Hey! I’m a beginner fan of Ted Kord, but I’ve only really read pages of comics on the internet, and I’m not sure where to start reading. I’ve read volume 1 of the 70s JLI comics, but that’s about it. Would you happen to know?

which has all of ted’s appearance in chronological order! just look at the ‘ted’ column and make your way down from there. I would skip his charlton stuff until later and start with his 1986 run with “blue beetle #1″ and move into his justice league shenanigans from there (JLI -> JLA/JLE issues after JLI was cancelled). After finishing his JLA stuff I would highly recommend reading Extreme Justice even though the art is a bit.. Extra.. and his appearances in Birds of Prey (he originally goes under the screen name “bumblebeeb”).

Comixology is having a Batgirl 50th Anniversary Sale until the 27th! 

I figured I’d rec my own favourites.

Detective Comics 359

Barbara Gordon’s first appearance in comics, and it’s pretty awesome. She’s immediately established as a competent, brave, stubborn genius who can make her own way.

Batman: Batgirl Barbara faces the Joker for the first time.

Batman: Batgirl (Girlfenzy) Barbara struggles with the life she’s chosen while she hunts down Mr. Zsasz. 

DC First: Batgirl/Joker A sequel to Batman: Batgirl; this time, Barbara’s protege decides she needs to challenge the Joker.

Birds of Prey: 

Volume 1

This collects all of the specials that came before the series, including Barbara’s initial recruitment of Dinah, a team up with Lois Lane, and a mini involving Huntress and Catwoman. They’re all a ton of fun, and it’s great seeing Barbara and Dinah’s relationship develop.  Volume 2

The first eleven issues of the series proper. Dinah is caught in a Most Dangerous Game ripoff, but she’s aided by Barbara’s former fiance. Barbara make an internet friend named Bumblebeeb. Dick takes Barbara to the circus. Dinah tries to go on vacation and ends up fighting a sea monster. Barbara hacks into the pentagon and borrows a missile.

Volume 3

Dinah and Catwoman are forced to team up again when they’re sucked into Apokolips. Barbara finally meets Bumblebeeb face to face, and he turns out to be Ted Kord. Then she confronts the Joker, saving Manhattan in the process. 

This also collects the Hunt for Oracle arc, which is one of my favourite stories ever. It beautifully showcases Barbara’s strength, resourcefulness, and cunning. It’s also the first time she meets Dinah in person.

These trades collect the first 37 issue of Cassandra’s Batgirl series, along with the Batgirl Annual and Secret Files and Origins - Kelley Puckett’s entire run. 

It’s a distinct, powerful narrative, one of loss and guilt and trauma, hope and joy and change, choice and family and redemption. It balances warmth and melancholy, humour and tragedy. It beautifully develops the relationships Cass finds in Gotham. 

Batgirl 1

Stephanie’s Batgirl isn’t collected in trade, but the sale does have all 24 issues. It also features Barbara as a main character, but sadly not Cass. 

The series has its flaws, but it can be very fun, and the art is usually great. Steph battles her own insecurities to prove herself as Batgirl, making new friends and enemies along the way. 

My personal favourite arc is The Flood, issues nine to twelve. She has a cute team-up with Supergirl in fourteen, and another with Squire in twenty-two.

you know what? give me tattooed babs. babs with an entire sleeve dedicated to those closest to her, an amalgamations of emblems for each of the various birds of prey operatives over the years cascading down her arm. there is a cluster dinah insisted on gathered together of what she declared “the core four” and said it had to include one of oracle’s own. the collection started out small though it grew as the team did, and there were moments of hesitation and longer sleeves for the periods it was disbanded. on her opposite shoulder a lily blossoms for everyone they’ve ever lost, and below it on her shoulder blade is a small robin for one whose wings were clipped far too young and another for a bird who spread its wings. a small bat circles a much larger one, and a third robin joins the others. a thin string of binary code translates to “bumblebeeb” and a scar left from brainiac is lost amidst a design stephanie painstakingly drew up one weekend. eventually the sleeve stretches up her shoulder and toward her collarbone, and bright bursts of color bleed into her scars.
