I'm trying to count how many times Hiccup is captured/kidnapped throughout both series, the movies and the short films, so here's my criteria:

Any time he is unwillingly moved from one location to another by a dragon, viking or other character.

This includes any dragons picking him up and flying off somewhere, even if he is okay with it later.

This does not include when Toothless/his friends drag him off to show him something.

Any situation that prompted the dragon riders to rescue him.

Any plans that involved him giving himself up or joining up with a villain/antagonist.

This does not include the time he and Dagur were trapped on that island together.

Any time he is tied up and led somewhere or locked up/held in place with a guard.

Here is the list of situations I have compiled in (hopefully) chronological order:

HTTYD

Congratulations, no captures or kidnappings.

GIFT OF THE NIGHT FURY

When Meatlug (accidentally) brings Hiccup along to the Rookery.

RIDERS OF BERK

S1E6 - Hiccup gets taken to Dragon Island.

S1E16 - Hiccup is captured by the Outcasts on their island.

S1E19 - Alvin Captures Hiccup and Toothless at the "Isle of Night".

DEFENDERS OF BERK

S1E20 - Hiccup gives himself up to Dagur as part of his plan with Alvin.

RACE TO THE EDGE

S1E1 - the Dragon Riders get captured by Daugr on a hunter ship.

S1E7 -The twins put him in prison (this one's just here because I think it's funny).

S2E6 - The Dragon Hunters capture him.

S2E11 - The Dragon Riders get captured trying to save the Skrill.

S3E1 - Hiccup is captured by Dragon Hunters while trapped on an island with Dagur.

S3E8 - Hiccup and Toothless get caught in a Dragon Hunter Trap and are kidnapped and forced to participate in dragon fights.

S3E12 - Viggo captures all the Dragon Riders at the auction.

S3E13 - The Defenders of the Wing capture the Dragon Riders.

S4E3 - First Hiccup is caught by Amos and Berthel.

S4E3 - Then he's caught by Savage.

S4E3 - Then Krogan gets him after Throk saves him.

S4E3 - Ryker captures him for the tiniest bit right before the riders arrive.

S4E10 - Hiccup is caught with Ruffnut when he tries to rescue her from Viggo's trap. Unlike the other traps, he needs the other dragon riders to rescue them.

S5E2 - The Sandbuster captures Hiccup and Snotlout.

S6E8 - Viggo hands Hiccup over to Krogan as part of their plan.

HTTYD 2

Valka kidnaps Hiccup and Toothless.

HTTYD 3

Grimmel captures the dragon riders.

HOMECOMING

Once again, no captures of kidnappings

Up For Debate:

There are a few situations which technically fit the criteria, but I'm not sure if they fit considering the context of the show:

S5E5 - the riders are stuck on Vanaheim, guarded by the Sentinels. (Rtte)

S1E3 - This is a technicality, but when Hiccup joins up with Dagur to keep him away from the other dragons. (Dob)

EDIT: I forgot that even though my criteria says that the time Dagur and Hiccup are trapped on that island together (S3E1 of RTTE) doesn't count, because he is joining up with an (at the time) antagonist, there is a moment when Hiccup is captured by Dragon Hunters near the end of the episode.

After careful discussion (aka me ranting at my roommate) S4E10 of RTTE is also moving from "up for debate" to the official list. These changes are reflected above.

This brings our official count to 22 captures/kidnappings!

Honestly, the hardest part about this was finding the distinction between being captured or being trapped and what I wanted to count. When Hiccup isn't captured, he spends a lot of time in traps.

His overall vibe is super cool and I really enjoyed that episode where he and Viggo were looking for ways to kill each other. His design is awesome

One thing I love is listening to httyd eps while imaging different AUs and cause I’m bored, can’t go to my room rn (and found half of this sitting in my drafts from last month lol), I’ve decided to pass the time sharing one.

It’s from the latter part of Midnight Scrum (going from when Hiccup gets taken) and it’s a royalty AU (which I’ve seen a lot of floating around here recently too)

It’s the standard ‘Kidnapped Bride’ plot line, with King Viggo wanting Prince Hiccup. He puts the bounty on Hiccup to bring him in.

- Amos and Berthel are still bounty hunters but they are a bit more threatening and less silly, most of their sillier lines I ignore and imagine them said in a more threatening way. They still retain their gay energy though.

- Savage was originally one of Viggo’s servants and when Hiccup was first held captive, he was there to guard Hiccup’s cell. He was slightly kinder to Hiccup in that situation but then when Hiccup escapes, he gets blamed and exiled. That makes his whole motivation to get Hiccup to Viggo being to get back into Viggo’s good graces. Hiccup doesn’t trust him either way cause even if he was kinder then other guards, he still wasn’t kind. He does hold hope that he can reason with him originally though (because Hiccup knows he knows what Viggo is like) but Savage is very blinded by his goals.

- Throk is a well known assassin but gets hired by Mala a lot (and their relationship, I picture it platonically but romantically also works, grows over time until he becomes her personal assassin. At this time though he could be hired by anyone). The Defenders of the Wing are also another kingdom but there isn’t a war against Dragons and they hold no real allegiance to Berk and aren’t actual enemies to Viggo either. They are a neutral party but Mala does prefer Hiccup (but she’s not forthcoming about it) and thinks Viggo is cruel, so decided to help him by hiring her favourite assassin.

- Krogan is also an assassin/bounty Hunter (He and Throk have competed a lot in the past). He has no ties to Drago and was more Viggo’s personal assassin (and lover) before they had a fight. He decided to get Hiccup to see Viggo again and remind him of his skills in a threatening way. It’s a mixed message of ‘remember how much you need me’, a ‘here’s you new lover, I’m stronger then him (thus being more on you’re level, and I could kill him easily if I wanted)’ and a ‘dont forget how dangerous I can be to you and your goals’ type thing.

Some lines I’ve decided to alter slightly:

Berthel: What's that? Dragons? -> Berthel: What's that? / Amos: His friends. (Since they already knew of the dragons)

Hiccup: Viggo will never respect you. He's playing you for a fool. -> Hiccup: You know Viggo will never respect you. Please. He's always played you for a fool.

Savage: I don't know what they're gonna do to Hiccup. It's his own fault he got grabbed, not mine. -> Savage: I don't know where they’re gonna take Hiccup. It's his own fault Viggo sees him as a whore, not mine.

Hiccup has a rough material built into his chest plate capable of creating sparks when striked against and uses that and a stone to light a stick on fire rather then the dragon blade. (Kinda a little hint of magic because I said so)

Ryker: Oh, I'd love to drop you, but Viggo wants to kill you himself. -> Oh, I'd love to drop you, but Viggo wants you for himself.

A começar por meus surtos em relação a HTTYD agora que estou revendo tudo:

• odeio o Johann com todas as minhas forças, eu tinha esquecido do quão desgraçado esse cara é. E muito baixo, também.

• eu amo o Soluço, mas a ingenuidade dele me irrita às vezes. Ele deveria ser chamado de "Soluço, o Pacificador". Combina com tudo isso de sempre querer a paz a cima de tudo e achar genuinamente que algumas pessoas podem mudar ou melhorar.

• Cabeça-Dura é o melhor. Eu só queria um ponto para dizer que amo ele.

• tive um ataque cada vez que Soluço, Dagur e Heather se chamaram de irmãos. E eu amo o Dagur de RTTE, foi um bom arco de rendição para ele.

• Hiccstrid ainda é um dos meus OTPs. Eles são fofos juntos, mas eu queria ter mais momentos entre eles.

• queria mais eps para RTTE. Sei lá, o arco fechou da forma certa e fez ponte direta com o 2° filme, mas ainda acho que tinham outras coisas a serem exploradas. Queria saber mais sobre a vida da Valka e talvez mais coisas sobre Drago, talvez.

Ainda faltam os dois últimos filmes que eu tô enrolando pra ver, mas no geral é isso.

Thinking about how Midnight Scrum took place after Viggo stole all their gold when Hiccup pretty much gave it to him on a silver platter, about how Hiccup was kidnapped in the rare few minutes he was without Toothless and on his way home for the Great Hall, and about Amos and the other guy not exactly being the smartest of bounty hunters.

Like, okay, it is very much implied that they hit Hiccup unconscious, but still wondering how these two even managed to get Hiccup off Berk.

Like yeah, it was night and there were probably a lot of off-island visitors to celebrate Berk’s 400th, but it’s also fun to think about the possibility that they might’ve had inside help.

Berk obviously adores Hiccup at this point. They don’t show it much in RttE, (they don’t show much of Berk in general in RttE) besides Hiccup being called a hero by Fishlegs in episode 1 and the kids fawning over him (I think?), but they definitely do in Httyd 2.

Hiccup returns from meeting Eret and he’s met with people cheering upon his arrival. When he returns again to defeat Drago, he’s once again met with cheers. And when he becomes Chief, people cheer again. That’s three different times that people have cheered for Hiccup Haddock the Third, their hero and heir.

So I guess it wouldn’t be as plausible for Hiccup’s kidnapping to have partially been an inside job, but it’s still a fun whump to think about. Could be cause for some paranoia whump.

Something that I have found very interesting since first rewatching Httyd 2 back in 2017 is that Hiccup has become this symbol of hope and security to the other Dragon Riders and even to Berk after the events of Httyd 1. (And the tv-shows.)

Astrid mentions him to Drago as if he's someone to be feared, someone who WILL defeat him. It's something Hiccup actually ends up doing too. Despite Drago's opinion on his appearance, Hiccup ended up being a threat Drago should've been wary off.

That one man from Berk shouts "Look! It's Hiccup!" and Berk cheers when he returns after Berk has learned that they've lost their Chief, but not his son.

And even in RttE you have these moments in which the Thorston twins are actually genuinely shocked when Hiccup doesn't immediately know the answer to a problem and even Snotlout mentions "Don't even try. He's always right, so there's really no point." when Amos (I think???) tries to argue with Hiccup's plan to escape the Sandbuster.

I have no reason for this post. It's just that... after the way Hiccup was treated and seen as in Httyd 1, it just keeps baffling me how he, three to five years later, is seen as Berk's hope. (And Stoick's pride.)

Midnight Scrum was surprisingly entertaining...

1. Hiccup was pretty much passed around like a hot potato this whole episode.

2. Soft-Spoken Sam stole my heart with one word. Berthel came in second. He had one job.

3. But how he and Amos manage to snatch Hiccup right out from under Toothless’s nose?! That dragon’s no slacker when it comes to protecting his boy.

4. Did that moron seriously try to jump overboard while he was tied up?! Really, Hiccup?! Really?!

5. STOICK AND TOOTHLESS WORKING TOGETHER TO RESCUE HICCUP IS EVERYTHING I WANT IN LIFE.
