I think my least favorite take, opinion, whatever you want to call it, is “why did Arknights not say the Inquisition was bad?”. It applies to any event, really, replace Inquisition with whatever the Authority Figure Organization is involved, and hell, I even agree with the sentiment sometimes, Arknights’ not flawless, but for the most part: You need to read better. You are playing the Game That Doesn’t Say Things Explicitly. It tends not to say things explicitly, turns out.
It kind of bugs me opening my inbox and seeing something to the effect of “I’m uncomfortable about Irene because she’s technically a cop, why is she not Condemned for it?” First of all, shame on your for wanting all of the art you peruse instantly moralized, to the point it needs to somehow involved a shovelful of The Opinion, served explicitly, at the drop of a hat. That aside, the Inquisition is not put on a good light to say the least, so even then the point is moot. Irene’s journey is very much seeing with her own eyes that “the Inquisition raised me, I respect and love the people I’ve met in it, as they do me, and the dogma surrounding the Inquisition is an important brick in the temple that is my life” necessarily is something that exists alongside “the Inquisition does in fact leave the imperiled to be doomed, and sees human life more as numbers and resources than human lives, the dogma is built, necessarily, on oppression of others as a means of fostering order and morale, and I’ve benefited directly from this privilege”, and that she has to make a decision. High Inquisitor Dario, her mentor and foster father, tells her as much: “Once you see things with your eyes, you have to make a decision”. Irene does in fact make her decision, leaving the Inquisition and the mentorship of The Highest Of Inquisitors, Saint Carmen himself, who was going to take her in and basically assure her a seat as a High Inquisitor in the future, because she found the latter realization to weight more than the former. In her own words, Irene decided to step away from this, because if she remained in the Inquisition, she’d only forever perpetuate the oppression on the Aegir, among other things.
Now, there’s definitely more to say about the Inquisition of Iberia, but I’m focusing on Irene here: Do you think it’d make sense for her to just suddenly have a moment of clarity, in the middle of all that fighting and struggling to stay alive, say “I’m antifa now, actually” and discard everything that has been her life until that moment just like that? If you do think so, I hope you don’t write anything soon. Your desire for catharsis is not unimportant, but the narrative shouldn’t have to accommodate for it in the most neckbreak way possible, and if you do need it to do that, then read something else, there are reads and games like that elsewhere (for example, Tales of the Abyss has the main character do an absolute 180 from one moment to another after a specific event in its story), but also do show some respect for the fact that Irene, in a way that resembles what anyone who just had her entire world view challenged not once, but twice (Under Tides and Stultifera Navis) would act, allows herself some time apart from the tension of the Big Happenings of the event, actually digest the paradigm shift, the loss of someone important to her, what to do with all the new information she has and what the experiences have taught her, and grow out from there organically.
What I’m trying to say is that I’d rather have less “conclusive” overdone neckbreak moments of “you know what? Fuck this! Fuck you!” and maybe let the characters in any given narrative seep and stew into what happened and what happens from there on. Take, for example, Full Metal Alchemist, in which certain important characters have a real moment of “Hey... Are we... The bad guys?” that shapes the events of an entire, important part of the story long term, slowly, with the gravitas it deserves.

Semi-coherent Thoughts on the Poppy War Series
Tumblr media
(Because I really need to start forcing myself to write semi-consistently again)
So I’ll say outright that I actually liked the series quite a bit, which does mean I actually got engaged and invested enough to start turning it over and picking it apart in my head after I finished it. So, like, this is probably going to come across as more negative overall than my actual opinions of the books.
Anyway, first off I really do adore Rin as a protagonist (I’d say ‘heroine’, but, well, no). Now partially this is because I always love even minimally sympathetic morally grey (..grey like coal soot, in this case) protagonists. But she’s just also such a complete garbage fire of a person, it’s kind of endearing. Well, that’s a bit callous – her entire personality is more or less a conflict between different kinds of unhealthy responses to powerlessness and trauma. Be she’s also just such a mess, and when she really starts leaning into delusions of grandeur you can’t help but root for her and hope things do actually turn out okay, regardless of how many fivers of blood she’s currently fantasizing about creating.
A big part of that is just how thoroughly awful the entire setting is, and how terrible everyone in it are, of course. Like, there are basically exactly three developed character in the entire trilogy who are unambiguously at least mostly good people (Chen, probably Venka, specifically the amnesiac and semi-delusional version of Jiang, but that’s being generous), and the fact that they stick around with Rin right to the end kind of puts that into doubt, honestly. Beyond that – almost every family has negligent or abusive parents, and literally every political figure is a bloody-handed tyrant ruling through violence and fear. The Hesperians are racist imperialists convinced they have a divine mandate to conquer the world, the Mugenese are every horror story from the IJA during WW2 translated to a pre-industrial fantasy setting, the ruling elite of Nikara are so many racist, scheming, power-hungry snakes with no concerns except their own position....
And, part and parcel with how terrible the setting is, Kuang does an incredible job of making all the worst things Rin does (until the final act, anyway) incredibly cathartic and badass and fun-in-a-fucked-up-way to read. There’s a terrible sort of awe while she turns the main islands of not!Japan into a pyroclastic hellscape. And whenever she gets a chance to enact any of her numerous revenges on some of the many people who abused and betrayed her it’s always poetic, in a Count-of-Monte-Cristo sort of way, and so kind of sickly compelling, even beyond it being some of the only times Rin’s really hopeful and happy. (Also, there are fun villainous monologues and quippy post-murder one-liners!)
Also, all forms of love are a terrible idea 100% of the time and is only going to end in at least one of the parties dead, abused, or (more or less literally) killing themselves in order to keep up with the other/earn their approval/try to keep them together. (I mean, Rin mostly had horrible taste in men, but Chen wasn’t able to stay mad at her for longer than a few months even after the whole ‘genocide’ thing, which he’s just about the only person to react to with any horror whatsoever. And look at how that ended up working out for him, so-)
I’m sure comparing grimdark fantasy to A Song of Ice And Fire is thoroughly out of fashion by now, but the overall perspective really did strike me as incredibly similar to Martin’s, a lot of the time. ‘Legitimate’ power and ‘lawful’ authority are ultimately nothing but polite fictions maintained by violence, terror and brutal oppression. War is a hell suffered most keenly by civilians with the misfortune to live and die in the middle of it, and least of all by the people with the power who actually start and end them. A flawed and unequal peace is very often preferable to dragging everything to hell with you as you die for the sake of freedom. And so on.
Now, to start the nitpicking – this is entirely personal and aesthetic, but it was kind of annoying how each of the first two books ended in moments of megalomaniac grandeur and terrifying empowerment, and then the next book started with a timeskip of things having gone to shit and her back under someone else’s thumb, and then a solid majority of the text is spent getting manipulated, betrayed, and finally crawling and clawing her way back out to the same point (both emotionally and in terms of independence/vision) that she had been at the previous book’s climax.
This isn’t anything even close to unique to TPW, of course – everything going to shit between the end of one story and the start of the sequel is kind of endemic to a lot of genres, really. And it is frankly incredibly in character for Rin to go through cycles flipping between resentment at being manipulated and used, and desperately craving authority figures to tell her what she should do and give her validation as valuable or useful. Still a bit annoying to read, though.
I’m sure it’s more me than the books – not like they didn’t put in the effort – but I could just never get really invested in the whole enemies-to-almost-lovers-to-enemies-again-to-? Thing with Nezha. Like, he’s interesting in that you can do a 180 perspective flip and he’d clearly be just as suitable a protagonist as Rin is, and his life’s very sad and everything. But, like, we get a front row seat to Rin’s internal monologue, and she gets thirsty for plenty of terrible men (and one awful woman), the only thing that makes Nezha special is that he’s not at least twice her age. So I never really got nearly as emotionally invested in them as the books seemed to expect me to. Which does kind of hurt the whole final act of book three.
Speaking of – okay, the ending isn’t awful or anything, but it is kind of disappointing in being exactly what you would expect it to be, as far as Rin’s character arc goes? Which might be just because I was already primed to compare this to ASOIF and she just literally pulls a Daenerys (fire-aligned vengeance/justice character with revolutionary impulses and an autocratic sensibility is willing to burn down the world in the process of freeing it, goes mad with power and paranoia, needs to be put down for the good of the country), but still. Her reading Venka throwing her to the ground to avoid an assassination attempt as a betrayal and burning her to death before she realized what was happening was just really heavy handed, you know? Same with turning on Kitay, who at this point is her actual literal soulmate. (Also sad in a broader sense, because those two are like literally two of the only characters in the entire series I’d actually peg as worthy of/capable of being trusted with political power.)
The specifics aside, I’m a miserable enough person to appreciate how unsatisfying the actual resolution at the end of the book is – imperialism wins! Literally no choice but to sign those unequal treaties and hope you’re eventually able to grow strong enough to force them out! Everything is the same as before this forty-year cycle of wars except much, much worse! - but yeah, I really just don’t actually care about Nezha enough as a character for it to really land. Also Kitay and Venka deserved better, even if literally no one else did.
Anyway, yeah, good series. Would recommend if you like the genre and can stomach all the, well, everything.

Heartbroken
Tumblr media
Thanks for saying this @raimi I really appreciate it, and @fandomsandxfiles-writes for also encouraging me to post a while back too.
Tumblr media
Hey Everyone, so I finally have built up the courage to share the first Agent Carter fic I wrote. I wrote it back in May.
Dottie Underwood x Reader
Jack Thompson x Reader
It’s a Jack Thompson x Reader situation though y/n’s conversation is mainly with Dottie about it.
Summary: During a mission a drunk y/n has to distract Dottie, leading to sharing some secrets that she didn’t want to.
Another, Sameul y/n called out to the bartender, you knew it wasn’t very ladylike to be this drunk but you didn’t care; and you finally had a day off. You felt a tapping on your shoulder as you turned to see a worried Peggy Carter, a look you hadn’t often seen on the agent. “Peggy, what brings you here?” You questioned.
“I heard from Rose that you’ve been here all day” you watched her as she observed you. She noticed you had been slightly falling off the edge of the chair. “So I thought I’d come talk to you”.
“I’m fine Peg!” you exclaimed loudly, causing a table of men to turn and look in disappointment. Samuel placed the beer down in front of you, “Aah, my dear Sam, what took ya so long” you said taking a giant gulp of the drink.
“If I had put my money on it, I’d say this reaction is due to Jack”. You smirked hoping it would hide the fact she’d guessed correctly,”What makes you say that?”
“It’s the way he looks at you. I’ve also seen you avoid him”
“It’s a long story, are you going to the warehouse?” not wanting to continue the conversation as you sipped on your drink. “Yeah, we are. We need to catch Dottie.”
“She really is a pain in our backs, though I respect the diligence it takes to work that hard and love your job”.
“I really wish you weren’t drunk right now” She said quietly to herself but you heard the concern in her voice. “You need me don’t you. What’s going on, what do I need to do?”
“No, you stay, it’s your day off” “But, what’s the plan?” “We’re going to set up an electromagnetic field around the building to block her from leaving the premises. Four downstairs, four upstairs”. You stared at her for a second to process the information, “Won’t she see that?”
“I will be distracting Dottie while Rose, Dr Samberly, Mr Jarvis, Jack and Daniel set up everything” “Then what?”
“Dr Samberly will set it off”
You placed the glass down on the counter and fully gave her your attention, “don’t you or Sous need to be with him to help with that kind of power? I trust the guy but Aloysius crumbles under pressure”
“We don’t have a choice, they need to go set it up” “Exactly, so I’ll come. You need the help” “y/n, no you’re too drunk” “And you’re too outnumbered for a large space and a time limit, I can distract Dottie, everyone else can set up. You’ll have an extra hand downstairs and someone can be with Aloysius”.
“I said no, you’re drunk”. She gave you a look but gave in. Right outside the warehouse Peggy and you got to the meeting spot.
“You’re drunk!” Daniel called out to you when the two of you approached him. “I’m fine, let’s just focus on the task at hand” you said and waltz up to Jarvis and Rose to grab an earpiece.
Sousa turned his attention to Peggy, “you brought her here even though she’s drunk?”
“She insisted on coming along. Besides, I couldn’t stop her. She’s one of the few people we need right now. She can handle herself drunk, I’ve seen it”
You entered into the warehouse, making a mental note of the area, Jarvis split left and Peggy, with Rose went right on the bottom level. You continued to walk forward into the warehouse as Aloysius, Jack, and Sous went up the stairs to the second level.
Rose and Peggy reached their targets and started setting up the electromagnetic field they needed to cover the building. Jarvis reached his corner and had done the same. Jack and Daniel split up to cover all of the bases upstairs. Finally Aloysius had positioned himself above a steel box with an electromagnetic cannon ray thing Peggy was explaining on the way over. “I might have been a little too drunk to pay attention to the briefing” You thought to yourself.
You entered a smaller room located comically in the centre of the building. Your job was the most important, inside the box, the walls were a mint green and there was a little picnic bench type seating area. Dottie was sitting there with a book.
“Well, well, well, if it isn’t Brooklyn” “Dottie, always a pleasure”
You heard Peggy’s voice come in through your earpiece, “keep her distracted, were almost set up”. You made your way closer to the black widow, “What brings you here?”
“Wow agent, wasted on the job? That’s a new low, even for you. Boy troubles?” You ignored her comments, your eyes trailing her as she walked around the bench.
“You know what Dottie, I’ll do the talking here” “How about let’s play a game of truth?”
You paused a second and even thought about it. You really only had to distract Dottie, if she was doing all the work for you, why not. “Sure Dottie, what do you wanna know, my life is an open book”
“Have you ever been in love?” Dottie’s smile got bigger when she asked, it was a red flag but you were a little too numb to care, “I suppose I have”.
“When did you meet him?” She patted the bench as she sat back down, but you didn’t move a muscle, “We were six, We met outside a chapel, he popped my soccer ball and I hitchhiked in his daddy’s truck from Michigan all the way to New York”.
“You run away from home”
“I’m an orphan, thought I could start a better life in New York”
“Did he break your heart?”
That’s when it clicked, she knew exactly what she was talking about, she wanted specific answers out of you. “Hold your horses there missy. You’ve asked a bunch of questions, my turn”
Jarvis’ voice came though on the earpiece, “I’m all set down here”, and Sousa’s voice followed, “copy that, Jarvis, can you go see if the south tower is set, while Peggy and Rose finish up the others”, “Of course chief”. You focused on the task at hand, “What was it really like growing up in Russia?”
“Oh y/n, it was wonderful, as I’ve told Peggy I was jealous of women like her who could do whatever they pleased, but living here for as long as I have, there’s no respect for women. In Russia it was such a wonderful learning experience”.
“Being tied to a bed is your idea of wonderful?” “It was by choice”
In that moment you almost pitied her, she’d never known a life outside of that prison camp. “But here, even though some men don’t like it, we do have freedom”
“Women in your country are oppressed!”
“Not for long, I envision an America where women are in all positions of power”
“So tell me y/n, how did you end up in this line of work? You see I was born for this? In jail I heard a little rumour that a broken heart pushed you here”
And there it was, Dottie liked to pray on weakness, maybe it was because of her cold heart, but it was clear that the truth game was some sort of sick power move, “I don’t have to answer that”
“But you will, because you and I both know that this is an attempt to distract me. You won’t stop making mindless conversation with me until my dear friend Peggy tells you to”
You finally moved towards the bench, “well, if we both know this is a charade then I guess we don’t need to keep that up”
“I don’t do well when I’m bored. You can’t fight me because the SSR needs me alive and unless you tell me your story, I will walk out of here, ruining whatever it is that poor Peggy is up to”
You thought to yourself for a second, when Peggy’s voice rang in your ears followed by Daniel’s, “were almost done” “Us too y/n just hold off a little longer.
“I’m bored” Dottie said in a sing songy voice, “You seriously think I’m that drunk? That I’ll just spill all my secrets?”
She smirked, as she walked towards you, closing the gap
“You’ll never get away, not this time Dot” “y/n/n” “My name is y/n” “right, only Jack Thompson can call you y/n/n”
“That’s enough Dottie” You put your arm out to stop her from moving past you, but she just swatted it away and smiled again. You thought to yourself how could her smile possibly get any bigger. “Alright, you won’t tell me your story then I guess I’m leaving. Bye.”
You watched as she started to leave. There was no way you were going to tell her the story but she was leaving. Jack’s face appeared as you closed your eyes. You moved your hair behind your ear, revealing the earring mic. You couldn’t think straight, and she was right, you needed to wait for Peg’s order, so you couldn’t just let her leave.
“I set dinner for him”
Dottie stopped, immediately pulling a 180. Peggy and Rose shared a look, knowing this was not going to end well and Jack stopped dead in his tracks mentally kicking himself.
“I was young, in love, and, well stupid... I wanted to marry him” You started slowly, knowing they were almost done. “Rose and I are set, moving onto the next one” Peggy stated, “Same” Jarvis’ voice followed, finally Sousa spoke, “Jack, Samberly and I are working on it”
Dottie gave you a look and tapped her foot getting impatient, “He was drafted and I’d never been more proud of him. So I made this dinner, so we could celebrate. It was something he wanted to do. Fight for our freedom” Dottie smiled and sat down at the bench, once again trying to get you to sit with her. This time you did, “Go on” she cooed. “Keep stalling” Daniel’s voice rang in your ear. “His car was supposed to leave in 3 days, but he decided to get on the one that was leaving that night. I often think about why he stood outside my door, refusing to come in. All he had to say for himself was that he was leaving. I thought he was joking. But he was serious. And he left.”
“Then?”
You paused and stared at her. There was radio silence on the other end. You knew they were still working. You really didn’t want to talk about this.
“y/n, I’m waiting”
“Let’s talk about something else, maybe, say the great depression?” You tried to change the subject, “not a chance in hell. I won’t ask again”. You knew that wouldn’t work. Finally Peggy’s voice came through again, “We need more time”. You took in a breath to calm your nerves, sobering up having to talk about this while everyone could hear you, “I ran out after him, I begged him to at least talk to me, tell me why”
Rose and Peggy exchange a glance of utter shock as they’d never heard this story, not even on a girls night. Jarvis ran up to them to help finish the last magnetic tower.
“You know what I got as a response? His back walking down the street”
Daniel and Aloysius gave Jack a look, not surprised but disappointed.
You looked at Dottie, knowing that you’d have to continue, “On top of that, I was labeled as the broken one. The one who was left by-“
“People threw garbage at me, treated me like some sort of witch. One day I went for a walk and there were three guys that tried to abduct me. I beat them up and a Colonel saw it, Murdoch saw it, took me in and I ended up in Russia fighting more Russian assassins like yourself. It’s how I ended up in the war, it’s how I met Howard, it’s how I ended up in the SSR.”
Jarvis didn’t want to hear anymore of it so he removed his earpiece, “I can’t listen to this anymore” I heard Daniel say, “were almost done” for what felt like the millionth time.
“So to answer your question Dottie, yes. I did end up here because of a broken heart. It wasn’t the lifestyle I had always imagined, but I’m glad I’m not some blond asshole chief’s wife”
Aloysius had managed to get everything going, “give us 5 seconds” is all I heard.
“You know what Dottie, sometimes I feel like you like being locked up”
“Now”
You pulled out your gun and aimed at her, “Dottie Underwood, you are under arrest” She didn’t seem phased at all, simply replying, “wonderful”.
Dottie kicked the gun out of your hand and tried to escape, Luckily you saw it coming but your reaction times were a little delayed. She managed to free herself and kicked you in the face twice, but you weren’t having that, tackling her to the ground, in doing so activating bars that surrounded you. Inside a jail cell of electromagnets, “Well that was new” she said to herself.
“Looks like we’re both stuck in this prison”, you placed those handcuffs on her and she laughed in your face, “at least the prison I’m going to, it’ll be easy to escape”
Daniel and Peggy grabbed her by the arms and pulled her away.
Once again Dottie Underwood was caught, but she was right. Jack was y/n’s prison and he broke your heart, but you still loved him.
THE END

(Echee post) Emma Watson criticises 'dangerously unhealthy' pressure on young women
Posted on March 30 2014
From theguardian.com March 2014 Emma Watson has criticised the "dangerously unhealthy" image projected by the fashion industry and said the pressure to look perfect has taken its toll on her. The actor has also described her doomed attempts to merge into the background as a student at an American university, where she found herself being trailed everywhere by British photographers. After the recent New York premiere of Noah, she tweeted a photograph of the array of cosmetics – and a guardian angel pin – that she said were essential aids to her flawless appearance, and another of herself in a backless dress captioned: "I did NOT wake up like this." The actress said she is better at taking criticism these days than she once was. "As a younger woman, that pressure got me down, but I've made my peace with it. With airbrushing and digital manipulation, fashion can project an unobtainable image that's dangerously unhealthy. I'm excited about the ageing process. I'm more interested in women who aren't perfect. They're more compelling." Watson became famous playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies and has been constantly in work since. She is about to start filming a thriller, Regression, by Alejandro Amenábar and is also trying to complete her degree at Brown University, Rhode Island. She enrolled in 2009 for what would have been a four year course, but has taken several breaks for film work, and spent a year studying at Oxford. "After Harry Potter, all that mattered was university," she said, in an interview with the Sunday Times. "It wasn't always easy to break down barriers, as having men from the British press following me with cameras didn't help my mission to integrate. The American press, by contrast, "afforded me so much privacy", but her fellow students recognised her at once. "On the first day, I walked into the canteen and everyone went completely silent and turned around to look at me. I had to say to myself 'it's OK, you can do this'. You just have to take a deep breath and gather your courage."
GUARDIAN COMMENTERS SAY: So something like this Burberry campaign she did a few years ago? Hypocrisy at its finest. She flaunts with the fashion industry and enjoys its perks all the time, but hops on the 'female beauty' bandwagon and enjoys a moan when it suits her. I'd find her socially conscientious pleas convincing if she hadn't profited in the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) from the big, bad, evil fashion/beauty industry. A few years ago, Emma Watson appeared in high-profile advertising companies for posh Paris fashion house L'ancome. I'm guessing she was handsomely remunerated for her 'work'. Certainly she was not forced into letting her photo shopped image be used to market expensive cosmetics and perfumes. Did she only discover how 'oppressive' the fashion industry is when L'ancome cancelled her lucrative contract? Ms Watson is essentially a third-rate actress, and her pronouncements on large and complex issues, such as the pressures on women, are so idiotically vapid that one is brought to conclude that she really can have very little aptitude for higher education. I mean, her comments are hardly indicative of an educated person, or even of a moderately literate or intelligent person. By the way, I understand that she spent a year at Oxford as a visiting and/or exchange student while enrolled at Brown. How come? She is a British national, and so by rights she should not have gone to Oxford on a visiting/exchange student programme, irrespective of whether she happens a student at an American university. If I am wrong about this, then I should like to have some explanation as to her status at Oxford, and how she came by it. Otherwise, I suppose that one might be forgiven for thinking that it is yet another case of a once respectable academic institutions bowing down before the false idols of celebrity and money. (This is quite apart from the fact that all that one has read about her since she began life as a student concerns her acting career, her modeling and her various boyfriends.) SOME COMMENTS FROM THE DM ARTICLE Notice how it's always people who are very aware of how attractive they are that babble on about how it's okay to have physical blemishes? I'd like to see an ugly person say the same thing. Only someone young, beautiful and with her whole life before her can say that, and mean it. Sometimes, her comments maKe her more stupid. Get lost and Wingardium Leviosa. What a daft thing to say. But, then again, this is coming from someone who can't seem to finish uni. I feel like I've aged about 10 years reading this article. Annoying girl. Not only annoying, but also pretentious and disingenuous. ^None of this is my words. It from commentators from two sites emma-what-son posted many more so check out her page

Here's what I think As for what she is saying about Brown it's a complete 180 from how she described it before 2013. In 2013 she started to elude to the fact it was not as great as she made it out to be. She gushed how wonderful her experiences had been to so many magazines. Now I think she's looking for pity and to have excuses why she never stayed at Brown. She preached how she was staying put. I am so fucking tired of having to post quote after quote proving my point with this when she lies time after time. She is not honest! What the truth is doesn't matter because she always lying. It's a constant thing with her. As for the pressures on women she is really a piece of work. The guardian commenters summed it up nicely. She had no problem attaching herself to Burberry and Lancôme. She's had no problem giving them praise and talking about fashion and make-up in just about every interview. That part where she talked about photo shopping and air brushing. Just wow! Did she see the Wonderland magazine she edited? Some photos it didn't even look like her. She'll continue allowing her image to be manipulated no matter what. She thinks she’s aging? She still looks 15 without all the make-up and photo shopping. Last year she was stopped at JFK because they thought she was a unaccompanied minor. Did you know one of the product she pushed when modeling for Lancôme was an anti-age cream? That's the dumbest comment in her entire interview. But really she's said this kind of stuff the last three years and most notably in 2011 where she had a various quotes about body image and being comfortable in your skin. I wont bore you with those quotes since I have before. She gets lauded for those comments and people place her in role model status but when you closely look at it they were just words that meant nothing at the time other than to make people think, “Emma is so anti-Hollywood!! She’s a role model for women and young girls” but meanwhile she never believed in any of it in the first place. At the time she said those things she was at a more healthier weight than she ever was. In 2011 you can tell she either stopped working out or ate more. I thought she looked her best then. Now she’s back to stick thin and even surpassed it a way IMO is unhealthy. She sending a bad message to women. From standard.co.uk July 2011, “She sees modeling as an extension of acting, in fact - just playing a role - but is conflicted about its demands. “I think the pressure the media and the fashion industry put on women to look a certain way is pretty intense. There’s a certain tyranny to trying to achieve that kind of beauty. I don’t know, I’m maybe not the best person to speak about this because I obviously completely adhere to it,” she laughs nervously. “ ^She really needs to start taking her own advice and quit being a judgmental hypocrite. Not just with this topic but everything she tends to speak out against that she does it herself. Recently she tweeted a photo of all this make-up and I posted this on my tumblr days ago
Tumblr media
^Same phone in this photo is what they're using in the bottom photo that I also posted on tumblr She said something else recently (Sunday Times interview) that is just typical Emma. I covered this a few times. From emmawatsonbelgium.blogspot.be March 2014, "For someone who has starred in eight blockbuster movies and is worth an estimated £30m, she is endearingly modest about how green she felt leaving Harry Potter behind in 2011. Emerging from that magical machine was “really intimidating”, she says. “I’d done two tiny plays when I was, like, six and eight, but I wasn’t driven to act. I wasn’t doing Oscar acceptance speeches into a hairbrush." Yeah it might have no been a hairbrush but who knows she could be lying about that. She'd practice her speeches in mirrors. From telegraph.co.uk July 2007,  "Pauline is utterly obsessed with being an actress and I was just like that when I was younger. I dreamt of it. I practised speeches in front of mirrors. Whenever there was a part at school, I went for it. I was probably a bit of a show-off in the sense that any chance to get up and be seen, I did it. I was such a drama queen. I used to wail and moan and cry, and little things were blown up into being big things. I don't know how my parents stood it, really. I've grown up a bit. I've had to. I actually really want to be an actress, a proper actress who makes it her career. I'm always expecting to be found out and I thought, If I'm no good, now is the time to find out." She really wants people to think she all of a sudden wants to act. What I think is she is really trying to distance herself from her lack luster post Potter career by making it out like she now wants to act and that’s why she has no lead roles because her resume does not equal her hype. The last few years she’s separated herself from “always wanted to be an actress” to “I was not sure”. She’s being disingenuous as usual and people believe it. Plus she said she did modeling so directors and producers would look at her differently so that's why she used Burberry and Lancôme. And she did a course at RADA in 2008 so if she was not sure or didn't want to than why did she do these things? One more thing from the Sunday Times interview From emmawatsonbelgium.blogspot.be March 2014, "It’s about as close as she’ll get to revealing anything about her newest relationship, with Matt Janney, rugby hunk and Oxford’s most eligible bachelor. “I can’t comment on it, I’m sorry,” she says, suddenly jumping up and hastily bundling her things back into her bag, which has exploded across the sofa beside her. “I’m trying to keep my private life sacred, although I don’t want to lock myself up and never go out. So I guard it, because I don’t date people who are famous, and I don’t think it’s fair that, all of a sudden, intimate details of their personal life are public as a direct result of me. I find that so uncomfortable, and I wish there was a way I could protect those people, but it’s not in my control.” When I suggest her boyfriends are consenting adults, she looks worried. “But you don’t choose who to love, who you have feelings for, do you?” She throws her phone into her bag and retreats home to pack, as she’s flying to LA. Just a normal girl, then, off to present an Oscar."
Tumblr media
So she can go to international magazines and complain she can't find a man or that men are intimidated by her? She had in the past before Will Adamowicz. It was in almost every one of her interviews for a few years. So she can use Matt Janney (this new guy) on a beach in a bikini PDA session as a publicity stunt to cover up her ex boyfriend being caught rolling coke bombs and also use him to product place an iPhone in Madrid but she wants to keep it private? And she doesn't date famous guys? What about Johnny Simmons (Young Neil) and George Craig (Front man for rock group One Night Only)?  If you can Google their name and you see them in movies or music videos, they're famous.

If I Could Ask the Devs 10 Questions: A WOJ Interview
I think if you’ve known me for a while, you probably know I would jump at the idea of getting to interview the SSO devs, particularly because they tend to have internalized or cherry picked interviews that only focus on what they want to tell us, and not on the questions the players tend to have about the game. So if I could have an interview with the devs, these are the 10 questions I would ask.
Sidenote: I have 10 core topic questions with some brief follow-up questions for clarity. If you counted, yes, there would be more than ten, but there are ten core areas.
What kind of updates can we expect for this year; in terms of new areas, horses, features, etc.?
When can we expect the return of bigger area expansions with full side quests prepared for them and secrets like in the Harvest Counties and Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur launches?
Speaking of updates, about 80% of SSO community wants to see the older Gen 1 & Gen 1.5 models updated across the board like with the update to Gen 1.5. Considering that this is a super majority, and these horses are paid for content, what does SSO intend to do to meet this request from its player base?
Again, since this content is already been paid for, would an “upgrade” feature for purchased old models require additional payment, making player pay to make already purchased content playable again?
If opposed to updating earlier gen models, why does SSO ignore something a super majority of their players want that seems it would also benefit the devs work load?
How does SSO plan to counter price bloat, like what’s happened on the upgraded pets?
Expected counterpoint: SSO has said that the walking pets are more expensive because of “all the hard work that went into them.” This is both a sunken cost and false equivalence fallacy. It’s the developers’ job to continue to make SSO better, and make better content for the game. That should not result in bloated prices for players, but rather more product that they can spend their money on. Saying that “all that hard work” just went into making expensive content diminishes the rest of the work made on the game and it trivializes the job the devs are supposed to be doing. It’s your job to make content for the game. We should not have to pay extra for something we already paid for, and certainly not at a bloat of 4-5x the initial cost for a few bonus animations.
On the note of purchased content, over 70% of SSO’s player base thinks that the game is overpriced, but 90%, regardless of their opinions on fairness, say they would buy more often if the prices were lowered. Is there any intention to lower the prices around SSO to make it more accessible?
Is there any intention is making supplementary content, like more unique items in the merch store that aren’t simply designs with your logo on them?
Would SSO be able to release the comic in English any time soon?
Are there any plans to rerelease the Starshine Legacy games on Steam or the teams merch store?
SSO prides itself for being a narrative oriented story. Are there any plans to establish an official writing team on SSO?
What about a canon wiki about the series?
One of the things the devs have stated about the genderlock on SSO is that it’s to create a space for women in gaming. Does SSO donate to any charities that support girls to play video games like Child’s Play, Code Liberation, or Games For Change, or charities that help women in general like National Women’s Law Center, Dress For Success Worldwide, Girls Not Brides, or Futures Without Violence?
What actions outside of having female leads and job equality is SSO pursuing to promote gender equality?
Can we expect the ability to get magic powers that we can use outside of cutscenes?
Would this involve the “power-up” system the devs have discussed before?
What kind of new customization can we expect in the future of the game?
Would this include the return of the housing function?
Will this provide more options for other gender presenting players besides femme?
Would SSO consider letting the player input their own pronouns into the game without changing the story in any other way?
Would SSO ever consider switching to an expansion based system over the weekly release schedule?
If not, why is the weekly release better for the game than having larger, less frequent updates?
If they would, what would this mean for daily content, in terms of daily quests and achievements, as well as the payment system for an expansion?
Would SSO ever bring back more fan generated content, like the T-Shirt contest?
With SSO branching out to more unique types of story telling, would SSO hold contests for writing companion short stories or producing audio stories like Texas Bluebells?
Will SSO release a public list of community guidelines, so both players and moderators know what is correct behavior, and so also ensure that moderators are upholding SSO’s rules and not personal ones?
What about an internal reporting system to simplify reporting?
Question I Think Would Be Asked Of Me
1. Why are you so critical of the game?
Ok. Here’s the essay.
I suppose it would be easy to say that it’s out of spite. And there’s probably some of that in there. Some innate bitterness over the fact that the PR team, for a period, actively deleted anything critical, regardless of content. The fact that they outright lied about empirical data the players were giving the devs (see the AQH release). Sure, there’s the fact that I’ve seen and had SSO’s dev team do a 180 on me from offering me a space on the mod team for trying to promote a better community to having their devs and outreach insult and demean me on the basis of my comments being “critical.”
And it does drive me a little nutty to see the devs so successfully have turned their player base on anyone who might critique the game. To see my hard work trying to get players to be decent people in the game turned on its head when I say one word crosswise about something that might make the game better. And I’ve be wrong to say I don’t get frustrated when I talk about changes SSO could apply with after being a gamer for way longer than most of the people debating me, with enough research done on my own to be the basis for a master’s thesis, only to be told by someone who SSO is their first video game telling me how the industry works. But that’s really not it.
So, here it is:
Star Stable is one of the only non-combat MMOs in the world.
Let me repeat that; Star Stable is one of the only non-combat MMOs in the world. And I imagine that invokes a sense of pride, like you’ve hit some kind of niche. But that’s not a truth because of some lucky chance.
Non-combat MMOs survive on small niche markets, before consistently dying off because of failure to expand beyond their initial targets. And it’s not for lack of trying. People love non-combat games; Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, Nintendogs, Roller Coaster and Zoo Tycoon, the Myst series, so on. But when those games refuse to look passed their niche, to expand and improve, they have historically failed as MMOs because one niche cannot fund an MMO.
And where SSO has survived on the niche market of “horse girl fantasy,” it is most certainly not expanding. SSO talks about its overall player count being in the millions, but ignores that fact that for every unique player there are five duplicate accounts, which is a metric that continues to bloat. That out of 12 million players, only 3% of those players are regularly active, compared to most MMOs which will hit 15-25% of their player base regularly between expansions. And no matter how you swing those numbers, no matter how much more you bloat the prices, that is not a long term lifespan. You can’t survive on that niche.
I genuinely believe SSO could help influence the industry. And I don’t mean that in a “if you follow all my ideas, everything will end up perfectly.” I’m not always right, and I’m willing to admit that. But the fact that SSO has been so resistant to any criticism results in a mob mentality with its core player base and it ostracizes anyone who can’t put up with that attitude any longer. Not only does it put the developers into an echo chamber where they can’t improve, it continues to push away the people who care enough to sit down and explain why they’re frustrated. You tighten that niche. You limit your market. You run out of resources.
And I do think SSO has already made leaps ahead for parts of the industry. The number of people who say SSO was their first MMO, their first game, is amazing. It’s great to see a game helping young people get into gaming, particularly girls who, when I was their age, were bullied for even liking video games. So for SSO to make that platform is amazing. But they cannot abuse that by taking advantage of new gamers who don’t know any better about how games are made or sold. I feel, and I feel this of every company, not just SSO, that there is a moral obligation to do right by people, and not to take advantage of their ignorance. And with such a powerful platform to invite young people into this sphere, into making new games and telling new stories, it is imperative that SSO does right by people.
I’m hard on SSO because I care, immensely. You could say I have a fixation on the game, really. I am invested in the survival of this game. But you can’t survive without getting better. Not to mention, the criticism SSO gets is free! From thousands of people. When I edited my book, I paid over $2,000 for my two editors I worked with, and that’s not even getting into beta readers and reviewers. I would love to be able to get feedback for free like SSO does. Because it’s an opportunity to improve because we are never going to be perfect. And if SSO wants to survive the trends surrounding their genre, then they can leave no room for quarter to people like me. Not out of oppression of people’s voices, but by listening and making a better game.
Thanks for your time.

I’d like to talk about Graham for a little bit.
About a month and a half ago, this thing just sort of spontaneously happened that was on the order of the old Jerry Lewis telethons, raising an absolutely jaw-dropping amount of money for an organization called Mermaids, which is great and absolutely deserves to have it. I should clarify before anything further too that I’m using “spontaneously happened” here only to mean absolutely nobody involved had any possible idea that it was going to become the huge thing it became, not that it didn’t do so because of a lot of really impressive work, mainly from Casey Explosion and Dan Olson who both ended up playing producer as guests started hopping in and did phenomenal jobs they can’t get enough credit for.
I am, of course, quite thrilled to see how well that went, particularly since just something like a week prior I’d independently tried to start a charity drive for Mermaids which was... decidedly unsuccessful. And I came oddly close to getting properly involved in this one, because around the time it was at the $1000 mark, “guests” were mainly just people I’m personally friends with and haven’t talked to in a while, I was talking about joining in, but the timing of me getting hold of a microphone and a quiet room and guest coordination shook out weird and I lost my place in line to like, Chelsea Manning and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who I will freely admit were bigger donation draws than me talking to old friends and sharing info about trans charities and transphobic groups trying to undermine them would have been.
One thing I’d have liked to have brought up is the other thing that made the whole event a bit bittersweet, personally. The whole thing was explicitly advertised as existing purely to spite one Graham Linehan, who rather infamously had spearheaded an initiative to undermine funding for Mermaids because these days he is a cartoon villain and defunding a children’s charity was the sort of thing he’s all about now. And I’m saying “now” and “these days” because I have kind of a weird history with Graham. Once upon a time, he was my biggest fan.
No, really. If you don’t believe me, go do a quick twitter search for him mentioning me. It’s a bit surreal to look back on. It was weird to live through at the time too. He started following me at a point where I had something like 10 other twitter followers, and was just super super pumped about literally everything I was writing about, you know, the rise of this group of transphobic fascists weaponizing twitter mobs. I’d start writing something and he’d just pop up in my DMs. Which... OK now it’s weird because I’m the last person the arguable king of all transphobes should be following, but at the time it was also weird because he hadn’t gotten into that and was this famous TV writer.
So first of all, it just sends a chill down my spine any time I see him talking about having trans friends who like him just fine and wondering if he’s still trying to count me there. Because I mean, the last time I actually talked to him it was pretty damn civil. Mainly because I was trying to make a calm rational case explaining that he’d just linked horrifyingly bigoted propaganda out, but I could see him grasping for that straw.
Those prior interactions color the whole thing for me in a really tragic light though. Usually, when you see someone who did a thing you enjoy(ed) tear their face off and reveal a disgusting monster, you get to go “ugh, I can’t believe I never picked up on what a creep this person was the whole time!” but... I personally don’t have that luxury here. At the point I knew him, I can actually say he was a decent, caring guy, willing to stick his neck out in a big big way for worthy causes. He promoted the hell out of everything I wrote for a while, and elevated the voices of a ton of other trans women and other marginalized people under attack from nazis. He really went all in with a pretty big media platform against that crap at a time where it wasn’t especially popular or safe to do so, and he campaigned about as hard as was humanly possible to repeal Ireland’s abortion ban, sharing some really horrifying personal stories which I’d probably still dig out when trying to argue the subject if it wouldn’t be giving oxygen to such a huge bigot. And for whatever it’s worth, that infamous I.T. Crowd episode? Some 6 years after the fact he really was self-conscious about that still, and just sort of... approaching every trans woman he knew one by one to try to explain where he was coming from with it. Which of course is not at all the same thing as apologizing for it, but presumably had he stayed that course, he’d have maybe grabbed some sensitivity readers before the next such bit went to air.
So yeah. My honest assessment of where he was at in late 2014 through early 2015 there is... well-intentioned guy with some blind spots legitimately trying to be a better person and work towards some general trans allyship...
... and then he just suddenly pulled this complete 180, and it’s one of the most chilling things I’ve ever seen. From my perspective, it was like being in a zombie movie where someone gets bit. First they’re fine, then you see a big ol’ red flag (I don’t recall whether the first such was him going to bat for the serial abuser creep we just finally kicked out of tabletop or him linking a post on freaking 4th wave now), and you have this little window of maybe we can cut off the infection before it spreads, and that fails and suddenly you’ve just got this shambling monster wearing the face of a former ally in the fight against them. I suppose a more grounded metaphor would be like comparing it to someone you know joining a cult. every value they had is suddenly gone and they’re just removing themselves from all their old circles to hang out exclusively with these dangerous creeps.
I can’t stress enough that this isn’t me saying “there’s still good in him.” Dude’s out there getting the police showing up at his door because he won’t stop harassing random women and literally organizing letter-writing campaigns to cut the funding to a charity that keeps marginalized children from killing themselves. That is way too far over the cliff to entertain any notion of someone ever crawling back. No my point in all this that moral consistency isn’t anywhere near as solid as people like to tell themselves it is. People can go from vehement anti-fascism to full on fascist over a single conversation with the right recruiter on the right day and there’s really nothing you can do about it but hope you recognize it before your denial starts to amplify the damage.
At least I sure as hell hope there’s nothing else you can do about it because again, this guy was literally my biggest fan before he suddenly flipped, and I don’t want to have to second guess myself about what part of me saying “fascism is bad and trans people don’t deserve this sort of harassment” was sufficiently unclear that a guy hanging on my every word for like a year could get all backwards.
This really isn’t a story with a feel-good moral at the end. I mean, the best spin I can put on it is, moral compasses can break, so be sure to pull yours out regularly and double check that it’s still pointing north, don’t just follow the person ahead of you and assume theirs is working? Make sure you’re familiar with a definition of fascism that doesn’t rely on what costumes someone’s wearing? Bear in mind that the oppressed minority turning out to be the real bullies is just not a thing that happens? Just... don’t ever be like Graham here.

the sorcerer’s shadow
so my sister has been watching season 3 and we recently went through the last disc
and i have to write something down about this episode
this episode hits exactly the right note 2/3 of the way through
it’s amazing
a n d   t  h   e  n
they LOSE THEIR NERVE OR SOMETHING AT THE END AND PUNK OUT AND I JUST
arghhhhhhhhhhhh
The scene where Merlin tells Gilli about his magic is incredible and so well-written.  It FINALLY goes where this show needs go with regard to questions of ethics and morality (which is, coincidentally, where the show keeps refusing to go with Morgana, AGAINST ALL COMMON SENSE), and the scene looks like it’s about to advance Merlin’s character development in a significant way - like it’s about to be the turning point for his next arc, the moment where we can pinpoint the beginning of the second half of his story:
Merlin: I know how it feels.  I understand.
Gilli: Then you understand why I have to fight.  If Uther is killed, so what?  How many of our kind have died at his hands?  How many more will? It’s time those with magic fought back!
if uther is killed, so what?
FINALLY.  Someone said it!
Merlin: Gilli -
Gilli: You can’t tell me what to do!
Merlin: You need to learn to use your magic for good; that is its true purpose!  It’s not meant for your own vanity!
Okay, but what does it mean for you to protect a king who drowns children?  To preserve a regime which persecutes its own people?  Is that "good?”  Who does that benefit?
Gilli: I’m not going to apologize for who I am!  You can be a servant and - and pretend you’re less than them, but I’m not going to -
Merlin: No, that’s not what I do!
Gilli: No?  You’re defending the king!  Protecting a man that would have you dead!
Merlin:  I’m protecting you!
Gilli: You’ve been pretending for so long now that you’ve actually forgotten who you are.
Merlin: That - that’s not true.
Gilli: Isn’t it?
Merlin: ...no.
Except it IS.  And he knows.  And it shows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then we immediately cut to him in his room, awake despite the late hour.
Tumblr media
You know, when we talk about losing sleep - when we ask, accusingly, “how do you sleep at night?” - we’re talking about guilt.
Merlin knows; he’s afraid that everything Gilli just said is true.  And, thinking back, when we as an audience look back at Season 3, we realize suddenly that we haven’t actually heard much from Merlin this season about how hiding his magic makes him feel conflicted.  In contrast to seasons 1 and 2, when his double life is causing him enough pain that he nearly confesses in 1.10 and nearly runs away with Freya in 2.9, in S3, we don’t see him struggle with it outwardly on any kind of regular basis.  He’s deluded himself, at least superficially, into becoming comfortable with the lie, into enjoying the life that the lie permits him to lead.
And now that Gilli has confronted him with a dose of truth, the reality of his situation comes rushing back.
Is he really any more in the right than Morgana?  What kind of moral high ground can he possibly claim when he allies himself with a king bent on exterminating his own people?  What kind of right does he have to criticize other people’s acts of resistance when he’s sitting pretty up in the castle, side by side with his oppressors, while others like him suffer?
He’s been confronted with this question before, and it’s been lingering in the background ever since, ever-present, waiting for the moment when it can’t be ignored anymore:
Are you saying you’d rather keep your magic a secret for Arthur’s sake than use it to protect your friends and family?
and
This isn’t about Arthur, this is about your friends.  Are you going to abandon them?
What, like you did?
I’m here now.
Yeah.  Yeah, and you could end this.  If you used your magic, no one else would have to die.
You know I can’t.
Can’t or won’t?  I’m not the one abandoning these people, Merlin.  You are.
This is a moral question that has been BEGGING to be asked for three seasons.  It is ESSENTIAL and INSEPARABLE from the story the writers are trying to tell, and the fact that they refuse to ask it does a disservice to Merlin’s character arc and makes Morgana’s storyline less satisfying.  The story HAS to engage with this issue.  Somebody has to ask the question: if Uther dies, so what?  Why are people with magic considered acceptable losses as long as he can stay on the throne?  What’s he done that’s amazing enough to be worth the deaths of all these innocent people?  Why is an oppressed population supposed to just sit and accept their victimization indefinitely and without complaint until Arthur - maybe - comes riding in on a white horse?  The story HAS to ask these questions, even if the answers might reveal some uncomfortable moral quandaries/failings on the part of our protagonist - I can’t imagine this show going two more seasons without finally grappling with this issue.
So anyway.  This episode was doing an amazing job of starting that process, particularly with that confrontation between Gilli and Merlin.  We were going there!
AND THEN THEY PUNKED THE HECK OUT; I CANNOT BELIEVE IT
I don’t know why they backed off at the end of the episode and did that 180 to literally having the dragon say “we have to wait and trust that arthur will give magic-users their freedom” and just...completely dropping every difficult ethics question that the earlier part of the episode asked.  I can’t understand why.  They’d already nailed it!  It was amazing.  The character work they were doing was amazing.  It was the necessary pivot point, the Third Season Swing.  It was setting up the new central question/tension for the next two seasons - the switch from “how do i keep my magic secret” to “how can i JUSTIFY keeping my magic secret?”
Which, the spoiler would have been: he can’t.
But the show backed away from the questions it posed, at least for the remainder of that episode, and all i can do i HOPE that they resurface somewhere in the next two seasons that I haven’t watched yet.

Change My Mind? ...Not Really
Ok, so this is probably an unpopular opinion...
Comparing Steven Universe to something like Avatar: The Last Airbender after Change Your Mind and stating that SU comes even remotely close to A:tLA in terms of quality is waaaaaay overselling things. Spoilers below.
Change Your Mind was good. Even great, in some parts. That bit where Steven re-fuses with his gem was probably the best animation the show ever had. I enjoyed some of the characterizations. I enjoyed the new fusions, and Lapis and Peridot’s new forms. Also the CG’s new forms. And White Diamond was a very interesting villain.
But one episode does not make a show. And even something like Change Your Mind has its flaws. Numerous ones, in fact. That doesn’t make Steven Universe bad, per se, but going on to compare it to one of, if not the most, highly rated, well-loved, critically acclaimed animated shows of all time and saying they are even close to each other in quality is a bit much. Maybe calm down from the fan-hype high you have after watching the episode before making that claim.
Like, it was a good episode, but I was serious last night when I asked, “Now What?” The show has no conflict. No more unanswered questions. We went from barely getting any information or plot development to suddenly the whole main conflict is resolved in one episode. One. And even a bunch of minor conflicts and questions were thrown in there too. Will Peridot and Lapis reform with stars? Check. Will Blue and Yellow join Steven’s side? Check. Will White Diamond brainwash anyone? Check. What will the CGs reformations look like? Check. Do the Diamonds’ ships form a Voltron-esque giant robot? Check. What do the gem fusions of Steven + Pearl/Garnet look like? Check. Who is the temple fusion? Check. Does White Diamond turn good? Check. Corruption cured? Check. Sadie still in her band? Check. New version of the theme song? Check. Lars comes home? Check. Everything happened in this episode. And it made for one awesome episode, yeah, but it got to a point where it was just one thing after the next. It was like the Crewniverse watched all those rant videos about the show, picked up on the fact that every one of those videos mention how nothing happens in the show, and said, “Oh yeah? Hold my beer.”
But let’s talk Avatar for a second. Because I thought about this last night but at first thought it unfair to compare these two shows, but since seeing a post doing just that I’m gonna now. Imagine for a moment, after watching three seasons where there was a clear, defined villain and an evil force that must be stopped by a pacifistic lead, after witnessing all the oppression and suffering the Fire Nation and specifically the Fire Lord cast down upon the world, after learning how conflicted Aang was about killing him, they just...redeemed Ozai. Like, he and Aang talk it out in just the span of one episode and suddenly every evil and horrendous thing Ozai and Azula and every other terrible person from the Fire Nation has ever done is forgotten. It’s ok everyone! The Fire Nation are the good guys now! They’ve learned their lesson, and we can all just sing and laugh and be happy all the fucking time. Isn’t life great?
Yeah, I don’t think people would be happy about that. And the thing is: in Avatar, they had a better shot at doing that than Steven Universe, because Avatar actually took the time to delve into its villains’ backstories, and revealing that while they’re still morally in the wrong, it’s not just as simple as everything being black and white. There are complications. The reasons for the things they do change, depending on the character and that character’s relationship with others and own emotional growth and personality. They redeemed Zuko, but over the course of the entire length of the show, because going from an abusive family that rewarded morally wrong behaviour and punished anything else to helping the very people trying to stop that family isn’t as simple as talking only once. Other characters like Azula were even more complicated, as she was trapped even deeper in that negative lifestyle to the point where it permanently fucked up her mental state. And then there’s Ozai, who was the end all be all of morally terrible people. Someone who could not be redeemed. Someone who could only be defeated. The only way Aang was able to do so without killing him was by physically stipping away any power Ozai had.
So compare that to Steven Universe. You have a sympathetic character from the ruling, evil dynasty that seemed the most likely to eventually join Steven’s side in Blue Diamond. You have a ruthless, goal-driven character who does the wishes of her superior even if it’s wrong because the repercussions of not following orders create a deep, pathological fear in said character, in Yellow Diamond. And then you have the end all, completely uncaring leader of said evil dynasty that has conquered thousands of planets, killed billions, including millions of its own kind, enforced a strict and oppressive social structure that resulted in mass cullings of anyone who didn’t fit, created horrific experiments with the still-conscious shards of the physical beings of its subjects, and rained down a forced mental illness that permanently disfigured their subjects minds when said subjects disagreed with them: White Diamond. Zuko, Azula, and Ozai, respectively. In Avatar, it took Zuko all three seasons to complete his full redemption arc. In Steven Universe, Blue Diamond wasn’t even mentioned by name until The Answer, 74 episodes in. Azula and Ozai didn’t even get redemptions, although Azula was given a few sympathetic moments. Yellow had, what, maybe a facial expression here or there until finally doing a 180 personality shift in the latest episode?
Now before you get your pitchforks, hear me out: I’m making this comparison because it shows the difference between doing a villain redemption right, and doing it wrong. Avatar took a long time to develop its villains. It made sure to establish them as more than just The Bad Guys - they were also individual characters on various levels of the morality scale for various reasons. They did this by establishing them as regular characters, even if only by mention, from episode one. They had some episodes that barely focused on them, but then others devoted entirely to them. There were episodes that beautifully compared them to the heroes. There were episodes that humanized them. There were episodes that highlighted what life was like from their side of things. Steven Universe did none of that. The most development we got for the Diamonds was in the last few episodes, and it only happened after they learned who Steven really was. And even then, we never got a sense of the problems they themselves were struggling with until Change Your Mind. We never really saw Blue’s emotional issues with regards to how they treat each other, just her mourning Pink all the time. We never saw just how much pressure Yellow was put under by White Diamond, nor her frustration at how she works so hard but receives next to no praise. And we certainly never got the sense that the reason White was such a perfectionist was that she herself was terrified of being labelled “flawed”. All of these things only came up in Change Your Mind. And even if there might have been hints I’m sure people are going to reach for in other episodes, it still would only apply to the very few episodes in which the Diamonds had any focus.
The result of this is an extremely rushed and forced redemption arc. Hell, even Peridot had a more developed redemption than the Diamonds. And it didn’t have to be that way, either. This wasn’t the series finale. It was just the end of this season. If they really wanted to redeem all three dictators in one episode, why didn’t they just stop it there? And then have the return to Earth kick off the new season? Why not have another special event or episode that focuses on Steven showing the Diamonds Earth? Have them finally find beauty in organic life. Have them initially be confused about it. Have then stumbling a little bit but eventually learning just how wrong they were. Have them admit just how wrong they were. And then at the end of the special, we finally get to healing corruption. Something that has been the main conflict since day one. Something that was an incredibly complicated subject. Something that had a huge impact on all the current characters in the show. Something that really should have been done in its own episode where more time could have been given to it. I know they probably will once the show gets started again, but that initial event of healing the corrupted gems is done, the Diamonds have gone back home, and any chance for conflict to arise is over. Even Jasper no longer seems like she’s going to be a source of conflict.
So, no. Steven Universe is not as good as Avatar, and isn’t even in the same league. This one episode still doesn’t change how horrible the pacing is for the rest of them. It still doesn’t change that in 160 episodes, well over half, at least, contribute nothing to the plot. And while they might establish some character, it’s always from Steven’s perspective. There was never an episode in which Steven wasn’t there to witness it, meaning the entire show is viewed from his - considerably biased - point of view. We never got a chance to see characters like the Diamonds acting without Steven present. We never got any development without Steven being the driving force behind it. Had a show like Avatar had done that with Aang? We never would have had episodes like Tales of Ba Sing Se, or Zuko Alone, or Boiling Rock, or Ember Island. And we certainly wouldn’t have gotten moments like Zuko and Azula’s Agni Kai, or Sokka asking Suki to teach him how to fight, or basically every character interaction with Iroh. Steven Universe wanted so badly to focus on Steven, and only Steven, that it shot itself in the foot when it came to character development and plot execution. It didn’t seem to know what it wanted to be for most of its episodes. And Change Your Mind was such a cluster fuck of wrapping up loose threads that people are still confused as to whether or not this was the season, or series finale.
Avatar had a clear and concise beginning, middle, and end. It knew what it was, and where it was going. It knew how to do character development and plot execution properly. Each season finale finished up the main conflicts of that season, leaving the largest arcs for the series finale. And it doesn’t try to redeem its villains all in one fucking episode through the “Power of Love”. Don’t even try to say the two shows are on the same fucking level.
Oh, and the animation was fantastic all the way through A:tLA, getting better with each season, instead of one beautifully animated scene in one episode and everything else being a hodgepodge of off-model characters and constantly changing styles.

Steven Van Zandt explores his fascinating and unlikely life
NEW YORK
About halfway through Steven Van Zandt's new memoir comes the point of no return.
That moment was in 1983, during the recording of Bruce Springsteen’s breakthrough album “Born in the USA.” Van Zandt, the bandanna-wearing guitarist for Springsteen’s E Street Band, had a fight with The Boss. And then he walked away. On the cusp of the big time.
“Leaving the E Street Band when I did, ended my life as I knew it,” Van Zandt tells The Associated Press in a recent interview. “You can’t be reborn until you die. So that had to happen.”
Van Zandt would go on to remarkable things. He became a solo artist, an outspoken voice for the oppressed around the world, a music educator and a radio host who found a second act as an actor on such TV shows as “The Sopranos” and “Lilyhammer.”
But he still looks back on that temporary break — Springsteen and Van Zandt would eventually reconcile — as a key turning point. In his book, “Unrequited Infatuations,” he calls it “the big mistake of my life” and “my very public career suicide.”
“In the end, you come to the same conclusion, which is: I wish I could have done both. I wish I could have stayed in the band and done all of these things,” he says. “But that’s not really realistic.”
Like its author, “Unrequited Infatuations” from Hachette Books is unassuming, smart, funny and honest, sometime brutally so. Van Zandt covers his life chronologically and also fills the book with the history of rock, his vision for a better world and advice for fledgling rockers.
“My narrative, which is kind of weaving its way through, is the least important part of it to me,” he says. “I didn’t need to confess anything. If I could find a way for it to be useful, I thought then it’s worth writing.”
Readers get a chance to explore all the different parts of the peripatetic Van Zandt, who produces and writes for other musicians, reunites rock pioneers like The Rascals, fights for the LGBT community in North Carolina and shows up on one of the most important TV shows of the 20th century.
It turned out that playing mob consigliere and strip club owner Silvio Dante on “The Sopranos” was a natural fit. He played the same role in the E Street Band, the guy with the good advice who doesn't want the spotlight. Both were sort of faithful underbosses.
“Before you know it, I’m playing that role that I have, in fact, played in real life,” he says. “Somebody has to be that guy in order for a family or a band or anything else to actually function properly. It ended up, very, very natural. And I think that’s why it worked so well.”
Ben Greenman, a novelist and journalist who has collaborated with such musicians as Questlove, George Clinton, Brian Wilson and Gene Simmons, said editing Van Zandt's book was endlessly fascinating since stories had a tendency to tumble out during their regular calls.
“I think the book is a real accurate reflection of the person — there’s plenty of humor and excitement and vivid writing and cameos,” he said. “A good rule of thumb is if it’s this fun to work on, it’s probably this fun to read.”
While building a portrait of one New Jersey artist, another emerges — that of Springsteen himself. To anyone who thinks The Boss' current persona as a working-class hero standing up against a rigged system was always there, think again.
Van Zandt explores a U-turn Springsteen made between “Born to Run” and “Darkness of the Edge of Town,” when his identity flipped from a rebel leaving town to conquer the big city into a rural, stand-and-fight balladeer.
“He completely, 180 degrees changed his identity. He’s fronting, he’s playing a character,” says Van Zandt. "That was the most important moment of his life, because he stayed in that persona forever.”
Van Zandt sent Springsteen the manuscript before publication and he suggested no changes. “He was in the book more than I planned on him being in the book because he turns out he’s a very big part of my life, you know?” Van Zandt says.
After his break with The Boss, Van Zandt made perhaps his biggest global statement when he spearheaded a cultural boycott of South Africa, forming Artists United Against Apartheid in the mid-1980s and writing the anti-apartheid anthem, “Sun City,” which shamed artists who performed in South Africa while Nelson Mandela was jailed.
“Would Mandela have gotten out of jail? Would the South African government have fallen? Probably. But we took years off both of those things,” Van Zandt writes.
Told that bringing a hateful regime to its knees was probably better than playing guitar in a band and Van Zandt laughs. “That’s not a career,” he says. “It don’t pay the bills, you know? And Nelson never offered to pay my rent.”
Van Zandt often found frustration without the comfort of the E Street Band. There is a shelf worth of albums he helped make — from a punk album to a musical theater show for Meat Loaf — that flopped or were shelved. A constant refrain in the book's second half is: “Nobody heard it.”
Another career as an actor in “The Sopranos” and “Lilyhammer” blossomed but there is a wistfulness that his solo music never caught on: “The third career, if you will, as an artist, really never found its audience, not yet anyway. Hence the title.”
Along the way, he throws shade at Paul Simon, Frank Zappa and Whitney Houston, while sharing how he became political and his rules for the best cover songs, nominating “You Keep Me Hanging On” by Vanilla Fudge as the best attempt.
It's all punctuated with advice from someone who's been on top and down low. “As soon as you can afford it, get separate rooms,” he advises new bands. To the main songwriters, “share a bit of the publishing money. It won’t kill you,” he writes. Perhaps the biggest pieces of advice: get a manager, something Van Zandt never did and still rues.
“It really did serve as some kind of a bit of therapy,” he says of the writing his memoir. “It’s always painful going through the mistakes and saying, ‘I wish I could have done this. I could have done that.’”

Today’s reading from the ancient book of Proverbs and book of Psalms
for june 29 of 2021 with Proverbs 29 and Psalm 29, accompanied by Psalm 10 for the 10th day of Summer and Psalm 30 for day 180 of the year (now with the consummate book of 150 Psalms in its 2nd revolution this year)
[Proverbs 29]
The one who remains defiant after repeated reprimands
will suddenly be shattered, and there will be no remedy for him.
When just leaders are in power, the citizens celebrate;
but when evil people gain control, their joys become moans.
An adult who loves wisdom and follows its ways gives his parents joy,
but one who hangs out with women of the street will lose everything.
A king brings stability to a land with his justice,
but one who makes unjust demands brings it to ruin.
The one who flatters his friend
is laying a trap that will catch his friend’s feet.
An evil person is sure to be trapped by his sin,
but a man who lives right is free to sing and be glad.
The just get involved with the poor and know their issues,
but the wicked cannot comprehend such concerns.
Mockers stir up a city and inflame passions,
but the wise know how to put out the fire and ease tensions.
When the wise go to court against a fool,
there will be ranting and raving but no resolution.
Bloodthirsty men despise those who are honest,
but the just find a way to help them.
A fool does not think before he unleashes his temper,
but a wise man holds back and remains quiet.
When it is known that a ruler listens to the words of liars,
soon he will have only scoundrels for advisors.
A poor man and his oppressor have this in common:
the Eternal created them and provides both with light and life.
The king who is fair in his treatment of the poor
will see his dynasty continue forever.
Corporal punishment and correction produce wisdom,
but a child left to follow his own willful way shames his mother.
When evil people are free to flourish, sin is on the rise,
but the just will surely see their destruction.
If you discipline your children, they will make your life easier
and refresh your soul.
Where there is no vision from God, the people run wild,
but those who adhere to God’s instruction know genuine happiness.
Words are not enough to correct a servant;
even if he understands, he will not respond.
Have you ever met someone who is overly eager to talk?
There is more hope for a fool than for him.
If you indulge your servant from early in life,
in the end it won’t go well for either of you.
A hot-head provokes quarrels,
and one mastered by anger commits all kinds of sins.
A person’s pride brings him down,
but one of humble spirit has a firm hold on honor and respect.
Anyone who teams up with a thief must despise his own life,
for he is bound by an oath to tell the truth and yet refuses.
If you fear other people, you are walking into a dangerous trap;
but if you trust in the Eternal, you will be safe.
Many people vie for special treatment from a ruler,
yet genuine justice proceeds from the Eternal.
The right-living are disgusted by the actions of the unjust;
likewise, the wicked are disgusted by the ways of the righteous.
The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 29 (The Voice)
[Psalm 29]
A song of David.
Give all credit to the Eternal, O heavenly creatures;
give praise to Him for His glory and power.
Give to the Eternal the glory due His name;
worship Him with lavish displays of sacred splendor.
The voice of the Eternal echoes over the great waters;
God’s magnificence roars like thunder.
The Eternal’s presence hovers over all the waters.
His voice explodes in great power over the earth.
His voice is both regal and grand.
The Eternal’s voice shatters the cedars;
His power splinters the great cedars of Lebanon.
He speaks, and Lebanon leaps like a young calf;
Sirion jumps like a wild, youthful ox.
The voice of the Eternal cuts through with flames of fire.
The voice of the Eternal rumbles through the wilderness
with great quakes;
He causes Kadesh to tremble.
The Eternal’s voice brings life from the doe’s womb;
His voice strips the forest bare,
and all the people in the temple declare, “Glory!”
The Eternal is enthroned over the great flood;
His reign is unending.
We ask You, Eternal One, to give strength to Your people;
Eternal One, bless them with the gift of peace.
The Book of Psalms, Poem 29 (The Voice)
[Psalm 10]
The Cry of the Oppressed
Lord, why do you seem so far away when evil is near?
Why have you hidden yourself when I need you the most?
The arrogant in their elitist pride persecute the poor and helpless.
May you pour out upon them
the very evil they’ve dreamed up against others!
How they brag and boast of their cravings, exalting the greedy.
They congratulate themselves as they despise you—
these arrogant ones, so smug and secure!
In their delusion the wicked boast, saying,
“God doesn’t care about what we do.
There’s nothing to worry about!”
So successful are they in their schemes
and prosperous in all their plans!
Your laws are far from them;
they scoff at their enemies.
They boast that neither God nor men will bring them down.
They sneer at all their enemies, saying in their hearts,
“We’ll have success in all we do
and never have to face trouble.”
Their mouths spew out cursing, lies, and threats.
Only trouble and turmoil come from all their plans.
Like beasts lurking in the shadows of the city,
they crouch silently in ambush, waiting for the innocent to pass by.
Pouncing on the poor, they catch them in their snare
to murder their prey in secret
as they plunder their helpless victims.
They crush the lowly as they fall beneath their brutal blows,
watching their victims collapse in defeat!
Then they say to themselves,
“The Lofty One is not watching while we do this.
He doesn’t even care! We can get away with it!”
Now arise, Yahweh-God! Crush them once and for all!
Don’t forget the helpless and oppressed.
How dare the wicked think they’ll reject God and escape judgment.
They say to themselves,
“God won’t hold me accountable.”
Lord, I know you see all that they’re doing,
noting their each and every deed.
You know the trouble and turmoil they’ve caused.
Now punish them thoroughly for all that they’ve done!
The poor and helpless ones trust in you, Lord,
for you are famous for being the helper of the fatherless.
I know you won’t let them down.
Break the power of the wicked and all their strong-arm tactics.
Search them out and destroy them
for the evil things they’ve done.
You, Yahweh, are King forever and ever!
All the nations will perish from your land.
Yahweh, you have heard the desires of the humble
and seen their hopes.
You will hear their cries and encourage their hearts.
The orphans and the oppressed will be terrified no longer,
for you will bring them justice, and no earth-dweller will trouble them again.
The Book of Psalms, Poem 10 (The Passion Translation)
[Psalm 30]
A song of David. For the dedication of the temple.
I praise You, Eternal One. You lifted me out of that deep, dark pit
and denied my opponents the pleasure of rubbing in their success.
Eternal One, my True God, I cried out to You for help;
You mended the shattered pieces of my life.
You lifted me from the grave with a mighty hand,
gave me another chance,
and saved me from joining those in that dreadful pit.
Sing, all you who remain faithful!
Pour out your hearts to the Eternal with praise and melodies;
let grateful music fill the air and bless His name.
His wrath, you see, is fleeting,
but His grace lasts a lifetime.
The deepest pains may linger through the night,
but joy greets the soul with the smile of morning.
When things were quiet and life was easy, I said in arrogance,
“Nothing can shake me.”
By Your grace, Eternal,
I thought I was as strong as a mountain;
But when You left my side and hid away,
I crumbled in fear.
O Eternal One, I called out to You;
I pleaded for Your compassion and forgiveness:
“I’m no good to You dead! What benefits come from my rotting corpse?
My body in the grave will not praise You.
No songs will rise up from the dust of my bones.
From dust comes no proclamation of Your faithfulness.
Hear me, Eternal Lord—please help me,
Eternal One—be merciful!”
You did it: You turned my deepest pains into joyful dancing;
You stripped off my dark clothing
and covered me with joyful light.
You have restored my honor. My heart is ready to explode, erupt in new songs!
It’s impossible to keep quiet!
Eternal One, my God, my Life-Giver, I will thank You forever.

Mon El’s role
So Supergirl has been very explicitly referencing the election this season. They’re not being even a little subtle. Supergirl’s America has a female president, and she says something about how she can’t believe anyone even voted for the other guy. I think they used the phrase “nasty woman” twice now. Thematically, they’re really trying to make it obvious.
And now we have the leaders of Daxam saying they need to “make Daxam great again,” with the response that “Daxam was never great.”
Here’s what I think that means thematically, and how I think Mon El factors into this particular message. The United States of Supergirl’s world has some issues, but they’re working specifically on protecting the aliens immigrating there. Between Lena and the president, we have strong female characters in positions of power. We also have Lyra, who is a refugee coming from a bad situation. So in Supergirl’s universe, America is not perfect, but getting better. It’s kind of going down the path that we wish the real US would start following.
And as for Daxam. After this week’s episode, the parallels between the current administration and Mon El’s parents moved from debatable to explicit. I think that Daxam is meant to represent the worst parts of our country- our past, what we could become under this administration, the growing nationalist mindset of “America first.” We may not have slavery anymore, but we did. And what we do have are undocumented immigrants being paid next to nothing while certain people claim that they’re the ones benefitting from the deal (see: Mon El’s mother talking about how they give their servants a better life). We also have a system where the very privileged benefit from the suffering of the lower and middle class (see: “...letting myself be propped up at the expense of our people”). Daxam is Trump’s America, in short. It is what we could become- what we’re in danger of becoming.
Which brings me to Mon El’s role to the overall theme here. Mon El isn’t heroic, initially. He was raised in a place where all this inequality was normalized, by parents who taught him that it was okay, where he benefitted from the system. And he did what most people do in that situation: nothing. He chose to turn a blind eye. He was afraid of his parents, afraid of confronting all the problems with his world, afraid of acknowledging what he was doing wrong. In the real flashback where he leaves Daxam, it seems clear that he knows that this is wrong. It also seems clear that he’s never done anything about it.
So he leaves Daxam, where he is privileged and ignorant and cowardly. He gets to this new place, with all these heroic people around him (see: my earlier post about this). One of the first things that happens is Kara calling him out, personally. This is when he starts being forced to confront what he took part in on Daxam. He moves from the Trump America Metaphor to the optimistic view of America. He doesn’t do a 180 flip or anything- it takes some time to to change and unlearn his upbringing on Daxam. And he makes a lot of mistakes while he’s trying to change, like lying and denying who he was and not listening. He even tries to defend Daxam and “the prince” at first, because he doesn’t want to admit who and what he was. Which was a spoiled, privileged guy who was too afraid to stand up for what was right.
So what’s the message here? What are they trying to get at? Well, here’s the thing. We’d all like to believe that we’re Kara, standing up for what’s right no matter what. Or that we’re Lena, willing to go against our families if they’re wrong. Or that we’re James, with the drive to do good and the desire to be a hero. Or that we’re Winn, continuing to do what’s right no matter how scared we are.
The fact of the matter is that not everyone is Kara. Many, many people are Mon El- unwilling to confront their privilege, scared to go against the majority, preferring to deny their part in the oppression of others. We see it all the time, every day, constantly. Mon El, as a written character, is calling people out- “See what you sound like? See what you’re doing? Watch this character make your mistakes, and then consider how you feel.”
On Daxam, like in our country under this administration, we can’t really afford to be bystanders. We can’t afford to be neutral, to refuse to take a stand, to just go on believing that we don’t have to do anything because someone else will. So when Mon El starts trying to change, clumsily and slowly and with a lot of help, here’s what the message is:
It’s not too late to be on the right side of history. It’s not too late to stand up.

Chapter 19 partner
I am a fool. When did I get so caught up, so confused, that I lost track of what is important? I know I have a tendency to obsess and lose my overview of the situation. But this... this was beyond stupid. This is my first conscious thought on waking, and it pushes me to my feet. Arduously. Painfully. Yes, and maybe that last bit of strength I need to get up comes from panic.
I think... maybe I did not escape the Gravity Room at all. I have to be inside still, with how hard it is to stand. Yet it doesn't matter whether it’s one gee, twenty gees, or a thousand. I’ll manage. I have to, though I suspect this is not my first try. You see, I have a vague recollection of a previous attempt being thwarted by that blue-haired vixen. But she’s not here now; I am out of the medical ward and hobbling into a hallway. Nothing stands in my way now; nothing but exhaustion, a broken body, and what should have been a laughable amount of gravity - Earth’s pull. In essence, nothing new.
Now, where am I again? I can’t seem to find my way in these corridors. Oppressive. Small. I turn and turn again, but at least I remember. This is not space, but Earth. Capsule Corp. Where was I going again? Oh yes; Gravity Room. Super Saiyan. I have dedicated myself to that goal. I have vowed to make it happen. Obtain it, force it, now that I know it’s possible. Not just believe, but know —  I’ve seen it with my own eyes, twice. So it’s not like there can only be one. And... it should be easy. I’ll be the legend, defeat Kakarot, be all I was meant to be. It was prophesied, it’s going to happen.
It should be easy, but so far it has proven to be anything but. In chasing after my goal I have lost sight of the track I’m on, my surroundings, and my own safety. What is wrong with me? Have I become so coddled and so sure that nothing can challenge me on this plush little planet that I would throw caution in the wind?
Disgusted with myself, I finally find a door to the outside world. Fresh air hits my face, clears my ringing head. It does little to lift my spirits; now I can truly take stock of the pathetic shape I am in.
“Oh, my!” I hear from one side, and it’s the mother.
I think that just this once I have to agree with her sentiment: my legs are shaking. Every step I take hurts. The walk from the house to the new GR feels so long. The woman built a new one while I was out, but how is that possible? Every broken memory I have of waking up had her at my side. It makes me anxious to find out how many days.. weeks... I have lost.
That’s right, human. I am on the mend. I was really bad off, this much I know. And of course there’s the other, more worrisome fact: I put myself in that position. Me, by my own hand. I am my own worst enemy.
So, yet another failure that leaves me with nothing to show for it and no way to continue. I left myself pathetically open for any attack, and how do you think those Z-fighters react? That’s right. More maddening, disgracing kindness. With my strength still a disappointment and my reliability at a new-time low, I’d have thought even these confusing creatures would tire of me. But no, they keep up their painfully obvious kindness like I haven't told them to fuck off.. how many times?
Did I tell you the scar-faced warrior was too weak to touch me? Well, he touched me. He carried me to medical, and he could have killed me twenty times over. Hell, he could have just left me and they would have been rid of me. Did I say the woman could not hurt me if she tried? Hn. I guess she can hurt me plenty without trying, or maybe that was me. Maybe she just provided me with that piece of rope and I hung myself…
No; I need not fear these people. They are not out to get me, as the woman shows me again when her face pops up on the console. It is odd to realise that the vixen’s screams come from some naive sense of ‘protecting me from myself’. Of course, during the process she also notifies anyone who might pick up on her messages about my sorry state. I wonder how many of Frieza’s forces are out there, listening to her broadcasts? They must be salivating at the thought.
“Oh, you missed a step, Vegeta. Feeling off balance?” She delights in pointing out my errors. Then, her mood takes a 180 degree turn as she angrily laments about the stupidity of Saiyans, and men in general.
Yet I am back on my feet and throwing punches again, lest any fool think they still have a chance at taking me down. You humans might be too addled in the brain to mount a decent assassination attempt, but I know for a fact that the stars are filled with less foolish  creatures. They missed their free shot though. I’m up. I’m fighting... Damn. I think I tore some stitches.
“There you go! Now you’re bleeding again, in three places. Very macho.” The woman quips in a too-airy staccato, like it hurts her to look at me.
She's right, but that is not the  reason I’m floundering. No; it has little to do with the damage my body has taken. Let’s face it, if there’s one thing Saiyans are good at it’s pushing through the pain. The panic that first caused my little mishaps in the previous GR has ebbed down to a dull throb of despair, and not even the knowledge that I’ve gotten another Zenkai boost helps my spirits.
Oh did I forget to mention, human, that   I was training at the same gravity Kakarot used when he ascended:  one hundred gees. One hundred and twenty, at one point. It should be as easy as snapping my fingers now to become a Super Saiyan. So far nothing has happened, no matter how much I power up. I’ll be honest; when I felt the GR tearing apart, I was nearly certain that my little adrenaline ride would be the final push. The final snap I’d need to transform… alas, it was not.
Why not? This Is ridiculous; I should be there! I have done everything. I have tried everything. Yet it’s obviously, maddeningly, not been enough. This is ludicrous, impossible, but perhaps it is time to admit that I have absolutely no idea how to attain Super Saiyan. I’ve tried everything I could think of, and it did not work. Pathetic.
No, I refuse to admit defeat. There is one other thing I can do. One thing that might — that has — to work. I need a second opinion, preferably from someone with a clear mind and skills in information gathering. Since I am apparently the guest of the ‘greatest mind on Earth’, I hardly need to look far to find such a genius brain to fix my dilemma. She’s screaming at me right now, in fact, something about alarms.
“Do you know what that sound is? That’s the life-sign alert , letting you know you’re dying..” As ever, she is such a drama queen.
“Woman, I have a job for you,” I say, then decide it would serve me better to keep our discussion private. “Bring your ass to the Gravity Room, and I’ll tell you what I want.”
That shuts her up, but only a moment. Then her confusionis replaced by anger that lashed out in full force. “If you think I’ll help you with your little suicide run, go fuck yourself.”
The monitor goes dark, and she’s gone. She’s finally stopped nagging me, and this is the one time I actually require her presence.  Why am I even surprised that she’d dare to talk back to me like that? The woman was barely intimidated by me before. Why should she suddenly fear me, now that her precious Goku has returned? He can squash me like a bug whenever he wants, because I am unable to ascend. And now, I’ve gone and upset his mistress.
Yes, let’s face facts: the  leader of their group was never Kakarot. That became obvious mere  moments after the fool’s return: Kakarot is not and never will be in charge of anything.
Which is, all things considered, a good thing. As much as he has proven to be an amazing fighter, he is... surprisingly clueless about everything else. Such ajarring fact; one would expect someone with such power to wield it like a king. But he seems as uninterested in doing so as his ‘friends’ seem uninterested in giving him proper homage that such strength should grant him.
My second guess had been that harpy married to Kakarot. She obviously scares the third-class; she definitely spends enough time ordering him around, and I understand she used to be a fighter before she retired. Yet it hardly adds up. It is possible that she is managing to hide her true power, yet she seems terribly weak. Also, the way that both Kakarot and his half-breed run off on her without any punishment in return convinces me there is little bite behind her bark.
No, it has to be that blue-haired woman who pulls the strings. She’s the one in control. Of course she is. It's Obvious, now I think about it. She and Kakarot go back a long time, and she can get every one of those weakling fighters to do her bidding. Follow the money. That’s what you humans say, right?
She may be in charge of everyone else, but I won't let her order me around. Just to prove it  I keep training for a another half-hour more. Although to call it ‘training’ is somewhat generous. I flounder about, tilting left and right under gravities I had long-since conquered, while the machine flashes red warning lights at my antics. At one point, the force returns to one gee, and it is a testament to my exhaustion that it takes me a few minutes to realise it. Now I’m not sure why I bothered. Trying to show how you can’t be bossed around is a lousy way to start negotiations.
And so we get to the crux of the matter: I have precious little few bargaining chips left, and the little lady is used to getting her way. Nonetheless, I will show her that I am in a higher caliber. I refuse to be bullied or buttered like her Z-floozies, and what she’ll get from me is a negotiation on equal terms. Yes, that would be a little less pathetic, I decide, as I turn off the GR and leave to seek her out. We’ll negotiate, and it’ll be a trade.
