Oh this is such a fun question.

I think both Ravi and Croft would be drawn to Basil's spirituality and general vibe, but Croft would hesitate at his bright, outgoing personality. It would definitely take some time to warm up...though IDK if Basil would get along with Croft's grumpy ass lmao. Truly I think Yasmin would hit it off best with him. She enjoys a good sense of humor as well as people who don't take themselves too seriously.

Perri would want to be Flo's friend SO bad. They could infodump about their favorite subjects together. Seriously Perri would love to sit for hours kicking their feet and chatting about cryptids and horror and megafauna...as soon as they got over their initial awkwardness lmao. Also Ravi would think he's incredibly hot 😌

Beck would be SO into Reem he'd think she's so badass and cool. 100% instant heart eyes lmao. He loves flirting he loves joking around he loves people who are cooler than him. Perri would want to talk music with her, but would probably be too intimidated. Jay'd love to sit down and have a jam session though!! They get along with almost anyone and playing music together is a fun way to get a feel for a person.

When it comes to Anita, I think Jay would be drawn to her! They have a healthy respect for people who are driven...and can definitely relate to being a bit of a workaholic. Plus tbh I just think they'd think she's cute lmao. Croft would also appreciate both her snark and the fact that she's both nerdy and a bit on the quieter side.

On 17th May 1741 George Watson’s Hospital School was opened in Edinburgh with 11 pupils.

The school was established according to the instructions of George Watson who bequeathed the bulk of his fortune of £12,000 - a vast sum in 1723 — to found a hospital school for the provision of post-primary boarding education to the “children and grandchildren of decayed Merchants of Edinburgh, and of the Ministers of the Old Church thereof”. He further expressed a preference for those by the surname of Davidson or Watson.

Watson was never a member of the Merchant Company of Edinburgh, but he was impressed by their running of the Merchant Maiden Hospital and so he chose them to implement the terms of his will. After some years, the Governors finally bought land known as Heriot’s Croft, located off Lauriston Place in Edinburgh, close to the Meadows and opposite George Heriot’s School. The foundation stone was laid on 22 May 1738, and the building was completed early in 1741.

At the time, there was concern that this site was too far from the city a point I explain to many visitors I have shown around Edinburgh to show how small the city once was.In accordance with Watson’s will, the Governors were responsible for former pupils up to the age of 25; they were helped to find apprenticeships and paid an allowance.

Watson’s stated preference was for allowing the Hospital’s charges to become skilled workers, though the Governors also allowed boys who showed an ability to pursue medicine or academia

By the 1860s, the hospital school system had fallen into general public disrepute, while the Merchant Company was fearful both of government intervention in the schooling system and of its own decline. The solution was to re-found Watson’s, and the three other hospitals under its governorship, as day schools. In July 1868 the Company applied to Parliament for powers to reorganise their schools and make different use of their endowments to as to make education more widely available.

“Watsons was thus completely transformed, reopening on 26 September 1870 as a fee-paying day school with a roll of 800 boys, initially called George Watson’s College Schools for Boys”’.

More change was to come quickly. In 1869, the original Hospital building was sold to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. When the infirmary sought to expand in 1871, the school moved a short distance west to the former Merchant Maiden Hospital building in Archibald Place. The original Hospital building was incorporated into the infirmary, and the chapel remained in use as the hospital chapel until the infirmary was itself moved away. The remains of the building were demolished in 2004 during the redevelopment of the infirmary site by the Quartermile consortium, which also redeveloped the site of the Archibald Place buildings, which had in turn been demolished in the 1930s after the school moved to its present site in Colinton.

Sport has always played a major part of the school, Watsonians FP RFC is affiliated to it, the FP  stands for former pupils and one pf our all time great players, Gavin Hastings was educated at Watsons and played for the rugby team.

Former pupils at the school include James Craig,  Gavin and Scott Hastings, Chris Hoy, Basil Spence, Jack Docherty, Gordon Kennedy and  Robin Williamson.

Redeem My Soul Chapter 21 Shock and Shots

Leery drives to the little croft at the Lake District. It is where she spent her childhood. Her parents had worked on the huge Ransom estate until he died without issue. They had then died on the way back to Scotland. She had meet her Uncle Dougal at their funeral. He had offered her a job. Working the pub, playing with the customers and Black Jack, who took over when Dougal left for America, had been a bit of extra fun. Then Jamie had walked in and despite being married to an auld man, a business associate of her Uncle Colum, she knew love for the first time.

She knew he was meet to be hers. Her only frustration is that he will only kiss her. Jack would take her on the desk. Well, she will find him and bring her back to the croft, still filled with her parents stuff, and change that.

Claire falls down by him and lifts his head into her lap. “Are you alright, baby?”

“Sorcha, not sure. I think I saw a ghost, a couple.”

“We aren’t spirits, mo mac. We are here.” His da, Christ Almighty. He still believes they are. Until he reaches out and touches him. Encountering flesh, he falls back against Claire.

“Ah Dhai, you are real. I thought I killed you. Was told… Oh, please forgive me. I dinna ken but I am making it right. Trying to.”

“We know.” His mam kneels down and he weeps in her arms as he had as a wean. She speaks soothing Gaelic over him.

“You forgive me?”

“You are our son and got caught up in their evil. Of course we do. We were upset for awhile but not anymore.”

“Mam da, meet the love of my life, my anchor, my heart, Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp.”

“We have meet Jamie.” She says through her tearful laughter. “I should go. This is family business.”

“You are family.” He reaches out for her and they all get up. They all find seats around the room. “Okay, can someone please explain why I was told you were dead?”

“We were told the same about you.” His da says. “Your sister can explain.”

He turns towards her and she sinks back in the couch. “Janet Murray, can you tell me why you held me at sword point and told me our parents had died and I killed them?”

“I had to bráther. Colum found out man was in the hospital and told me if they found out what you were about with him, he would kill them. The only way I knew to protect you and them, was to make you believe the other dead.” She pleads through her tears.

“HE DID WHAT?” Claire puts her hand on his arm. It calms him some but he is still shaking with rage. Colum would die.

“I couldn’t do less. Oh God Jamie. It killed me.” She is sobbing to hard to say more and he comes over to pull her into his arms.

“Ahh, you did as you had to. I don’t blame you. You brought them back.” He looks over at his weeping parents. “You are staying right?”

“Aye lad. We are going nowhere.”

“I will go pick some herbs for supper.” Claire offers, knowing they need some time. “Come Fergus.”

“Oui” mílady.”

They head into the garden and she begins to pick herbs.

Leery, in the croft next door, has the same idea. She comes out and sees Claire. “What is she doing here?” she wonders.

Jamie senses that something is wrong and heads out.

Claire continues to pick the basil and dill leaves, unaware she is being watched.

Leery walks closer and Jamie sees her. “Sorcha!” she turns towards him as Leery draws a gun. He is on her in seconds, throwing her to the ground as the gun goes off followed quickly by another. He searches her for blood as she shakes under him.

“If is alright Mílord. I got her.” He looks up in sees Leery down and then at Fergus holding his gun in his shaking hand. He smiles at him.

As lovers, obviously. She could easily beat up anyone who was mean to him. I’m not sure if I’d bring her to the past or him to the future, though. (I’m leaning towards her in the past so she can enjoy a lot of the punk, rock, grunge music she loves as it comes out, but I donno.) If you could drop yourself into any fictional world, which would it be?

Oh boy. I have a lot.... I have a mix of lib and conservative ones. I strive to be overall more consistent rather than loyal to a party/group. But I’ll stick to being non-political by saying.... In N Out is largely trash. 

How do you like to style your hair?

I have bangs across my forehead that I have to blow dry pretty much every time after I wash it. Kinda annoying, but I still like how they look. 

What three books would you want on a desert island?

Eh.... I guess some Ray Bradbury, some X-Men comics collection, and a book about how to get off a desert island.

I’ve been trying to study some things I’ve always wanted to study, but it’s been so easy to be lazy lol

Archaeologist rant

It’s 2021 and I still don’t know how people think that Tomb Raider is the epitome of what an archaeologist is when the title says it all, should I spell it? T O M B R A I D E R. 

Not archaeologist.

Archaeologists don’t keep important objects of value on their houses, those are plunderers, treasure hunters, grave robbers. We archaeologists want people to learn their history, to understand where we come from to try to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

We don’t want our houses to feel like a museum. We want museums to be big, to be awesome, for all to have access to culture, knowledge, history. I don’t have anything from any of the excavations I’ve been in (they’re not many but still). The only bones I have, I bought them from taxidermists.

It is normal, though, to have just a fragment of a ceramic, just a couple of bones from a couple of excavations, some stupid metal bits that you mentioned on your site report but wanted to keep instead of putting them back in a box forever because they’re “useless” or “worthless”.

But we don’t keep significant, important, objects to ourselves. 

Because that’s not what being an archaeologist means even if pop culture and media have told us all that it is. We’re not Indiana Jones, we’re not Lara Croft, we’re not Sydney Fox... We’re Ralph Fiennes playing Basil Brown in The Dig.

That’s it. Rant over. Archaeologist out.
