THE BACKSTORY
– At first, Korra thought you were cool. You smelt nice and had a smile that made her weak in the knees, but she didn't think anything of it. She was still processing her feelings for Asami.
– You had some kickass moves, Korra practically begged you to train with her so she could learn from a master such as yourself.
– You admired Korra, but similar to her, you didn't think anything of your feelings. She was just a very good friend.
– You and Kuvira were close. You shared everything with her and she barely shared anything with you.
– That's how you guys operated though! Even when you were children.
– Naturally, Kuriva was the type of sibling that had "only child" syndrome without being an only child.
– You'd tell her a story, she didn't care. You showed her something you needed her opinion on, and she wondered why this concerned her.
– Others think she's rude and wonder how you don't get your feelings hurt, but that was just Kuvira. It did sting when she got engaged to Bataar Jr. and didn't tell you, but you decided to let the feeling fizzle away on its own.
– When Kuvira betrayed Zaofu and took over the Earth Kingdom, things went to shit.
– Korra didn't trust you anymore. None of the Krew did. They thought you would betray them just like her.
– Until Korra saved Kuvira and carefully watched her progress in prison, Korra decided to rekindle your relationship again.
– She apologized for putting you and your sister in the same box. If she had a sibling and someone put them in the same box constantly, Korra would lose her shit.
– After her apology, and you accepted it, the two of you started hanging out again like nothing's changed.
– But something did change though. Your feelings for each other.
THE REALIZATION + GETTING TOGETHER
– Realizing you had a crush on Korra was easy for you. After you guys didn't talk when the Kuvira situation was at its peak, you had a lot of time to reflect on your feelings.
– You were angry at Korra for icing you out not just because she was doing it based on your sister's actions, but because you wanted her approval. You wanted her to like you.
– Why? Because you liked her.
– It took you all but nine months to realize you liked Korra. Korra however? Took her nearly over a year and a half.
– Granted, she was with Asami for a good chunk of it, but after the two broke up due to long-distance, (Asami was asked to present her inventions and teach youth across the globe), Korra realized she had a teensy weensy crush on you.
– She spent a good amount of time trying to ignore her feelings, yet again because she thought you didn't feel the same.
– However, you were giving her the same cues Asami gave her when they were crushing on each other.
– That's when Korra knew she had to make a move on you.
– She flirted, complimented you, purposely lost when you two sparred and lent you her shoulder to cry on when you had hard days. If you didn't realize she was girlfriend material yet, that was on you.
– All her subtlety led to her asking you out on a dinner date. --
"Hey, you know," Korra grabbed your wrist. You two had just finished sparring and you were about to walk away when she grabbed you. "I was thinking we should hang out more."
You laughed. "We hang out plenty. You want a sleepover or something?"
Korra rolled her eyes with a smile. She let go of your wrist. "I don't mind a sleepover, but I mean something different. We should go out. On a date."
Her eyes scanned your face. She was looking for a sign of rejection or maybe disgust. She knew you were interested, but she had a small part of her that thought it was all in her head.
Meanwhile, you were freaking out. The girl you liked for almost two years now asked you out on a date. You were hot, sweaty, and smelt like a ripe turtle-duck, yet, she still thought you were attractive enough to be asked out on a date!
"Uhm, yeah!" You smiled at the Avatar. "I think that's a good idea."
A fond, smitten smile showed up on Korra's lips. Her gaze softened, her blue eyes lovingly staring into yours. "Yeah?" she asked. Her voice was light and breathy.
Your smile matched hers. "Yeah." --
THE RELATIONSHIP
– A romantic relationship with Korra was the exact same as having a platonic one with her. The only difference was kisses, cuddles, dates, and a shit ton of napping were now a part of the package deal.
– Korra showed her vulnerable side a lot more once you started dating. Before, she would hide it and you would have to encourage her it's okay, but now, she had no fear and often came to you with her troubles.
– You never complained. You were her rock and she was yours.
– Whenever the day came up to visit Kuvira in her cell, Korra was there to help you through it.
– It was difficult seeing your sister locked up for what she's done. She was skinnier, her hair was always messed up, and the bags in her eyes seemed to double each time you saw her.
– Seeing her made you an emotional wreck.
– You would cry hours before, sometimes during the visit, and often after the visit. Korra was with you the entire time. She also offered to come to Kuvira's cell with you but you'd always declined.
– When the time came for Kuvira's release after she helped Korra with Guan and was put under close watch in Republic City, you spent a lot more time with your sister than you did with Korra.
– Korra understood, though. You haven't seen your sister in a while and you wanted to get as much time back as possible.
– After you noticed how little time you spent with Korra after Kuvira's release, you decided to surprise Korra one night with a homemade candle-lit dinner, all her favorite movies, and a dessert the two of you shared back in Zaofu.
– It was a little overdue, especially after the work Korra did for the United Republic election, but better late than never! --
"Babe, I'm home!" Korra exclaimed as she walked into your shared home. The place was dark and the smell of slow-cooked meat and potatoes wafted up Korra's nose. She slipped her shoes off by the door. "Babe?"
It was quiet. Korra assumed you were sleeping, but it was barely eight o'clock at night and you wouldn't leave food out. Not fresh food at least.
Korra's eyes flicked to the middle of the living room.
You had lit a match.
"Babe, what are you--" Korra walked over to you.
You interrupted her with a 'sh'. You took your match and lit the candles in the center of the table.
Now being able to see, Korra's gaze dropped to the table in front of you. She noticed you pushed the couches closer to the walls so there was space for the table in its unusual spot in the living room. A beige tablecloth was laid overtop the old and dingy wooden table. Plates of food rested on top along with small loaves of bread and cups of water.
Korra's heart skipped a few beats. Jittery feelings exploded up to her spine and her ears gained warmth. This was how she felt when you kissed for the first time. She fell in love with you all over again.
"Did..." Korra ran her fingertips against the soft cloth on the table. "Did you do this for me?"
You nodded. You grabbed a candle from the centerpiece and walked toward her. "You've done a lot lately. Not only for me but for your people,"
"That's my job though. I'm your girlfriend and the Avatar."
"Perhaps," You stood in front of her. "but you deserve to have special nights or thank you's even if it is your job."
Korra grabbed the candle and put it back in the centerpiece. She grabbed your hands.
"I know it's been draining lately," you resumed. "physically with being the Avatar and emotionally with my sister stuff."
Korra opened her mouth to speak, but you kept going.
"And I also know I haven't been spending much time with you lately so," you guided Korra to her chair. You sit her down and drape a fabric napkin across her lap. "this is me making up for not being with you. I don't want you to think I don't want to hang out with you."
"Baby," Korra looked at the spread in front of her. "this is amazing, thank you, but I didn't feel that way. I understand family can be tricky so--"
"--so let me do this for you, please."
Korra's eyes found their place in yours. Your gaze was soft, your eyes glassy as if you were going to cry. Your skin looked perfect in the candlelight. Your cheeks looked so squishable and your lips definitely looked kissable. She nodded. She grabbed her cup of water and held it across the table for cheers.
You did the same.
"To our special night?" Korra prompted.
You nodded. "To our special night." --

I’d Choose You in Every Universe
Pairing(s) - Lin Beifong x AFAB!Reader (no gender terms are used but female genetalia is present)  / Kuvira x Reader (mentioned?)
Request: can i request lin getting jealous when she sees someone flirting with y/n and how she would react?
summary: Lin catches you getting a bit too close for comfort with another woman.
warnings:  Drinking, mentions of alcohol, filthy porn with plot, fingering, eating out, vulgar language(?)
word count: 2,151 (i got carried away…)
A/N:  this is written to be in the time period of season 3 when Kuvira was just a shy guard that didn’t want world domination and Bataar Jr. and her were never a thing. Also, my first smut fic, starting off strong.
There will be a pt. 2! Idk when i’ll write it though…
ao3 - masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was Suyin’s annual Zaofu anniversary party. Celebrating the day that Zaofu had become its own city (and a successful one at that). She had all of her close friends and family members come by her house and by the end of the day, the house would be jam packed with people. All of them wearing different earth kingdom themed clothing and formal outfits. She would allow most of her guards to join the party along as long as they had been taking turns watching over Zaofu and not ingesting any alcohol.
Lin had decided to bring you as her plus one this year and the year before to the party. Lin dressed in one of her green earth kingdom suits and you accompanied her in a long green dress that had a slit by your left leg showing a small amount of your thigh.
The sky was still blue, and the sun was still out. The two of you had arrived and entered through the large metal doors. Suyin immediately ran over to the two of you, enveloping your neck in a hug. You wrap your hands around her to give her a small hug back.
“Y/N! So glad to see you again.” Su says as she lets go of her hold on you and walks over to her sister.
“And Lin, I’m glad to see you as well.” Suyin wraps her arms around Lin’s waist, her head falling onto Lin’s chest as Lin raises her hands in the air, unsure of what to do.
Lin looks over to you with wide eyes and a face of uncertainty. You smile at her tilting your head a bit to signal that she should hug Su back. Lin grumbles a bit but twists her mouth into a small smile as she pats her sisters back a little. “Glad to see you too, Su.” Lin says with a small voice full of genuinity.
Su pulls back with a large grin plastered on her face. She grabs yours and Lin’s hands in her own and says, “Well, there are refreshments and food inside, go make yourself at home. I’ve got more people to greet.”
Tumblr media
It was getting late. The sun had already gone down and the party goers had gone from setting off fireworks and dancing throughout the night to settling in Suyin’s massive home and enjoying drinks while chatting with one another.
Lin had been pulled away from you some time ago to talk to some of her old colleagues. You settled down in the corner of one of the green couches, a drink in your hand as you watched Lin across the room talk to a bunch of old men in suits.
“This seat taken?” A deep voice pulls you out of your thoughts as you snap your head up to see a girl in Zaofu uniform and a thick braid to accessorize her.
“Oh, no. Not at all.” You respond as you scooch over a bit more to let the girl sit next to you.
“Kuvira.” She holds her hands out allowing you to shake her hand. “Y/N.” You respond with a small smile. Her calloused hands holding a strong grip over your much smaller hands in comparison.
“I’ve never seen you around.” You say to her as you let go of her grasp. “Yeah, last year I was patrolling a lot during this time. Some of the other guards wanted me to cover for them so I never had the time to attend the party.” She responds smiling back at you.
You nod in her response and take a sip of your drink. “Champagne?” She asks and you look at her confused until you realize she was talking about your drink. “Oh, no. This is apple juice. I’m pretty lightweight, I’ve already had enough glasses of wine.” You say as you chuckle and Kuvira laughs lightly with you.
In all honesty, you and Lin were like polar opposites. Drinking was not an exception. Lin could hammer down alcohol like they’re water and come back completely sober. You, on the other hand, could barely tolerate vodka.
You and Kuvira continue talking until one specifically funny joke warrants a loud burst of laughter from you. This grabs Lin’s attention as she looks over the shoulder of her colleague and sees you laughing as Kuvira’s hand had made its way behind the couch and over your shoulder. Her other hand inching towards your thigh.
At this sight, Lin excuses herself and walks towards the couch the two of you were sitting on and grabs your arm. “I’m feeling a bit tired, I think we should go.” Lin says coldly looking at you and purposefully ignoring Kuvira.
“Oh, sure. Sorry Kuvira, I’ve got to go.” You say standing up but before you could leave, Kuvira takes a hold of your hand. You look down, shocked as Kuvira stares up at you and says, “I had fun talking with you Y/N. Maybe next time you come over we can talk again?” You open your mouth to respond but Lin pulls you away by your waist hurriedly. You stare behind you to see Kuvira looking at you dumbfoundedly and you lip sync out a “I’m sorry.”
“Lin, what the hell was that?” You say as you turn your attention back to Lin and you see her scowling with her eyebrows furrowed. You quickly shut your mouth realizing she was angry as she pushes you into one of Suyin’s guest rooms.
She slams the door closed with one of her legs as her mouth latches onto yours, kissing you fervently. Her hand metal bends the lock closed. You reciprocate eagerly attempting to match her fierceness. Lin breaks the kiss as she starts peppering kisses down your neck. Your lips bruised and red as you pant for air.
“Lin what–” You attempt to utter out as Lin cuts you off. “Up.” She says one word and you know what she means. You jump onto her arms, her rough large hands holding onto your ass as she starts to kiss down your cleavage. She backs you onto the bed and throws you down.
Lin takes off her suit jacket in one quick motion. She leans in to kiss you again but you hold her shoulders and stop her before she can get any closer. “Lin, as much as I love how rough you’re going with me right now, what’s wrong?” You said as you looked into her eyes. Lin’s tough facade falls and she leans in closer, making your arms bend in front of her shoulders. She whispers out, “Just, please. We don’t have to continue if you don’t want to but…” She says with her eyes lidded and her breathing slowed down. The moonlight shines onto her face and her cute expression along with her begging makes you want to shed a tear.
You lean in and break the distance kissing her slowly. She kisses back, much slower this time. As if she was savoring you and memorizing the shape of your lips. Her hands gently hold onto your waist, one arm going around to unzip the dress.
As she slowly takes off your dress you dip your head into her neck to kiss and mark her. She groans out, leaning her neck to the side to let you have more room.
You kick your dress off and Lin leans back to admire your braless body. She groans at the sight and leans down to mark her way down to your breasts leaving purple and red spots. She takes a nipple in her mouth and slowly moves her tongue around. A hand fondling with your other breast. You moan out as your back arches to move your breasts closer to her.
Her free hand travels down to your underwear and cups your pussy. You whimper out a please as you try to lower yourself to get more friction from her hand.
She chuckles as she leans back away from your breasts. You whimper out at the cold air hitting your hardened nipples. Lin stares down at your face, admiring your neediness and lidded eyes. Your lips plump and glossy under the moonlight. “God you’re gorgeous.” She mutters out bringing one hand to cup your face and the other still holding onto your underwear. You lean your face into her touch.
“Who does this pussy belong to?” She asks you as she starts to rub her thumb on your clothed clit making you buck your hips and moan “You, Lin. You.”
“You sure it’s not that Zaofu guard that was eyeing you like a hungry pig?” Lin growls leaning close to your ears. You shake your head eagerly, not trusting your voice to respond.
“You were so close to her tonight, I almost thought you’d forgotten who you belong to.” She whispers coldly into your ears. “No, I belong to you, Lin. Only you.” You squeak out.
With that, she pushes your underwear to the side and presses a finger inside of you. You immediately moan out her name. “Please, more.” You whimper out, wrapping your arms around her shoulders.
Lin inserts an extra finger in and slowly pushes in and out making you whine out in neediness. “You just suck up my fingers so well. You were begging to be whored out like this weren’t you?” She says as she gets up and cups your chin, forcing you to open your mouth. She removes her fingers from your vagina and puts them in your mouth. You close your mouth and suck on her fingers, cleaning them off for her. “Good job.” She says as she starts to make her way towards your thighs. She pulls off your underwear and you help by bucking your hips up. She admires your bare pussy and smooth skin.
“Wait.” You say as she starts to lean in. She sits back up staring at you wondering if she did something wrong. “I think it’s rather unfair how much clothes you’ve got on and how little I have.” You say sitting up, drawing a finger down her blouse. She chuckles and starts unbuttoning her shirt as you lean back in to capture her lips. Lin slips in her tongue after your fight for dominance (not really a fight as you let her win rather quickly).
She slips off her blouse and leans back to take off her pants. Once her pants are off, she pushes you back down onto the bed and grips your thighs.
“Give me a word.” She says as she lingers just barely over your clit. Her hot breath sends sensations through your body. “Red.” You whisper out, breathless. She nods and captures your clit in her mouth, skillfully licking and sucking on it. You buck your hips up moaning. She removes her grasp on your thighs and holds your stomach down.
Your hands move down to her hair and you tug on it moaning and whimpering her name. Lin would usually tie your hands up by the headboard during this time but she was enjoying the tugging right now (although she would deny it if you ever asked her). She then inserts two fingers into your hole, fingering you with precision and hitting your g-spot every time.
“You taste so good,” she mutters into your pussy and her words make your vagina clench around her fingers. “So glad I get this pussy all to myself,” she groans out and you whimper at her words.
“Look at me,” she says, making your head look down at her, your eyes meeting as she eats you out.
“Lin…” you pant out, unable to finish your sentence. You don’t need to though, Lin can sense you’re getting close and she says, “Let go, let go for me.” And you do just that. You orgasm with a high scream like moan, yelling out her name.
She eases you out of your high and slowly slips her fingers out causing you to whimper at the emptiness. She gets up and you see her lips drenched with your cum. You blush under her gaze.
“Getting shy now? Don’t worry, this isn’t the end.” She says, leaning down to kiss you, giving you a taste of yourself on her tongue.
Tumblr media
After many more orgasms and many more rounds. She finally relents and pulls you into her arms. “I’ll start the bath,” she says slowly getting up. “No…just stay with me a little longer,” you respond dozing off into sleep. “If I do that, I’m afraid we’ll both fall asleep,” she says, chuckling and pulling away completely from you, resulting in a whine coming out of your mouth. She kisses your forehead and runs off to the bathroom, soon after, you hear the sound of water coming out of the faucet.
You sigh dreamily and think that in every other universe, you’d choose her over everyone else.

You hadn't been with the group from the beginning, but you still were quite close with everyone. You'd met Mako and Bolin a while ago when you had to fight against them in a Pro Bending tournament, and even though you were adversaries, you got along pretty well outside the ring.
You'd lost touch with them until one day you ran into Mako and he practically begged you to spend some time with him to catch up a bit, which eventually led to you meeting the girls and also Wu, and later joining the whole group.
When you first re-encountered with Mako, Korra was still away from Republic City, and you were extremely excited about meeting her. And from the very beginning, you were mesmerized at the sight of her, she was extremely beautiful to you, and you sometimes found yourself thinking a little too much about her.
You thought that there was no point in telling her how you felt since you were convinced she liked Asami, so you just stayed quiet while your feelings grew with every passing minute.
You didn't know that Korra felt the same way, though. She was intrigued by you from the first moment she saw you, but after being away from her friends for three years, she thought that maybe there was something going on between you and Mako, and she didn't want to come in between you two. So it was this never-ending cycle of confusion and wrong thoughts that neither of you seemed to be able to escape from.
You loved spending time alone with her. It didn’t happen very often, but when it did your heart just burst out with joy, and sometimes you couldn’t help but daydream about being with her, but you knew that there was no point in that, not when she liked someone else. You both spent a while without saying anything about your feelings while trying to hide them as they grew stronger but with the imminent danger that Kuvira meant, you thought that maybe it would end up being too late. Still, you didn’t say anything at all.
When the day came to fight against Kuvira, once Asami’s father managed to cut a whole on in Kuvira’s suit, Mako, Bolin and you headed to the power core of the machine and fought the guards that were there. You tried to follow Bataar Jr.’s instructions but it didn’t work out, but when Bolin said that the only thing he knew about spirit vines was that they exploded easily, you and Mako knew what you had to do. You could both lightning bend, so you told Bolin to take the guards somewhere safe. He was hesitant at first, but you promised you’d get out of there as soon as possible.
You both shoot lightning at the power core and ended up making it explode. You tried to escape, but you were both left unconscious by the backlash of the spirit core energy. Luckily, Bolin came back for the two of you and managed to save you. Mako managed to wake up shortly after, but you were still passed out, even when Korra came out of the new spirit portal with Kuvira. They were all happy about winning the fight, but as soon as Korra saw you, she was afraid that maybe it was too late.
She tried to heal you, and could even feel the tension and pain all over your body. Once she was done, you opened your eyes for a bit before closing them again.
“(Y/N)? Please, wake up!” Begged the girl, but you just couldn’t listen to her.
“Are they…?” Began asking Bolin, with tears already threatening to fall from his eyes.
“They’re alive, Bolin! But I think it’s going to be a while until they wake up,” she said.
A few days later you finally woke up. You were in an unknown room, and when you moved your head a little, you saw that Mako was sitting in a chair right next to your bed. You let out a small groan and he immediately woke up.
“(Y/N)! Oh, you’re awake!” He said while quickly getting up to sit on the bed, while also grabbing one of your hands.
“Mako? W-What happened? Where am I?”
“You’re in my apartment, (Y/N),” he answered. “Are you okay? Do you need anything? You’ve been asleep for a few days.”
“The last thing I remember is you and me inside that robot,” you said, still trying to comprehend everything around you. “Then suddenly everything went dark.”
“Yeah, Bolin got us out of there, and then Korra healed you but you remained unconscious until now.”
“Wow,” you said once he was finished. “Where is she? Is she okay?”
“She’s fine, I haven’t seen her a lot since I was here taking care of you,” he replied. Your heart broke a little bit at the thought of her not coming to see you and you even wanted to cry a bit, but you were feeling so many things at the same time that you were just extremely confused. “Zhu-Li and Varrick are getting married,” commented Mako.
“Wait what?” You asked surprised. “When?”
“In a few days, you’re obviously invited but we didn’t know if you’d be awake, so...” You slowly nodded at his words.
“So… would you be my date to the wedding?” You asked. “Platonically speaking, of course, you know?”
He let out a small giggle before responding. “Of course, (Y/N), plus I know you like Korra way too much,” he said. You opened your eyes and stared at him. He looked back at you and just shrugged his shoulders. “I guess you’re a bit too obvious, my friend.”
You were wearing a black suit with red details, and you made mako wear a red tie so you two could match. However, once the ceremony was over, you drifted away from everyone; you were feeling a bit sad and you didn’t want to ruin such a beautiful night, so you figured it would be best if you just spent some time by yourself.
Suddenly you felt some steps right behind you, and when you turned around you saw Korra walking towards you. You turned back around and let out a small sigh.
“Hi, (Y/N). Can I sit here?” She asked. You nodded and she sat by your side. “How are you feeling?”
“A bit better than when I first woke up,” you admitted. “Mako told me that you healed me, I wanted to thank you for that.”
“You don’t have to thank me, (Y/N),” she told you. There was a small silence between you two. “I guess he also told you that I didn’t really visit you,” she let out.
“Yeah, he did,” you mumbled.
“I’m sorry about that, I just couldn’t see you like that,” she said. “It was too much, and I didn’t want to think that I could lose you.” You blushed a little at her words, understanding her a lot more than before.
“I’m not going anywhere, Korra. Because, to be honest, I couldn’t really stand being away from you either.”
She smiled at your words and let out a sigh. “So, how’s everything with Mako? He was really worried about you too,” she asked you.
“Oh, everything’s fine,” you answered. “I’m really glad I have a friend like him in my life.”
“Wait, what?” She looked at you confused. “I thought you and Mako were together, like dating.”
“What? No, oh no, we’re just friends.”
“So you don’t like him?”
“No, I mean not like that. I can’t believe you thought I did,” you said while giggling. “It’s like, imagine if you weren’t actually dating Asami and someone thought you were, it’s a bit funny.”
“But I’m not dating Asami,” she replied.
“Wait, really? But do you like her or something?”
“Asami and I are just friends, (Y/N).”
“So you’re telling me that I’ve been hiding my feelings for you just for nothing?” You mumbled a bit too loud. You realized she heard you and for a few seconds, you both looked at each other, wondering if what was happening was actually real.
“You have feelings for me?”
“Kind of… I mean, I do, but I totally get it if you don’t, I don’t want to make you uncomfortable or anything,” you said.
“But what if I have feelings for you too?” She asked you. Suddenly your eyes lit up while looking at her face, thinking that there was no way this was actually happening.
“Please don’t get my hopes up like that, Korra.”
“I’m being serious, I do have feelings for you, but I thought you were with Mako, so that’s why I didn’t say anything.”
You quickly got on your feet with excitement. “I never said anything because I thought you were with Asami!” She got up too and grabbed both of your hands.
“I can’t believe this is actually happening. Am I dreaming?”
“If you are, then I’m having the same dream.” You turned your gaze to the side for a moment and took a deep breath. “Is it okay if I kiss you?”
“I thought you’d never ask.”

You felt as stupid as a raccoon-toad.
When the  avatar came to collect you to travel back to Zaofu, you were excited because you were going back home, even if you were being punished for your crimes. Unfortunately, Suyin had extended the invitation to the other individuals who were also from Zaofu. It seemed that she was sentimental and decided that every one needed a second chance.
So you were stuck with a bunch of people that you were not entirely fond of, especially when they heard of what happened to Kuvira. After that, you could just feel the glares they sent your way, which was annoying because that’s all they did. They just stared and would raise their stupid eyebrows. Why couldn’t they just get over it and shove it? It didn’t help that your injury still required attendance by healers and physical therapy. So even if you wanted to avoid all attention, it was a little pointless when they said you could only apply yourself for a couple of hours before resting.
There was a constant dull throb in your side, no matter the number of healers. Sometimes it would chill out but when you were awake for too long or when you skipped a meal, it would come back and stiffen your back. It was a constant battle and there were some times that you just wished that Kuvira double tapped you. It could've saved a lot of emotional and physical turmoil.
So, back to the situation on hand. You and several others were on a train that would stop in the heart of the Metal Clan. After that, each person would be sent to a camp that was ran by a horse faced individual who lacked the sympathy of a real person. You were told to call him General Zheng, if you ever saw him, and after that he left to go talk to the head of the guard. You and the others were hustled into a medical looking outlet, and each person was given a platinum band around each left ankle.
“It’s to make sure you don’t leave and to make sure you obey. Can’t have you running around like hen-ducks, right?”
ugh.
..
It had been several days since you had arrived in Zaofu. By then, everyone had been stationed with their community service and you started to get used to the schedule given. General Zhen said since you had to serve the community as your punishment, you could choose your schedule, basically saying, “How long do you really wanna do this?”. You could remain under order until your sentence was done or you could rush it out and leave it early. As early as you could anyway with a 25 year sentence. You decided to go with the latter; even with your injury, you thought that you could cut it by a year or two which sounded pretty minimal but you’d take anything at this point. At 10am you would wake up and eat then head towards the outskirts of the ring. There, you would begin to bend the metal together to create cohesive pieces for other workers to make into the plates that would create the dome. Others were tasked with mining the actual ore, and they were even paid for that, but you had to create the joints for them. Sitting and concentrating for about 8 hours a day would cause you to slouch and then you’d get yelled at by the healers. Who were scarier than a guy on cactus juice. You’d visit the healers once a week and they would see if your scar had healed or if it was infected. After seeing them, you would head over to the park where they held physical therapy outside. It was really nice to see all of nature while an old lady calmly coaxes you into the tree pose. Gaining balance was the hardest because your brain was trying to compensate for the strain in your side. You also kinda wanted to punch the lady because that’s is as far as I go stop pushing me areyoutuchingmerightnowareyouserious.
Needless to say, it was nice to go back to the plain gray walls of your (holding cell) room and just breathe quietly by yourself.
Then you got used to your routine which was a mistake because then something had to go and mess it up. And who else would it be if not for the very person who put you here?
..
Madam Jilpa was going to be the death of you. That near death experience you had? Insignificant to the pain that this woman was gracing you with. You wanted to strangle her. She was super nice about your wound, saying how it was healing well and then she manhandled you into a position to “stretch your muscles, you’re awfully sore, my dear.” You rolled your shoulders and exhaled as you left the park. Ever since you came back, people avoided you like the plague and it made the anklet a little more tighter each time. Doesn’t help that it was platinum so it just seemed that it was mocking you every time you caught a glimpse of it. Stupid thing. Stupid city. Stupid community service. Stupid- who is that?
You were strolling through the main street of the city, heading to the store when you saw her. Kuvira. The devil herself. Was I thinking about her? Is that why she’s here? Oh god, she can’t see me, what do i do? Where am I gonna hide? You panicked and slid into the nearest shop, which happened to be a tea shop. Luckily there was a line so you didn’t look too odd. Unluckily, the shop had big glass windows. So as much as you could see her, she could possibly see you? Maybe? You dipped next to the door and peeked out, wondering why Kuvira would be away from the estate. Then you saw the entire Beifong family, whelp. That answers your question. No better way to survey someone than surround them with powerful earthbenders. As your eyes glazed over their faces, you saw Bataar Jr. and Kuvira at the back of the pack. You couldn’t tell if they were talking but they looked like they were standing next to each other, and the evil voice in your head wouldn’t stop talking about how they looked. Together.
Not wanting to add mental therapy to your list of visitation rights, you decided to exit the tea shop and go back the way you came. Back to your plain gray room. Because who needs closure when you have, uh, gray pillows and plain bagels?
After that train wreck, it didn’t stop.
Suyin (it felt wrong to call her Su) had talked to the General and they made a plan to talk to each of the prisoners. To really decide if they are evil or not. You could make that decision with the way that these people would play Pai Sho, some of them were just cruel and malicious and a better punishment would be to shove em in the boiling rock.
Unfortunately you were on that list of visits and it was 3 days from now. They even accepted letters from family members. So that you could read how disappointed they are, one more time. But! It was written so it had sentimental value. You felt nauseous when you saw your name scrawled on the letter. Better now than later, it would seem.
Y/n,
I remember the day you were born. You were a screaming ball of anger and you wouldn’t stop crying until you were placed on my chest. Then you shushed and swooned. I knew then and there that I would love you till the day I die and every day after. And it seems that even now, I feel the same way. But, I know now that some paths are a little crowded and you lost your way. I’m sorry I wasn’t there to help you find the light in this dim world, but I just wanted you to know that you are my light. And that is all that matters. When you first left, I was left with irreplaceable pain because in a way, you had left me. But you were just touching the ground and spreading your fingers. You thought you knew best and I’m proud of you for sticking with it. But now that you see the end of this journey, you must stick with the repercussions. That is what it means to find the light and settle with it. You face your decisions and lay with the judgements. I’m glad that you came back to Zaofu. Hopefully, one day, I’ll be able to see your beautiful face again.
Love always,
Mom and Dad
A chip had left your shoulder. Thank the spirits. You could feel the wetness on your cheeks from the compassion from your parents. Perhaps they were right.
Bracing yourself with these words of encouragement, you faced Suyin with strong shoulders and a flinch in your side (cause, honestly, the tea isn’t that good at keeping the pain down).
When you were growing up, your parents had tried everything to stop you from sneaking out of the house. They tried metal bars, they tried positive reinforcements, they tried every parental trick in the book. They couldn’t keep you from whatever entranced you from the house. The only person who ever humored you and whoever treated you with some semblance of respect was Kuvira, or ‘Vee, when you were kids. Granted, she also had a rocky relationship but what’s a pot and what’s a kettle? When your parents finally noticed where you were going when you left, they talked to Su about it. If they couldn’t keep you down, they’ll just make sure that nothing bad happens. Because of that, you would spend many hours on the Beifong estate, surrounding yourself with other earthbenders and playing games with the other kids. As you grew, you started to notice how Opal would talk about the cute boy in her class or how Wing and Wei would blush when the dance recitals were held. But, as you got older, all you could think about was how pretty ‘Vee’s eyes were. How green they were, and how much they sparkled when she talked about how she finally joined the guard. How the tank tops she wore outlined her shoulders. You never noticed that when other people were looking outside, that you had found your view right in front of you. Su noticed of course, being the romantic that she was, she got so excited whenever her children were talking about love. Su knew you well, and when Kuvira left Zaofu, she had a feeling that you would leave with her. She had tried so hard to understand you, but she was so angry. Angry at Bataar Jr, angry at Kuvira, angry about everything, that she forgot that you got the short end of the stick too.
So she was nervous too when she invited you over.
The door had opened by then even when you hoped that it would remain shut for a little while longer. A guard had escorted you from your quarters into the matriarch’s afternoon room and she was seated near a window that looked to the sprawling estate of the Metal Clan. She looked up at you and smiled softly, and even from the doorway, you could tell that she had gotten older. Maybe not physically, but her eyes were a little wiser and a little more battle worn.
You had settled into the opposite chair, with some grace that you managed to muster, and she had offered you tea. It smelled of lemon and blueberries and you couldn’t help but relax. You couldn’t help it, seeing Su as a mother figure made you wistful of all the memories you shared. With those came remorse and you immediately felt guilty.
“Thank you for allowing me to come back to Zaofu, Su-Suyin, I am eternally grateful that you have allowed me back after what I did,” you said. After your stutter, it seemed your words came in a rush, unable to be held back.
“I wanted to apologize for leaving in the first place. I didn’t realise that I was blind to all the hurt that occurred when this thing started and I should’ve noticed when the first person that was wounded was you. I thought that I knew what I was doing when I left because I thought Ku-” you inhaled sharply, “I thought she would be the answer. It was wrong of me to place such big standards on her without thinking of the consequences. I know now that I followed her out of personal feeling, and not logic. I will forever be humbled by the events that happened and I just hope that you may forgive me. I am incredibly regretful of turning my back on you Su, I wish my eyes had stayed open a little longer.”
You were a little choked up and you finally pulled your eyes away from your tea cup to look at Su, finding her eyes already on you. Tears were pooling in her eyes and she was softly smiling.
Laughing softly, she speaks.
“You don’t speak often but when you do, you speak,” she sighs and looks outside again.
“I must admit that the most heartbreaking thing was watching Kuvira walk out because i knew that if she left, you would too. It's been that way since you were children. Little younglings running across the estate, throwing rocks and giggling to yourselves. I knew when she left that you would go. You follow the ones you love, you want them in your lives so you do what you must. I understand the feeling well.”
She looks at you and stands from her seat, walking around the table and kneeling at your side.
Softly, she places her hands on yours and squeezes.
“When I saw you on the floor, my mind ran a thousand miles. But until your testimony before your trial, I never imagined. The Kuvira that you love exists, but the Kuvira you followed are not the same. I’m sorry that I didn’t get the chance to warn you. People change right before your very eyes and it’s hard to adapt. I love you as if you were my own, Y/n, and I forgive you. As a parent, I am disappointed but that’s to be expected.”
Smiling you lurched forward and squished her against yourself. It didn’t take you long to become a little touch-starved from being in prison but man, hugging Su felt like landing on cotton and honey. Squeezing your shoulders, Su pulls back.
“Y/n, I’m telling you now what I had to tell myself. The right people get second chances. Currently, Kuvira and Bataar Jr are working with Korra and her friends to stop the remaining forces of the United army. They are good people, and I believe that they can do good things. But it’s up to them. You must wait for them to come to you. This isn’t in your hands now. If they want to change, they must do it themselves. That is my advice to you: good people will come around, they just need time.”
She gave you one last hug and released you. Stepping back she smiled, her eyes finally matching.
“I don’t want to take up all of your day, so I’ll let you go for now.”
You said your goodbyes with Su and the guard escorted you off of the estate.
It didn’t hit you until then that you didn’t flinch everytime she said Kuvira. Taking what Su and your parents said, you lifted your shoulders and promised yourself that you would change your days. You would begin the days with a smile and you would end the days with satisfaction.
Days had passed by then and your mood had only gotten better. Physical therapy was going better, your side had stopped constantly throbbing and was starting to scar over. Blues and yellows surrounded the tissue but you were able to go up stairs without passing out! Checking the integrity of the metal plates was what filled your afternoons but those passed by too. Soon, the petals of the metal clan were slowly starting to form and the construction was almost complete.
One day, when you were coming back from your shift, you had heard that Kuvira had returned. Something about brainwashing and how Asami was kidnapped? It sounded crazy to you but when you thought about it, there was this one doctor who wanted to control a person's thinking. Luckily, ‘Vee thought it was too barbaric and the idea was shelved. Korra was able to put a stop to it and her friends were returned back to normal with both charges returning back to Zaofu. It seemed that that test had proved to the rest of the Beifong family that they had taken a step towards fixing their past and wanting to grasp their future. You were happy that they decided to redeem themselves. It made sleep a little easier knowing that your ‘Vira was still in there.
Your brain wasn’t helpful though. As successful physical therapy was, it never helped the nightmares. It didn’t help the murmurs of your brain and the self deprecating remarks. It was exhausting. (How come she gets a happy ending? Wasn’t I supposed to be a part of it? I thought she loved me? I thought-) Yeah, well, you thought a lot of things. Just eat your toast and inspect that metal. Spirits sake.
Flowers were delivered to you.
Lilacs. Their fragile petals and purple centers called to you and you froze looking at them. They were placed in your quarters along with mail from your parents. You weren’t allowed to send mail yet but you could still receive them. But flowers?
Listen, as an earthbender and a metalbender, you have grown to know the planet pretty well. From the flimsy sand to the swollen stone beneath you, you feel the breath of the earth in your bones.
But that doesn’t mean you know a single thing about flowers. You know that they are pretty and that roses can be yellow in certain parts of the continent but lilacs? Pretty, purple, dainty, flowers? Confusion couldn’t even begin to explain the words you were feeling. Don’t flowers have meanings too? You have never received flowers before, you had convinced everyone around you that you would rather punch a boulder than receive flowers. And yet here they are.
It seems as if they are staring at you. Glaring at you. Laughing at you. (Who calls themselves an earthbender but can’t tell the difference in flowers? How stupid of-)
Snapping yourself from your stupor you spin around and walk right into the door jam.
Son of a flying-
You corner Hahn later on that night. Word in the prison yard says that when he was a free man, he was a farmer who lived next to a guy who happened to be a gardner of flowers. Which flowers didn’t matter but the fact that you kind of knew someone that had knowledge of flowers seemed like a win.
You plopped yourself on the seat in front of him and stared into his aged eyes. He had dark spotted skin from his field days and the wrinkles around his eyes suggested that he knew many things. A trustworthy source. (Your only source)
“Do you know anything about flowers Hahn?”
“Why do you want to know?”
“I got two days worth of desert that has your name on it if you tell me a thing or two.” Interest peaked, he leaned forward.
“I have a reputation kid, I ain’t just gonn’ blab about flowers to anyone. I don’t wann’ seem like a flim, ya know?”
“I ain’t gonna talk, I’ll even slide another honey cake in there.”
He thinks for a moment or two before nodding. You slide him the desert from today and he places it into his pocket. Leaning forward, you can smell sunshine and grass from him.
“What do you know about this?”
You had gently picked a single bud from your bouquet to show him. You weren’t positive if they were lilacs but they were purple and how many flowers were actually purple?
Humming for a moment, he responds. “. . .Syringa, if I remember correctly. Sold like hot cakes. There’s about several different kinds. This one here is just the smaller kind. If you tryna woo a lass, you call ‘em Lilacs. They got a strong scent though, so careful on the nose.”
Nodding, you ask, “does it have meaning?”
He shrugs, handing the bud back to you. “ Well, it could mean a lot of things. In the younger years, you’d give it to your lass to remind ‘em of your love. Like, a new beginning of  love, remindin’ them of a new stage.”
He then looks you in the eye and glares. “Not a word about this hog wash or I’m stealing your pillow.”
You laugh, “you have my lips sealed, H.”
You hadn’t received any more bouquets and your pillows remained intact. New love? Who in the world could that be? You kept your eyes peeled for lurkers when you were on breaks and besides the common glare, nobody else seemed to be paying attention. So where did they come from? You had formed a vase with clay in order to keep your flowers and you were a little tickled to find that they lit up the room. Hmph.
Kuvira was two seconds away from suffocating herself. When did it get so hard to be a good person?
The amount of guilt that lifted from her shoulders from the trial was impalpable and she felt almost as confident as 4 years ago. The Beifongs were friendly and she was able to join and attend multiple events and she was slowly learning how to be a mentally stable person. She had started seeing someone in the city and once every two weeks they would take her apart and put her back together. She was getting used to it. Slowly.
But, spirits, did she miss you.
Something would happen during the day and she would turn to see you, see how your eyebrows would raise and how you would stifle your laughter behind your hands. And then she’d turn and you wouldn’t be there. It was total whiplash, and she wasn’t used to it just yet. Dr. Moko had yet to ask about the elephant-rhino in the room and Kuvira was waiting for the day where she would ask, “why did you attempt two murders, both of which were individuals you cared about?”
What a loaded question. Kuvira wondered how she got stuck with house arrest and not prison.
On one hand, it's an easy question. She thought she was doing a good thing. Bataar Jr. happened to be in the same place as the avatar and most of the resistance when she fired the spirit weapon and at the time it seemed like a good idea. (Not a good defense, she’s glad this question wasn’t raised during her trial). On the other hand. . .
Her soul would wither when she thought about. . .the. . kiss.
She felt that she was ignited and smothered at the same time. When she felt you melt into her arms, it was intoxicating. Your smell had surrounded her and you felt good in her hands. How she wanted to stay there forever. She wished that she could have stayed there forever. But the voice in her head was blood thirsty and on a victory roll and couldn’t be stopped. It was no excuse but the pain that Kuvira felt when she saw you slowly bleed out in her arms was so much that she zoned out and went on autopilot.
In one of the sessions she has with Dr. Moko, she mentions the voice with high reluctance. Dr. Moko says that the instinctual desires in her subconscious had risen to the challenge and took over, blocking out rational and emotional thought. This discussion had encompassed several sessions and because of that, Kuvira was able to gain control and become a little more independent with her thoughts. It gave her a sense of control, knowing that the Beifong family could trust her again, knowing that Korra wasn’t wrong when she said that they were alike. She had hope and all the split ends of her misdeeds were tying themselves together. But y/n. . .
You plagued her mind like a wine-stained carpet. So naturally, she (subtly) asks Su what happened after Korra stopped the spirit vine weapon. Su fills her in on the hospital visits, the trial, the physical therapy, the letters, everything.
That week Kuvira stomps into Dr. Moko’s office and says, “I need to talk about y/n.”
And so she does.
She sends you flowers.
Flowers?! She doesn’t have a flower bone in her body, why in the world did she pick out flowers? She even had a mind to pick out a specific type, lilacs: new love. She wanted to ask the florist for a bouquet that would convey “I’m sorry that I stabbed you, I am becoming a mentally stable person and I really wanna kiss you again and you are really pretty.”
Kuvira figures that lilacs are good enough.
. . .
It had been about two weeks since you received the flowers. They had started to wilt and you couldn’t help but get sad. You still had not figured out who sent them but a tiny part of you hoped that maybe she sent them. That she still thought of you while she’s learning how to be herself. It was selfish of you to think so, but you couldn’t help it. Kuvira was a major part of your life and to be without her made your heart ache. But you made do. After all, you still had 24 years of community service. . . you sigh. That doesn’t make it better.
You’re walking towards the park to take part in your therapy session. Several other people had come and gone and it was nice to see people learning how to overcome their struggles. You were growing stronger every day. Madam said that soon, you would be able to fully do the physical side of bending again. You could spar soon! You were starting to get antsy with all the chill meditation that Madam Jilpa was having you do. The bruising was gone on your side and you could extend your arms fully without twinges or aches.
You step onto familiar green grass and take off your shoes. Feeling the earth beneath your feet helped ground you when trying new therapy techniques that had you worried that your legs would suddenly give out on you. After placing your shoes next to your bag you look up and see your teacher and several others. There were more people today than usual which was odd. You couldn’t remember if there was a sudden climb of injuries in the last week but alas, more people meant less one-on-one time from the old lady herself. You walk over to a spot of grass and plop down, stretching your legs out in front of you. Planning on doing basic stretches you exhale-
“Need a partner?”
-and immediately inhale. You open your eyes and swirl around looking at the individual. Kuvira stands there relaxed, if not a little stiff, and is looking at you with her hands behind her back. The naive voice in your head screams in victory and you nod your head, still silent. Kuvira sits next to you and out of panic, you look around seeing everyone else doing the buddy system. Some were wearing the same clothing patterns as Kuvira meaning that they came over as a group. Meaning this wasn’t accidental. Meaning this was planned. Meaning this was the worst day of your entire life. Perhaps you should just run away and become a no name in the wilds, because then you’d be able to cope with the situation instead of just stewing in silence.
Kuvira places her knees together and leans forward, stretching her head towards her legs as she exhales. Knowing that Madam Jilpa would swat you, you slowly do the same. After you scootch further away, of course.
It’s painfully awkward. As Madam Jilpa begins, others join in with soft whispers and mutters of conversation. But the bubble that surrounds you is so tense that it doesn’t help the panic spasms that start to creep up your spine.
After coming back up from a lateral position, your eyes roam and they meet Kuvira’s. She’s looking at you fully, and not even Madam’s loud “Next!” breaks her attention. She’s looking at you and she stops her exercise to face you completely. Her eyes lower and she looks at your right side where your shirt had bunched up showing the scar tissue. Shocked, you pull your shirt down and shuffle a little farther away.
She speaks so softly you probably wouldn’t have heard her had you not been so attuned with her whole being.
“I’m sorry.”
You inhale and nod, bracing your attention forward and copying Madam’s next movement.
You try incredibly hard to ignore her stare for the rest of the session but it’s so heavy and so thick. At some point, Madam introduces a new position and spirits does it pull a muscle that you didn’t realise you had. It starts with your back on the ground, which is easy enough, and then you lift your hips and turn to the side. Keeping your shoulders to the ground, your head turns the opposite way. You flinch when it strains the muscles in your side. Your legs begin to quiver when a hand settles over your knee and brings your legs away from the ground, making the stretch more shallow. Your eyes see Kuvira as she holds your legs.
“Don’t do it too deep, you’ll sprain something. Start here.”
Following that, she lowers your legs again but into a place that doesn’t make you flinch in pain.
You missed her touch, you realise. You missed how softly she would hold you. Your eyes start to water when you realise how fucked up this is. She is right there in front of you, and all you can think about is how betrayed you felt. You never got the closure you needed from her and it’s being revealed as she helps you stretch. You’re silently crying while she places your legs down and helps you into a seated position.
“I should have visited you some time ago. I wanted to apologize to you, for wounding you and for leaving you alone when all you did was trust me. I misplaced your trust and I will forever be in your debt for doing so. I am incredibly sorry y/n,” she says as she looks into your eyes.
You sniffle as she grabs your hands. Squeezing them, you respond.
“Thank you, ‘Vee.”
And when you smile, the future seems a whole lot brighter.

The Guard: Chapter 2
[KUVIRA X READER ROYAL AU]
Summary: “I called you all here to announce that we have a guest arriving sometime later today. Princess Y/N of the Kingdom of Elysian” The people in the throne room looked at one another confusingly. “Their palace was under sieged and the king had to send the princess away to keep her safe from any assassination attempts. Their kingdom has done a lot for us and has proven to be great allies for generations. She’s come a long way and has been traveling for a week, I expect nothing less than for all of you to treat her as you do a member of the royal family and to attend to everything and anything, she might ask for… This poor child has already been through too much.” There was silence in the throne room for a while, as they let the information sink in. “Dismissed.”

A few weeks pass and you start to slowly ease into life in the Kingdom of Zaofu. It was indeed an adjustment, especially whenever you were invited for meals or walks with the Beifongs. Their majesties had 5 children and because of that, there was never a dull moment whenever you were with them. It was refreshing, especially since you grew up in a rather quiet household with only one sister wich whom you got along with really well, and your father.
You started to have a soft spot for Opal. She reminded you a lot of yourself when you were younger, and she tugs at your heartstrings whenever she would do something so wholesome and so pure. You even witnessed her discover her new ability to air bend and you swear to the spirits that your heart wanted to burst out of your chest. You felt yourself silently rooting for her, wishing that everything goes well for her. Spirits know you would have turned out differently if someone rooted for you too. She just reminded you of the time you actually felt happy, and it pains your heart that it’s been such a long time that you couldn’t remember it yourself.
You were always delighted whenever the twins were around. They were skilled benders and they always seemed to break her majesty’s “no bending in the palace rule” and since they discovered Suyin’s sweet spot for you, they always ask you to cover for them, which you reluctantly do so.
Huan was a peculiar kid, “an artist” Kuvira would say with an underlying tone of mockery. Huan saw a sketch you made of Kuvira in one of the books in their library and you swear it was the first time you have ever seen this guy smile. It warmed your heart that you were the cause of it. Huan told the story of how you had talent one night over dinner and you felt your cheeks heat up when Kuvira raised an eyebrow at you. I like sketching Kuvira, big deal.
Bataar Jr. on the other hand was a different story. You found out that he had been courting Kuvira for a while but was rejected repeatedly. You didn’t know how to feel about it so you simply keep your distance from him, besides, he was the heir to the throne, any interaction you made with him could cause a stir around the palace and start marriage rumors. You did not need unnecessary stress, and you had a feeling that it was a mutual concern.
It was a warm glowing morning and you were eating breakfast in the dining hall with the Beifongs. You sat there quietly as you finished your meal when the twins suddenly burst through the doors in their training gear. “Kuvira!” Wing exclaimed bending a piece of metal disc at great speed towards Kuvira who was posed at the other end of the hall, you were about to tell Kuvira to get out of the way but you stop yourself when you see Kuvira effortlessly dodge the disc with ease and bent it back to the twins at a slower pace as to avoid accidents. You hear Suyin raise her voice slightly at the twins reminding them about the no bending in the palace rule but was yet again ignored by the twins. When Wei caught the disc, he decided to keep it in the bag he was carrying. “Good morning to the both of you too” she responded unphased, perhaps it was a common thing in their mornings? You thought watching the scenario play out “You coming to spar with us?” Wing asked and Kuvira nodded “You go ahead, I’ll catch up” she said
“It’s okay. You can go now if you want to, I’ll finish my breakfast and ask another guard to escort me, I’ll be okay.” You tell Kuvira with a gentle smile and before she could answer, Wei, cuts her off, “You should come by the training grounds and watch us! Metal bending can be even more impressive when used in combat” he suggested. And you thought about it for a moment before accepting the invitation earning a cheer from the twins and a smile from Kuvira who was proud of you for making an effort from keeping yourself from sulking in your room as you did when you first arrived. The three metal benders exit the dining hall and you go back to eating your food. “You would think that as an empress I would get some respect around here. And yet I can’t even get my twins to stop bending in the palace” Suyin huffs at her husband and the emperor simply laughs at his wife’s frustration. You silently do too.
~ ~ ~
You finish your breakfast and Opal offers to keep your company to watch them spar which you appreciated. On the way to the training grounds, Opal was telling you about how excited she was about meeting the Avatar. “The Avatar?” you ask curiously “oh yes! Mom insisted on inviting the Avatar to give me proper training. It’s kind of exciting” you feel your heart warm once more for this girl. She really did remind you of who you used to be. So lively and full of hope dreaming of nothing but to become a bender. Except for this time, she actually became one.
“Will that not require you to go back with the Avatar to the mainland?” Opal thought about it for a moment but immediately shook her head. “No, mom would never let me go” she said with a hint of sadness “do you want to?” You asked, “I don’t think that matters” she answers and you two continue walking in silence. “You know in your heart it does Opal” you say, and Opal simply shrugs. “So, how’s Zaofu been treating you?” she asks in an attempt to change the subject.
“It’s been an interesting adjustment. For starters, I was never invited to watch anyone train before” you answered. “I was always kept indoors and was never permitted to wander the grounds unless necessary.” You continued and Opal furrowed her eyebrows “that must have been so boring” she commented which earned a laugh from you. “A little bit, I admit. But I always focused my energy somewhere else. I learned how to play the piano, draw, cook, and I’ve probably read everything about anything” you say somewhat proudly. “You know how to make the best of what you’ve got then” Opal tells you with a smile.
You reach the training grounds and you were greeted by Wing and Wei calling your attention and you wave your hand to acknowledge them. Your eyes land on Kuvira who was out of her usual armor and you couldn’t help but admire her. She wore a white tank top that clung to her torso showing off her fit figure and her arms really well and you couldn’t help but imagine how muscular the captain must be underneath. Her hair was in its usual bun but this time strands were falling from it, framing her face. Her face. It was flushed, which gave her cheeks a rosy and her lips were pinker than usual. The sunbeams bounced off her skin, and your eyes accidentally land on her heaving chest which was glistening from sweat and you swear to the spirits above you felt something warm in the pit of your stomach. That is inappropriate. You were pulled from your thoughts when you felt Opal nudge you to ask if you wanted to take a seat to which you accepted. You took a seat under a gazebo where their bags were placed a few feet away from what was happening in the training grounds. Kuvira locks eyes with you for the first time since you arrived and smiles at you. Shit, there it is again… the warmth. You try to appear composed as you smiled back at her with a wave before they continued with their training.
You were in awe of everything that was happening before you. The twins were like one body as they complemented each other’s combat so perfectly. They used cable wires that were suspended to their waste as an accessory to make their fighting more efficient with a combination of traditional earth bending techniques. Kuvira on the other hand was a different kind of fighter. She moved so fluidly and so gracefully swiftly dodging the boulders that were flying towards her, barely making use of earth but instead of the metal strips, she expertly pulled from her wrists and her belt. It was a technique like you’ve never seen before. By the time the twins were panting to try and catch their breath, Kuvira looked like she was only warmed up. She was sweating a lot but evidently still had energy. Meanwhile, Wing lies down on the ground exhausted from the training and the heat. “Get up Wing! I don’t imagine your highness would simply accept defeat?” Kuvira retorted while bouncing lightly on her toes getting ready for another strike but Wing simply waves her off “How are you not tired yet?!” Wei answers back and Kuvira chuckles “Stamina” she answered.
There it is again… the warmth, but this time you weren’t aware enough to try and hide it because your breath hitched, and Opal noticed. “Are you okay Y/N?” and you simply nod and excused yourself because the heat was starting to get a little too much so she bent a little breeze towards you which to your surprise actually helped. You thanked her and you see the benders walking towards the both of you and you felt the warmth in your stomach again. Shit.
Kuvira sits beside her bag which happened to be across from you and this way you had a full close-up view of her. She took a mini towel from her back and started wiping her sweat off with it and you couldn’t help but follow the movement of the towel that was pressed against her skin. From her forehead to her neck, her chest, her arms, and the way she lifted her tank top to run the towel across her back and stomach just enough to give you a peek of what was under the garment confirming your initial thought of her muscular physique when you were able to catch a glance at her really toned stomach. This caused another surge of warmth in your body and you had to force yourself to look away.
“What kind of physical activities do you do Y/N?” Wing asked you.
“not much since I never had a proper hand in hand combat training but… I’m a pro in archery if I do say so myself” You said with a smile
“Really? But I thought you were discouraged from going outside?” Kuvira asked
“By my father’s advisors yes, father never liked the idea of that and so he would often sneak with me into the throne room at night when the entire court would be asleep and teach me a thing or two about archery until I mastered it eventually” You explained
“Sounds like one hell of a trainer” Wei commented
“He was” you say with a smile and you feel your chest tighten. Spirits I miss him.
“Maybe you can teach us something about archery and we can train you with combat” Kuvira says trying to change the topic when she notices the change in your expression, and you hesitated for a while. Constantly hesitating was starting to become a reflex for you. You were so used to being controlled and told what to do that whenever opportunities would present themselves to you, you couldn’t help but feel like somebody else should take it instead. “I… guess we can arrange something like that” you say a little slowly unconsciously anticipating someone to interject. But nobody did. How refreshing you thought

Later in the day, you were quietly sitting in the library, pretending to read a book when you were really just sketching her again, not wanting to forget the image of her this morning as you tried your best to translate in on the paper. Meanwhile, Kuvira was situated in an armchair playing with a piece of metal as she transformed it into different figures. Something you observed Kuvira liked to do when she didn’t have anything on her mind. You finish the sketch a few moments later and was about to actually read a book this time when one of the guards rushed into the library causing Kuvira to stand abruptly to greet the guard. “Report?” she said in an authoritative manner which you found extremely intriguing causing a flash of warmth in your stomach for what felt like the hundredth time today.
“The avatar is here captain” and that got your attention. The guard reported that a huge airship landed on Zaofu only to find out that it was the Avatar and her company, arriving two days earlier than expected. You and Kuvira immediately rushed to the receiving hall and Suyin introduces you to the Avatar and her friends
“Princess Y/N! I would like to introduce you to Avatar Korra” Suyin said and you bow to a woman with mocha skin and blue eyes as she did the same for you too. You were caught a little bit off guard when the Avatar reaches for your hand and says, “I am so sorry for what your kingdom is going through right now.” You felt tears form in your eyes and you quickly blinked them away with a smile. “Thank you” you said gently.
After the Avatar releases your hand Suyin proceeds to introduce you to the Avatar’s friends. You meet Lin, Su’s older sister who you have admired all your life for the stories of her bravery in giving up her title and inheritance to be the chief of security in the mainland. Then you meet Bolin and Mako, who both took your hand and kissed it as a sign of respect and that they shared the same sentiment with the avatar towards your kingdom’s demise. And then you meet Asami, a tall, beautiful woman that you quickly learned was involved with the Avatar when one of the guards stared at her for a little bit too long only to have Korra glare at him and pull Asami by the waist for the indication to back-off. Suffice to say you were surprised. You were not made aware that this kind of relationship was okay around here because back in Elysian it was ultimately frowned upon and discouraged. A taboo, basically. Interesting.
Suyin gave a personal tour around the estate and you decided to join along trailing behind them a little bit when you start to converse with Asami. You learned that she was a Sato which impressed you a lot since you have always been a fan of Future Industries. She tells you the story of how she had to take over an entire company at such a young age after her father was imprisoned because of his involvement with the equalists. She was a strong and smart independent young woman. And you admired her for that.

Dinner was great and entertaining as usual. There were more of you than usual and the dinner was meant to celebrate Opal and her new skill for air bending which resulted in Suyin requesting wine to be served. You were raised on wine and so you were really good at tolerating its side effects. The Avatar, on the other hand, was a different story. She was all over the place and was already spilling some on herself and the table, not that any of you minded or if the others even noticed, everyone was pretty much approaching Korra’s level of intoxication, and you were amused. Having cups of sake was a daily practice in Elysian, some nobles taking the drink even in the morning. You were sipping on your fourth glass and sitting poised amidst the chaos and the loud laughter and you lock eyes with Kuvira who was standing by the doorway with amusement in her eyes. She mouthed an “are you okay?” to you and you simply smile and nod as you finish the last drops of your glass before getting up to retire to your chambers.
“Where are you going Princess Y/N” Huan calls out turning the attention of the room towards you. “I’m spent. I will be heading to my chambers now” you say respectfully and Asami whines about the night just getting started which was far from the truth, because, by the looks of everyone, they were about to pass out after two more refills. “Well don’t stop on my account” you say anyway as you continue to walk towards the door but not before stopping in front of Kuvira. “Do you mind escorting me captain?” you say to her and she puts a hand on the small of your back to lead you to your room.
The walk to your room was in comfortable silence and when you reached your chambers you turn to Kuvira and invite her inside. She looks at you quizzically, “Zhu Li is not back yet, I could use some company” you explain and Kuvira accepts. You lead Kuvira to your room and she awkwardly stands there not quite sure what her purpose was. Kuvira never entered your room unless Zhu Li was with you. Usually, when Zhu Li was not with you, it indicates that you simply wanted to be left alone which Kuvira respected. But something was different this time. You were okay. For the first time in a while, you were happy.
You walk towards your vanity before taking a seat and you start to take off your jewelry. “You can take a seat Vee, it’s okay.” You say but Kuvira shakes her head “I’m good right here” she says as she stands awkwardly in the center of the room and you roll your eyes not believing her statement “Suit yourself then” you challenged. “Zhu Li usually helps me get ready for the night, but I gave her the day off so It’s pretty much the first time I’m attending to myself” you say in an attempt to make conversation. “How does it feel?” Kuvira asks
“Liberating” you answer with a smile and Kuvira chuckles in amusement and so did you
“I wasn’t joking” you defended yourself as you sat there still laughing lightly and Kuvira shakes her head at your statement.
“It’s just a very strong word to describe the feeling of preparing yourself before bed your highness” She explains with a smile and you furrow your eyebrows “Well how would you use the word “liberating” then?” you asked. Kuvira thought about it for a while before taking a seat on the ottoman at the edge of your bed before locking eyes with you “Probably when I’m free to do whatever I want, without having to worry about social stigma or the consequences. Libersating” she answers, and you nod your head in understanding still not breaking eye contact with her. You didn’t want to. Kuvira smiles at you and eventually looks away to stare at the moon peeking through your window. This pulls you from your thoughts and you decide to get up and undress in the bathroom.
You managed to get the first layer of your dress off but there were two more layers and you were running out of patience as you discover how difficult it is to remove your dress without somebody there to help you. You let out a deep sigh and you peek your head from the bathroom door to see Kuvira standing over your desk, her back turned towards you. You cleared your throat to catch her attention and she turns around. “Yes princess?” she asks, and you slowly walk out of the bathroom with only the underlayer of your dress and you notice Kuvira tense. You pursed your lips trying to hide your embarrassment. “Can you… um… undress me?” you ask and Kuvira stands there not quite sure what you’re suggesting, and you mentally facepalm yourself. My goodness, that sounded so wrong. “What I meant was… I can’t reach the um… the hooks that keep my dress up and I need you to undo it for me” you try to explain, your cheeks slowly heating up from the embarrassment and Kuvira blinks before gaining her composure back “Turn around” she says
You felt your cheeks burn and you followed. You feel Kuvira’s breath at the back of your ear causing goosebumps to rise in your skin. Fuck. The fact that your hair was up exposing the back of your neck fully proved to be no help at all. You closed your eyes trying to erase the crude images flashing in your mind as you feel Kuvira slowly unclasp the hooks of your dress one by one. She undoes the first layer and it drops to the ground. Now you were practically in your undergarment. No, you were in your undergarment. Kuvira’s fingers skillfully untie the ribbons of the garment that held your breasts up. For every ribbon she unties, your breath was getting heavier and your eyes remain closed trying to keep composure. Kuvira was at the final ribbon and your entire back was exposed now as you held the garment into place, so your chest was still covered. Your breath hitched when you felt Kuvira’s nose touch your ear. Spirits help me, what is she doing? You stopped breathing when she slowly traced her fingers lightly from the back of your neck to the small of your back. What was once an innocent stomach flutter, became a heating sensation between your legs. Fuck. “done” Kuvira whispers in your ear. It took most of your energy to turn back around to face her and say thank you like you weren’t affected in the slightest as she gives you a weak smile and a “no problem.”
You walk back into your bathroom and lightly close the door behind to lean against it, “Shit” you whisper to yourself already knowing what this feeling meant. It wasn’t your first time to desire for somebody you couldn’t. You felt that once a year or two ago with one of your ladies, but with the stigma on those kinds of relationships plus the fact that she was engaged to a nobleman since she was 9… you had to suck it up and move on. You did a damn good job of hiding your desires and your feelings back then, and you can do it again.
You took a look at yourself in the mirror before disregarding the garment you held on to, to wrap a robe securely around your body. You gently wash your face and you mentally prepared yourself to face Kuvira once more. Suck it up Y/N. You said to yourself before pushing the door open to see Kuvira standing over your desk again.
“What’s so interesting about that desk Vee?” you jokingly ask
“I thought Huan was exaggerating your talent when he said you could draw, but… this is truly impressive your highness” Kuvira answered turning to face you with a few sketches you made in hand. You smile at her and mentally thank the spirits that your drawings of Kuvira were in the library and that most of the sketches you kept in your room were more of the palace and some sketches of Zhu Li and the Beifongs, mainly Opal.
“You like Opal?” Kuvira asked with a smirk and your eyes widened
“Not in that way!” You defended and Kuvira gives a hearty laugh
“There’s nothing wrong with it! She is a princess after all… It can work!” She jokes and you shake your head in embarrassment before opening one of the cabinets in the room. You pulled out a bottle of sake and two glasses placing it on your desk, and you filled the glasses half-way. I’m not doing this sober. Kuvira’s laugh falters and looks at you in confusion. “What?” you ask as you hand her a glass. “You keep sake in your room?” she asks with an amused smile before taking it from you. “I am from Elysian after all” you say and you two clink your glasses as you take a sip. Kuvira coughs loudly from the drink and you try to suppress a smile. “What is this?! Gasoline?!” she accuses still recovering from the burn of the liquid. You chuckle at her reaction “Haven’t you ever had whiskey before?” you ask surprised. “I’ve heard of it and its effects, but I would have never guessed that I would encounter it first of with an “indoor” princess” She explains, “It’s disgusting by the way. How could you possibly enjoy this?” she says in disgust
“Give it a few more sips and believe me when I say that the taste will be the last thing on your mind.” You say wickedly as you clink your glasses again forcing Kuvira to drink once more out of respect. You see her nose scrunch up in disgust as you tried to hide your smile behind the glass personally finding this entertaining. Who knew my talent for controlling the effects of sake had its own advantages?
Turns out, Kuvira wasn’t a lightweight after all. You spent the rest of the night sitting across from each other on the large window seat already nearly halfway through the bottle and Kuvira isn’t much of a mess yet. Kuvira drinks the remaining liquid in her glass and refills it once more “You know what… this isn’t actually so bad” she comments, “Didn’t I tell you?” you say with a smile. At this point, your hair was already down and you didn’t bother to change out of your robe while Kuvira bent her armor off and disregarded some of her clothing claiming it was “too much” leaving her in green pants and a white tank top which in all honestly you didn’t mind at all.
You stretched your legs to be more comfortable and Kuvira’s eyes land on the exposed skin before looking back up at you. “You know nearly everything about me…” you start and Kuvira nods her head in agreement “I should, I’m tasked to look after you all” she says “Yes, but I don’t really know much about you except for the fact that you hate reading” you say and Kuvira laughs “I’m being serious!” you say with a pout letting the effects of sake kick in. “okay… what do you want to know princess?” she asks and you pretend to think for a moment
“Everything.” You say with a smile before taking a sip from your drink and Kuvira shakes her head at you “Fine.”
“Well, I wasn’t born here in Zaofu…” She started “My parents decided that they couldn’t take care of me anymore and so they brought me here hoping a rich family would adopt me. They left me outside the Palace and one of the guards brought me in and told me to behave if I wanted the nobles to like me. But I was an extremely disobedient kid you see, so when the guard left, I wandered around the castle and ended up in the throne room and fell asleep on the throne” you gasped at this part, earning a chuckle from Kuvira. The throne was sacred and should never be treated with disrespect. Back home, you were only allowed to stand by the throne only when your father was there. Forget about sitting on it. You would have to be the queen to be able to do that.
“Time passed and I felt somebody nudging me awake and when I opened my eyes a woman was staring at me. It was Empress Suyin with a concerned look on her face. She asked me where my parents were and I told her that I didn’t have parents anymore, so she decided to take me in and let me live in the Palace as an adopted member of the family.” She says “But their advisors were against it. They said that I could never be entitled to anything since I was not a real Beifong. And for a little kid, it was the most confusing thing you could possibly hear. I remember thinking: How am I not a Beifong? Suyin was practically my mother and her kids treated me like a sister” She said with a sad look “Eventually when I turned 8 Suyin brought me to the training grounds to show me the meteorites. Surprisingly enough I was quick to bend the meteorite and Suyin told me it was the fastest she’s ever seen anyone attempt and succeed at metal bending. She called me a protégé. Since that day, she has personally trained me and taught me everything I know today.” Kuvira took another drink from her glass “By the age of 16 I joined the royal family’s guard and told Su that if I couldn’t become a Beifong then I will spend the rest of my lifr protecting the Beifongs, the only family I have ever known. After a few years, I raised above my station until I became a captain. It was Suyin who gave me the title, and no one objected to it because they all knew I worked my ass off everyday to get here” Kuvira finishes.
“You call her majesty by her name because she’s basically your mother” you say in realization and Kuvira nods her head. “She insisted on it.” Kuvira explains.
You leaned forward to grab her hand and looked at her with sorrow in your eyes “I’m sorry about your parents… It must have been hard for you as a kid to suddenly be away from them” you say, and she smiles weakly at you unconsciously leaning forward too. “I’m okay” she says. And none of you talk for a while. You lock eyes with her and once again your head is filled with thoughts that shouldn’t be there, but the liquid courage is giving you the strength to not look away. Kuvira didn’t look away too, she didn’t want to. Your stomach starts to feel the all too familiar warmth and you can’t help but wonder if she felt it too.
Your thoughts were confirmed when she gently placed a palm on your cheek and started caressing it. Suddenly you didn’t want to suck it up anymore. You were no longer in control. As if it were instinct, you leaned into her touch and Kuvira slowly leaned in closer. You didn’t dare move a muscle as you felt her breath against your own. One more inch and the gap between the two of you would be closed. But she stopped moving and it took everything in you to not close the gap yourself. She’s a princess Kuvira thought to herself. She closed her eyes and took a sharp breath “I’m sorry” she mutters before quickly pulling away. It took you a few seconds to process what just happened. “It’s… It’s okay.” You say quietly “We’ve had a lot to drink” you say with a little more volume and Kuvira simply nods and gets up but the sake got the best of her when she accidentally stumbles and she had to hold your arm to keep her balance. You chuckle lightly at this and she smiles at herself in embarrassment.
“That whiskey is no joke” Kuvira comments and you two laugh “…what the fuck just happened?” she says and you two laugh even harder, tears forming in your eyes. Your laughter dies down and Kuvira starts to collect herself again and starts putting her disregarded clothes “I should probably go. I need to get at least a few hours of sleep before the day starts or I might space out the entire day” she says before bending her armor back on expertly. “You could sleep here if you want… The couch is rather comfortable” you offered and Kuvira shakes her head “I’m afraid that would be too much for me to accept. I’ll be heading back to my quarters” She explains, and you couldn’t help but feel the pang of disappointment which you expertly conceal. “okay then. Just don’t stumble on your way back” you jokingly say, earning a light chuckle from Kuvira.
Kuvira head for the door but you call her attention before she does “Hey Vee!” she turns to you “Thank you… For tonight” you say and she smiles softly at you “Good night princess…” she checks the clock on the wall “Or should I say morning” she jokes and your smile widens at her wit and she proceeds to open the door, leaving you alone in your chambers and with your thoughts. You were still sat on the window seat and the smile on your face slowly fades as the events of tonight sank in. She feels it too. You thought and you didn’t know what to do with that information exactly. You ended up sitting there for a little while longer to stare out the window. “Spirits help me” you say out loud.

I have this whole story outline for a kuvira x reader where you’re the Fire Lord instead of Izumi and when they have that sit down meeting you announce your plans to use the Fire Nation’s resources to help Kuvira build her empire rather than stop it because you know the Earth Kingdom can’t just be a puppet state controlled by Republic City and you think that if that happens RC will eventually become just like the Fire Nation from Sozin to Ozai and I want Azula to be your mother instead of Zuko being your father because it makes for a nice tragic backstory for you to bond over with Kuvira (you know, you grew up with your mom in prison, the whole nine yards) and the two of you end up falling in love (cause we all know Kuvira likes milfs) and it basically follows the canon plot but instead of Bataar Jr it’s you (you’d be a much more important character and she would actually call you by your name instead of “my fiancé” but you get the picture) (also no one thinks it’s weird or wrong because age is just a number ok?) and then when Kuvira does her spirit laser wack shit she blasts your ass to the past and you survive but you’re so betrayed and you can’t find it in you to trust her after everything’s over but you do go sprinting to her side after her and Korra come back from the Spirit World. I do also want them to have a really emotional fight scene with incredibly high stakes and I want Kuvira to come *this* close to killing you but then realizing what she’s doing and backing away and then you immobilize her with lightning and you’re just speechless because she forgot who you were for a moment there, or did she ever see you the way you thought she did? So idk if that would be instead of the spirit laser or somewhere idk. I have so many more thoughts and they go all the way into Ruins of the Empire but I’m probably never gonna write it lmao maybe I’ll do a little bulleted list of key plot points if that interests anyone
