Bolitoglossa mexicana, Rio Negro Honduras
Bolitoglossine salamanders are usually arboreal salamanders, which are often found on leaves and tree trunks after rains. They are also sometime found in epiphytic bromeliads, ferns, and other plants.
Bolitoglossines are in the family Plethodontidae, the lungless salamanders. They respirate through the skin and the lining of their mouths. This genus is also referred to as the “mushroom tongued salamanders”. They use that distinctive tongue, by shooting it out, almost chameleon style, to grab small invertebrate prey, and pull it back into their mouths.
These salamanders have 2 distinct foot types that help them climb trees and other plants:  1. heavily webbed (like the salamander pictured above) or 2. long thin toes. They are also capable of tail autonomy and regrowth.
This genus (Bolitoglossa) is found only in the American tropics, concentrated mostly in Central America. 1/5 of all salamander species are in this genus, making Central America a major diversity hotspot for salamanders (behind only the Appalachian Mountain region and Pacific Northwest of North America).
This is absolutely one of my favorite groups of animals!

🍮🍄🌤️Kanto Amphibian Redesigns🌤️🍄🍮 We conclude this cluster of Kanto Redesigns with some Amphibians. Creative liberties and inspirations galore, Jigglypuff, Lickitung and Dratini join the line up!! Jigglypuff is now based on the Desert Rain Frog, the ones known for being small, round and having a high-pitched yell. I took the liberty of using its Japanese name: "Purin" (Pudding) as the main inspiration, but changed up the colors to make it more of a Punchy Cherry Pudding. Lickitung is based on the Salamander species: "Bolitoglossa" or the Mushroom-tongued Salamander. I wanted to make its color palette a bit more interesting and gave it a reason for not being so abundant in Kanto, the reason being that it is overhunted by several natural predators, this being so rampant that it isn't even safe in the Safari Zone. It's a really sad lil buddy. Dratini is still a Tiny Dragon, not really daring. It is still learning to control weather like its evolutions, and uses its small cloud as a safety blanket. It is easily distracted by shiny things, but it has great potential. These will be the last for a bit~!! Hope y'all like what's gonna come, as we're moving on to evolutions!! 71/151

Up on the Baru Volcano in Panama lives the Endangered Magnificent web-footed salamander (Bolitoglossa magnifica) and @losnaturalistas are doing a great work on studying, monitoring and planning conservation on this rare and endemic species of this volcano. It only lives THERE, into oak forests among mosses and small bromeliads of low and premontane habitats which are now almost entirely isolated by similar ones by farms, roads and fires. Living on a volcano forest is already a dangerous business, let’s not make things worse with our actions! #amphibian #conservation #panama #baruvolcano #salamander #magnifica #bolitoglossa #forest #wideangle #photography #mountain #volcano @goherpingpanama @ilcp_photographers https://www.instagram.com/p/B8L_kM7KaAm/?igshid=1npbmeysz66ga

Mushroom tongue salamander. These amazing critters native to #Guatemala and #Hondras are unfortunately #endangered due to habitat loss. Huge thank you to #herpetologist @myfrogcroaked for his work with @frogrescue helping salamanders and other at risk #amphibians (all amphibians), and for permission to use some of his beautiful photos for painting reference. . #plethodontidae #bolitoglossa #herpsofig #herpetology #mushroomtonguesalamander #Nogodsbutnature #nocturnal #nocturnalanimals #watercolor #gouache #silverleaf #saints #iconography #moon #darkart #night #illustration #sciart #natureart #nationalparks #wildlife #science #biology #rescue #animals #portraiture https://www.instagram.com/baylaart/p/BwmXS6kBJQs/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=pbfsauj9rfve

Jackson's climbing salamander (Bolitoglossa jacksoni) is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to Guatemala. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It is threatened by habitat loss. The salamander is among the 25 "most wanted lost" species that are the focus of Global Wildlife Conservation's "Search for Lost Species" initiative, as it had not been seen since 1975. It was rediscovered in 2017 at an amphibian reserve in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes.
A species of salamander that hasn't been seen since 1975 has been rediscovered alive and kicking in Guatemala.
The juvenile Jackson's climbing salamander (Bolitoglossa jacksoni), also known as the "golden wonder" for its glorious colouring, was spotted by Finca San Isidro Amphibian Reserve guard Ramos León while on patrol at the edge of the reserve. He took a photo and sent it to Carlos Vasquez, curator of herpetology at USAC University in Guatemala, who confirmed the species.
It's only the third individual ever seen. The first two were discovered in 1975 by two students, Paul Elias and Jeremy Jackson. It was hiding under bark in the cloud forest of the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes in western Guatemala.
