I would confidently type 85% of my department (research and investigation for a law firm) as Lion Birds. I wouldn't be surprised if this patterns holds to a lesser extent across a lot of legal/law enforcement/military type professions, and maybe politics to a lesser extent.

familiar friday - under the shadow of the almighty

don't we all love psalm 91 and how it speaks of the protection that can be found in our Lord.  "a thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you." psa 91:7  there's that and so much more available to those who trust their God and believe He is able to deliver.

there's daniel in the lion's den, in the midst of ravenous beasts who dare not feast.  there's the three faithful hebrew children who would not bow to an idol.  they were not delivered from the fiery furnace, but there was a fourth who walked with them so they were not consumed.  then there's joseph, betrayed into slavery, who remained true to our Lord and was elevated to the second command in all of egypt.

you know me and my stories.  well, i have another one for you.  are you ready?

there was an article in the national geographic several years ago.  it provided a penetrating picture of God's protection.  after a forest fire in yellowstone national park, forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno's damage.  one ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the base of a tree.

somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick.  when he gently struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother's wings.  the loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise.

she could have flown to safety but refused to abandon her babies.  when the blaze had arrived and the heat had scorched her small body, the mother had remained steadfast.  because she had been willing to die, those under the cover of her wings would live.

what was it Jesus spoke over jerusalem and in so speaking, speaks to us all now?  "how often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!"  matt 23:37

our Lord wants to be our protector, our rescuer.  He wants to rescue us not only from eternal separation (meaning damnation), but also from this world.  Jesus, like the mother hen, gave His life that we might live.  just as the mother took her statuesquely stand in the face of imminent death, our savior uttered not a word of defense for Himself.  He took our offenses upon Him.

i don't know if hens have a language or not but i can just hear that mother chirping in anguish now, beckoning her little ones to gather under her wings for protection.  and i can hear our Jesus beckoning us all now.  "come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." matt 11:28  I will give you protection from the wrath to come.

there are those who will while others run about excitedly, even venturing into the flames that would consume them.  but the offer still stands.  it is a whole heartened open invitation to "whosoever will".

because of Him we have lives changed, testimonies given and God glorified.

"when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you."  isa 43:2

"He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives."  luke 4:18

He will not only save and deliver us, He will elevate us to kingdoms and authorities even joseph never dared to dream of.

the invitation is for now, but the age of this "amazing grace" is quickly closing.  i don't know what determines the close of this age.  the word says simply says: "the fullness of the gentiles".  but is it time?  is it a number of souls to be saved?  or is it a measure of sin that must be met?  "the secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever."  deut 29:29

let us grasp the things revealed to us.  "you know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times." matt 16:3  we know how to discern the seasons, and it is the winter of this age, deep into winter.  

"He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge." - psa 91:4

where do you want to be found - when the storm is raging, when all your other supports have failed, when judgment is coming and you stand before the judge?  when all your life and deeds are under review and nothing can be hidden.

“And we are off to a killer start!” Frank announced. “After one hell of a first period, which resulted in two goals against the Snakes from our own Gryffindor Lions, the score is currently 2-0 and I for one am quite excited for this second period.”

“I have to agree, Frank,” Lee said. “We all knew this game was going to be charged, but I can’t say I remember the last time we saw the Lions sink their teeth in with this kind of ruthlessness. The closest might the game against Vegas after Fenrir Greyback’s rib-breaking hit on the captain last year.”

Frank hummed his agreement. “For those who don’t know, the decision over Regulus Black’s contract with the Snakes has finally reached the defendant’s side. Allegations have officially been made against the Snakes organization concerning what can only be called abuse against their players in order to end Black’s contract early. Unfortunately, there have also been several arising rumors about player-on-player conflicts on the team.”

“We can’t confirm or deny any of the breaking stories yet, but I think it’s safe to say neither of us are surprised at the Lions’ temper tonight,” Lee continued. “It’s a tricky situation. Accusations of this kind have never been made against an organization before, and certainly not so publicly. And here we go for the second period, everyone! The referee approaches with the puck while Pascal Dumais and Lucius Malfoy prepare for the drop—Dumais wins it! A quick pass to winger James Potter, and this looks like it’s going to start fast and stay fast—”

“—Pots passes to Lupin, who carries it up the ice and redirects a hit from Snape before snapping it back. Potter goes up, takes a brutal check from Malfoy—”

And the ice exploded into a melee. “My God,” Lee managed, baffled. “For anyone watching at home, that check on James Potter has resulted in what can only be called a knock-down, drag-out fight between these rival teams. I have to admit I was waiting for that pressure to blow, Frank, but I didn’t think it would be like this. Even the goalies have dropped their gloves.”

“I can’t even make out everyone’s numbers from here,” Frank confirmed. “Oh, on the outside—alright, it looks like Sirius Black, who many of you will recall is Regulus Black’s older brother, has dragged Lucius Malfoy from the mess and has him by the front of his jersey. I’m not sure if we can zoom in for viewers at home, but it looks to me like Malfoy’s skates are just barely on the ice.”

“Did you do it?” Sirius asked lowly as his blood pounded in his ears and his fists crumpled Malfoy’s number. The whole rink sounded like it was underwater; he could hear the fans roaring and the noise of a messy fight behind him, but he kept his gaze firmly on the weaselly face in front of him. Malfoy remained silent. Sirius shook him hard, hoisting him half an inch higher until they were eye-level. “Did you do it?”

“I d—I don’t—”

Regulus had been so pale as he gave his testimony, holding his chin high and his hands still as he recounted story after story after story of the hell his supposed teammates put him through to ‘prove his loyalty’. Sirius would make sure Lucius Malfoy and his habit of teaching Reg he was unlovable proved their goddamn loyalty to whatever god he believed in, because it was high time Sirius taught him what happened when you fucked with one of his brothers.

Lucius grabbed at his forearms, but Sirius kept a steady hold on him. “Riddle made me—”

“You breathe on him again,” Sirius interrupted, hardly above a harsh whisper as he kept unblinking eye contact. “You touch him. You contact him. You even look at my little brother again, and I will knock your teeth so far down your throat you’ll never find them all. And tell your goalie that if a single one of those stories about him turns out to be true, I won’t be so nice to him.”

Sirius dropped him without warning; Lucius’ skates hit the ice with a dull thud and skidded out from under him for a moment before he scuttled back to his side like the roach he was. Whistles blew in harmony and he turned just in time to see the refs finally pulling the teams apart. His Lions were roughed up, but the Snakes looked worse. Good.

They were the reason he had to drive Regulus to give his statement and watch him shake in his seat the whole way there. They were the reason his little brother dry-heaved the whole morning before that. They were the reason a grimace flickered over Regulus’ face whenever he put his old gear on, and why his hands were scarred from the dozens of blisters he had acquired during their barbaric drills.

Sirius was not an angry man. He made an exception for the one person he couldn’t protect.

His pulse had just started to calm when Riddle glanced over at him across the ice and a sneer curled his lip—Sirius’ blood kicked up in an instant and he lunged for him. You were the one he feared the most, he wanted to snarl. He was supposed to trust you to lead, and you failed him just like everyone else.

Referees caught them both around the chest just before they met in the middle, but Sirius leaned close enough that their visors touched at the forehead. “You’re goddamn lucky you’re in that net,” he hissed. Riddle’s eerie eyes showed no fear, but they showed no triumph, either. Good.

Everyone on the ice was sent to the boxes—the second lines skated out, looking much less volatile but still glaring daggers at one another. Remus sat next to him with an ice pack against the black eye forming over one side of his face and murder on his lips. “Which one got you?” Sirius asked, refocusing on the game.

“Dolohov.”

“And?”

“He’s down a tooth, I think.”

Sirius could feel himself shaking inside his pads. “I want to make them pay.”

A rare fury flashed in Dumo’s eyes as he took the space on Sirius’ other side, bumping his shoulder. “Then we win this game, mon fils. We don’t give them an inch to stand on. And then we go home and we stay with Regulus until this is over.”

Sirius took a deep breath through his nose, watching their timer count down. Picking another fight wouldn’t do them any favors—grinding the Snakes into the dust would certainly make him feel good, and crushing Reg in a hug when they got home would be even better. He had a lot of time to make up for.

i remember seeing ask about an anon thinking on too large of a scale with trying to figure out their primary. that got me thinking that im probably doing the same thing. so what could be some lower stakes or day-to-day decisions that could separate the primaries? (more specifically idealists on gut feeling) thanks :D

Coincidentally, I just finished this post about gut instincts vs conscious thought (though it was mainly about the Secondaries). In it, I did note that the Idealists are divided by Lions trusting their gut instinct while Birds are guided by the conscious mind. Not to say most of us don't listen to both on occasion, but this is about which we trust and are more comfortable using as a guide over the other. Also, I should mention that some Bird Primaries build their system out of their feelings. They sort through theses feelings in a very conscious way, however, unlike Lions. Hold on, I think I have a quote of someone describing this...

My inner values and feelings are like a building, a structure of affections that inform my worldview. This involves an inner love for certain things, and an inner repulsion for other things. My values and feelings form “blocks” of varying hardness, depending on how strongly I feel about them; the stronger ones are more resilient…I constantly discover more about the structure as I go, and what I should change to make it better. For example, I didn’t have to factually discern a respect for human dignity; I simply found myself in situations where people did not respect human dignity, and it made me angry — I found out that I hate bullying.

(I actually found that when I was writing my SHC vs Cognitive Functions post, so technically it's about the Fi function. But I'm willing to bet you understand how it applies.)

But okay, to actually answer your question, I think with the current state of the world we have plenty of "big" decisions we have to make that are still easy to visualize. Like when it comes to COVID, what shaped your ideas about masks and vaccines? Or if you're of voting age in your country, how do you decide what/who to vote for? Even "smaller" than that though, have you ever been in an argument? How did you know your side was worth fighting for? Or if the other person changed your mind, how did they do it? What part of you did they appeal to, and how easy was it change your mind? (The trend is that Birds have an easier time changing their mind than Lions.) Have you ever been asked to two places at once? How did you decide which appointment to attend? Or if you have ever seen someone doing something you considered wrong, how did you know that it was wrong?

Based on what I’ve seen of their testimony, Bird Primaries generally have an easier time explaining these things because, for the most part, they’ve already thought it through. Lion Primaries may have a harder time putting their answers into words because in the past they simply felt something was right or wrong, and that was enough for them to base a decision on.

Roman-Era Figurine Of Griffin Unearthed In Emirate Of Sharjah

The Sharjah Archaeology Authority (SAA) has announced the discovery of a bronze statuette of a griffin - a mythical creature with eagle wings, a lion’s head, and a huge bird’s foot with claws - in the Mleiha area, in the United Arab Emirate of Sharjah.

Dr. Sabah Aboud Jassim, Director General of the SAA, explained that "the artefact is part of a censer bearing three statues of similar shape and distributed in a symmetrical circular shape, topped by a large and luxurious bowl used for burning incense."

He added that it likely dates to the first century AD and is testimony to the existence of a trading network between Mleiha and nearby Roman provinces.

Hey, Exploded Bird/Lion Sec anon here! Thank you so, so much for sorting me. It’s helped a LOT.

I was having a shite time with understanding myself, trying to get why kid!me and current!me seem like such different people. The part about a Lion system changing to a (Burnt) Badger one? That explains So Much.

You know, I was filled with so much joy when I read this though, looking back at my life and seeing it through the lens of my Sorting, and suddenly everything’s so clear. I love the feeling of understanding after months of frustration.

And IDK why I didn’t consider Exploded Bird earlier, I went back and read the description and damn if it doesn’t fit me to a T. I think, the first time I read it I was too repulsed by the other type of Exploded Bird (conspiracy theorist) and just, having a mini crisis as I parsed through all my decisions and convictions to confirm that I wasn’t one. They make me super uncomfortable.

Lion Sec is obvious in hindsight, but they’ve always seemed too powerful and confident for me. I really do feel stifled in my current situation, unable to be truthful without the atmosphere at home becoming unbearable. Being bullied in the past hasn’t exactly helped either, I hate keeping my head down but there are times when I feel like it’s the only choice. I am trying to become bolder so that I may, one day, live unapologetically.

After I sent that Sort Me post, I had started changing my values to more Lion ones. But I really do like Badger morals, so I think I’ll instead focus on unburning that. And after that’s done, try to find a way to mend that exploded Bird Pri.

Also, sidenote, I read about Bird Lions becoming temporarily catatonic after their entire worldview being shaken, and damn if that wasn’t me after my sister told me about the Brain in a Vat theory. Bit extreme, but I spent  m o n t h s  trying to recover. Currently, I have a love/hate relationship with Philosophy.

Thanks for the lovely note, Bird Lion. It helps putting words to this stuff, and I love that I could help with that a little. I like your plan. It’s a good plan. And you’re right, Exploded Birds *are* tricky. Exploded Lions have a very distinct *look* to them, and so do Exploded Badgers etc. But Exploded Birds can make themselves nuts taking in all the information - or none of the information - and that looks very different from the conspiracy theorist type who has picked only *one* source to trust.

There's Definitely Some Kind of Devil Worship Going On Here

(Case 4, part 7)

So I've recently acquired the complete scripts for both English and Japanese versions of this game up to this case and I have noticed I missed a lot, which is to be expected, but I will get into those missing details at a later date. In the meantime, please bear with me and my petty attempts at humor.

There's a bit I missed capturing in the beginning, where Soseki greets them and talks about the saying, 'The early bird gets the worm' and ensues an amusing conversation about how Soseki didn't sleep a wink to avoid eating worms. In the original, he speaks of a similar Japanese proverb that goes, "Early rise brings a little fortune", worth of 3 mon. Mon was the cheapest coinage in Japan of the time, though by the Meiji era, much of those coinages were being phased out for the modern yen. The saying often translated to the same thing, though the ensuing conversation is different due to the mention of money. Soseki hoped that by not sleeping a wink, he could save it up to a whole yen from that 3 mon.

Mind you, a whole yen back then would likely be worth hundreds of yen these days, but certainly not enough to buy any of his books.

He mentions wishing having nine lives, like that of a cat. I also appreciate all the occasional nods this case gives to Natsume-san's "I Am a Cat", even if much of the moments were the English insulting him about his "cat-like" features.

In the JP, he speaks in prose about the abrupt end of one's life to end in an exclamation, "嗚呼不安ッ!" (aa, fu'an), or "Aah, so trepidating!" Or, literally "uneasy". Take your pick.

Ha! I catch even the subtler alliterative prose too, no matter the format! Though, it seems they could only afford an approximate alliteration for this one. In the JP, he likewise summarizes Naruhodo's bad luck as "the worst since the founding of our nation." Ouch.

Ahahaha! Yes, he addresses her with her full title as in the original, but the localizers took a step further by giving her the "Non-Locum" and "Esquiress". Perhaps I should earn myself a title of nobility, as a "Royal" myself! "Lady Rubia the Top Pomeranian of Ace Attorney Encyclopedic Esteem!"

...No, scratch that. Just Rubia is fine.

Anyway, onto the trial and Gregson's testimony...

The names of the places on this map are all true to what they were originally, except the shop that Soseki went to. Thanks to my ineptitude, I failed to catch the actual screen where "Yore Books" was located on the map. It was originally known as "Boro Books", for a pun with boroboro, meaning "tattered". Fitting, I'd say.

On God, I'd forgotten just how funny this case was. That wine must be fiercely bitter indeed because this man is spitting savage! (This is from after Ryu finds out where said bookshop was.)

Noting this here: I'd like to make a minor correction from a previous post about Soseki's receipt. The book titled "The Lion's Mane" is this fourth book shown here, but for copyright reasons, its name was changed to "The Lion's Pride" here. The other three books have been retained from the source, except for "A Meal for Gaboriau". That is, Emile Gaboriau. (Silly me!) In the JP, it was originally "The Sea and Gaboriau", which I'm trying to remember what famous novel that may be referencing, and all I'm thinking of is Ernest Hemingway's famous "The Old Man and the Sea". Maybe it's a parody?

The group drove metal spikes into trees in Idaho set to be cut down — an act designed to make it more dangerous for loggers to saw through the trunks. “It is hard to imagine a nominee more disqualified than Tracy Stone-Manning,” said Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), the top Republican on the committee, at one point holding up a gray metal spike. He was among the 10 Republicans on the panel who voted against her nomination. . . . Supporters laud Stone-Manning, currently a senior adviser at the National Wildlife Federation, as an experienced environmental policy hand able to strike compromises with activists and industry alike. But her opponents say her affiliation with the activist group Earth First in the 1980s is disqualifying. . . . For years, Stone-Manning has maintained she had only a tangential role in the tree-spiking. She told the Senate she was never the “target” of the investigation. In testimony at the trial of two other Earth First members, she said she sent the letter only because she “didn’t want anybody getting hurt.” The letter, however, carried a threatening tone. The forest, it read, “is home to the Elk, Deer, Mountain Lions, Birds, and especially the Trees … You bastards go in there anyway and a lot of people could get hurt.” And an investigator in the tree-spiking case, Michael Merkley, recently told the energy committee that Stone-Manning was an initial target of the investigation and only talked after she was granted immunity in exchange for her testimony. “Ms. Stone-Manning was not an innocent bystander, nor was she a victim in this case,” Merkley wrote in a letter to the committee. “And, she most certainly was not a hero.”

It was May 1987, and [George] Alexander was 23. His job was to split logs. He was nearly three feet away when the log hit his saw and the saw exploded. One half of the blade stuck in the log. Normally when a big tree is sawed, they start from the outside and square off the edges first. But the tree that George was sawing on May 8, 1987 was a 12-inch pecker-pole, and because it was so small he took the first cut down the middle. Halfway through the 20-foot log, the saw hit a 60-penny nail. “That nail must have been recently placed and countersunk,” George told me. He had checked the log when he started cutting it and had seen no sign of the metal. And because he hit the nail square-on, there was no warning sound. “Usually there’s a high-pitched metal sound and you have time to get out of the way,” explained George. “This time I didn’t hear nothing but ‘BOOM!'”

The next thing he knew, George was lying on the floor covered with his own blood. “I knew I was dying. And all I could think about was Dick Edwards, and all the shit he gave me when I complained about the saw. I tried to get up, but they pushed me back down. I tried to beckon to Edwards so he would come close enough for me to get my hands around his throat in a death grip. If I had to die, I wanted to take that bastard with me.”

A 12-foot section of the huge sawblade had broken off and hit George in the throat and face, ripping through his face mask and cutting into his jugular vein. His jaw was broken in five places and a dozen teeth were knocked out. The blade was wrapped around him, and his co-workers had to blowtorch it off while they tried to keep him from bleeding to death.

“The saw hit me flat,” said George. “If it had hit me with the teeth I’d be dead. I’m only here because my friend Rich Phillips held my veins together in the hour before the ambulance came.”
