Legendborn x Challengers Redraw
Breeselnick edition!
Tumblr media
As both a huge Legendborn and Zendaya fan, I knew once I saw the trailer that I wanted to draw this scene.
I don’t know if I’ve ever commented on my views on the love triangle on this account, but fundamentally I am team Bree and don’t care who she ends up with, but I am fond of the idea of the trilogy ending with them as throuple. I just want them all to be happy!
Also I gave Bree her little gray hair streaks!
Anyway I suck at backgrounds so sorry for how dull it looks.

Bloodmarked Character Analysis and Opinions: Selwyn Kane
Spoilers ahead!
1. Sel's development from the first novel to now is *chef's kiss*. He is a flawed character who is always willing to admit when he is wrong. His apology and explanation for is actions during LB in chapter 37 were absolutely heart wrenching. I loved it vulnerability and honesty.
2. Selwyn has come a long way from the boy who didn't know how to ask to be Nick's friend or ask Nick to be his. He expresses his feelings for Bree and makes it clear that his priority is her happiness, even if that isn't with him.
3. Sel's relationship with Nicholas is beautiful but so complicated. It is clear they care for each other more than either of them wish to admit, but it is also so hard to move beyond the hurt and betrayal both of them have inflicted on the other. Both of them have abused their bond at some point or another. But they have also been at each other's sides for almost a decade (it's 8 years. Sel was 10 and Nick was 9 when they were oathed.) Sel knows Nick better than anyone else on the planet and vice versa but that type of bond and knowledge breeds resentment and pain, especially with the immense pressure both of them shoulder. The two are inextricably linked. In LB we find out that Sel had a crush on Nick when they were younger and when Bree asks him about it in BM, he says, "I don't think that's in the cards for me... if I allowed myself that wish, it would be something. Wishes are a dangerous game we play with ourselves and the only way to win is not to play." I took this to mean, he will not allow himself to love Nick in that way because he thinks it cannot work out. But before that, he stated that he feels safer and more whole with Nick. I really love the complexity of their relationship and I hope to get more of it in the next book.
4. Let's talk Sel's magic. For a large portion of this book. Sel had Void Cuffs on and could not call aether. Shortly after Bree breaks the cuffs, she is badly injured, and Sel uses his magic to do something unprecedented. He holds Bree together. He holds her organs, nerves, and blood vessels together for 3 hours until William can get to them. William himself says that what he did was incredible and would have killed another Merlin. My question is what gives Selwyn the ability to do that? Why is he special? I think it's because of Bree's root! When he does this he is still under the affects of Bree sharing her root with him. We've seen Bree's root have lasting effects on Alice (mesmer resistance). And we've been told that as demons consume aether they become more powerful. So it makes sense that with root flowing through him he'd be able to do something that should have been impossible. Bree also willingly shared her root with him and I think the reason it didn't cause him to succumb then is just that. Consent. When Bree shares her root, it strengthens Sel. When he takes it in the bloodwalk, it causes him to succumb to his blood. These are just my theories but I'm excited to see if Deonn chooses this route for the story.
5. Sel's mother. We know so little of Natasia Kane but I think she will be a major player in the next book with Sel's humanity on the line. I also think we might find out that Erebus is Selwyn's father. Erebus hinted to a relationship with Natasia and has a soft spot for Sel. Whether that is due to him being his father or if it is because of his relationship with Natasia, I'm not sure but I hope to find out.
I absolutely adore him and I pray he ends up ok

"Nick, short for Nicholas.” I startle, and see her again. Bree, the girl who can see aether and defeat mesmers. I know when she looks at me with determination flashing in her eyes that she managed to keep her memories of last night. She defeated Sel’s mesmer. For the first time in years hope rises in my chest when I think of my mother. Still, the Genetics 201 lecture hall is too public of a place to openly talk about the order. I attempt to focus on the professor instead of the wonder that is Bree Matthews.
“I made myself remember” she hisses, her warm breath next to my ear feels almost too close.
“Remember what?” I ask, barely keeping the smile off my lips.
We work on the pretest together. Bree’s good at this stuff. Despite not even being in the class, she understands the content better than me. Despite everything that happened yesterday, Bree makes me feel normal. The weight of being Author’s scion, everything with my mother, Sel, the order, it just disappears. I feel myself getting pulled into this feeling more and more, and it’s intoxicating. I wonder if this is what Sel feels when he’s aether-drunk.
Bree shoves a piece of notebook paper into my hands. Merlin, Legendborn, mesmer and more are scribbled across it, and the spell breaks. As much as I would love to pretend otherwise, I’m not normal. This world is dangerous, and I cannot drag Bree into it.
“You are going to stop asking questions and move on with you semester, because this conversation is over. I’m sorry Bree, but that’s final” I brace myself for her reaction, for that determined light in her eyes to fall.
Instead, she laughs. “This isn’t over. I don’t know who you think you are, but you can’t tell me what to do” Bree whispers.
And then she’s walking out the door, like she didn’t completely change my world after knowing me for less than 24 hours. I feel something stuck in my throat and bring my arm up to cover the cough. In my hand lies rose petals.
Roses are for romantic love, bravery, and admiration. A bit cliché but I think it matches Nick really well lol.
In this universe, coughing up flowers happens when you love someone and have yet to confess. After confessing, the disease is no longer fatal (although it can persist if the love was not requited). The flowers can be just a sweet symbol like it is here, or it can be painful depending on how requited one thinks their love is. I was gonna do this for Bree and Sel too but this is feeling a bit long for a tumblr post, so I’m gonna leave it here. I’ll have the ones for Bree and Sel up soon!

I no longer ship breeselnick because Sel has some serious issues not only with his attitude but with how he talks to ppl, especially Bree. He needs a therapist almost just as much as Bree does. That boy is so toxic. I want to punch him for Bree.

y’all going crazy over throuple ot3 breenselnick … how is that even possible. Like how can u ship it knowing the relationship between sel and nick. It’s just toxic imo and I’ve never gotten the appeal like. Also I’ve seen mainly white legendborn stans saying this and some going as far as to say sel and nick should just be together… it’s rubbing me the wrong way and lowkey some of y’all are giving fetishy and anti-black. Anyway the only thing that could get me on board with the throuple is some major development between nick and sel and until that happens I will continue being a throuple hater .

Legendborn Beach Day!!!!
Okay, so I know this isn’t my best work and it looks a little unfinished, but I wanted to post something in honor of the Oathbound announcement and the news that we are getting four books!
I actually started this piece in July back when I actually could go to the beach, then I just forgot about it for a while. Oops
I really hope that they are all safe, happy, and healthy when the series ends. These kids have gone through so much, I really just wanna see they get a break and finally be able to relax and be kids.

How ‘IRON WIDOW’ by Xiran Jay Zhao changed my reading experience
I’ll be straightforward: I’m in love with ‘Iron Widow’ since *checks notes* May, when I read it, and it’s now my life’s purpose to make everyone else as in love with it as I am.
First of all, I’d like to say that I don’t usually consume media with sci-fi aspects, action, mecha suits, that kind of thing. I was a follower of Xiran and watched their videos analysing Asian (and Asian-inspired) media, such as Mulan, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra, Netflix’s Over The Moon etc. I also happen to find Xiran’s voice very soothing, so there’s that. So, when they mentioned that they were writing a book, I was interested, especially putting that it was polyamory and a historical reimagining. When I got around to requesting the publishers (thank you so much, Penguin Teen Canada!) for an ARC and reading it... well, it was just game changing.
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to read a book with a love triangle that doesn’t end up with all of them in love with each other again. Of course, as a polyamory person, I’d already considered that as an option and I’d already asked (more like begged, actually) for more media with this concept, but I hadn’t actually seen it until now (I am going to need Tracy Deonn to follow in Xiran’s footsteps and make BreeSelNick endgame, by the way). I had considered it an option before, but since I’d never seen it happen, I unconsciously made myself believe that such a thing wasn’t allowed. ‘Iron Widow’ was here to tell me that it doesn’t matter if it’s allowed, because you can take it. I exist, and seeing myself represented is something I can claim as mine.
Another thing this book delivered flawlessly was unhinged women. The internet keeps talking about people written by men or by women, but I’m here for something else: people written by Xiran Jay Zhao. Wu Zetian wields her rage fearlessly, she’s shady and ruthless. Her moral compass is messy. I’ve waited for a character like her my whole life, but hadn’t known it until she’d been given to me on a silver platter. No, it’s better than that: given to me on a document sent to my e-mail, then to my Kindle, like most delightful things are.
Not only did Xiran give me Wu Zetian, though, but on my Kindle silver platter, there was also Gao Yizhi and Li Shimin, her outstanding love interests. While Li Shimin fits the tormented bad boy criteria (but better, because that’s just what Xiran does, makes good things better), Gao Yizhi would fit the rich good boy one (yes, eat-the-rich-romantically trope!). But while he is kind and nice, we’re led to believe that there is something dark in him, though maybe his morals aren’t as messy as Zetian’s. Their dynamic can probably be described as Bonnie, Clyde, and their househusband. Perfection, truly.
The plot is also marvellous, including the oppression at the core of the system, how dirty the powerful people play to get what they want, as well as realistic plot twists. Something I liked, too, was the way Xiran Jay Zhao dealt with the action in the book: I’m usually not all for action-packed books, but the way Xiran did it pulled me in. It’s intense and involves a lot of emotion, something that usually lacks action scenes (one of the reasons why I don’t like them all that much).
The way trauma is handled in ‘Iron Widow’ is spectacular, too. There are all sorts of these included, from family trauma to ones caused by alcoholism (I’d disclose more on that, but I’m not sure how spoilery that would be), and it doesn’t show only the “pretty” part of it: we get to see the anger that’s so often played in a way as to make the traumatised person feel guilty and the lashing out.
Besides, ‘Iron Widow’ has everything: hate-to-love? Yup. Friends to lovers? Absolutely! Fake dating/arranged marriage? You bet! Overthrowing the government? 100% yes! That’s basically the plot of the book. Femme fatale trope where a character seduces, then kills a man? Again, that’s basically the (initial) plot. Forbidden/secret relationship? Lots of it. Morally gray characters? Basically all of them are. Fighting while injured and not 100% healthy yet? Mhm. Intense fights with giant, magic mecha suits inspired by mythology? I got you (Xiran does, actually)! Plot twists? YES! One party of the relationship finding a way to help/save their loved one from a dangerous situation that was almost impossible to do so? Yes!!!!
If all my gushing wasn’t enough for you to pre-order this book or add it on your TBR, then... get help. But fear not! Becuase I’ll definitely post more about this book! (Maybe not here on Tumblr, but I have an account on Twitter 100% dedicated to it, so...) Because I’m obsessed with it! ‘Iron Widow’ releases in NINE DAYS, on September 21st, so make sure to check it out! Or else Wu Zetian won’t come for you! And believe me, you want her to.

I finished reading Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn two days ago. Here are my thoughts overall:
Small spoilers at the end!
1. It was incredible. It was an emotional roller-coaster with twists and surprises at every turn. I loved every second of it. Deonn's writing keeps you begging for more with its lyrical and gorgeous cadence.
2. Grief and love are themes that carried over from Legendborn and I absolutely love that. In BM, we explored mass grief and the effects of it. We also touched on the guilt that comes even when there is nothing that could be done. Deonn handled these subjects with care and grace.
3. The relationships, platonic and romantic, in BM get fleshed out so so well. Bree's friendship with Alice and William had me just as excited as her romance scenes with Nick and Sel. I love the way this book broke the traditional mold of "friendships must be less intimate than romantic relationships to show the difference." William, Alice, and Bree have just as beautiful relationships as Bree and Nick do. They care for each other the way friends do in real life instead of the distant way we're so used to seeing in media.
4. Racism was tackled head on in this book and in the last. That is something I appreciate to no end. There is no sugar coating or defense of it. It is layed bare and condemned.
5. Volition. Allowing Bree and the rest of the gang even just a few chapters to rest and recuperate without fear really allowed us to glimpse who they are apart from running for their lives. Particularly when we see Selwyn create fireworks with his aether and at Bree's birthday. Too often in fantasy, we see characters going on and on without ever having any break and somehow being totally fine. BM didn't do that. It treated the characters like people. We can't go on and on and on without rest. It weighs on you. We have to take time to regroup and recharge. Selwyn said it best, "we are not meant to run from trauma to trauma." I think Volition not only enhanced and deepened the plot, but it reminded us that these are 17-20 year olds. They aren't war heros. They are children who just want to stay alive.
I will be doing character analyses later so these are just my thoughts on the themes and things that stood out to me

Nick just... left?
William keeps arguing with Russ in the infirmary, but I don’t hear him as my mind runs through the events just a few hours ago. I can’t help the mix of guilt and worry that run through me. Nick wouldn’t be here tonight if it weren’t for me. He wouldn’t have cracked his skull open in another fight against the demons, or be stuck back in a place he clearly hates. My throat starts to hurt.
The next couple hours are a blur, but Sarah offers to take me back home. I appreciate the offer, especially when we run into Sel. Predictably, he threatens to kill me. Not so predictably, Sel and Sarah end up in a growling contest (this actually happens and it’s hilarious). I finally get home but my throat won’t stop hurting the entire night.
The next morning, I feel even worse as I collapse into a coughing fit. The copper taste on my tongue fills me with dread, until I nearly choke on a flower. The small flower is a brilliant yellow, stained red at the edge. The color reminds me of Nick’s hair in the sunlight, and there is no doubt who it’s for. The taste and smell of blood turn my stomach. I can’t help but remember the crack of Nick’s skull, and the blood that stained his hair red just like the flower.
I don’t have time for this. I have so many other things to focus on, from Sel trying to kill me to figuring out who killed my mom, and I just feel mounting frustration looking at the dumb pretty flower. Besides, Nick probably doesn’t want anything to do with me after he left last night. Then I remember he left me a voice call last night.
“B. Tonight was- I’m glad you’re safe. I- I don’t know where to start. Call me. Please. Or text.”
I feel fuzzy, his voice washing away my stress. Gods, I feel far too much for someone I’ve met mere days ago. Still, Nick is... kind. I don’t think I mind falling in love with him. It’s not something to focus on right now, but- maybe it is. I need someone to rely on, and so does Nick. We’re in this together out of mutual interest, but maybe it can be more than that. Remembering the way Nick protected me, the warmth I feel with him, I wonder if it has been more for a while now.
The pain in my throat fades to a soft tickle, and I cough again. This time, the flowers are purely yellow.
*Notes*
Bree coughs up forsynthias, in case anyone was wondering! They mean anticipation, and a new start. They can also mean dependability or devoted love.
In this universe, coughing up flowers happens when you love someone and have yet to confess. After confessing, the disease is no longer fatal (although it can persist if the love was not requited). The flowers can be just a sweet symbol, or it can be painful depending on how requited one thinks their love is/general emotions surrounding the relationship. I already wrote one on Nick, but planning to do one for Sel soon too!
