What Are The Key Drivers Behind China's Expanding Influence In Africa?
Tumblr media
China's influence in Africa has grown significantly over the past few decades, making it a crucial player in the continent's economic and political landscape.
This expansion of Chinese influence raises questions about the motivations and drivers behind Beijing's engagement with African nations. In this blog post, we will explore the key factors driving China's expanding influence in Africa, shedding light on the dynamics of this complex relationship.
Economic Interests
At the core of China's engagement with Africa lies its economic interests. China views Africa as a vast market for its goods and services, a source of raw materials, and a destination for its investments. Africa is rich in natural resources such as oil, minerals, and agricultural products, which are vital for China's growing economy. African markets provide opportunities for Chinese companies to expand their reach and generate profits.
Infrastructure Development
China has heavily invested in infrastructure projects across Africa, including building roads, railways, ports, and telecommunication networks. These projects not only facilitate the transportation of goods and resources but also stimulate economic growth in the host countries. Improved infrastructure benefits both China's trade and the African economies.
Diplomacy And Soft Power
China's diplomacy in Africa is characterized by its non-interference policy in domestic affairs, a sharp contrast to the historical baggage of Western colonialism. This approach resonates with African leaders and governments, who appreciate China's respect for sovereignty. Furthermore, China has extended soft power through initiatives such as the Confucius Institutes, cultural exchanges, and scholarships, promoting a positive image of China in African societies.
Resource Acquisition
China's demand for natural resources has driven it to secure access to African commodities. Through a combination of trade agreements and investments in resource-rich countries, China ensures a steady supply of key resources, including oil from Angola and Nigeria, copper from Zambia, and minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Belt And Road Initiative (BRI)
Africa plays a vital role in China's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative. The BRI aims to enhance connectivity between China and other regions of the world, and many African countries are strategically located along the proposed BRI routes. Chinese investments in African infrastructure contribute to the success of this global project.
Market Expansion
China's global economic strategy involves diversifying its markets and reducing reliance on the Western world. African countries offer a growing middle-class consumer base, making it an attractive destination for Chinese goods and investments. By expanding its market presence in Africa, China can reduce its vulnerability to economic downturns in other regions.
Political Alliances
China has strategically cultivated political alliances with African nations. Through aid, development projects, and diplomatic support, China has garnered favor with various African governments. This has allowed Beijing to secure valuable contracts, access to resources, and political backing on international platforms.
Investment In Human Capital
China has invested in human capital development in Africa by providing scholarships, training programs, and technical assistance. This investment creates goodwill among African professionals, fostering lasting ties and strengthening China's presence on the continent.
Conclusion
China's expanding influence in Africa is driven by a complex interplay of economic, political, and strategic interests. While China's engagement offers opportunities for African development, it also raises concerns about debt sustainability, environmental impacts, and potential loss of sovereignty. African countries must carefully navigate these relationships to maximize the benefits while mitigating the risks. China's role in Africa is likely to continue evolving, shaping the continent's future in profound ways and reinforcing its status as a global economic powerhouse.

India Introduces Connectivity Project Between New Delhi and the Middle East to Curb China Influence
Tumblr media
India Introduces Connectivity Project between New Delhi and the Middle East to Curb China’s Influence in the Gulf
India is preparing to undertake a vital connectivity project to link New Delhi to the Middle East. The country could have initiated the project to combat the growing influence of China in the Gulf areas. The idea of launching a connectivity project that links India to Middle Eastern nations through seaports, rails, and roads happened after the I2U2 group meeting. The group comprises Israel and its member states as well.
Ajit Doval, National Security Adviser of India in the meeting communicated with his counterparts from UAE and US, as well as Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi Crown Prince.  The leaders spoke about rail networks and joint infrastructure projects to connect different countries of the Middle East. Abraham Accords is a Trump-era agreement and I2U2 is a result of it.
The agreement helped in normalizing relations between several Arab countries and Israel, which also made it permissible for the existence of the I2U2 group. As for India, it is supposedly a major power in Asian terrain and has a good record of being an infrastructure provider. The nation has the largest rail system in the world in Asia. India also assists with sharing arrangements for cross-border electricity.
If we consider Saudi Arabia, it is not integrated into the I2U2 group for having no formal relations with Israel. But with the Saudi Crown Prince’s presence, India may participate in waning the influence of China in the Middle East with the connectivity project. Millions of Indians work in the Middle East and send remittances home. The region is also essential for trade interests and thus, becoming crucial for India to focus on it.
Also, China’s BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) investment and the latest strategic agreement with Iran are reasons why India wants to dim the growing influence of its neighbor in the Middle East. Recently, China also facilitated a reconciliation deal between Saudi Arabia and Iran. For India, the benefit lies at both sea and land trade pathways that cover Israel and the United Arab Emirates to Piraeus harbor in Greece, going into Europe.

China and Italy sign trade agreements and memorandum of understanding on technology, energy, and tourism

China and Italy sign trade agreements and memorandum of understanding on technology, energy, and tourism
Tumblr media
After meeting the Italian president Sergio Mattarella yesterday, Xi Jinping will sign today with the president of the council Giuseppe Conte 29 agreements for a value between 5 and 7 billion.
Then, Xi Jinping will travel to Sicily for the final part of his visit to Italy.
The Memorandum of Understanding that will be signed this morning will sanction the adhesion of Italy, first among the G7 countries, to the “Belt and Road Initiative” or the “New Silk Road”, the new Chinese global infrastructure project.
Last night Mattarella received with all the honors the Chinese president accompanied by 150 officials, businessmen, and journalists.
Mattarella remarked how the Italian-Chinese agreement will take place “in the context of the strategy outlined by the European Union” and underlined the problem of respect for human rights.
Sergio Mattarella thus had to ease the tensions of recent weeks triggered by Xi’s visit to Italy, on the American side a and European.
Matteo Salvini, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister, said that “China is not a free market”, but added that he is still happy with the Chinese visit, and with the signed economic agreements.
The list of agreements originally signed it had to cover 50 points, but the controversies of the last few days have reduced the number to 29.
In particular, there has been a slowdown as regards the telecommunications sector, after the Huawei scandal.
Among the agreements provided, there is also the possibility of playing a Serie A soccer match in China.
Conte said that Italy signed the agreements for purely commercial reasons, trying to recalibrate the trade balance with China which sees an Italian deficit close to 18 billion.
France and Germany, despite weaving even more important trade relations with China, have not signed the agreement.
The agreements are still subject to maximum confidentiality.
Some still seem rather generic, while others are more detailed.
We only know that they concern some strategic sectors for Italy, such as transport, energy, steel plants, shipyards, and credit.
According to the Italian business newspaper Il Sole 24ore, the picture is broad: it goes from understandings with Unicredit, Intesa Sanpaolo, and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, to the naval sector with Fincantieri, up to the energy sector that will involve Ansaldo, Snam, Italgas, Terna, Enel, and Eni.
According to the local press, the Danieli of Buttro (Udine ) will enter into a Chinese partnership for the construction of a steel plant in Azerbaijan.
Eni will sign an agreement with Bank of China to “strengthen collaboration on various financial instruments”.
The 5g is not part of the agreement.
As regards the agreement with Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, it provides for the preparation of the Panda Bonds, bonds that aim to collect capital from Chinese institutional investors to finance Italian companies operating in China.
Ansaldo Energia, one of the world’s largest producers of power plants, will receive a contract from Shanghai Electric, already a 40% shareholder of Ansaldo.
Three agreements concern Chinese tourism in Italy, signed with Aeroporti di Roma, Trenitalia and Musei Ferrari.
Chinese tourists in Italy reached two million in 2018.
According to Sun Jie, Ctrip’s CEO, a simplification of visa procedures, more flights, and increased tourist safety would help the sector grow.

China’s Belt & Road Initiative: economic prosperity or hegemony?
Tumblr media
By James Harvey The Chinese economic and trade initiative, the Belt and Road Initiative(BRI), is billed as a global initiative and development strategy launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping to invest enormous amounts of capital in infrastructure improvements in Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, Europe, and the Maritime counterparts. Economic Prosperity: Chinese President Xi Jinping backs this plan and there are no set term limits on Xi or the BRI.  There is no clear definition of what constitutes a BRI country or project. Everything from a Trump-affiliated theme park in Indonesia to a jazz camp in Chongqing have been branded Belt and Road. Any project anywhere can evidently become part of the BRI To this point, the initiative has spilled over the stated claims to bridge Asia and Europe economics and trade, to the point where there are over 60 infrastructure and other projects in action or planned in the 71 included countries, to date.  Recently, the Republic of Panama has entered into the BRI orbit as a Chinese-built deepwater megaport project  ($1Bn) in the port city of Colon was announced. The same consortium will build a new bridge($1.42Bn) over the Panama Canal. The goal is the building of Chinese dominance on the world economic stage and military parity with the United States. The Belt and Road Initiative is estimated to cost more than $1tn (£760bn), although the estimates differ as to how much money has been spent to date. Read the full article
