because we changed our opinion on something when it became clear the creator was intent on using her wealth to destroy the lives of trans people worldwide. i think a lot of people underestimate the severity of the situation in my home country — the UK. in the UK, the prime minister’s new policy is schoolchildren are being forceably outted as transgender to their parents by their schools. furthermore, it’s basically becoming illegal to transition if you’re under 18, and functionally impossible for a lot of people older than 18 because government cutbacks have made gender clinics have sometimes 10+ year waiting lists.

i am trans. the other person who created this blog is also trans. many of our closest friends & family are trans, and the trans community means a lot to us. why on earth would we keep doing free advertising for a woman who just keeps spending all that money on lobbying against my rights?

It is not at all disrespectful to ask politely, which you have! I am not going to send a message in his chat because it is an absolute hellhole, but people I know have left thoughtful comments on his youtube, which I think is 20x more useful. He sees those in his own time and can think about it. Chat is running nonstop, super fast, you get instant reaction in the chat from all kinds of sorts - seriously i love jimmy and i have nothing against younger people, but holy hell that chat is mostly intolerable to read. Most streams I don't even have it visible. Jimmy has very little time to think in response to chat messages, it can't be nuanced, and the first thing he says is now public record.

Overall, I don't think Jimmy will react to fanfic. If he does (and I've been wrong predicting Jimmy before!), it's going to be something like Wholesome Seablings Adventures. I can not imagine Jimmy reading ship fic - unless I guess it's incredibly pg canon-ship? There's all kinds of "pg youtubers", and Jimmy's more on the Katherine side of thing, appealing to families and genuinely little kids. If you look at the saucy things he lets in, you generally need some real non-pg context for it to feel non-pg. (there's always exceptions)

When people demand he address shipping he tries to say as little as possible. He's been shown nsfw fanart while he was streaming. He knows what is going on and he's not going to touch that. He's thoughtful when it counts, and since these aren't stream reacts, he has time to think hard about what he's actually going to use. So if he did do fanfic, there would be plenty of never seen footage of Jimmy of going "holy moly!" and moving on. When it matters, he is generally thoughtful and respectful.

Like the time he realized he was confused about asexuality (he didn't know about aromanticism) and slowed down to be really careful he didn't say anything accidentally hurtful. (for context shelby is ace but dates and he knows that. look at his poor little face trying to understand.)

Maybe he'll mess up this time, I sure hope not, but I'm not personally freaking out.

Also, exactly one time he opened tumblr on stream, it was the sexyman poll, and he read my reply to the post (i'm the one who called him a wet paper bag of a man, my claim to fame.) I showed up to apologize, he was a sweetheart, and he said this about tumblr, that he knows we want our own private space. He's respectful at heart.

I am not on tiktok, but until your ask, I'll admit it never occurred to me he might contact the creators before reacting. Thinking on it, I guess I think of TikTok like youtube, where it is loudly tossed out at the whole world for attention, but I'm not on TikTok.

And why do I think ao3 is different? Well, I have no coherent answer besides "vibes" and "more contained audience" and "everyone knows everyone is on youtube and tiktok".

Over the past week, what have I been doing to make sure I keep my mental health in check while balancing my marriage, kids, and business? I'm glad you asked...

Work

Over on our Etsy store VividPrismsTieDye, I uploaded a TON of new shirts. I'm not even joking like 20 something of them. I took pictures of our recent shirts and I'm in the process of editing these pictures to put on the website. We were super impressed with how our new DSLR camera did when we were taking our stock photos. The colors come through SO well. I will never go back to taking pictures with my phone again! I've had to put myself on a strict schedule in order to make sure the shirts don't pile up and then I end up with a mass amount of shirts unlisted. I'm also working on getting the store's instagram looking somewhat presentable. Big changes coming.

My focus for the upcoming week: Spend time each day planning out content for the store's social media, finish editing our latest pictures, and get them up in the store.

Marriage

Check out my last blog post on how our Valentines day went. I am making sure to keep up with our housework to keep our marriage as stress free as possible. We have such a small space, its hard to keep everything organized. A recent tip I read was to thank your husband for the little things he does for you. Little things like when he brings you something you ask for, when he pre heats you car for you in the mornings, getting the kids ready so you can get just a few more minutes of sleep, etc. Thank him for everything, no matter how small. It will let him know how much you appreciate him.

My focus for the upcoming week: Make sure I tell my husband I appreciate him for even the smallest things. Surprise him. Even if it's something small like his favorite candy.

Kids

Now here's the big one I've needed help with this past week. My relationship with my child. I can tell when my anxiety and depression are rearing its ugly head because I start to get frustrated with Arya for developmentally appropriate things. She's been teething lately which has made her more fussy and irritable than usual. Arya's crying has always sent my anxiety through the roof. Especially if I feel as though I'm not helping calm her down. I just have to slow down and remember that it's not me. She's a baby. Babies will do as babies do.

My focus for the upcoming week: When I feel like I'm getting overwhelmed with Arya when she's being unreasonable and unruly, take a step away, a deep breath and center myself. Remind myself that everyone, myself included, has 'bad days' and that I need to be Arya's guiding light while she learns to navigate this thing called life. How do I want her to act when she gets overwhelmed? Because whatever I do, she will mimic.

Self

The big sacrifice I've made lately is wanting to spend more time with my husband and child while neglecting my own laundry. It seems like every time I get done cooking, cleaning, and doing Arya's laundry that I'm burnt out and just can't seem to get around to my own laundry. I wash it, dry it, and then stick it in a basket in our den where it sticks out like a sore thumb. Tonight I'll tackle this monster of a chore before I go to bed because by letting it sit there, its only bothering me more and more.

My focus for the upcoming week: Get this laundry done! Knock it out in one go, and don't let it get to this point again. I have to rip that band aid off sooner or later! Utilize the time after my husband puts my daughter to bed when he goes to sleep, and use that time for some 'me time' while I get this egregious amount of laundry done. Lay out mine and Arya's clothes for the next day. Prepare our lunches, whatever I can do to make the next day's morning just a little bit easier.

This is real life. This is motherhood. It's not always matching mommy and me outfits and perfectly clean white and beige instagram ready homes. To me, that's a completely unrealistic reality to some of us balancing an online business, and 8-5 job, a blog, marriage, kids, self care time, etc. If you CAN balance all of those, good on you. Please let me know your secret. But for ME and a majority of moms out there, we're just doing the best we can to stay afloat.

Hello Killjoys! My name is Steph and welcome to the first blog of MCR Monthly. A monthly blog dedicated to all the new MCR news from this month. Here is what shook the MCRmy this month:

January 3rd:

On January 3rd, My Chemical Romance released an image of a cloaked person with a skeleton mask in a very foggy forest with a shiny dagger. The caption had a United Kingdom flag in it which we now know was hinting at the Milton Keynes MCR Show this June.

January 9th:

After the UK flag caption speculation MCR released an 11 second video of flashing symbols of the Theban alphabet which we now know was also mentioning the UK Show

It reads something along the lines of:

January 14th:

MCR release a photo of a patient in a hospital bed that had just died (noted from the sheet over the head) with a vampire in the caption…as of right now there is no definitive explanation for this, some speculate it could be a call back to The Black Parade….this theory is becoming more accepted after their next post,,

Janurary 17th:

MCR posted a 12 second video of the 1977 Pontiac Firebird (Trans AM) from Danger Days doing stunt moves in the California desert, this was followed up by a direct reference to Danger Days at the end with initial text. Its worth noting that the caption had a United States flag in it,, as of right now we do not know what it could be leading to.

January 19th:

MCR release a video on their website which linked to a youtube video called "An Offering…", the video was an unlisted link only video until it became published by the band on all platforms. On Youtube the video went Trending at reportedly #7 before falling out of Trending. Here is a description of the video:

It's in a foggy forest where we see a cloaked skeleton man running with 2 others walking. There is acoustic guitar similar to 'Romance' playing in the back ground. The main skeleton phantom arrives at a pentagram and puts a dagger in the middle of it as chants begin to be heard (most commonly agreed Gerard was the one who voiced the chanting) as another cloak phantom appeared next to him doing some sort of ritual, the video ends with the UK Show annoucement with the u's being replaced with v's most likely concluding to MCR 5

January 22nd:

(Not important but an mcr post) Ray Toro posted a selfie/photo of a giant robot statute which while wholesome isnt probably important to MCR 5….however Ray is on our nice list for being the only band member willing to say anything but the cryptic stuff we've got, you've done it again Toro!

January 24th:

Tickets for the MCR UK show at the Milton Keynes are announced and sell out within minutes.

Later on that day MCR announce another night at the Milton Keynes and the 2nd night tickets also sell out quickly….but seriously why do you need to see them back to back nights?

Was Malinda Borden, a black woman, on Titanic?

In this post, I will be looking at the story of Malinda Borden, a black passenger claimed to have died on the Titanic, and the various claims within the story. The standard response from many Titanic enthusiasts and historians is to just brush this off with “hoax” or “not true.” That’s not really good enough. When I heard about this, I wanted to dig as deep as I could to see what I could find. The short answer is: The story is not true, it’s entirely fabricated. For the reasons why, and in-depth analysis for the claims, please continue reading. If there are any updates, I will add them to the end of this post as they come.

This is a long post, so I’m putting most of it under a cut. Given the nature of the story, its claims, and the sensitive issues it involves, it may be triggering. Continue at your own discretion. With that in mind...

This post has been making the rounds on Facebook lately. For those who don’t know the Titanic story beyond what they remember from the movie, it might seem plausible, but is it true? What’s the full story? Where did it come from? What’s the evidence? Let’s jump down the rabbit hole!

The story in its above form is the most popular version with 43,000 shares on Facebook, and it's been shared and tweeted in plenty of other places. Snopes debunked it, but they didn’t really look into the story very far. When you dig deeper, you’ll find the story seems to have its roots in a series of posts on Facebook made by someone named Helen Griffin in early 2016. She claimed to be a descendant of Malinda Borden, that this story was passed to her via her grandfather, and that she has a letter telling the story from a black survivor. Griffin posted versions of the story in various places, and one version was featured on a black culture Facebook page:

There’s a lot to unpack there, but there are a number of problems that can be pointed out with the main claims, your standard debunking, including:

There’s no record or account of a Malinda Borden being on Titanic beyond these Facebook posts, in any capacity, on any list, and no body of a black woman was ever found or documented. That doesn’t prove she wasn’t there, necessarily, but all we have to go by are the claims themselves.

The lifeboats were not segregated by race. There is no record at all of that being a policy. In fact, people of color did get into or were rescued by lifeboats, primarily the two half-black children of the one black man who was on Titanic, a Japanese man who jumped into a boat, and six third class Chinese men.

There is nothing to indicate any number of black crew anywhere, in any list, manifest, name, photo, reports, or testimony, nor is there anything in records, plans, or testimony to indicate the presence of a “negro cabin” for black crew. Nor is there evidence for any substantial number of black servants or passengers. Titanic’s manifests have been poured over many times since the disaster, every name studied, every background looked into, and only one black man (along with his two half black children and white wife) have thus far been proven to be on board.

There’s no evidence that black crew would have only been listed on post-sinking lost property lists. Any people on board had to be rigorously documented, be they passengers, servants, or crew. The laws at the time were very strict about this, and the White Star Line and immigration authorities took the careful documenting of all people on board ships very seriously as an issue of health. On top of that, nobody has ever found anything listed on post-sinking claims for lost property (or in any cargo manifest) that could be described as a human being.

While people of color on board would have certainly experienced some level of prejudice, the idea that black crew or passengers were tied to heavy objects and thrown overboard is pure absurdity. Nowhere is anything like that ever mentioned anywhere, by anybody, at any time since the sinking beyond the few Facebook comments made by this one person.

The story has its issues, but that’s not even all of it. The supposed source of the story, the long version as detailed in the letter Griffin claims to have, is most telling about the story’s legitimacy (or lack thereof) because it contains the most claims and details, and if there’s one thing that’ll kill a bad fake story right quick fast in a hurry, it’s detail. The letter contradicts known, proven facts about what happened aboard Titanic, and makes some rather absurd claims. Here is the letter as posted by Griffin in 2016:

The Titaniacs reading this might notice a couple issues right away, but for the uninitiated, here are the things that stand out the most as being historically and factually problematic:

It claims Borden was a nurse. If she’s supposed to be part of the crew, that doesn’t work. Titanic didn’t have any nurses, be they men, women, black or white. There were only two surgeons and a male hospital steward, and their cabins/bunks are accounted for on plans of the ship.

Titanic had six lookouts, all of whom survived to tell their stories. The lookouts worked on strictly scheduled shifts, with none allowing for additional unlisted lookouts. None were black, none were women. In fact, women were generally barred from taking such positions, so even if black people were barred as well, they still wouldn’t let a woman do the job. Of course, if you claim there was a segment of secret unlisted crew who wouldn’t appear on any manifest and who have been hidden from history, I guess you can claim anybody was a lookout, eh?

The letter asserts that only white immigrants and Americans were allowed to leave the lower decks. This is not entirely true, as there were quite a few non-white passengers, especially women, who quite easily made it to the upper decks, although some - along with white passengers - did run into issues with less-bright crewmen and crew who told them to go back below decks in an attempt to keep some semblance of calm (or perhaps because they were racist, who knows).

It also propagates the claim of gates below decks used to keep passengers down. This is mostly a fiction of the 1997 film. While a few Bostwick gates and a couple other types of barriers were used to close off crew areas and separate alternating areas of the classes, there were no gates or barriers preventing people from going up on deck from their respective classes, and some of the below decks access points were even open. The only issues with gates were outside, up on the decks of the ship, far from the lower decks, which were waist-high gates to divide the outside promenades into classes. If there were any issues with gates, it would be there, out in the open with lots of witnesses. Funny, no survivor ever mentioned people being gunned down at the gates.

“A big fat white crew member” - No comment.

What would a crew member be doing with his wife on board? Nothing like that has ever been documented, which you’d expect even in this story since they’re white.

Additionally, there’s no account of anybody ever being in labor or giving birth on the Titanic at any point, least of all during the sinking.

“White female” - Yes, exactly how people talked.

I don’t know how much plastic was on the Titanic or how many poor crew women would have had bras, but plastic and mass-produced, cheap bras were quite new at the time, especially the bras, so that is a very odd line given the context.

I already addressed the black people being tossed overboard, but that absurdity of that line just needs to be pointed out again.

Many hours…” - They’d likely be dead after only a few dozen minutes in the freezing water. A few did survive longer, including one man who may have been more or less in the water for a couple hours, but that was rare.

The boats did not refuse to pick up non-white people. There were very few picked up from the water in the first place, but one of the last ones to be recovered alive from the water was a Chinese man. There are no accounts of the boats refusing to pick up or beat back people who were black after the sinking.

The letter claims one black man flipped an entire lifeboat full of people over, drowning everybody on board while the man survived. Meanwhile, back here in reality, Titanic had 20 lifeboats, all of which were accounted for, with all of them having passengers who survivived. Only one boat ever capsized, and that happened when it was pushed off the roof of the officers’ quarters. It still floated and a number of people found refuge on the overturned lifeboat.

The very existence of the letter itself is problematic. Grammar, for one thing. The author’s posts, in general, have the same kind of bad grammar, spelling, caps, etc., so one might assert it just carried over in the transcription. But then what people in 1912 talked like that? It honestly sounds like something a modern person just made up based on some stuff they remembered from the film and details they pulled out of their rear. Grammar aside, is there a physical letter? If it’s real, there would be a physical letter she transcribed from. Why not show the letter? Even bad fakes in the past have been physical letters you could look at, with effort taken to look old. They didn't just make a badly-written post on Facebook. Has it been studied by experts, verified? (No letter was ever shown as far as I can tell, just this text in a Facebook post.)

The photo posted with the “letter” is also questionable. It’s a picture of a picture, ensuring that no reverse image search can pull up anything. Doing such a search pulls up no previous examples of the photo, and searching with “Titanic” shows only two links where the story is repeated. No other versions have surfaced so far. The name is a mystery, too. One person claimed this as proof:

But if you go back through her lineage, there’s nothing to indicate anything more than that she was born in 1874 in a family from a series of marriages going back to 1770s Virginia. The family’s probably not even African American. She wasn’t the only Malinda Borden, either. Another post from Griffin suggests “Malinda Mary Borden” as the full name, for which you’ll find the following page:

Funny, they don’t seem to have died in the Atlantic ocean in 1912, but in Alabama in 1930. Regardless, without more information on the first Borden, it just doesn’t prove anything.

One of the main claims of the story, and one of its biggest problems, is that there was a shadow crew of all-black people on board Titanic, kept off manifests and listed only as property, housed in segregated cabins. The claim is further detailed in the below comment left by Griffin on a Titanic blog:

The issue here is that we have extensive, detailed lists of every single crewmember aboard Titanic. Historians have spent decades going over the manifests, of people or otherwise, compiling lists, removing people who were proven not to be on board, adding people who were, combing through cemeteries, recovery and death records, records of recovered bodies, finding people’s original names, their families, comparing with accounts and finding records of all sorts. At the same time, we’ve also compiled detailed, well-researched deck plans of Titanic and her identical sister ship, Olympic, so we also know what parts of the ship housed what classes of people and crew, and how many of each type of crew were in the various crew dormitories. When you compare the capacities for the lowest and mid-level boiler and engine room crew with the manifests, you get the following:

161 firemen capacity - 161 on manifest

72 trimmers capacity - 73 on manifest

34 greasers capacity - 33 on manifest

15 leading firemen capacity - 13 on manifest

Doing the same with all other categories of crew on the manifest will give similar results. Nearly every alotted crew bunk is taken, and ever spot on the manifest has a name, and each name has been researched over the decades. None of the listed boiler room crews are known to be black. They were called the “Black Gang,” but that was due to their tendency to get covered in coal dust. 

The claim, of course, is that black crew were unlisted except on manifests of lost property, but that’s still a problem. The spaces allotted for the crew were full when accounting for everybody on the manifest. Where would this extra crew stay? The claim is there was a segregated cabin, but nothing like that has ever been found on any plan, in any record, in any testimony, by any researcher. They wouldn’t be kept in 1st class, or 2nd class, or in aft 3rd class (where single women and families were kept apart from single men). That leaves forward 3rd class. Would the White Star Line really house whole teams of black-only stokers they didn’t need in facilities that were generally nicer than those for the rest of the stokers and adjacent to the rest of 3rd class, taking up cabins from paying passengers for the highly lucrative immigrant routes at the time? The stokers worked in specific shifts, distributed across the boiler rooms so all the furnaces could be serviced, with trimmers moving coal about. They didn’t need an extra all-black cache of super secret unlisted stokers.

But this all leaves an important question: What IS the actual evidence for this story?

Nothing is offered by Griffin beyond the Facebook posts the story comes from and the occasional comment repeating the story. The supposed letter is never shown. The photo isn’t elaborated on. No corroborating details are given about Malinda Borden’s life, nor about the other people mentioned in the letter.

The most you get from its believers is “Google it.” I did just that. With a Google search for “Malinda Borden Titanic”, I got 5 pages of results. Only the first page or so had relevant results. Of those, most were reposts or links to the story. Then there’s the Snopes page debunking it, and a few pages linking to the Snopes page. Finally, there are a couple of original posts of the story and one or two comments from the author. All results point to short versions of the story. To find the full letter, you have to look through Griffin’s Facebook page going back to 2016. There, nestled among hundreds of repeated posts about politics, punctuated by many graphic, horrific photos of lynching victims every few posts, you’ll eventually find the original posts for this story and the text letter.

Beyond that and what I’ve shown here? Nothing. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

Titanic has also been intensely studied since the disaster. It’s quite literally one of the most written-about subjects in modern history. Thousands of historians, authors, and enthusiasts from all walks of life, races, classes, and political affiliations have studied Titanic and written about it. Every aspect of Titanic has been studied front to back, left and right, up and down. Every minute of the sinking has been scrutinized, every word of every survivor account from both inquiries and countless interviews and news pieces analyzed, every detail carefully pieced together. Nowhere is there a gap or an anomaly that would point to the sort of hidden history this story claims exists.

It’s also important to remember that Titanic wasn’t an isolated thing. Stories about Titanic are often larger than life, as if it was a singular, special thing. But it was just a ship that met an unfortunate end. It had an identical sister ship at the time, as well as one that would follow later. The White Star Line had dozens of ships around the world. There were many shipping lines in Britain, Ireland, America, Germany, France, and more. If the policies hinted at in this story were real, we wouldn’t just have to look at Titanic. Olympic sailed until the 1930s and for almost year before Titanic, you’d think there would be something somewhere by now about the secret all-black groups of stokers in the boiler rooms, or the mysterious, unlisted black cooks, stewards, nurses, etc.

This is all to say that, if this story were true, SOMETHING of that would have been discovered in the last 108 years. Some historian would have uncovered this story, or hints of the details told within. And not everyone would sit on that. Some historians would love to overturn what we think we know about history, and something like this would revolutionize and overturn our understanding of the Titanic story. Instead, the only evidence for this story is the story itself as told in a Facebook post from 2016; poorly-written, full of holes, and utterly unconvincing and unsupported. The only thing that props it up is its own vaguery and reliance on conspiratorial unfalsifiability.

In order to believe this story, you have to not only go against a century of some of the most rigorous research and a massive body of evidence, you also have to believe that literally everybody involved in Titanic’s story - every surviving crewmember, every passenger, every builder and White Star Line official, everybody from that time, until the death of the very last survivor in 2010 - and literally everybody involved in Titanic research and publication of any kind in the last 108 years - from Walter Lord to James Cameron and everybody between - is in on a grand, far-reaching conspiracy of coverups. Surely, the story’s apparent originator isn’t a conspiracy theori-

Oh... FUCKING. OOPS.

That’s right. The ROTHSCHILDS. An anti-semitic conspiracy theory you’ll often find favored by, you know, Nazis. The intentional sinking theory that’s only been debunked 44,765,334,896 times, the theory that’s supposedly been covered up by the Jews and the government. Oh and also that nonsense about the bunker fire taking down the whole ship, which was supposedly covered up by the WSL, now mixed in with a super secret unknown crew of black firefighters, whose story has supposedly been successfully covered up by all white people everywhere until one person on Facebook posted it. What’s next, Titanic was switched with Olympic which was then sunk for insurance money, then covered up by the 10,000 workers at Harland and Wolff and the WSL?

And like all conspiracy theories, this story is written in such a way as to make it both unprovable and unfalsifiable. “You can’t prove or disprove it because there are no records and all traces have been covered up.” Some eschew any sort of research in favor of simply believing based on what they feel, like this person:

In the age of Trump, fear, and increasing social and political tensions, in the world of bite-sized tweet-n-share social media, it’s a story that can easily gain traction despite there being no substantiated evidence at all for it. Its believers and defenders do the utmost minimal level of research (”I Googled it and found more than one link for the story!”), make assertions of coverups and use appeals to feelings and numerous fallacies while accusing the story’s skeptics of being racist, ignorant, or in on the grand conspiracy to keep these stories under wraps. (Some people who refute the story probably are racist and ignorant and haven’t offered much beyond “IT’S NOT TRUE DUMBASS!” But that has no bearing on the facts.) To the believers, none of this matters. If someone believes this, why does that matter, even if it’s not true?

Except it should matter. While people focus on this fake story, they miss out on the real stories of real people that were often overlooked until recent decades, stories that are supported by mountains of evidence and documentation.

Like the real story of Titanic’s Chinese passengers:

Eight of them boarded in 3rd class, six survived, with one of them being one of the last people rescued from the water. That rescue was even featured in a deleted scene from the 1997 film. “The Six” as they’re known fell into obscurity upon returning to China, with their story only recently being pieced together in a documentary slated to be released later in 2019.

Or the real story of Masabumi Hosono, the only Japanese man on Titanic:

He boarded in 2nd class and, after initially encountering a crewman who wouldn’t let him on deck because he was assumed to be 3rd class, eventually made it up on deck and into a lifeboat. He faced a great deal of shame upon returning to Japan.

Or the real story of Victor Giglio:

He was the half-Egyptian valet to Benjamin Guggenheim, staying with him in his 1st class stateroom, who “dressed in his best” along with Guggenheim, with both refusing a lifeboat in favor of “going down like gentlemen.”

Or the very real and tragic story of Joseph Philippe Lemercier Laroche:

Laroche was, as far as we know from nearly 108 years of research, the only black person on the Titanic when it sank, although you could say there were three if you count his two half-black daughters. He was an engineer from Haiti who studied in France and was heading back to Haiti in 2nd class along with his pregnant French wife and two daughters, seeking job opportunities that were denied him due to racism in France. They were originally supposed to travel on a French ship, but the line’s strict policies on children made them change their tickets for a voyage on Titanic. During the sinking, Laroche made sure his wife and children got into a lifeboat, but like many other men that night, he stepped back and stayed on board with the hope that rescue would come for the men and others who remained on the ship. It did not, and Laroche died in the sinking.

Titanic’s story isn’t free of prejudice. From antisemitism and anti-Italian sentiments among crew to racism and abuse directed at non-white and poor passengers to some extent or other, as well as the simple fact that almost certainly many on board were just plain racist (it was 1912, after all). Meanwhile, the stories of non-white passengers have indeed often been overlooked, sometimes due to the disinterest and racism of reporters at the time. But despite all that, these stories came out, and really were known to an extent all along, their evidence easy enough to find. That’s just not the case with the Malinda Borden story. The fact is, there were not many people of color on the Titanic, and even fewer black people. Making up and propagating likely false stories about there secretly being tons of black crew and passengers based on literally no evidence at all (the only evidence offered for this story is the story itself), I believe, takes away from the precious few stories that are true.

Nor is there nothing to be woke about. White people in positions of power and in general have covered up or ignored all sorts of racist acts and black history. Education has utterly failed in that regard. The lessons from black leaders have been diluted into soundbites white people can feel good about. COINTELPRO, Jim Crow and more on the government side, a long history of segregation and discrimination on the business side. There are many proven, documented, substantiated examples of genuine coverups and covert racism in government and business, disenfranchisement, and more. This story, however, is not one of them. Be woke, just don’t be so woke that you fall out of the bed, hit your head on the nightstand, and pass out again.

You don’t have to accept or believe any of this, though. Few of those faced with refutations of the story did, appealing to attacks and fallacious arguments instead. A Titanic researcher friend of mine was told to go “jack off to a Trump poster” for doubting this story. Do with this (and that) what you will.

UPDATE 1:

In the months since posting this, there definitely has not been anything to prove anything with this story. In fact, much of the “evidence” I covered here no longer exists. The Facebook page of Helen Griffin no longer exists and their posts are gone, and it’s possible some other posts about this vanished as well. I was going to add something about how you can do your own research on this if you feel it necessary, but that’s apparently impossible now. All that’s left of this story on social media now are the various reposts of the short summaries of the main claim. This Tumblr post, and possibly a few buried comments on one of the Facebook posts linked here, are the only places you’ll likely be able to find the full version of the story that sparked these claims. Of course, the original content may be gone, but the story they spawned will no doubt continue to be spread.

Can South-East Asian Tech’s Hot Streak Last?

Foreign investors cannot get enough of Sea, Grab, Gojek and other regional unicorns

When uber came to South-East Asia, the Silicon Valley ride-hailing giant coaxed customers into cabs with free ice cream, a tactic it had deployed in Western markets. Grab, a local rival based in Singapore, plied riders with durian, a pungent tropical fruit that repels many Westerners but is beloved of people in places like Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. GrabDurian, as it called the effort, delivered several varieties of the fruit (as well as desserts made from the stuff). After years of brutal rivalry Grab acquired Uber’s South-East Asian operations in 2018. The tale lives on as a lesson for doing business in the region, which is home to nearly 700m people. Digital services such as ride-hailing and food delivery can thrive—so long as they adapt to local conditions.

Now it is Western investors who are salivating. In the past year South-East Asia’s internet-startup scene has got hotter than Thai chilli peppers. The market capitalisation of Sea, another Singaporean group that listed in New York in 2017 (and whose name alludes to the shorthand for South-East Asia widely used in the region), has quintupled in the past year, to a mighty $125bn. On April 13th Grab said it would go public on New York’s Nasdaq stock exchange by merging with a special-purpose acquisition company (spac). The deal values the company at nearly $40bn. Gojek, an Indonesian ride-hailing group valued at more than $10bn, could merge with an e-commerce firm called Tokopedia, before also considering listing via a spac in New York. Traveloka, another local unicorn (as unlisted startups worth $1bn or more are known), is reportedly in talks to list in New York via a spac. All told, the region’s half-dozen biggest internet darlings are worth nearly $200bn.

Wall Street, in other words, has finally woken up to South-East Asia’s great promise. The region is more populous than the European Union or North America. Its economies are growing fast. Wealthy, English-speaking Singapore at its heart is a global financial centre, with all the bankers, lawyers, consultants, admen and creative types that a modern firm needs. Critically, American and Chinese tech giants have a patchy record of coping with the region’s archipelagic geography, potholed roads and unbanked masses. Besides Uber’s abortive foray, China’s Alibaba has struggled to turn around Lazada, a regional e-commerce firm it bought in 2016. Meanwhile, local internet firms have thrived. As they grow they will face another challenge: bumping into each other.

The South-East Asian tech firms began in their own separate niches. Sea started out in gaming. When Grab launched in 2012 it was a taxi-hailing service in Malaysia. Gojek gave out smartphones to Jakarta’s moped drivers (known as ojek), who could then cut through the Indonesian capital’s epic traffic jams to bring mangoes, a manicurist or any other product or personal service offered by merchants on its platform to consumers. Traveloka specialised in airline bookings; Tokopedia was a digital marketplace.

All have since expanded, evolving towards becoming “super-apps” with parallels to those run by Alibaba and Tencent, China’s biggest internet firms. Grab is present in eight countries and in addition to rides offers food delivery, mobile payments, insurance, investments and health advice. Last year it launched corporate services such as fraud detection, digital maps and advertising. This year it plans to start setting up a digital bank in Singapore. Tan Hooi Ling, its co-founder, says that the firm is “like Uber, DoorDash [an American food-delivery app] and Ant [Alibaba’s financial-technology affiliate] all wrapped into one”. Gojek, which now offers a similar suite of services, last year bought a large stake in an Indonesian bank. The co-ceo, Kevin Aluwi, also sees similarities between his firm and the Chinese super-apps. “We are a little bit of all those companies in some ways,” he observes.

As Grab, Gojek and the others continue to grow they will still have to grapple with some of the problems that have dampened the spirits of the foreign titans. Until roads, transport links and communications networks improve, many of the region’s consumers will be too expensive for the tech firms to reach profitably. Nirgunan Tiruchelvam of Tellimer, a broker specialising in emerging markets, notes that the logistical nightmare of delivering online-shopping baskets to Indonesia’s 6,000 inhabited islands is vastly different to e-commerce in China, which has world-class infrastructure, let alone the West. What is more, much of the population will remain poor for years to come, with little discretionary cash to spend on online shopping and investment products.

Even if the upstart digital champions surmount these obstacles they will increasingly face one another. As their offerings broaden they will inevitably begin to overlap. Grab and Gojek already compete for the same customers in areas from ride-hailing to finance. In Indonesia, by far the biggest market, they are burning through cash as they fight over customers in markets where switching costs are low. Neither has turned a profit. Grab’s gross operating loss narrowed in 2020 but still amounted to $800m.

Sink or Swim?

High growth means investors are tolerant: Sea’s revenue expanded by 101% last year and it makes money on its preferred measure of profit, thanks to its gaming business. Grab has told investors that it expects to break even by 2023. Mr Aluwi of Gojek sees enough room for several successful firms. “I don’t think this is a winner-take-all market,” he says.

Yet to justify the unicorns’ sky-high valuations, foreign backers may be assuming otherwise. Since 2015 venture capitalists, tech groups (including Alibaba and Tencent, as well as Google and SoftBank) and Wall Street veterans (such as kkr, a private-equity behemoth) have ploughed $26bn into the region, according to Dealogic. Grab’s spac is backed by, among others, BlackRock, the world’s biggest asset manager. Some of these investments may leave a bitter aftertaste. But given the region’s potential, others are bound to end up tasting as sweet as a ripe durian.■

AMA Transcript: Awoken

This past week, @professor-maka​ and @sahdah​ stopped in to chat about their work on their 2016 Resbang, Awoken! Here’s some of what went down:

Q: How did your fic change/evolve over time? Any deleted scenes/headcanons you couldn't fit into the fic?

ProMa: Sort of? In that I wasn't exactly sure how far I wanted to take the plot at first, and at one point considered a Medusa appearance but decided I liked flipping the villain expectation too much to fuss with it.

Q: How the frick did you write the songs and stuff?? It was so good and hilarious.

ProMa: Ahhhh I can't music which is why the songs are either poems (only the first, and it's intentionally bad) or I took actual songs and just--modified lyrics in the same meter.

Q: You wrote your own lyrics tho?

ProMa: I did. I carefully plotted to the meter of the original. Or in the case of Ox's first song, just kept a really trite meter.

Q: Gotta ask the obvious question: What made you want to do an Enchanted AU!!

ProMa: It's a really fun movie, and I just felt I could do something fun with it. Though I'll admit there's a heavy Enchanted Forest Chronicles in there, too.

Q: What was the hardest scene to write?

ProMa: Hardest to write was hmmmm... Maka waking up the second time. I got stuck in that section forever.

Q: And which scene did you write first?? Loved the song summons btw. It made me laugh so hard.

ProMa: I wrote it pretty much in order except in a few places where I wrote the song before the scene, so the taxi scene came first. The song summons was so fun to write. I wanted to take that scene from Enchanted and completely flip it on its head.

Q: Proma, I love the running gag with the disembodied music, was that from the AU's or your own detail?

ProMa: Disembodied music was just drawing from the brand of humor in Enchanted Forest Chronicles, Patrick Dempsey's reactions in Enchanted, and the reality of musicals. So basically my take on it, lol.

Q: How early in the process did you figure out that Ox was gonna be the prince? Were you always sure it would be him or did you have to narrow it down?

ProMa: Ox was my prince pretty much from the get go. He just fit what I wanted to do. I was going for the more noble version of Hans from Frozen.

Q: Was there anything weird that you didn't expect to make it into the final cut?

ProMa: The potty humor I definitely wasn't sure I would keep. But I am 14 at heart and kept it.

Q: Alternately, anything you wanted to keep but had to cut?

ProMa: I kind of wanted a Black Star appearance but time and plot arc did not allow. Also Wes was not in the original plan but he happened anyway.

Q: Tell us about the art collab! How did it work for you?

ProMa: They were really enthusiastic and supportive and started throwing ideas out from the get go! 

sahdah: Read voraciously, threw my ideas at Proma. 

ProMa: The poster image sahdah did was so great she worked on it forever! sahdah: Proma was super chill and awesome about things, I'd ask for direction and she gave like dress ideas. It was so much fun! 

ProMa: And rogha's painting was lovely.

Q: What was the hardest thing about that poster image?

sahdah: Ahhh the coloring. I did pen drawing and scanned but I'd just gotten a tablet for digital so working the layers was interesting. I had lots of support from Proma and Aer!

Q: How many drafts did you do before you decided on a final image for the art?

sahdah: Um, it started off with just Maka, and then Ox got added. And then I think Kim was next - this is all on the same page - and I knew Soul in a beanie had to be there. So it just grew. 

ProMa: It grew in the most glorious way possible. Sahdah kept sending me updates and I just [said] YES YES GOOD YES.

ProMa: That scene is one of the more direct lifts from the film. It's really nasty. Vermin squick me so hard, but vermin summoning is one of the most hilarious things in the film. I HAD to.

Q: I'm kinda mad with how it was not awkward or cheesy. How do you put Wham in a story and make it charming?

ProMa: I have no idea. I love Wham, they were my first album. Call it a labor of pure love.

Q: Is it possible for Mr. Proma to do a cover the fic songs?

ProMa: It'd be hilarious but he'd side eye me hard. Very not his genre. Well, maybe the Foo Fighters. :') I would laugh so hard to hear them performed though. Maybe someday someone will perform one and make my life.

ProMa: Hmmmmm man I just reread it. I wish I'd edited another round, because I missed some dumb reppy shit and just dumb shit. Also, the ending could be drawn out a bit. So I would do that if I had it to do again. But I was in serious time crunch mode.

Q: I am so impressed with how much fic you can crank out, Proma.

sahdah: Proma cranked out the last bit of the fic in... what was it, like 2 days? 

ProMa: Yeah, the last third was very fast. 

sahdah: I'm like WAIT!!! SO MUCH I NEED TO ART. 

ProMa: Sahdah did her second two pieces in like two days so MASS APPLAUSE.

ProMa: And those pieces are great too.

Q: How does one do that, pull out quality in such a short time?

ProMa: I write fast under pressure. It's a skill I picked up in school that weirdly translates into creative things. Thank you, undergrad all nighters.

Q: Proma, [in the] epilogue, how does Ox fare with Kim?

ProMa: Omg Ox does not fare with Kim. She is all about dat Jackie. But I mean, he has his kingdom. Even if Spirit gives him constant shit for the rest of his days.

Q: How does Spirit react to maka moving?

ProMa: Spirit is so dejected. I haven't worked it out, but he would definitely seek Maka out. Might even just hand the kingdom to Ox eventually, and go [to the] whole other world. He will visit, that's not even arguable. That omake I will heavily consider. 

Q: Proma, one thing that I was interested to see and that I think I'm glad about is that you didn't do the whole Aesop where Maka has to go back and learn how to break the curse, find happiness in her own world. While I can appreciate that message and I think it has its place, I also think that if people could really do that... there are probably people who would find a place and feel better somewhere other than their "home world." I mean, you could translate the "world" metaphor to people choosing to leave a toxic family of origin, which would be a good thing.

ProMa: Oh yeah, I was never going to go there. This was about Maka shaping her own life on her terms. I was not going for archetypes at alllll. Blair was always my choice for the fairy godmother role. It's so canon anyway. You can do some good things with that trope, it just wasn't the goal. Maka staying in her new life definitely came from the source -- even if a lot of the source is altered beyond recognition. 

sahdah: I also love Maka working to improve herself on her terms. Like the details with the soufflé. 

ProMa: I definitely borrowed some flavor from Wrede.

ProMa: That's one of the biggest actual pulls from the movie though -- I flipped it completely. Giselle summons vermin to clean the messy house. Yeah, that is not Maka. Maka just wants her crap back and she's not into the singing thing.

Bitstamp to Add Bitcoin Cash Trading in December

Cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp will support three Bitcoin Cash trading pairs – BCH/USD, BCH/EUR, and BCH/BTC – starting the first week of December due to customer demand.

Bitstamp, the twelfth largest crypto exchange by volume and the seventh highest ranked exchange on BestBitcoinExchange.io, recently announced it would support Bitcoin Cash (BCH) trading starting the first week of December.

Bitcoin Cash is currently trading around $1600. Although originally supported by only a handful of exchanges following its creation on August 1st, BCH’s recent price surges have spurred demand for it on other platforms. It currently holds the third highest market cap at $26 billion, behind Bitcoin and Ethereum.

An announcement on the Bitstamp website states:

In response to the demand we have been seeing for Bitcoin Cash trading (BCH) and as part of our efforts to list more currencies, we have decided to provide trading support for the following three pairs: BCH/USD, BCH/EUR, and BCH/BTC.

Bitcoin Cash will be the fifth tradeable cryptocurrency available on Bitstamp. Three of its four other available currencies – Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple – all claim the top four highest market caps, with Bitcoin Cash filling in third. It’s fifth cryptocurrency, Litecoin, sits at seventh.

The Winding Path Towards Acceptance

The announcement marks a significant milestone for Bitcoin Cash, which contentiously divided the crypto community well before its creation on August 1. It was created following deep disagreements over how to expand Bitcoin network capacity and resolve burgeoning congestion issues.

Proponents of Bitcoin Cash favored increasing Bitcoin’s block sizes, an “on-chain solution”, rather than adopting another proposal named Segregated Witness (SegWit), an “off-chain solution”. Debates over the proper solution effectively split the community into two camps. When SegWit was ultimately locked in by voter consensus, supporters of big blocks decided to fork Bitcoin and create Bitcoin Cash instead.

Despite the split now months behind us, BCH continues to face controversy over a myriad of issues, most prominently its use of the “Bitcoin” name. Opponents claim that its use of the Bitcoin brand confuses new investors and that the coin promotes itself as “the real Bitcoin” while sabotaging the credibility of the original Bitcoin project.

Uncertainty over the new coin prompted several exchanges to keep it unlisted following its creation. Coinbase, one of the world’s largest and most popular Bitcoin exchanges, initially refused to credit their customers with BCH during the split. They later reversed this stance following consumer backlash and a mass exodus of customers moving their BTC to other exchanges where their BCH would be honored. However, BCH withdrawals will still not be available there until January 1, 2018.

Other exchanges and wallets which initially did not support Bitcoin Cash include Poloniex (later added mid-August) and the BitPay wallet (added September).

Bitcoin Cash prices initially spiked above $700 within its first day of trading, though prices quickly fell off soon after as investors moved to sell off their coins for free profits. Within a week, BCH had settled down to a stable price of $200, although it continued to be traded and held by a small community of supporters.

Rising From The Ashes

In spite of these early setbacks, Bitcoin Cash persisted, and it’s infrastructure support has grown significantly since its early days. It is now supported by over 35 exchanges and is 9677 blocks ahead of the original chain. It is also currently 4.4% more profitable to mine on the Bitcoin Cash blockchain.

Demand for BCH has also jumped sporadically in response to market events. The value unexpectedly tripled in late August when BCH mining became more profitable following a 50% drop in mining difficulty. An increased demand from South Korea also drove up prices.

More recently, on November 8, the SegWit2x proposal (which would have implemented 2Mb block sizes in Bitcoin on top of SegWit) was cancelled. This spurred numerous investors to move to from BTC to BCH, which has already implemented increased block sizes. The subsequent rush into BCH drove prices to an all-time high of $2400. Although it crashed soon after, it has still maintained price levels well over $1000, a marked increase from its previous levels under $500.

Some exchanges still refuse to trade in Bitcoin Cash. BitMEX, the largest Bitcoin exchange by volume, actually announced it would be selling all of its customers’ BCH in exchange for BTC. Interestingly, it was increased demand for BCH which finally prompted the exchange to acknowledge it. BitMEX previously took a harsh stance against the coin, releasing a statement claiming that “BitMEX considers any and all contentious hardfork tokens as altcoins.”

This unusual move by BitMEX only underscores the suspicion many continue to have over Bitcoin Cash and its community. Nonetheless, BCH’s recent price gains and continued support seems to solidify BCH’s position as a serious cryptocurrency.

Anonymous LLC Demand Accelerates as F&B Purveyors Pursue Privacy Protection in the Information Age

Today’s business landscape is becoming increasingly fluid, with more people than ever owning and operating professional enterprises—whether as their main occupation, a “side hustle” or both. In fact, one report reveals there are fully 582 million entrepreneurs in the world. This includes restaurant and food truck owners; bed and breakfast operators; sellers on eBay, Etsy, Shopify, Amazon and the like; and independents taking advantage of today’s burgeoning gig economy that’s transcending limitations of yore.

Amid the escalating desire for the independence and control that comes with business ownership, for many there is a downside: compromised privacy. No matter the size of the enterprise or number of employees—even solo-preneurship—there are a multitude of situations and reasons one might prefer to keep their business ownership private. Doing so is nothing new and can be hugely beneficial. As one infamous example, in the early 1960’s the Walt Disney Company formed various corporations under different names to purchase large parcels of swamp land in Central Florida—land that Walt Disney World sits upon today. The plan for the land to be purchased by various “shell companies” was highly successful.  The Walt Disney Company was able to fend off a burst of land speculation that surely would have halted the project before it could get started, had word got out that Disney was expanding to Florida.

Of course, smaller business owners don’t need the clout and funds of Walt Disney to achieve some level of privacy and anonymity with their own business endeavors.  In fact, the concept is called “Anonymous LLC,” which is becoming increasingly popular amongst today’s breed of business owners. This momentum to shield one’s business ownership is due, in large part, to the Internet having reached critical mass … now a ubiquitous and readily tapped resource.  Privacy is no longer as simple as maintaining an unlisted number in the phone book. With the advent of the Internet, anyone in the world can access information about veritably anyone, every day and at any time. Details that, in decades past, would have taken the expertise of a private investigator.

While the growing popularity of business ownership anonymity is an understandable, and even natural, response to today’s challenges in an effort to establish and maintain privacy, it has not been without controversy.  Some feel the practice of anonymous incorporation is abused or is simply an attempt to cover up illegal practices. To address this misconception and generally explore the benefits of anonymous enterprises, I connected with Law 4 Small Business (L4SB)—a business law firm with multiple offices throughout the United States—for some clarity on the matter.

At the forefront in helping business owners achieve venture anonymity is L4SB Principal Attorney, Founder and Partner Larry Donahue, who has been a pioneer and preeminent advocate for the “Anonymous LLC” for nearly two decades. In fact, not only is Donahue credited for giving the “Anonymous LLC” its name, he is reportedly the first to provide this service to the public. So, it’s no surprise that, while his firm offers a breadth of business law services, Donahue cites Anonymous LLCs as his firm’s most requested service. Also notable is the fact that L4SB, one of the few law firms that has tackled the virtual legal landscape, has made it possible for anyone in the world to readily secure an Anonymous LLC online. This as Donahue champions the role an Anonymous LLC plays in protecting legitimate business owners in the modern era. Below are some of Donahue’s key insights in relation.

MK: First, to cover the most fundamental question, can you elaborate on what an Anonymous LLC is and the process to set it up?

LD: Simply put, an Anonymous LLC is defined as a limited liability company whose owners are not publicly identifiable by the state. It avoids public disclosure of ownership information of the LLC (i.e. Members) in the state in which the LLC is registered. This is accomplished by registering a normal, regular LLC carefully and lawfully in the states that permit anonymity. And/or it can also be accomplished by creating what’s called a “parent/child” arrangement. In this scenario, the “parent” company is an Anonymous LLC that acts as a Holding Company, which then owns a lawful Operating Company (“child”) in any state where it conducts business.

To be clear, there is legally no such thing as an “Anonymous LLC.” Were you to walk into a bank and tell them you have an Anonymous LLC, they will probably look at you like you’re crazy.  An “Anonymous LLC” is actually a regular LLC, but one that’s registered by our firm in a specialized way that prevents public disclosure of ownership information.  Our law firm acts as the organizer and registered agent for the Anonymous LLC in select states and utilizes its status as a law firm to convey attorney-client privilege and confidentiality.  Thus, an Anonymous LLC helps preserve the privacy of business owners by not permitting the ownership information to be associated with the LLC filing.

When our firm files an Anonymous LLC for clients in a state where such anonymity is possible, their personal information remains undisclosed and unpublished to the public. Because of this, Anonymous LLCs protect privacy, preserve confidentiality and even prevent harassment.

MK: Are Anonymous LLC’s available everywhere in the U.S.?

LD: There are a number of states that permit Anonymous LLC’s, but the most popular are Delaware, New Mexico and Wyoming.  There are advantages and disadvantages with all three, but New Mexico is considered very private.  That being said, for our firm’s part, L4SB utilizes all states as appropriate for each client, depending on where and how they are conducting business.  New Mexico Anonymous LLCs proffer the strongest privacy.

MK: I understand your firm is realizing exponential growth for its Anonymous LLC option. Who exactly is buying them?

LD: Everybody. Seriously. Our own firm has experienced year-over-year sales for Anonymous LLC’s, which are growing by triple digits. The types of owners are diverse and include everything from businesses you see when you drive down the street to those who own rental properties and would prefer their tenants utilize their property manager and not contact them personally.  Others include those who sell goods online through e-commerce platforms and do not want their names and home addresses published with their seller information. Some of our clients (or their families) were previously threatened, harassed or stalked since their business ownership information was publicly accessible.

Yet other of our clients are abuse victims and want to own a company without disclosing their locations to their former abusers. A portion of our clients are of a higher profile, including celebrities, politicians, Fortune 500 executives and professional athletes who simply do not want to not have every business investment they make publicized.

I can tell you that all our clients place a lot of value in being able to avoid the massive amounts of robocalls and junk mail that commence once a company is publicly formed. Also, let me not forget “Asset Protection 101.”  Many of our clients are sent to us by their CPA’s, Estate Attorneys or Financial Planners since the main reason that LLC’s exist is to legally separate personal and business assets.

MK: So, to be crystal clear, would you say it’s a misconception that anonymous business ownership is reserved for those wanting to do something illegal?

LD: (Laughs) Yes, that’s a complete falsehood. The urban legend or myth is that Anonymous LLCs are a way for people to evade taxes, for so-called Slum Lords to avoid accountability, or for “Dead Beat Dads” to flee their child support obligations. The list of presumptions goes on and I’m certainly aware of these criticisms. I suppose any procedure or law can be twisted or perverted to try to facilitate an unsavory outcome.  At the end of the day, criminals will find a way to commit crime.  Remember Enron?  That was a very public company.  And I should underscore that Anonymous LLCs are not actually anonymous to financial institutions and the IRS.

Moreover, any licensed and upstanding attorney like myself would not facilitate unethical or criminal activity, which could result in disbarment and possibly jail time. These are two scenarios any legitimate and honorable attorney would want to avoid at all costs.  I cannot speak for those who are unethical, or even non-lawyers out there who are claiming to sell the same service.

Their objective need not be mal-intent when it comes to an Anonymous LLCs, but rather a feasible tool for legitimate businesses who seek privacy for justifiable reasons through legally-available means. I, myself, have been a business attorney for over 25 years and can tell you that lawyers are not who criminals call up ahead of time to consult with on the best way to break the law.

MK: You mentioned that the facilitating law firm does play a role in the business owner’s enterprise. Can you expand on that?

LD: With respect to how we approach Anonymous LLCs, the structure is set up to place our law firm as the Registered Agent. This means communications to the companies we have formed flow through the law firm and we, in turn, forward those communications to our clients. It is the modern-day version of a business owner handing out their attorney’s card to anyone who has a question about the business.  If the concern is legitimate, it will be dealt with timely and professionally.  If the interest is simply to pry, solicit or harass, there is nothing there to see, so to speak. Those who have no legitimate need to inquire or poke around in the first place tend to move along, leaving our client and their business undisturbed.

MK: So, why now?  If the concept of Registered Agents and “shell companies” have been around for decades, what is all of the recent attention about?    

LD: The foremost driver of the Anonymous LLC has really just been current circumstances. Modern technology makes it too easy for business and personal information to be searched and obtained. The toxic political, societal and other cultural environments also spur folks to seek out their adversaries and “make it personal”—all exacerbated by social media.  I do not feel like anyone welcomes the idea of having a public listing of their assets, investments, personal information, phone numbers, photos, addresses, family members and more on display for the entire world to see. Think about it; All this information, if not insulated in some way, is only a few mouse clicks away on, perhaps, all of us.

I unequivocally agree that businesses should be registered with the state and everyone should pay their taxes, but I disagree with the notion that the average citizen forgoes their right to privacy when they decide to form a business entity or invest their assets. I view the Anonymous LLC as a critical instrument helping owners conduct business without placing themselves or their families at risk of harm or harassment.

One would be hard pressed to argue that the rapid sharing of ideas and information has diminished privacy on some level, if not profoundly. On the upside, the Anonymous LLC exists as one of the few legal, viable and readily-accessible tools available to protect it.

The Bank is extending loans primarily to small borrowers. As on March 31, 2019, 54.10% of the total advances are up to the ticket size of ₹ 25 lacs.

Conversion of the Bank to Small Finance Bank has removed the geographical barriers for expansion, resulting in exponential growth of the Bank in all spheres. The business of the Bank is expected to grow to ₹ 18,000 crores by March 31, 2023 with 265 number of Branches.

While the slightly smaller screen coupled with a better screen to body ratio means a device that’s surprisingly slim.

If anything, the Note 10+ feels like the true successor to the Note line. The baseline device could have just as well been labeled the Note 10 Lite. That’s something Samsung is keenly aware of, as it targets first-time Note users with the 10 and true believers with the 10+. In both cases, Samsung is faced with the same task as the rest of the industry: offering a compelling reason for users to upgrade.

Earlier this week, a Note 9 owner asked me whether the new device warrants an upgrade. The answer is, of course, no. The pace of smartphone innovation has slowed, even as prices have risen. Honestly, the 10 doesn’t really offer that many compelling reasons to upgrade from the Note 8.

That’s not a slight against Samsung or the Note, per se. If anything, it’s a reflection on the fact that these phones are quite good — and have been for a while. Anecdotally, industry excitement around these devices has been tapering for a while now, and the device’s launch in the midst of the doldrums of August likely didn’t help much.

The past few years have seen smartphones transform from coveted, bleeding-edge luxury to necessity. The good news to that end, however, is that the Note continues to be among the best devices out there.

The common refrain in the earliest days of the phablet was the inability to wrap one’s fingers around the device. It’s a pragmatic issue. Certainly you don’t want to use a phone day to day that’s impossible to hold. But Samsung’s remarkable job of improving screen to body ratio continues here. In fact, the 6.8-inch Note 10+ has roughly the same footprint as the 6.4-inch Note 9.

The issue will still persist for those with smaller hands — though thankfully Samsung’s got a solution for them in the Note 10. For the rest of us, the Note 10+ is easily held in one hand and slipped in and out of pants pockets. I realize these seem like weird things to say at this point, but I assure you they were legitimate concerns in the earliest days of the phablet, when these things were giant hunks of plastic and glass.

Samsung’s curved display once again does much of the heavy lifting here, allowing the screen to stretch nearly from side to side with only a little bezel at the edge. Up top is a hole-punch camera — that’s “Infinity O” to you. Those with keen eyes no doubt immediately noticed that Samsung has dropped the dual selfie camera here, moving toward the more popular hole-punch camera.

The company’s reasoning for this was both aesthetic and, apparently, practical. The company moved back down to a single camera for the front (10 megapixel), using similar reasoning as Google’s single rear-facing camera on the Pixel: software has greatly improved what companies can do with a single lens. That’s certainly the case to a degree, and a strong case can be made for the selfie camera, which we generally require less of than the rear-facing array.

The company’s gone increasingly minimalist with the design language — something I appreciate. Over the years, as the smartphone has increasingly become a day to day utility, the product’s design has increasingly gotten out of its own way. The front and back are both made of a curved Gorilla Glass that butts up against a thin metal form with a total thickness of 7.9 millimeters.

On certain smooth surfaces like glass, you’ll occasionally find the device gliding slightly. I’d say the chances of dropping it are pretty decent with its frictionless design language, so you’re going to want to get a case for your $1,000 phone. Before you do, admire that color scheme on the back. There are four choices in all. Like the rest of the press, we ended up with Aura Glow.

It features a lovely, prismatic effect when light hits it. It’s proven a bit tricky to photograph, honestly. It’s also a fingerprint magnet, but these are the prices we pay to have the prettiest phone on the block.

One of the interesting footnotes here is how much the design of the 10 will be defined by what the device lost. There are two missing pieces here — both of which are a kind of concession from Samsung for different reasons. And for different reasons, both feel inevitable.

The headphone jack is, of course, the biggie. Samsung kicked and screamed on that one, holding onto the 3.5mm with dear life and roundly mocking the competition (read: Apple) at every turn. The company must have known it was a matter of time, even before the iPhone dropped the port three years ago.

Courage.

Samsung glossed over the end of the jack (and apparently unlisted its Apple-mocking ads in the process) during the Note’s launch event. It was a stark contrast from a briefing we got around the device’s announcement, where the company’s reps spent significantly more time justifying the move. They know us well enough to know that we’d spend a little time taking the piss out of the company after three years of it making the once ubiquitous port a feature. All’s fair in love and port. And honestly, it was mostly just some good-natured ribbing. Welcome to the club, Samsung.

The headphone jack dies not with a bang, but a Note

As for why Samsung did it now, the answer seems to be two-fold. The first is a kind of critical mass in Bluetooth headset usage. Allow me to quote myself from a few weeks back:

The tipping point, it says, came when its internal metrics showed that a majority of users on its flagship devices (the S and Note lines) moved to Bluetooth streaming. The company says the number is now in excess of 70% of users.

Also, as we’re all abundantly aware, the company put its big battery ambitions on hold for a bit, as it dealt with…more burning problems. A couple of recalls, a humble press release and an eight-point battery check later, and batteries are getting bigger again. There’s a 3,500mAh on the Note 10 and a 4,300mAh on the 10+. I’m happy to report that the latter got me through a full day plus three hours on a charge. Not bad, given all of the music and videos I subjected it to in that time.

There’s no USB-C dongle in-box. The rumors got that one wrong. You can pick up a Samsung-branded adapter for $15, or get one for much cheaper elsewhere. There is, however, a pair of AKG USB-C headphones in-box. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Samsung doesn’t get enough credit for its free headphones. I’ve been known to use the pairs with other devices. They’re not the greatest the world, but they’re better sounding and more comfortable than what a lot of other companies offer in-box.

Obviously the standard no headphone jack things apply here. You can’t use the wired headphones and charge at the same time (unless you go wireless). You know the deal.

The other missing piece here is the Bixby button. I’m sure there are a handful of folks out there who will bemoan its loss, but that’s almost certainly a minority of the minority here. Since the button was first introduced, folks were asking for the ability to remap it. Samsung finally relented on that front, and with the Note 10, it drops the button altogether.

Thus far the smart assistant has been a disappointment. That’s due in no small part to a late launch compared to the likes of Siri, Alexa and Assistant, coupled with a general lack of capability at launch. In Samsung’s defense, the company’s been working to fix that with some pretty massive investment and a big push to court developers. There’s hope for Bixby yet, but a majority of users weren’t eager to have the assistant thrust upon them.

Instead, the power button has been shifted to the left of the device, just under the volume rocker. I preferred having it on the other side, especially for certain functions like screenshotting (something, granted, I do much more than the average user when reviewing a phone). That’s a pretty small quibble, of course.

Bixby can now be quickly accessed by holding down the power button. Handily, Samsung still lets you reassign the function there, if you really want Bixby out of your life. You can also hold down to get the power off menu or double press to launch Bixby or a third-party app (I opted for Spotify, probably my most used these days), though not a different assistant.

Imaging, meanwhile, is something Samsung’s been doing for a long time. The past several generations of S and Note devices have had great camera systems, and it continues to be the main point of improvement. It’s also one of few points of distinction between the 10 and 10+, aside from size.

The Note 10+ has four, count ’em, four rear-facing cameras. They are as follows:

Ultra Wide: 16 megapixel

Wide: 12 megapixel

Telephoto: 12 megapixel

DepthVision

That last one is only on the plus. It’s comprised of two little circles to the right of the primary camera array and just below the flash. We’ll get to that in a second.

The main camera array continues to be one of the best in mobile. The inclusion of telephoto and ultra-wide lenses allow for a wide range of different shots, and the hardware coupled with machine learning makes it a lot more difficult to take a bad photo (though believe me, it’s still possible).

The live focus feature (Portrait mode, essentially) comes to video, with four different filters, including Color Point, which makes everything but the subject black and white.

Samsung’s also brought a very simple video editor into the mix here, which is nice on the fly. You can edit the length of clips, splice in other clips, add subtitles and captions and add filters and music. It’s pretty beefy for something baked directly into the camera app, and one of the better uses I’ve found for the S Pen.

Ditto for the improved Super Steady offering, which smooths out shaky video, including Hyperlapse mode, where handshakes are a big issue. It works well, but you do lose access to other features, including zoom. For that reason, it’s off by default and should be used relatively sparingly.

Zoom-on Mic is a clever addition, as well. While shooting video, pinch-zooming on something will amplify the noise from that area. I’ve been playing around with it in this cafe. It’s interesting, but less than perfect.

Zooming into something doesn’t exactly cancel out ambient noise from outside of the frame. Everything still gets amplified in the process and, like digital picture zoom, a lot of noise gets added in the process. Those hoping for a kind of spy microphone, I’m sorry/happy to report that this definitely is not that.

The DepthVision Camera is also pretty limited as I write this. If anything, it’s Samsung’s attempt to brace for a future when things like augmented reality will (theoretically) play a much larger role in our mobile computing. In a conversation I had with the company ahead of launch, they suggested that a lot of the camera’s AR functions will fall in the hands of developers.

For now, Quick Measure is the one practical use. The app is a lot like Apple’s more simply titled Measure. Fire it up, move the camera around to get a lay of the land and it will measure nearby objects for you. An interesting showcase for AR potential? Sure. Earth shattering? Naw. It also seems to be a bit of a battery drain, sucking up the last few bits of juice as I was running it down.

3D Scanner, on the other hand, got by far the biggest applause line of the Note event. And, indeed, it’s impressive. In the stage demo, a Samsung employee scanned a stuffed pink beaver (I’m not making this up), created a 3D image and animated it using an associate’ movements. Practical? Not really. Cool? Definitely.

It was, however, not available at press time. Hopefully it proves to be more than vaporware, especially if that demo helped push some viewers over to the 10+. Without it, there’s just not a lot of use for the depth camera at the moment.

There’s also AR Doodle, which fills a similar spot as much of the company’s AR offerings. It’s kind of fun, but again, not particularly useful. You’ll likely end up playing with it for a few minutes and forget about it entirely. Such is life.

The feature is built into the camera app, using depth sensing to orient live drawings. With the stylus you can draw in space or doodle on people’s faces. It’s neat, the AR works okay and I was bored with it in about three minutes. Like Quick Measure, the feature is as much a proof of concept as anything. But that’s always been a part of Samsung’s kitchen-sink approach — some combination of useful and silly.

That said, points to Samsung for continuing to de-creepify AR Emojis. Those have moved firmly away from the uncanny valley into something more cartoony/adorable. Less ironic usage will surely follow.

Asked about the key differences between the S and Note lines, Samsung’s response was simple: the S Pen. Otherwise, the lines are relatively interchangeable.

Samsung’s return of the stylus didn’t catch on for handsets quite like the phablet form factor. They’ve made a pretty significant comeback for tablets, but the Note remains fairly singular when it comes to the S Pen. I’ve never been a big user myself, but those who like it swear by it. It’s one of those things like the ThinkPad pointing stick or BlackBerry scroll wheel.

Like the phone itself, the peripheral has been streamlined with a unibody design. Samsung also continues to add capabilities. It can be used to control music, advance slideshows and snap photos. None of that is likely to convince S Pen skeptics (I prefer using the buttons on the included headphones for music control, for example), but more versatility is generally a good thing.

If anything is going to convince people to pick up the S Pen this time out, it’s the improved handwriting recognition. That’s pretty impressive. It was even able to decipher my awful chicken scratch.

You get the same sort of bleeding-edge specs here you’ve come to expect from Samsung’s flagships. The 10+ gets you a baseline 256GB of storage (upgradable to 512), coupled with a beefy 12GB of RAM (the regular Note is a still good 8GB/256GB). The 5G version sports the same numbers and battery (likely making its total life a bit shorter per charge). That’s a shift from the S10, whose 5G version was specced out like crazy. Likely Samsung is bracing for 5G to become less of a novelty in the next year or so.

The new Note also benefits from other recent additions, like the in-display fingerprint reader and wireless power sharing. Both are nice additions, but neither is likely enough to warrant an immediate upgrade.

Once again, that’s not an indictment of Samsung, so much as a reflection of where we are in the life cycle of a mature smartphone industry. The Note 10+ is another good addition to one of the leading smartphone lines. It succeeds as both a productivity device (thanks to additions like DeX and added cross-platform functionality with Windows 10) and an everyday handset.

There’s not enough on-board to really recommend an upgrade from the Note 8 or 9 — especially at that $1,099 price. People are holding onto their devices for longer, and for good reason (as detailed above). But if you need a new phone, are looking for something big and flashy and are willing to splurge, the Note continues to be the one to beat.

Bixby can now be quickly accessed by holding down the power button. Handily, Samsung still lets you reassign the function there, if you really want Bixby out of your life. You can also hold down to get the power off menu or double press to launch Bixby or a third-party app (I opted for Spotify, probably my most used these days), though not a different assistant.

Imaging, meanwhile, is something Samsung’s been doing for a long time. The past several generations of S and Note devices have had great camera systems, and it continues to be the main point of improvement. It’s also one of few points of distinction between the 10 and 10+, aside from size.

The Note 10+ has four, count ’em, four rear-facing cameras. They are as follows:

Ultra Wide: 16 megapixel

Wide: 12 megapixel

Telephoto: 12 megapixel

DepthVision

That last one is only on the plus. It’s comprised of two little circles to the right of the primary camera array and just below the flash. We’ll get to that in a second.

The main camera array continues to be one of the best in mobile. The inclusion of telephoto and ultra-wide lenses allow for a wide range of different shots, and the hardware coupled with machine learning makes it a lot more difficult to take a bad photo (though believe me, it’s still possible).

The live focus feature (Portrait mode, essentially) comes to video, with four different filters, including Color Point, which makes everything but the subject black and white.

Samsung’s also brought a very simple video editor into the mix here, which is nice on the fly. You can edit the length of clips, splice in other clips, add subtitles and captions and add filters and music. It’s pretty beefy for something baked directly into the camera app, and one of the better uses I’ve found for the S Pen.

Ditto for the improved Super Steady offering, which smooths out shaky video, including Hyperlapse mode, where handshakes are a big issue. It works well, but you do lose access to other features, including zoom. For that reason, it’s off by default and should be used relatively sparingly.

Zoom-on Mic is a clever addition, as well. While shooting video, pinch-zooming on something will amplify the noise from that area. I’ve been playing around with it in this cafe. It’s interesting, but less than perfect.

Zooming into something doesn’t exactly cancel out ambient noise from outside of the frame. Everything still gets amplified in the process and, like digital picture zoom, a lot of noise gets added in the process. Those hoping for a kind of spy microphone, I’m sorry/happy to report that this definitely is not that.

The DepthVision Camera is also pretty limited as I write this. If anything, it’s Samsung’s attempt to brace for a future when things like augmented reality will (theoretically) play a much larger role in our mobile computing. In a conversation I had with the company ahead of launch, they suggested that a lot of the camera’s AR functions will fall in the hands of developers.

For now, Quick Measure is the one practical use. The app is a lot like Apple’s more simply titled Measure. Fire it up, move the camera around to get a lay of the land and it will measure nearby objects for you. An interesting showcase for AR potential? Sure. Earth shattering? Naw. It also seems to be a bit of a battery drain, sucking up the last few bits of juice as I was running it down.

3D Scanner, on the other hand, got by far the biggest applause line of the Note event. And, indeed, it’s impressive. In the stage demo, a Samsung employee scanned a stuffed pink beaver (I’m not making this up), created a 3D image and animated it using an associate’ movements. Practical? Not really. Cool? Definitely.

It was, however, not available at press time. Hopefully it proves to be more than vaporware, especially if that demo helped push some viewers over to the 10+. Without it, there’s just not a lot of use for the depth camera at the moment.

There’s also AR Doodle, which fills a similar spot as much of the company’s AR offerings. It’s kind of fun, but again, not particularly useful. You’ll likely end up playing with it for a few minutes and forget about it entirely. Such is life.

The feature is built into the camera app, using depth sensing to orient live drawings. With the stylus you can draw in space or doodle on people’s faces. It’s neat, the AR works okay and I was bored with it in about three minutes. Like Quick Measure, the feature is as much a proof of concept as anything. But that’s always been a part of Samsung’s kitchen-sink approach — some combination of useful and silly.

That said, points to Samsung for continuing to de-creepify AR Emojis. Those have moved firmly away from the uncanny valley into something more cartoony/adorable. Less ironic usage will surely follow.

Asked about the key differences between the S and Note lines, Samsung’s response was simple: the S Pen. Otherwise, the lines are relatively interchangeable.

Samsung’s return of the stylus didn’t catch on for handsets quite like the phablet form factor. They’ve made a pretty significant comeback for tablets, but the Note remains fairly singular when it comes to the S Pen. I’ve never been a big user myself, but those who like it swear by it. It’s one of those things like the ThinkPad pointing stick or BlackBerry scroll wheel.

Like the phone itself, the peripheral has been streamlined with a unibody design. Samsung also continues to add capabilities. It can be used to control music, advance slideshows and snap photos. None of that is likely to convince S Pen skeptics (I prefer using the buttons on the included headphones for music control, for example), but more versatility is generally a good thing.

If anything is going to convince people to pick up the S Pen this time out, it’s the improved handwriting recognition. That’s pretty impressive. It was even able to decipher my awful chicken scratch.

You get the same sort of bleeding-edge specs here you’ve come to expect from Samsung’s flagships. The 10+ gets you a baseline 256GB of storage (upgradable to 512), coupled with a beefy 12GB of RAM (the regular Note is a still good 8GB/256GB). The 5G version sports the same numbers and battery (likely making its total life a bit shorter per charge). That’s a shift from the S10, whose 5G version was specced out like crazy. Likely Samsung is bracing for 5G to become less of a novelty in the next year or so.

The new Note also benefits from other recent additions, like the in-display fingerprint reader and wireless power sharing. Both are nice additions, but neither is likely enough to warrant an immediate upgrade.

Once again, that’s not an indictment of Samsung, so much as a reflection of where we are in the life cycle of a mature smartphone industry. The Note 10+ is another good addition to one of the leading smartphone lines. It succeeds as both a productivity device (thanks to additions like DeX and added cross-platform functionality with Windows 10) and an everyday handset.

There’s not enough on-board to really recommend an upgrade from the Note 8 or 9 — especially at that $1,099 price. People are holding onto their devices for longer, and for good reason (as detailed above). But if you need a new phone, are looking for something big and flashy and are willing to splurge, the Note continues to be the one to beat.
