“Angor Reborn” is my favorite Trollhunters’ book.

Just imagine a screen adaptation of this book.  It would have been the best episode of Trollhunters by far

The dialogues between Jim and Angor Rot are fantastic. The fight was fantastic. And Angor Rot is a great character.

The best part of this fight is that Angor Rot never wanted to kill Jim.  Not here. Damn i feel sorry for Angor because Morgana screwed him up (he hate her and Gunmar with burning passion btw).

Hi there! What ways do you think Jim and Angor Rot are similar, and what ways do you think are different?

Jim and Angor Rot are similar in that they don't have a choice in what Destiny makes of them. Jim is bound by the amulet and Merlin, Angor to his ring and Morgana. In reality they're slaves to Destiny. Also they are pretty well matched, neither of them underestimates the other and there's even a little respect from both sides despite being antagonists.

However, while Angor Rot eventually caves to being controlled and becomes a living weapon bound to Morgana's will, forgetting who he is in the process, Jim doesn't give in or give up. He fights for what's right, not what Merlin wants. He keeps his humanity, even when he loses it physically.

They both act as incredible foils for one another and I desperately wish we'd seen more of that in Canon. I think the novel adaptation Angor Reborn does really well in showing how similar Angor Rot and Jim are. As well as how they're very different.

I don't care if Trollhunters books are canon or no, they are so good. Many parts of the books are better than the series.

Angor Reborn is the best book. The dynamic and chemistry between Angor and Jim was crazy. Their fight was incredible. When Angor said that Jim is the better hunter....wow! And the moonlight armor? So cool!

Even Gunmar is good. Still a scary character, but he has fears and weaknesses. The characters in general and the interactions are well written.

There are also so many characters i wanted to see in the series. Skarlagk, daughter of Orlagk, is one of them. She team up with Jim in the darklands to kill Gunmar and she sacrificed herself to save him. Damn this storyline was so interesting...

Also, the evil Trollhunter who hate Merlin and his life lol

Hi there! I got a question for you. In what way do you think Angor Rot and Jim Lake are similar, and what ways do you think they are different?

Wow, that's quite a curious ask! And I find it a bit ironic because Angor Reborn is the only additional Trollhunters book I read properly (was really lucky to get this one from my foreign friend). I feel those differences and similarities are touched beautifully there.

So Jim and Angor are similar in that they are both heroes of trollkind and protector figures. They both fought against Gunmar. They both have their own sense of honor. And they both hit the wall at some point, feeling that they might not be enough to defeat the enemy. In the moment of despair they both come to the magic-user (Merlin and Morgana respectfully), hoping to get the so-much-needed help - and both got either manipulated or tricked into losing a part of themselves.

And that is the part where differences began. Angor gives up, becoming a slave to Morgana's will - to the point of failing to notice that he got free at some point. He also looks for validation of his way, trying to force Jim to drop his human morals (as that one is meaningless for a troll and a puppet of the wizard).

Jim, on the other hand, refuses to do that. He might have changed physically, but his soul and beliefs stayed the same. Even Angor admitted in the end that Jim is better as both troll and hunter.

I was linking a friend this yesterday to find it had disappeared. In the name of stopping a very niche bit of Trollhunters additional content vanishing into the ether I'm uploading this here as well.

While out of print now there were a series of additional non-canon Trollhunters stories released by Richard Ashley Hamilton. If you're after them ebay is your best bet though the prices can be horrendous. There's also a rarer 3Below book called Arcadia-Con which is even harder to track down if you're in the hunting mood.

ANYWAY one of those books was this one, Angor Reborn:

While unsure about Arcadia-Con all the Trollhunters books had the same cover artist, Patrick Ian Moss. Angor Reborn is unique in that we know of not just one but two versions of a rejected cover and is the only one of the series that is a match timeline wise.

Ok so finally here's my opinion about the Jim/Troll!Jim situation

I'm gonna try to be fast so maybe i will left a few details

First of all what i think about him becoming a Troll?

I think it was a great twist, not many shows are brave enough to make a whole almost permanent change in the MCs like TH did, Amphibia, The Owl House, Gravity Falls, Avatar, etc. I can't think of many shows where at the end the mc is forced to sacrifice his humanity and his normal life in order to gain a bigger power enough to save the people he loves (not to mention the bathtub scene is actually a MASTERPIECE of scene) hell even 3Below and Wizards didn't do this

Could have been executed better? Mmm maybe if Jimhunters was actually a Part 1/2 episode and Angor Reborn was adapted so we could have more screentime to Tol boi and his development

Do i think what Merlin did was right? I'm gonna be kinda gray but he was and at the same time not right, he destroyed Jim's life since the moment the amulet was held into his hands or should i say the peak of the iceberg (cause everything went downhill since Angor's debut) but at the same time he got a point, Jim's humanity was his biggest help it was his heart what tied into all the people he helped and who helped him, but that wasn't enough, his humanity started being his weakness by the end of Season 2 if Jim battled a whole Gumm-Gumm army + Gunmar + Angor + Morgana yeah he definetly couldn't have make it, Angor only died cause he sacrificed himself, Morgana was throw into another dimension and not exactly killed and Gumm-Gumms were gone along with Gunmar, but almost all of that was possible thanks to Jim's sacrifice, damn even one of the comics shows and alternate timeline where Jim dies in the eternal night

And i think that was an unavoidable situation, Merlin practically manipulated Jim to make 1 choice not 2, the Deep showed a Non-human Jim (not exactly TrollJim but maybe a glimpse of him) and there's also the amount of foreshadowing around it, and i don't think the line "Don't worry mom, you don't need to protect me, i think this is what i was meant to do" in the transformation scene was a random choice of words hell even Hunter Jim warned him.

Do i think Guillermo didn't have enough balls to let him be a troll for the whole franchise? Mmmm no, if Guillermo really didn't have balls to do it he wouldn't even turned Jim into a troll to begin with besides where talking about the same madman who make Wizards a whole kill count of 10 episodes

Now for the point i wanna talk here is

what do i think about Jim turning back to human?

Let's do one thing first, separate Human Jim from Troll Jim as if they were different characters

Human Jim was the original Jim a happy boy who was happy to help his mama, hang with his friends and tried his beat into saving humankind and trollkind while trying not to skip school days

TrollJim was the most depressed and conflicted state Jim was in his life, he couldn't go in the sunlight, couldn't eat human food, was separated from his friends only having Claire and Blink, was almost killed by the Green Knight, locked in a crystal by Merlin, the shard was aiming for his heart, he got to fight another war while being phisically at his most painful state and then he knew that no matter what he tries the Onyx will eventually kill him which leads me to believe that maybe Jim turning into a full Troll to fight Arthur was an attemp to do a "Suicide by Cop"

Human Jim was the warrior he became a new "light" for all the earth, Troll Jim was the warrior Merlin wanted him to be he "eclipsed" himself

TrollJim's main reason to exist was to kill Gunmar, Angor and Morgana and save everyone from the Eternal Night, notice how after killing Gunmar and after Angor's death TrollJim was slowly "dying" when he meet Arthur.

Then he turns himself into Beast Jim turning into a pseudo Gumm-Gumm, Jim was at his most feral, confused and most uncontrolable state, even his soul ended up corrupted, the happy Jim and tragically heroic TrollJim that we knew died in that moment all what's left was "that beast"

And what happens after Morgana (the last reminisence of the eternal night, the reason why TrollJim was born) dies not so after Jim also dies, notice what i'm trying to say? Born to defeat Gunmar, Angor and Morgana? And just after Morgana's death he finally dies too? I'm not trying to say that Jim needed Morgana to die to be human again what i'm trying to say is that with M finally dead he's free from the Eternal Night, Human Jim came back and is now with his friends a second chance his "resurrection".

After all that suffering, being born to fight a war and being turned into a monster TrollJim can finally rest in peace and leave the rest to Human Jim

I see this whole thing as a rebirth of Jim and as a way to let TrollJim rest cause he could finally ended his purpose (even if he wasn't exactly the one who killed Morgana)

For an example to this i have Ken Kaneki and Haise Sasaki, the same being but not the same person, Haise was just a happy dream of Ken and once he finally accepted that, he "died" and let Kaneki regain his body, the difference is that the Ken and Haise thing was literal while the Jim and TrollJim thing is more of my POV (now you get why i used Haise and Kaneki as a reference for the fan art)

But anyways that's just my opinion, but everyone can have their own interpretations

So in short: Jim regaining his humanity was like a second chance of living while TrollJim dying was a way to set him free

So I plan on re-writing the Rise of the Titans movie altogether and having a prequel later on. I don’t know how long it will be or take(giving how many chapters I want to put in). But for now I want to showcase Jim since he is our starring boy!

It kinda felt weird to me how Jim turned back into a human near the end of Wizards for some reason, and how Merlin said there was no way to turn him back. So I just redesigned his troll fit and added a few details from his ACTUAL troll form(such as his horns and tattooed lines). I also gave him longer hair and scruff since we never really see it(plus Its been like what a couple of years? man does NOT care about hair length). And where the amulet was? now a cool scar.

For character analyse I just wanted to use flat colors in case I wanted to do flashbacks or short comics/doodles. Over on the right I wanted to line out how differently each for was like body build and facial structures. 

And finally armor. Everything is overall the same except for the moonlight armor(which can be read in Angor Reborn) and the RoTT armor. I hated how it looked in the movie with the added Excalibur and Akaridian tech(sorry Krel love ya<3) and it just didn’t look right. So I took inspiration from King Arthurs armor and added a little bit of how his troll form looks(like horns and spikes. I also wanted him to have a cape since he deserves it<3
