This is literally a microscopic fandom that I’m not even in anymore, but I am a little sad that the first thing that comes up when you google Bobby is that he’s gay. And also, that that’s the only line google displays.

Like yes, I am aware that it’s from an LGBT wiki (I think the top result should be the show wiki or something), and I’m aware that Bobby’s character arc focuses mainly around him coming out to himself and exploring his sexuality, and I’m aware that representation is important. (I’m bi, trust me, I’m thirsting for good representstion)

But like. i don’t know. I just don’t like it that they boiled this nuanced character down into just “a gay character.”

If you're looking for a diverse cast and queer representation this is the show for you. It currently has 2 seasons and needs your views to get a 3rd. And we NEED a third because there's so many cliffhangers and I'll die if I don't have conclusions.

If you liked One Day At A Time, Boy Meets World, Girl Meets World, Andi Mack, and even High School Musical The Musical The Series you'll love this show!

So here's why you should watch the show:

1) The main character is a young Latina girl named Elena. She is strong, intelligent, and highly independent with big dreams and goals. She wants to be President of the United States, which she achieves in the future and the show shows how she gets there. She's a great role model character for young girls because she's very goal driven, passionate, and ambitious but she's not perfect. She messes up sometimes and makes mistakes, but she bounces back every single time. She's just the kind of leading lady that yound tv needs right now.

2) Bobby is officially my all time favorite gay character. When you first meet him he's the typical cool older brother who is captain of his tennis team and likes a girl. But after some self reflection while having a girlfriend he realizes that he may like his new guy friend more than his girlfriend. Disney FINALLY has a show that accurately shows the struggles of discovering your sexuality and finding the courage to own it, accept it, love it, and come out to those you love about it. Bobby's journey of discovering his sexuality has been so beautifully done, the writers really just NAILED it. And to top it off we get an ACTUAL coming out where he actually says the words "I'm gay". Disney is getting brave and we love to see it!

3) And there's MULTIPLE queer people in this show. From the mom's best friend and her girlfriend, to the mom's co-worker, to Elena's classmate having two moms. There's so much representation to show that queer people exsist in everyone's day to day lives and its NORMAL.

4) The show does such a good job of representing a latinx family as well as including other cultures

4) The mom, Gabby, starts dating a coworker, Sam. She hasn't dated anyone since losing her husband a few years ago. Its an adjustment for her and the kids, who aren't the most accepting from the start. They show the struggles of one of your parents dating someone new and does a great job showing how hard it can be to accept but ultimately how great it could work out in the end.

5) The show isn't scared to talk about a bunch of different, important, topics. From friendships ending, to what it means to work in politics, to liking boys, to not judging people based off rumors or appearances, to the consequences of trying to grow up too fast, and so much more.

So please, GO WATCH THE SHOW! It's the exact kind of show that needs to be on tv right now. From the diverse cast, to the accurate queer representation, to the important topics they touch on with no fear. This show deserves a season 3, and hopefully more seasons after that!

I’m finishing up my doafp rewatch rn in preparation for doafp s2, and like,,, how tf did I miss how gay Bobby was even before the whole bargain bin 7 minutes in heaven game scene?? Like, idk if it’s because I wanted to date Bobby myself (I never see characters who play my sport- plus he’s a sweetheart) or my gaydar subscription didn’t get auto renewed, but I was b l i n d.

sure!! :) Just did it for his family for now. also, this is my first headcanon for doafp, so it might not be completely in character

Bobby practices in front of the mirror for a long time until one day, he suddenly says “I’m gay,” and it’s scary but so relieving. 

Although things with Liam are somewhat back to normal, Bobby notices how awkward and jittery he gets when they’re alone together. He really wants to tell Liam, but can’t figure out how (because it didn’t go as planned last time). 

Elena ends up accidentally being the first person he tells. She finds him rehearsing a speech in the bathroom. “Stroking your ego again?” she teases, but something is off with Bobby. Instead of teasing back, he mutters, “None of your business.” // That’s when Elena knows that something’s wrong. 

Later that day, Elena confronts him on the tennis courts where he is hitting balls as hard as he can across the net. “What are you doing here?!” // Elena shrugs, “I dunno, what are you doing?” // “Ugh, you’re so annoying!” But he’s hiding a smile. // “Seriously though, are you okay?” // “I’m just….what if I’m not who I thought I was?” // “I think that it takes a long time to find out who you are, and even when you think you know, you still discover new things.” // “And…what if I need to tell someone something? But I just can’t.” // “As mom once said, when something is hard to say, you really need to say it.” // 

They spend awhile chilling on the court, drinking some apple juice boxes that Elena had. Out of nowhere, Bobby says, “I’m gay.” // Elena looks surprised, but proud. She nudges his shoulder, smirking, and says, “Chill.”

He tells Sam and his mother next after school one day. “I like someone,” he blurts out, causing them both to turn his way. He continues, “You know when I had that fight with Liam? I–it wasn’t because of tennis, it was because I-I think I like him, as in, more than friends.” Sam smiles and pats him on the back. His mom smiles as well, pulling him into a strong hug. “I’m so proud of you. But you know what this means? We have to get another binder for talk 2.0.”

Brandon Severs Jr who plays Liam on Diary of a Future President liked this tweet and many others that confirm that Bobby is in fact gay. There are also tweets from one of the shows writers discussing how being queer has impacted his life and Brandon replied that he was happy that he got to tell a bit of that story which suggests that Liam will be Bobby’s supportive straight friend. A fan made a post about that interaction which led the writer to pour cold water on the idea of Bobby and Liam being canon fwiw. Brandon clearly does ship Bobby and Liam though and has hyped up ep 7 so there should be some nice moments between them even if they’re platonic. It looks like Disney is barely promoting doafp which is a real shame since it is actually a pretty good show with lots of rep. If you liked Andi Mack I think you’d love doafp and should check it out, it looks like it will soon have its own Cyrus Goodman type story line and who knows maybe one day it will have its own Tyrus
