I don’t know that I said that exactly but we definitely talked about good and evil and how there is no true balance between them and the danger of pursuing pleasure over everything and hypocrisy and truth and the overall destructive and all-consuming quality of evil haha!!

I teach in a Charter school not a public school and so I am allowed to talk about all these things! I’m really grateful for that. I couldn’t teach English in an American public school in this climate. I would die. The place where i’m at is very protective of their teachers’ freedom to speak openly and bluntly, within the realms of decency of course. But still. And I couldn’t teach somewhere that didn’t give me that kind of space. (My student teaching experience did not give me that kind of space. I was basically pre-told what I could say on an ideological level or the assumptions about what I could and couldn’t say were so strong that I couldn’t go against it even though I often disagreed with the baseline of the discourse. I hated it profoundly.)

#asks #anon #I love teaching 8th grade because they’re JUST over the ‘everything is a joke’ phase of 7th grade #but they’re not yet into the full contrariness of 10th grade #so they can engage with me on ideas on an intellectual level #with a simplicity and clear-headedness that IS conditioned out of them by society #like I’m not saying 8th graders are inherently profound #but they’ve still accepted some basic truths as true #evil is destructive #guilt is real #you can’t run from your problems and tbh we have amazing discussions #I’m leading them #but they CAN be lead
