2020.12.16 The World You Live In at Zepp Nagoya, 2nd event report

For this one I was sitting in the last row on the 2nd floor😂 but the view was good, especially when watching the live footage.

This time Takabayashi also joined, he sat on the left, and we again got Die and Toshiya, with Fujieda on the right who again acted as the MC.

F again started the talk with the topic of the show without audience and Ochita. He asked band members about the flow of working on the songs, which to choose, how they decided to go with a song like that for a single. D replied that they make many songs for albums, when they work on the singles they want them to connect somehow, and he thinks they were able to do that.

T: what he said.

Then D talked about some gel type bath Kaoru recommended him, at Fukuoka during the tour in the past (?)

Ta commented that when hot the water in Tokyo smells. Water in the countryside like Nagano is better quality.

F: 'what song did you listen to the most during pandemic? It can be an artist.'

D: Kimetsu one?

F: 'Kousui' is also played everywhere.

D: I remember we had some event at a department store in Nagoya.

F: but I love oyaki (it's famous in Nagano stuffed dumpling, grilled).

T: I saw a cockroach for the first time only when I went to Tokyo and then Kyoto. Nagano is too cold for them.

F: Hakkaido too.

(Toshiya, I really feel ya, I've only encountered roaches after I came to Japan💀)

they talked about fighting with them, D used something to immobilize them (???)

T: they are so big. When we filmed Clever Sleazoid video I just stepped on one.

F (laughing): went 'kyaaaa' and stepped on it!

T also talked about the old story when they just started a band and they came to Nagano to meet T, there was a lot of snow then and all band members got super excited because of it, starting to play in snow. T's mother took a photo of them, that photo is still at T's home at Nagano.

F: who was driving then?

T: Aki-san, from the previous company.

D: I didn't know it gets all snowy like that.

Then they talked about old simple phones without cameras and cameras they used, heavy bricks.

T: sorry, generation gap again.

F: what happened to the 'cold' topic? Why roaches???

Ta: we can do 2 more questions.

T: F, why did you ???

F told us a story about almost being in a traffic accident on a highway driving from Nagoya when suddenly their tyre got a hole, but thanks to his super special technique he could stop the car.

I don’t recommend uploading your gifs with Text because:

it affects the quality (bad)

it affects the gutters (ty abbie) like the gap between the gifs are bigger so they look separated

it wont look nice in most themes (ty v) because they get treated as a text post and not a photoset

also: if u upload gifs via mobile they’ll be uploaded as a text post and not photoset so it’s best to do it on desktop!! ty for coming to my ted talk

do you have any tips for making high quality gifs? the ones you make always look soooo smooth.

this is very long i’m sorry i ramble, buts its all the things i could think of that could be helpful!! i’m always experimenting with new methods to gif, and these are my tips!!!

Find the most HQ videos possible if not try just try your best. Lately i’ve been fixated on turning 480p videos into 1080p it’s frustrating 0_o

Avisynth/vapoursynth! It resizes and does topaz’s work without killing my computer. Everyone has their own settings for KNLM and finesharp so play around with them. I rec adjusting the settings for the type of video you’re doing bcuz one setting does not fit all (performances, vlogs, magazine shoots are all different in my opinion). I will still use topaz sometimes afterwards if I want to finetune something for detail.

Always check your gif on mobile before posting! It may look good in ps/desktop but tumblr processes things very differently so learn to work around it. Check for graininess (I absolutely hate the patchy squares and it just means that over time when tumblr updates, your gif quality will degrade even faster, I want my gifs to still look good after 4 years!). In addition, almost everyone’s on mobile nowadays, making gifs extra big will make ppl stop and notice your gifs and interact. But that means they’ll also notice your gif quality up close and personal on their hd phone screens and ignore it if it’s laggy or patchy.

For layers, 7 or 8 layers are the same as 20 or 30 layers in the end. Having more layers just makes gifs bigger and harder to process and tumblr eats the quality of bigger gifs (especially over time). I’d also rec keeping layers minimal (no more than 15 or so). Giffing with minimal layers takes practice and knowing your routine (start out with as many to practice as you want, cut down as you go.)

Make blacks blacker and whites whiter (creates good contrast and graininess is less likely to show). Intensify and enhance colors by adding colors in their range (i.e. enhance purples by turning up reds or blues). Play w selective color and hue/saturation.

Tone down or completely eliminate any colors that could directly oppose the dominant colors of your gif (i.e. eliminate any greens in yellow/orange dominant gifs). I also rec avoiding coloring gifs super bright (the neon rainbow trend of 2015 gifs) if it’s not already their natural color from the original source (over time the coloring degrades very very quickly).

Eliminate blues if you can (especially in the background, just turn it to black or white). It’s an absolutely terrible color to make high quality without graininess (next to red) and it’s quality always degrades faster too. In addition, degray gifs bcuz gray gifs have bad quality and patchy squares always show.

After vapoursynth, experiment with sharpening and then adding a layer of gaussian blur or grain (or a mix of both). I don’t prefer a lot of blur bcuz it also succumbs to graininess but it’s good for softening and dithering (I like to use this on vlog type videos or interviews). I also add grain like some film gifmakers and I find that it distributes and dithers color much more nicely and it enhances quality on mobile by 10000%. If you’ve noticed, film gifsets on mobile are super crisp HQ (mostly from 4k dvd rips they’re the cream of the crop) but also bcuz of adding grain to redistribute color. It ensures that their gifs can still be reblogged years after they’re published (I’ve personally noticed that film gifs always outlast every other fandom’s gifs in terms of longevity and quality from experience). Adding grain has the natural detailed quality I like and it helps eliminate the need for tons of layers. It makes 5 or 6 layers possible and my gifs smaller to upload.

In addition, decide if you like the completely smooth, muted look. Lately it’s been rly popular among kpop editors and it’s becoming the standard trend in kpop. I like how it makes things really HQ w/out graininess but I also dislike how it mutes colors with the added layers of selective color and exposure (it’s the gray white cast you see on most HQ kpop gifs now). I think some features and colors lose detail and their overall natural quality from the video. I’ve been experimenting w a style that combines both grain/blur and selective color techniques to make gifs rly HQ but I’m not sure I actually like it yet. I want the original colors to be enhanced w/out losing all the detail.

Finally, in relation to coloring and skintone (because it’s a big part of HQ gifs i believe). I’ve noticed over the past few years some editors solution to unwhitewashing is making idols overwhelmingly yellow or even orange and I dislike it very much. It’s reminiscent of the awful yellow gifs of 2012 tumblr that resulted from the overuse of topaz + it’s kind of racist in the assumption that all asians are yellow (an absolutely wonderful novelty of western colonization and imperialism). Learn to color based on the idol’s actual skin tone and I recommend trying to match actual skintone from unedited fansite photos or my preference is airport videos. Fan photos (not from fansites) are another good place and if you’ve seen them live in person, even better! Unwhitewash and enhance skintone based on this, and also learn the idol’s undertones to help you color. Undertones can be determined based on hair colors they’ve had or drastically avoid all the time (did blonde, blue or green hair make them look gray and drained? it’s probably bcuz they have mostly warm undertones; some idols have a good mix of both so they’ll look good in any hair color). If you noticed on my most recent yukhei gifset, I follow this technique to unwhitewash him in the the original video (which was very gray and whitewashed) . He looks darker, but not overwhelming brown or yellow yellow, and also his warm undertones are emphasized.

Touken Ranbu 2.5D Cafe

Last winter I went to Japan and visited the TKRB 2.5D cafe in Osaka! This is a rly overdue report but I decided that it was better late than never LOL. Sry for the bad pic quality >< These were taken via mobile phone so they’re not the best...

Pictures and report under the read more. Warning, this is super long!!

Entrance to the cafe. Through the window you can see the photo booth machines :3c I got 2 sets of photos (myu 1 and 3, sorry myu 2!!) Each set cost ¥1,000 and you get 1 physical printed photo and 2 codes for high quality mobile background versions ^^ It was really cool because we could choose to take a pic with all the cast members or multiple shots with the SAME cast member LOL. If anyone is interested I could upload the pictures I got.

After taking our shoes off at the entrance, there was a walkway that led up to our tables. At the end, there was a giant wall with the actor’s signatures.

To either sides of the dining area they had these set up to view and take pictures. One side had Mikazuki and Kogitsunemaru’s Itsukushima Jinja live outfits. The other side had Kashuu’s solo performance outfit and props. The program book has cast member signatures.

With a purchase of a ticket we got 1 meal set and a complimentary drink. Each extra drink cost about ¥700 (I don’t remember the exact price...) Also we got a coaster with every drink... which is why I have a lot of drink pictures LOL, my friend and I were rushing to try and get more drinks for coasters aksdfjhkapff.

Aaand that’s it! After I finished eating we went to the public area. This was on the other side of the dining area and they sold snacks as well as official myu/stage merchandise. I do not really remember what snacks were available but I think it was takoyaki and shaved ice... I was too full to try any of them but I just remember them smelling good. In the merch area they sold literally everything LOL. Bromides, program books, pen lights, tote bags, and even toothbrushes??! You name it, they had it! I ended up buying a ton of bromides and a door curtain of Kogitsunemaru. In addition, there was also a VR area where you could watch the VR performances (the same stuff that is on PSVR). And finally... the real money grabber for me was the gacha machines alskdjfkalpff >< They had several button gacha machines of every play and my friend and I got our wallets sucked dry from them LOL. I can post pictures of what I grabbed on a separate post if anyone is interested.

P.S. I know that afterwards (from when I went) they also added a UFO machine with merch from the 3rd stage.

How are you gifs always so nice?? Can you show me how you make them?

I recommend this tutorial from the amazing people at @itsphotoshop for how to make gifs. I use the import video method because I have the large majority of shows I gif already chopped up into scene blocks. For that I use QuickTime or Avidemux. I like Avidemux better now than I used to, and especially if I’m watching the episode and clipping at the same time, which is what I do with new episodes. QuickTime works better on large files though, like movies.

I don’t think there is anything special that I do, but here are some things to keep in mind to make sure your gifs are high as quality as possible, behind the cut because I ramble.

HD Video - Always use as high quality a video ask you can find, regardless of what gif making method you are using. HD is everything and you’ll lose less quality when you resize and be able to make gifs of any size.

Sharpening - I use a sharpen action, but you can also just convert to a Smart Object and sharpen all frames at once. You have to have the timeline in PS to do this. My settings are 500%, radius 0,3, Remove Gaussian Blur.

Save your gifs with the same settings as this.

Use the right size gif - Tumblr’s dimensions are all fucked since they changed the post width from 500px to 540px. My gif dimensions are as follows: 260 x 150 for sets of 6, 8, 10 or 12, 268 x 268 for those 4 by 4 sets, 540 x 275 for the bigger sets of 4 or more gifs. If you do 3 across, the middle gif has a different dimension (178px wide) than the 2 on the ends (177px wide). I have some sets that are 245 x 175 which are older dimensions I was using for a while, it actually works okay if you sharpen them decently. I have a script for the dashboard that adjusts sizes so it all looks good to me, but not everyone has that. On mobile, hilariously, most gif sets look okay. But in a browser they won’t always. If you use something other than 268px it will scale and look blurry.

Make sure your gifs are all the same size if you put them next to each other. Otherwise it resizes things weird. Don’t put a 268 width gif next to one that’s 250 or it will do bad things and probably look blurry.

Don’t make gifs aren’t bigger than 3MB because they won’t work. I usually aim for 2MB these days, but I go bigger if I have to in order to get the whole scene or whatever in. If you get it right at 2.98+, Tumblr will size them up to 3MB when it’s uploaded, and they won’t work. So you need to be like 2.8MB or lower. When you go to save a gif, at the bottom of the preview screen it shows you how big it will be.

Play your gif in PS or save it to drafts on Tumblr and watch it. I always try to make the looping look smooth if I can. I don’t want big jumps in action or anything to look like it’s stuttering or skipping. If a character moves a lot, make sure that it repeats smoothly and delete frames as needed.

Delete any blurry frames or leading frames. Sometimes when a scene transitions, the first frame will have slightly different coloring than the rest or be darker or brighter. Remove one or two farmes at the start if that’s the case. If a character is moving or transitioning from distance to zoomed in, there can be some blurry frames. If they are at the start or end, remove them so they don’t make the gif look lower quality overall.

In conjunction with the above, pay attention to the timing of your gifs. Chrome and Firefox can make gifs look faster than they actually are. Since the majority of the world uses one of those browsers, I opt for making my gifs a tiny bit slower than their default frame rate so that it looks normal when you’re actually watching them on Tumblr. If the video is 0.04, I set it to 0.06.

Draft your posts. With the speed issues in web browsers, Tumblr’s sizing issues in general, and with the new “nsfw” post bullshit, put your gifs in a post and save it in Drafts. Then go look at it. Watch the looping, look to see if it’s blurry, skips, too fast, etc. Every time I don’t do this or look carefully at my gifs, I post them and notice that something’s messed up.

Castle of Shikigami: An informal rant nobody asked for about my most obscure obsession to date

STOP i spent like 2 days writing this post and im only posting it on tumblr because it’s the one website i’m a member of that can hold the most text. i wanted to infodump somewhere...... read this to learn something i guess (´･ω･`)

Bad voice acting is the Peak of comedy to me, and while I was looking for something to laugh at one day, I found this game called Castle Shikigami 2 for the PS2. The US version of the game's dialogue is rife with machine translated text that makes no sense, and awkward voice acting to boot. They even have voice actors saying the wrong lines, voice actors speaking implied commands, and a few voice lines are left in Japanese. Apparently, Roger Craig Smith (Sonic the Hedgehog's current voice actor) was in this game but I don't think he's even credited?! I think I know which character he voiced but I’m not exactly sure.

The history behind this game’s localization is REALLY weird. Castle of Shikigami/Shikigami no Shiro was originally an arcade bullet hell shoot em up game. The series was created by Alfa System and it was one of Alfa System’s main IPs. There are three main shmup installments and a text adventure game for the PS2, Nanayozuki Gensoukyoku. Nanayozuki was practically fanservice for whatever number of CoS fans there were back then. Each main game in the series was originally an arcade cabinet, but they were all ported to PC and home consoles. In CoS 2′s case, it came out on the PS2, Gamecube, and Dreamcast, but only the PS2 version got localized. The western publisher, XS Games specializes in publishing quality budget titles such as “Bass Pro Shops: The Strike” for the Wii. I theorize they didn’t care too much about the actual content of CoS 2 and were more focused on selling a game quickly for a low price, so they just machine translated it and adjusted a few things. If you’re wondering if Castle of Shikigami 1 was also translated this badly, the answer is No. XS Games instead removed all the dialogue from the western release of CoS 1, and released it with the title “Mobile Light Force 2″.

“Wait, what do you mean ‘Mobile Light Force TWO’ if Castle of Shikigami 1 is the first game in the series?” If you want to know what Mobile Light Force 1 was, it’s GUNBIRD; another shmup game, but by a completely different developer than Castle of Shikigami. I don’t know why they did that. What really kills me though is that both MLF 1 and 2 use the same boxart, which is COMPLETELY unrelated to the actual contents of either game. AFJQHJFOKLJFDS look at this

There’s more hilarity behind Mobile Light Force that isn’t hard to find so you can search that up if you’re interested. But thankfully, Castle of Shikigami 3's Wii edition got more of a proper localization by Aksys Games.

Now I would bluntly say something like “stan castle of shikigami” but:

1. This series’ lore is insanely convoluted. It’s an essential part of this expansive fictional universe referred to as “Mumei Sekaikan” (I don’t know what this translates to in English) where there’s like, 7 different parallel worlds. There’s more obscure ass games and manga that are tied to this universe, and I think there’s even a tabletop RPG made based off it. Have you heard of “Gunparade March”? Most likely you haven’t; it’s an obscure video game made by Alfa System that also got adapted into an anime, and I feel it can be described as Mechas x Persona. One of the characters in CoS 2 is just one of the GPM characters going undercover to find her senpai who traveled to the CoS world. Or something like that. The 7-world universe isn’t explicitly talked about in the game but they make so many references to it without defining anything that it’s like you Must know about it. There is NO documentation in English about the Mumei Sekaikan I could find on the internet, although there is a wiki in Japanese where I got a ton of knowledge from (GOOGLE TRANSLATE IS MY TRUSTED FRIEND) I feel like I might be THE person in the United States who has the most knowledge on the Mumei Sekaikan, and I could go on another tangent talking about what I know so far (and who this one specific dude Shibamura Yuuri is) but I won’t.

2. The writing isn’t excellent and can be pretty Unwoke ™; the first game came out in 2001 and the third game came out in 2005 if that gives you a sense on what era these writers were in. As far as the games dialogue goes, the characters appear kind of flat. CoS 1 and 2 Kotaro (i refuse to use the official “Kohtaro”) is stupid and driven by JUSTICE to a point where it’s annoying. I can’t tell if Hyuga is trying to be a Ladies Man in CoS 2 and 3. Kim, a religious tae kwon do instructor, spends CoS 2 thinking about how he should atone for his sins, then he turns himself into jail at the end. Sayo’s backstory is that she was a shrine maiden raised as a “human weapon” to have no emotions and her only goal in life was to kill god and then die, something like that. However, after CoS 1, she gets a crush on Kotaro because he actually treats her like a human and Of course that’s what you’d expect from the main teen girl and boy in the series. In CoS 3, Sayo's character is mostly played out to be a major tsundere for Kotaro even though surprisingly HIS character in this game changed a ton compared to 1 and 2 (he had to kill an illusion of his older brother, who he learned actually died earlier, and now he has to kill an illusion of his childhood sweetheart... damb that shit sucks :/). He’s still stupid though

There’s a gag in CoS 2 that I can’t clearly remember where it’s like, Niigi makes Sayo and Fumiko, who are both romantically interested in Kotaro, think that he’s only into little girls? Meanwhile, Fumiko’s magic goes wrong and her appearance turns to that of a child though in response she’s like “hee hee maybe Kotaro will like this”. basically more On-Brand early 2000′s anime unwokeness than average. Speaking of Fumiko, she’s a 400+ year old militaristic witch who constantly teases Kotaro (who’s like 16 or 17) and she wants to marry him for his magical potential since he’s like one of the candidates for becoming God??? From the official CoS 3 character descriptions, “Her hobby is to steal the men from other women. Her second hobby is trampling upon people.” She canonically stole her stepmother’s husband from her stepmother (the 3rd boss of CoS 3). I don’t get how that shit would have worked

3. The game itself is HARD af but to be fair I’m a scrub gamer. I can’t get past stage 3 on easy difficulty without continuing. Yes i bought CoS 1 on Steam, Yes it has a port on steam i feel like i should have mentioned this earlier

4. Besides CoS 1 having a port on Steam, CoS 2 and 3 might be hard to obtain legally. The poorly translated CoS 2 was apparently super cheap back then, but since it’s an old game, its value might’ve increased. When I tried looking up prices for English CoS 3, all the listings were like at least $40 and being broke I wouldn’t want to spend more than $29 for a Wii game in 2019... honestly I just emulated CoS 2. shout out to PCSX2

Last month I was desperate, bored enough, and deep enough in the Shikigami rabbit hole that I tried to find the manga based off of it online. The CoS manga only tells the events of the first two games so I still don’t really get anything about CoS 3, like who Mihee, Batu, and Emilio are supposed to be. However, the plot events also differ. For example, Roger Sasuke exists as a character in CoS 3 but in the manga he literally Dies. There’s 11 total volumes of this; 3 volumes dedicated to CoS 1 and the latter 8 (the “Twisted Castle arc”) dedicated to CoS 2. Only the very first 3 chapters were scanlated to English all the way in 2011. Fortunately, I did find the entire manga uploaded though............... in CHINESE. So you know what I did? I “read” the entire thing using my phone’s Google Translate OCR app to take pictures of each page and comprehend the translations. Of course I still don’t understand CRAP because of the Mumei Sekaikan jargon + machine translation but I understood enough to get emotionally attached to some of the characters. I wish I hadn’t. At least through the manga I learned that the characters DO have some depth and pre-established relationships. For instance, the reason why Roger Sasuke became a ninja is because when he first landed in Japan as a kid, he was getting bullied or something and he didn’t know Japanese then Kotaro saw this and told the bullies to stop. Then after Roy /sorry i mean Roger learned that he was set to home-stay with the Kugas in the first place, he decided to dedicate his life to Japan in order to protect Kotaro back. I think. DO U SEE HOW ABSURD THIS SHIT IS Anyway Nanayozuki takes place between the second and third games and sets things up for CoS 3. There’s a full playthrough of it uploaded to YouTube and I think it contains a lot of juicy lore, but it’s just too much to go over with Shitty Google Translate OCR. There’s also Shikigami no Shiro novels which apparently contain the most backstory, but I have a 0% chance of finding these online for free. Not to mention that these would ALSO be too much effort to Google Translate.

in conclusion: You don’t HAVE to play Castle of Shikigami. Like, I’m not gonna recommend it for the content, but if you love shmups and are looking for a shmup game you haven’t heard of then I will recommend it for the gameplay (old touhou mutuals assemble theres a POWER-UP-BY-GRAZE MECHANIC). I’ve counted like 4 total fans outside of Japan that like this series for the story, and I don’t think that number is going to increase because I doubt CoS 2 will ever get retranslated and ported. I just want you to know that this series exists and that there’s a ton of wacky shit behind it besides the bad Castle Shikigami 2 dub. also if someone knows enough japanese or chinese and has an INKLING of interest in this series umm talk to me and help me decipher stuff

I‘m kinda sad that the series is pretty much Dead though. This is the most recent piece of official Castle of Shikigami art I could find, and this was for the 2018 New Year. The next most recent piece of official CoS art I found was also drawn by the character designer Sonoda Miku all the way in January 2008, commemorating the end of the CoS manga serialization. Alfa System released a spiritual sequel to Castle of Shikigami on the Japanese Switch eShop called Sisters Royale, with character designs I think are still by Sonoda. By “spiritual sequel” I mean that it has some of the EXACT same shot types as CoS and the same mechanic where grazing bullets increases your power and score. This is the closest we’ll get to a Shikigami no Shiro 4. I wonder what the business decision behind that game was but it actually looks like fun and I want to play it so OK Go off i guess
