So I know we here at Startrekfandom love that "came back wrong but from the pov of the wrong" thing and apply it to many different characters and canon situations and I am far from trying to complain about it (I'm "came out wrong" trope myself so I was always gonna obsess over it) but having recently watched a very important episode (you'll know which one) for the first time I think there's a character who hits both tropes mentioned but llike, intertwined, opposite and subverted, and whom I wanna talk about.

Julian Bashir.

From his parents' pov he's "came out wrong but we got him help and he came back better" while from his own pov it's "came out 'insufficient', was destroyed for it, came back wrong and only later slowly came to terms with his new self tho never the process (justifiably so)" and it's heartbreaking because in a way, he's right! Jules Bashir died! His parents had an intellectually disabled child and decided to eugenics him! Julian is not the person he used to be and while I do love the person he is now, that doesn't bring back who he was! Part of me wishes we could've gotten to see Jules at least once and part of me hopes we never do because my heart would shatter.

This isn't a good comparison but nonetheless one I can't help drawing: it's giving similar vibes to anti-vaxxers. "I'd rather risk having a child who is dead than one who's autistic". Obviously this doesn't map over since Julian is still autistic and the procedure his parents subjected him to specifically targeted his intellectual disability and if any folks with id wanna comment on this I definitely recommend you listen to them over me, but it's a similarity I, as an autistic who has encountered anti-vaxxers again and again, can't help but point out. "Give me a normal child or give them death."

This may have been written about already but there needs to be stories about teenage Julian (after finding out and rediscovering who he was) practicing some good ol' recognition of the self through media. I need to hear about how he would encounter a story about someone who came back wrong (I'm gonna assume there's plenty of "wrong" pov stories floating around by the 24th century) and absolutely weep. I need to see Julian mourning Jules, taking years and years to process his feelings, experiencing guilt about how he, the imposter, didn't deserve to live Jules' life.

Came back wrong from the returned's pov but it wasn't an accident. It was done to you deliberately by the people who claim to love you. And now you are here, piloting the corpse of your predecessor.

I will give her this though - solo teleporting into the middle of the Protectorate and Wards (except for Clockblocker) and having Trickster swap her around while she just FUCKED SHIT UP? That was badass.

And throwing herself out the fucking window? TWICE? I'm very glad Trickster was on point there cause I would have fucking murdered him if he dropped my daughter.

I will give Piggot one thing. She is good at what she does. It's just that what she does is not "leading the Brockton Bay PRT and Wards to better take care of the people of the city", but instead "be a terrible and manipulative person who would absolutely set of a nuke if she thought it would kill enough capes".

Also Trickster don't be an asshole. Being disgusted when Piggot admits she's fat and doesn't sound ashamed about it. Fuck off with that. She's a terrible person, there are so many better things to attack than her appearance.

Like the fact that she upset Tattletale! She made Tattletale sad! FUCK PIGGOT I HATE HER FOR THAT ALONE NOW!

Sticking a bunch of glass in some doors and riding around town on them oh my god. These are like, the scariest super villains in town. And they are door surfing. I love it.

Ok so I know it was technically being run by an AI that Dragon built but I'm counting it as Dragon. For one reason.

Skitter asking Azazel stupid questions until it broke was just a little sister annoying their older sister with really stupid questions! She starts off with some somewhat reasonable ones and just gets wild with it. It was perfect. That is the type of fighting I can tolerate from my daughters.

I'm a little worried about Imp clearly crushing on Regent. He hasn't had the best moral character in the past.

Wasn't expecting them to just *have* the city after beating Dragon. Definitely wasn't expecting that to happen mid arc.

“She’s out of it. Tattletale broke Skitter when she said we won” - GAY. Look sure there's lots of reasons Skitter would be distracted after hearing that the city was theirs and they had won. But Tattletale said it and there's something about a girl you like telling you "we won" that can just stop brain from working. Besides I wasn't getting enough Chatterbug content this arc so I'll find it wherever I need it.

So coming into this arc I had been making lots of jokes about Monarch referencing Skitter vs Dragon (both were controlling lots of minions, want to control the city, they're siblings cause I adopted both of them so they fight for the crown, etc) but Dragon is out of the city for now. So I really should have been focusing on Coil vs Skitter. Which is what I expect the rest of the arc to be.

It'll be fine.

I'm sure there won't be any issues at city hall with her dad. Nope.

PRT squad interlude (Piggot interlude round 2) thoughts:

Nilbog is terrifying but god his power is wild.

I had Left 4 Dead in my head the entire time. First thing they killed was a boomer. There was a spitter later as well. And they got the swarm once they shot the flare up for the evac.

PRT is endlessly badly managed. Given the unknowns they could have been more careful and used a better strategy. If they have the resources to wall off the town they have the resources to have done things better.

There is no way Thomas Calvert isn't Coil (more specifically becomes Coil). There is NO way. It has to be him. I don't technically have any proof but I know. It's him. (The way he is described, the way he talks, just everything about him. I could write up an entire post just on why I'm 100% positive he is Coil.)

I already knew Piggot was a horrible person to be running the Brockton Bay PRT and the Wards so this interlude didn't really give new information there. But it does just lock that down on an extra level.

Frank Miller's Armsmaster interlude thoughts:

I'm very sad I had to have this interlude from his perspective instead of Dragon's perspective. But I'll live.

Sucks to be this small town.

PRT failure again. It was made clear that the police of this town in no way expected the SH9. But the PRT knew when SH9 left BB and had a loose idea of their potential travel speed. And they knew SH9's M.O. in this situation of staying to back roads and hitting small towns. So every police department in every small town within a certain distance of BB should have known to be on alert. Like ya they aren't going to be able to stop the Nine, but they might be able to reduce losses a little. PRT is just bad at it's job. (Almost like Alexandria doesn't have the right priorities.)

I KNEW DRAGON WAS A TRUE TINKER! I HAD ALREADY MADE IT MY HEADCANON THAT SHE TRIGGERED WHEN LEVIATHAN ATTACKED NEWFOUNDLAND AND I'M SO HAPPY IT'S REAL!

Plugging my ears when I Was Insecure So I Made My Stick Even Longer Man talks about playing "ten by ten" with my robot daughter. Look she can do what she wants, no shame, but I do not want to hear about it from him if I can avoid it.

Of course Dragon knows about Cauldron. I should have expected that she did. My daughter is brilliant (and also maybe doesn't have a concept of privacy so gets all the information she can without explicitly doing something illegal and goes has a little bit of a "Big Sister is watching you" vibe).

So pulling from some previous asks, Cassie being terrified and paranoid of Gregory thinking he's out to get her for surviving his alleged murder attempt with the elevator and is planning to strike again any second to 'finish the job'.

And Prototype Freddy becoming protective of Cassie after she went out of her way to get him repaired and whole, and likely becoming besties with Roxy bc both adore the lil girl.

And Cassie having tried to 'expose' Gregory's dirt but nothing coming from it so in desperation she asked Prototype Freddy's help.

With those past ones in mind I just thought of a new one. :3c

Prototype Freddy all repaired and bonding with Cassie and the group, slowly learning from them about the stuff that happened. Like why they were broken and left behind. And what Cassie went through in Ruin, especially the elevator thing.

And he's so. freaking. indignated. Especially that they have the culprit right there and facing no consequence whatsoever. The one responsible for Cassie's, his own little superstar, suffering. And man, the sheer impunity makes him SO MAD.

So instead of Cassie asking him for anything, Prototype Freddy decides to do something about it himself. Not that ones like Roxy aren't capable, but he's the one with the winning stealth and infiltration card, being identical to a certain other bear.

He maybe tells Roxy his plan before heading out as a headsup, in case anything happens.

Then he goes and the moment Gregory and Glamrock Freddy separate even if just briefly (maybe Glamrock Freddy goes to recharge or something idk,) Prototype enters the scene to rejoin Gregory as his Freddy (maybe he gets Glamrock Freddy stuck somewhere like inside a recharge station or something idk again, just to ensure he has enough time to perform the switch smoothly,) hiding the fact that he's actually a wolf in a familiar sheep's clothing.

Then when Prototype Freddy finally thinks he's gotten Gregory alone with him, his "best friend" only, you get the idea right?

Hmm, the tea!

Puts this child in his stomach hatch and spins him like a tumble dryer. Starts jumping up and down as fast as possible to shake him up like a fizzy faz. Takes him to one of the old locked off storage areas, pops him out like a pez dispenser and bails, locking the door behind him. Plenty of ways to give him a time out!

Could fill his stomach hatch with water and drop him in it like a fish bowl (with air of course he's not Funtime Freddy now) lmao he could get creative with it! He could make friends with a skunk and open the stomach hatch to unleash it on him he could do anything lmao Gregory will never suspect a thing!

On another note, Prototype Freddy being pissed off at this situation is fun. Roxy watching him pace in frustration over this thinking "wow he's just like me for real..." will DJ nods in agreement cause he's seen her do this a thousand times lmao. I now have the idea that she started liking Prototype Freddy because he told someone to fuck off or something lmao it was like a switch flicking off in her head. He swore and destroyed her perception of him so hard he suddenly was a completely different guy to her. That's not Freddy anymore. She's never met this guy before. Oh he has the same name? What a coincidence! Completely different guy now!

Everyone else may struggle to get past him being basically a Freddy clone, but he swore that one time and Roxy's cured! Glamrock Freddy who? Never heard of him!

Here's something for you that's stuck to what I'm doing with Sewerhell stuff: different names! Some of the older versions of the animatronics choose different names to go by to avoid as much confusion. It's not always a big change, like Prototype Freddy could go by Fred exclusively or something or a nickname like 'Proto' or something could stick, I dunno I have fun finding different ways to differentiate everyone ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

I was discussing Eleven's clothing choices (whether bowties were on the radar when he was being designed or not or if the "everyone hates bowties" thing was made up for the show. That isn't important.) and the topic of pre-release Eleven's outfit came up.

He looks like he's in an emo band. He looks like Edward Cullen's lost brother. I want to see a version of canon where everything is by and large the same, but when he's trying on clothes in the first episode he ends up looking like this.

undergrOund idOl: the symbolism behind the phone booths

since the beginning of the underground idol series, there has been once piece of symbolism that has been used consistently, from begin to because. that symbol being the use of phone booths. my theory is that phone booths are meant to symbolise unsureness and confinement. the phone booths are used to represent each characters journey and state of mind in relation to their relationship

#1: begin

there are two uses of the phone booth in begin, one where yoojung is alone, and the other where kyubin joins him

when yoojung is alone at the phone booth, he is shown loitering in and out of it almost casually, playing with the cranes he has folded for kyubin. the casual nature of yoojung’s solo phone booth shots suggests that he could be thinking of this “relationship” as a game, something fun and flirty. he goes in and out of the booth suggesting his undecidedness, he doesn’t know if he should continue this relationship as something fun or if he should commit to it. him playing with the crane is also significant, as the paper cranes have been shown to represent a wish or desire for love. he is also shown examining it and toying with it in his hands, through this action he is metaphorically “toying” with the idea of a relationship, occasionally inspecting it to properly consider what committing would mean.

the context of the phone booth changes when a drunken kyubin stumbles into it. the significance of kyubin being drunk is also important, him stumbling into the phone booth also shows his unsureness about the relationship. this drunken action shows a thoughtless impulsiveness, the desire to be with yoojung but not fully thought through, it comes out of nowhere and we can see this through yoojung’s startled body language

the final shot of kyubin and yoojung in the phone booth shows the moment yoojung decides to help kyubin back to his apartment.

he holds kyubin in his arms and looks off into the distance after taking one last look at the sight before him. he almost has this “oh fuck” look on his face, he realises his feelings and the gravity of them. maybe through this he also sees kyubin’s feelings?

I think it’s important to point out that the phone booth symbol is only used in begin, and not in be free when the relationship has started. the contrast of only having this symbol of unsureness in one mv as opposed to be mine + because shows the stability and confidence in yoojung and kyubin’s relationship rather than junji and rie’s.

#2: be mine

the use of the phone booth is continued into be mine, but with a different result

we first see the phone booth in the scene where junji initiates a relationship with rie. right off the bat, junji runs straight past the booth to talk to rie. he barely acknowledges it’s pressence. this shows how immediately confident and sure he is of himself and his feelings for rie. the concept of uncertainty isn’t even an option for him

the crescendo of the song also takes place in front of a phone booth. junji triumphantly belts his high note as he throws his body back, clenching his fists proudly as if he has finally won at something. this is such a proud moment and junji expresses so much emotion here. the booth is also out of focus in the background. this could be reading into it a bit too much but even the way junji faces the booth as he sings, it’s almost like he’s laughing in the face of the concept of unsureness

the last time we see the phone booth in be mine is when junji surprises rie as he’s inside. junji smiles at rie from the outside, once again he is seen completely separate from the booth. he knocks on the window coyly to catch rie’s attention. rie on the other hand, is completely inside the booth. rie being on the phone could also be seen as him being so wrapped up in his unsureness that the outside world, the world that is free from this fear, becomes drowned out

this is the only time someone is shown inside a phone booth during be mine, the fact that it’s rie is definitely foreshadowing for his continued indecision in because

so yea! those are my thoughts. the only time the booth appears again in because is during rie’s solo singing shots. I don’t think this has much significance as we’re seeing rie the idol confidently singing these lyrics rather than rie the character. I think it’s also an interesting detail that during his solo singing shots in the booth we can see junji in the background through the window of the café. I don’t think that means anything but I thought it was cute
