Why Study the Martial Arts?
Last week I asked the Budoblr Community this question. For myself, I study the martial arts to learn more about myself. To be challenged in ways not easily found outside of the martial arts. After thirty years, it still feels exciting to get onto the mat. Thank you all for answering.
Here are the answers-
@garudasdojo
Because I hate soccer...
@randomoverwatt
Because aikido trains me to react to stress with something other than blind panic or rote action - a calm and effective (yet flexible) response with genuine concern for the attacker. Unless the attacker has a pal behind you, in which case, don’t pin after kote gaeshi, kick them in the head and turn around. It’s also fun, like riding an organ
@fightlife527
To express myself, take care of those around me, and improve at my passion
@thestickchick
Because it sure beats picking up and putting down heavy objects, or running in place. It engages the mind and the body and it’s so damn fun.
@tubeztheone
To be able to protect myself and the people I care about. Also, just for me.
@infinite-tsukoyomi
i am an artist and with my art i create things; i will never look for a fight but i always defend my sense of justice
@shinchido
Because it’s fun.That’s the only reason I ever started and it’s still the only reason I am a practitioner. Sure, all of the above apply to me as well, really all of them. But those are all extra’s I was rewarded with.If martial arts ever become a reason of sadness and stress, I will quit. But so far, so good :)
@girlinkarate
It’s part of who I am as a person and it helped me get through some tough times 😊 most importantly, I love martial arts 💜
@mandywondering
I’m not naturally athletic, strong, fit, confident… I’m naturally an easy target as my sch ool years will attest. I’m not a victim now…
@wendigorunner
Ya’ll are so serious. I was attracted to it as a kid. Drawn to it in fact, but we didn’t have the money for me to attend classes. These days I have some money, so I train. In a way I guess you could say I kind of have to. I’m super lazy, yet at the same time I’m drawn to such a physical activity.
@knittin4kicks
To build my own identity
@mma-bjj-love
Because nobody is allowed to touch me without my permission. Never again.
@mudshark-experience
To prove to myself and others that hard work and dedication are worth more than talent
@thatlightsaberlesbian
Because neither athleticism nor bravery come naturally to me, and I’ve grown more as a person doing something that’s hard for me than ever doing something that comes easy.
@manwithoutborders
To learn how to defeat the demons inside.
@neko-shogun3
it helps me to keep in balance, both with mind and body.And my master actually teaches me more things than all the teachers combine in my school...
@thejourneytoblackbelt
I was molested as a child and NEVER want to be that weak and helpless again
@alex-a23
To Be Better
@dontworryjustsleep
I wanted to be a warrior like Xena the warrior princess and stand up to the bullies.
@defenseandthedarkarts
to feel connected to my body and stop being afraid of touch (i was never molested, at least not that i’m aware of but as a nb person i always felt somewhat of a disconnect from my body and felt weird being touched and or really close to people), to gain some confidence and discipline but that was why i joined aikido, i stayed because of the feeling you get when you finally get something right, the calmness that comes after some time of training and just the flow of being even if you didn’t get it right yet
@theonlythephil
Because being choked by your best friends is the best way to bond. And it’s just so darn good for your body to just move around!
@taekwondohyeah
It is fun, I found lots of great friends doing it, it keeps me sane in a sense that I don’t feel as prone to depression as much as I did before, it shows me how much I can grow to become a better person and the growth I have already made. For me it’s not as much about the fighting aspect but more about the mental aspect. You can do anything you put your mind to
@storm-shadow14
Because without the resolve and willpower it’s given me, I would likely have tried to kill myself.
@bestsacademy
It’s something I started as a tribute to my father. He always wanted to do it with me before he died, but we couldn’t financially/injures he sustained earlier in life wouldn’t allow him. After he passed, and I found the money to, I began classes as a kind of tribute to him, but shortly after, fell in love with martial arts myself. It really helped shape me into who I am. It helped me realize that anything is attainable, even though it may not be easy.
@fit-like-korra
To protect the people I care about, to be stronger than I ever was. I appreciate the mental fortitude it brings, as well as the confidence.
