here's another Splatoon theory that I don't even like

starting with a few questions:

what's the deal with [#14] crush?

why did dedf1sh make a Splattack remix?

what was Agent 3 doing during Octo Expansion?

We've been told somewhere, probably in some interview, that dedf1sh doesn't typically make music for others, but instead mostly only makes what they want to. From there it's easy to extrapolate that their music reflects their feelings, (or what was left of them post-sanitization) that they expressed themself through their compositions.

This paints a sad picture of their time in the underground, as most of their music from Octo Expansion has a tense and lonely feel to it. Which is why [#14] crush stands out so much. If you've forgotten which track that is, give it a listen:

It's goofy! It's chaotic and silly! If you didn't make Agent 8 hop around, flop, and spin to this track, you either didn't get far enough in Octo Expansion, or you're lying to yourself.

What gives?

The word "crush" can mean a lot of things, but this track doesn't exactly convey anything that sounds like being emotionally or physically crushed. It...sounds a lot more like the chaotic mix of emotions that comes with having a crush on someone. (this is where I need to apologize to Team Aromantic Acht. Love y'all, you guys do your thing and I'll do mine, cool?)

If I'm even in the ballpark of correct, that begs the question: on who?

There haven't been many characters we know about being in the underground, and even fewer who could potentially have encountered Kamabo's sanitized DJ. But if process of elimination isn't enough, there is a hint: as stated previously, Dedf1sh tends to only create their own compositions for their own interest, with few known exceptions. One of these exceptions is the Splattack! remix that plays during the Agent 3 boss fight. Again, it doesn't really match the style of the rest of their music from Octo Expansion, which suggests to me that they chose to remix that track specifically for someone who likes it, namely Agent 3.

Conclusion: Acht encountered Former Agent 3 during the time they were both underground, became as infatuated as a sanitized individual can be, and remixed 3's favorite song in an attempt to impress them.

(for my fellow Agent 24 shippers: I'm not necessarily saying that it worked. I'm saying that a sanitized Acht saw someone cool and made a couple banger tracks about it. Maybe at best Agent 3 appreciated and was intrigued by the gesture, especially coming from a sanitized octoling.)

I made this post earlier, but it didn't save properly in drafts so I gotta start over :/

Before I begin with species and fun facts, first a question for anyone who might live in NY: What is this? Why??

It was a simple 4-way intersection!

In Ontario we have this for the same scenario:

Is this an American thing? Just a New York thing? There's gotta be a good reason for that mess.

Back on topic, we start off with a banger:

Wood Frog (Lithobates Sylvaticus)

(The pic is rotated that's why the grass is weird) Recognized them right away because I found one in a swamp nearer to home in June, can't find the post to link. They can handle freezing 65-70% of the water in their body, and the reason why has to do with urea, glucose, and "amino acid substitutions in the ... ATP binding site" (Wood frog - Wikipedia). They depend on multiple habitats, breed in seasonal pools, and have large ranges.

Dragonfly/Damsel fly (order Odonata)

I know, I know, hear me out. At first I had no idea who this shed exoskeleton represented, but apparently Dragonflies have a life cycle in which little things that look like this hatch out of eggs, moult many times, and after their final moult look like a proper dragonfly. Now, this suit of armour's abdomen looks too large for me to be fully convinced it's a dragonfly, but it's the best guess so far.

Leopard Earthball (Scleroderma areolatum)

As usual with mushrooms, not 100% confident with this ID, and not a ton of info on the species. The inside is supposed to be full of black spores so the mushroom, instead of raining spores from gills, is like a pouch of spores. I'm pretty sure I'm in the ballpark though, as it's definitely an earthball of some sort. I couldn't find a species on iNat that had pics that showed the same amount of flakiness as these guys.

Ghost Pipes (Monotropa uniflora)

Re-writing this section is a shame because I just cannot re-produce the excitement. I was nothing less than ecstatic to find a mycoheterotroph. I had read about this almost mystical, otherworldly, ethereal treasure of a living being in Merlin Sheldrake's Entangled Life, but never thought I had a good chance of seeing any in real life. These guys have a history of baffling scientists, and are the source of much of our understanding of the nature of Mycorrhizal networks. In short, they have no chloroplasts and no roots - they cannot photosynthesize and they cannot bring in nutrients or moisture from the soil. How then do they survive? Fungi! All the carbon, energy, and more that it uses to build and sustain itself comes from other plants through the Mycorrhizal networks that span forests. I could go on and on about how these plants represent magic living on and even through a scientific world, but this caption is already too long.

Yellow Club Fungus (Clavulinopsis Helvola)

At first I thought it was Golden Spindles fungus, (C. Fusiformis), but after looking into more detail I figured C. Helvola was more likely because of size. Honestly, I thought they might be Cordyceps at first because that's the only club-shaped fungus I remember reading about, but nope. Apparently the spores are covered in warts, which distinguishes them from other Clavulinopsis species, but I was not prepared to take specimens for further inspection this time. In a rare occurrence, I am almost semi-confident about this ID. Surely I got the right genus?

Northern Red Belt (Fomitopsis mounceae)

This one I am also semi-confident in my identification of. It's got a red belt at the end and is in North America, it's bumpy/warty and has a white underside, and was found on a dead tree at low elevation, all characteristics of F. Mounceae. This species was distinguished from F. pinicola by Irene Mounce (A Canadian! 🇨🇦), after whom it was named.

God, I'm tired

Yes this is gonna be a vent post let me have this and let it be scattered like dust in the wind

I've been the main mod of this blog for like over a year, I remember roughly how many followers we had and generally how many notes a post would get on average, it wasn't as busy as the Mod Dave era but that's how it goes sometimes. We had somewhere in the ballpark of 11k followers and most posts averaged out at around 125-175 notes per post give or take with a few outliers here and there

Fast forward about a year and a half and we're nearly at 15k followers, and the average post is rarely cracks 100 notes

Someone explain it to me how it makes any sense. How is it that we're at our theoretical most popular and yet engagement is abysmal?

I know not every post we make is a banger but sweet jegus, our audience has brown by a third but our actual engagement has been halved

I don't think that the quality of our work isn't poor, but given the lukecold reactions to what we do here it does feel rather disheartening

I'm not planning on leaving this blog anytime soon, just needed to get my frustrations out there. It's not easy seeing the things you put love and care into be met with seeming indifference.

oh god thats a great question. ive published four, but in terms of fics ive worked on at All this year i would ballpark like. 20? 25?

12. What fic was the most difficult to write? Did you finish it?

i find different things difficult for different reasons, so id probably have a few answers to this question! but i started a couple fics for fringe (2008-2013) the best show of all time ever that my DEAR dear friend franny introduced me to this year, and i find it really really hard to get into the rhythm of writing new characters/worlds/voices so probably those fics were the toughest!! one is like. 99% finished (no clue why i havent just gotten the job done yet lol) and one is very much not. someday i will write my charlie francis grief olivia pov manifesto.

26. If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?

hands down without question the night i finished o&2. it was the end of the last chapter that id had in my head since 2021 and it was all coming out EXACTLY how i wanted it to, i had mood lighting and mood music that all culminated so perfectly it was a very special moment!! :')

30. What’s something that you want to write in 2024?

i want to clear out some banger half-finished wips i started in 2021 and after that i am very much looking forward to seeing what inspiration junior year brings!!! yippee!!

A Window of the Waking Mind (REVIEW)

Prog-rock icons Coheed and Cambria are back with their 10th studio album, Vaxis II: A Window of The Waking Mind, the long (though far longer in feeling) awaited followup to 2018’s The Unheavenly Creatures. The band’s latest effort continues the story of Nia Worn and Nostrand Crane, two escaped fugitives, and their powerful son, Vaxis. The album brandishes its share of Coheedisms and its concept echoes the earliest adventures of singer/guitarist Claudio Sanchez’s The Amory Wars. Though like its namesake, Vaxis II is a brand new beast and is ripe with fresh direction both musically and thematically.

A Window of The Waking Mind admits us back into the realm of the Keywork with a familiar melody from Unheavenly Creatures’ “Old Flames,” only this time sung by a young voice. We are taken to believe that this voice in the opening track , “The Embers of Fire,” is none other than the child Vaxis himself.

In welcomed Coheed fashion, the opening track transitions seamlessly into “Beautiful Losers.” Hardcore fans might pick up on this reference to one of Claudio Sanchez’s former projects, a proto-coheed if you will. The song might be described as their standard fair, with a sound reminiscent of the non-conceptual The Color Before The Sun. It’s one of the more percussively relaxed songs on the record, characterized by a heavy chugging guitar through its verses that’s never quite on the brink (ha, get it? HAIL!) of sounding aggressive. The chorus, however, will undoubtedly be a crowd swaying delight on the band’s summer tour.

The album picks up speed with “Comatose,” a fast paced punk bop in which drummer Josh Eppard truly shines and that also breaks the ice with Vaxis II’s courtship with vocal effects. The pre-chorus and chorus here are just two of the countless melodies down the tracklist that will be living in our heads rent free. 

Without spoiling the album, I will emphasize it as a culmination of eras that breaks the barrier of what’s to come. There are elements that harken back to the Afterman duology, Color, Black Rainbow, and some guitar work which sounds directly lifted from In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3. However, the tart, hard-plucked guitar harmonies of albums past feature here as mostly accents, especially in the last act of VAXIS II, starting with “Ladders of Supremacy.” Fans of the Good Apollo albums will want to savor Ladders, as it bleeds straight into “Rise Naianasha (Cut the Cord),” one of the album’s singles, on to where everything is brought home by the eight-minute title track.

The writing for this record is unrelentingly personal. It simultaneously reflects the events of the latest Amory Wars chapter, while also resonating as an honest picture of Sanchez’s own life, from his marriage to raising a child, amidst challenges in the paranormal era of the COVID pandemic.

Sanchez’s emotionally raw writing takes flight on the album’s sentimental banger, “Blood.” A lyrical message seemingly meant for both Vaxis, from his parents, and to Sanchez’s own son, marks one instance of the singer’s songwriting ability to deliver meaning across two universes; our own and the one he has created.

Admittedly, as a long time listener of the band (which founded my interest in comic books and modern progressive rock) I half-expected no surprises from Window. Post-YOTBR Coheed, with no discredit to their musicianship, has seemed fairly niched down in the way they write songs, guitar parts, even albums.

Heaven’s Fence, was I wrong.

While the album’s singles released over the past year, starting with “Shoulders,” were impressive on both a musical and production level, they were not a complete picture of what the album has to offer. Vaxis II’s show-stealing tracks, “The Disappearing Act,” a dance hit driven by a poppy 4/4 beat and EDM-influenced synthesizer line, and “Bad Man,” a song which emulates The Weeknd, will no doubt confound much of Coheed and Cambria’s fan base whose expectations of their music may fall within the ballpark confines of 80’s influenced dad rock.

Vaxis II might be Coheed and Cambria’s tightest release to date. It offers the host of their finest qualities, with the cleanest mixing and producing of their career, and manages to do so in under an hour. Vaxis II’s most memorable impression, though, is of Coheed and Cambria’s fearless willpower to adapt through time and explore new sounds.

1. which one of your fics would you keep the basic plot of but rewrite completely? probably i wanna shoop baby, it feels a little rushed, and though i have some absolute banger lines in there, i want to add a little more emotion instead of just fluffy crack

8. how slow is a slow burn? its not a slow burn until your otp doesn't meet until chapter 61 of a 327-chapter fic aghkggae there has to be at least 8 romantically tinged scenes and 5 will-they-wont-they moments before the characters either get together, kiss, or just confess their feelings before i consider it a slow burn. (it usually ends up being around 50k minimum)

21. can you accurately predict how long your fics are going to be? if so, what's your secret? actually yes! yes i can! usually before i start writing a fic, i like having an "outline," or basically just a list of scenes that i'm going to have in there. depending on the length/emotional depth of the scene, it's anywhere between 3k-7k. i add those up, and if i think of new scenes or add something new while writing, i just factor that into the total (though that doesn't happen often). then, i add 10k to that total bc i know my writing is wordy and overly flowery. that usually puts me in the general ballpark of how long my fics turn out to be!

You are asking someone BIZARRELY well prepared for this question because, I have a Hobonichi Techo from last year and this one in which I make note of matches I particularly enjoy. So I’m just going to leaf through those for a second and list them (some are just throwaway undercard stuff that was fun, tag matches and the like...I can provide dates but probably didn’t always note events). *some additions: the whole Tekkers/GOD feud was very interesting and fun but I’d skip Golden Ace/Tekkers because I found it so hard to get through I was actually drinking by the end.  Also the 4 way to determine the first KOPW champion was ridiculous and fun iirc, it was at the baseball stadium show last year...summer struggle? Maybe?  Anyway ymmv wrt to like, Kota matches, because honestly a lot of the decisions they made with him = I have basically not watched one of his in over a year, and I’ve been sleepwalking through the matches for that bastard frankenstein title that killed the ones I loved as well 😩
