was going thru drafts and found this post from a bit ago that like. i stand by but also i definitely didn’t realize at the time that the backformation mechanic i'd posited had implications for the poet's first name as well, specifically that ‘ed’ might (in this scenario) be a nickname for the longer form ‘beheaded’ 😅

@x-avier I don't know much about X-Men honestly. I saw the first film when it came out, and I watched the cartoon as a kid, but otherwise, I'm pretty blanked on X-Men in general to be honest. Trinity had always loved his classes with the Professor; it was hard to find anyone had an ill word to speak of him, at least, in this context. To the empath, though, there was an understanding between the two of them that gave him more of a sense of identity than usual; who better to know how emotions can affect one, especially the emotions of others, than Charles Xavier? Of course, it also helped that he and his teacher shared a love of literature, especially classics. They often related his powers through stories, framing his mental exercises as studies in character --- how would he react to being forced to feel Achilles' sorrow at the loss of Patroclus, or the joy of Cordelia as her father took her back to his side? All of the colors of this spectrum were necessary, as at some point, his powers would force him to see them. It was when, not if, and even his short time amongst the X-Men had opened him up to wells of sorrow and overflowing cups of joy. It was not a surprise, then, when the Professor spoke Dickens' words to him as a response, when he'd asked how it could be possible to compartmentalize all of these dueling concepts. Trinity took a moment, nodding as a sort of realization softened his brow. But he was still a teenager, and couldn't help the unsure response that came when his lips finally parted. "That's so much to ask for, don't you think, Professor?" It wasn't angry, nor as if he thought it insurmountable. An expression of a small, doubtful voice in the back of his mind --- that he wondered now, if he had even needed to vocalize given who sat across from him --- that Trinity wondered if he could ever find himself enough to gain such control.
