this is basically what I do

I hold multiple citizenships & passports

currently I lurk on the left coast of the USA

I travel a lot for work & pleasure, so when I vanish it’s just I lost internet access (I’m not dead yet)

my (too many) degrees are in (among other things) anthropology + maths (focus on stats, history of pop culture, etc... look, it made sense at the time and it seems to have worked out for me)

Throughout history, the dates that count as the "new year" have changed a couple of times due to regime changes and political decisions within Thailand. Today, the official new year is on January 1st, like the rest of the world. The 1st of January is called ปีใหม่ (“pi mai”), ปี is “year,” and ใหม่ is “new.”

Alongside this is Songkran-สงกรานต์. Songkran is considered the Thai New Year that takes place in mid-April. The date of Songkran used to be calculated each year by a royal astrologer, but now, for practical reasons, it is officially on April 13–15 every year. Taking place during a long weekend, Songkran is the time of year when people emphasize the importance of honoring their ancestors and taking a break to go home and spend time with their families. Offices and shops close to accommodate the holiday and travel plans, which can be the whole weekend or extend to the entire week.

Like many Thai traditions, Songkran has a lot of Brahmanism influence and many aspects that involve Buddhism. Buddhism is the most prominent religion in Thailand, with more than 90% of Thai people being Buddhist. Therefore, many significant acts during Songkran symbolize cleansing, unity, and good fortune for the upcoming new year. Bathing Buddha images and making merits with family members is traditionally done, and other fun activities, such as water fights, feasting, games, and folk dance, are also part of the celebration (UNESCO, TheNationThailand).

Currently, to boost tourism in Thailand, the Thai government has extended Songkran celebrations in various ways. Places such as Silom Road and Khao San Road are spotlighted as destinations to attract international travel, all while encompassing the usual Thai traditions of water fights, street food, and music (SindhornMidtown). Many places and institutions have begun their countdown to Songkran!

I've seen a couple of folks talking about wanting to learn more about the history of BL, and this is the most comprehensive, up-to-date collection of English-language academic material on the topic I know of. It's probably been asked before, but where do people watch the BLs that don't get uploaded to YouTube? I keep seeing GIFs and talks about shows I'd love to watch, but I've no clue where to access them. And yes, I'm willing to pay if that's what it takes.

Hiii! So, the vast majority of shows are either going to be on Gaga, Viki, or iQIYI. You can usually find out which one by looking at the show’s MDL page, but not always. If I can’t easily watch it in one of those three places, I watch it here. (You’re gonna need a good ad blocker for that one.) Hope this helps! If you’re looking for something in particular, just let me know and I can find it for you 🩷

it totally depends on the show. for anything on YouTube, I grab it using 4K Video Downloader (it's free).

for iQIYI, I definitely do not download directly from the site using Python 👀 there's a couple random sites I use for K-BLs, J-BLs & in desperate times, I'll screenrecord using OBS (currently my only option for Gaga shows) or grab an HQ version off of DailyMotion. that kind of quality is a rarity on there, though.

there are several invitation-only sites you can gain access to through Discord servers, but you generally need to seed content in order to retain your access. I know nothing about that, so I let my memberships lapse.

🌺Lady Songkran🌺

Lady Songkran is both rooted in mythology and contemporary tradition. The myth involves a god, Kabilla Phrom, challenging a young child, Thammabal Kumara, to answer his riddle; if the child did not, he would lose his head, and if Kabilla Phrom lost, he would lose his. Upon finding the answer by listening to the birds, the child won the bet, and the god cut his own head off, and the god’s seven daughters carried their father’s head to Mount Sumeru, thus preventing calamity from falling upon the Earth.

Here is a dance performed by Udon Thani Rajabhat University. The lyrics tell a very short version of Kapila Brahma's story and then describe each Lady Songkran.

The following video by Point of View goes over the myth in its entirety and the seven daughters coinciding with each day of the week; whichever day Songkran falls on means that daughter will be predicted to carry her father’s head. (Thaisway)

Today, Lady Songkran is also referred to as a beauty contest or selection in which an actress or beauty queen (or several) is selected/hired to play Lady Songkran for that year’s festivities. She is usually involved in the Songkran parades. This year, Miss Universe Runner Up 2023, Anntonia Porsild, will be the first Lady Songkran appointed by the Department of Cultural Promotion for 2024. Im trying to study Thai but i feel like im not making any headway because im stuck with the tones. The book that im using says the alphabet and the tones should be learned together but i just want to move onto vocab and grammar. I know that by doing so i wouldnt build a strong foundation for the language but i just want to understand my bls without relying on subs 😖

Any tips are highly appreciated. Thank you!

Oh god, the tones 😭 I’m still so freakin’ bad at them. The whole reason I got a tutor in the first place was to help me figure out the tones. The thing that has helped me most—aside from strict repetition—is this YouTube video. I rewatch it probably once a week. She has a whole series of tone practice videos which are extremely helpful.

If you have a few extra bucks, I would also recommend booking a lesson with a tutor. I use iTalki and when you sign up they give you 3 trial lessons for super cheap (I think it’s like $6 per lesson). Just tell the teacher you’re a beginner and want to practice your tones. I have severe social anxiety, so I was hesitant to take that step, but I’ve actually really enjoyed it.

As far as whether learning written Thai is necessary, my tutor told me that learning to read/write will help with the pronunciation of unfamiliar vowel sounds, but it’s not really needed if your overall goal is just to understand spoken Thai. I actually elected to learn both spoken and written Thai and I honestly don’t think the written Thai has helped my speaking at all. I would definitely prioritize vocab and grammar first.

Resources I have used include: Ling app, Mondly app, Pimsleur, and the Thai Pod 101 course on Udemy. For basic vocab and grammar that you can study alone, I would recommend Ling—it’s basically Duolingo, but for Thai. That’s what I did first and it gave me a strong base for everything else. Like you, I also tried several textbooks, but for a Westerner, I think it’s almost impossible to learn Thai that way. You really need to hear what the words sound like.

All of that to say that I wouldn’t let the tones discourage you because I can usually figure out what people are saying using context clues. So even if you can’t speak the tones appropriately, you should still be able to watch a show and understand what they’re saying.
