There's a lot of fandoms I don't leave – World of Darkness and Warhammer 40k predominantly as settings I always have another angle I want to see explored in!

I do however have the Magic the Gathering bug, even though I haven't really played in years and years now – but card interaction as a generation for narrative has always kind of captivated me? Like there's a couple big mean Ogre cards that make Rats more dangerous, but due to the way the systems work they also empower the Ratfolk of Kamigawa, the Nezumi, as they count as 'Rat' cards still. So big Ogre spellcasters improving Rat people as part of a contained bit of narrative kind of fascinates me as a concept.

Plus each deck presupposes a Planeswalker character who's casting those spells – and I was always intrigued by that notion and so most of my OCs are representative of decks I played (or wanted to :P) and then in turn each Planeswalker needs a Plane to come from, probably from a still existing culture on that Plane too, and so it can kind of wonderfully reverberate inspiration.

Like how every VTM Kindred OC presupposes a Sire!

A novel! Cyberpunk Vampires! If we're mutuals you can come ask about this but I'm not ready to share things too publicly for this one yet, but the outlining has gone beautifully in my opinion, and the worldbuilding is singing.

I'm making a TTRPG!! It's a Powered by the Apocalypse engine game, about serving as the primary field agents of a faction of people who need your support and protection. Because if you're going to be a hero, who are you doing it for if not your kin?

Setting agnostic as hell, excluding some implicit need for magic in the class moves – I'm prepping to playtest this in sci-fi and fantasy settings to see how well my mechanics hold up in both swords and firearms based stories. Plus I'm going to explore a variety of perspectives of what the faction can be – from ethnic groups, to gangs, to guilds, to neighbourhoods.

I'm VERY excited about all this!!

"This corrosion" the sisters of mercy - nothing revolutionary here, its a goth (sorry eldritch) classic with the big stupid jim steinman bombast that i love. If you want a good time search "andrew eldritch interview" on youtube, he's a huge bitch its so funny

"My lady of mercy" the last dinner party - a cute fizzy indie pop song that splits open into huge, triumphant stoner rock choruses. Its my understanding this band has weathered "industry plant" rumors despite being like, not. Anyway if industry plants made shit like this id be ok w the concept

"Kybalion" killah priest - my friend sold this wu tang associate to me by saying a) he's into the occult, b) not sure if he's actually any good, c) hes making animal noises on the new album. "Hermes trismegestis of lyrics that specialize in physics and pyramids" literally what else do i have to tell you

"Blood makes noise" suzanne vega - i love when a singer songwriter chick has one hard track on her album and this one sounds urgent and clanging and ominous im having a great time

"You aint no celebrity" jungle - everybodys losing their shit over "back on 74," and rightfully so, but this is the ass shaker on the album, its like an update on all those 2000s sean paul hits i liked before i heard at too many bar mitzvahs (it actually knicks the buzzing theremin from "get busy," which was always better than "temperature")

"Naked eye" luscious jackson - 90s crunchy touchy feely divine feminine radical vulnerability nonsense

"Come together" primal scream - these guys were kind of narrowly revolutionary in the 90s and i dont hear anybody under 40 talk abt them ever but i loooove the early 90s uk "what if classic rock was dance" shit that was happening with them and i guess kind of madchester?

"Obsession" animotion - this is the loud obnoxious goofy 80s pop hit all the other ones want to be. The boy-girl vocals are really fun BONUS the singers fell in love and are still married, go look up a recent performance of this song theyre so old and so horny for each other i love it

"The big sky" kate bush + "chains of love" erasure - two very different 80s pop classics, but i listen to them the same way, and frequently right after each other. I have a theory of art and fiction i call, for the moment, "mythological awareness." I use this to refer to work that knows what old folkloric/mythological/archetypal symbols and narratives and images it evokes. Work that knows that any love story is every love story, every mad scientist is a wizard and a shaman and a hacker as well. Kate is singing about the things we pay attention to as children and forget as adults, the sky is a marvel its easy to forget about because its there every day, but that doeant mean its any less a marvel. This might be the most straightforward u2-ish rock single bush ever put out, but it feels like shes marching at the head of an army of zeppelins and airplanes and rockets powered by the laughter of gods. Andy bell of erasure is singing about a fictionalized pre-aids era of gay utopia like its something that used to be real and can be real again if we all clap our hands. He details a world of "sisters and brothers" open to the pleasures of the world, fucking and loving and worrying about what theyll do for dinner rather than whether they can get into the hospital to watch their loved ones die. And over an unstoppable synthesizer bounce, falsetto floating over clouds of gospel-inflected backing vocals, you believe him. He could be talking about atlantis or hobbitton or erewhon or the greek age of heroes and he knows that, the halcyon past is a myth none of us can get away from, maybe we need to understand it and use it rather than disavow it. I was born years after both of these songs hit, and my parents didnt listen to either of these artists, so they come to me fresh and bright and veiled in the light obscuring mist of morning, for me and no one else (everyone else)

Relationship status: Single.

Favorite color: If I really have to pin it down I usually go with cerulean blue, but really, my truest answer is a cop-out: I love all colors. I love colorful things, I love intense and garish mixes of colors, and I especially love anything vibrant. I also love different colors in different contexts, so (for example) my favorite color for a shirt won’t be the same as my favorite color for a car.

Song stuck in my head: Nothing currently, actually, but most recently it was “Temperature” by Sean Paul.

Last song listened to: UHHHHHHHH I don’t remember because it was something that came up on Pandora’s AutoPlay. The last song I purposefully selected was “Bronte” by Gotye.

We‘re doing a little remix on the programming here at The Renaissance for the next few weeks. Paul is out on injured reserve, so I (Juwan J. Holmes) am hopping in to bring you your regularly scheduled newsletter.

Today, May 2nd, has been declared Megan Thee Stallion Day in her hometown of Houston, Texas. Mayor Sylvester Turner issued the proclamation, and presented Megan with a key to the city at a ceremony held yesterday.

Later today, fashion’s premiere event — the Met Gala — is being held for the 38th time at the Metropolitan Museum of New York. This will be the first Met Gala held in May since 2019–2020’s was cancelled (pandemic) and 2021’s was held in September (just eight months ago — which is probably why it feels like it already happened.) This year’s theme, based on an exhibit of the same title, is “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” I can’t wait to see how badly that goes.

The Met Gala chair’s this year are Regina King (this would mark one of her first public appearances since her son’s death), Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Performers have not been formerly announced, but you can still expect a heavy crew of musicians to show up. Vogue’s livestream coverage, which is co-hosted by Vanessa Hudgens and La La Anthony, will start at 6pm EST.

In an interview on Twitch for Rolling Stone, Sean Paul liked comedian Jay Pharoah’s impression of him so much that he committed to signing the SNL alum. During the interview, Paul also shared what’s the right temperature for your girl and (once again) what he says at the beginning of the song.

The Rolling Stone Twitch also interviewed the rapper IDK last week, his first sit-down since announcing his upcoming KAYTRANADA-produced album, Simple. They broadcast on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 4pm EST at www.twitch.tv/rollingstone.

MUSIC RELEASES

This past week: Kehlani’s BLUE WATER ROAD and Future’s I Never Liked You came out. Additionally, Wale’s More About Nothing, the Seinfeld-inspired mixtape sequel to The Mixtape About Nothing (2008) and prequel to the album The Album About Nothing (2015), is now available on streaming services 12 years after its release. Amongst singles released: Tink and 2 Chainz have a single called “Cater” and Jvck James released the EP ON THE ROCKS featuring the song “Hennessy Tears.”

This upcoming week: there’s not a heavy amount of hip-hop drops as of now slated for the month of May, but IDK’s album Simple, YNW BSlime’s Goat and Jack Harlow’s album Come Home The Kids Miss You (further comment on the title withheld… for now) are set to come out on Friday, May 6. (Non-rap artists releasing music also include Simple Plan and Arcade Fire — this weekend’s musical guest for Saturday Night Live.) Before that, Lil Gotit’s album The Cheater, which leaked in January according to Genius.com, gets officially dropped on May 4 (may the four-ce of record sales be on his side.)

Later in the month, though: there will be plenty of new hip-hop for fans to ingest. Of course, Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers comes out May 13, as does Leikeli47’s album Shape Up and Dreezy & Hit-Boy’s Hit-Girl. Sean Paul’s new album Scorcha is slated for May 27, while Blackstar (the moniker for duo Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey) and Trippie Redd both have releases expected this month, according to HipHopDX.

Randomly, Rick Astley’s Whenever You Need Somebody (featuring the viral sensation “Never Gonna Give You Up”) is getting a remastered release this week too, in case you were wondering.

Here, we relay from a portion of an article written recently regarding hip hop.

This week, we’re relaying from Pitchfork staff writer & rap columnist Alphonse Pierre, and their column “Crypto Is the Most Uncool Thing You Could Possibly Rap About”:

The track, by Rich the Kid and Takeoff, is called “Crypto,” and it’s the most embarrassing rap song I’ve come across in a minute.

Just look at this chorus: “She want the info/I want to talk about crypto.” Is anyone even sure what that means?! Either it’s about Takeoff being so singularly business-minded that he just wants to talk to his girlfriend about investing, or it has absolutely no meaning and is the sort of line that will get him paid a shit ton of money to perform at an angel investor’s birthday party.

The next time you try your hand at flustering the giant is with something a little more... overt.

"Boring, eh?" The man sighs, then chuckles. "Whatever you say, missy."

God ok... this is gonna sound weird but I’m Going Slightly Mad by Queen is instant sleepytime juice for me, if only because the one time I’ve ever been to Europe it was for like, an education tour when I was 15, and I listened to Innuendo every time we were on the bus and used it as a little sort of lullaby whenever I needed to sleep. I would always catch the title track and then fall asleep after, so other than Innuendo itself I’m Going Slightly Mad is the only one I remember with any clarity.

3. A song that hypes you the fuck up

LMFAO Sono Chi no Sadame by Tommy Tominaga is an incredible hype song, even if I can only like parrot the words like a trained bird. It always lights a fire in my heart.

6. A song that’s on at least 3 of your playlists

Lmfao I’m gonna have to say Wayfaring Stranger by....lots of people !! I’m interpreting this question a little differently, considering Wayfaring Stranger is a bluegrass standard so lots of people have covered it, so different versions of it appear on lots of my playlists. I’m particularly fond of the Emmylou Harris version, though.
