it's so frustrating when people call block of flats "soulless" or "empty" bc it's laughably obvious they've never been near one. i take a short stroll around my neighborhood and see 20 windows with the same curtains as mine bc they were the cheapest at the nearest store, i see children playing and their parents gossiping on a nearby bench, i see 7 people watching TV and 4 of them are watching the same shitty movie that's on TV right now. people are drying their laundry, repotting plants, smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee on their balconies, listening to music, they're walking their dogs, taking their trash out, airing out their bedrooms, laughing, arguing, celebrating, sleeping in, complaining, and the trees are blooming and the bees are buzzing. it's a space that could fill 10 houses top but instead it serves more than 150 families and it's fucking great & i love it here

one other thing since im here now. a lot of people's arguments against brutalism that I've heard are like "but wouldn't it be ugly and depressing if it was only plain concrete as far as the eye could see?" girl WHO is saying that !!! ofc im not advocating for total urbanisation or concretification because i know the implications that has for the environment and i know the importance of nature being allowed to flourish in urban spaces. also why do u think brutalism means everything is the same! it isn't a monolithic movement there isn't one type of brutalism. why would u assume im advocating for homogenisation VARIETY is IMPORTANT. a combination of brutalism and ecobrutalism and green spaces and other styles of building are all important in a city and i recognise that and whenever I talk to a brutalism hater they always pull those stupid straw man arguments out of their ass 😭 not to mention brutalism is about more than just concrete its space + height + dimension + angles + accommodation + above all its about the people who live in those buildings !! the thing that sets urban brutalism apart from other buildings is that it is a blank canvas that allows for murals and grafitti and ecological adaptations and that's not me saying brutalism is only good when it's covered up im saying that in an ideal world it would encourage adaptations and an emphasis on the community which includes exterior decoration. things like neoclassicism or the tudor style and terrace housing, that you find in a lot of western Europe for example, already have all the finishings and embellishments that the architect imagined and when someone grafittis a gothic or neoclassical building its seen as defacing or vandalism, but in a brutalist/modernist cityscape i think it should be encouraged. you can never understand the vastness and colourfulness of my beliefs. listening to Adrian Tchaikovsky's Eyes of the Void*, and i can't get enough of Havaer Mundy—peak wet rat energy. arguably more so than Idris, who is admittedly also a battered lil guy but he has people who love him and whom he can rely on.

Havaer is just a lil guy with his back against the wall in a morally fraught job with dubious superiors, and he wants to join the nice warm bickering spacer crew but he Can't 'cause he has Obligations to the intelligence service that doesn't give a fuck about him at all.

growing up by chicago has spoiled me rotten. i visit any other major metropolitan city and my reaction is always …oh! is that it?

Every time I hear someone talk about literally anything as being better because it's ~modern~ I think about grey-and-white interior design, and soulless bland blank garbage that's easier to mass produce, and think uncharitable thoughts at how easily so many people just go the fuck along with whatever is ~trendy~ so they won't look ~out of touch~ or whateverthefuck.
