i’m deleting all of the posts i’ve made about this topic cos i’m done talking about it. final thoughts:
- calling an israeli person a zionist when it is warranted is not antisemitism. absolutely call out zionists for being nasty fucks
- antisemetism is in regards to people of jewish ancestry and ethnicity, not just religion. but you are right in saying that not all israeli citizens are jewish, and that was ignorant of me for making that broad of a claim.
that’s all. all in all, please continue to boycott zionist organizations and continue to demand a ceasefire in the gaza strip. 30,000 lives have been lost in gaza, an exorbitant amount of them children. the idf needs to be dismantled and the israeli government needs to be reformed. palestine needs to be free.

I’ve been far more vocal about palestine on twitter than here but please do not turn a blind eye, interact, spread awareness it’s easy. If it makes you uncomfortable than good, I’m glad, this is horrific situation there’s nothing comfortable about it so do something, do as much as you can!! Don’t simply be a bystander, even the smallest amount can go a long way!
If it’s lack of knowledge, here’s a couple of resources that have been made as a starting point (sharing what I’ve rted from twitter)
-
There are boycotts going on as well, which I’ll name a few major ones but please look into this if you can. Also "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" refers to the fact that every corporation is flawed, & low income people sometimes cannot avoid things like shopping at walmart or using amazon. it does not refer to u being unwilling to give up your $7 lattes from starbucks” (I have quoted a specific tweet here that sums up “consumption under capitalism” well in imo, as I myself am struggling to find the right phrasing)
Brands to Boycott (Starbucks & McDonalds are already being affected—keep it up):
McDonalds, Starbucks, Disney, Pepsi, Coke, Airbnb, Amazon, American Airlines, Bath and Body Works, Delta Airlines, Google, Netflix, Tesla, Walmart, Zoom
-
Here is a safe donation link that works off add revenue, all you need to do is click!! (there was misinformation spread about it’s legitimacy by a zionist, it is a valid source of support if you cannot donate money!)
-
I’m losing track of everything I wanted to put here so I’ll end with this—being anti-zionist and supporting palestine is NOT being antisemitic, it’s being ANTI-FACIST and not standing for warcrimes!! This is not a dispute between religion, it never has been.

okay, see this? this is what we are NOT going to do.
Tumblr media
1. anti-zionism does not mean anti-semitism. you can oppose the actions of the israeli government and its supporters while still supporting jewish people. you can oppose the genocide of palestinians while also opposing bigotry and calls for genocides of jewish people. imperialism is bad, bigotry is bad, genocide is bad. anyone who perpetrates these concepts, regardless of demographics, should be held accountable. however, blaming every jewish person for these concepts because they’re jewish is antisemitic.
2. supporting palestine does not, and should never mean, anti-semitism. it does not mean calling for genocide in response to genocide.
3. while opposing the israeli govt’s actions and the genocide of palestinians, we also need to be aware to the fact that not everyone who says they support palestine does so out of a desire for peace or anti-colonialism. there are literal, actual nazis who claim to support palestine, not because they want to see it liberated for the sake of the palestinian people, but because they hate jewish people. this is why I do not use the slogan “from the river to the sea”- while some people who use this slogan do so because they’re calling for a palestinian state where people of all religions and ethnicities can live freely, some people intend to use it as a dogwhistle calling for the genocide of israeli civilians. I know where I stand in regards to colonialism and civilian life, and I don’t want my sentiments to be misconstrued.
continue to support palestine. pressure your elected officials for a ceasefire, boycott, demonstrate, educate yourself, share credible information, donate to reputable organizations when you can. but do NOT use genocide as an excuse to justify bigotry, or try to justify bigotry at all.

stop conflating jewish people with zionists.
jews and zionists are not the same! the zionists that are killing the innocent civilians in gaza and the rest of palestine + some parts of lebanon and syria and carrying out the genocide are the same zionists that are killing palestinian jews. this is not something related to religion - the goal of zionism is to completely wipe out every palestinian (no matter what their religion is) and to get rid of the idea that there was a country named palestine at all.
"Jewish Voice for Peace is an anti-Zionist left-wing Jewish activist organization in the United States that supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel."
reminder: jews =/= zionists!

Foreign media is now highlighting the boycott of products believed to be linked to Israel. This is no exception in Indonesia.
Singaporean media Channel News Asia (CNA), for example, made a special analysis of the ongoing boycott. A special article was written with the title "Analysis: A war of opinions brewing in Malaysia and Indonesia over the impact of anti-Israel boycotts".
Also highlighting Indonesia's neighbor, Malaysia, it was mentioned how a number of companies were affected by the boycott. Such as McDonald's, KFC, Starbucks, Pizza Hut to Burger King.
Grab was also targeted, after screenshots circulated of posts by CEO Anthony Tan's wife, Chloe Tong, regarding support for Israel. Tong said he "completely fell in love" with Israel because of his past visits.
However, unlike Malaysia, the impact in Indonesia is said to be invisible. A number of media monitoring even stated that business was still running normally.
"In Indonesia, although netizens have encouraged a boycott of products produced by companies suspected of being pro-Israel, the situation on the ground has not reflected this because there is still skepticism about the real impact of these actions," wrote the media, quoted Thursday (9/11/2023).
"Business is still going on as usual at some Starbucks and McDonald's outlets in Jakarta, as seen by CNA, and one expert noted that the Boycott-Divestment-Sanctions (BDS) movement has not received much attention in the country," he added explaining the boycott, divestment movement and sanctions to pressure Israel to comply with international law, initiated by Palestine.
Citing visiting researcher at the ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore Made Supriatma, CNA wrote how "the success of the BDS movement" is still limited in Indonesia. Moreover, domestic political issues are still a top priority.
"Even though the public may be sympathetic to the Palestinian cause, their attention and involvement seems to be more focused on domestic issues that directly affect their daily lives," said Made.
"One of them is the upcoming general election," he stressed, referring to the Indonesian presidential election published in the media.
He said that although there was a boycott of McDonald's, for example, many consumers did not seem to be aware of it. Due to this, the outlets continued to operate normally without any noticeable decrease in customers.
"This shows that the success of boycotts can vary greatly based on factors such as consumer awareness, local ownership, and brand perception," CNA quoted him as saying.
The same thing was also published by Hong Kong media, South China Morning Post (SCMP). The media wrote an article entitled "Anti-Israel boycotts in Indonesia hit McDonald's, Pringles, as Malaysians quit Singapore's Grab over war in Gaza".
"The boycott list has been circulating on Facebook and TikTok Indonesia for weeks, naming 121 brands that claim to be affiliated with Israel," he wrote.
"However, not all Indonesians support the boycott, amidst warnings about the unification of the Jewish religion as a whole with the actions of the Israeli state," the media added.
It should be noted that in an Al Jazeera report in 2018, it was revealed that the boycott movement has the potential to result in losses of up to US$11.5 billion or around Rp. 183.37 trillion per year for Israel. However, according to data from a non-profit organization based in Washington, United States (US), the Brookings Institution, the BDS movement will not drastically affect the Israeli economy.
This is because around 40% of Israel's exports are "intermediate" goods or hidden products used in the production process of goods elsewhere, such as semiconductors. Additionally, about 50% of Israel's exports are "differentiation" or non-substitutable goods, such as specialized computer chips.

gods sometimes I hate that I can't think about Palestine, about everything going on in the world, 24/7.
I ask myself "well why not? why not just think about that stuff and school and chores? why does fUCKING FANDOM and special interests eat your life and personality like this? don't you have any empathy?"
and I know the answer. I know its because there have been MANY times in my life where I've taken my own advice and tried to think about "the issues" 24/7. I became a total asshole. angry, stupid, often self-destructive. I didn't make any change or contribution besides starting fights with strangers online, and any effort I DID make to contribute irl just led to so many messes that the people who were actually helping then had to step aside and clean up.
the times I'm most capable of help are when I'm able to keep a balance between awareness of the problems in the world, with other stuff (both fandom and just like... homework n shit). it feels SO wrong and SO un-natural to actively prioritize fandom, but I've tried the "right" way so much and been such a dick and done a good bit of harm.
and I've tried the "wrong" way this past year and done more good/participated more than ever.
results speak for themselves.
and ik everyone does activism differently.
I'm obviously not gonna break any boycotts, holy shit no. I'm still attending protests and making posters/art for local activist movements and doing what I can when I can.
its just so tempting to put 99.99999% of myself into REALLY feeling that grief and rage and helplessness... but again. I know, yknow?
I know how that ends. I may feel righteous and empathetic and, honestly, Cool(tm), but I'm not doing shit for anyone
if mainlining destiel into my brainstem lets me show up for protests and make art and do all of that while NOT being a total bag of dicks...
ugh. it just feels fucking weird
(& yes, I did try the "really feel it, no self-anesthetizing with fandom and no distancing myself from it on purpose" approach as recently as this fall. after physically forcing myself to not send threats to kill strangers' pets, exposing my unmasked face to cameras while chalking a govt building, being kinda socially inappropriate and considering vandalism, i realized that it does in fact still make me an asshole.)
like I feel guilty about purposefully distancing myself for these issues, but also simultaneously understand from past experience that this is the best way for me to make actual, meaningful contributions. its weird.
if i go full-in on Understanding(tm) it, I FEEL morally/spiritually superior, and sure, it MIGHT make me a better activist, but years of experience tell me that, despite how I'm perceiving myself in that moment, it wont.
if I keep distancing myself, ie LITERALLY PURPOSEFULLY seeking out fandom/yt brainrot/Shiny Happy Things to AVOID thinking about it, I do more. I'm involved more, go to more protests, meetings, talk to friends about it.
...that is the reverse of how those things should work.
I think this may be the same kind of reason I don't do existentialism or organized religion. there are some things, really deep or emotional things, that if I think abt them too hard I get stuck EXTREMELY far up my own ass in how I can "only" think of these things or else I'm "awful"
but that's it. its all just thinking. and feeling. and not acting.
...I guess I'll go back to obsessing over my little shows and ships, making actual contributions to anti-genocide, anti-colonialism, pro-palestine efforts
and wondering why the FUCK I'm like this.
...also ok tbh my desire for some kind of moral or spiritual depth/fulfillment/righteousness/forgiveness???? via immersing myself in the experience of VICTIMS OF ONGOING GENOCIDE to try to understand their experience is uhhh
creepy.
especially given that its at the direct detriment of my actual activism and to the emotional harm of peers and fellow activists.
yeah hm actually that is just kind of creepy. and not helpful.

Hater Comments- Alex Bensky's Anti-Arab Racism
Every fandom has its share of racists, bigots, or prejudiced people. The irony is that sports are very diverse. When it comes to international competition athletes are from various nations and have different religious backgrounds. Alex Bensky appears to be vexed that Israel's racism was mentioned in a post about Dana Shemesh. She is Israel's first IFBB pro. That is a wonderful accomplishment, but you cannot ignore that the country has engaged in human rights abuse. Alex Bensky Anti-Arab racism went on full display.
“Only when Israel lets go of its ethno-religious racism and accepts the Palestinian people can the entire Middle East have peace.”
This is a gratuitous and as it happens untrue insertion in what should be a mini-biography of a sports figure. The racist charge is just silly, even absurd–half the Israeli Jewish population is descended from Jews who fled Arab lands after 1948 and are physically no different from Arabs.
And given the insistence of Palestinian Arabs, whose history as a distinct people dates back to the early 1960s, that in their future state no Jew will be allowed to live, it’s a little curious that somehow it’s Israel that is “ethno-religious” and the people who believe in ethnic cleansing (and in Hamas’ case genocide) label the other side in such terms.
As the Abraham Accords have shown, not only is the Israel-Palestinian Arab conflict not key to peace in the Middle East, but also that if Israel disappeared tomorrow there would be no shortage of continued Middle East conflict….look at Syria, for example. Other Arabs are finally getting tired of sheer rejectionism dating back nearly a century, never with even a counter offer.
Tell us about Dana Shemesh and put the political stuff elsewhere."
Nowhere did I accuse Dana of racism or hate of the Arab peoples. She did serve in the IDF, but she had no influence over government policy or the wars of aggression waged by her state. Alex here clearly distorts history and international affairs. Israel during the Six-Day War took the West Bank, Gaza Strip, the Golan Heights, and the Sinai peninsula. Sinai was only given back with the Camp David Accords. Israel refuses to go back to the 1967 borders. It invaded Lebanon in 1978 and 1982. It occupied the country between 1985 to 2000. When the state came into existence it forced Palestinians off their land creating a series of refugee camps in neighboring Arab states. The PLO became a resistance organization attempting to stop colonization. The Arab-Israeli War, the Six Day War, the Yom Kippur War, and the invasions of Lebanon were examples of the desire for Israeli expansion. Currently, there are plans to make more settlements in the West Bank. Bensky ignores this history and the plight of the Palestinians. He ignores the fact that Druze Arabs that live in the country face discrimination and that anti-black racism is also policy. The mistreatment of the Ethiopian and Eritrean population has been well documented. There were attempts to prevent Ethiopian Jews from getting citizenship.
Tumblr media
Another issues also emerges in this discussion. Treating Jews as a monolith is antisemitic. The notion that every single Jewish person hates Arabs is false. A portion of Israeli citizens have left the country to avoid military service. There are Jews who object to Zionism, because they do not believe it adheres to their religion. Peace activists and liberals want to see an end to violence. Realizing that Israel has become an ethno-religious racist apartheid state does not make a person anti-Jewish. Criticism of Israel is not antisemitic. To make such an assertion is an attempt to stifle free speech and dissent. Alex Bensky knows this. Mentioning Hamas is a deflection, because the group will never be able to defeat Israel. The fact is Israel has engaged in ethnic cleansing of certain areas to make way for farmers.
Tumblr media
This is why the boycott is a threat. The EU is a major market for the country. The Abraham Accords do not address the core issue. There is a country that wants to be an ethno-state in which Jews have more rights and privileges than everyone else. The exclusivity does not stop there. Ashkenazim Jews want to be the group with the most rights in Israel. There is a racial hierarchy being covered by religion. Bensky does not even mention that the United Nations played a role in the disorder in 1947. The Arabs in the region have a history dating back to the ancient world. Most Jews living there at present cannot trace their history back to 1200 B.C.E. I would rather celebrate Dana Shemesh, than celebrate her country.

NEW DELHI —  India is scrambling to contain a diplomatic storm that has erupted in Islamic countries following controversial comments made about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad by two officials of the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Iran and Pakistan have registered protests made by BJP’s national spokesperson during a recent televised debate.
Several of these countries summoned Indian ambassadors to denounce the derogatory statements. Calling the comments “Islamophobic,” Qatar has demanded a public apology from India. The controversy turned particularly embarrassing for India as it erupted while its vice president, Venkaiah Naidu, and business leaders were on a visit to the country.
Denouncing the statement, Saudi Arabia said it “reaffirms its permanent rejection of prejudice against the symbols of the Islamic religion.”
Besides official outrage, anger against the remarks poured out on social media in several Arab nations with some people calling for a boycott of Indian goods.
The influential Organization of Islamic Cooperation said they came in a "context of intensifying hatred and abuse towards Islam in India and the systematic harassment of Muslims." It also cited a decision by some states in India to ban the Muslim headscarf, the hijab, as well as incidents of violence against Muslims.
Rejecting the OIC’s comments as “misleading and mischievous,” the Indian foreign ministry said that the government accords the highest respect to all religions. In a statement, it said that the “offensive” comments and tweets “do not in any manner reflect the view of the government of India” and were made by individuals against whom action has been taken.
The foreign ministry criticized Pakistan, which had also condemned the remarks, calling it a “serial violator of minority rights” and saying that it should not engage in “alarmist propaganda.”
BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who made the remarks, was suspended by the party while Naveen Jindal, the media head of the Delhi party unit, who had tweeted on the issue, was expelled on Sunday.
“The BJP strongly denounces insults of any religious personalities of any religion. The BJP is also against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such people or philosophy," the party said in a statement.
Sharma said on Twitter that there was never any intention to hurt anyone’s feelings and that she spoke in response to comments made about a Hindu god.
Sporadic protests have also erupted in some Indian states as the remarks caused anger among Muslims, who are India’s largest minority, making up 14 percent of the country’s 1.4 billion people.
The remarks are being seen in the context of what critics say is a rise in hate speech targeting Muslims since the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in 2014.
In an editorial, The Indian Express newspaper said, “The truth is that it was no sudden eruption of bigotry. The BJP’s electoral victories since 2014, and especially after 2019, have emboldened party activists and others of the saffron brigade to an extent that they indulge in casual everyday anti-minority actions.” By saffron brigade, the paper was referring to Hindu nationalists.
Political commentators said such controversies could set back India’s effort to enhance ties with Persian Gulf countries, which has been a key focus of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Tens of thousands of Indians work in the UAE and in Gulf countries like Kuwait, and New Delhi is also trying to strengthen trade ties with these nations.
The U.S. State Department, in its latest annual report to the Congress on international religious freedom, named India as among countries that were violators of religious freedom. It alleged that attacks on members of minority communities, including killings, assaults and intimidation took place in India throughout 2021. __________________________
Had to dig around to find out what she said, can't find a quote but it's something about Aisha and her age when Muhammad married her and consummated that marriage.
Not sure which side she took.

Hogwarts Legacy with a Jewish Lens
Additionally, the debate over whether the goblin character has its roots in antisemitism is wholly unaligned with Rowling’s professed views on Jews. In 2004, Rowling visited a Holocaust Museum and compared the hated “mudblood” and “half-blood” terms used in Harry Potter with the antisemitic propaganda of the Nazis: “If you think this is far-fetched, look at some of the real charts the Nazis used to show what constituted Aryan or Jewish blood.” Rowling has also gone on record saying that her evil character—Lord Voldemort—is modeled in part off of Hitler.  Both comments won her comments of praise from Jewish organizations.
-https://momentmag.com/debunking-the-harry-potter-anti-semitism-myth/ [bolding by me]
Getting praised for modelling your villain after Hitler is a low, low bar.
So it’s no secret that in the criticism of the upcoming game Hogwarts Legacy, discussions of antisemitism have come up just as often as transphobia. This is thanks to the promotional material, which heavily teases a ‘goblin rebellion’ as a main part of the game’s plot.
Tumblr media
Actual Jewish criticism of Harry Potter seems to be thin on the ground. Most of what I can find talks about the depiction of the goblins. Other (older) articles talk about Jewish values found in the book series, especially as geared towards an Orthodox audience. Fandom studies focuses on how Jewish fans of the series have worked with Jewish characters and OCs, and how these fans have brought Jewishness into their fandom.
I’m an in-progress Jew by Choice (mikveh date is april ahhh). I’ve long been a student and critic of problematic media, but this is the first time I’m taking my criticism public. Given the apparent heavy focus on Harry Potter’s goblins in this game, Judaism seems like an excellent lens through which to begin this analysis.
There’s a lot to cover beyond goblins as well. Can Jewish wizards fit into Rowling’s universe? [Rowling has confirmed that she imagines many Jewish students at Hogwarts, tho only one is named in the book series, and has very little time or development] How does the world of Harry Potter draw from Jewish persecution for allegory, and what are the implications of doing so? How do the fanbase and auxiliary creators of Harry Potter overlook, excuse, or dismiss [intentional or unintentional] antisemitism? How does antisemitism intersect with the racism found in Harry Potter?
Is there even a place for Jewish characters in a game set in 1890s Britain? Expelled in 1290, Jews were only readmitted in 1655. Debates on Jewish naturalization went back and forth thru the 1700s. In the 1800s, Jews fought against legal exclusion, spearheaded by political leaders like David Salomons, the first Jewish mayor of London [and later an MP]. While this was going on, Jewish leaders were protesting spreading blood libel in Europe. There was also an exodus of Jews escaping the Russian Empire’s brutal pogroms. Many settled in Britain, and a new wave of anti-Jewish immigration sentiments arose.
Full legal emancipation for Jews was not granted until 1858. A number of Jews opposed emancipation, arguing that it would lead to assimilation into British Gentile culture and a loss of Jewish identity.

Congressman John Robert Lewis (February 21, 1940 – July 17, 2020) was a politician and civil rights activist who served in the House of Representatives for Georgia’s 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death. He was the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (1963-66). He was one of the “Big Six” leaders of groups who organized the 1963 March on Washington. He fulfilled many key roles in the civil rights movement and its actions to end legalized racial segregation. In 1965, he led the first of three Selma to Montgomery marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. In an incident that became known as Bloody Sunday, state troopers and police attacked the marchers.
He was born near Troy, Alabama, the third of ten children of Willie Mae and Eddie Lewis. His parents were sharecroppers in rural Pike County, Alabama.
In 1955, he first heard Martin Luther King Jr. on the radio and he followed King’s Montgomery bus boycott. He preached his first public sermon at 15. At 17, he met Rosa Parks and met King for the first time at the age of 18. He credited evangelist Billy Graham, a friend of King’s, as someone who “helped change me”.
After writing to King about being denied admission to Troy University, he was invited to meet with him. King, who referred to him as “the boy from Troy”, discussed suing the university for the discrimination he decided instead to proceed with his education at Fisk.
He graduated from the American Baptist Theological Seminary and was ordained as a Baptist minister. He earned a BA in Religion and Philosophy from Fisk University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.
He was a member of the Democratic Party leadership in the House of Representatives and had served as a Chief Deputy Whip and Senior Chief Deputy Whip.
He was awarded many honorary degrees and was the recipient of numerous awards from eminent national and international institutions, including the highest civilian honor of the US, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
He married Lillian Miles (1948-2012). They had a son. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #phibetasigma

Fit To Be Tied...I Mean Pride
Just when you thought it was safe to be in the field of marketing, the world explodes with manufactured fury over something that has actually been going on for years. But that doesn’t matter, because marketing is now in the crosshairs. All I have to do is say the names “Bud Light” and “Target,” and you know exactly what I mean.
All this in just the last two months.
And because I think it is critically important for my students to give considerable thought to how they might handle crisis communication and marketing in the face of controversy, this summer term I am pushing all y’all—that’s Texan for you guys—into the frying pan. You get to be the team that crafts a marketing response for your pick of these two companies.
For the sake of a quick review, it all started unraveling in early April when Bud Light—owned by the Belgian AB InBev—sent a one-off beer can to Dylan Mulvaney that featured her image. Dylan is a transgender woman and TikTok star. But Bud Light has promoted Pride Month for a long time, and in recent years released rainbow-colored 16-ounce aluminum bottles. It’s just that the hive thought that Bud Light had gone a little far with the Mulvaney thing, and the result being a consumer boycott and a steep 15% or more decline in their stock price.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, and more recently, Target released its in-store support of Pride Month with a large selection of pride-themed merchandise that is featured in a mini-boutique format. Target endured mob scenes in which protesters damaged those in-store displays, as well as organized more boycotts. One item in particular piqued the wrath of conservatives, that being the bikini bottom for TG women so that they might “tuck” and have a better chance of passing. Incorrect rumors spread that there were also versions of this bikini in the kids section.
Tumblr media
While I do not consume Bud Light (I am a beer snob, and I have my standards, you know), they have not missed my “boycott” one bit, simply because I was never on their radar. But Target? Yeah, I know that one better. On a recent very long road trip, I stopped by about a half-dozen Target stores across the nation to see how they were handling the crisis.
One store still had the Pride Month display in the very front of the store, while others had moved it farther back, and in the women’s section. The marketer in me was fascinated, and I’m sure I raised some eyebrows whilst perusing the merch, taking photos, etc.
Consumer boycotts are truly a nickel a dozen these days. While they are not a new phenomenon, they have grown thanks to social media and the increasingly divisive society in which we live. Historically, though, consumer boycotts are a mixed bag in terms of their effectiveness. When it comes to brands and stores, they seldom last more than six months. People either forget or move on to the next object of their rage. Non-profits, though, like the Livestrong Foundation and Susan G. Komen, took big hits after their controversies a decade ago, and have never fully recovered.
Some will argue that companies should never target—bad pun—special interest groups, especially when they are such a minority. While I have long said that companies as well as individuals such as celebrities and sports stars should never mix politics and religion into what they do, I will also argue that many see LGBTQ matters as being about civil rights, not religion, and certainly not politics.
The sad reality, though, is that in our polarized world, you really can alienate 50% of your audience in a heartbeat, even if you are doing the right thing. And remember, that “shoving it down our throats” thing only has meaning when it is something you just don’t like in the first place. If it’s a message with which you agree, then it’s kind of like someone sharing their ice cream cone with you. No problema, right?
According to recent stats, about seven-percent of Americans now identify as LGBTQ. Similarly, about five-percent identify as vegetarian and three-percent as vegan. Tally those two and you have about the same percents of the population. But no one seems to be complaining too much about all those plant-based foods. Well, except for last year when Cracker Barrel announced it was adding the Impossible plant-based sausage patty to its breakfast menu. Die-hard CB fans went ballistic, even though no one was making them eat even one of them.
I suppose if you’re actively looking for something to complain about, it’s not all that hard these days. And marketers are left defending their every move. Companies simply want to serve more segments of the market. And while only seven-percent identify as LGBTQ, there are many more who consider themselves allies and supporters. Have a family member who is gay or TG? Yeah, you might think very differently from the person using their Bible as a cudgel. And maybe you just want to eat a little less meat part of the time? There ya go.
The solution for humankind is really simple: If you don’t like what you’re seeing, then don’t look at it. Don’t touch it. Don’t buy it. Don’t eat it. But please, stop all the knee-jerk boxers-in-a-bunch complaining. And that’s for all y’all (I’ve been working on my Texan). Left or Right, please just calm down and take a deep breath, because you’re not helping matters any. And—this is important here—our culture has shifted, as it always does. Whereas we once used biblical writ to justify subservience of women and holding slaves, we got past that. We need to keep moving along.
It’s just that we marketers are left with egg on our face no matter what, as long as the boycotting mindset continues. It practically guarantees job opportunities in the field, but also long hours putting out fires, and strengthening your resolve not to cave in to the protesters.

Which means please don’t pour any Bud Light on those fires. It’s going to take some creative thinking. And that explains why I have put my MBAs on to this for the summer term. Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines. You have work to do.
