1. Do you write fanfictions or original stories and did you ever write fanfiction?

I write (and always have written) both; I actually started writing fanfiction when I was like 10 years old, before I even knew what fanfiction was, and then later discovered that it was a whole thing. For quite a few years now fanfic has been my main thing, but I’ve got a few original things that I’m knuckling down on this year and really enjoying, so we’ll see.

2. Did you ever write your stories in the middle of class instead of paying attention?

Not in the middle of class really, but I did write like half a harry potter au fic sort of thing based off of some rp characters at the end of my year 11/12 exams. The exams were like 3 hours long each, and like, I’m not smart but I am pretty quick at theory stuff so I’d have 1.5-2 hours per exam to fill, and I would never use the note paper for notes. So I’d fold my note paper into 8ths and write reeeeeally really small and fill it all up during my extra exam time. (I still have the sheets of paper if anyone wants to see xD)

3. How many notebooks do you have filled with your writing?

Since somewhere in 2015, I have filled 25 notebooks; not including anything I wrote straight out on a computer, on my phone, on random pieces of paper, or in other notebooks that aren’t included in my numbering system, which I have lmao.

4. What’s your favorite way to write? Notebook, Word Doc, Google Docs?

By hand in notebooks. I used to write in a word doc, and I still use word to type up into and edit it, but I find writing by hand really pushes my word counts up, and forces me to do an initial edit when I type it up, especially with fanfic because I don’t draft fanfic.

5. Do you write by yourself or do you need people writing with you?

I’ve always written alone - most of my friends don’t even know that I write, or don’t write anymore themselves, so it’s just me and myself over here. I was in a writing club at school for a while, and we tried to do a couple projects together, but the group got off course way too easily and nothing really got done, so I prefer to be alone with something I’m really passionate about finishing.

6. Have you ever cowritten with someone?

When I was liiiiiike 12, my friend and I co-wrote a lot of Avatar: The Last Airbender fanfic lmao, which to this day is one of my favourite writing memories. And I co-wrote an entire 50k ‘novel’ with my friend during middle school, which was actually pretty good fun - we traded off chapters and worked together on plot and worldbuilding and actually finished the whole thing. It was horrible (I can’t look at it anymore it’s so cringey), but a good experience to have. I’ve co-written with a few friends online too, with mixed results - nothing that’s ever really gone anywhere though.

7. Who do you bounce ideas off of?

No one lmao. I just throw them into the story and see if they work.

8. Have you ever taken an experience from your life and written it into a story?

Definitely! The most obvious example would probably be the series of short stories I’ve written and posted on this horse racing game I play, Flying For Home, which are sometimes drawn directly from stuff that happens around my workplace in real life, seeing as I work with racehorses in a big stable (the premise of the short stories lmao).

Another example I can think of is, funnily enough, my other horse-related project; a novel called Vertigo, for which I have drawn on a lot of my own personal history and people that I’ve met in my life and thrown it into the mixing pot. It’s a bit of a personal daydream tbh xD Other than those, there’s a little bit of myself in everything I write, I think, though it’s hard to pick out sometimes.

9. Favorite type of music to listen to while you write.

I usually don’t let myself listen to music when I write, but if I do, it’ll be the playlist I inevitably have for the story, turned down very quiet so that it fades into the background - usually just pop and alternative/indie sort of stuff.

10. Have you ever had anyone give you “advice” that hurt you and prevented you from writing for a while?

I don’t think I’ve ever had anything that stopped me from writing, and I’ve certainly never had criticism from outsiders/strangers or whatever (generally people just ignore me). But I do keep my mum at a distance from my writing, as she tends to just push and push me to ‘publish something already’ and gives off the mentality of ‘it’s not worth wasting your time on if it won’t make you money’. She uh...doesn’t know that I have published over 100k of fanfic this year. Lol. She’s only trying to be supportive, in her own way, and I appreciate it, but I just don’t mention it to her very often, because she’s never really ready to listen to my point of view on it.

11. Have you ever had fans of your writing pester to write a certain way?

I don’t have fans xD

1. Have you ever had an idea that sounded really great in your head, but when you started writing it, came out terrible for whatever reason?

Yesssss, Flicker has gone through 9 versions in 2 years because every time I start it, it just goes very quickly in directions that I don’t want it to and it never feels right. This version I’m working on now is the first time I’ve really liked all the ways I could go with it so hopefully we’re past book 2 blues and back on track.

2. What’s your favorite part in writing a story? The relationships (or shipping), the plot, the worldbuilding, something else?

The like, ‘main’ scenes, the big hitters. The culmination of all the middle bits into that one main plot point. And relationships too, though not romantic persay - I just really enjoy the scenes where two characters will bounce off of each other for like 7 pages of dialogue, whether its enemies, or friends, or romantic.

3. And weird habits you do when writing, or to keep yourself writing?

I write by hand mostly, and I have my own system to mark as I’m going sentences I don’t like, or words that don’t really fit but I couldn’t think of the right one, or facts I’ve made up on the fly that need to be googled. If I just mark down stuff that I want to change later as I go, I find that I set myself free in a way, and I can just move on without getting stuck on a google spiral (also I don’t forget to fix my plot holes later).

4. Do you keep the internet on or off when you write?

On, though it’s very distracting when I’m trying to write straight on my laptop lmao

5. What books, authors, fics, or any media, have heavily influenced your writing style?

I spent a lot of my childhood reading Enid Blyton and authors like her; older books, mostly my mum’s books from when she was a child, and things from my hometown’s very, very outdated library. So they had a huge impact on the way I learnt to write (they also had an impact on the way I talk too, but that’s another story). More recently, the whole tone and way that fanfic in general is written has really influenced me, and I’d like to think I’ve adopted it and made it my own in a good way.

6. What time is the best time to write? Day, night? Morning, evening?

Evening/night; some days, I cannot focus until like 8pm when I go to bed. And then I lose sleep because I’m writing but y’know. For editing/typing up, that’s a late afternoon kind of job.

7. Is there anyone IRL that you let read your work?

I have a group of friends that I’ve known for 8 years now that are allowed to read my work. We used to rp together and all used to write and so we all know how bad we were back in the day xD. One girl from that group has been my friend since kindergarten, so she has always had me shoving handfuls of words in her face. There’s been a few other friends that have read some of my stuff, but not all of it, and the older I get, the less I share.

8. How do you handle negative or unhelpful reviews or critique? Does it impact the way you write?

I’ve never had any negative response, so I don’t know. The silence when you’re 4 chapters deep and no one has reviewed is deafening though.

9. Do you respond to every comment/reply you get? If not, which ones get your attention and why?

I only respond to the long/sincere ones, because I feel like they deserve some encouragement in return for taking the time to really let me know what they thought.

10. Ever gotten weird, unsolicited messages asking to join an RP group or some such because this person apparently read your writing (but probably didn’t)?

Hah. Once or twice.

11. What is your favorite platform to post your writing, talk about writing, or anything like that?

My favourite place to post and to read by far is AO3 - but I find the best platform to get feedback on is FF.net. My favourite place to talk about writing is over here on tumblr.

Request: you know how Im all hung up over Arranged? May I please request a Yoongi POV of any part you like of the story? as a one shot?

Description: This drabble is entirely linked with the first fanfic I wrote on this account, Arranged. So if you haven’t, I’d highly recommend reading that first before reading this drabble so it makes sense to you! For those of you who are familiar with the story, this occurs after Yoongi and Y/N have met at the music shop! Boring.

That’s the only word Yoongi could use to describe his evening. He sat across from the woman his mother had set him up with, the woman she was hoping he would finally finally accept as his bride. Of course, this woman felt no different from the others. She stared at him through her lashes, the low lighting of the bar casting shadows over the planes of her face, the planes of her chest. She laughed at the things he said that weren’t even funny. She talked about her education, her pedigree. She mentioned Yoongi’s salary, and how it was impressive to her. He felt like an actor who had performed this specific scene so many times he had it memorized by heart. He’d ordered a drink only to abandon it since this particular date seemed very keen on talking, or rather getting him to talk. He sat at the bar, twiddling his thumbs, looking for any reason to call the meeting early and go home to his apartment and his Holly.

And that was when he got a call.

“I-I’m so sorry, Sir! Holly has-,”

“Holly what?” screamed Yoongi into the receiver. Panicked, he grabbed his things and shoved them into his pockets. “Is he okay? Is he sick? What happened?”

“Sir! Please let me finish!” whined his assistant, Jaehee. The young guy had always been a bit of a disappointing assistant, and he was often scattered. He came from an excellent family, and was only given the job because of that. But Yoongi often longed to have someone more qualified fill the role. “He got off the leash.”

“He what?” bellowed Yoongi.

His date stared up at him with a dainty hand on her lips, eyes wide. “What happened?” she asked quietly, placing a hand on his arm.

He jerked it away. “In Gangnam? Where?”

“Right outside your apartment,” he said, though his voice was pitiful and weak.

Yoongi’s heart raced and he turned on his heel to rush out of the bar. “Wait! What’s happening? Is someone in your family in trouble?” asked the girl, trailing behind him.

Yoongi nodded and turned to her. “My dog.”

At this she stilled and her face went slack. “Your…dog…,” she said.

“I’ve gotta go,” he said. “I’ll send you a gift in the mail to apologize.” And with that, he was gone.

It had been an hour of searching his whole neighborhood for his small Min Holly, and Yoongi was beginning to become really panicked. But, luck seemed to be on his side that night. When he spotted his beloved dog, Holly was half a block away from him, sitting obediently beside a girl in a smock, that girl crouching in front of him and examining his collar. Relief washed over him. Not only was he safe, but he seemed to really like that girl. The yellow street light washed over the two of them, just enough for him to see the girl carefully lift Holly off the ground and take him into the convenience store.

Well, what in the hell did she think she was doing with his dog?

He jogged down the sidewalk, frantic to save his Holly from the dog-napper, but as cars rushed by on his side he felt his worry subside just a little. It seemed the girl was just trying to get him off the busy street. His pace slowed, only slightly.

He threw open the door to the convenience store and, panting, called out for someone, anyone, to return his dog to him.

And that was when he’d seen her. The girl from the instrument store. On particularly hard days, Yoongi often made his way to music stores around Seoul, lingering there for hours at a time to settle his mind. Today was no different, except that he’d been pestered by another employee, asking if he wanted help.

No help that you can provide, he’d said to himself, but not to her.

But this girl, she was the one that had left a real impression on him, which was rare. Everything from her posture to her demeanor to her voice and the way she spoke was calm and relaxed, like a comfortable grandmother. Although, to be fair, Yoongi’s own grandmother wasn’t the most comfortable…

This girl, however, was. And when she’d taken him back to see the Steinway, his heart had begun to sing, just a little. That piano…

Then he noticed that Holly was not only sitting and eating well, but he was wagging his tail too. He wasn’t a disobedient dog by any stretch, but he could be a bit shy or slow to trust a stranger. It came as a bit of a shock to see that girl beside Holly, the two of them having made fast friends.

Naturally, Yoongi wanted to allow his Holly time to finish his meal, and didn’t want to rush him, so he came to a seat at the bar by the window, watching him eat fondly. He’d tried to give the girl money for the dog food, but she’d steadfastly refused, even going so far as to pry open her own worn wallet and produce a few small dollars to put into the register. He found himself quietly admiring her. Not in the way in which men admire women, but in the way in which one human admires another. Her hair was askew and messy around her head, restrained in a loose bun at the nape of her neck, her eyes slightly wild, and her smock was ill-fitting around her waist, a garish shade of bright yellow. He’d noticed it before at the store, but she seemed very sure-footed, very certain as she talked and sat and thought. It had unnerved him quite a bit when that strange girl had bowed her head and accepted a punishment she didn’t deserve for his sake. There had to be a reason why her eyes had gone glassy at her boss’s scolding, why she looked so terrified. How could a girl who seemed to possess about her an air of quiet, calm determination so easily crumble at the feet of someone above her? The image stuck with him throughout the day.

He’d found himself speaking a great deal more than he normally would, and the way that girl had just thoughtfully listened made him more bold. She was certainly something different, and after the hundreds of disastrous marriage meetings he’d had over the past year, it was reassuring to him to know that at least there were women in the world who weren’t after his money, weren’t so predictably boring and predictably perfect. He liked the loose hairs that hung around her face, he liked her wild eyes, and he even liked that horrible smock. Those things just proved to him that she was a real human.

“It’s good though, don’t you think?” she’d asked after he had explained about his horrible meeting. “You should marry someone whose lifestyle is compatible with your own. If she couldn’t accept the part of your life that belongs to Holly, then maybe it’s for the best that things didn’t go well.”

He thought for a good long moment about this, then took a glance down at the girl and was struck, once again, by how effortlessly she sat beside him, how her eyes were trained on Holly and not on him, how she seemed to barely even mind that he was there at all. He found it easy to sit beside her, whether they were talking or existing in a peaceful and total silence. He’d noticed it at the instrument store too, this feeling. She was an unpretentious person, someone who was too scared to play a nice piano because she didn’t think her skills matched the instrument. He’d found that somehow charming, that doubt. Because if she hadn’t mentioned it, he never would have guessed that she had any insecurities at all. She seemed like the kind of person he would like to spend time with. The kind of person he would like to have as a friend.

And perhaps that was why, when she rushed to save Holly from cutting his tongue and instead cut herself, an idea came rushing to him very suddenly and recklessly. If he couldn’t find someone he matched well with from his family’s picks, then perhaps he could pick his own. Truthfully, he’d never met someone with whom he could so easily connect like he did with this stranger. If the circumstances were different, and oh how he wished they were, maybe he would have asked her to go on walks with him and Holly, maybe they would get to know each other slowly, maybe they could become real friends.

But the circumstances weren’t different.

So, when he offered to help the girl and, resolutely, she’d replied that she could, “handle it herself”, that crazy thought bloomed into a full-blown idea, and that idea nestled into his brain. The more he thought about it, the more perfect it seemed. Marry a penniless stranger, gain positive media attention, raise her from poverty and set her up with a secure future, and then divorce in two years so she can live the rest of her life freely. That would sate his mother and father for the time being, get his neck and his place in the company off the line, ease tensions in the family, and help this girl in the process. Of all the things that contributed to this horribly strange idea, he found the prospect of helping the girl to be the most appealing. The way she’d shaken as she stood bowed before her boss proved to Yoongi just how badly this girl needed money. He didn’t want to exploit her, but rather to give her a hand. A kind, genuine person like her had to deserve some help.

For the small price of her hand in marriage…

He almost didn’t say it. Instead he’d voiced his thoughts in a different way, telling the girl how she’d somehow managed to be involved in the two things that meant to most to him: Music and Holly.

The thing that tipped him over the edge was when she’d exhaled slowly and, while petting Holly’s small head, gently said, “Well, I think both of those things are very worthy things to care about.”

She was right. Someone who couldn't accept where Yoongi’s priorities lied in his life was not a good match for him after all. Someone who couldn’t understand him, and understand the particular way in which he liked to live would only make Yoongi miserable.

But here was someone who met his qualifications. She was kind, calm, reliable, and Min Holly really liked her.

So he took the leap that he knew might change his life, and he did it blindly but with all the certainty in the world.

“Wanna marry me?”

Hallie trot is 19 years old, but looks to be about 16. She has a twin brother who looks at least 21, but ironically she is the older twin. In the original universe they come from, after a (radioactive? toxic waste? I don't quite recall) disaster, many of the residents of this town gained powers THROUGH DANCE. Hallie and Horatio were born after this disaster, but received the powers of ~*time*~. Hallies works similarly to Quicksilver, in that it looks like she has super speed, but she actually is slowing time around her (she can speed it up too but how useful is that besides for long, boring conversations?) After an horrific accident trying to protect her brother, she had been outcasted and joined the towns group of bandit(o)s. Incredibly sweet and kind, constantly pulling out whatever you need from her seemingly magical bag (how does it all fit in there? Ramona Flowers, is that you?). Her specialty, like many Banditos, is to make deliveries no matter who they’re from/for, or what they are.

BORDERLANDS AU:

Time frame: has no knowledge about any events occurring after she left, such as Jack’s death, or the fall of Hyperion.

Hallie’s parents met on Artemis, her mother’s home planet, and whether they fell in love or it was out of them both being from high standing, they got together and moved to Demophon, her father’s home planet and had twins. He worked closely with Hyperion, having a sort of high position there that Hallie never understood, and so Hallie and her twin Horatio were sent to Opportunity. Hallie quickly grew to hate it there, hate everything about Hyperion and Handsome Jack, seeing through the bullshit, and in a grand heist, stole nearly 12 million smack-a-roon-ees (exact amount unknown, though a quick estimate gives $10 million in cash and $1.5 million in tech and weaponry), along with some guns and Hyperion technology. She is obviously a wanted criminal, traveling across Pandora dodging the Hyperion goons they send after her. She carries a Lady First pistol, Interfacer shotgun, and Fremington’s Edge sniper rifle, (as of 08/03/18 enhanced accuracy and elementals added tobedecidedlaterwheniweightheprosandconsshhhhhh) though she mainly uses the pistol, keeping the Interfacer as an intimidation factor mostly, and Fremington to scope (GET IT) out what’s ahead of her. She rides around on a motorbike. She’s dedicated to helping Pandorans in need, often doing work for free and actually giving money away. It’s a mystery how much of the money she actually has left, but it seems that after her recent surfacing after hiding for so long she’s doing her best to just get rid of it. She has no interest in the cash she stole, besides improving life on Pandora for everyone. She’s happy living in a broken down shack, so long as she can make others happy.

These go for Hallie in general but I typed them out as Borderlands specific just because that’s the only RP-verse I’ve been in with her so far so why not elaborate in detail?

Big Eater: Self-explanatory, I don’t even feel the need to put a TV Trope quote here. Hallie can eat A LOT. It makes a lot more sense in her original verse but she does do a a lot of physical labor for a 19-year-old girl. She clearly manages to work it off at 5′7″ and 122 lbs.

Cute and Psycho: I feel like psycho is a little extreme but Hallie can go from adorable and sweet to vaguely threatening if the situation takes a turn. Her kindness is no act, and she is still fairly naive, but she’s not nearly as stupid as she sometimes acts, and is willing to defend herself if need be.

Deliberately Cute Child: “This is a kid who has all the stereotypically adorable childlike mannerisms: ..Puppy-Dog Eyes, and so on. Really, though, they're just faking it all; they've figured out it's a good way to get what they want. Sometimes characters like this are Really 700 Years Old... [Hallie is 19!!!] On the other hand, they might just be kids who've figured out their elders' emotional cheat codes.” -TV Tropes. I mean, Hallie is still pretty young and child-like, so it can go both ways.

False Innocence Trick: I probably am not using this completely right, but Hallie’s go-to. While good-hearted, she often pretends to be much more innocent than she actually is in hopes others underestimate her, and to gain sympathy. Even Hallie herself has a bit of a hard time knowing the line between the act and her true self sometimes. Will rework this one later

Killer Rabbit: As young and cute as she looks, if you try attacking her, she WILL fight back as mentioned above. She tells everyone she knows nothing about guns but the year she spent hidden she sure learned an awful lot. May or may not have prior knowledge/training in pistols on Helios, unclear. She’s no sharpshooter but I wouldn’t recommend taking your chances, she had to have taken out the Hyperion goons sent after her somehow, am I right? Will also rework this one later

Little Miss Con Artist: Played straight, see the above tropes (besides Big Eater lol). She’ll bump into you with an “Oops, sorry, I’m such a klutz!” and when you check for your wallet later, it’s gone. “Aww, look at sweet little Sally. So adorable, so innocent......wait, where's my wallet? This is when a little girl takes advantage of the perception that Children Are Innocent to play a bunch of adults for suckers. Sometimes this character will work in partnership with an adult, usually her father, but as often as not she's the real brains of the outfit.” - TV Tropes

Manic Pixie Dream Girl: “She's stunningly attractive, Energetic, high on life, full of wacky quirks and idiosyncrasies (generally including childlike playfulness)” -TV Tropes. I understand how complicated this term is so I’m going to do my best job to explain this simply: I would not necessarily call Hallie a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. but she has the personality, traits, and quirks of one. Her goal in life is to simply enjoy it, and allow others to enjoy it with her. She is not and has not been in a relationship, but is open to one. I’m even okay if it starts as a typical MPDG relationship SO LONG as it develops into something more/deeper.

Mysterious Past: “Often a Former Teen Rebel's old rebellion will be part of their mysterious past. Any dark deeds done in this period are part of a Dark and Troubled Past.” -TV Tropes. Just read the above About please don’t make me type the same stuff over and over again. Born on Helios, hated what Hyperion stood for so she left but not before taking some of their shit.

Older Than They Look: “Sometimes characters don't look their age. Whether it was a deliberate artistic choice on the behalf of the creator (usually to make the character more attractive or to legally fulfill a fetish) or something much deeper and linked to their characterization and the plot, this character will be older than they look.” -TV Tropes. Looks about 16, is 19.

Sweet Tooth: About as self-explanatory as Big Eater. Hallie’s favorite foods include suckers, which she always carries on her, and breakfast foods.

The Fake Cutie: Not really though. Not necessarily totally fake, but she plays it ‘Up to 11′ if we’re gonna keep using Trope Terms. Plays up her youthful appearance, through you typically won’t find her in childish clothing. “This cutie act is actually camouflage to hide her intelligence, [or] her true self... Sometimes she knows full well how shaken up her behavior makes her foes, and takes great joy in seeing them squirm. She tends to be very manipulative...” -TV Tropes. Will rework this later

Bretagne in winter.

By virtue of unexpected circumstances in the end of January I visited Bretagne (Brittany) in France. It was slightly warmer there than in Saint-Petersburg, where I was having a hard time with my fractured foot (which I got in South Africa a bit earlier) moving around the city’s icy streets on crutches. Breton winter rains were not that cold after all.

I spent more than a month in the town of Auray near the Golf of Morbihan, discovering the surroundings on sunny (and rainy) days and to the extent of my abilities. During five weeks my friend (native Breton) was showing me around and took me to lots of interesting places in the area. It will be hard to describe absolutely everything we saw, but I’m going to try to mention most of it and write a bit more about places that I particularly enjoyed.

Parts of Bretagne reminded me of that France which I know from black and white movies of the 60-s. At least winter Bretagne without herds of tourists seemed to be quite authentic. I felt almost home there. Instead of snow in Bretagne there is sea foam after strong ocean storms. Local people reminded me of my compatriots from Saint-Petersburg: they seemed to have same seriousness in their faces. It’s a bit sunnier in Bretagne than back home in Petersburg, although rains are very frequent and can persist for a week non stop. When it’s sunny everything around is almost too beautiful! Grey days are necessary to have in order to fully appreciate and enjoy the sun (even if it comes out only for a minute). In this article I’m sharing photos that were mostly taken on sunny days (just because I like bright colours) and on the coast (because of local peculiarity: it’s a lot sunnier by the ocean, and inland it’s grey and cloudy). I have to admit that choosing 19 photos from more than 400 was rather difficult. Yes, Bretagne definitely inspired me. In five weeks I lived a whole little life over there. I have always liked Europe (away from its big cities and touristy beaches), but I never knew what to say about it, that hasn’t been said yet. In fact now I’m not writing anything new about Bretagne, but rather sharing my impressions about this French province that I have enjoyed so much. Please do not consider this post informative.

Bretagne fascinates with its beautiful scenery: blue sky and lush green grass, leaning ancient churches, castles from fairy tales and mysterious family manors, stone houses, that are centuries old… Some details are: soft green moss on the stones, cobbled narrow streets, white lace curtains and sailboat models on windowsills in the houses and in the churches (there they have a special place – they are hanging from the ceiling).

The town of Auray in the south of Bretagne, where I have spent most of the time, stands on the river with the same name, which flows into the Golf of Morbihan. It’s a nice little town with a beautiful old port – Saint-Goustan, where I kept returning to take pictures in different weather and various times of the day (for the best sunlight). There are lots of amazing places around Auray, both on the coast and inland. I don’t think I can remember the names of all little chapels that we dropped in and the direction of all narrow winding side roads that we drove on. Right next to Auray there is a coastal town called Trinite-sur-Mer with huge marina and lots of yachts. On the way there we stopped on some beach near Saint-Philibert. Beaches in this part of France are deserted in the winter, which certainly was pleasing to the eyes (I have no idea yet how it all looks in the summer season). Especially I enjoyed a wide stretch of sand backed by dunes called Plage de Kerhillio near Erdeven. On a sunny day we visited the famous Carnac, where there is an enormous concentration of megaliths (4 thousand rocks). And when meteorologists promised a big storm we went to watch it on the peninsula of Quiberon. This was indeed something! Roaring waves crashing against high rocks, black clouds and lots of sea foam. Beach was covered in sea foam as if it was snow, and blowing wind was lifting it up and whirling around. I never saw anything like that before! Local Bretons with their kids in rubber boots and shaggy dogs also came over to watch the storm (it must have been the weekend). Around Quiberon and actually all along the coast in the area there are lots of beautiful mansions; most of them are closed for the winter, and in the summer Parisian owners come to spend their holidays over there. It’s a pity that all those houses are sold out to vacationers and are empty most of the time; it would be much better if locals would inhabit them year round and in the winter fireplaces would be crackling… Bretagne (Breizh in local language) is populated by people with character, who would gladly separate themselves from the rest of France with its problems (but it’s already a whole different story).

It’s great when you manage to be in the right place at the right time. For example, on one of the days we happened to be by the bridge over to Saint-Cado islet some minutes before the sunset. In front there were black rain clouds, and setting sun was lighting up the islet, the stone bridge that connects it to the mainland and the little house standing separately on the rock in the water (which was used in the past for breeding oysters). The view was stunning and the moment was perfect! Later I came back to that place a couple more times to take photos at sunset; it’s near Belz on the river Etel.

Not everything in southern Bretagne boasts the same beauty… And some places I had to visit for different reasons, other than taking pictures. The town of Lorient, which had been bombed to ashes by the Americans during the Second World War, unfortunately, wasn’t rebuilt beautifully… The highlight for me over there was the visit of Cite de la Voile Eric Tabarly where I saw the legendary Pen Duick-3 (one of the sailboats of the famous navigator). As a matter of fact we came to Lorient several times, because there, in it’s big hospital I finally got cured from the unknown African parasite which I brought in my stomach… I’m very happy about French medicine and thanking it now! I was not asked for any documentation, insurances or prepayment. There people were thinking first how to help and the question of payment seemed secondary. Charges were actually more than adequate. Just an example: 1.5 hour specialist’s consultation cost me 23 euro – this is a standard price for everyone, independent of citizenship. Something to think about.

Let’s change the topic… Now I’d like to write about food. I’m not going to list all the delights of French cuisine here, but will allow myself to say a couple words about Breton delicacies. Will start with… deserts! Sweets in Bretagne are all a bit salty… This province is famous for its salted butter, and they cook everything on it, including deserts. One of the main additions to sweets is caramel made with that same salted butter (caramel au beurre salé). Also there is a very heavy and filling layered butter cake (or something like it) called Kouign-amann. I don’t have to eat for a whole day after having one. Another lighter desert (which I now proudly bake regularly) is Far Breton (with prunes preferably soaked in rum). Bretagne is famous for its crepes from buckwheat flour (galettes de blé noir). Although French don’t eat buckwheat itself (at least it’s not a popular side dish there as it is in Russia). Bretons drink hearty apple cider with distinct taste and use those classic looking cups that I would drink my tea from. Also they have real kefir up there (lait ribot)! And now let’s talk about the most pleasant stuff – seafood. Bretagne has a vast variety of it. You can try it in a restaurant, buy it on any fish market or just put on your rubber boots, arm yourself with a bucket and a little shovel and go out to the beach in a low tide and pick up some delicacies for dinner. Oysters, clams, mussels, spider crabs, cuttlefish, rays – all of those I had a chance to try out, cook at home and even pick up myself at a low tide (Palourdes, to be exact)! The tastiest in my opinion are scallops Coquilles Saint-Jacques.

Back to Breton sights. The town of Vannes on a sunny day is another great place to visit: old city behind the walls looks like one big museum. Not too far from Gulf of Morbihan (just on the other side) there is a castle Сhâteau de Suscinio, which was open to public in February (most castles and manors are closed for the winter). This chateau looks much nicer from the outside, but it’s cold and empty inside. As I have already mentioned it’s usually sunnier on the coast, and as soon as you go inland it becomes cloudy and grey. In this article I do not post photos that were taken on our day trips inland, but I think it’s necessary to write about the places we went to over there. Just north east from Gulf of Morbihan there is a little cosy castle in the forest - Сhâteau de Trédion. Perhaps it was the castle that I liked the most in Bretagne. It’s located in a very picturesque and quiet place, next to the river and forest, and with no big roads near by. As far as I understood this chateau is inhabited and can’t be visited (it’s not a museum); in high season it’s partially rented out to luxury vacationers or weddings and its garden is open to visitors. We did not stop after seeing just two castles, of course, and continued driving inland in search of more adventures. We also passed by Сhâteau de Josselin and Сhâteau des Rohan in Pontivy (unfortunately both of them were closed for the winter). On one of the days we visited the famous village of Rochfort-en-Terre (not that long ago it was voted as the most scenic village in France). The day we went there was rather dull (dark grey and rainy), but the place is undeniably beautiful no matter what the weather is like. Everything in that village looks like in an old movie, and of course there is a little castle up on the hill (just as I imagined).

North west from the Gulf of Morbihan there is the department of Finistère. We drove around its southern part. The first town we stopped in was Pont-Aven. I have to admit that I was excited to visit it mostly because of the great movie that we had watched earlier, called “Les galettes de Pont-Aven” (1975). Those who enjoy 1970-s cinema would definitely appreciate this film. We went around the town and found (as it seemed to us) the places where the movie was filmed, and of course we tasted the famous cookies (the best were the ones made from buckwheat flour). Then we headed to Concarneau and for whatever reason I didn’t really like the place that much. The old town seemed a bit like a walled tourist park, something wasn’t right about it, not real (maybe it’s a good idea to come back there one day and give it another chance). The department’s capital – Quimper – on the contrary is an interesting town, with a bit of a different feel. Architecture of its old town, enormous Cathédrale St. Corentin and authentic (non touristic) liveliness of its streets stayed in my memory. In the fish market over there we got two fresh rays and sautéed them with capers, lemon and butter at home in the evening.

Adding a little bonus to Bretagne we also drove to see famous Mont Saint-Michel which is actually situated in Normandy. The road trip was interesting, but the day we picked was probably the coldest that could possibly happen in France. Strong wind was blowing, it was raining periodically, we did not expect to see any sun and the temperature was maybe just slightly above zero. And even in this kind of weather (and in February) there were still tons of tourists visiting Mont Saint-Michel. I liked the legendary fortress-island better from the outside (and from a distance). We also had some organizational inconveniences over there. Everybody has to park about 2.5 km away from the island and then ride a bus or walk over there (walking must be great in the summer) partially on a really long bridge open to all Norman winds. There were very few buses available for crowds of tourists, so we had to freeze a bit during our walk back to the car (it was my first long and serious walk without crutches and air-cast boot). So we got to see Mont Saint-Michel from all possible angles and distances. We drove home via the scenic towns of Cancale and Dinard (famous for their oysters and pretty immodest mansions along the coast). We also stopped for a day in Saint-Malo which, just like Lorient, was bombed to nothing during the Second World War, but was rebuilt nicely.

Lets once again come back to southern Bretagne, now to the actual Gulf of Morbihan. It consists of approximately 40 islands and islets, and some of them are inhabited. We took a boat to Île-aux-Moines. It’s just 10 minutes away, but once over there it seems that you are far from civilization. Atmosphere was relaxing in February: empty winding streets with old houses and a few local folks drinking their day away in a bar on a little plaza (in the summer there must be lots of tourists!). There are no cars on the island, people walk everywhere or ride bikes with small carts attached to them. This island is perfect for walking, there is a long scenic path winding along the coast. We had a lovely day there: sky was free of clouds, warm sun was reflecting in the still waters of the gulf, incredibly colourful and lush mimosas were blossoming everywhere and smelling of spring. I really wanted to stay there overnight, in peace and calm.
