We performed a poem for Mona #RIP that my ma wrote. She spoke in Farsi, and I spoke in English. This is the only time my ma and I have ever shared a stage. This is the only time I've ever cried on a stage. . Mona Mahmudnizhad was a teenage Baha'i martyr that died in 1983 in an Iranian prison just after my mom had her first child. My ma has always had a big heart for the martyrs who died very young! Thinking about her poem a lot recently because the Baha'i Fast is happening now and #NawRuz (new year) is around the corner and in the neighborhoods I work in, often we're loosing our youths' lives unjustly too. For different reasons, but in both cases these youths' lives are the collateral damage in systemic oppression enacted for political reasons. . My ma and I are as imperfect as anyone. Writing the poem doesn't make my ma a martyr, performing the translation doesn't make me a martyr. It just means that when the poet put her pen to paper to write from right to left she was grieving. And when the poet wrote its translation from left to right, she was grieving again. And when we shared the microphone and held the stage for 5min, we existed in a heightened state of empathy - I think this is what it ought to feel like ea time a prayer is said. . My ma still wonders about how I ended up being an artist and a youth worker. But the art was always around me. The art was my ma's response to each of life's turning points. The art was my sustenance when we didn't have food. The art was my reprieve in the midst of sustained fear of impending homelessness. The protective capsule and medicine for my early years! So my belief that art is the greatest tool to manage trauma among youth would follows suit! . The apple doesn't fall that far from mamman's tree! . Safe fasting to all the friends! Safe living to all the friends! Coronavirus Toilet Paper

I broke the 19-day Baha’i fast, this evening, with Daiya Foods' Cheeze Lovers pizza and added freshly sliced mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, black and green olives, Violife cheddar cheese, Lightlife's Smart Ground plant-based crumbles, a dash of oregano, and a dash of powdered garlic.  That was swigged down with spring water then chamomile and fresh ginger tea sweetened with Maple syrup.  That wasn't the most interesting part of the evening, though!  

After reading on Twitter that NYC government officials are considering to lockdown NYC to curb the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, I went shopping for toilet paper.  On my block, I saw a rare, but an iconic site.  A group of unsupervised black and white tween boys walked west as I walked past.  I loved that the white boy was bouncing a basketball as they walked together.  Then, I thought, eesh, he doesn't realize how filthy is this block's sidewalk!  Anyway, an unchaperoned group of young children is never seen on my usually busy block which also includes the Port Authority on the opposite side.  So, I warmly greeted the boys with a smile, and their "tough" street smart expressions relaxed.  

I ran into Jian, a Baha'i living in the same neighborhood, at Target in Herald Square and, yes, we maintained social distancing of six feet or so.  He assured me that Target had toilet paper.  However, everyone was limited to one unit.  I made sure to grab the largest Charmin (the 12-pack ultra strong mega rolls) on the shelf.  

My last stop was at Food Emporium where I picked up that vegan pizza, yellow onions, red potatoes, carrots, and roach spray (I keep hearing creepy crawlies from behind the refrigerator).  Initially, I skipped the aisle for the bug spray because that's the same aisle of the empty toilette paper shelves.  An employee lead me straight to the location of the bug spray.  Our stride was slowed down by a senior citizen who appeared to be a Hispanic woman.  The three of us chatted for only a few minutes, but this was a time for us to share and care.  

In our brief conversation, after I mentioned that she was violating the social distancing rule (she was only a few feet away), she exclaimed that her acquaintance told her to stay inside, but that she was going to go out whenever she wanted.  The lady also shared an unfortunate experience of going to Staples to buy toilet paper.  She and another shopper arrived at the toilet paper aisle at about the same time, but the younger woman grabbed all three of the remaining units.  The elderly lady said that the younger woman had to know that she was there to get toilet paper too, and didn't understand why the other woman had to be so selfish.  At that point, I made sure to tell her that there was toilet paper at Target.
