yeah yeah riverdale has witches and time travel now, but remember season three? here are some things that happened on it
betty sees her two baby nephews float over a bonfire and starts convulsing.
archie gets sent to prison, fights in a clandestine boxing ring for rich people to enjoy, escapes to canada and gets mauled by a bear, which starts his emo arc.
everyone gets into a dnd knock off called griffins and gargoyles, and when you get to the end of it, you "ascend" (die).
ethel muggs gets so brainwashed by the game she gets sent to a convent that also worships the gargoyle king and she ships herself with him (and jughead (in which she tells betty they're going to be a ship)).
all girls in town experience seizures when talking about the gargoyle king. this is later explained to be due to the city's water being contaminated.
penny peabody (actual name) who in last season betrayed the serpents and got her tattoo removed with a knife, comes back to try and kill archie, but jughead's 11 year old sister shoots her with a slingshot.
they do heathers the musical for some reason and veronica DOESN'T play veronica, she plays heather mcnamara. also jughead doesn't play anyone on the musical but he sings with everyone else in the last song.
kevin keller, this show's kurt glee, joins a cult because he wants to hook up with cute guys and gets his kidney stolen.
toni and cheryl get kicked out of the serpents so cheryl gives toni her own sapphic archer gang.
cheryl's cunty mom kills betty's serial killer dad in front of her and nothing comes out of it.
veronica, who hates her dad and wants her mom to leave his ass, gets extremely distraught when they're about to get a divorce.
also she manages a diner.
and a secret bar underneath it.
evelyn evernever, who introduced herself as edgar evernever's daughter, him being the leader of a cult; is actually a 30-something woman who has a condition that keeps her looking like a teenager and steals people's organs to keep herself healthy.
also edgar isn't his father, he's his husband
betty tries to prevent her mother to sell their house by burning it. the house ends up fine but still wtf
the cliffhanger of this season had archie, betty and veronica burning their clothes and jughead's beanie, and it's implied they killed him. this actually wasn't planned, as cole sprouse didn't want to film a scene half naked in the middle of a cold forest at 3 am so the writers improvised.
they had no plans for this cliffhanger btw, they intended to write it on the go for next season.

magical school OC - Jace
Full Name: Jonathan Christopher "Jace" Herondale
Sex/Gender: Cis Male (Man - he/him)
Species: Half-(fire) Faerie, Half-Human (European American)
Age: 20 (born Jan. 18)
Class Level: Junior
Appearance (FC: Jamie Campbell Bower)
Jace is a 5'11" (1.8 m) young man. He has his father's handsome facial features & his mother's curling golden blond hair. His eyes were brown until his dealings with Victor, which turned them an eerie golden color. Though he has lighter skin, it's tanned from frequent work in the sun. His body is somewhat lean, yet toned. There's a few fading scars across his shoulders & torso, some of which are covered by tattoos of birds. He prefers to wear close-fitting, simple things that can easily fit under his armor for quick changes--like t-shirts, henleys, jeans, cargo pants, etc.
Personality
Those who do not know Jace well, especially those meeting him for the first time, often believe him to be arrogant, uncaring & generally rude. This is probably because he's about solving problems quickly by taking action rather than standing around & talking. Also, he doesn't talk to many people outside his family & small friend group unless they introduce him to others. He's not introverted; he doesn't put much effort into making friends. Those who know him know that Jace tries to hide his sadness behind snide remarks. These are different from the witty comments he usually makes. He's very loyal to those he loves, throwing himself into danger or even lying to them if he thinks it would keep them safe. He is always ready to play hero, partly because he feels like a weapon. Still, there's mischief, romance & passion in him if you manage to find it. He frequently dances between light & dark magic, unable to consciously choose one or the other.
History
He was stolen from his biological parents when he was a baby, to be raised by a man named Victor Meridian until he turned 10. Victor claimed to be his father, giving him food & a place to live, but he often cruelly tested the boy. Long story short, Jace was trained to fight monsters from a young age & he lived in isolation for a relatively long time. Victor also used experimental magic on him, which mostly just resulted in pain. Unbeknownst to him, he'd gain a connection to the god Apollo, but all that seemed to happen was that his brown eyes turned golden. Then, Victor faked his death, leaving enough clues for Jace to find his way back to his parents & their monster-slaying community. When he got older, he learned that those people used to be part of a radical cult led by Victor, one that sought to worship the gods, exterminate the faerie & do new magical experiments to enslave the monsters they'd usually hunt. While Jace continues to try & enjoy life among his people, he's constantly wondering when Victor will pop up again. He is rooming with his friend Alex, one of the Lexington twins (he's close with both) & he's gone on a few dates with the earth witch Christina by the 5th week of school. It's his first year in the school--he's just been moved up because of his age & skill.
Skills/Abilities
advanced hunting - he's better at physical fighting than casting spells (in fact, he has a problem doing the latter)
weapon summoning - Jace's sword comes out of him, as it's a part of his soul; when he's disarmed, he can "call" it back to him
slight enhancement - he tends to be stronger & faster than other hunters in his class, but it's not on an incredibly noticeable level
Hobbies
playing the piano - it makes him feel weirdly "close" to Victor, though he won't admit it. He has a favorite book of music.
reading poetry - he can recite a couple of Shakespeare & Wilde's poems; he's often reading in the mornings
Extra
sometimes he hears Apollo's voice in his head, advising him on strategy, whether in a fight, class, or conversation. Jace writes it off as him having a weird conscience.
he's mostly adjusted to being around others, but he still counts the number of exits & possible weapons whenever he enters a room.
he has a lot of nightmares, which he wakes up from crying quietly.
before entering the school, he flirted with many people without having long-term relationships.

can I request what would happen if we summon them while we're on human realm bc we missed them so much but lose so much blood in the process I don't really know I'm a sucker for these kind of things. thank youu!!
EDIT FROM FUTURE OP: This ask has been sitting in my drafts for months half finished and I finally found the motivation to finish. Anon, I’m so sorry for the wait. You’re a sweetheart ❤️ I was only able to do the three eldest though and I’m so sorry!!
Um hello??? I love this so much thank you!!! I thought it was kind of silly to go through all of that at the end of season 2 to just.... not use it so I’m excited about this!!!! (Sorry if this is too angsty my brain got super pumped about this and took off.
PS the request said “we” so I used a reader insert type of style. Hope that’s what you were looking for :)
MC Summons Their Demon, but at What cost?
Trigger warning!!!! Self harm/blood
How long had it been since you’d seen the him? Weeks? Months? Who knows. They all blended together after while. All you knew is that it had been too long. Why was this all so tedious? Solomon had promised to teach you the summoning ritual as soon as you could handle it. Why hadn’t he done so? Did he not trust you? Was he purposely keeping you away from the them? Surely you were strong enough at this point. Enough with the waiting. You wouldn’t sit around and any longer! You needed to see them. You needed to see him.
You flipped messily through book after book. Solomon had given you many to study for your apprenticeship. There had to be something about summoning in one of these!
“Hmm..”
You carefully read through the worn pages of one of the larger and dustier tomes. Something about this one called to you. You zoned out as you took in the information on the pages, following context clues until you found what you were looking for. The images drawn on the page seemed foreign and surprised you. A summoning circle? You had expected as much, but the repeated mentions of ‘sacrifice’ and ‘blood oath’ seemed ancient and outdated. You couldn’t help but notice there was no mention of sentimental possessions of the demon you were trying to summon as well. You were sure none of the brothers would suggest a summoning if it were dangerous though...
Out of options and out of patience, you gathered your courage and set up the ritual to the best of your ability. Things seemed to match the books instructions, at least. All that was left was the blood. You stepped into the middle of the circle and closed brought a sewing needle to the top of your finger. The book hadn’t specified the amount of blood needed, but it was better to start small, you reasoned. You closed your eyes and pricked it, quickly squeezing a single drop of blood into the center of the circle, and said the name of the person you had been desperate to see.
Lucifer
The day of the summoning, Lucifer had felt this nagging sense of danger from the moment he opened his eyes. He was so sure it was one of his brothers about to cause trouble for him once again.
Lucifer spent the day preparing for the worst. Had Mammon stolen something of vast importance? Did Levi buy another piece of cursed media? Surely Beel hadn’t eaten a poisonous dish??
That evening, tired from being on edge all day, he had retired to his study, hoping some music would help calm his nerves. He settled into his chair and closed his eyes.
Then came the pull.
It had been ages since he had felt a sensation like this. When was the last time someone had tried to summon him? Hundreds of years ago, it had to be. And it never felt as strong as this force pulling him now.
There had once been a cult of devil worshipers who sacrificed many of their members for a chance to pull him to the human world, quite surprised to find out their sacrifices had been in vain, considering Lucifer wasn’t interested in a bunch of worthless humans. But even then the tug hadn’t been this strong. Sure, he could still resist it, but the strength of it still left him awestruck. Who had the power to call to him like this?
“Lucifer!”
His blood ran cold. Immediately, he stopped resisting the call and gave in, allowing the summoning to take place.
You had done it. Lucifer was here! The strongest and most fearsome of the seven, and you had Summoned him to you. Your heart swelled when you though of how impressed he’d be when he found out you had done it all on your own. Would he praise you? Would he tease you? Would he tilt his head and smirk, then ask you if you had really missed him that much?
You smiled softly, looking up at him. The look on his face wasn’t one of pride. His eyebrows had furrowed and a frown creased deep into his face. Was he angry at you? No... you had seen his anger many times. This wasn’t it.
“MC....what have you done?”
He cradled you softly in his arms. Wait. When had he picked you up? You looked at your surroundings, the fear in the pit of your stomach ever growing. Where had all this blood come from? You had only pricked your finger! Lucifer’s hand touched your cheek, pulling your face back to him.
“Don’t look.”
You had no choice but to obey. You simply didn’t have the strength to move anymore.
“I’ve called for help, it’ll be just a moment, MC. Just keep your eyes on me.”
Lucifer’s voice was soft and soothing, and you felt your tired body relax into his hold.
“I did it... I brought you here... I did it...” you closed your eyes, a smile on your lips.
“MC, keep your eyes open. Look at me. MC! MC!”
Mammon
That day had started out much the same as always. Mammon, still sore from last nights punishment, groaned as he slumped into his desk at RAD. He rested his head in his arms against the desk, and glanced at the seat that used to belong to you. Obviously, you weren’t there, but it didn’t hurt to check....
“MC is still in the human world, Mammon.”
Mammon jumped and sat up straight in his seat, his cheeks red from being caught.
“I know that Belphie! I was just-just uh zonin’ out! MC’s old seat just happened to be in the same direction!” He stuttered out an excuse.
“Just call them, Mammon. I’m sure MC would be happy to hear your voice.”  Oh great, now Beel’s getting involved too. He knew his brothers meant no harm, but all this talk about MC was getting him riled up!
“Fine! I will! I’ll call MC tonight! and you two AREN’T invited!” Mammon laid his head down once again, this time hiding his face, not wanting his blush to show a second time. Tonight he’d finally hear MC’s voice again. And he could blame Beel and Belphie for the call!
Come dinner time, Mammon had just about run out of patience. His head kept telling him to wait just a bit longer, but something in his heart was yelling for him to quit dragging his feet.
“I’m going to my room and NOBODY better interrupt me, ya hear?!” Mammon stumbled to his feet and started marching to his room, six pairs of eyes staring at him questioningly. He only made it a few steps when he felt it. A tug. He closed his eyes and swayed on his feet, dizzy from the force of it. This was a summoning, wasn’t it? He had felt it plenty of times from those damn witches, but something about this was different. He turned around to look his brothers again, a look of confusion on his face.
“I...think I’m bein’ summoned.”
Levi snorted and crossed his arms. “I’m sure you’re guilty of something. Better just get it over with.”
The rest of the brothers mumbled in agreement.
Except Lucifer.
Lucifer quickly pushed out his chair and hurried to Mammon. Something was wrong. A simple summoning wouldn’t have this effect on a demon of Mammon’s stature.
The pull came once again, stronger this time. Mammon winced and held his hand to his aching head. Lucifer’s hand came down to rest on his shoulder
“I don’t know how long I can resist this. Somethin’ isn’t right. Lucifer, what’s happening to me?” He looked to his brother for help, and found the rest of them had gathered around as well, a look of concern on all of their faces.
“Someone call for Diavolo and Barbatos. Mammon, hold on just a few more moments.” Lucifer commanded.
Mammon would have agreed, if not for the voice that rang out clearly in his head, calling his name.
“Mammon!”
Mammon’s eyes snapped open and stopped resisting the pull, hearing the shouts from his brothers disappear as he followed the call.
“Mammon! Mammon! Mammon Mammon Mammon! Please!” You couldn’t keep this up for much longer, you knew it. You had fallen to your knees moments after the initial call. You could feel every drop of blood flowing out of the pin prick on your finger, but you didn’t dare give up. You had come this far, and you wouldn’t give up now. Not until you had to.
But you didn’t have to. A flash of light blinded you momentarily, and when you could see again, there he was. Standing there was the Mammon. Relief flushed through your entire body, and you stopped pouring your magic into the spell. Utterly exhausted, your body came crashing forward, landing in front of his feet.
Mammon quickly slid to his knees on the ground, picking you up off the floor and resting your head in his lap.
“You....Are you okay, MC?” Mammon tried to keep his voice even and steady, not wanting to scare you, but his hands that held too tightly and his body that quivered gave him away.
“I am now.” You answered quietly, unsure if it was true. At least Mammon was here and holding you in his arms. Things would be okay as long as he was with you.
“You...You idiot! Stupid! What the heck were ya thinkin’!? Can’t you see how much blood you’ve lost? This isn’t how you’re supposed to be summoning us! I’m gonna kill that damn sorcerer!” Mammon felt his blood boil with each second that passed. How Could Solomon have allowed this?
You softly squeezed his hand, not having the energy to yell for his attention. Immediately, he stopped, looking at you questioningly.
“Solomon didn’t teach me this. He wouldn’t. But.... I just couldn’t wait any longer. I needed to see you.” You answered.
He frowned deeply, more troubled with this answer. You had done all this just to see him? He felt a lump in his throat form. “I would have come to you. You didn’t have to do this.” He pressed his forehead to yours, closing his eyes to stop any tears from escaping.
You cupped his cheek, returning the affection he so rarely showed. “S’okay. All that matters is you’re here now. I just...need....to rest....a little...” Your eyes fluttered closed, feeling at peace and calm in your love’s arms.
Panic. Once again, Mammon’s eyes snapped open. He placed his hand over yours, trying to gently coax you into opening your eyes once more.
“Not yet, you can’t yet, MC. We have to wait for help to come. Come on, wake up.” He knew his brothers would come. Someone would come. They wouldn’t let this happen to you. He wouldn’t let this happen to you. “MC!” When gentle touches didn’t work, he got rougher, shaking you and yelling, desperate to see your eyes open.
“Enough playin’ around MC! Wake up! WAKE UP, DAMMIT! Wake... Wake up...You have to..... Wake up....”
Leviathan
To say that Levi was missing his MC was like saying humans like air. Is it true? Yeah, but kind of an understatement. Humans needed air to live and breathe, and in his eyes, you were air. It’s no secret that Levi wasn’t exactly popular. One might even say it was well known that he was a dorky loner demon, if they were feeling particularly sassy. Being a loner has it’s advantages, like having more time for gaming and anime binging, but it sure is, well, a lonely once you’ve had someone to share your passions with. And once that someone is gone, their absence weighs heavy.
So yes, Levi was missing MC. So what? Everyone was missing MC. Why wouldn’t they? His MC was a ray of sunshine in a world of darkness. Ugh. That line sounder way cooler when the hero in his latest otome had said it. Of course his thoughts couldn’t sound that cool. But that’s not the point! Levi figured he had no right to complain about MC being gone, because he was just a gross, annoying, worthless otaku. He didn’t deserve to miss them. He was lucky he got to spend as much time with them as he did, really.
But nobody could blame him for thinking these thoughts, right? Thinking about how much he missed the way MC would cram themselves as close to him as possible to get a look at whatever mobile game he was playing was harmless. So was remembering all the nights they’d spent binging anime and then realizing the sun was up, smiling sheepishly at each other and promising not to stay up so late next time, even though they always did. Okay, so maybe  thinking about the way they looked when they were fresh out of his shower, smelling of his soap and shampoo was less than innocent, but what was he supposed to do!? Leaning your damp head on his shoulder and curling up close to him like that! Doing things like that is bad for an otaku’s heart! You might give them hope or something...
Enough was enough! He didn’t have time to be obsessing over how much he missed MC. It was taking time away from his one and only true love. “Ruri-Chan, you’d never abandon me right? No, I know you wouldn’t. You’re not like that.” Levi began speaking to his latest figure. “Not to say MC IS like that! No, of course their not! They didn’t have a choice!” He stuttered out a quick fix to his hurtful words. He was glad they weren’t around to hear, but it still felt wrong to say. He was quiet for a minute, staring at his floor in shame. Slowly, he lifted his eyes back to the figure. “Do you think they miss me like I miss them?”
And then he felt it. It had been so long, but he knew this feeling. This was a summoning, wasn’t it?! Based on the intense tug he felt, it had to be a super powerful sorcerer or maybe a group of basic magic users? Honestly, he was flattered. Someone wanted to summon HIM? No, They must have made a mistake. Surely this summon was meant for one of his brothers.
Leviathan was so lost in his own self pity he missed the first two calls of his name. The third one, sounding so desperate and pleading, snapped him out of his funk in an instant. He knew that voice. Without hesitation he let the summon take him, and there he was. He was finally reunited with MC.
But it wasn’t supposed to be like this. When he finally saw them again, he was supposed to feel elated and whole again, not like a piece of his heart was ripped right out of his chest. But when he locked eyes with them, surrounded by blood and their eyes looking glassy, that’s exactly what he felt.
“MC! Oh no. Oh no.”
Levi. He was here. He had to be. You heard his voice and felt his presence, felt his arms circle around you and cradle you tightly against his chest. But why couldn’t you see him? And why did you feel so… empty?
“Levi? That’s you isn’t it? Why is it so dark?” Had the candles all gone out? No, even before you lit them, you remember it hadn’t been this dark. Something was wrong.
Levi inhaled shakily, holding back the sobs he desperately wanted to release. “MC, what are you talking about? I’m right here! Can’t you see me?”
Like a bolt of lighting, the realization hit you. It wasn’t dark. The candles hadn’t gone out. It was your eyes.
“No, Levi. I can’t. I can’t see you. I can’t see anything.” You shakily reach your hand up, frantically feeling around for your love’s face. Leviathan’s usual timid nature word have normally had him reeling away, but in this moment, he had no reservations as he helped guide your hand to his cheek. His lips trembled as he fought the urge to scream.
“MC…. Why would you do this? You’ve lost so much blood… and.. and your sight? I’m not worth this. I’m just a useless otaku! It isn’t fair!” His tears began to flow, the guilt of it all was ripping him apart.
You closed your eyes and smiled as you remembered the many faces of this man you had called to you. “It was worth it. I did it because I love you, Levi. I need you. After all, what good is a Henry without his lord?”

Welcome To Grail Academy - Chapter Fifteen: Destroy Everything You Touch
“The Hedge Witches did more than push drugs and send empty threats to City Hall. The woman who ran it all, Kuro, she was a genius. A scientist before her time. She invented the serum for Boost, 4 different profitable versions of it to sell to the markets, she even made breakthroughs in Grimm biology and gene-splicing. But she was….flawed, in her own rights. She was addicted to her research. She thrived on Boost. She became enraptured with her experiments on Grimm genealogy  and its connection to dust. So much so, that she began to experiment on herself. Because of it, she was discredited as a scientist, all her work either stolen by the government or destroyed. And losing her practice made her desperate.” Madehold turned away from the window and made a motion at her secretary to leave the room and close the door. She did, and the headmaster immediately reached under her desk and poured herself another glass of a different kind of liquor.
She took a swig before saying, “Sable is what happens when human genes injected with heaploads of Boost mate with Grimm DNA. And I mean that in the most literal sense.” Then she knocked the rest of the drink back. “She is Kuro’s daughter, she leads the Hedge Witches now.”
The students in the room stood in shocked silence, mostly because they were still processing all of the information. Esmerelda had to sit herself down in the admittedly tacky beanbag just so her feet wouldn’t give out beneath her. “….What do they want with Yorick?” In response to her question, Madehold pulled a manilla folder out from her desk drawer and slid it across the table to Esmerelda. “Everything you need to know is in his file.”
Name: Yorick Navyn
Age: 16
Gender: M
Caretaker: Azora Navyn (Note: Azora Navyn retired hunter, graduate of Atlas Academy, Grandmother to Yorick)
Semblance Description: self-combustion (Note: unstable)
Registered Weapon: Dual-wield revolvers / firework launchers (Asterion and Chara)
Educational History: Academy of Early Learning, Atlas Public School
GPA: 3.5
Assigned Team: EBNY
Notes: history of property damage and harm to others due to semblance, see incidents 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B
Incident 1A: vehicle collision (cause of parental deaths) show no signs of road struggle but extensive evidence pointing towards fire damage, possibly from semblance
Incident 1B: Navyn (age 3) found at scene of accident, retaining no injuries from crash or from fire
Incident 2: destruction of science lab of Atlas Public School, collapse of entire east wall, signs point to explosive chemicals combined with semblance-activated heat
Incident 2B: Navyn (age 14) once again found at scene, retaining no injuries, pleads claims of amnesia and blackouts
“His semblance is one of the most powerful that we’ve seen. His grandmother had it too, at least when she still worked as a hunter. Apparently the power is inherited, passed down. I assume that would be useful to the Hedge Witches on many levels.” Esmerelda flipped through the papers in the file until she got to a small, wallet-sized photo of her partner in his middle school uniform. She pulled it out from under the paper clip and hid it in her pocket. “Why do you know so much about this?” Nico asked, still petting Bernard’s head in his lap.
Madehold let out another long sigh, rubbing her templed while she attempted to word what she was about to say as delicately as she could. They could all see it on her face, she was struggling to even speak. “….Sable and I were very close.”
There is an abandoned church near the border of Calicem, with dusty stained glass windows and dramatic pointed pillars. It is a large monument that has long gone unused, originally built in devotion for some obscure deity that nobody bothered to worship. The heavy oak doors swung open and a girl with short blonde hair strutted inside, the breastplate of her armor reflecting multicolored light from the windows. Walking down that long carpeted aisle, past the tables and desks that replaced the pews of the temple, she grinned and quickly hugged another girl standing beside one of the bureaus, this one with much longer and darker hair. Her metal boots clanked against the wood floor panels, and twelve uniforms filed in after her. They all carried crates under their arms, awaiting instructions. “I used to lead the field scouts for the Hedge Witches. I worked under Kuro.”
They were again left speechless, all of them seeking to connect the dots between this new information. Madehold stared out the colossal window behind her, knocking the rest of her drink back and running her finger along the rim of the glass. “I had nowhere else to go, Kuro took me in off the street. But that was years ago, long before Grail Academy even existed. Why would Sable resurface now…?” She drifted off before she could finish her thought.
“Wait wait wait,” Nico raised his hand, “Can we back it up to the part about the headmaster of our school being part of a drug-dealing cult? Are we just not going to talk about that?” Madehold continued to watch the clocktower out the window, grumbling “I was young and naive. It was a long, long time ago.” No one else in the room was speaking, and it was beginning to freak Nico out. “Am I the only one concerned about this!?” Esmerelda finally piped up, interjecting.
“Nico, shush. I’m thinking.”
“But-”
“Shh.”
“But I-”
“Hush!” She waved a dismissive hand, and Nico crankily folded his arms and slouched down. Esmerelda stood up (struggling to roll out of the beanbag chair) and adjusted the collar on her fur coat that was slipping off her shoulders. “Whatever you did in the past does not concern me. What concerns me is what you’re going to do now. My partner is missing, and you seem to know an awful lot about who took him. So how are you going to get him back?”
Madehold placed the empty glass down on the windowsill. “Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do right now, except file a Missing Persons report with the authorities and notify his family.”
“Bullshit!”
“Miss Versailles.”
“No! This is your job, and you won’t even try to look for him!”
“I have no idea where the Hedge Witches could be, they move bases so often. Yorick could be anywhere by now.”
“You’re scared.”
“I can’t help you. I’ll have Miss Pearl and Professor Kismet set up a campus patrol to keep an eye out for anything suspicious, and start a curfew for the students. That’s the extent of my power.”
The three of them left her office with Bernard’s bulky arms hanging over Esmerelda and Nico’s shoulders, half-dragging him down the hall. He insisted that he could walk on his own, but they were less than convinced when his eyes glazed over every time he stopped talking. “Now what? Are we supposed to wait and see what the cops can turn up?” Nico asked, disgruntled.
“No,” Esmerelda huffed, “Madehold is a coward. We take care of this ourselves. We’ll lay low for a bit, until things die down. Then we start our own search.”

So i finally finished SOV - i mean the main story - and it was...
well at first when i got the game my expectations were rather low even with the good reviews fellow friends gave to the game so i was definitely surprised, in the good way. SOV feels like an old FE, as in it’s kind of subtle about things like humor - eons away from the ham fisted “humour” of Felicia stumbling and dropping plates or something - and characterisation, as in everyone had its own character and wasn’t simply a trope, which i appreciated a lot. Support convos were meaningful, brought backstory (for the ones i did) but not in an infodump way.
So that felt “old” in the good - classical - way, but when a friend who played first FE8 to Fates saw me playing he was like “nah i don’t like this” and well, I can’t really tell him to fig off but the mechanics are, well, not archaic nor outdated, but can be quite frustrating. Maybe it’s just me or I didn’t forge my weapons enough, but Leon/Python by the endgame were locked to perpetual 60ish% of hit and a lot of tiles in the last maps five stupid avoid like +20% which is frustrating. Of course you’re supposed to use mages, because they don’t suffer from the defensive tiles but it’s annoying that you can’t “reliably” destroy things with your mounted archers.
OTOH if 5 range had 100% hit it’d be broken as, idk, a 2 weight tome with 30 might.
But i can understand the “meh” factor coming from those hit rates, mages are paper thin - again it’s good for balance - but for someone who came out of Fates/Awakening it can be disturbing, especially since the speed stat (on the screen) doesnt’ take into account the actual speed you have, as in the tome weights a little bit so in the end you can be doubled.
But I’d say it’s just a habit to take. I was afraid of the hp drain mages had when they use magic but it’s not really that bothering since you end up with a lot of rings, it’s actually more bothersome on healers - Tatiana couldn’t spam fortify she had to be healed because the ring doesn’t recover enough hp - but otherwise it’s cool, besides clerics were actually useful as in they could heal AND fight with Nosferatu, even if Nosfe-tanking isn’t wise because of the low accuracy.
Lack of WTA wasn’t that debilitating, OTOH it felt a bit redundant, i don’t know how to say it but WTA gave more “thrill” or something, here you can send Terror!Kamui in a forest and everyone will miss because of his high avoid and nothing else will make this change (of course in this setting Duma goons are dead). Granted, horseslayers are still a thing to look for (clive learnt it :’( ) and you have skills against certain foes, like the steel lance gives armor slayer or something?
About skills, well they were, imo, well implemented. You can’t double attack with them so they’re not totally broken (save for Alm’s double lion but) and kind of cool.
But what I loved the most was the magic tree, as in everyone learns different magic and not at the same level so it kinds of makes you want to use everyone or at least complementary units, Delthea hits hard and fast, but she doesn’t have the 3 range Thunder spell Mae has (even if Mae doesn’t hit that hard, she doesn’t have Ragnarok but she’s still a super good unit, at least in this run). Sonya doesn’t get Seraphim (i wonder why lol) but she can rewarp, and has Excalibur. The male mages were a kind of letdown though (i was dumb and promoted Kliff to archer, Tobin to mage) even if the Sagittarius spell is rad, they’re nowhere near the level of the priestesses. Even the Saints are all useful, Silque has Warp, Faye has Rescue and Tatiana got Fortify and physic (like Faye), Genny can’t warp but she has Physic, that spell to remove low level monsters and she can summon randoms.
To end this quickly, while the gameplay can be a bit annoying (low hit rates) it’s very fun to play, or at least to test. The map design is meh (endless meadow with some forests and fort) but that’s coming from a “faithfum” remake so it’s to be expected.
Dungeon crawling was - tedious in the last dungeons but wait i still have the optional one damn everyone is hungry - really captivating, you had to watch over your food reserves, find a shrine to save, smash enemies and pots and sometimes hunt for treasure. Honestly, i really liked it. It felt very RPG like!
Naga Mila bless the turnwheel - that thing saved me so many soft resets and I hope it’ll be a staple in the series from now on, maybe pretend that the fire emblem in jugdral was stolen by azel in the prologue and it has this role in jugdral echoes, idk something like that.
Plot wise... well it’s old FE for you, with a compelling story, it isn’t trying too hard like the other 3DS entries and you can feel the lore around like the omnipresence of Mila’s church with people going on pilgrimages or the Duma faithful not being seen as an evil only cult, unlike the Grimleal, but it has normal persons in it - who are eons away from Jedah and his schemes but still part of the religious order like Tatiana (even if quite frankly without her the Faithful would have been an “evil cult” like Loptyr’s one, complete with the guy who tried to stop the evil new leader and was banished (not killed here) in return). Randoms in villages live, they want to fish, to farm, they’re afraid of bandits, they gossip and all...
However, I feel as if the last parts - chapter 4 and 5 - were kind of rushed. Of course chapter 4 has Rudolf’s master plan (tm) so it’s meh in essence, but Celica holds the idiot plot ball even if, well, Jedah is a cunning bastard and her struggles are real, she set on her journey to free Mila so she’ll do anything to save Mila.
Which actually makes me a bit doubtful about chapter 5 where we’re supposed to understand that men don’t need gods/dragons anymore, Clive (or is it Lukas?) tells Alm that without dragons people will starve and all, but he’s all “we will find a way i know it will be hard” like, of course with Duma being mad there is no way things can continue like this, but are people really okay with having to work on a barren land? Isn’t it the problem Zofia had in the beginning of the game, everyone was hungry and then Rigel attacked? It makes me think about FE5 and Dagda, he and Gomez are toiling the barren lands of Thracia and doesn’t bear any fruits, the reason why Gomez returns to banditry, and this is a problem but everything is magically solved when Leif becomes king because in Dagda’s ending we learn that somehow things managed to grow. Yay?
But Valencia will exist by the time Chrom rolls in, so the peasants magically managed to harvest their barren lands without the power of the dragons, yay for them too.
Also Alm wants to kill/seal/put duma to sleep because his power makes people grow mad, but as the narrator put it in the credits (and something Alm forgot) even without Duma people will still thirst for power and do stupid things. Granted it’s not as stupid as burning the only person who loved you into a witch, but it leads you to murder helpless children in a bid to sit on the Zofian throne. So that really made me frown - not in the puzzled way but in the bad way, why is Duma painted as so evil, his power is evil etc? I loved that scene in the temple (Mila vs rudolf) because Mila wasn’t portrayed at sometihng Emmeryn like, she was furious, kind of distrubing/scary and well, you could understand that she will fight/will kill you if she wants, even if she is suposed to be the earth mother, loving etc.
Duma? Nope, nothing to show that he cares or has compassion, he is a dastard who might be mad, only interested with power and turns people into evil people. This is something that distrubs me because Duma isn’t something like Loptyr, evil for the sake of being petty, he was supposed to watch over the humans just like Mila did, hell people were supposed to thrive and be somewhat happy, not crazed. If he is a dastard who only thrives for power and gives powers to people who offer their daughters to be changed into witches, why people worshipped him for hundred of years? We’re not talking about fanatics like Jedah or his army of blue people, but Tatiana, the random villagers, etc...? Heck even Fates tried to paint Anankos as a “good” guy before he turned sour, but nothing for Duma?
:’(
But even if I rant a bit, IMO Echoes is the best 3DS FE, even with its wonky hit rates and rewarping witches. Plot is here, gameplay is fun (i wanted to try to forge so many things) and dungeon crawling is rad. I’d definitely recommend it to friends who can look past the wonky hit rates. It isn’t “classic FE gameplay” but it’s enjoyeable nonetheless, and the voice acting is really good. Usually i wouldn’t care, but this is really nice and i hope it will return.
