Feliz Carnaval for all QSMP watchers 🎉✨️

I'm not good with explanations but I separated some curious facts and traditions of the brazilian Carnaval for all the non-brazilians who want to know more about our festivities

Though its origin has some Catholic roots, modern Carnaval is a secular party where people go to street festivals dressed up in shiny costumes or beach wear, drink out in the open, watch parades on TV and send their kids to school looking like Miraculous Ladybug.

People who go out to celebrate Carnaval in the street/beach are called "foliões" and the groups where those people aglomerate, usually following a moving performer (ie a singer performing in a vehicle), are called "blocos"

One of our most beautiful traditions is the "desfile das escolas de samba", parades where different groups, called Escolas de Samba (Schools of Samba, not actual schools), compete in an event that includes very intricate cars, costumes and samba (a musical genre). Each school has a theme, usually related to social commentary and elements of our culture

Some states have a costume called "mela-mela" where the foliões throw sticky food at each other, most commonly flour, tho eggs are not unheard of. This is still not the worse thing someone can throw at you when you're out on the streets

Children use the Carnaval to dress up at school, like some kids do on Halloween minus the scary costumes. Superheros costumes are specially popular

Child-friendly Carnaval is famous for the use of confetti and foam spray. Kids go to school all dressed up and paint each other's hair with shitty pink spray

Other brazilians are welcome to add more traditions if I left anything out!

There's a genre of music you hear on Carnaval called "marchinhas". They're short, simple and often full of innuendos. One of the most popular marchinhas is called, in lit translation, "Mommy I want to suck". Yeah.

In general, Carnaval is a moment to break social rules and go wild. Kiss that stranger you just met. Play soccer with your bros wearing a dress. Engage in some petty food fight with a 7 yo. Go to work in cat ears. People will not judge you (that much)

Solarpunk Aesthetic: Brazilian Clay Water Filters

I dithered a lot trying to decide on something to post about for Solarpunk Aesthetic Week, but at the end of the day I'm a Brazilian and I like to talk about Brazilian things... so here are some Brazilian Red Clay Water Filters! These are considered to this day one of the most reliable water purification systems in the world, and used to be very popular in the past all over Brazil before the rise of mineral water coolers in the 90s and early 2000s. The Red Clay keeps the water cool and they use a ceramic candle to filter water.

Nowadays, Red Clay filters live mostly in our memories of Brazil in the 80s or 90s (and in memes like "this represents Brazil more than Samba or caipirinha"), although there has been a bit of revival as design pieces, which is why these pictures are all decorated or integrated with planters. You can still find functional models like this for sale, however. But I believe Red Clay Water Filters belong in a concept of Brazilian Solarpunk for two reasons:

Although I couldn't find sources for the claim, it's widely believed here that this model was created in Brazil, with some speculation that the use of Red Clay and the characteristic shape of the filter originate from the use of red clay in ceramics by different indigenous cultures in Brazil (there is a type of water jug called moringa that evokes the idea of a red clay filter and has been around for centuries)

Brazil has a long history of water insecurity and poor sanitation all over the country, but personally I am more familiar with this issue in Northeast Brazil, where a combination of a challenging environment (especially in the sertão) and historical neglect by the government means the population in the rural areas was constantly facing intense droughts every dry season. In this context, I consider the existence of a reliable system of water filtration an essential aspect of Northeast Brazil's culture of resistance

This got a bit long, but I hope it made for an interesting read for anyone taking part in Solarpunk Aesthetic Week, or who just ended up here by chance. I mostly engage with Solarpunk through original fiction (still unpublished), but because of my introduction to it it's very hard to separate the aesthetic and movement from my own culture. This Christmas Eve I tried to make a Mari Lwyd!

Unfortunately i couldn’t get a complete skull, but was much fun! I hope next year getting the neighbours to participate. Was much fun anyway! Got snacks hihi

Absolutely love this tradition! Being honest, I’m Brazilian, probably 0% Welsh, however, as indigenous, I’ve been seeing traditions and culture dying before my eyes. Mari has been growing popularity lately, I feel like her is a symbol of cultural resistance and perseverance, even not 100% accurate, her memory is very much alive.

I hope I could make justice and respectfully did my own homage to Welsh culture! My special thanks to @becausegoodheroesdeservekidneys for the help and guidance!

The first nights in Brazil were spent in hotels. You wanted to show Ruben around the sights, like the beach and other popular tourist attractions. It was his first time visiting your home country so you wanted to make it special.

Eventually you guys arrived in São Paulo, the city where you grew up. The city where all of your family and friends lived.

"She's home!" Your mother shouted as the car you were renting pulled up to your childhood home.

"Finally God has brought you back to us." She rushed down the driveway to give you a rib crushing hug.

"Mamãe." You groaned. Behind her the rest of the family spilled out of the house, your siblings, cousins, aunties and uncles. All had been awaiting your arrival.

"Y/N!"

"Look how skinny she has become."

"What are they feeding you in England?"

"Fish and chips." Your uncle joked.

"Pai! Come here and look how pale your daughter has become."

People were pinching your cheeks, pulling your dress and making you twirl around to get a better look at you.

"Guys, please."

You hadn't even gotten the chance to introduce them to Ruben yet. There was no need however, your family discovered him for themselves as he came up the driveway carrying all of your luggage.

"Oh my." Your mother gasped.

"Look at those arms." One of your aunties commented. "So strong, so full of veins."

Your sisters were no different. "He's cute, no?"

"Stop it." You hushed.

Ruben certainly made a good impression with the females of your family. The men however, perked up their chests like male gorillas.

"Do you need helped with those?" Your dad said, clearing his throat to make his voice sound deeper.

Ruben shook his head. "No sir. But thank you."

"No. Thank you." Your auntie smiled, eyeing Ruben up and down as he went passed them with the bags.

You rolled your eyes, hooking your arm with Rubens. "Guys this is Ruben , my fiance."

"Fiance?" They frowned.

You had yet told them about Rubens proposal last month. This was one reason for your visit to Brazil.

"When did this happen?" Your mother said, taking your hand so she could get a better look at the ring. Your family gathered like chickens, gasping at the sight of the diamond ring.

"Last month." You smiled.

"And you told us nothing?" Your dad pushed through everyone to get to you, displaying a look disapointment.

"Well I wanted it to be a suprise."

"Normally a man asks the father for permission before proposing to his daughter." Your dad turned to Ruben.

"Pai!"

He stepped up to Ruben in a way that made everyone nervous.

"What? It's a holy tradition, no?"

"Yes for us Pai." Your sisters help defend. "Ruben is not from Brazil."

"But he is Portuguese, no?"

"Here we go again." You sighed. Ever since your family found out that Ruben was Portuguese their view of him changed a bit. Especially your dad's view, since he has always been very in touch with his cultural roots and a preacher of how the white man took everything from our ancestors. Even when you were still a young girl he would say, "If you ever marry a Brazilian he better be as black as you."

"Pai?" Your mother came through to stop the commotion. "Stop this. We haven't seen our daughter in three years. This is not how we should welcome her and her beautiful husband to be."

Your dad groaned in response, but quickly came to his senses, seeing the hurt in your eyes.

"Y/N." He sighed. "You're mother is right, forgive me?"

"It's not me you should be apologizing too." You said, cuddling up to Ruben. He held an arm around your shoulders.

The whole family anticipated your father's next words. He still looked skeptically at Ruben.

"Do you have a job, son?"

"Yes sir." Ruben nodded.

"A house?"

"Two actually. One in England and one in Portugal. If you don't count the apprement we live in Manchester and the summerhouse in Spain, then I have four."

Your family nodded impressed, everyone but your father.

"Can you cook?" He said, continuing the live interrogation.

"I know a few dishes."

"Can you clean?"

"Of course."

"Dad stop this." You sighed.

He raised his hand "Just one final question."

"Shoot." Ruben said.

Your dad chuckled. "It's funny you would say that. Can you play football? Because no son in law of mine shall step foot in my house without knowing how to use them."

Ruben shifted to you. His expression unsure.

"I haven't told them." You smiled.

"Told us what?" Your dad hissed.

"Pai, Ruben is a professional football player. He plays for Manchester City in the Premier League."

"My son." Your dad grinned, pulling Ruben in for a hug.

Everyone laughed, including you.

"I guess he's welcome to the family then?" You asked.

"Yes." He said, patting Rubens back. "He is very welcome."

fun fact 2. he intends to use this power to create some kind of "bozo-verse". a multiverse of clowns

fun fact 3. this actually fits perfectly within the Bozo Mythos and makes as much (if not more) sense as the proliferation of the multiverse in the MCU

(im just including this image because it think the tonal dissonance between the two chosen pictures in that header is fucking hilarious)

so i'm sure most of the people reading this post are zoomers or millenies. and idk about y'all but by the time i came around to human consciousness around 1998 or so, Bozo was part of a long-gone television era, one that belonged to the boomers and Xers before me. i was vaguely aware of him as a residual pop culture entity but never really encountered him myself.

well, as it turns out, there is no true one Bozo.

Bozo the clown was originally created as a character in a children's book in 1946. a voice actor portrayed him in a read-along record to said book and became so popular, Bozo was promoted to Occasional Television Star in 1949. he maintained his popularity and in 1957, the rights to Bozo were sold to a new owner, who decided to syndicate the clown. and this is where the Bozo-verse came in.

because the new owner made Bozo available to lease by smaller local television networks, that meant that dozens of studios across the American continent had their very own Bozo. dozens of Bozos!! from Detroit to Rio de Janeiro to Ontario to Mexico City and several other locations in between, an insane amount of Bozos existed at the same time from the late 1950s to the mid 1970s. and within those dozens of Bozos, some would be portrayed by half a dozen actors during their runs. each were unique, distinguished by their varied performances and variation in costuming. some Bozos lasted longer than the rest- the Brazilian Bozo notably lasted until the early 2010s. but of course, along with the death of the clown as a cultural that started around the 80s, Bozos started falling off the air left and right.

i, Known Clown Appreciator, am genuinely happy that david is wanting to help rehabilitate the clown to a new generation of potential New Clown Appreciators. and i'm not saying he has to, but i am saying i think the world could really use a Spider-Verse style Bozostravaganza of a movie. i think the people are ready and willing to get sillay

Hilda Furacão

- The miniseries tells the story of Hilda Furacão (Ana Paula Arósio), the most desired prostitute in the bohemian area of Belo Horizonte in the 1950s. Daughter of a traditional middle-class family, Hilda scandalized Minas Gerais society by breaking with her family and conventions, running away on her wedding day and taking refuge among prostitutes and transexuals. It is told by the point of view of a writer, since his childhood with his friends Malthus (Rodrigo Santoro, a big faunlet inspo btw), a bona fide seminarian, known by the population as The Saint, and Aramel (Thiago Lacerda) an aspiring Hollywood actor trying to learn English.

Their lives change when they see Hilda for the first time and witness her change from a fearless but rich and traditional lady and model, to the most sought after and scandalous prostitute in the entire city.

After being popularized in the city as the most beautiful and popular prostitute, Hilda is accused of being possessed by demons and Malthus decides to try to exorcise her in the Church square, only to discover that he would not be able to resist Hilda's charms, she would become his greatest object of desire and guilt.

This story is full of sensuality, anguish, Catholic guilt and other popular tropes on the community, if you like erotic dramas and thrillers, you will love it, and if you like vintage fashion, you will love it even more. If you are from a Spanish-speaking country you can most likely find the series on the internet, as it was super popular throughout Latin America, and if you speak English, I can make some episodes available via google drive, however the person who subtitles the episodes is translating one at a time, so be patient, maybe the wait will leave you wanting more ;)

I decided to make a series of posts giving recommendations about brazilian coquette/faunlet media, i felt that something about Brazil was missing, im very proud if my country's culture and media and think that it should be spread and appreciated more.
