#bc there's so MUCH and I'm bad at visualizing this stuff and I tend to zone out while listening to it
Text
I've been reading Exodus lately and I've just gotten to the portions where God gives the first commands to the people via Moses (twice), and then goes on to give detailed instructions about the tabernacle and how it should be built, and I'm just... we think art is unimportant?? we think things only mean as much as their functionality?? we so easily fall into the trap of believing that beauty means nothing, that it's cheap and only worth whatever mindless distraction it brings, that it's barely more than a cheap sensual thrill, that buildings should just be practical and plain and cheap, that everything should be functional but ultimately disposable, that paintings and dresses and mugs and curtains and carpets are just pretty but have no real value, that beauty is fleeting and vain and therefore shouldn't be thought about too much, if even looked for at all... we fall into these traps so easily, and we forget that there are chapters upon chapters of painstakingly detailed plans to build one portable worship tent, and those plans have been handed down through thousands of years of human history, because beauty and art and skill in craft is important
#I have to go get ready for work now but I will come back to this#and don't even get me started on the parts about God calling specific craftsmen *by name*#he called them!! by name!!! he said 'this man is good at his job. he creates beautiful work. he will build my temple and make it beautiful'#and even more--God inspired him!!!! it was a calling of GOD for him to create beautiful carvings and tapestries and candlesticks!!!#look even if you're not jewish or christian or religious at all you have GOT to see what it means that all these incredibly detailed plans#for building this tent-temple are extremely important#because even if you don't believe in God and don't think that this is all significant bc he personally gave the instructions#and then helped preserve this record of them so we could still read them today#you do have to see how important they were to the people of that time who first wrote them down#and the extreme care that was taken to record all of those detail#AND the fact that it's been preserved for so long and we can still read all the care that was put into creating this incredible piece#of artwork and worship they made#gurt says stuff#I just. gahhfhhfj. I'm feeling emotional about chapters of the Bible that I can't even fully force myself to pay attention to#bc there's so MUCH and I'm bad at visualizing this stuff and I tend to zone out while listening to it#but the fact that it IS that much!!! that there SO MUCH DETAIL and it goes on for SO LONG that I even struggle to pay attention!!!#that this was THAT IMPORTANT to the people who wrote it and to God!!! as an artist and someone who has always cared about art#this means so much to me ok#christianity#bible verse#bible thoughts#exodus#art#theology

Hi Ira! Do you have any tips for drawing characters in perspective/foreshortening? I’ve been trying to learn recently but I keep feeling like the characters end up way out of proportion.
sure! it's a complex thing that i'm sure other ppl have covered more thoroughly/coherently than i have, but i can try to throw together some quick notes on the stuff i tend to keep in mind.
the first one is one i'm sure you already know about and that everyone is sick of hearing but i'm reiterating it anyway bc it's just that important: REFERENCE!!! ref ref ref!!!! even though the intent is often to exaggerate or stylize well past what ref can offer, it's still a great way to train yourself and to start to build up a kind of visual library in your head of how certain body parts tend to behave in perspective, what overlaps look like and how to stylize them, etc. if you can't find reference that suits what you're drawing, try to take it yourself -- this can be tricky w foreshortened poses but if u have a housemate etc who can help you it's worth it. (i always feel kind of goofy when i'm taking my own ref but like, nobody ever has to see it. do it for the art)
the thing w ref tho, and i think this comes out with exaggerated posing/foreshortening even more often than usual, is sometimes u can really faithfully follow ref and stuff STILL looks bad/wonky/just OFF -- because sometimes in real life things just look dumb! that's how it is! that's when it becomes our job to just fudge it, and a reliable way to do that is by returning to basic construction.
so here's an example of a wip layout where i had to figure out a bunch of bodies in perspective. the camera is above the group, looking down at the central figure -- that central figure laying on the floor is not foreshortened, because it's laying flat and kind of directly facing the "camera," but all the figures standing up around it have to be foreshortened bc their heads are much closer to the viewer than their feet. when you think of them as just a bunch of complex bodies, that is really overwhelming.
Tumblr media
what helped me a lot was to remember that you can put basically ANYTHING into perspective if you shove it into a box! then you can use those boxes -- which are MUCH easier to accurately draw in perspective -- as a guideline, and basically make sure everybody's respective body parts "fit" into those cubes.
Tumblr media
you can do this in conjuction with using perspective rulers/setting up vanishing points/etc, but with enough practice you can just eyeball it and you'll already find yourself way ahead in terms of simplifying stuff and giving yourself guidelines. this is also really helpful with more complex poses -- in this case, the figure in the top right is standing pretty square, with all the different segments of her body facing forward, but hopefully you can imagine how breaking the body into boxes like this can help immensely in cases where, for example, the shoulders are twisting one way and the hips are twisting another, etc. simplifying all these different parts of the body (which are frequently putting themselves into DIFFERENT perspective by moving independently from each other) as boxes or other simple shapes stacked on top of each other lets you organize things visually and figure stuff out one piece at a time, instead of the mental nightmare of "oh my god i have to draw all this wiggly organic stuff all at different points in space"
here's another example. i freehanded this one, but i can try to kind of retroactively break down what i try to keep in mind when drawing stuff like this; a lot of it boils down to just trying to be consistent about how different body parts relate to each other + how that's all framed from the viewer's pov (stylized below as a camera angle):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it helps a lot to think of exaggeration in size as just a tool you're using to tell the viewer how close something is to the "camera." (if you've ever struggled to draw a leg in forshortening because the ankle is thinner than the thigh and trying to honor "closer thing = bigger" while still keeping that in proportion -- this is where using basic shapes in perspective helps!)
i'm struggling a little to explain it in words so i hope the diagram helps; basically, dole out the heaviest foreshortening to the parts that "deserve" it most (are coming most aggressively toward the viewer/"camera"), and worry about it less on body parts that aren't doing anything crazy (for example, in the main image, the torso's relationship to the camera is pretty neutral, so the body is drawn without much foreshortening or exaggeration. in the little camera angle diagram i drew in the top left, though, the body IS heavily foreshortened, because viewed from the front in this pose the head + torso would be sticking out straight ahead.)
this is a way more loosey-goosey approach than the boxes in perspective of the first example; i found this pose less difficult than a multi-character situation so i was winging it. is the "perspective" of this body probably correct? i'm like 99% sure it isn't. but 99% of illustration is just making sure things LOOK right, not necessarily actually DRAWING them right, and you can gloss over a LOT if you just try to make sure the spatial logic in your drawings is like, more or less consistent. once you've tricked the eye of the viewer into being like "sure, i buy that one leg is further back than the other and we're looking UP" or "yeah, it looks like we are looking DOWN at the tops of these character's heads", you can pretty much get away with murder in terms of actual perspective/anatomy, esp if u have a very stylized art style. be brave!!!!

mental heath stuff (not bad just candid)
dunno if i'll regret sharing this just yet, maybe i should have sat on it a little more until i knew exactly if i should share and how much, but parts of me really insist, and so i guess we're going for it
and i word that way because
months of exhausting processing has led me to conclude that I’m a system, so I’m still in the undertaking of cataloging an awful lot of shit into one rolodex. the kicker is i probably have been one for at least 20 years, but everyone got along so well and so cooperatively, like the most well harmonized combining mecha, that is oblivious to the fact it even is one. nobody even needed nametags in here.
…mostly. warning signs were there, it's just some of the issues that come from this sort of thing that did leak through, were hiding under other conditions that already cause similar complications. if you're familiar with the messier mental illnesses and all the ways they start to functionally melt at the edges and trade symptoms in odd places and our understanding of it all is still so half-formed, you'll probably get what i mean. hopefully people following me understand none of this crap works like it tends to get depicted in media
i'm schizophrenic and my mind is a fucking enigma anyway
anyway
then one "new" alter woke up last november in response to an acute straw breaking camel's back moment of abuse at home after enduring way too much for way too long, but the alter is not actually new, is technically one of the oldest, but she's been 'asleep' for like a decade and her point of origin is even older than that obviously this one was SO different and possessed SUCH a different headspace and set of tastes and desired behaviors, and subsequently threw equilibrium off so badly, all the components of the mecha suddenly realized they were components bc now the situation kind of required acknowledging that fact to proceed to even get starting fixing shit.
its like
"who is this weird one who broke everything" "no clue, you guys got any ideas?" "why would we have any ideas you don't, we're all us" "yeah like what do you even mean by You Guys?" "i think they're joking, like, because we're all copies of the same person, like the spongebob bit with the fine dining, they're asking themself rhetorically because it's funny…….. …….we are all the same person right. this is a metaphor. like the spongebob bit…… right….." "why are we not all immediately agreeing" "because before we could all reflexively say yes we realized we all had different definitions of The Same Person we are"
this is a gross oversimplification of course
this was a lot to process for pretty much all parts of me save one (incidentally, not the new one, the new one isn't shocked, but is a crybaby, so they didn't take Existing (Again) (2. Electric Boogaloo) very well. they do not take the prospect of 'going back to sleep' veryy either, though. so we're having to slightly redesign the mecha)
mostly through the worst of it, but among other problems we're still working to repair, this sleeper code alter caused a catastrophic system failure in the ventilation and even though everyone is mostly calmed down now, they can still smell everyone else's scented candles in their personal quarters, which is annoying when some of them have VERY different tastes in scents)
annoying, but not ruinous. fixing the AC is low priority compared to other things
like the pneumonic tube that used to let everyone hot potato information and memories from any time they were the one obliviously in the cockpit, we had a pretty damn good one, it was working so well we didn't know why we were even using it, and assumed its regular but manageable failings were just, natural, or because of some other factor affecting the tubes themselves or potato availability, and not considering most people do not have these potato tubes at all
yes i will probably make some kind of comic to conceptualize and visually externalize this i struggle to feel understood without doodles
also, while typing this post, specifically, tumblr did a fucky wucky, and when i realized i'd made an entire other post in the tags, i went to try to copy/paste them into the post but the nature of the fucky wucky prevented this. i'm really not in the mood to retype all that so it's just a screenshot now

what do you think Erwin considers himself that he sucks at but at the same time he enjoys doing it? suddenly i thought of tiktoks that are like "having a hobby you're bad at is okay". do you have any hobbies you consider yourself not good at too?
tbh i think the "bad" and "good" stuffs are all social constructs, but i'm still struggling with crocheting just bc i think i suck but at the same time i know that's something i do for relax. still sometimes i can't afford to think that way??? do you have the same problem and have you overcome it? i have no idea if this is a prompt or just me asking you stuffs.
do you often project what you're thinking into your writing and visual arts and any other form of art?
oh my god this is getting nowhere 🥲🥲 thank you for reading Rie. have a good day!!!

THE BEST BIRTHDAY
ERWIN SMITH X GEN NEUTRAL!READER
TAGS: fluff, slice of life, kissing, comfort, office romance AU, idiots in love, insecurities, and AAAA HAPPEE BIRTHDAY ERWIN (this also goes with my most recent ask)
WORDS: 2.9k
hi @frenchdyer ❤ i know i took this long bc i've been thinking about this. like the otherworldly self-reflectio i only tend to have once in a year or whenever i'm PMS-ing lol. how's your crocheting? were you able to improve somehow months after you had sent me this msg? my sister gifted me a crochet kit, so i've been planning to learn, too!
on a personal note, the hobby i suck at but enjoy doing nonetheless is drawing! perhaps it's a self-esteem issue, but i've been drawing since i was 5. the passion came to me even before i learned how to write! due to the amount of years i've been trying to master it only to have minimal progress, i can say drawing is smth i can never admit i'm good at. but i came to terms to it now (when i was in highschool i was so insecure about it lol) and bc i did, i draw things to enjoy, not bc i'm utterly pressured to improve!

On the surface, even his closest friends would have a different time answering this question. It's Erwin we're talking about, after all! The literal embodiment of academic perfection and charisma!
Erwin also wants to think of something other than an answer. Although he admits his flaws well when someone points them out, he wants to be good at everything as much as possible. For a perfectionist like him, self-admittance would mean giving up!
It is until you said something that made him recnsider. "Sometimes, I don't see you as a human."
In hindsight, the context of your question was, "What do you want to have for your birthday?" but Erwin seems to be the type to already have the things he'd want and need in life, perhaps if one were to speak materially. Every gift he'd receive would only impact him a little, and you want to change that.
He chuckles at the remark, amused as your features remain serious, "Do I feel like an alien?"
"Dunno," you shrug without turning up at him—only at the papers, hiding a frustrated blush. "And if you're actually a slimy organism underneath? It scares me."
You hear the office chair sliding towards you, and as swift as ever, Erwin's hand is on top of yours. He squeezes it gently, and you try to hold your fluster by glaring at him. Luckily. Only the two of you are in the office; what would the others say if they saw this? You and Erwin made it clear to keep your relationship hidden by acting 'decent' in public places.
He lets you feel its warmth first, although unsure of the reason why, then he guides your hand towards his cheeks. He presses your palm on it.
"W-what?"
Erwin casually leans his cheek to your palms, albeit with a tranquil expression contrary to you, perhaps amusingly watching your reaction. "Mind repeating what you said earlier?"
"I said underneath. Hypothetically. And I don't mean it literally as well."
"Underneath? Well, that's quite a unique way of asking me to—"
You swatted your hand away and lightly hit his chest as you couldn't hold the fluster. "Stop playing with me. I'm not done yet."
"Well, I'm done."
"Please don't make it my problem."
"I'm actually offering to help."
You perk up in glee. If Erwin's to help, then you might as well consider yourself done. You pulled your chair away from your desk so Erwin could look at it.
However, Erwin asks something completely unrelated amidst the heap of your paperwork. "Why do you not see me as a human?"
"You feel like some sort of god."
"Silly, that's a metaphor that would fit you more."
"Oh, you. Stop flustering me." you huff in sarcasm. "You know about the crocheted scarf I was planning to give you before winter ends?"
"Yeah, and it's summer already. I'm still waiting for it, though."
"I threw it away."
"Huh?" Erwin looks at you in surprise, eyebrows twitched in confusion, perhaps in a whine. He knows you've been trying so hard for it. "Why would you?"
"I'm not good at it."
"But you were enjoying it. You told me so."
"Not because I enjoy it means I'm good at it," you then smile in defeat. "Let's just say I'm not as fast at learning as you are, no matter how much the task interests me. Maybe that's why I sometimes can't deem you human, too. Too good for me, I think."
Erwin could only observe you afterward. You don't try to make it a big issue, none but admittance that unpretentiously comes out of your mouth. As much as it is, perhaps, concerning self-esteem, Erwin is the one hit by it. The way you could admit your flaws a bit too easily and go home without pondering on it is something he couldn't easily do even if he tried. It takes one to help overcome an insecurity and another to admit his own.
"That's not true."
"It is. You really excel at everything, Erwin. That's something I also yearn to have for myself. You don't have flaws. Or, well, let's say you have one, but no normal being can see it so easily."
Well, you were able to lay down his flaws then and there. After all, he's having difficulty coming to terms with his flaws—or perhaps, on saying such admittances out loud. You are right. As much as Erwin demands you to open yourself up to him, some facets stay unsaid because he opts to and wants to remain an ideal image, perhaps one who can only admit his inadequacy if someone points it out. You're the complete opposite, though. You could admit your flaws and still end the day happily. The 'incompatibility', or so you might call it, could be giving him a hard time consoling you.
Oh, and when he recently enjoys consoling you the most. He really appreciates having you open up to him, enjoys the privilege of being able to take care of you as you let him, enjoys listening to your blabbers, and offers resolutions just like the strategic man he is. After all, he's one of the few people who sees that.
Only if he doesn't suck doing it.
"Oh no, did I say something that upset you?" you ask worriedly, sensing his silence.
And he's not the one to be given comfort right now, or so he thinks. It's as if you hit a nail, albeit unaware of how and where it hit him.
Just as if closing the distance is the needed nudge, Erwin pulls your figure towards him, holds both cheeks and surrenders to sweet kisses. Erwin's lips are warm, and the pace is languid. Yet, it's overwhelming enough to deprive you of your senses, let alone the urgent question of why he is suddenly acting the way he is. This might be the first time he got intimate with you inside the workplace. You know this type of kiss from him, too—he does it whenever he's dreary or after working on a significant research paper that got him weary.
The worry reverberates, and thus, you withdraw from the kiss, "Is this because of the scarf? I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have thrown it away. Don't worry, I'll make another one and—hmph!"
He cuts you off for another kiss, harsher this time, perhaps classified as a silent sulk for cutting off the lovely exchange, but no—you're wrong. It's not on you at all. Erwin is frustrated with himself. He holds onto your waist until you're seated on his lap and wraps his hand around your neck to press you further to his chest—hoping it would compensate for the distance you two have due to his inadequacies. To be great in giving you solace is to be vulnerable and imperfect; how could he do that?
He withdraws when both of you need air, albeit begrudgingly, "I'm sorry, Erwin. I know you waited for that scarf."
"No, it's not about that."
"Then what?"
He pretended to ponder for a few seconds, eyes roaming the room to gather his words. He pursed his lips before pointing out, "Don't you think the way you perceive me as a human far beyond you is a flaw I might have? Partners are not supposed to see each other that way."
"I'm merely exaggerating."
"Yes, but still."
"Are you saying you must apologize to me because you're such a perfect being?"
"No, because I'm failing to show you that I'm not."
Oh.
You finally see where he's coming from. "Are you failing by choice?"
He averts his gaze away, "Yes."
"Then it can really be a flaw," you flash him a sympathetic smile, moving his face so he'd see you in the eyes again, "can you tell me why?"
“I'm not brave enough to show it the way other people do."
"You just did, honey."
"Not because I want to, but because I'm insecure about my inability to console you like a normal partner would. The way you perceive me right now says a lot about our distance. And mind you, doing this isn't even supposed to be this hard."
Both of you stopped. That is by far the most vulnerable thing he had said about himself since you started dating months ago—and it wouldn't even sound vulnerable unless it came out of Erwin's mouth. That's how hard he's been all this time.
He expects you to be annoyed. After all, that might be one of the shallowest reasons he had ever given, too.
But then you smile as if you appreciate him for saying that much—just as if you know it takes a lot for the Erwin Smith to admit something like that, "It's not something you can unlearn overnight. Do not fret."
He lets out a defeated chuckle, "That I know well."
"What's strange is that I'm not your first partner. How come this didn't become a problem with your previous ones?"
"Because people are content to perceive me that way. At some point, I preferred that, too. Honestly—" he leans his head on your shoulder, hands on your waist to keep your balance on his lap, "had it not affected the way I console you, I would prefer things to stay that way."
You pepper him with kisses all over his face, something he accepts as a reward, "Honestly, I would prefer you this way, too. A relationship with a god can be a bit of a struggle, after all."
"Indeed it is. What a struggle I have right now."
You glare at him, "What do you mean by that?"
He shakes his head nothing, hands lurking inside your shirt to feel you more, to shower you with reverence, "Let me finish this now. I miss our bed."

Today is his birthday, and you still need to think of a gift that could be deemed special.
As a last-minute reflection before giving up the gift that has been frustrating you for days, you try to ponder on the previous days since he opened up.
Erwin has become more talkative since then. He's always been chatty towards you since you started the relationship, especially when info dumping. However, this has a stark difference. He's trying too much as if matching an expectation no one but him had set up. Wording it as "forced" would perhaps hurt, but it's not something you could deny, either. Only when afternoon came did you realize how to fix it, with Erwin on a couch and crochet yarns on his lap. He has his phone at the coffee table and the familiar tutor video playing in the background. Eventually he sighs, unties the yarn, and repeats—this time with much precision, and you couldn't help but smile. When Erwin is about to learn something new, he locks himself in his office and spends the whole day studying it alone. Only now did you finally unravel why, and it's apparently part of his mentioned flaw that night.
He might be forcing himself lately, but it's the adjustment that counts.
Erwin perks up in surprise when you sit beside him and hold his hand. You guide his fingers into the correct way of tying the knot. You didn't say anything, and maybe you even tried to act like it's an everyday routine. Erwin pretends to listen and pick up the techniques you're blabbering, but in reality, he's just looking at your face. His lips are flat but twitching as he's trying to hold the urge to steal a kiss. He tries to inhale longer to indulge in the scent of your hair but not too much to call your attention. And as the moment passes, thirty minutes, perhaps because the video's finally done playing in the background, Erwin realizes something.
Just… just what held him back from being like this towards you? This is, in fact, a short step. The bare minimum, even. And even so, it felt genuinely liberating. Indeed, he's been forcing himself to be vulnerable recently, but this is the first time it exuded a positive feeling.
Your hands gently stop, the instruction's done, and Erwin only realizes when you turn to look him in the eye, "You get it?"
"The what?"
"Huh?"
"Oh," Erwin tries to recall what his blank, sappy head might have digested so far, only to no avail. The only thing coming up in his mind right now is the smell of your shampoo. Perhaps his nerdy brain is trying to guess the unfamiliar flavor mix and earn your praise once his guess is correct. "I—uh—"
"You didn't listen at all."
He smiles, guilty.
You sigh, "I'm quite persistent, you see. We're not eating dinner until we both master this knot."
"Wouldn't this wait? I'm not in the mood anymore."
You shake your head and untie the yarn. But just as you're about to quip at his newfound impatience (and how cute he is trying to get the hang of it like a little kid learning origami), Erwin grasps the tool away from your hands and cups your cheeks.
He first lands a chaste peck on your forehead, then the bridge of your nose, then the tip of it, then the two cheeks, and finally, it deepens when he reaches for your mouth.
And because you are indeed a persistent being, you have no idea how shamelessly grateful Erwin was when you did more than just pull him in. He tried to stop himself, after all, for seconds in case it'd do anything better. Maybe you're not in the mood; perhaps you want to see the side of him not knowing better and learning things together. But when his palm glided on your cheek and your eyes widened in response, the tremor in his nerves overpowered the need to ask.
Perhaps the tremor was gratitude because here he is, not getting any younger, and yet, this is only his first genuine step to face his vulnerability.
You kiss him back and wrap your arm around his neck to pull him in, albeit quite sure why he's suddenly kissing you like this.
Unlike the previous one, his kisses are full of gentleness, and not a tinge of frustration can be seen. His hands, although huge and hard, slide inside your shirt so softly to feel your bare skin. You withdraw a bit to ask what might be the matter, but quickly forget the question when you see his face. He's blushing as though it's the first time he has kissed like this. His eyes are pretty lidded, lips a bit open, and you realize that although you had seen this expression before, it was for a very brief moment—not immediately after a chaste kissing session.
He looks at you, quite disappointed for cutting the kiss short again. He grabs you by the ankle until you're sitting on his lap.
"Did something happen?"
He shakes his head, "Saying it out loud would be sappy."
"If you think I'd forgive you for spacing out while I'm—kyah!"
He starts sucking on your neck, "Shut up and don't ruin the moment."
"The what? Hey, don't mark on it. I'm warning you."
Erwin really wants to explain his thoughts. He's sure you'd be glad if you were to know all of this. Even though he could never perceive this as a significant step beyond, he bet you'd be giggling and jumping once you know.
He looks up and tries to explain but realizes how tired he is holding everything in—it took him decades. Erwin addressed it only after loving someone so ardently that he was willing to give up years-long prideful habits—all to love you more. He is exhausted, and your lips are so soft and so near, offering the sheer comfort he needs. It's parted slightly; if his tongue were to slip inside, it would send him into great bliss. Erwin is exhausted right now; perhaps he’d share his thoughts after this overwhelming, trembling warmth subsides.
For now, he at least tries to give a small context, "This is the best birthday I've ever had."
"Y-you think so?!" What have you done? You've been thinking about it for months! How could it happen without you knowing? "We spent the day indoors. We haven't even done anything special yet."
"You'd get quite full of yourself if you knew."
"You're trying to escape for not listening to my crochet blabbers."
"I don't want to get sappy today. Can't we just continue?"
"Well, uh… I really want to know what I did," you avert your gaze away. "I've been at the edge lately, thinking of ways to make you say you got the best birthday today—with me. Now that you finally say it, however…"
Again, it's as if you hit a nail, albeit unsure where and how you did.
"And there you have it. Your answer."
"Huh?" It took you a while to process that. "Because you're with me?"
He nods, albeit in a teasing manner.
"Eek. The sap shudders me."
"That's why I asked if we could just continue where we left off."
"The crocheting, indeed." you tease, but as you're about to reach the tool again, Erwin carries you up in his arms. He doesn't even need to tell you where he'd bring you. The impatient man would straight up lead you to bed to show what he wants.
Instead of scolding him for cutting the lecture off, you sigh and muffle your head in his neck, "You have to thank god it's your birthday today."
"Oh, yes of course," he kisses the crown of your head. "Thank you, dear."

My dash put your rb about tragedies next to an Infinity Train post so now I'm curious - have you watched IT? What cartoons do you watch or would you recommend?
Zero idea what Infinity Train is, and the answer to your questions about cartoons is that I pretty much don't watch them at all. The last one I watched was Centaurworld, which I only did on a whim because of some really close friends, and haven't touched any since- before that, it was Devilman Crybaby (which is a fucking amazing tragedy but is also rife with gore, body horror, sex, rape, etc). And that's pretty much it. I don't watch movies, either- the last one I've watched was Promare. The only TV I can really sit through are vet shows or nature documentaries; otherwise I have to get into media through reading or gaming.
I find that cartoons/movies tend to be either too much work for me to sit through or too overwhelming sensory-wise or emotionally-wise for me to deal with. That isn't to say that they're a bad thing, but experiencing a rush of overwhelmingly positive emotions is still an overwhelming rush of emotions for me to deal with. I used to watch anime in high school, but that was primarily because I was suicidally depressed and greatly understimulated, so it was the only thing that could get me to feel something, as well as the only method I had to engage with other people. Now that I'm out of that environment, in university, and living on my own, it's just too much all at once. I can't deal with the rush of visual and emotional input it gives me, and I don't have the time in the day to waste to deal with me hyperfixating on something so intensely.
Plus I can actually play video games now- which were banned in my household til I was 17- and I've found that video games tend to work better for me atm for portioning out story content because instead of me passively absorbing everything all at once, I have to work through it myself. I'm an extremely fast reader, so I burn through books like a hot knife through butter, but games force me to slow down because they tire me out way quicker than a book would, and its easier for me to stop playing a game and pick it back up again than it is for me to pause during a show. Doesn't give me neural whiplash as much.
Tbh, me disliking cartoons/movies probably because I was raised in a household where I wasn't allowed to watch tv at all unless it was either rated G- so anything disney or with a 7 or under rating- or 'educational', like nature documentaries (but even those were heavily limited- can't let the kid see anything with blood or sex in it! Even if its animals!). AND because nothing I liked to watch was 'child appropriate' or upsetting to others- I distinctly remember my mom telling me that she was always disturbed by the stuff I liked to watch because it was all sad, like Fox and the Hound or Happy Feet- reading was the only outlet I could get away with. So I just never learned how to engage with that form of content in a way that works with my adhd/autistic brain, and is now too exhausting for me to bother with.
(also i tend to find american cartoon styles to be super fucking ugly so i have no desire to watch them at all. centaurworld got a pass simply bc they were so creative with their art styles and how it works into the themes that i enjoyed it, but thats because i can pretty much always enjoy something i'd otherwise fucking despise if its done well enough, since its the artistry of it that i'm interested in. but being picky about artstyles also drastically cuts down on what i like to watch)

Big fan here! I’ve been rereading a lot of your work lately and it literally helped me mentally through college, especially ghost stories and willing sacrifice, i have so many questions i hope they don’t sound rude if so please feel free to ignore them!
1. was one of your inspirations for the witch’s apprentice rapunzel? Hope no one asked this before
2. Do you avoid describing the characters on purpose? I like to imagine my own version of them when i read but ngl it gets hard sometimes but maybe that’s me being uncreative
3. Do you recommend any media for the poor monsterfuckers such as myself? Especially dating games and anime?
Hi, thank you so so much for both the kind words and the ask, I absolutely love answering questions like this!! So glad to hear I could help you through college <3
It honestly wasn't but that's also a really fun comparison, I really enjoy stories where characters are forced into one location, isolation is one of my fav themes to explore. The main inspo was the fact that Eden has been one of my ocs for years and years and I rlly wanted to find a way to write about her and her apprentice-turned-reader lol. It's a pretty small sliver of her story but I love writing about her
So if you're talking about my reader characters, I do avoid describing them whenever possible, I don't want to exclude anyone so I try to be really careful with my word choices. (which is funny because they do tend to be the characters I have the best idea of their names and what they look like before I scrub them of their serial numbers to make them a reader character) As for other characters, it very much is not on purpose lol, so I have this thing called aphantasia which basically just means I cannot visually imagine literally anything. Because of that, when I was younger I always found character descriptions really irritating because I couldn't do any imagining so they didn't really do anything for me so I would pretty habitually skip descriptions. This has effectively made me forget they are supposed to exist and also made it so I am fairly unfamiliar with what should be in a description so they always feel weird and clunky to me when I do write them lol. My wonderful friends remind me for my big projects like my novels but for shorter stuff for tumblr, I just have a list of like 4 traits that I'll try and mention Somewhere but other than that, they tend to get avoided and/or accidentally skipped
I'm so bad at consuming actual media, most of my monster fuckery is from other lovely authors on tumblr. I will always rec the Predator movies bc I love yautja but then again, I still prefer peoples stories to the actual movies lol. Best of luck finding some good stuff out there, if you do find any lmk I'd love to hear about it

movie buff questions: any number with a 6 in it. <3
6. Favorite movie from the 90’s? Literally the first one I thought of was Hocus Pocus. So I'm going with that. It's goddamn incredible anyway.
16. Ever watched a movie just because you heard the effects were awesome? YES! Dawn of the Planet of The Apes. saw it in theaters like 10 times throughout the summer after graduating high school bc the theater was right down the block. shit is insane.
26. Best experience going to the movies Honestly the most recent was Everything Everywhere All At Once. My first viewing was on opening week and that was a PHENOMENAL audience to be a part of- especially recently. Also I will never forget the energy that was in the theater after The Grand Budapest Hotel. shit was awesome.
36. Movie quote you live by? lmao it's not from a movie but for years I had this quote up on my facebook page from Westworld "You can't play God without being aquainted with the Devil". Facts man. Thanks A-Hop.
46. Favorite cop film? Gonna go with Fargo on this one I think. Feels right.
56. Movie you completely nerd-out over every time it’s mentioned? Lord of the Rings. You will always get me with Lord of the Rings. No question. No doubt. I have so many lotr related facts and anecdotes and prop replicas.
60. Most visually stunning movie you’ve seen? God I can't choose. I really can't. so many movies are too beautiful I cannot pick just one. help me god.... OK 1917. that bitch has so much going for it.
61. A movie your parents introduced you to? lmao so many. kudos to them tho for taking me to Spirited Away at the ripe old age of baby.
62. Favorite genre? Gothic (clearly- and it's not the same as horror writ. large- there's a difference, even though many horror films overlap with gothic films as well and the whole horror genre literally owes everything to Gothic fiction but I digress)- also because there's lots of elements that go into gothic from other genres like romance and comedy that people tend to forget about- and I'll always take a good genre mix any day over just... one plain old thing? I like a Genre Ensemble if you will and Gothic covers that the best I think.
63. Least favorite genre? Hallmark Rom-coms. sitcoms in general. or reality tv shit or documentaries (lotta people say they're "unbiased" but the nature of perspective and subjectivity in film is bias. never as fully informative of facts as they purport to be and I can't stand the fuckin things. boring as sin).
64. Comedy movie that you didn’t find funny? First one I thought of was Bridesmaids. Deadass. I don't think a lot of mainstream comedies do humor very well anyway. Also fucking anything written by James Gunn that man literally only knows how to write one movie and it was guardians of the galaxy vol. 1 and literally everything he's done since has been copy-pasted from that script (and especially suicide squad. hate that move so much forever and always what a piece of shit).
65. Horror movie that didn’t scare you? Most don't??? not that bad anyway. Fucking M3gan was literally the most unscary shit I've ever seen recently tho. but then again I grew up on Child's Play like I'm immune to freaky doll shit.
66. Favorite remake of an old movie? ok but dicks out for the planet of the apes remakes. I'm so serious. Andy Serkis put his whole pussy into that monkey.
67. A movie that started a passion for you? um... this is kindof a hard question to answer because movies/shows made me want to persue writing/directing as a career. There have been a lot of them, and the more I see the more I want to do it, so the list is ongoing, but LOTR and Joker 2019 are the two biggest contributors that I can think of off the top of my head. LOTR bonus features are what I lived for and got me passionate about the actual filmmaking process and special effects and stuff, Joker is the one that solidified for me the career choice.
68. A movie that sparked an interesting conversation? in my household The Godfather will never not be the film that sparks interesting conversations- bc my dad worked with a guy that was up for the part of sollazzo, and he was on the books and getting payed and everything when Marlon Brando requested that a guy he knew play the part instead, so he got the boot. BUT!! since he was on the books there was a term in his contract that he get residuals anyway- and so he still does. he was at my parent's wedding and everything. crazy shit.
69. The main movie you remember from your childhood? my childhood was filled with them. Can't be specific about this one I'm afraid. Just trust me. Many.

Elvis Music Tag
Thank you darlin' @powerofelvis for tagging me! 💗 Sorry it took me a thousand years to get to!!
I’m tagging @aconflagrationofmyown @tiredbuthappy @fic-over-cannon and whoever else wants to do it!
Last Elvis Song You Listened To: Okay, so I JUST discovered the Home Recordings album and I love it for so many reasons, but one is that he sings part of "If I Loved You" from Carousel and my musical theater loving heart is BURSTING because even though he's like screwing around a bit and it's certainly not "perfect," it gives the tiniest glimpse of how amazing he could have been in a stage musical (especially with even a smidge of extra training). *sob* Also, I'm pretty sure he's the one playing piano on it and I love it when he plays piano. And for some reason he also says "shit" in the middle of the track in between his beautiful singing which is just hilarious considering the song.
Current Elvis Song Stuck In Your Head: Wearin' That Loved On Look and The Girl of My Best Friend are both so catchy, I wake up in the middle of the night with them playing in my head!
Favorite Live Performance Moment: UGH, this is like choosing a favorite child. He just has so many good ones!! I love his performances from the first '69 Vegas concerts (audio only, unfortunately). He still has really endearing nerves and he tells bad jokes and laughs at himself a lot and there's just a lot of unique energy. The famous Are You Lonesome Tonight laughing fit comes from one of those nights and that is one of my favorite things EVER to listen to. My favorite visuals are probably Trying to Get to You and One Night from '68 and maybe You've Lost That Lovin Feeling from '70. And literally so many more...
Favorite Genre/Era You Like To Hear Elvis Sing Most: This often depends on my mood, but overall, I love where his vocals are at from '68-'70. He still has that youthful grit, but is really beginning to develop that delish lower register. I also like 1960 a lot, with that lighter, tenor-y feel. VERY different vocal sounds, but I think that was the utter magic of Elvis, was that he could sing so many different styles and had such an incredible range as a vocalist.
Current Favorite Elvis Song (bc how can you pick!): Without Love
Elvis Song You Tend To Skip: Anything after about '71 is hard for me to listen to. It's not that he didn't have some good stuff going on (I mean, Unchained Melody is a freakin' marvel), but because of the decline in his health/drug use, it's like I can HEAR how sick he is because the voice is such a physical instrument and so dependent on the health of the person it's attached to.
What Kind Of Music Did You Listen To Before/Besides Elvis: Besides E, I have a pretty eclectic music taste, but you can always find musical theater tracks and good vocalists on my playlists. Faouzia's new album was on repeat prior to the rebirth of my Elvis obsession.
Are You Collecting Elvis' CD's, Cassette Tapes, 8-Tracks, or Records? Nope, that's not really my thing. My partner collects all of that stuff (non-Elvis) and our place is full of it LOL. I like the convenience of streaming for sure.
Is There Any Other Music You've Started Listening To Because Of Elvis: Elvis has always been around for me, so I wouldn't say that BUT I am really enjoying discovering different Elvis music that I wasn't necessarily aware of before!!
Last Live Performance You Were At: I went to see Hadestown (the musical) in July. Last concert was...good lord, I don't even remember. Maybe Kelly Clarkson? Or something local.
If You Could Have Been At Any Of Elvis' Live Performances, Which Would Choose: '68 Special, '69 Vegas (pink scarf, baby!!), and the '70 Vegas shows. I'm not much for huge, crazy crowds so the 50s stuff would definitely be OUT unfortunately, and the 70's arena shows were too big. I mean, I would've gone if I'd had the chance, I'm sure!

Hiii I just saw your recent gifset and I was wondering if you could share some colouring/quality tips for gifs?? I've been having some issues lately and I'm trying to collect knowledge from people with great skills, thanks in advance!
hiii!! <3 first of all, thanks omg :(( i feel absolutely underqualified to be giving advice but i'll try to tell u some stuff that i think makes gifs look nicer (i'll do it after a read more so that i don't clog up the dash)
idk how much experience you have in making gifs so i'm gonna be all over the place probably lmao sorry!!
first all, in connection to quality, using anything other than photoshop to gif (like websites or stuff like that) is gonna make your gifs look much less hq no matter how nice the actual footage is. sadly no website can beat ps :( also, using 4k/1080p clips is going to make your job much easier. I use 4kdownloader to get videos from youtube and it works great most of the times.
in terms of processing, once i get my video i use vapoursynth but i don't sharpen/denoise there. i think the vs sharpening is a bit too harsh sometimes and the denoising can be too extreme. (i know ppl get great results w sharpening/denoising there tho!! i've never got it to work like that lol) after the clip is opened in ps, i sharpen there. my settings are very basic (amount 500% and radius 0.4px and then i do that again but with amount 10% and radius 10px) if the original clip is too lq and i'm not satisfied with how the gif looks i might use topaz clean / denoise a little bit. but i try to keep that light. in my personal opinion, i think gifs that are too smooth (so much so that their hair gets blurry and stuff) just don't look as nice. i'd rather have a slightly grainy gif over a very very smooth gif where ppl don't look like ppl.
a lil trick i do when i'm not as pleased with the quality and the gifs are from mvs is to add a little bit of grain using the smart filter. so then the grain looks like it's there on purpose and not bc the og clip is bad (other times i just add noise for aesthetics like with my keppie gifset)
another tool some ccs use is high pass. i feel like high pass needs to be used lightly because sometimes it just makes people look like dolls :(( it's like it takes away all texture and it just looks... slightly odd? i tried to use it a few times but in the end i went back to my own sharpening. i just think it's a tool that needs to be used v carefully.
ok, coloring time!! coloring can literally fix a gif sometimes hahah. like a gif that looks kinda grainy suddenly u color it and it becomes ten times better. when i color, i start by messing with the curves and i tend to do this (this pic is just me messing with a random gif hahah)
Tumblr media
i obviously play around with that but i love doing this because it makes my blacks darker. i also play around with exposure and i tend to bring the exposure up a little, bring the offset down a little and the gamma correction up (again, me messing around randomly just so u can see how my settings might end up looking visually. the numbers change all the time because it's not that i do it exactly like this all the time)
Tumblr media
i've been told (and i can attest to it myself) that having gifs with a lot of contrast is good for quality so i feel like doing these prev things (and also messing with the blacks in selective color) allows me to bring out that contrast and also make gifs that i enjoy (i'm a high contrast gif lover) but you also have to be mindful not to make your subjects too white by upping the exposure or messing with curves too much. whitewashing is a no no, even if whitewashed gifs always end up looking less grainy >:( for skintone i play around with color balance and selective color mostly. if the whitewashing in the original video is too much, i might go to color lookup, use the preset 3strip, set the layer as 'darken' and mess with the opacity and then if it ends up looking too red i might do the same with a 'fall color' layer and lower the opacity even more for that one (or else the gifs looks too yellow). i also play around with the reds and the yellows in hue/saturation
finally, when i export the gifs, i make sure that i pick the saving mode (i'm sure this is not the proper way to call this but anyways sdfasd) that makes the gif looks better. like sometimes i find that with green gifs some settings make the gif look atrocious so i have to use adaptable for those but anyways i usually mess around w that hahah
Tumblr media
idk if this was useful in any sort of way??? if u have a question about something that i mentioned here or i want to ask me more u can totally dm me or come back and ask me 'hey girl wtf?' because i'm so so bad at explaining things by text!! also i wrote this under the idea that u are sort of knowledgable on how to gif but idk !!

the opposite of a good idol bad artist example i mentioned with eunbi and chungha is one of my favorite new-ish girl group members is mia of everglow. i observe shes remarkable consistent in the quality of her performances, and for a 6 member girl group she has half the line distribution of entire songs and title tracks. much more than she SHOULD have but she does really well with the workload. she has dance breaks despite not being a main dancer, raps despite not being a rapper and is never winded or appears fatigued on stage. she even has impressive high note consistency despite hard choreography and singing half the lines of a six membered girl group song. yet a lot of people think of her as robotic or boring. shes a good idol but theres not any artistry there, just because shes good at execution doesnt mean shes creative or engaging in a way that makes people think about her as a performer. do you have any favorites that arent necessarily engaging or unique in a way that builds identity or is that the main thing you look for when wanting to follow someone
hmmm. that's a good question. i wouldn't say that i'm like, hardline looking for people who are unique and that's the only metric i use to gauge whether i like someone, bc that's a lot of pressure to put on yourself as a viewer and i don't think you need to do that all the time, especially with kpop. however, because i have tastes (visually and musically) that tend towards the more unusual side, i tend to filter out the things that i find unengaging fairly quickly and move on. i skimmed through my compiled playlist of this year's releases and to be honest there are not that many on there that fit the 'not engaging' category (imo, obvs). i think the big difference for me is that i maintain a pretty distinct separation between 'stuff that i watch to enjoy the performance' and 'stuff i listen to bc i think it sounds good'. so there's very few 'unengaging' people that i would recommend for people to watch, but that doesn't stop me from having a lot of songs saved from groups and people that i never watch performances for. literally one of my most listened songs this year is drippin's game and i couldn't name you a single member or even recognize them on sight. everyone looks for different things when they follow artists, and it's not always uniform across the board, even for the same person.

hi willow!! 3 and 26 for the writer asks? :>
3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed?
Tumblr media
my writing ritual always starts out with things that i probably shouldn't be putting so much focus on LOL and it usually starts with creating a pinterest board, or looking at one i've already made. i have to see everything in order to get my creative juices flowing, and so i try to acquire as many visual aids as i can to help with the process. i also spend an absurd amount of time finding the right ambiance and/or white noise to write with. for southern charm, it was a lot of red dead redemption with thunderstorm backgrounds LOL and then for honey, don't feed me it's been a lot of the ghost of tsushima ost, things like that. at some point — and this has to happen, in order for me to get anywhere — i go on like a three hour walk and listen to music, usually from a playlist i've already made for the fic i'm trying to write, and i just daydream what is to come. i really enjoy this part because i can just put my body on autopilot and put all my energy into my brain. this is all cursed bc i'm so sure none of it is necessary LOL but it must happen. it must.
26. How do you get into your character’s head? How do you get out? Do you ever regret going in there in the first place?
Tumblr media
well, first of all, i have to have — what i believe to be — a very serious understanding of their character, and even if it's not exactly canon, i have to have a decent grasp on something. i can't half-ass comprehend a character, which is why i'm hesitant to write someone like toji or gojo or hawks for example, because i think they are more complex than they seem. it takes my full focus to dissect a character like that, and it's not something i can do quickly or on command; it takes genuine effort. i also have to find something — anything at all — that is myself in them. it's the best way for me to relate to them and therefore write them, and 99% of the time, it's never the pretty things LOL
writing bakugou, i call a lot on my own issues with insecurity and the struggle i can sometimes have expressing myself correctly in words. dabi is — as you know, mao dearest LOL — a whirlwind of things; i quite literally explore the ugliest sides of myself, and i don't mean that i am "like" him or can actually relate to him, but — that voice in your head that flares up on instinct when you're angry, how deeply things from your past still affect you, that overwhelming, all encompassing fear of rejection and not being enough, all that bad stuff — i dig into that to write with that at the forefront of my mind. i take all these things that naturally occur to me and then put myself in their shoes, if that makes sense, and try to multiply it in a way that is justifiable to their character.
i don't find it too hard to get out of those spaces either, and so i don't regret them ! bc they tend to be dark places and i grow tired of living in them, and actively look forward to writing something else.

20 Questions for Writers
thanks for the tag, @fickleminder! <3
just wanted to do this for fun, so no tags :> i'll leave the questions below for anyone who wants to do it though! u can say i tagged u hihi <3
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
i currently only have 10 :') i deleted/orphaned a lot of my old stuff from previous fandoms (even purged my ff net, which i still regret bc i didn't have any backups)
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
21,432!
3. What fandoms do you write for?
currently mainly writing for obey me, but i have written for genshin, haikyuu, pokemon, ensemble stars, my hero academia, final fantasy, harvest moon (story of seasons), and the inazuma eleven series
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
name - genshin impact, xiao/aether like a bird perched on your shoulder - haikyuu, atsumu/hinata burnt toast, sunday - obey me, mephisto/mc more than they can say - obey me, mephisto/mc out of focus, eye to eye - obey me, beel/mc
5. Do you respond to comments?
as much as i can! i foget to sometimes though lol
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
i don't think i write particularly angst-y fics, but the one that would fit the bill the most would be more than they can say
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
most of my fics have happy-ish endings, i tend to write fluff more often than not >< i'll just say before the constellations of autumn arrive since it's more or less a reunion fic
8. Do you get hate on fics?
not really, thankfully! i do get the occassional "i'll kill u /pos" comments, which i enjoy :>
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
i used to, but don't anymore :') i kinda suck at it so it's a good thing i stopped lol
10. Do you write crossovers?
i've written my fair share of pokemon au fics... which does fall in the crossover category, i think
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that i'm aware of, thankfully!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes, back on ff net! idk where it is now tho :') all i know is that it was a tsurugi/tenma fic
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
not yet! maybe one day.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
heavy question. i have a lot of favorites, but the ship i will always love and fall back to regardless of whether or not i'm in the fandom anymore is atsuhina (atsumu/hinata) from haikyuu
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Tumblr media
I WANNA FINISH IT SO BAD especially after the phantom butterfly ssr devilgram :'(
16. What are your writing strengths?
i honestly have no idea, lol. a lot of people say i write dialogues really well, and that my characterizations are always on point, so... maybe that?
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
oh this one i know. visualization. i still have trouble with it sometimes but at least i can say i've improved on it lol
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
depends, i guess? it can be done well, imo. i've read some fics where the author inserts their own native language in their writing.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
inazuma eleven. funnily enough, i've been in a pokemon fan for longer but have only thought about writing for it after i've already written for ina11
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
they're all my children u can't make me pick (<- has insane overthinking periods where i think none of my writing is good enough)
(questions under the cut!)
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
3. What fandoms do you write for?
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

10. Do you write crossovers?
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
16. What are your writing strengths?
17. What are your writing weaknesses?

February 6, 2024
Saw Argylle in theatres and it was such an unserious movie omg. Like I went in there expecting some physical comedy, visual gags, wordplay, twists, Kingsman type stuff. And it delivered, but I don't think it was quite as fun as Kingsman. I do think they went a little heavy handed with the theme motifs, but the soundtrack was good and fun. Overall it was fun. One thing though, seeing an average-sized woman as a superspy was SO NICE.
I've decided I want to pare down my Goodreads To-Read shelf ( I know I know I was supposed to have switched by now), and I'm starting from the back, or the books I added earliest. Those tend to be books that were once crazy popular, so libraries have a ton of libby copies but not crazy amounts of people checking them out (so I can support my libraries and not feel compelled to pirate everything I read yikes). Started reading The Fifth Wave and whewww it's so.. unfortunate. I'm about a third of the way through (in two days!) and I just feel bad for everyone. All so pitiful. Though speaking of Goodreads, all of my friends read these super academic nonfiction or dense, thematic fiction, and I feel lowkey juvenile with my YA. But! I'm working nonfiction and classics into my rotation, and anyway I need to stop comparing myself to my friends in all respects.
This is just turning into a media journal whoops I'll try to cut that down (though, even my commentary can lend insights into myself, who I am, who I'm becoming, etc).
Update: I finished The Fifth Wave in four days and it was SUCH A FUN READ!!! A shame the movie did so poorly, but I think fitting so much into two hours effectively would've been difficult. About to start the next one! [edit, 2 mins later bc I have to talk about this book more: listen. listen. It had so much, so much, like it was written just for me. Puppy love, a girl who is terrified forced into becoming fierce, action, a man who loves her to the ends of the earth, losing and subsequently searching for the child figure as the only thing tying her to life, the pacing was excellent, the voice(s) was(were) excellent, and even though I managed to guess several of the major twists a ways away, the author still managed to write the reveals in ways that were impactful, some of which resulted in somatic reactions. Twists shouldn't just jerk a reader around, a good story should have clues that could be plausibly pieced together (maybe my only critique is that the clues were a little too obvious, but on the other hand it's a lot of fun to guess at twists and put things together and feel smart when I get things right).]
Today I'm thankful that my pre-seminar chat with my ceramics-friend went well. The seminar is super bio-heavy and she's not really a bio person, so we're doing pre-seminar chats to help her get more comfortable with the material (today's was mostly just me ranting about phylogenies lol). She's very intelligent obv and is getting the ideas, but it's tough for me to engage with any conversation when I know that not everyone in the group is keeping up because they're unfamiliar with a lot of the "bio lore". Hopefully tomorrow she feels confident enough to comment.
I'm really tired. I don't know where all my hours went today.

Pretty sure your sudden spike in Fate content is gonna be like the third time I check something out bc you started posting it (I know next to nothing about Fate. In fact, I think I now know less than before you started). I'm rly not sure what the best starting point to get into it is, though. Any recommendation? (also I got Moriarty on your quiz and now I want to know why he's so beloved)
Oh sick! Awesome! I hope you enjoy it!
Uhm, so, Fate notoriously swaps out like their whole creative team from work to work, so some of it is really good, and some is really bad, and some in the middle, because it’s made by very different people. The things I am most into are UBW, and Fate Go. Fate Go is a little gatcha phone game, that suffers from the fate of the whole fate franchise but as a single unit. They swap out writers from arc and event to arc and event, so sometimes you’re living and thriving, and sometimes you’re like *thousand yard glazed, pained stare* ‘why the fuck did I download this game?’ Very mixed bag. I enjoy it because I just kinda blow through any arc I don’t like and skim, and then go hella into the good ones, but it’s very much an individual matter of taste one. It’s very fun to collect spirits and get to know them though, and some of the arcs are fantastic. Also, they have made/are making some of the Fate Go arcs into shows, and I expect the ones that are of good game arcs are good? But I haven’t actually checked any out myself yet--I really need to watch E Pluribus Unum, because it was an easy top 3 arc for me in the game.
I’m big into Fate, but I actually have approximate knowledge of many things? And have not consumed as much media as you’d think. I tend to hear people really like Fate Zero, and very mixed reviews of Apocrypha, but I would wholeheartedly recommend the Fandom Classic(tm) and my personal fave as where to start, which is Unlimited Blade Works.
Sorry this is so long. Okay, so. Originally, Fate Stay/Night was a visual novel with three paths/routes: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven’s Feel. All of these are shows now. Unlimited Blade Works was made twice. Do not watch the early one; it’s bad. Watch the 2014 TV series--it’s on Netflix right now. Don’t watch the English dub--the VAs are...not great. 110% recommend watching it in Japanese/original dub, with subtitles. (This one)
Tumblr media
My usual pitch is that if you’re a normal person, you’ll probably go “This was a little confusing, but I really got into it: 8.3/10″, and if you’re like me and you never really gave up on wanting to become a superhero and save the world some day, you’ll go: “It was fantastic, 18/10, but it also ripped out my soul and left me wounded but somehow in an okay way.” Either way very worth watching. Since it’s not the first route, there are some things they don’t explain about the world because they kind of assume the viewer will know, but that’s pretty minimal--it’s def coherent enough that the more confusing bits are more of a “Uh, okay. I think.” than a “W-What the fuck is going on?”
It’s really good. Two seasons, the most beautiful fighting in almost anything I’ve ever seen, phenomenal soundtrack, and one of the best show opens (Season 2′s) of any show I ever saw. All around a just big blanket rec from me. It’s a long-time fan favorite for a reason. It’s one of my fave shows ever :’-] It was. Very personal to me.
Uhhhh what else--okay so, on Netflix if you watch it there, and a lot of streaming sites, they list “Episode 0″ or “Prologue” as the first episode? This was originally bonus content, not the first episode. It’s basically the first episode from not the MC’s point of view, but a different major character. It’s got some really great character moments and insight into Rin and Archer, and it’s fun, but since it was originally bonus, the pacing is super weird? So I would recommend you start with actual episode 1/Winter Days, A Fateful Night instead? Unless you just want to. Like it won’t mess up the show, but it might give you a weird idea of what the pacing is. So you can watch it first if you want, or later whenever you’re curious about those two, just like, if you start on it, don’t get overwhelmed by the stuff they’re not explaining, or the weird pacing. It’s supposed to be bonus content haha.
Very happy you’re interested! I really love UBW so I hope you enjoy it! If there’s anything else you want to ask feel totally free! I just don’t want to ramble for eight years about my special interest and fall into a black hole unprompted haha. : D Very happy you’ve been intrigued by my weird spike of fate content WAIT YOU ASKED ABOUT CRIME GRANDPA HOW COULD I FORGET.
Woof this is gonna be a long ask answer. Uhhhh, so Moriarty is from Fate Grand Order/Fate Go, the phone game. The game has three major arc sets so far: Grand Order, Epic of Remnant, and Cosmos in the Lostbelts. He’s from Epic of Remnant, and he’s universally beloved because he’s amazing. The MC in Fate Go is like 16, but he or she (you get to pick) is constantly having to risk their life and be hurt and traumatized and watch people die to save the world because there’s no one else to do it, and usually people are...not super nice to them. Moriarty shows up in the first of the second set of arcs and is like ‘Haha that’s a wholeass human child tho. Guys. Guys, a-are you sure about this?’ and he’s really there to pull of a massive evil culmination-of-my-life’s-entire-work-and-value scheme, but this kid is nice to him, and has nobody who looks out for them, and Evil Has Standards, so (Arc End Spoilers for that one ahead) he ends up giving up basically at the last minute. He had a plan that was totally working and could have won, but can’t really pull the trigger, because winning would mean this kid who has been nice to him and is already a massive pile of trauma and pressure and mental illness would die, and he cares more about them than his life’s goal. In Go usually boss fights are progressively harder, but his is super easy because he throws it, and chooses to lose, and basically throws away his life’s work for this one kid because nobody else is taking care of them, and lets himself get killed. This is a pattern with him. Other high points include later being 5 seconds into a scheme when Frankenstein (the girl one, who in fgo is like 14) stops him to call him Papa and asks for help, so he adopts her on the spot and just is her dad forever after that. He’s very goofy and I love him; he’s evil, but I’d trust him with my life, because he’s more good than he is evil, even though he’s both. Basically he’s just a very interesting and well written villain, but he’s also like, the /best/ dad in the game at the same time, and his dialogue is amazing. Evil Has Standards team dad poster man. He’s like the only adult in Fate Go who actually is responsible, which is fuckin wild. I’ll try to find some good screenshots of his dialogue. Anyway he’s incredible and I’m so happy you got him; Crime Papa is life.
Here have some Moriarty junk: (Shinjuku arc you have 3 partners, and the other two are adults but harass the MC constantly, and this was the dynamic. Bless Moriarty)
Tumblr media
And here’s some him roasting Sherlock memes and being good dad to the MC

warning: LONG AND RAMBLE-Y POST
i've been thinking lately about the way i look at star fox and how i make my headcanons and art and what i share with my writing and stuff.
i notice i... tend to be a lot more... "light hearted" (i can't think of a better word) than most people, i think. basing off what i see on twitter, on tumblr, on discord, from fanfics and fanart or to the current independent projects going on such as afis, ppl like diving into the "darker" side of things for one reason or another, whether it's for personal reasons or just emotional potential if sf was made to be more than nintendo's testing ground for new game mechanics they want to try, or bc it just sounds cool.
i see it a lot, and while not one thing is a universal headcanon, i always can't help but feel like
i'm missing smth.
everything i make the majority of the time is a shitpost (i'm hilarious) or when i do something more serious it's nothing extremely deep or has layers, nor do i ever truly go into the "dark" territory (dealing with complicated or sensitive subjects). my "serious" stuff will be vague art or it'll be extremely straightforward or not the most devastating thing in the world.
i question myself as to why i have a habit of shitposting so much, of why whenever i'm constantly thinking of scenarios i see sf and sw being more relaxed with each other when they're not fighting or whatever or that they'd even eventually become friends and sargasso becomes star wold and star fox hq with the great fox being their main transport and fox and wolf are both in charge and work together- anyways
i constantly worry that the more genuine stuff i make is ooc. constantly. it's smth i can never truly shake and if i will, it's going to take a while. i've been trying to hard to not go and delete all of my fics from ao3 bc of that fear. i fear me projecting onto wolf so much has skewed me being able to see him for the character he is. i fear that i'm so off with my portrayals with everyone bc i tend to be so silly that when i try to be more serious no one will take it... seriously.
i don't hate deeper stuff or thinking abt the potential of there being layers or a darker side to things or more serious stuff. i have my own hcs and stuff i haven't shared, mostly out of again, fear. i have a bunch of stuff abt wolf, fox, all of them i haven't shared bc i'm scared, and i also don't see a point in me sharing my personal thoughts beyond simple things (except when ppl ask) or simple hcs bc.... mine?? in the grand scheme of everything i think don't... matter.
and ik i need to stop thinking that.
but?? darker stuff isn't my strongsuit. i can think and visualize in my head like no tomorrow, but putting everything into words when asked, i'm AWFUL. i always feel bad whenever i reblog those ask memes asking my opinions bc my mind blanks and idk how to explain. but when no one asks i can write a whole fucking essay with details that don't matter
i think the reason i tend to do more light hearted stuff is bc... i want to make ppl smile. that's rlly all i want. and i want to have fun doing my hobbies like drawing and writing and i want to extend the fun to others. even my more serious stuff, like my most recent fic i posted to ao3 wolf and fox have ptsd, i can never ever dive ALL the way in, i can never have a sad ending with what i post even if i think of a thing and it had a sad ending. bc of that, honestly my most recent fic's writing feels super choppy and ooc to me.
i like being optimistic, but i don't want to come across as naive. i don't want to come across as a stupid, happy go lucky idiot. i don't want to come across as annoying. and if i stop being optimistic on here, then my cynical nature will be here full force. i'm more pessimistic irl, i rlly am. i'm not all doom and gloom but i tend to dwell on the negative and that's probably why i hate everything i create despite enjoying creating
but if i'm so happy in my portrayals and everything's fine.... but everyone else tends to look deeper, not even all dark and stuff, but more layers and more meaningful, either my critical thinking skills are shit or i'm just missing smth. i'm not sure it's a bad thing bc my friends enjoy what i make and they say they love what i do.
but i don't want my silliness with sf to make my serious stuff have less meaning to it bc all i do is be ridiculous.
so am i missing smth?

(1/11)Oh my gosh yesss I'm glad that you like long messages too because I talk way too much 😂 (And yeah about my friend and just hanging out w/ her more that's exactly what I was thinking 😂) It's actually kind of funny bc just yesterday I was hanging out at her house and her younger brother needed to go to Walmart and I was like 'I've been meaning to go to Walmart, I'll take you' and ofc since I have a bluetooth radio adapter the whole drive I had my Spotify going with some quality k-bops, lol
2)And as we were driving I noticed him kind of jamming and I was like 'Oh my god Mickey do you actually like this???' And he was Like 'yeah, these are some good bops 👍' I was shooketh. I had to go home before I had the chance to show him any music videos but he says he's open to watching some with me next time I see him. One way or another I'm going to turn someone in my social circle into a kpop fan you mark my words ☝ and then maybe we can team up and try to work on his sister some more 😂
3)I only started first getting into kpop last June so I'm still very new, but it's definitely super frustrating how so many ppl act like it's an inherently bad or cringey genre of music just bc it's kpop! The stigma is ridiculous! I also started out with BTS (lol) and since they're pretty popular in the US at least I was able to be like 'See, this isn't just a niche thing, lots of people know abt and like this group' but of course my dad still says 'Just cause it's popular doesn't make it good'
4)And I'm like? You're a band teacher, you of all people should understand that music doesn't have to be in your native language (or even have lyrics) in order for you to enjoy it, but go off I guess... It's the same with one of my college friends. They make fun of me for liking kpop but this is coming from some who still treats March 22nd (the day My Chemical Romance broke up) as a day of mourning. Like, no tea no shade no pink lemonade, MCR was a good band nothing wrong with liking them.
5)But like if you're 22 and you still haven't grown out of your emo phase do you really have room to pick on other people for their music taste?  🤷 Anyway that's the person who follows my main that I didn't want to know I had a kpop sb. I think I made it around July. Tbh it was pretty dead for most of 2018. But like I said I've started using it way more since I recently revealed that it exists, lol. Especially since that good good Astro cb 👏💗😩 But honestly Astro is such a blessing
6)Idk how I lived so long w/o them. When I first got into kpop I was planning on just sticking to BTS since the reaction to me being into kpop was so volatile. I was like 'I'm only into one group, ppl already are negative about me liking kpop so I'm just gonna stick to this and not become a full on multifandom fan' and then in Nov I accidentally let myself fall in love with Monsta X and that plan was foiled. And realizing I wasn't gonna be able to stick to just one anymore opened the floodgates
7)And I was like okay in that case, let's just start getting into *all groups* Lol. My story of getting into Astro was actually bc of my best friend's roommate (can you tell I have like one friend and my whole social circle kinda revolves around her? Lol) so this roommate when she heard me being sad about having no kpop friends was like 'oh hey, I'm kinda into kpop' and it turns out she didn't like very many groups and was one of the ppl who blah blah BTS is overrated, which ya know isn't ideal8)But I was just really desperate to have someone to talk about kpop with. And Astro was her favorite so I was like, okay I'll get into them so that I have something to talk about with her! So I started watching some videos and I fell in love with them pretty much instantly! And I was real excited bc #1 now I can talk about kpop with someone! And #2 this group is actually amazing? Bonus! ... And then they got in a big fight about their living conditions and the roommate ended up moving out RIP
9)So that didn't work out, lol (Your story about finding them during that internship sounds amazing though! Haha) But yeah, so this is my first cb too! And although I love them w/ my whole heart and would have loved to have them in my life even sooner what an amazing cb to be your first! The concept was wonderful, the album was excellent, the visuals were to *die* for. They worked so hard and I'm so proud of them and I'm so happy we got to see their work come to fruition and get them a win 🤧🤧
10)The dance practices though? You're so right omg 💗 Me and my Rocky bias *fully* understand 😂 All of them are such good dancers?? I never fail to be impressed. Of course you know who I always end up watching tho 👀 lol (̶i̶f̶ ̶I̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶h̶a̶l̶f̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶p̶r̶e̶t̶t̶y̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶R̶o̶c̶k̶y̶'̶s̶ ̶f̶o̶o̶t̶w̶o̶r̶k̶ ̶I̶ ̶w̶o̶u̶l̶d̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶a̶l̶m̶o̶s̶t̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶p̶r̶e̶t̶t̶y̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶e̶y̶e̶s̶.̶.̶.̶)̶ ̶ I also love how at the end they always pause all dramatic for a minute and then start screaming 😂
11)It's like? Amazing talent *and* dorky personalities? What more could you ask for? Lol. In regard to your last question though Unfortunately I also won't be able to see them 😔 I live in the smack middle of the US and since they're only going to coasts all of the venues are way too far away to get to. Esp since it's the school year and I can't skip class to drive cross country for a concert much as I'd like to (Holy lord I talked over twice as much?? Why am I like this?) Talk again soon! -ASA
Okay SO I’m very sorry I haven’t had the time to answer everything until now bc I’ve been busy studying for midterms and also I was a lil trashy today since my uni closed bc of freezing rain so I slept in but I’m glad that FINALLY everything got sent like damn tumblr you really don’t want us making friends huh.
Yessssss I love the feeling of seeing someone else also get into the same interests! I’ve been pretty lucky in the sense that I grew up around mostly other asian americans, so kpop was never something that was considered super “weird,” like some people were into it and some weren’t but even if you weren’t you still would’ve been familiar with the more popular groups from when you were younger. Even now, I have a bunch of friends also into kpop (one of them is even my roommate) so tbh I was definitely the one in my friend group late to the party aha. Even my university hosts kpop nights at our bar and I’m pretty sure we have a kpop dance team as well? So tbh if I met someone new there’s probably like a 50% chance they’re into kpop or at least listen casually.
Tbh I used to be a little bit judgy too but moreso because of the obscene amount of money I’ve seen some of my friends spend (no joke one of my friends has spent probably like $500+ on Loona stuff in the past month and a half and another friend bought like 5 copies of the same album for herself like damn idk how do you have that much money).
I also really don’t like it when people bash other people’s music tastes, since I feel like it’s something so personal? Idk but for a long time I used to be really self conscious about sharing my music with other people and even now I feel like that sometimes. For me after getting into BTS I kind of expected to get really into other groups since I was in Korea anyway and I was already listening to a lot of other artists casually. For me it started with NU’EST (fell for them immediately at the same concert that I saw Astro at) and then after was Astro, and then I just started slowly getting into other groups after that (even though I haven’t totally been able to get into Got7′s music they’re SO funny and I just kinda fell for their personalities  you know).
I honestly think that they did such a wonderful job with this comeback too! I like seeing their concept evolve and mature but they’re not straying too far from their original cute concept so I feel like it’s a nice middle ground that’s very unique to them, you feel? Also I feel like the visuals especially and the execution of the whole plant concept was just done so well?? Even my friend who’s not in kpop was like “k idk who they are but that was the prettiest music video I’ve ever seen”. What are your favourite eras and songs? For me I’d have to say either the Spring Up or Baby era BUT right now my favourite song is probably Again/Should’ve Held On though tbh my mood and my tastes change like every few weeks loool.
I have no idea why I tend to be most attracted to the dances rather than vocals or rap (maybe has to do with the fact that it’s something I’ve always wished I could do but have always been bad at lmao). But Astro’s stood out to me for the exact same reason! I just thought it was so funny seeing them all break character at the end because you really get to see how hard their choreos are and you get a glimpse of their personalities like damn, how can you not stan these dummies?
That’s really unfortunate that you won’t get to see them either :/ They’re also coming to the closest city to me but it’s on a Tuesday, but I *hypothetically* looked up flight prices and tried to see if I could get away with just missing a day of classes if I flew back in the middle of the night since I have some friends who did the same thing and drove down to Buffalo but I seem to have underestimated the size of New York State LMAO. But apparently my university’s too far from the airport so it’s “not realistic” (and also I’m hella broke from travelling to Taiwan and Japan while I was in Korea but that’s a minor issue ig). I hope we do both get a chance to see them live though! Who knows, after the success of this comeback I’m expecting a lot more cbs and world tours out of them ;)
