*happy sniff* I might no longer be a practicing teacher, but the fact that so many of my readers have said that my chapter epigraphs for ATOV that are presented as textbook excerpts on topics of politics, government, sociology, religion, and other topics are books that they wish they could read in full...

It is such a compliment.

I am writing a fanfic here. Yes, technically it's also an alternate history novel, but it's fundamentally a fanfic. I do exposition in the chapter openings with excerpts from what are presented as in-universe texts. And I've done such a good job with those that I have people wanting to read the books talking about nation-building, or political and social structures, or religious history...

Just... as a teacher, there is no higher compliment than knowing that a small portion of a text that does not exist anywhere outside of my imagination has not only imparted a lesson, but has made the readers want more.

To say that I am overjoyed at this response is an understatement.

Finally got around to designing Jhara's back tattoo and after watching ATSV I realized I accidentally made her a Spider-Person, whoops. Let's look at the evidence:

Accidentally acquired powers that have great responsibility: check

Spider theme and imagery: check

Climbs and swings real good: check

Animate Rope spell = web slinging: check

Dead father figures: check

Conclusion: Jhara is a spider person.

If I had a nickel for every time I read a fic involving a burgeoning empire hiring a teenage girl as the spymaster, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice.

Folklore continued to evolve in the North Sea Empire, despite the claims of certain prescriptivist academics to the contrary. While certainly there were heroic tales of the exploits of the leading families and individuals of the Empire, there were other, more wide-ranging developments beyond these individual works. One of the most infamous examples is how, within the space of a generation, an entire new class of minor malevolent entity had entered the stories and traditions of many of the ethnic and cultural groups in the Empire—that of the kroaziad, taken from the Brezhoneg word for crusader. By the 1070s, instances of this genre of folklore and folktales were commonly recorded, and it is possible to track the development and spread of this particular class over the prior and subsequent decades.

While the particulars differ between different ethnic and social groups, the general commonalities of the kroaziad are that they are disembodied malicious spirits sourced from the souls of Christian Crusaders slain in their attacks on Imperial communities; that their abilities , in their weakened state, mostly amount to causing minor problems and inconveniences for the household thus afflicted; and that their agreed-upon leader is the knight Sir Henry of Brittany. Other details vary between different groups. On the topic of removal, for example, the Breizhad hold that the best way to be rid of them is to shake a pouch filled with dragon-scales, while the Jews state that they cannot stand running water, and the Danes believe that a hearth-fire will repel them. The reasons for the spirits staying in this world and not moving onto the afterlife are likewise varied; among the Breizhad, the local psychopomp, Ankou, is believed to refuse to allow them to sully their cart, while the Jews state that the spirits themselves are responsible for their circumstance through a rejection of accepting responsibility for their crimes, and the Swedes state that neither Odin, Freyja, Rán, nor Hel allowed them into their realms, citing ‘standards’.

I saw your post about rereading ATOV so I decided to follow you

It's always fun to run into a fellow ATOV fan :D

So happy to run into you too!! I keep on gasping every time something plot relevant comes up. The noise I made about Valka being on ‘screen’ during the end of book iii was inhuman. I genuinely thought she wasn’t going to show since I know that everything after HTTYD is a buffet table of ideas and I’m so happy she’s here but at what cosssttttt. Merida and Cami are literally the cutest, Siglout’s plot line so far has been top tier and likely the best out of all of them and Hiccup/Wulfhild/Astrid is so cute I swear I have cavities. Also RUFFNUT QUEEN OF NORWAY had made me so proud and happy for her the whole times and I’m always delighted to read anything with her!!!!! Magnus and Stoick are giving such fascinating vibes and plot so far, I’m DEAD INSIDE after all the breakdowns Hiccup has poor baby, Fishwings has become my favorite developed canon character of all time really fast and her and Viggo has my head spinning. I’m terribly fond of Heather’s plot line and yeah—

book 4 might actually kill me.
