Happy memories=Season 5: Addendum & Will foreshadowing
I already altered my previous post (link down below) a bit - I overlooked something: Lucas.

Time jump (correction)
Lucas telling Max that he's there, right in front of her, and she's kind of ignoring him is foreshadowing the scene they shot with Sadie and Caleb: Max in coma, "ignoring" Lucas who tells her that he's there. "I don't want a letter. I'm right here."
It's either that or the scene in S4 in which he reads the book. And the sequence includes Season 4.

The "I'm right here" scene in the memory corresponds with Lucas sitting at Max's bedside (but she is looking just like Sleeping Beauty because she's not in cast and Ross saying that she's in a coma - which means in this scene),and her "ignoring" him. It's possible that this is this scene. It's also possible that it refers to S4. - His watch shows Thursday 11 2 (!), so November 2nd and that's 1989.
Next is Max swallowing the red Skittle (You were wearing that yellow Benny's Burgers t-shirt and it was so big it almost swallowed you whole - like a Pac-Man swallowing the red ghost in the scene, red jacket Max enters the Arcade.), then El and Max link and we hit the time barrier...

Note how in the memory scene they cut the original moment before the linking and after the linking - that's a time jump in itself:
Season 3 mall scene = time jump in Back to the Future. (JC Penney - they used the brands without getting money for it, it's not because they want to make commercials but used them for specific reasons like KitKat, Skittles, M&Ms) The linking/vanishing and reappearing part isn't in it.
The original version is cut in three segments (not sure about the exact terminology here, so I better leave that out, in German which differ from English terminology its probably: halbnah, Totale, nah). If you see the original footage as a single sequence, the edited memory version is visually a temporal jump.
Here again the comparison between this scene (without the final shot) and Back to the Future:

So this is the time jump - it's the third element in the memory sequence (and those are completely out of chronological order) and my guess is, that there are like two jumps potentially. - There's also some contradicting Infos about the time jump, like some say "immediate" time jump but other sources say from Episode 1 to 2. It's still possible that there are multiple time jumps and the hand holding scene IS right before waking up.
(Caleb is wearing a jacket in the bts shot and we don't see what he's wearing under it but in the hand shot he's definitely in role.)
The Back to the Future time jump reference in the memory is happening right after the "I'm right here/Lucas at Max's bedside" scene - however these moments are probably much closer than I initially thought.
And these segments of Lucas touching Max, the red Skittle are connected and the BttF time jump sequence may show us the result of this.
My guess is that there's at least one scene, maybe more, before the actual jump, involving Max (that has not been filmed yet - it would need summer weather) and we get to see already a partial resolve of the jump with Lucas holding Max's hand. Still comatose but a coma is only important if and how someone wakes up.
The coma is a "time jump"
"I'm right here" is either Season 4 ending or the scene from S5. Thinking about it, both would make sense. The first one even a bit more if we think of the coma as the actual starting point for the memory sequence to foreshadow everything the follows after.

Falling in coma, swallowing the red Skittle, time jump sequence and the rest is the boys who meet the killer, the ghost trap scene, ElMax foto session, fotos (in media metaphorically) freeze people in time like:

(There are some Whovians out there that say, that some Doctor Who is also in Stranger Things. And those stasis cubes are visualized as paintings. - An endless summer skateboarding sounds very much like a stasis cube or a pocket dimension. )
.. the movie date (storytelling technique called promise gets it's payoff) ElMax hugging...ElMax & Lumax Endgames.
And they could only use existing scenes but those are very deliberately chosen (there's a scene not in this sequence that has it's own rhyme and I only just discovered it but it demands another moment like it, it involves ElMax, certain posters but most importantly: a sea shell lamp).
And it's been foreshadowed how we would react to the time jump that the JC Penney reference alludes to - I didn't make it up, the Duffers made this connection in the show by showing us the exact moment including Doc saying "The temporal displacement occurred at 1:20 am"

Yepp...these two idiots. That's us.
Conclusion?
The coma is a time jump. "I didn't disintegrate anything. The molecular structure of both Einstein and the car are completely intact. I sent him into the future.", Doc Brown.
In the memory scene, except the "coma" segment as a starting point and the Endgame (It's you and me won't be unhappy), the answer to EVERY memory sequence is ElMax, shown as inseparable after linking. That's neither queerbaiting nor is it just a "regular" relationship. This is not even slightly one of these stories.
Nonetheless is gives us some basic elements of the plot.

And it's ElMax making Lumax Endgame possible: High five. 1st place. Winners....whatever you want to call it.
Soo... The sequence foreshadows some basic elements of Season 5 in regards to the character relationships. - And ElMax appears like inseparable in these moments, either linked, very close by, hugging ...

It doesn't get more obvious. They tell it straight into our faces.
And I would say that it's obvious that they make a huge deal out of Max's coma. Just her having powers? That's it? How is this such a huge deal? The Vecna has absorbed her and stuff can easily be debunked too.
Will
And I have Will proving that they do this shit with the window and foreshadowing ...just differently. This is almost not so surprising, is it? That they show us that he has a "crowbar" in his head. - Oh, yes, people.

And while the class scene in Season 2 is about him. It's also about Max, she however has light reflections like "God rays" pointing to her head when the focus changes with Mr Clarke's words on top. Seriously, people. This is a subtle as fireworks in the middle of the towns square.
ElMax Endgame
ElMax will turn out to be a dissociative identity/multiple personality disorder system of two individual minds residing inside the same body. Max's body. They'll be together. Literally.
This way Max is healed by the cure/medicine: El. - This way ElMax and Lumax can happen and it's in line with the themes of the show. And it fits in regards to the inspo for Eleven taken from Elfen Lied - kids having supernatural powers do do some lab science MK Ultra style etc etc, why not Fringe? Because Elfen Lied has a main character that has DID.

Rammstein Meet and Greet in Mexico City 10/02/22
Yesterday I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting four of the rammboys before their show in Mexico City and thought it’d be nice to share my experience (plus I’ll be able to reread and relive this every day for the rest of my life) ♥️
Get ready for a very long post:

Oliver:
He was serious but very kind. He came, greeted me quietly, smiled a bit when he heard me greeting him in German, signed my book and then left before we could have our picture taken because Tom (their meet & greet assistant) got distracted by someone and forgot to take it. I have to admit that I freaked a bit about that cause I thought I had missed my opportunity but Tom noticed immediately and asked Oli to come back.
We shot the pic and then I moved to the side to let him pass through but instead of that he stepped really close to me (which ofc made me scream internally) and without saying a word, he took the book from my hands and started flipping through it, then he saw the cover with a really confused face, gave it back to me and left. That’s when I started wondering if the band actually know about the merch they sell cause he looked as if he didn’t know what that was.

Flake:
He was so happy and cheerful the entire time. He greeted me in English and when I answered in German he gave me a huge smile and switched for the rest of our chat which went a bit like this:
(I handed him the book and he saw the pic I had chosen of him)
Flake: (laughing) „Das bin nicht ich!“ - That’s not me!
Me: „Was meinst du damit? Natürlich bist du das!“ - What do you mean? Of course that’s you!
Flake: (laughing even harder) „Nein, nein. Das gefällt mir nicht, das bin ich nicht“ - No, no. I don’t like that. That’s not me.
Me: „Wer ist es dann?“ - Who is it then?
Flake: (still laughing) „Ich weiß nicht, lass uns nach einem anderen Foto suchen“ - I don’t know, let’s look for another photo.
(We flipped through the pages until he saw one he actually liked)
Flake: „Sieh dir das an, das bin ich“ - Look at that one, that’s me.
(He signed it, we had our photo taken and then he started inspecting the book the same way Oli had)
Flake: (surprised) „Wo kauftest du es?“ - Where did you buy this?
Me: „In dem Rammstein Shop” - In the Rammstein shop
Flake: „Wirklich? Toll! Ich hatte es nicht gesehen! Sowieso, vielen Dank, viel Spaß bei der Show! - Really? Cool! I hadn’t seen it! Anyway, thank you so much, have fun at the show!
Me: „Vielen Dank!“ - Thank you!
Flake: (laughing as he walked away) „Aber das war nicht ich!“ - Still that wasn’t me!
Me: „Das bist du doch!“ - It is you!
After that I think someone asked him about the meaning of his nickname, to which he answered “Flake es flaquito” (“skinny” in Spanish)

Paul:
He arrived before Flake left and told him, wearing his usual cheeky grin, to speak Berlinerisch Deutsch with us. Then he greeted me in English and laughed really loud when he saw his pic on the book. I asked to hug him, to which he answered „Ja doch!“ (yes, of course!) and gave me a big nice hug (I wished that Tom had taken our photo in that moment but sadly didn’t). Then he wished me fun at the show and left.
After that, a girl showed him a photo of him and Richard kissing and asked him if they’d do it that night, he only laughed and said “We’ll see what happens”.

Till:
We knew he was coming cause he almost kicked the wall to the ground before coming in. He was super nice the entire time, spoke to everyone in Spanish and joked around a lot. Once he came to me, I totally froze and couldn’t do more than greet him and show him his pic on the book. He noticed my reaction with a smile and was very kind about it, he signed my book and then I somehow managed to ask if I could hug him. He immediately embraced me super tight and then we had our photo taken.
After that I was about to let him go but he held me tighter and started growling loudly. That’s when I finally came to my senses, I looked up to him and laughed but in a second he had already picked me up and was dragging me out of the room. Everyone started screaming and I told him “you can take me with you if you want, I’d be happy to go” to which he laughed, gave me a peck in the head and let me go. Then he took my hand gently and led me back to the group. Finally he shook my hand, made a bow and said it was really nice to meet me.
The meet & greet ended shortly after that and we were led back to the stage area. It’s needless to say that it was the best day of my life.

Storia Di Musica #285 - The Strokes, Is This It, 2001
Si può dire che un Paese che censura una foto così è davvero stupido? Perchè è successo davvero. Colin Lane è un fotografo di moda che ha appena finito un servizio fotografico e si accorge che nella sua borsa qualcuno ha dimenticato un prezioso paio di guanti Chanel. Mentre armeggia con una vecchia Polaroid Big Shot, a cui restano dieci fotografie, la sua ragazza esce dalla doccia. Nasce per caso una foto che piace molto ad entrambi, e che Lane conserva nel suo portfolio. Nei primi mesi del 2001 a Lane è affidata dalle rivista The Face un servizio fotografico con la band del momento, per alcuni "the next big thing" della musica americana, per altri un bluff. Caso vuole che la foto piaccia e il leader di questo gruppo di newyorkesi sulla rampa di lancio chiede se la foto possa essere usata per la copertina di un disco. Avuto il placet dalla sua fidanzata di allora, la foto del lato b diviene la copertina di un grandioso album di debutto. Che la le più importanti catene di vendita di dischi negli Stati Uniti, tra cui Walmart (che nel 2001 valeva negli Stati Uniti il 40% delle vendite di Cd), oscurarono per via del suddetto lato b, con un cartoncino prima e spingendo poi la casa discografica a sostituirla con questa:

Julian Casablancas e Albert Hammond Junior si incotnrano e scoprono di amare la musica nel prestigioso college privato di Le Rosey in Svizzera. Il primo è figlio del fondatore della più importante agenzia di modelle nel mondo, il secondo è figlio di Alber Hammond Senior, cantautore inglese che scrisse moltissime hit negli anni '70 e '80. Ritornato a New York, Casablancas con Nick Valensi, Fabrizio Moretti e Nikolai Fraiture, tre studenti dell'altrettanto prestigioso Dwight School di New York, forma il primo gruppo, a cui si aggiunge Hammond che era a New York per studiare cinema. Leggenda vuole che il primo concerto dei The Strokes avvenga in un club con 6 persone, poi divengono la resident band rock di un altro locale, gestito da Ryan Gentles, che è così ben impressionato che chiede ai 5 di diventare il loro manager. Manda un demo di 3 brani ad alcune etichette indipendenti, tra cui l'inglese Rough Trade, che entusiasta lo pubblica con il titolo The Modern Age, nel 2001, divenendo la prima pubblicazione ufficiale del gruppo. Il successo è clamoroso: l'Ep vende 300 mila copie e nel Regno Unito a giugno viene pubblicato un secondo Ep, Hard To Explain, che debutta al decimo posto della classifica. Inizia qui un percorso particolarissimo: della band piace il rock sporco, grezzo e diretto che ritorna ai fasti antichi, ma che stride non poco con l'aura di ricchi e viziati dei nostri. Ne nasce il dibattito accennato sopra, tra chi li vede come i nuovi salvatori del rock e chi invece una band che non può "naturalmente" sviluppare gli autentici valori rock. Personalmente ritengto che la verità non sta in nessuna delle due istanze, ma posso dire con criterio che il primo disco della band dimostra cose notevoli. In un primo momento, fu chiamato a produrre Gil Norton, che scoprì i Pixies, ma la band non fu affatto felice del lavoro di rifinitura, preferendo virare sull'allora sconosciuto Gordon Raphael: si trasferiscono ai Transporterraum Studios dell'East Village di New York, una sorta di scantinato buio dove si muore dal caldo dove però è allestito uno studio con le migliori attrezzature dell'epoca. Casablancas decide di registrare senza nessun lavoro di post produzione, spesso in una singola registrazione. Ne viene fuori un disco che unisce, visto che siamo a New York, la spensieratezza dei Television, l'immediatezza dei Ramones e un pizzico di fascino alla Velvet Underground.
Is This It si apre con l'omonima traccia, scritta tra l'altro all'ultimo momento da Casablancas che non trovava un ritornello adatto apre il disco, fresca, immediata, ma non così sciagurata come il punk. Tutto il disco è giocato su questo binario, al netto di canzoni bellissime, come Hard To Explain, dal muro di chitarre che ricorda i bei tempi e che rappresenta in maniera persino sincera la confusione del passaggio all'età degli adulti (I missed the last bus, I'll take the next train\I'll try but you see, it's hard to explain\I say the right thing, but act the wrong way\I like it right here, but I cannot stay). Notevoli sono anche Last Nite (che però ruba il riff a American Girl di Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers, dall'omonimo album di debutto del 1977) e Alone, Together, su una relazione che non vuole davvero funzionare (Oh, the first time it happened too fast\And second time I thought it would last\We all like it a little different). Take It Or Leave It, dal canto strozzato di Casablancas, doveva essere il singolo trainante e che doveva dare il titolo all'album, che ha altre due piccole storie da raccontare: Soma arriva dal romanzo di Aldous Huxley Il mondo nuovo (1932). Nel libro, “soma” è il nome di una droga immaginaria, una sostanza, prodotta in compresse, che rende euforici e cancella ogni paura. «Soma is what they would take when\Hard times opened their eyes», canta Julian in apertura. Gli Strokes non sono gli unici ad aver subito il fascino di questo elisir della felicità: già gli Smashing Pumpkins gli avevano dedicato un pezzo di Siamese Dream (1993) e prima di loro, nel 1984, avevano pubblicato la loro Soma anche i Tuxedomoon. New York City Cops è una canzone denuncia della brutalità della polizia. Casablancas ha raccontato di averla scritta in risposta all’omicidio di Amadou Diallo nel 1999 (episodio a cui Springsteen dedicò la formidabile American Skin (41 Shots). Lo studente guineano era disarmato quando quattro poliziotti in borghese a New York gli hanno sparato per errore: pensavano che al posto del portafoglio stesse tirando fuori dalla tasca una pistola. La canzone, che faceva originariamente parte di Is This It, dopo gli eventi dell’11 settembre viene rimossa dall’edizione americana (rispetto ad altri paesi, l'uscita era slittata a fine settembre). Principalmente per via ritornello: New York City cops, New York City cops\New York City cops, but they ain't too smart.
Il disco fu un successo, prima in Europa, e poi, gradualmente, negli Stati Uniti. Divennero, come scrisse una famosa rivista di moda, "i nuovi depositari del chiodo (inteso come giubbino di pelle, ndr) solo che rispetto a quello dei Ramones questo è di Yves Saint Laurent". La loro carriera continua ancora oggi, ma avendo perso quella sensazione che avevano all'inizio, l'essere la nuova speranza per far resuscitare il rock. Non lo sono stati, ma non si può dire che fossero un bluff, e lo dimostra ciò che dicono in Star Treatment gli Arctic Monkeys (del 2018):

Not because DJ needed him. But because Sully always kept an eye out for Sam, and he was so damn proud of him becoming a father. He just couldn't resist to visit DJ every now and then, and play with him.
One day, Sam heard DJ talking in his room. He went to check on him.
"Who're you talking to, buddy?"
"To Sully. He says you a he'o and uncle Dean was too! Like my Spidey, only cooler!"
Sam's smile made his dimples show, as his eyes scanned the apparently empty room.
"Hey, Sully. Good to know you're around for DJ."

In the finale, right before Sam is leaving the bunker for good after Dean died, there's a moving shadow in form of a human silhouette on the wall under the stairs. It's someone on set walking through the lightning, for sure. But my headcanon is, its Dean’s ghost. Dean only left for heaven once Sam was ready to step out of the bunker into a future without his brother. Only left once he saw Sam looking forward. And it fits with the narrative too, because only after this shot do we get to see Dean in heaven.
(I wish I could gif this part of the video. It's a blink and you'll miss it moment, but so obvious if you know.)

Tiba-tiba Eminem

The six decided to go to a dance club the third night they were there.

“And?” he asked
y/n started walking backwards in front of Damiano with her drink in one hand and her sigarette in the other “not bad”
“Not bad?” he said pretending to be hurt making her laugh
“Come on, I wasn’t insulting you” she said still laughing

“Oh come on!”
“Okay, okay. I could go on for days” he said making her laugh again “Why are you in Rome from wherever you come from?”
“I am from New York and I’m here for press” she answered
He smirked taking the last drag from his sigarette and throwing it away
“So, your friend has seen my series, have you?” she asked
“Yeah”
“And?” she asked taking the last drag from her sigarette and throwing it away
“Not bad” he said mocking her

Y/n throw her empty plastic cup in a trash can and Damiano grabbed her wrist “Come with me”
He dragged her in alley and pushed her against the wall.

She nodded.
Their lips collapsed.
Damiano’s hands immediately went to grab y/n’s waist to get her closer to his body.

“Yeah” she chuckled and gave him her number
“For how long do you stay?” he asked
“Four more days” she answered

OHHHHHH THAT'S A GOOD ONE LET'S TALK ABOUT THE BEST GIRL
Send me a ⭐ for a director’s commentary on a story/section of a story/line I wrote
I think I made most of my Hetalia OCs, if not all, back in 2013 when I first got into the show. I've had a certain fondness for England (& FrUK) back then and was a big fan of the that one fanon version of Scotland, by an artist called repoko, I believe? That still meant, back then, there were three open opportunities for OCs from the British Isles, so I made a Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland. Which I will use in my writing until the day I die, thank you very much, the canon versions change nothing. I was here first, motherfucker.
Either way - I haven't written anything set in the Hetaverse with them in years and I would approach them differently nowadays as well. In regards to how they're portrayed in LFLS: The two Irelands would have a much more fraught relationship with each other and Northern Ireland would be far more disillusioned with the world. I like one excellent interpretation by @oumaheroes on the uk bros and I'd broadly say that my OCs would work the same way in the Hetaverse. I also wouldn't use the same name in the Hetaverse as I do in LFLS; again, I named them when I was far younger knew far less about the world and the history of Ireland. I like the name Liam for Ireland and Ava for Northern Ireland. Although Orla would also be a nice option.
One more funfact before the rest goes under the cut: Soph's very weird hairstyle (a bob with bangs but a chinlong streak of hair in the middle, which she pins behind her hair) comes from my inability to draw 😆 I had the little art booklet that came with a special edition of Vol. 5 and I absolutely adored the way France's hair was drawn in it. However, I wasn't good at drawing it. So once I had drawn Soph and realized I had drawn a drastically different hairstyle than I wanted ... I didn't backpedal like "Oh, I can't draw it yet, but no, it is supposed to look like this!". I simply went "Guess that's her hair now" and ran with it. Luckily, in "Irish Problems" I had the chance to give it an in-story explanation.

Sadly, I can't provide well what I achieved instead since I have no fotos of Soph in left profile saved, but let's say I aimed for the sky and shot myself in the foot.
Now, about Sophie O'Connel in Like Father Like Son:
Her character was introduced into Irish Problems more like an afterthought than a central pillar of the story. In my Hetaverse writing, the two Irelands didn't get along very well, but I knew I had to change this if I was to write them as siblings. (Or maybe Republicanism had gotten the best of me by then, who knows. I'm just kidding.) Paddy was the person through which recent Irish history with the Troubles was viewed, at least in theory. Sophie did retain some ties to Northern Ireland, with her brother having bought/rented her sheep and the land in Northern Ireland and she was always spoiled by the Scottish, Gavin and his father William in particular. Aside from this though, Sophie is very little informed by the history of Northern Ireland.
Part of the reason may also be that I made the non-sensical choice back then to split Nothern Ireland and Ulster into two different characters. Hannah, Gavin's girlfriend, is that Ulster OC and originally from Belfast. If I did intend to do more parallels between history and LFLS, I could use these two to represent two different strains of people with different histories and realities in Northern Ireland, though ... Not that it matters much, since Like Father Like Son tries to stay faithful to the characterisation of Hetalia and I love to be inspired by history, but there are no allegories to be made.
Thusly, Sophie is primarily a very lonely teenager, who's trying to juggle her normal life with the burden of her patchwork family's way of life. A lot of the characters in Irish Problems and the first half of Italian Affairs lack, if not character, at least narrative purpose. So Soph's primary function is to explore the nature of grief and loneliness. Slowly, as I manage to establish the world around her in her POV chapters, it also becomes a story about growing up. I always joke that Soph's subplot is the YA portion of the book, but it's the truth. While she is of course not singular in her theme of grief or family, Sophie is outside of the political framework of LFLS for most of it. The focus is on herself, the comparedly smaller stakes of teenagehood and young adult life. This also means she gets to experience and express her emotions in a different manner that's probably more akin to how the reader does. I think that is part why Soph's chapters tend to resonate so well with some people; her despair does not need to be extrapolated. She doesn't have a fight or flight instinct kick in that postpones it. She wallows in her powerlessness, because it has no dire consequences for her.
Aside from all of that, it is a lot of fun to write Sophie and see where the story will take her. While I don't think her journey of finding her place in the world will necessarily facilitate positive character growth with her surroundings, it'll be interesting nonetheless. She's much like her brother, loud, boisterous and equipped with a good sense of humour and a mischievious streak. Plus, she knows what she's invested in and is willing to work for it - You don't know how hyped I am to write more Soph farmwork. To let her be an even more pragmatic person than her brother suits her, I think. The same Irish fighting spirit, but not as worn out as the lads around her are.

Intro: A broken tooth could almost have been the reason for our meeting with Pedro Pascal to be cancelled - and with that our conversation about roots, his new movie and times of change. 
Interview: It is almost eery how empty the streets of Los Angeles are under the gleaming sun. While Europe is finding its "new normal", people in L. A. are cutting their own hair even without being neurotics. Many of them have not seen their friends in half a year. The pandemic is out of control. So are the reactions to the situation. Inviting someone to a "distance drink" in the backyard can lead to the same consternation as proposing a relationship partner exchange. 
All the more of a surprise was Pedro Pascal's immediate confirmation. To the drink, not the partner exchange. He is one of the winners this year - and if Corona had not forced the movie industry to go on a holiday, he probably would not have had the time for this drink. After "Game of Thrones", the series in which his head was squished, followed 2015 the leading role in "Narcos" as a DEA agent on the hunt for Pablo Escobar, and now the leap onto the big Hollywood screen. As of 1. October the Chilean will appear in the blockbuster "Wonder Woman 1984". Furthermore, the second season of the "Star Wars" series "The Mandalorian" will start in October with him as the main character - unfortunately underneath the helmet. But we all seem to be under the same helmet in 2020. It is this man we want to meet, who worked as a waiter in New York a couple of years ago. Whose parents are political refugees that settled in Texas, and one day their son decided to walk into a drama club in high school. 
And then the cancellation. While we were preparing the house and garden for Pedro's drink and fashion shoot, which isn't an easy task under L. A.'s restrictions, his management called in with terrible news: Pedro has - no, not Corona - had to receive emergency surgery due to a sore tooth and is now lying in bed with a swollen cheek, making talking or shooting impossible. The sun shines onto empty streets. And our empty garden. 
A few days later, he stands in front of the door anyway, no huge bulge in his face, but stitches in his gum. No limousine service that dropped him off, he arrived in his own car and picked up his makeup artist on the way. He helps her to carry in all the equipment and states first and foremost: "I've got time today!" What a star! It does not seem like we are about to ask him how he managed to become a Hollywood sensation, but rather him asking us that question. Pedro Pascal! So, what kind of star is he then? 
Pedro Pascal: Sorry for ruining your plans. The operation was a total emergency. 
GQ: Really? We were wondering whether the swelling was the result of a secret trip to the plastic surgeon. Apparently, because of the quarantine in Hollywood, their schedules are packed. 
Sorry to disappoint you. A few days before our appointment I raced to the hospital with a tooth fracture and the worst pain I've ever felt - a hospital where the severe Corona cases are treated. I was unable to contact any dentists! Right before I parked, a specialist called back. I'll spare you the details of the surgery, gruesome. The pain was excruciating despite the 10 anaesthetic shots. The doctor said I wasn't the only one going through this, a lot of people grind their teeth at night thanks to stress. 
What are you most afraid of at the moment? 
The way the government is handling the pandemic scares me more than the virus itself. The lack of intelligent crisis management is a moral disgrace. The leadership crisis makes orphans out of all of us - we're left to fend for ourselves. 
How have you spent the last few months? 
With frozen pizza in jogging trousers in Venice Beach. I live in a rear building that's in the garden belonging to a family. In reality there are enough good takeout restaurants around that area, but for some reason I like salami pizza from the supermarket. 
That doesn't exactly sound like the movie star lifestyle. What does it feel like to be forced from top speed to zero? 
Considering the things happening in this world, my own state really isn't the top priority. But I would have to lie, if I said I wasn't disappointed. The entire cast and crew of "Wonder Woman 1984" put so much heart and soul into the production. We had so much fun on set. I had hoped to carry this feeling of exuberance around the globe to the openings of this movie. 
You are part of a political, socialist family that fled the Pinochet regime in Chile. What do you remember from back then? 
My sister and I were born in Chile, but I was only nine months old when we claimed asylum in Denmark. From there, we moved to San Antonio in Texas, where my dad worked as a doctor in a hospital. 
Texas isn't exactly considered to be socialist utopia. How well did you settle in? 
San Antonio isn't a cowboy city but rather very diverse with large Asian, Afro-American and Latino communities. In my memory it's a romantic place, culturally inclusive. The cultural shock only hit when we moved to Orange County in California later. Suddenly, the environment was white, preppy and conservative. 
How were you welcomed in California? 
To this day I'm ashamed when I think about how I let my classmates call me Peter without correcting them. I'm Pedro. Even without growing up in Chile, the country and language are part of me. I was quite unhappy in that place. At least I was able to switch schools and visit one in Long Beach, where I felt more comfortable. With its theatre programme, I found my path. 
Could you visit your family's homeland as a child? 
Yes, after my parents ended up on a list of expats that were permitted to re-enter the country. First, there was a big family gathering, then me and my sister were parked at some relatives' place for a few months while my parents returned to Texas. They probably needed a break from us. They'd had us at a very young age, had a vibrant social life, and my mother was doing her doctorate in psychology. 
Was your mother a typical young psychologist that tested her knowledge at home? 
You mean whether I was her lab rat? Absolutely. I can remember weird sessions camouflaged as games, where someone would watch my reactions to different toys. Even though I couldn't have been older than 6, I knew what was happening. My favourite thing was to be asked about my dreams. That was always a great opportunity to make up fantastic stories. 
Was that your first performance? 
Definitely! My strong imagination alarmed my mother, because I'd rather live in my fantasy world than in real life. I didn't like school. I ended up in the "problematic kid" category. At some point the subjects got more interesting and my grades improved. So many children are unnecessarily diagnosed with learning disabilities without considering that school can be daunting. Why is it acceptable to be bored out of your mind in class, when there are more stimulating ways to convey knowledge?
With everything happening in the world this summer: Do you believe that social hierarchy structures are genuinely being reconsidered? 
Hopefully. After the lockdown my first contact with people was at the Black Lives Matter protest. The atmosphere was peaceful and hopeful until the police got involved and provoked violence. At least during these times we can't avoid problems or distract ourselves from them as easily as we usually do. It seems that the pandemic provided us with a new sense of clarity: we don't want to go on like this. 
The trailer of "Wonder Woman 1984" represents the optimism of the 80s. That almost makes one feel nostalgic nowadays. 
That holds true. It's two hours of happiness. Patty Jenkins, the director, managed to make a movie full of positive messages. We shot in Washington, D. C., then in London and Spain - which now sounds like a different time. 
Do you miss travelling? 
I've only now realised what a privilege it is to just pack up your things and fly anywhere. With an American passport you can travel freely. And that's why the small radius we live in now is kind of absurd. Over the last few years I often retreated in between takes, because I was always on the road and overstimulated. Friends complained about how comfortable I had become. We all took social interactions for granted and realise now how reliant we are on human connection. Now, I wistfully think about all the party and dinner invitations I declined in the past. 
In L. A., people spend more time indoors or in nature than in other metropolises. Could this city become your safe haven after New York City? 
My true home is my friends. Ever since I was young I've lived the life of a nomad and haven't set roots anywhere. Until recently, my physical home was a place for arriving and leaving and hence I didn't want to overcomplicate living by owning lots of things. The opposite actually: Without having read Marie Kondo's book, I got rid of all the stuff that was unnecessary and lived a very minimalistic lifestyle. 
Is there something you collect or could never say goodbye to? 
Books! I still own the literature I read during my teen and university years. Recently I found a box of old theatre scripts and materials back from my uni days at NYU. I can't separate from art either, same as lamps or old pictures. Furniture and clothes are no problem though, they can be chucked. 
Do you remember any roles that were defined by their costumes? 
Yes, "Game of Thrones" comes to mind immediately. During that time I first understood what it means, as an actor, to be supported by a look. I owe that to costume designer Michele Clapton. She developed these very feminine robes and brocade cloaks for my role that looked very masculine when I wore them. I felt sexy in them. And very important were of course Lindy Hemming's power suits and Jan Sewell's blond hair for the tycoon villain Maxwell Lord in "Wonder Woman 1984". Relating to the style, I couldn't really see myself in the role since the shapes and colours of the 80s don't really fit my body. My type is the 70s.
Do you adopt such inspirations into your private closet? 
At this point in time, I'll choose any comfortable outfit over a cool look. Sometimes I mourn the days when I defined myself with fashion. It's a bit mad when I think about how, in the 90s as a teenager, I would go to raves; a proper club kid with crazy outfits: overalls, chute trousers, soccer shirts and a top hat like in "The cat in the hat knows a lot about that!" by Dr Seuss. Later in NYC I was part of a group that placed immense value on wearing a certain style. The fact that I only walk around in joggers nowadays is actually unacceptable! 
Normally, actors who work on comic screen adaptations become bodybuilders and eat ten boiled chicken breasts per day. You don't? 
My body wouldn't be able to handle that. I find it difficult enough to maintain a minimum level of fitness. As of your mid 40s, you suddenly need a lot more discipline. Until the tooth incident happened, I worked out a couple of times a week with a trainer to keep the quarantine body in shape. 
What would annoy you the most, if you were your own roommate? 
I can be very bossy. I have to gather all my goodwill not to force my movie choice on to everyone else. When I want something, I'm not passive aggressive about it, I attack head on. Also, I can get caught up in tunnel vision: When i feel down, I can't imagine that I'm ever going to feel better again. I have difficulty with seeing the bigger picture when experiencing problems or emotions. Method acting really wouldn't be my thing. That's why I try to only work on projects that feel good and where people encourage and lift each other up. 
While you were trying on the outfits you pointed out a lack of self-esteem. How does that coincide with your career? 
Isn't it interesting how traits and circumstances go hand in hand? Self-esteem comes from the inside, but it's also influenced by what society believes. We use critical stares from the outside against ourselves. I lived in New York for 20 years, I studied there and worked as a waiter up until my mid 30s, because I couldn't live off acting. It was always so close. The disappointment of always just barely missing a perfect part or opportunity is exhausting. When is the right time to stop trying and what's plan b? That's not just a question actors ask themselves, but anybody who struggles to earn a livelihood - unrelated to how much potential they have or how close their dream may seem. We are beginning to see now how our narrow definition of success is destroying our communities. At the same time, it's becoming obvious that, until this day, your family background and skin colour determine your chances of living a dignified existence. 
What are the positives of becoming a leading man later in life? 
I have the feeling that I've got control over my life - without the pressure of having to accept projects or be a social media personality. That surely also has to do with the fact that I'm a man. Women are surely pressured to appear quirky at any age. 
Life is always a management of risks - especially at this time. For what would you risk losing something? 
Usually, if you don't play the game you're not going to win anything. That applies to friendship, love, work, creativity. Anything that really means something to me, is worth the risk. 
Wonder woman 1984 will appear in cinemas 01.10. The 800 million dollar earning DC comic franchise is moving into the New York 80s with its sequel. It looks spectacular - only Pedro Pascal with blond hair in a three piece Wall Street suit looks better.

RIP Daria Nicolodi (19.6.1950 – 26.11.2020)
"I grew up in a house that was like a library or a museum. I feel I refined Dario's taste very much. I went with him to many art exhibitions. [...] I feel I guided Dario to something outside the scope of just cinema, towards art, music, theatre, and other things."

A true icon of the silver screen, and one of the most significant figures in Italian genre cinema of the 20th Century. Daria was born in Florence, in 1950, into a talented family of intellectuals and artists: her father was a lawyer, her mother an academic; her maternal grandfather was Alfredo Casella, a composer and conductor who counted Stravinsky, Mahler and Strauss among his friends.
Daria moved to Rome while still a teen, and by 1970 she was beginning to find work on stage and screen. Elio Petri was quick to spot her talent, guiding her through her first theatrical roles, and ultimately casting her as the female lead in La proprietà non è più un furto (Property Is No Longer a Theft, 1973), a highly political satire about wealth and class in modern Italy. The following year, she attended auditions for Profondo Rosso (Deep Red), where she met director Dario Argento. Until this point, she had mostly played attractive blondes and love interests; Argento could see that she was capable of more nuance, and had her cut her long hair and dye it red, adopt a more masculine style of dress, and bring her wry sense of humour to the character of Gianna. In return, Daria adopted some of the director's mannerisms and habits for her character, particularly in her physical movements and hand gestures. The two worked well together, on screen and off; they soon became romantically involved, and in 1975 Daria gave birth to a daughter, Asia Argento (her second, having previously had a child with sculptor Mario Ceroli).
Daria and Dario would remain together for the next ten years. In the process she became not only his partner, but his closest collaborator, and in many ways his muse. Before Asia was born, the two took a holiday in northern Europe, travelling around France, Germany and Switzerland. The trip reminded Daria of her grandmother - another artist, the French pianist Yvonne Müller Loeb Casella - who had a keen interest in the supernatural, and thrilled the young Nicolodi with tales of her time at an academy on the Swiss/German border, where the faculty had all practised black magic. Those stories would form the basic outline of Argento's next film, Suspiria (1977). The couple developed the idea between them, and worked together on the script, incorporating everything from fairy tales to Nicolodi's dreams. In later years, Argento would downplay the contribution made by Daria to the finished script, but her influence - and in turn, the way Suspiria would influence the entire horror genre, and develop Argento's work - is undeniable. Her fight for official recognition - and a screen credit as co-writer - left the actor exhausted.
Daria had also intended to act in the film, but was prevented by injury. She returned for Inferno (1980), the spiritual sequel to Suspiria, and once again contributed behind the cameras: the original concept was Nicolodi's, and she worked on the script with Dario. Unwilling to fight him again, her writing work went uncredited this time. With their professional relationship strained, Nicolodi would only agree to a small supporting role in Argento's next film, Tenebre (Tenebrae, 1982). However, when the American actor who had been cast as the female lead dropped out just before the start of shooting, Daria once again found herself starring in an Argento horror film. The shoot was not a happy one; as Daria bonded with her onscreen love interest, Anthony Franciosa, over a shared passion for theatre, Argento became jealous and difficult. The atmosphere on set deteriorated to such a point that, when directed to give a short, sharp scream for the final shot of the film (her final day of shooting), Daria instead unleashed a long, deafening howl of terror. What she described as her "cathartic release from the whole nightmare" would become one of the most iconic moments in the film.
By the time they were making Phenomena (Creepers, 1985), the relationship between Nicolodi and Argento was beginning to fail. They would separate that year, and although she initially did not express any interest in working for the director again, she was tempted back for Opera (1987) by an elaborate death scene. Outside of her work with Dario, Nicolodi had built up a modest but significant filmography with other big names in Italian genre cinema. For the great Mario Bava, she starred in his final film, Shock (1977); for his son, Lamberto, she took a supporting role in Le foto di Gioia (Delirium, 1987). Michele Soavi, a protégé of her former partner, cast her in La Setta (The Sect, 1991), but mainly she would concentrate on the stage from this point on, describing theatre as her first love. The tragic death of her elder daughter, Anna, in 1994, only kept her further away from the limelight. It was the burgeoning career of younger daughter Asia, both as actor and director, that would tempt her back in front of the cameras.
Although she made comparatively few films, Daria's impact on Italian horror cinema has been huge. What's most fascinating is how deeply individual and unique each of her performances were. It's tempting, in looking at her work with Dario Argento, to perhaps project a potential pattern in her different roles, that aligns with how he may have viewed their relationship. In Profondo Rosso, shot whilst they were still getting to know one another, she is self-contained, confident, attractive and capable. By Inferno, when their relationship was well established and they had a child together, her character is much more vulnerable, an innocent caught up in something terrible and in need of protection. In Tenebre, one of Argento's most accomplished films, she has her weakest part - she was unhappy with the role, which is notably underwritten compared to the characters around her, and in which her main purpose seems to be to react to the events unfolding. As their relationship faltered on the set of Phenomena, she took her ugliest role of all - a dark distortion of obsessive motherhood. Perhaps it might seem like a disservice to her, to make these comparisons, but it is also true that Daria was an incredibly obliging actor - always at pains to give her director (Argento or otherwise) exactly what she thought they needed, whether requested or not. Petri had told her she reminded him of a figure from his past, so she consciously exaggerated those mannerisms to please him; Argento originally struck her as egocentric, so she mirrored his stance and his gestures. A consummate professional, I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibilities that by Phenomena she was channeling their dysfunctional relationship and distorted self images into one of the most intense and disturbing performances of her career.
I would have first seen Daria in Profondo Rosso, more than a decade ago now. It remains one of my favourite films, and her performance in it quite simply one of my favourite performances ever given by an actor. Gianna is such a complete and unique creation, unlike not only any female character in Italian cinema at that point, but quite unlike any character in a horror film. Profondo Rosso is a giallo film, perhaps the finest giallo film - it is a bloody, terrifying slasher film in which horrific violence is visited on the undeserving. And as Gianna, Daria spends the entire film incredibly, almost deliriously happy. She grins, she poses, she spins her cigarellos between her fingers. She teases David Hemmings, pricks at his ego, challenges him to arm wrestling contests. She drives a broken down car, tricks her way into crime scenes, and takes photographs of witnesses even when strictly forbidden to. She is among the most likeable, endearing, and thoroughly real protagonists to ever appear in what is essentially a fantasy film. She is so very human that she grounds what should be a totally absurd concept, and in the process provides exactly what it is that makes that film work so well - and it did work, the film was a huge critical and commercial success, and revitalised Argento's career after an early 70s slump.
There are two cuts of Profondo Rosso, and I know there is a school of thought that the shorter, international cut (which removes much of Nicolodi's work, trimming all the more jovial and character-building scenes) is the superior one - that it makes for a sharper, more suspenseful thriller. I absolutely disagree. To cut the relationship scenes is to take out the heart and soul of the film: Hemmings is the purported lead, but his character is detached, emotionally stunted. The heart of the film is in Nicolodi - in her sharp suits and twinkling eye, in her laughter and her fear - and the only reason the suspense works at all is because the audience has a reason to care, someone to care about. Profondo Rosso was the first time I saw an Italian film not as a garish thrill, but as something much deeper, more profound. It was perhaps the first time I realised that a horror film could also be art. I fell in love with Italian cinema, with gialli, and with Daria Nicolodi.

I've been interested in JCH Streetpan for a while now. It's so rare to get actually newly available films on the market, as opposed to people like Ribsy or Kosmo Foto who just release stenciled over fomapan and pretend they're contributing a new film stock.

While JCH Streetpan isn't newly developed, it's an otherwise unavailable surveillance film which is spooled for 35mm. I've always wanted to try it, but thought it was pricey, but when I was ordering Rodinal, I noticed the site sold it for under 10$, and the shipping was the same as if I was ordering just Rodinal anyway.

Overall, I really like this film. It's got a lot of punchy contrast (developed in D-76 at 1+1), but plenty of latitude. Definitely nice detail, and shot with the Petri Color 35, it out-resolves my scanner.

Would I shoot it again? Yes, most likely, if I don't have to pay too much for it. I don't know when that will be though. I got some big B&W moves coming up.
Personally though, one thing I really enjoyed is using the Petri as a diary camera. I took it everywhere with the mentality of taking at least one photo every day. It took a while to get through the roll (definitely went on a walk at the end wanting to burn through it), but it was a really good way of changing the pace of my photo-taking. I think I'll stick to that practice for a while.

This book contains images of snap-shots, photographs by Warhol’s associates, and photographic reproductions of Warhol’s work. Numerous pop-up elements surprise you. Even a balloon was included, which is often found degraded and stuck to the pages, causing big headaches for conservators.
