How's everyone's Tuesday going? I'm currently writing this post in my tv room with my best friend E! Let me set the scene for you, I'm eating Scooby Snacks (an underrated yum) while having pretty little liars in the background. Then, a precious idea came into my head to start a new mini blog series ⪩⪨ *drum roll please* A four or five-part series guide to your favorite pll characters!! So make sure to comment your faves down below;) to start off, I decided to do Aria.

⋆୨୧ Aria's hair Is long brown, with loose waves. If you wanna achieve a similar look you could grow out your hair, dye it brown, or use a curling iron and give it some loose waves
⋆୨୧ Aria's normal makeup consists of smokey-toned eyeshadow, black eyeliner for the top, and skin color for the bottom * to make her eyes appear bigger * For her face she likes to use a little bit of a peach or pinky blush, for a cooler-toned look. For her lips, she'll either go for something nude or pink. Aria's eyebrows are very defined so I would suggest enhancing your amazingly beautiful brows and helping to define them further by embracing your natural brow line, plucking, waxing, and, threading if you want to and need to. If you feel like it, you can fill in sparse spaces with a brow pencil. Aria's nails are usually painted a dark color like red, black, royal blues, burgundies, and maroon.
⋆୨୧ Aria's favorite form of exercise is yoga. So you could try looking up a yoga class on youtube or if you're up for it try out an in-person class! I highly recommend giving yoga a shot, like Aria it's one of my fav forms of exercise. It's so good for your mind and body ♡
⋆୨୧ get in cuties we're going shopping! (all credit goes to mean girls) Aria's style is so unique to her and is a mix of a few specific styles, bohemian, indie, and a little Bella Swan at times. Aria has her classic gray bomber jacket so I suggest getting a signature jacket of your own. She also loves second-hand shopping and thrifting! lastly, be bold and wear your clothes with confidence! come on strut your stuff♡

Your tags under the pokemon poll are SO TRUEE and it hurts how many people dont understand that
I grew up in the change from pixel art to 3D and have nostalgia for bw, xy AND sm. So i think because of that, I can see the good and bad in all the games but don't feel like any of them 'peaked''. They're all different games, so they are really hard to compare.
On a related note tho, its so sad to see so many fans praise one of my childhood games and not the others. And like, I get it because gen 5 is more similar to what they grew up with.....but every time I say I love xy, sm and even swsh i get told they are terrible and usually imply that I shouldnt like them :/
That only happens online, though......irl all the fans ive met, no matter their ages, just say something like 'i didnt like it, but i'm glad you did!'. Growing up in irl fan spaces and having to move online during corona was AN EXPERIENCE omg

There's usually a pattern you can notice with this stuff too. There are two lines that go up as time goes on. The one everyone talks about as being great and the newer one people hate on, usually to do with nostalgia of the now older original audience of the game.

My first Pokemon game was Colosseum, so gen 2/3 pokemon and gen 3 sound effects are pretty nostalgic to me.
Then I grew up mostly playing Diamond/Platinum/PMD2/Ranger2. I LOVED Team Galactic. I restarted the games so many times just so I could play through the story again with Cyrus and the Galactic Grunt theme. (I have also played through pmd2 many many times). I remember in my early teens seeing people on the internet hating on DPPt a lot and it making me sad. I recall someone saying that the gen 4 Pokemon sucked and I remember thinking "aw I guess they're right, some of these pokemon are really boring or annoying" and then I learned later that the pokemon I was thinking of were all gen 1 pokemon sdfkjsh
Gen 5 was hated when it first came out because it wasn't very fun for new players. I bet it also didn't help that the advertising for B2W2 was pretty poor and also came out after the 3DS did. I didn't even know it was a sequel until years later. That's why they went in the complete opposite direction for gen 6, and added gimmicks!
I have heard multiple people call the designs from gen 5 horrible over the years (And they're all wrong). Those comments are nowhere NEAR as frequent now, but they almost always come from people with nostalgia for the ones they grew up with.
I was 13 when BW first came out. I think I've only beaten it once, MAYBE twice. I'm not entirely sure why, because I was still replaying DPPt a lot. I would guess it's because the game is super linear in terms of gameplay and every playthrough will start exactly the same. You don't really get to make decisions on your team and how you play until later. Kid me loved the beginning of the main pokemon games the most because they were the most fun bits to play usually. So I suppose when you've already played it once, the beginning becomes quite boring.
And to compare. I did not like XY when it first came out. I was 16 and very against change and also my fav types at the time were dark and dragon so fairy type was the worst thing ever. I said previously that I really liked Team Galactic, so Team Flare was just a bootleg version of them to me. BUT I did immediately replay the game when I finished it. The character customisation plus the huge dex gives the game a lot of replayability. Because while I didn't like a lot about the game it was still fun to play, and it was the first time online was really accessible to me. I went back to 2013/2014 on my blog and there's SO much positivity about the game it's amazing! Over time people only remembered the bad parts and started hating it. I bet there'll be an influx of nostalgia for it before long. We can even see it in the hope people have for SV having Kalos DLC.
I need to replay sun/moon or play USUM because in my brain currently it sucks. But I'm very aware that that's because I only played it once, it's been years, and I played it when I started to grow out of Pokemon. So I'm excited to play it again now that I can appreciate it better. (Also the Sun/Moon anime is my fav so I have a lot of love for the characters now)
And finally, I loved SWSH! I didn't finish it the first time I tried to play it. Mostly because I spent HOURS trying to get a shiny hatenna before doing the fire gym skdfjhs. But then I SPED through the game with a bug type only run before Legends came out and I really enjoyed the story! One of those things that's more enjoyable if you're only focused on enjoying the story (and playing the game through with a joltik as the lead and trying to make sure they stay strong enough to beat the game with pfft) Also Leon was the first ever Champion I actually thought was cool and enjoyed seeing while playing the game (as ridiculous as his outfit is)
If I were to logically plot out the best for me based on how nostalgia works and taking into consideration that public opinion ABSOLUTELY influences me. I would have said BW was the best and XY(or SM) was the downfall, even though I had way more fun playing XY than BW as a kid

How long did it take you to write this fic?
I think it probably took me about two or three months on/off. I was having a hard time materializing what having relations with not one but two warring gods would look like so I was working through that for quite a bit.
7. What inspired the idea for the plot?
My fav way to write fics is to think of "what ifs" scenarios whether that be a full AU, a bit of canon divergence, bad endings - putting those lil guys into various scenarios, pretty much. This one started off with trying to determine what a relationship between god gale and dark justiciar shadowheart would look like. Obviously Shar would not be willing to let her ascend (nor do I think would she seeing anything other than Shar) but what if Shar wanted some of the Galerian Weave as her own? And then it spawned from there.
8. What inspired the title for this fic? Is that usually how you choose titles?
God titles are always the worst! Ended up searching through my fic until I found a phrase I thought was pretty and decided to use that. Sometimes I use this method, others I use song titles/lyrics, others I'm like "what is a vague enough phrase or sentence that fits this fic that would sound nice" lol. Totally random which I choose.
18. How would you describe your writing style for this fic, if you can?
Very experimental with the use of stories and word of mouth to describe some of the scenes, and trying to really make it ambiguous in that way. Also very fairy-tale-esque. I tried to weave a soft gauze over the whole thing, like once upon a time there was a chosen who in the mornings saw her lover, and in the evenings forgot everything about him.
19. Is this one of your personal favorite fics? Why or why not?
Honestly, not really! I really enjoyed experimenting with it but I think it was so hard to ground that I'm not super happy with it, and I like some of my other works of gale/shadowheart more. But I still like the vibe it has going, and what I was trying to do with it :)

Well this one I pulled from the uh, subject matter quite heavily. Like I mentioned in the prev blog it was a combination of pulling from some of Gale's lines throughout it (being in awe at, yknow, filling Shadowheart so much, and also feeling so full of her) and making it a nice lil phrase that sounded nice as the title.
12. Was there a scene you wished you could have included? Why didn't it fit in?
Hmm that's a great question and I'm not too sure! I'm happy with everything I included. Maybe a bit more fuckin, or maybe a bit more of a discussion afterwards. I could see Gale still feeling insecure wrt satisfying Shadowheart, if she would be alright being with him, if she would still want to look for other partners, and her discussing it with him. IMO Shadowheart is just happy to have three of her loving partner in her and has no other complaints.
26. Wild Card! I'll tell you a fun fact about this fic!
In trying to figure out the logistics of the uh positions in the fic, I searched double penetration positions and the first website that popped up was a very informational and helpful swingers website!! shoutout to that website for helping me with this fic lol!

1. Favorite whump trope(s)?
Okay so right now the things eating my brain alive are hypothermia, self-sacrifice, and like...the moment someone finds the whumpee, if that makes sense? I love a good Finding And Realization from a rescuer.
2. Least favorite whump trope(s)?
Reallyyyyy really not a fan of pet whump, for many reasons. I have my own story that features it, but that's because I know where I'm going with it and can avoid all the stuff I hate about it. Also betrayal? I dunno, I've been betrayed enough IRL, it just makes me too sad. :(
3. Top 3 whump scenes and why?
OKAY SO. Hear me out. I'll do my best to avoid spoilers!
The main ending of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Time/Space/Sky. They're just so sad and heart-wrenching. You've just saved the world and you know that you're about to disappear from existence and leave your very best friend behind, who thinks that all the danger is past. You accepted this mission knowing it would be your very last adventure, ever, but they have no clue. As you two are walking back to the Pokemon who will ferry you back to all your other friends and family and the life you've built together, you start to disappear. And your best friend turns around and notices. There's way more to the ending that twists that knife deeper, and that's ALL stuff you know will absolutely be happening as you choose to play that mission, but it's so well written and it's worth playing through the game to get to experience the whole thing yourself. It still hits pretty hard even if you go in knowing, I'll be honest.
In His Dark Materials, there is an arc where the two main characters go through a HORRIFICALLY scary gauntlet. I'm not going to say what that is because people I love need to watch the series with me, but at the very end, they escape. One character cuts through reality into a new dimension, and they step from this bleak hellscape into a beautiful, picturesque grassland at night. The stars are bright and plentiful, the wind is warm and soft, and both characters just collapse together in awe and exhaustion, not even able to find a suitable place to sleep because they haven't gotten any real rest since that gauntlet started. It was just very well described in the books, the prose was gorgeous, and I don't know how many times I reread that scene when I was little.
I also REALLY loved Kaworu's scene where he takes the destruction collar off of Shinji in the Evangelion Rebuild movies. I dunno, it's touching and sad, and the look of horror on Shinji's face when he sees the one person who's been so nice to him easily shoulder that burden is really good. There's just something about that sort of devotion to someone that kills me.

c:< Right now my mage and dragon duo, Mariano and Bastian, are taking up so much room in my brain, but I also love whumping my good sweet reaper Will and @that-one-thespian's and @brinkofdiscovery's characters. Collabs are just such favs!
5. Favorite fandom for whump (show, series, etc)?
Pokemon, and Arknights! Pokemon is fun to just do whatever in, because sure, send your ocs on the late adventures they never got to have as kids, it'll be a good mix of fun and whimsy and angst and pain. TONS of shit you can do in Pokemon AUs. And Arknights just has such an interesting, terrifying world to play in, and gives you an excuse to make your OCs have little animal ears and tails.
6. Do you prefer written or watchable whump?
Written! I like to reread the particularly tasty bits, it just feels right.
7. Do you also like hurt/comfort?

But for real, it's always been my fav genre of fic, and my fav scenes in anything are USUALLY hurt/comfort!
8. What do you think the difference between hurt/comfort and whump is?
I think h/c is the more widely known term, and whump is newer, but the biggest difference that I can think of is that whump doesn't always have comfort. Sort of a "not all rectangles are squares, but every square is a rectangle" scenario.
9. How would you explain whump to someone who’s not familiar with it?
Oh I've literally said "Okay, so you know the juicy bits in a story? Where someone gets hurt, or is in danger, or something bad happens? That's whump." Gets the vibe across, doesn't over-complicate it, and doesn't sound defensive.
10. Is there any old whump you particularly enjoy? (say, pre 2000?)
I mean I DO love Pokemon, and the first season was just FULL of good child-friendly angst and whump that almost always has a happy ending. I think "Snow Way Out" was my fav (and counts, it was released in the US in December of 1999) because Ash tried so hard to keep his team warm when they were trapped in a blizzard but then THEY decided to help keep HIM warm. Super cute scene, absolutely flipped a switch in my little five-year-old brain.
11. Why do you think you like whump?
My half-joking answer: It's because I didn't get enough attention and care shown to me when I was a child, so now it's my characters' problem.
My half serious answer: I dunno, it's fun! I've always been an "intense stories" sort of person, even when my friends and I were playing with stuffed animals and Barbies, so I haven't really thought too hard about it. I like horror too. maybe I'm just drawn to that sort of controlled intensity.
12. When did you realize you liked whump?
I learned the word at 22-ish, but like I said, Pokemon definitely flipped some switch in me when I was five!

Hmm, lately I've been really digging the prompts by @warmblanketwhump and @whumpster-dumpster! I don't really do gifsets or pics, because I like to browse in my downtime at work, but I can always appreciate more ideas. c:

Oh yeah, I'm of the mindset that if I don't make it weird, it won't feel weird to the people I tell. I'm not gonna show my boss or anything, but my BF and friends know. Plus, with how I explain it, it just feels like most people would see the draw, especially with how much I openly like horror.

I was so, so bored at work, and running out of things to look at, and I remembered seeing the term "whump" somewhere before. So I slapped it in the search bar and started poking around!
16. Any unusual mediums you like for whump (plays, music, vlogs, etc)?
Ooo music definitely, if I can find a good inspiring song for a character or piece I'm writing then I'm SUCH a happy camper.

I think that personally a lot of people would feel much more secure in their love of whump if they took a page from how furries handle things. Just...be a little harmlessly, unabashedly weird. It IS a little weird to be so fixated on fictional suffering, and that's FINE. Who cares! Just accept that everyone is a little weird and enjoy it!
There are some dangerous weirdos here, sure but like, that's just the internet babes, relax, there are worse things you can do than stab your friend's OC for the 20th time so that your OC can patch them up with intense homoerotic undertones.

If I HAVE to, this one just destroyed me when @that-one-thespian wrote it. I had dreams during the writing process where I'd get half awake from excitement because I dreamed that I'd gotten a notification for it. It's the second part in a little series we're collabing on, and I love seeing the team's whole dynamic in action! (Also Archer calling Mariano firecracker is just. Very cute. Very cute and powerful.)
Scott @friendlylocalwhumper is also just one of my fav writers too, and he doesn't delve into super graphic gore often BUT god I go feral when he does. This drabble is absolutely fantastic. Maxon is so scary, and Quinn is so sure of themself, and that can only lead to terrible terrible things. His prose is just nice to read! I devoured this one before bed the MOMENT it was written.
Also @brinkofdiscovery has FANTASTIC characters and imagery when he writes. It's been such a pleasure developing our lores together and seeing where we intersect and diverge with it all, but god I'm in love with how he describes his Death's domain in this piece. The red light, the salt, it's so good. Also Tyler is so fascinating as a character, I wanna study him under a microscope until he tries to kill about it.

I...cannot stand pet whumpees? And spineless whumpees. It's just something I can't do, I don't find them interesting and they just lose my attention really quickly. But that's why I don't really follow a lot of blogs who write those things!
22. Tropes you think we could use more of?
I want more bitey whumpees, give me whumpees who are just a little insane, a little batshit. I want them to go stupid and crazy and suffer the consequences after winning. I think that's what draws me to Mariano! He's so calm and even-keeled but also so, so willing to just throw himself into wildly dangerous scenarios and fight like he's going to die. He makes calculated risks, and is generally good at that math, but sometimes said math includes "will I need to burn myself alive to survive this?" and he just doesn't mention it.

Who are your fave morally gray, animated villains (can be from Dreamworks or any other companies)? I never kept up that much with Kung Fu Panda past the first movie, but it felt surreally exciting when I saw and heard Tai Lung in the newest film's trailer (he was the first film's villain). I got very nostalgic and remember he had a point in being mad that he got denied what he worked for, because he had "darkness in him" (that doesn't justify all he's done as a villain, but still).

I'll say the Diamonds from Steven Universe, though. They have a lot of personal growth to get through, and they're still on that journey, but that makes them so relatable and their struggle with it is pretty hilarious. A judgy person learning not to be judgy can be absolute gold comic relief. We're also fans of Jasper in this house. There's nothing wrong with wanting to be strong; Jasper just needs some lessons about what inner strength means and the overall strength that comes with self-control and restraint. Said another way, Jasper's a white belt. Everybody starts as a white belt. Steven Universe was a good show.
I'm gonna throw Doc Ock on this list because s/he's been animated several times and s/he's great. Most of the Spider-man villains are. They're rarely one-dimensional, which is what makes Marvel so good, but Ock in specific makes us feel for him, a lot like Conners, and the Spiderverse version clearly has a history with May and I want to know *all* about it.
Ursula (The Little Mermaid) in the movie is not morally gray, but in my heart she is. One day I might write the fic about it 😂
GASTON. He's clearly a villain in Beauty and the Beast but he's legit just doing what he thinks is right. He's a total idiot but great for a meme and therefore a fav.
MEGAMIND! He might be the palest on the grayscale but I love that. He subverts all villainous expectations and does it in such a clumsy and endearing way, how can you not love him?
Also Bog King from Strange Magic. His motives aren't wrong AND he gets to sing?? AND he gets the 'hero' in the end?? It's everything I wanted for Pitch 🤣 He also has a great design and great VA. We love us some Bog King.
And of course Pitch Black. Anyone who stumbles on our blog can see how much we love Pitch. 🖤🖤🖤

Paz will constantly reassure you and if your anxiety starts getting the better of you he will pull you away from everyone and whisper reassuring, comforting things to you and do whatever he can to help you feel better. Now Paz also has a darker sense a humor and I personally think that comes with being a mandalorian, so he will always chuckle at your jokes and will return it with one of his own because he strives to see you smile and laugh as much as he can make possible. Paz would find it cute that you are always chasing drama and loves to sit and listen to you recite all the drama to him and spill the tea lol. You say you don't have any talents, but Paz is always blown away at how many languages you can speak and how you continue to want to learn more. He also loves that that gives him an excuse to take you with him when he travels so that he can have his cute little translator with him at all times. Not to mention that he loves cuddling up with you in the tiny bed that he has on his ship, as well as other things.

Ok so I wanna say that the two of you some how meet and start a regular meet up at some random shady bar where the two of you will sit for hours passing back rumors and just drama that you have witnessed since the two of you talked last. This goes on for a while before one morning you wake up early to Fox slowly and carefully trying not to wake you up as he untangles himself from you and your bed. After that the two of you start meeting more regularly and usually at your home. Once the two of you really get close and even start a relationship Fox finally relaxes around you. Fox absolutely loves your dark jokes because it is something he doesn't get to hear often with protecting senators and the chancellor almost everyday. Fox has also always loved the way you dressed, whether it be in comfy clothes or your cute skirts, he doesn't care he just likes the idea of wearing something different everyday rather than just blacks and his armor. Fox also likes to play with your hair at any given chance, and he appreciates that you always have it down because it just means that he has easier access too in, especially in certain situations *wink wink*. Fox would be one to stand up for you in any situation, and he may be pretty emotionally stunted and can't quite get the words out most of the time but the second he knows he loves you he will bluntly tell you because he is a blunt man and will not beat around the bush when it comes to you.
How in the world could I ever be disappointed in being shipped with the best princess and general in the Star Wars galaxy?!?!

it is a fucking art form and took me forever to tell them apart.
There’s three sure fire ways to never forget (none of them involve looking at dicks but don’t let that stop you)
1. Stage position
2. Body Types & Personality
3. Instrument
for Stage positions, even though they do move around a lot, they have set places for them to normally stay in.
This is the floor plan for the shows. Rain does goes up and down the stairs.
For body types, it’s pretty simple
Aether is the bulkiest male ghoul, large arms and legs, broad shoulders, he also has a metal bracelet and rings on his hands. He jumps and plays around a bit.
Swiss is thin, but more built than Rain and Dewdrop, he is also a POC, so his skin is darker than the others, who are all European/White Westerners. Plays around in his space and with Aether/Dewdrop
Mountain is the tallest I believe, and a bit lanky, he also doesn’t wear shoes.
Rain is thin, but slightly larger than Dewdrop, broader shoulders, kinda shy? he plays around sometimes but not all the time.
Dewdrop is TINY and THIN. He also goes for it with the ghoul thing, he messes with the crowd he’s in front of and spits at them. STOMPS for attention because he demands people watch him do his solos.
Cumulus is the shorter, plumper female ghoul
Cirrus is the taller, curvy female ghoul
Pro tip for the ghoulettes: their names are types of clouds that fit to their body type, Cumulus clouds being plump and fluffy while Cirrus clouds being whispy long clouds.
For Instruments, it goes as follows:
Aether uses the black guitar and is the rhythm guitarist, He hangs is guitar low on his body (no doubt because of his music background)
Swiss is third guitar/ backing vocals, he also plays Papa Nihil during Miasma
Mountain is drums
Rain is the bassist
Dewdrop uses the white guitar and is the lead guitarist. His play style is pretty unique and is how he was identified by fans.
Cumulus is keys, backing vocals
Cirrus is keys, backing vocals and Keytar
I still can get Rain and Dewdrop mixed up, because they are the same height and similar build, and their guitars are both white, you can normally see who is who because rain has broader shoulders than dewdrop, but you can also tell by knowing the differences in their instruments (which I find easier to do in photos and grainy gifs)
Rain uses a fender jaguar bass, it has a light brown neck and a pale headstock, as well as it clearly only having 4 strings and silver tuners on one side of the head. The pointy side of the body faces UP
(I couldn’t find his model with the white finish but it’s this model)
Dewdrop uses a Hagstrom Fantoman, which is Ghost’s guitar they made with the company Hagstorm. It has a very dark down neck, a small black headstock with 6 sliver tuners, 3 on each side. The pointy side of the body faces DOWN but also has another lower point that faces UP

for pre copia ghouls, I only really know Omega and Alpha, they both had their symbols on their guitars, Omega wore thick rings on his hands and Alpha had a broken heart tattoo on the sides of his hands. Omega also STOMPED on stage a lot.

1/8 I really wanted to ask you a question, anonymous because I don't have an account, and anons are off on your main blog so I'm asking on this one! There are no spoilers in this, I promise you. KoA is coming out very very soon, and that means I'll have to do a reread of Tower of Dawn, my favourite in the series. How should I read it? ToD is my favourite because I really love the new characters and worldbuilding. But the main reason is because of Chaol. This book meant a lot to me

2/8 because of his healing arc. I didn't even love Chaol that much before this book, though I never really thought he was that annoying. I did think his actions toward Aelin and Nesryn were crazy. But the thing I loved most about the book was the message to stop hating yourself for your mistakes, to forgive yourself, and get up when you fall. It was the Valg darkness that had injured him, wasn't it? And it was feeding off of his pain and regret.3/8He had to face all of it to finally be completely healed when Yrene realised that the Valg weren't just an enemy to fight against, they were something to be healed from. I think his insecurities and regrets, and his feeling that he was a failure, were also just like a parasite. That message that this darkness that doesn't let us go forward, that tells us we're not good enough, is like a parasite, and can literally and figuratively paralyse us, and we have to let go of it, really helped me.4/8 I think we all have those feelings in us sometimes, and they are the real enemy, just as much as the Valg are in this series. Tower of Dawn showed me how to fight them. When I first read the book, I was in a bad place and felt like I had failed everyone, and this book let me heal. Now I'm rereading this series and I'm back in a less-than-healthy place, and this year hasn't been that easy. But I've been thinking a lot about the characters—more specifically, Chaol.5/8 He became my favourite character in this book, but I've read so many reasons why I shouldn't like him, and many ways in which he's problematic. I don't condone all of his actions, but I never really read him as annoying. I can see where they're coming from, though. One of the most well-known metas on Chaol is the one about how ToD wasn't his redemption arc and he didn't really change, and mostly stayed the same idiot. I never really read the book to see him redeemed.6/8 I just liked the message of his healing. Heir of Fire is a very close second to ToD as my favourite, because of both Aelin and Manon's change of view. (Side note: Aelin went through so much in the series and triumphed, so it seemed a really crazy idea to put her in an iron coffin, and give her that feeling that she's failed everyone again. But I think it shows that the path to complete self-acceptance in anyone's journey is never linear. But I digress! Enough about my love for healing arcs.)7/8 The point is, there are many, many valid reasons to dislike Chaol, and so many of the things he's done—not just to Aelin and Nesryn, but throughout the whole series—are pretty stupid. But can't I like the good parts and learn from the bad parts, without condoning them? Are the people who like Chaol better at excusing problematic things or something? The reasons to hate him are all such good reasons, and I acknowledge them. I feel like I should probably start reading him that way too.8/8 I'm sorry for all the rambling in your asks, but my question is: should I do my reread looking for all the reasons why I shouldn't like him, or is it okay to read it my way? I am so sorry I only just saw this as I came back to tumblr today! My asks are back open on my main btw - or they are supposed to be. :) So I’m first going to say that we all take in books, movies, stories differently.
Sure over time some are deemed to be "less than great" while others triumph and are called the best books of a generation. (and I disagree with a few of those lol).
I like to listen to a lot of different point of views in the tumblr world. But I have learned that people will see what they want to see.
Read Tower of Dawn how YOU want to read it.
If Chaol is your fav that’s valid. Even if Maeve was your favourite - that’s Valid too. We can like characters without condoning what they do. We can like stories while knowing that they might contain controversial topics. I loved Tower of Dawn when I first read it. And I Loved it the second time as I read it simultaneously with Empire of Storms.
I'm sure I’m going to go off on a tangent so I apologise if I do.
But its important to read for your own enjoyment. Decide what you think. Decide what you like or don’t like. Its fine. Then if you decide you want more ideas and perspectives then look for them. But don't beat yourself up if you don’t completely agree.
And if your mind changes after a second read - that’s fine too. Opening ourselves to more experiences and stories is what makes us more accepting as a whole - I believe.
So I'm going to focus on your questions before I go on a meta Tangent.

I acknowledge the wrong things he's done, but does it make me a bad person to like him anyway? NO You are not a bad person Example. My grandfather cheated on my grandmother with another person. He was still my grandad. I still had a relationship with him. I use this story a bit. He did some dumb shit but it never made him a bad person. He did some worse shit to some other people which def could make him a bad person, but he was still my grandad and I loved him. He lived his life and made mistakes and spent a lot of his life trying to atone. WE ARE HUMAN. And I think it actually says a lot about SJM's storytelling abilities to make such complex characters. The older I get - the more I seem to forgive people for some things and condemn them for others. When I was 15 I told my uncle he was going to die if he kept smoking - I was blunt and brutal and didn’t care. Now I wouldn’t say that - but I also wouldn't let my kids be around him while he smokes and I would say that to him instead. He can do what he wants - i’m not there to police his choices. So I guess perspectives change, or how we go about enacting change changes. Anyway You are not a bad person. I am not a bad person.
Does liking problematic characters make me a bad person? um short answer - NOI really like Lorcan. A lot of people don’t and that’s fine. But he's my problematic character I'm stuck on hahaha
it all right if I didn't read his character as that annoying? Yes because we all make friends with different sorts of people.My best friend is not going to be your best friend. We cant all be the same. Different backgrounds and morals, beliefs etc are going to mesh together and we form friendships. So you can have your best friend and not need everyone else to love them too - the world doesn’t work like that. So loving a book character that other people don’t love is fine too.
I feel the conflictedness- (I just made that word up its now a word) but honestly. Do what you enjoy. Do what you want to do. Don’t let it get you down. Remember Dorian and Chaol are BFF's so he's gotta be the right best friend for someone and maybe you are just more like Dorian than other people are - ;) right! hahaha.
