A clan in flotsam town that focuses on buisness. I'm cool with a few of the dragons but generally feels boring. Babylon’s Ashes, Chapters 28 & 29

Well, it feels like at some point somebody needs to die due to high G stroke, because it’s been brought up as a risk several times and thus far we’ve only heard of one case and it was as a part of a conspiracy rant. And Holden is right, Fred did have a whole bunch of additional risk factors, so him dying like this wasn’t that unexpected.

It’s just that I liked Fred as a character, and I’m sad to see him go. Hopefully the book will make his death at least as interesting as him being there would have been.

Also, it’s pretty obvious how Marco is going to spin the fight, considering that Fred did actually die as a result of their actions. Fred wouldn’t have been running as haggard as he was, if not for the Free Navy, and he wouldn’t have been on the ship going as fast as he was if it wasn’t for them. It doesn’t matter that it was random and something that could have happened in the next month even if the Free navy didn’t exist.

I also really liked the Avasara chapter, even if I don’t have much to say about it. She’s still my favourite character.

Maybe I just like old politicians.

Avasara Academy at the Architecture Biennale in Venice

Transsolar has collaborated with CASE Design for an exhibition at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale, the world’s leading architecture exhibition event running through November 2018. Our work is exhibited in the Arsenale as part of the main exhibition: FREESPACE.

Transsolar developed the climate, sustainability, and comfort concepts for Avasara Academy. This residence school campus in India is designed by Mumbai based architecture firm CASE Design and featured passive design as a key aspect of the architecture. CASE Design was invited to exhibit the vital experiential and design characteristics of the project at the Biennale as part of the main exhibition FREESPACE. Transsolar collaborated with CASE Design to demonstrate the working principles of “passive cooling and natural ventilation through solar radiation” by a three-dimensional working model of the building’s passive design. A video shows the working model at the Biennale and the following text describes major components of the model:

Passive Cooling and Natural Ventilation through Solar Radiation

The three -dimensional model is a working demonstration of passive cooling design for Avasara Academy. Warm outside air is pulled through a series of earth ducts (the four circular openings at the bottom of the model), which cools the air before supplying into classrooms. The small lamps inside the classrooms represent heat gain from human bodies (students and teachers). The air from the earth ducts in combination with a thermally massive concrete ceiling and stone floors makes the classrooms up to 10°C (20°F) cooler compared to the outside. At the top, a solar chimney facing the sun (represented by the halogen lamp in the model) absorbs solar heat. The heat inside the chimney warms up the air in the shaft, pulls it up and out (see the smoke rising from the chimney in the model at the top), driving natural ventilation through the whole building.

Cibola Burn, Interlude 6 and chapter 55

Yeah, I don’t think this interlude gives us any answer regarding whether we’ll see Miller again. On one hand, he did say “we’re gonna be fine” and I actually believe that he has enough information about the decision process of the protomolecule to know what it’ll do next.

On the other hand, this could be a good ending for this version of him. He gets to help people again, and his idea of “fine” could contain being a part of the same hivemind as Julie, without strictly being an individual.

Havelock had a good ending too, his change of heart at the end was seen as heroic and the company can’t fire him for that. The public would not like it.

That really doesn’t bode well for Murtry, does it? Someone needs to take the fall, and Murtry is a good person for that. Especially when Holden has a personal grudge against him, and Avasara’s ear on top of it all.

Finally, the rules of fiction say that there might be hardships, but after they persevered here nothing can keep them down. In reality they might be fucked, but I really doubt anything too bad will happen to them after this.
