. I have several outlets to balance my heart and my mind. Gawking at boobs is one, playing with sharp objects, writing, drawing, and my second favorite outlet - cooking. (Curvy chicks is my first) . Life has weighed heavily on me lately - as it should. It’s a way of saying, “Grow stronger”, and as many of us know, it’s not that easy. . I’ve grown to view our lives as these beautiful containers filled with time and energy. We each determined where we allocate our time and energy. Eventually, we learn that they are not boundless. There are limitations. . We choose who and what we share our time and energy with. We may eventually run out of them, if we choose wrong, but if we choose wisely - it replenishes it’s energy, and grants us a little more time. . It’s a difficult lesson to choose who or what we dedicate our time and energy to. Do we dedicate a percentage to hating someone, a percentage to focusing on a new job, a percentage on kids, on friends, a failing relationship, new clothes, a girl or guy, school - and what happens when we run out? . And that is what I believe a major part of life is about - to figure out the next step and how to take it long after all resources have dried up. . When the heart, soul and mind are in pieces - faith is all that remains...and boobs. There will always be boobs and yoga pants. . In celebration of faith and boobs, I made some shoyu ahi poke; threw in some edamame, seaweed, furakake, cucumbers, chili peppers, sweet onions, #alohashoyu, sea salt, cracked pepper, and dark sesame oil. . I enjoyed my bowl of poke, an ice cold #konabigwave and a picture of some random chick in yoga pants, which didn’t smell as fishy as I thought - the ahi. You know it’s cold when white people aren’t walking. I haven’t seen a haole walk by or jog ALL DAY. The only other time I notice white people don’t walk is when black people take walks 😜 (I jokes, I jokes...) . Anyway, here I am; still sicker than a coed drunk af on tequila... her first time away from home... during days 1 - 3 of her period.🤢 . I started boiling water for no frickin’ reason. I dunno. Sometimes, I’ll put stuff on my stovetop and stand there. I’ll stand and stare at pots, hoping it magically turns into a cooked meal. . Anyway, the weather clowns predicted 5 - 8 inches of snow. Its been a while since I’ve seen 8in of whiteness. I see 8in of brown & black all the time...in my yard, while gardening. So, I peeked out my front door, and I practically gagged at the eight inches of whiteness; It was definitely hard to swallow. It was a lot, and I couldn’t take it. Its too hard to deal with. It was such an eyeful. Okay, okay...😈 #ihatesnow . My brain went from 8in of snow - to thoughts of putting meat in my mouth. So, I thought, #Gyudon! . What’s easier than gyudon ? I made rice, parboiled an egg, steamed some veggies, slapped a quick marinade (#alohashoyu, ginger, mirin, rice vinegar, honey, chili pepper, sesame oil, green onions, sweet onions, salt, pepper) waited 30 min and cooked it all up. Yum! 😋 . Now, after warming up with meat in my mouth, a cozy fireplace, and a ton of Vick’s - 8in was much more manageable...to see. 🤒 . Oh, and all you guys posting pics from home being all like; “Oh, da weather so nice!!!”, or, “Oh, warm yeah, da sunshine?”, and, “Eh, like go beach, cuz?”...I do stinkeye on you, and hope you get dakine burnt malasadas; your eggs on yo’ next locomoco ova cooked. I hope stay traffic on ALL da H’s on your day off, da rice in your next Musubi stay dry, and the guy in front of you gets the last scoop of Kimchi mussels and California Ahi. Mo’ worse, I hope your last can of SPAM - - - spoils. Visiting #leidhawaiianpoke for the first time. Of course, I’m used to asking for “Ahi” - “#AhiShoyu -please.” . “Whuh?” . “Ahi Shoyu, please.” . “Whuh?” . “Ahi Shoyu, please?” . “We don’t have that.” . 😳 . I wanted to say something #antihipster, but it not his fault. Whoever trained the poor kid should know better. I asked, “What kind is that? - and pointed at the tuna. . With an eye-roll, “It just tuna and soy sauce.” . “I’ll take a scoop of Tuna and SOOOY SAUCE, limu, and Salmon.” . The size of the cubed fish chunks is nice, and it’s chilled so you can’t tell it’s not fresh. The rice is flavored well and they don’t skimp on toppings. . It doesn’t hold a candle to #foodlandpoke that’s 3/4 the cost. The truth is - none of these mainland hipster poke places do, and they’re so overpriced. . Wanna know what the best poke is and where to get it - Drift off da a’ina, reel in da ahi, you can do it yourself, or ask uncle to slice and cube ‘em. Throw in some #alohashoyu, den small kine sesame oil, sea salt, limu, maybe some onions - pau. Poke. . Poke bowl spots are popping up all over the place. Its obviously a trend. Personally, unless poke has been, becomes, and remains a part of the lifestyle and culture of the area you’re in, I don’t think the trend is sustainable for longer than 2-3 years. . In Hawaii, poke is part of the lifestyle; Its like slippers, tank tops, and board shorts. It’s influences come from its mixed cultural history of farming, fishing, and Asia. Poke on the islands is as deeply embedded into its food culture as #SPAM. At this rate, for Poke Bowls to sustain itself - they’d have to make themselves as relevant as your local #Starbucks. . As for being called “Poke”, Lei’d’s version tastes nothin like poke. It’s dressed up sashimi. So, if you want a large bowl of excellent sushi rice, topped with nicely cubed chunks of decent sashimi grade ahi and salmon, dressed in above average sauces - this place is a’ight. No Hana Hou from me, though. Too many pretentious and angry stares from hipsters looking for a seat, as one of their own placed a bag and jacket in empty seats to prevent people from sitting next to her.
