I haven’t responded because I had a tonic-clonic seizure, and my rescue medication knocked me out cold— I’m still recovering from aforementioned medication because of its strength.

I’m still a little bit disoriented, and my ability to think is a bit hazy, but otherwise intact. I know my name, the year, where I am, etc.— it’s more in decision-making and things of that nature where I struggle more in the days following a seizure.

I’m also incredibly sore from seizing for 4+ minutes, essentially getting a HIIT workout of which I have absolutely no memory.

None of this is on your end, obviously— I just had a medical event which takes a lot out of me. I’m sorry I couldn’t respond sooner!
