Rabies (2010) dir. Aharon Keshales, Navot Papushado
★★★★/5
Rabies, or Kalevet, is a Israeli slasher film centered around a serial killer hunting in a desolate forest. Several groups of people, such as a teenage tennis team and siblings Ofer and Tali, find themselves caught up in a vicious, bloody series of events.
- I was quite dubious going into this film having decided to watch it entirely on a whim. Imdb claims this as the 'First ever Israel horror feature.’ and I have to say it is a success.
- The description of this film isn’t incorrect but perhaps slightly misleading. The focus on the serial killer character is quite a generalisation when he doesn’t have much of an effect on the events of the film individually but only as the catalyst that causes all these characters to wind up intertwined.
- Unlike many slasher films, Rabies succeeded in making me care about the characters I ought to and dislike the ones I shouldn’t. However, suggesting that the film presents the characters as black or white would be an insult. There is an impressive moral complexity to these characters that the majority of the actors managed to expertly convey. The disgust/anger I felt towards Yuval was hard to remember during his last moments on the phone to his father.
- Rabies manages to successfully subvert the conventions of a slasher film to create something original and gripping to experience.
- The only complaints I have would maybe be about the confused-feeling pacing as the tension waxes and wanes slightly too haphazardly and the film does unfortunately abide by the ‘bury your gays’ trope. Although, it’s hard to complain about someone dying in a horror film so...
- I would absolutely recommend Rabies to anyone looking for a unusual and imaginative horror film.

This is another recent first time watch. Seeing the title, I thought this would be a different type of movie, but I'm glad I didn't look into it first. It is another brutal movie. It has a story though that made me think and an interesting way to present a story like this. What are you thoughts on this movie?

ABCs of Death 2 (2014)
In today's review, I take a masterclass in horror as I attempt a #positive review of the 2014 guide ABCs of Death 2 #JimHosking#LancelotOduwaImasuen #JulianBarrett #RodneyAscher #KristinaBuožytė #LarryFessenden #AharonKeshales #BillPlympton #VincenzoNatali
Anthologies live and die by their stories. Some are so creative that they enter the everyday lexicon. When you have such an interesting idea like 26 dark tales for 26 letters of the alphabet, it certainly bears repeating. In 2014, following up from the success of the previous anthology, The ABCs of Death got an expansion with The ABCs of Death 2.
Dark tales like living on a tropical island…
