I’ve been taking Hawaiian lessons for a bit less than a year, so most of what I know how to say is probably humorously formal.
A hui hou kakou, malama pono= until we meet again, take good care.
Alola (Aloha) Tita, Tapu pu= Bye Sister (informal), Tapu be with you (taken from the expressions “Ke Akua pu” and “Iesu pu”, “God be with you” and “Jesus be with you” respectively)

KE AUPUNI UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 2023
Tumblr media
Let’s not forget Kapu Aloha If there is any time for Kapu Aloha, this is it. The fires that ravaged Lāhainā a month ago has brought out the best in us — many acts of kōkua, mālama and aloha kekahi i kekahi — as well as some unfortunate venting. The world is watching us like never before. How we behave now, in this time of crisis, is going to speak volumes on whether the world’s sympathy and outpouring of concern for the people of Hawaiʻi is warranted. We just celebrated the 185th birthday of our Queen Liliʻuokalani. If there was anyone who would have been justified to lash out in anger, vengeance and bitterness against those who deposed her, stole her kingdom and subjugated her people, it was her. But she maintained her composure anchored in her faith in Ke Akua Mana Loa and Kapu Aloha. And just a few years ago, we witnessed and participated in one of the greatest outpouring of Kapu Aloha — Kū Kiaʻi Mauna. It was a situation that could have easily turned ugly, but because of the steadfast guidance of our Kūpuna who spoke, sang, chanted, prayed and counseled our people to embrace and trust in Kapu Aloha, Kū Kiaʻi Mauna became a modern-day example that Kapu Aloha works amazingly. Let us not forget these lessons and the many more in our history and allow it to guide and inspire us in the challenging times ahead. One of the insidious legacies of colonialism is the tendency to think like an American — in legal terms, laws, rights, contracts — rather than in human terms of caring, respect, aloha.  The American way is adversarial, trying to defeat your opponent rather than working things out through friendship and good will. About a year ago, I was having a conversation with the Ambassador from Kiribati (our nearest neighbor to the West). He said “I don’t use the term, ‘win-win’. Instead, I use the term, ‘happy-happy’.” This means relationships should not be based on winning over or defeating someone, it should be to make both parties happy. Hence, ‘happy, happy.’ This is quite profound! This is the Pacific way. This is what we have lost because we have been trained to think in terms of adversarial positions, where you battle things out, rather than of friendly positions, where you work things out. The whole idea of hoʻoponopono is that you work things out, you make things right (pono) between the two of you. You’re ‘happy-happy,’ both sides happy with the result. The American colonial system is based on winning and losing, buying and selling, owning and owing, using and being used. People’s lives only matter when it serves the American system. Why not, instead of adversarial, adopting a system based on kindness and respect and helping one another? This is the way we should behave as Hawaiians, as People of the Pacific and as Human Beings. In our efforts to restore our beloved Lāhainā as well as our beloved nation, we should not do so at the expense of our honor and our aloha.
“Love of country is deep-seated in the breast of every Hawaiian, whatever his station.” — Queen Liliʻuokalani ---------- Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono. The sovereignty of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.

Program: Aloha Ke Akua, Creations Daughter
This is definitely one of the stronger skates they’ve had in recent years, however their low base Skating Skills are very evident in many parts of this program since there is no theme/camp/energy to hide or distract. Their performance value was very sweet and enjoyable, just as their normal vibe usually will produce, however I am frustrated by how middling they seem to be doomed to as the 4th or even 5th best Canadian team…
I don’t really understand this program… and I don’t think the composition, and especially not the mixing, is all that great — whether there is an actual theme behind this program or it’s just a mashup of two unrelated songs cuz they vaguely sound good together. I do think Carolane looks gorgeous in this pink, but I’m definitely not sold on the program.
Score: 103.25, total 175.63 into 1st

“Fire Dragon” - Sage Uʻilani Takehiro
for Linus Chao
Lao Ye sits at the edge of hala trees where rolls of brown and yellow seas eat thorns of dried lauhala. He seeks Tai Nainai, finds a fishing canoe instead.
Ma ke kai pōlena o Waimanu aia ka manu kiko ʻeleʻele e lele aʻe i ka lewa nuʻu e lele ana i Kapō‘ula Aloha aku, aloha mai ē
There are the kiʻi, ready and wet from the Qi of a horsehair brush.
Kū ka pae uli huli aku nei kū ka pali uli huʻi ka makani aniani ka lehua onaona kū ka ʻōhiʻa a e ola ka honua Aloha aku, aloha mai ē
Nā ‘aumakua steer him into the breeze that curls through spines of bamboo trees.
‘O ke ao kea lohe iā ‘oe hoʻolono kou nānea i ka wao akua Hao mai ka ua ‘Awa o nā kama ē Ua lele ‘oe i Kapō‘ula a ua noa, a ua noa ē.
Lao Ye sits on the back of the fire dragon, smokes incense from Shandong to Hawaiʻi. He stretches from cloud to ka nahele, paints around the white of sky, with blue, purple, and red.
Aloha aku, aloha mai ē Aloha aku, aloha mai ē No nā kupuna, he inoa.

KE AUPUNI UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 2022
Tumblr media
Little White Lies I’ve mentioned before, this famous quote of South African anti-apartheid activist, Stephen Biko: “The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.” If the oppressor can get those they are oppressing to believe certain lies, then the oppressor secures his control. And it’s not only big lies like “Hawaii was annexed” or “Hawaii is the 50th state of the U.S.” or Hawaiians are Americans”, but a lot of little “white lies” that constitute death by a thousand daily cuts. Every day, I still hear the automatic, knee-jerk use of the word, “mainland” when referring to the United States. This is one of the most insidious examples of group-conditioning. But there are many more, “colonial” white lies embedded in our sub-conscious intended to erase and replace our true identity with a foreign one. We may say “We are not American!” and not realize our minds are still caught in the lie of the American dream (or nightmare rat-race) where the prime objective in life is to accumulate a lot of money and power. We know the drill: we can be happy if we get jobs so we can earn money so we can get a place for our family, and buy food imported from “the mainland”, and smile at the tourists, because their money provides the money for our jobs, so we can get a place... A couple weeks ago, there was a news article about a “shocking” decline in enrollment of Hawaiian students at the University of Hawaii. While I believe higher education is a good thing and Hawaiians have made huge strides because of it, the knee-jerk reaction was to imply the decline of Hawaiian student enrollment as a an alarming and tragic trend. But did anyone stop to think that maybe some of our young Hawaiians don’t see the track of Western higher education for economic success in the colonizers world as something they should blindly pursue? Especially since believing the “white lies” over and over have led to more disenfranchisement, more poverty, more houselessness, more frustration and despair for Hawaiians… The hundred thirty year long and painful journey from the “overthrow”, to ”annexation”, to “statehood”, to the Koko Head evictions, to the protests at Kalama Valley, Kaho’olawe, Waiahole-Waikane, Hilo Airport, etc., etc. to OHA, to UH Hawaiian Studies, to the “sovereignty movement”, to the “independence movement”, to more aloha ʻāina cofrontations, more evictions, more arrests and incarcerations… culminating in Kū Kiaʻi Mauna and the rise of the Lāhui... has been a journey of separating the lies from the truth. Yes, there are many benefits from the Western ways we can use, but to really free our nation, we have to free ourselves of the oppressor’s mindset, we have to think clearly for ourselves and apply our ways to how we want to live. We must be guided by the ways and core values of our kūpuna... aloha ke Akua, aloha ʻāina, mālama pono, kōkua, lōkahi, and so forth. a mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono. The sovereignty of the land is perpetuated in righteousness. ------ For the latest news and developments about our progress at the United Nations in both New York and Geneva, tune in to Free Hawaii News at
