RIGHT Yona of the Dawn theory for the latest chapter, before the next chapter comes out and destroys it.

So, not Saying Yona has priestess abilities to see the future. I don’t think she does since all she’s mentioned is dreams and feelings while every canonnically prophetic character calls it “hearing the voices of the gods”. (Zeno, Ik-soo, her mom)

I think her soul is just connected to certain people and places. 

Anyway, what really struck me as odd about Yona’s dream of everyone in coffins is the grouping. Who was in coffins? Jae-ha, Kija, Shin-ah, Soo-Won, and Mei-nyah. 

Why this group? I think it’s because Soo-Won and Mei-nyah are the sword and shield of the original prophecy. It’s the four dragons (minus immortal Zeno) that are there, that Yona has a proven divine connection to. The only other category of people that the gods have literally spoken to her about are  “the sword and shield that protect the sovereign.” 

If it was just people she cared about, standard nightmare fuel, Hak and Yoon would be in the coffins. Yona has little to no reason to care about Mei-nyah, like doesn’t want her dead and will protect her given the chance, in fact, there are lots of reasons not to like her. The deaths of Kouka kingdom citizens and undeserved hatred tend not to get people started on the right foot. But Yona does like her. Maybe it’s more than narrative foils and redemption. 

The sword and shield hadn’t been revealed/awakened the last time they met with Ik-soo, but Soo-won is on the edge of a revelation and Mei-nyah has started her redemption arc by caring about Yoon. Starting to feel guilty about the people she’s trampled/killed to get what she wanted 

(think the way she flinched when reminded of the delegate she poisoned) (girl was always gonna betray the Kai emporer, there was no reason to go through with his plan).

Also, this theory gives the JUCIEST tidbit of a prophecy long ago that “the blood of the crimson dragon king shall be sword and shield for the reborn god”. Like, reading that, anyone would assume that the crimson dragon king would be born among his descendants, and the sheer betrayal of that not happening is consistent with the theme of unfair fates in this universe.

It ALSO acts as a fascinating parallel to the dragons. One person blessed with the power/curse compared to the generations and family that all experience the effects of the curse/blessing. Both doomed to die young. All the bloodlines kept alive because the gods wanted to protect their crimson dragon. 

It’s love to destruction. Divine verse human. Would the dragon villages have been different if the dragon blood acted more like the crimson blood disease? Do we finally have an answer for why Soo-Won is an all-talented shell of a person? Extra gifted for the purpose of serving Yona, but refusing to serve Yona/acknowledge the gods. 

I kinda hope Mei-Nyah is just like that, clever and bold and sly enough to get what she wants through battle, sex, or any act inbetween. But she’s meant to foil Soo-Won’s determination to do whatever it takes to get what she wants with the goal of spitting the gods in the eye instead of Soo-Won’s determination to pretend they don’t affect the world at all.

And she’s meant to foil Yona’s character growth as she slowly starts to care about people other than herself (with handsome, trusty hunk in love with her to help out). 

Anyway, with this dream putting Mei center stage and connecting her to the four dragons and Soo Won, either Yona is prophetic and it’s just those characters specifically that are slotted to die, or Mei’s the shield and the horrible feeling from Yona’s last life’s grave burning down reached across her spiritual connection to certain people and resulted in the coffin dream.

decided to draw out an au of coa v and dbd because i love mashing my intrests together at mach speed

more rambles/explanation under the cut!

this au came to mind because trickster from coa 3 shares a name w trickster, ji-woon hak and then i started thinking about who would fit everyone else. the basis of coa/call of the abyss is a server wide tournament taking place around december revolving around the abyss and a different theme each time - mostly incolving lovecraftian elements. they’re all connected to one another through being novels written in universe! theres more information on the id5 wiki if you’re intrested ^^

since coa v’s my favourite of them all, i decided to draw out this one first! coa v’s premise is based on the 1927 film ‘metropolis’ as well as the lovecraft novel colour out of space. from what i understand, metropolis is a city of eternal night on an isolated island: within the lights of the city lurks the ‘colour out of space’ which merges the people of metropolis with machinery and itself. the rebels (survivors) stage a media war against it (& eternal aurora) to reveal the secrets behind metropolis and warn the civilians.

the concept for this is basically the same: replacing the general concept of the abyss with the entity and placing the coa’s within the realm as a whole. im also not going to stick to the strict formula of 5 survivors and 1 hunter to have more fun with the idea.

anyway! onto the fun part: the whole who’s who. so far everyones got a basic sketch down/basic premise but these two are the only ones i’ve managed to colour/polish.

not pictured are paper boy/mail carrier in this au as charlotte & victor deshayes, tabloid as zarina kassir and neon vanguard as david king. will do my best to follow up with their designs as soon as i can! also sorry if my handwritings messy

pirate radio/adam francis:

initially felix was my choice for pirate radio: he’s got the blonde hair & beard combo after all, but i realised that auditorium fit felix way better, so i went back to the drawing board and settled on adam - i remember seeing theories about if there were to be a protagonist for dbd he’d be it and thus the role settled with him. plus his coat ended up reminding me of pirate radio so! happy accidents

his stuck with the original the most minus a lot of the body horror being adapted: such as the headphones and the arm. half of it is because i didn’t initially want it to be to body horrory like the original, but also because i am very biased towards pirate radios default. he’s handsome and gold and purple is my favourite colour combo. plus the concept art was very... lacking aside from elements that wouldn’t belong on adam (such as jose’s prosthetic). that ended up being adapted to be more of a control panel that can be removed.

decided not to go fully blond and for more of a gradient, because i thought it’d suit him better.

anyway he’s the least affected by the effects of colour out of space of their group: mainly has the cd in his chest as his main drawback. everything else is easily removable. tries to spread the rebels goals through teaching via the radio if that makes sense.

the coat tassels were inspired by dazai bsd to try and make him stand out a little more from the original.

auditorium/felix richter

as mentioned above, felix was basically my first choice for auditorium and that hasn’t changed - him and luca have a lot of similarities as an architect and an inventor respectively plus the whole blue suit and blonde combo made me go “yea thats felix”

his was also where i started to majorly deviate from what was canon and go with my own thing: mostly because of the concept art making me go “oh wait i like this more this would be fun” resulting in this. granted looking back he still looks fairly similar, but it was the first push to have some more fun with this project

the mask came from my love for visitor from the future!

in contrast to adam: he and charlotte are the most affected by colour out of space: mainly being his nonremovable projector and eye plate. the projector spins and can broadcast movies if he closes his eye. david likes spinning the projector

does all the tech work for the rebels: does more so architecturally things than canon auditorium, but he keeps them safe and alive. doesn’t like to be publically involved with most things, but they’re like a family in a sense.

JoshNeku, I cant fully explain why but I always really liked this messed up ship, theres so many layers and complexity to it that makes it so intriguing and conflicting to ship lol but overall I genuinely do believe Joshua cares for Neku and saw value in him in the end, not as just someone he manipulated in the game and gambled on, but genuinely sees him as a friend after witnessing him selflessly risk his life trusting Joshua when he had every reason to pull the trigger. To me I feel like these two have alot of unresolved issues they need to talk out but Joshua isnt willing to face Neku nor admit he actually cares and wants to be friends for whatever complicated reason he cant. But I believe if whatever wasnt holdin him back he would have joined Neku and the others and the two would’ve reconciled, which is mostly my basis for shipping it lol.

Sormik, its literally canon nobody can convince me otherwise, they have every bit of confirmation minus only an official statement sayin their endgame but honestly who needs that? anyone who’s played the game and watched the anime KNOWS these two are way more than friends and way more than brothers.

Kokichi x Shuichi, like JoshNeku this is a very complex and complicated ship, theres alot of flaws in it but also a ton of possibility. I feel like these two had a chance but missed it because Kokichi was such a constant liar and Shuichi never actually tried to understand him or give him the benefit of the doubt despite him trying to be a better detective, he failed to properly investigate Kokichi and get to the bottom of why he is the way he is and what his true motives were and instead rushed to assume the worst of him, doubting him till the very end. This ship is even more tragic than JoshNeku whereas Joshua and Neku ended up genuinely caring about eachother despite their messed up history, Shuichi completely gave up on Kokichi and vice versa, but you could tell the two did genuinely wanna get along with and get to know one another but simply couldnt because of the constant misunderstandings. Shuichi got impatient with Kokichi and gave up and Kokichi lost hope in befriending Shuichi and gave up on letting anyone in on his plans and resolved to die alone hated by everyone even the one person he had hoped would understand him. Their story is super tragic with so much untapped potential I cant help enjoying it. You could say Im over analyzing and sure maybe in a way I am but thats just how I see it.

Videl x Gohan, this one needs no explanation we all know this is one of the most healthiest if not THE healthiest non problematic ship in the entire DBZverse, its just so wholesom and pure theres really nothing bad to say about it. The one gripe I and many others have is Videl losing her drive as a fighter and retiring to being a housewife, not that being a housewife is bad its just given her potential beforehand and this being a shounen manga its not unusual for us to have expected more for her than just being a housewife. As for Gohan he is father and husband of the year, a million times better than his father was, this is why ppl need to stop sleepin on Chichi because she raised her son right, to be a real man and take care of his family. Gohan may be rusty and takin Ls now on the battlefield but atleast when he comes home he tends to his family instead of going to 10 different planets and mentors trying to get stronger while neglecting his wife and kid in the process.

Carmina thoughtfully chirps to herself as she jots down a list of thoughts on each of the mentioned killers and their current dynamics.

Sadako - A sweet girl! We're the newest ones here on this side of the realm, so we tend to stick together to help each other learn. She's the best younger sister I could wish for. I hope she finds some sort of peace here after what happened to her before she was taken.

Kazan - It's a slow process to fully understand him. It's in my natural instinct to fear him, but I know he's not as demonic as he appears. Besides, he takes wonderful care of Rin. She's lucky to have a well-meaning ancestor she can connect to. Hopefully we can slowly learn to comprehend each other as our time in this realm continues onward.

Rin - We've certainly befriended one another. We partake in friendly sparring matches to test our powers and also paint together. We've both been so open to sharing in hobbies, we might as well be copycats, in a positive connotation of course. It helps that we're around the same age range, we end up relating to similar struggles a surprising amount.

Ji-Woon - He's an interesting fellow. I'd say that I'd like to get to know him better, but he adores talking about himself all day. The only times he's sought me out is for some art commissions of, you guessed it, himself. I've been doing my best to try to connect with him on a more personal level, but it seems like he keeps his life behind his persona locked up tight. Ah well, at least there's room for us to learn about each other through our respective mediums. His usage of screams in his music is incredibly expressive... minus the fact that those are the screams of real dying survivors.

As for a best friend, it should need no introduction that Carmina and the bittersweet James Sunderland have gotten along very well together since they first met. Their friendship is what both of them desperately needed as they first entered the realm, and now they continue to grow as people with each other's help.

I was going through your Invader Zim tag and I noticed in your distant future AU Dib's and Reg's suits have some kind of PAK-like device on their chest, I was wondering if you could give us some info about those devices, how they compare to standard Irken PAKs, what kind of tools they have, etc. I'm also curious about the suits in general, I assume Zim made them and the PAK-devices?

Dib "Oh, yeah; my PAK. I forget it's attatched to me half the time. Zim likes to refer to it as a "HAK"... you know, because it's a PAK on a human. But, um, yeah. Let's just call it my PAK.

It was... sort of a late wedding present to me from Zim. Luckily he isn't here to take all the credit. It was actually a group effort between Zim, me and several family members to engineer and implant a PAK device compatible with human biology. Zim was the driving force behind the project to be fair, but it took all of us over a year of research, reverse engineering, test simulations and manual labor to make our theory a reality. It was a HUGE undertaking all done off the books; but we had fun, and I think it brought us all closer together in the long run... minus the stress arguing and government dodging.

I was volunteered to be the guinea pig. We all had ethical concerns and reservations. I mean, I had to trust Zim to essentially be my surgeon. That took some consideration, but I had blood supervising him. My dad taught me a long time ago sometime progress means taking extreme risks.

My PAK and and an original Irken PAK are essentially the same, minus a lot of the extra gadgets and the sinister hive mind programming. The human skeleton isn't flexible enough to be suspended from the spine by PAK legs, so, I don't have any of those, which is a bummer... Not gonna lie, PAK legs are neat and I have leg envy. Just don't tell Zim that.

Jeez, what else?-- OH! My PAK can be used as a interstellar communication device and a hologram projector. There's also a pretty handy stunning mechanism for self defense too, but it drains a lot of energy. We had to modify the design to properly sync with my nervous system.

Technically I have two PAKs; a tiny one implanted on my spine at the base of my skull that syncs with my organic brain and main PAK, that one is hidden under the skin; and the main PAK that resembles the Irken model is implanted on my chest, over my heart and grafted onto my lungs.

It enables me to breathe in most environments, translates languages for me, collects and stores my memories as I function, speeds up my natural healing process, enhances my immune system and provides enough nutrition to keep me from starving for about a month... that doesn't stop me from enjoying a full meal and naps, trust me. I still get an appetite for snacks and I'm tired at the end of the work day, but it's a bearable tired.

My PAK is the first of it's kind, so how exactly it will effect me for the rest of my life remains to be seen; I'm still taking notes and making observations. Theoretically it should expand my life up to another 100 years. Now that I'm home, I'm hoping to improve the device before I install another improved PAK onto anyone else.

So our new antagonist has expressed that she wants the four dragons and the thunder beast. I get the dragons, especially after she saw them. Hak is a little odd simply because her logic is that she wants him because he belongs to Yona... but does he still?

Hak’s loyalty is to Yona. There is and never will be a question about that. But Hak isn’t with Yona right now. Yona and Soo-won have an alliance. Yona brings the four dragons, Yoon, and Hak to the alliance initially. The dragons remain Yona’s and while Soowon can request things, Yona can deny it. Yoon is still Yona’s too, he is simply training at the palace.

Hak is different though. Hak joined the sky Army as a foot soldier. Therefore he is Joodoh’s and by extention Soowon’s just as much ifnot more than Yona’s. Then he is being held in prison in Soowon’s custody.

Now Soowon isn’t an idiot. They can’t kill Hak. After all that would spark a war between him and Yona’s group as well as the Wind tribe. That’s part of why they are entertaining the front lines option. Just like the previous fight, Hak will either helplead them to victory and/or die in battle. For Soowon’s group, it’s a win-win situation.

With this woman already knowing Sooeon’s weaknesses there is nothing really keeping them from just giving her Hak if that was what she really wanted. Yet Soowon still tells her to stick it.

Soowon hates the red dragon, and to a degree I fully understand why. However I am really concerned where this is going. Not only does all of Yona’s group (minus Yoon) know about the sickness but so does an enemy. An enemy who has high tensions with the country. One person in particular has a strong hatred of Yona and wants her people for themsevles. This woman is also a former general and a brilliant stratigist so who knows what else she got going on.

Now if Soowon pisses her off enough, she can make sure everyone knows that Soowon is dying. With an ill king who has no heir chosen, all the countries that they just earned the respect of will just steamroll over them. However that also brings up an interesting thought. Soowon already has an heir picked out. Just hasn’t made it public yet. So say that heir is Yona and he’s gradually getting the coountry to respect her it would make the transition less turbulent in the event of his death.

HOWEVER him saying he hates the red dragon just threw up a series of que. soowon has said that he loves and cares about Yona and Hak, but he has no issue discarding them for his own goals. Follow that up with this new comment... how much of that hate transfers to Yona?

Hak/Soo-Won: *gross sobbing*the loss of their friendship literally kills me. i love that hak’s loss of his best friend is treated with the same respect to yona losing her friend/first love. plus i agree with yona when she says that hak will probably never forgive soo-won and like? his pain and grief hurts my heart, but i’m glad for that tbh? soo-won deeply hurt hak and hak doesn’t feel the same need to set aside his rage for kouka the way yona does (plus i think yona is better at confronting and coming to terms with her feelings than hak is and that leads to him never being able to fully confront his pain). the possibilities for their friendship had soo-won not ruined everything makes me wanna cry, but as for canon, i’m glad that hak isn’t interested in repairing their relationship and soo-won knows he’ll never be able to ask that from hak

Otayuri: brotp/i ship them !!i will literally cry over their friendship forever, it’s so good omg???? yuri’s dramatic as heck and otabek is secretly just as bad/the worst (re: best) enabler of all time. i love that they do stupid and ridiculous shit together, what a bunch of goobers. yuri got a larger adult support group over season 1 and it makes me super happy that he also got a good friend to do shenanigans with without judgement too, it’s going to be great for him. and kudos to beka making another good skating friend who’s he’s secretly been pining after for years lol. i like to think that otabek has my thing with social anxiety and general introvertness, but he feels very relaxed and energized around yura and they can hang out for hours without getting exhaustedi can definitely see them falling in love too. i know there’s all the ~~discourse~~ nonsense going around them, but they’d be super cute and great together tbqh. they’re so supportive and sweet, it makes me happy

Do you like the idea of Suwon relinquish the throne to Yona? Do we have to acknowledge that most of her lucky accomplishments makes her a good ruler? I think she would give up lands if necessary to prevent war like her father. She would also blindly trust suspicious politicians from other nations and take their offer at face value. Where is her character stand without supernatural powers and the guidance of fate? It sounds like cheating to me if she supposes to rule at the end with those reasons

I hate the idea of Suwon relinquish the throne to Yona. Not only because her lucky accomplishments, but also because I am just not seeing it. If Yona being the ruler was the end game, than why was she not gaining knowledge and learning useful skills that are necessary for ruler from the beginning? Instead she has been learning stuff like archery and swordsmanship, which is nice, but not a must-have for a ruler. Rulers have people who can do the fighting for them. If Yona being a ruler is the end game, I would like to see a proper built-up: Yona learning strategy, how administration works, how politics works, etc. This should have started at the beginning of the story. Apparently, less than 30% of the story is left now. In this case, I doubt such a big development can be dumped successfully into the story.

Another thing is that Yona has no vision of what she is going to do as a ruler. What kind of country does she want? How would she go about making it reality? This is completely fine to have no vision if she is not the ruler at the end of the day, but if she is it is a big minus.

You make a good point that Yona is very trusting of people and if she meets a cunning politician than this politician if she or he has brain can easily manipulate Yona. A clever politician should be skilled in diplomacy and know how to act not to make herself\himself unlikable and unpleasant. Of course any evil guy is quickly made unlikable in the manga, so she had no real battle with first-rate politician apart from her little conversation with Soo-won in chapter 182, which she lost for she learnt nothing and got only a polite and useless answer.

My another problem is with what the story presented at the beginning that it is not enough to be nice to be a good King and that competency and intelligence is important and makes a difference - Soo-won. In view of this how Yona fits into it? What makes her a better ruler than her father? What would make her better than Soo-won? Simply that she is the chosen one makes her batter? 

As it is it looks like Yona will get the throne not because she is the most qualified, which is clearly not the case, but because she is the chosen one.  

I agree that if it is like this, it will feel like cheating. Yona has super-powerful allies that no one else could have and becoming the ruler to cap it all is just so much meh.

I suppose feelings like this may be coming from the latest chapter were Soo-won tells that his child does not have to be the ruler. About this, I would wait a bit longer. Just like this story developed Yona and now is developing Hak, I hope the same will be done for Soo-won and he will have a change of heart and most importantly he will not suffer from some cliche deadly disease.

Personally, I hope that Yona will be similar to Shoukei from The Twelve Kingdoms who had to accept her fate. I have too many problems with Yona being the ruler at the end. I just don’t see a proper build-up for it.

So an anon sent me an ask how Hak would react to figuring out Yona has a crush on Jae-ha and that got me thinking how he would react and tease Yona, falling back into his role when she was in love with Soo-won and even show her support. So going with the idea off the last prompt that the water kiss happened with Jae-ha (maybe minus his confession at the end instead him still wondering if he heard it wrong her talking in her sleep confession) and chapter 176 gave me ideas of Hak pushing Yona to tell him XD So here is that I also made a manga edit even with it before writing this, I’ll put a short flashback here of Hak calling her out on it in Xing as the anon suggested:

 “Oh, don’t worry I’m not expecting anything. I just thought it would be ok if I told you, that’s all.” Hak held up a hand, trying to calm down the stuttering princess as she was blushing profoundly when he brought up he meant his loud confession yesterday. “Besides, you already have somebody you like, don’t you?”

 Yona’s eyes nearly shot out of her head. “W-WHAATTT? HOW DID YOU-“

 “You’re really obvious princess, besides I was the one that called you out on your last crush wasn’t I?” Hak asked with a slight chuckle. “As usual you’re into pretty boys with the way you look at Droopy Eyes…”

 “DON’T TELL HIM!” Yona immediately covered his mouth, sighing with relief that said Green Dragon was busy talking to Yoon so he didn’t hear them. She was blushing madly as she glared at her guardian. “H-hak really I’m sorry about yesterday but please, please, please don’t tease me right now! And don’t let Jae-ha find out!” she shut her eyes and her cheeks were blazing with her blush. “L-look Hak I’m sorry I can’t return your feelings just…. You’ve always been family to me, I l-love you but like how I love Yoon and the dragons, you’ve been like a brother to me all my life!”

 Hak just found himself smiling at her reaction, her blushing face as so cute he could watch it for hours and he took satisfaction he knew her well enough that his suspicion was right. “Hey, it’s ok. I told you I don’t expect anything already. Just that you’re happy with the path you’ve chosen.” He stroked her hair for a moment. “But really you should tell Droopy Eyes you like him already, you’re going to implode you keep holding it in like that.”

 “B-but Hak I’m too young for him!” Yona whined softly, trying to make sure their group didn’t hear her. “I doubt he even looks at me that way.”

 Hak looked at her like she was crazy, running a hand through his hair. After all there were times he picked up on the Green Dragon’s affection towards Yona but always backed off out of respect for the Thunder Beast. “Princess just tell him and let the man decide for himself. Better yet I’ll just tell him and show you-“

 “NO!” Yona attempted punching him a few times to make him stop, she grumbled as he caught her hands and held her back. “I’ll do anything but please don’t tell him!”

 “Even give me your share of Yoon’s rice balls at dinner?” Hak joked.

 “Done.” Yona huffed. “Just PLEASE keep it a secret until I choose to tell him ok?”

  Yona slowly opened her eyes as that memory had come to her in her dreams as she had rested after being rescued from that fire at the castle while she was still a hostage in Sen Province. She overheard Yoon talking with the dragons about their injuries and how she might have a burn in her throat or inhaled too much smoke. She couldn’t talk while Yoon was treating her injured feet so that must have been the case, Shin-ah was sitting by her and helping communicate as Yoon was rushed off to treat other patients but he growled at Hak and Jae-ha to take it easy due to their injuries.

 “We have water here Yona.” Shin-ah mentioned, but blinked as she saw Yona’s entire face turn red just remembering her kiss with Jae-ha, she immediately hid her face under the blanket, making the Green Dragon chuckle at her reaction.

 ‘Something happened between those two…’ Hak thought to himself, noticing Yona’s skittish behavior and Jae-ha’s smug smile on his face looking at her. ‘Well she did say after he blurted out she’s dear to him that she wanted to tell him that she likes him…’ he recalled a conversation he had with the princess just before she got kidnapped.

 After Shin-ah left to get food Hak’s stomach growled and he grumbled as he sat up. “I can’t take this, I’ll go too.”

 “Now Hak, Yoon said to take it easy.” Jae-ha reminded him.

 “Meat is my medicine.” The Thunder Beast shrugged, getting a robe to wear and turning as Yona’s stomach growled loudly.

 Jae-ha chuckled as he bent over by the princess, smiling with amusement as she was still hiding her face. “Yona dear, do you want to go get some food? I can be your legs and carry you if your feet hurt…”

 Yona tossed around a bit under the covers, unable to speak and she didn’t want to show her face.

 “Princess come on, your stomach is sounding like a beast under there.” Hak lifted the covers and his eyes widened at the sight of the redheaded girl blushing bright red and looking at Hak with worried eyes as if pleading not to move the blanket so that Jae-ha would see her face. ‘…. Dang she looks adorable like this.’ He couldn’t help but think, smiling at her as her stomach roared again and quickly handed her cloak so she could hide under that. “Come on how about I take you? Droopy Eyes might drop you with how beat up he is.”

 Yona slowly sat up and nodded, trying to hide her face against Hak as she got her cloak on so the Green Dragon wouldn’t see her, though he caught a sight of her blushing face and was still smiling. “Don’t push yourselves ok?” Jae-ha called to them as he joined Kija in watching over Gobi.

 Yona sighed as she stepped out of the tent, then blinked rapidly when Hak picked her up. ‘Hak!!! Don’t do that, your wounds!’ she struggled to speak but nothing came out.

 Hak sighed as he walked along holding her. “You know you looked like you were going to explode back there with your face that red…”

 Yona swore her blush got worse with him calling her out on it. ‘He’d tease the hell out of me if he knew what happened!!’ she thought to herself, blushing as that water kiss with her Ryokuryuu was still fresh on her mind.

 Seeing as they were a bit away from the tent, Hak just thought he might as well ask her straight out. “So have you told Droopy Eyes that you like him?”

 ‘HAK!!! Of all the things to ask me when I can’t talk?!’ Yona wanted to scream at him, but she just ended up huffing and puffing as her voice couldn’t come.

 Hak stared at her in silence for a few moments until she finally shook her head. “… No? With the way he’s grinning like an idiot and you’re being so shy I assumed something happened… I mean, you want to tell him don’t you?”

 ‘Hak I can’t talk right now how could I have told him?!’ Yona tried to shout but once again nothing came out. She grumbled as she really did want to tell her Green Dragon and was cut off earlier when she tried, and once they got away from the fire she did try to tell him but her voice was gone already…

 Hak seemed to somewhat figure out what she was trying to say. “So you want me to tell him for you since you can’t talk?” he offered, and she immediately tried to pound him with her fists for that.

 ‘NO!!!’ Yona tried to scream as he held off her fury of punches.

 “So what happened? He made a move on you?” Hak tried guessing once she stopped trying to beat him up and was panting for air.

 Yona shook her head rapidly, though blushing even worse now. She swore she was blushing all the way down to her toes at this point. She then twirled her fingers into circles, unable to look at the Thunder Beast in the eyes. ‘Well I guess you could consider it making a move but I’m still confused if he wanted to kiss me or was just delirious from the smoke…’

 “Ok… Did you make a move on him?” Hak joked this time. “That had to be a disaster because you’re horrible at flirting.”

 Yona smacked him on the chest for that one. ‘Nobody asked you Hak!’

 “Seriously princess what happened? Did he kiss you or something?” Hak just threw out there randomly, then his eyes widened at her reaction, her face turned so red it blended with her hair and he swore steam was coming out of her ears. She smacked his shoulder a few times trying to tell him to let her go that she could walk on her own but he just held her tighter as she squirmed. “… He did? What when he rescued you?” he frowned when she shook her head again, still blushing and smacking his shoulder. “Stop doing that and squirming so much! I could drop you if you do that. I mean seriously isn’t that what you wanted? You were so sure he didn’t look at you that way…”

 Hak was interrupted shortly after as the Fire Tribe made a fuss over him and the princess, though once Kye-sook appeared he quickly ducked into corner and tried to make his way back to the medical tent. “Damn… I wanted to eat more meat but I don’t want to see that advisor right now.”

 ‘Hak! I can walk on my own you’re going to make your wounds worse! Put me down!’ Yona smacked at his shoulder again, panting into his ear as she struggled to speak. But then blinked as she looked up to see Jae-ha flying in the sky and then landing right in front of them. ‘Jae-ha?! What are you doing you should be resting back in the tent!’ she struggled to talk again though blushed seeing her crush once again.

 “Oh hey Droopy Eyes, thought you were resting.” Hak shrugged, chuckling at his timing and Yona looking like she was trying to scold the Green Dragon out but couldn’t speak.

 “I was but Tae-jun got this medicine from that advisor guy.” Jae-ha said, holding up a little white bottle. “He said it’s medicine for Yona dear’s throat, Yoon checked it out and said it should be ok as he was using on other soldiers just now.”

 Hak turned back to see the advisor wasn’t too far away from them, he shrugged and handed the princess off to the Ryokuryuu. “Take her back to the medical tent, it’s best if that guy doesn’t see her right now. You can get her away faster after all.”

 ‘HAK!!!’ Yona looked at the Thunder Beast like he was crazy handing her off like that, but then froze in a massive blush as Jae-ha held her and handed her the little bottle. She realized that this was Hak’s way of giving her an excuse to be alone with Jae-ha, but she still wanted to strangle her best friend for still pushing her like this, knowing how badly embarrassed she was.

 “Right, let’s go Yona dear.” Jae-ha smiled, taking a few jumps to get them away and landing a bit away from the tent, carrying her and musing how she was still blushing like mad. “Hopefully the medicine can help your throat so you recover faster, but there was something I wanted to tell you Yona….” He smiled, looking at her as he held her near eye level. “I mean, while you could talk I heard you say something that I was wondering about when I found you in the fire…”

 Yona tilted her head at that, not sure what he was talking about. Her heart still hammering away as he held her close, drinking down that medicine though it made her start coughing again.

 “You dear?” Jae-ha looked alarmed as he placed her down and frowned seeing her clearly in pain as she coughed away, clutching at her throat. “I should go get Yoon…”

 Yona then grabbed at his robes as he turned to jump. “Haaa… J-Jae-ha… C-can you hear me?” she breathed, looking up at him while still blushing.

 “Well it looks like the medicine worked.” Jae-ha smiled, looking like he wanted to hug her but hesitated seeing how skittish she was acting earlier. “Still let’s head back to the tent so you can rest-“

 “I love you Jae-ha.”

 Jae-ha froze right in place, looking down at the red head with his eyes wide in shock. Just like in the fire he was questioning if he was hearing things or hallucinating.

 “I wanted to… Tell you… Finally…” Yona coughed again, smiling at him. “Did you hear me? I’m so glad I finally got it out.” She chuckled weakly. “I tried when you told me that I’m important to you but… I-I hesitated back there and-“ she was cut off by the Ryokuryuu finally just snapping, lifting her into his arms and kissing her deeply.

 Jae-ha held her tight as his lips traced hers, kissing her lips over and over as he just let go completely, pouring all his feelings for the redhead as he held her, only stopping when he heard her coughing again and struggling to breath. He smiled as he pulled back, pressing his forehead against hers. “…. I heard you say that when I found you… I couldn’t believe it at first but… Here you’re saying it now…” he chuckled, looking right into her eyes with admiration burning in them.

 “I did?” Yona blushed madly, not realizing she had said it in her unconscious state. His sudden kiss back there completely making sense after she gave him that water with her mouth. “I-I… I hesitated before because I was worried that you might not-“

 Jae-ha smiled and hushed her with another kiss, a longer one this time as he stroked her hair with one hand, parting lips as she coughed once again. “You asked me once what I think of you, and I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to bother you or make things awkward but… The truth is…. I love you, Yona dear.” He whispered against her lips.

 Yona felt her eyes well up with tears, bursting with happiness hearing that her feelings were mutual, it was such a shock she didn’t even know hot to process it and she felt her heart had stopped. Did Hak know and that was why he was pushing her to confess? She found herself crying now as she hugged him tightly. “You do…? I…. I never expected and thought that…” she struggled to find her words as she coughed again. “I thought for sure I was too young for you and…” she couldn’t help but think back to Awa when he teased her that she needed to fill out a bit more.

 Jae-ha chuckled and shook his head. “I would think earlier would have banished that kind of thought from your mind.” He teased, kissing at her jaw now.

 Yona swore she couldn’t blush any deeper. “… I was just trying to give you water after all… I-I didn’t mean to…”

 “But you sure didn’t fight me that hard and even kissed me back, though not at first.” Jae-ha teased further, planting butterfly kisses on her neck. “Part of me just couldn’t hold back after hearing you professing your love in your sleep.”

 “W-well I didn’t know that!” Yona protested, coughing once more. “Also I don’t have experience kissing like you do….” She grumbled.

 Jae-ha grinned as he hovered his lips over hers. “Would you like some lessons, Yona darling?” he hummed, doing a spin on his usual nickname for her.

 Yona felt her cheeks burn at the offer. “… M-maybe…” she groaned as she started coughing again.

 “Perhaps when you’re fully healed.” Jae-ha smiled, kissing her forehead, lifting her up into his arms again. “For now let’s get you back to the tent to rest as we can just talk for now.” He nuzzled his nose against hers. “I can’t wait to see everyone else’s reaction I have to admit, though I’d had an feeling Hak already knew with the way he tried to hint to me to go ahead and hit on you.”

 “He what?!” Yona nearly shouted but her voice couldn’t go that high. “… I told him not to tell you until I decided!” she grumbled.

 “Well he didn’t tell me, just basically tried to call me out on my feelings, something I had been doing to him for a while I have to admit.” Jae-ha chuckled, shaking his head. “I didn’t realize he meant that you felt the same way, probably just trying to help you, Yona dear. Just how long have you been hiding your little crush on me?”

 Yona felt her cheeks heat up as she looked away. “… Since the Nadai…” she mumbled.

 “Oh really now? I should have figured that out with the way you were so upset with it hurting me…” Jae-ha smirked at that. “I guess because I was dealing with my own denial at the time, it’s why your question threw me off asking what I thought of you. I was just trying to be mindful of Hak’s feelings after the loud confession he did recently…”

 “That’s actually when Hak found out, when I tried to apologize for not feeling the same he called me out on liking you.” Yona admitted, still blushing madly.

 Jae-ha smirked at that, remembering how Hak mentioned her heart seemed stable now, perhaps this was what he was talking about then. “Well then, I guess this means we’re starting a courtship Princess Yona?” he teased, using her formal title for a change.

 Yona blushed once again hearing him say that. “… I-I guess… I mean… If that’s ok with you… I…” she stammered, eyes darting all over as she started coughing again. “You just never seemed like the type to tie down to one girl…”

 “Ahh so that was the other thing bugging you.” Jae-ha smiled warmly. “See that’s what happened that time and why I never went back to the Red Light, it felt lonely and you were on my mind the whole time. You’ve become the princess of my heart and completely ensnared me Yona love, brought out the chain and wrapped it around my heart and I’m ready to give this a try and see if it works.” He kissed her cheek that felt warm against his lips from her constant blushing. “All I know is that I want to be by your side Yona dear, always.”

 Yona smiled wide at that, finally getting the courage to kiss him this time. “… And that’s all I want.”

AAS NOVA Does an AGN Help or Hurt Star Formation? By Astrobites One of the many mysteries of galaxy evolution is how the formation of stars is affected by a process called feedback. Unlike comments coming from a teacher on an essay, in the galactic context, feedback is coming from powerful sources of energy such as active galactic nuclei (AGN). Star formation in galaxies requires a lot of dense gas (also called the interstellar medium, or ISM), so any feedback processes that disrupt the presence or the denseness of said gas can affect the ability of a galaxy to form stars. Simulations have shown that AGN are theoretically capable of providing negative feedback by heating up the ISM or blowing it away. However, they might also provide positive feedback by compressing the ISM with their winds, making it denser and triggering bursts of star formation. Each of these options have theoretical merit and are observed in simulations, but it can be hard to observe the effects in the wild. Today’s paper takes advantage of a particularly well-situated Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 5728, to enhance our understanding of AGN feedback processes. The Seyfert 2 designation is used to describe galaxies containing AGN that are similar to quasars, but that have visible host galaxies while most quasars do not. Positive Feedback from Outflows? The authors use observations of NGC 5728 in the optical wavelength range, the range visible to humans, to target light from stars and several emission lines generated by ionized (i.e. heated) gas. Targeting emission from a molecular transition (the carbon monoxide CO (J=2–1) transition, to be specific) also helped them trace out the distribution of molecular gas within NGC 5728, which is useful for examining how much material is available to form stars. From these observations, the authors noted a few prominent structures. First, there are two spiral arms (only faintly visible in CENTRE IMAGE). Second, there is a ring of star formation about 1 kiloparsec from the center. Lastly, there are prominent biconical outflows made up of ionized gas and full of high-energy radiation, like X-rays. Most importantly, there is an apparent intersection (labeled “A” in the IMAGE) between the star forming ring and the northwest (i.e. the upper right in CENTRE IMAGE) cone of the AGN outflow. Luckily, this intersection provides an ideal scenario for testing whether the AGN is helping or hindering star formation. The authors define three other regions in the star forming ring (B, C, and D in THE LOWER IMAGE) that are located well away from the northwest biconical outflow, and can therefore serve as controls when looking for peculiarities in the star-forming characteristics of region A. Using a BPT diagram, the authors were able to calculate the percentage of flux contributed by stars in each pixel of the image and from this calculate the star formation rate in their selected regions. While region A has more solar masses of stars formed per year than the combined average of regions A–D, it is not particularly unusual in this respect. However, the brightness of the emission from molecular gas at region A is quite low compared to the other regions, meaning that it has an unusually high star formation efficiency (BOTTOM IMAGE). Indeed, it is a factor of 3–5 higher in star formation efficiency than the control regions — a significant difference! This result seems to indicate that the presence of the AGN feedback had a positive influence on the star formation, boosting it significantly and consuming a large amount of molecular gas. This seems like a pretty good indicator that an AGN should always significantly alter a galaxy’s star forming ability, right? Not quite! While this factor of 3–5 appears pretty large, when comparing to the calculated star formation rate in the entire galaxy, region A only accounts for a miniscule LESS THAN 10% of the total. The jury is still out, then, on whether AGN will invariably cause galaxies to have significantly different star formation rates. This scenario is even further complicated by the fact that the biconical outflows may be simultaneously expelling accreted molecular gas from the spiral arms of the galaxy, preventing star formation from occurring there. Regardless, NGC 5728 is providing a rich test case to examine theories of AGN feedback and star formation. "Your Highness, it's time."

Huh? Yona is trying to finish a very good dream. It's about her wedding night. She and Hak are stark naked in bed. His erection hovering right above her. Just one more second... she's dying to know what that full penetration feels like. He's about to do it on purpose -- no reservations. Exactly what he's threatened to, joked about, for so long... put your money where your mouth is, Thunderbeast. Ohhh--

"Your Highness!" now a lady-in-waiting is pulling on her arm.

Yona reluctantly abandons her dream turned fantasy and opens her eyes to the bright light of a new day. Three ladies-in-waiting stand next to her bed. They're expectant, nervous.

"Our apologies to wake you, Your Highness. The elder sent us to prepare you right away."

"Prepare me?" Yona's eyes go wide. People are not to know about... what's happening today.

"For your farewell dinner tonight. We've been instructed to bring you to the baths and do a cleansing ceremony. I expect you'll be praying at the temple for a safe journey ahead."

Yona sighs relief. That works, "Ah, yes. Thank you."

Yona quickly dresses with their help and exits her room to see Hak sitting outside the door. Seriously, Hak?! She told him NO. He should sleep in his own bed. Even if he wouldn't let her sleep there with him (something about respecting the elders while they're there, only one more night... blah blah, for being a mischievous boy, he sure gives credence to a lot of rules). But no, he can never say away. She remembers back to that evening on the cliff... You're everywhere, Hak. Everywhere you are. Damn, she loves him. Though she's scowling at him now.

He smiles apology at her fiery expression -- was she expecting anything different?

"You, too, Lord Hak."

"Hm?" Hak glances at the lady-in-waiting who addressed him.

"The farewell dinner is for you, as well. Your entire party will need to come to the baths."

He rises, looking to Yona as if to verify she, and this, are still real, "Right, the farewell dinner."

Yona blushes. This feels kinda weird in the context of he sitting outside her door as her bodyguard.

It is no longer weird. A million miles from weird.

Yona stares through the cracks of the barrier that divides the ladies' and mens' onsen. On the other side -- Hak's defined abs. The hair on his legs. Sculpted calves. Impossibly strong arms. And that damn sexy hair that falls around his handsome face. She slides down into the hot water to calm herself down. The ladies-in-waiting could walk in and see her. Wouldn't that be difficult to explain!

She's the princess.

But this princess hasn't been thinking straight for a long time now. The worst of it started when Hak told her that her happiness made him happiest of all. Then after, her heart has been stopped by a million things -- him calling her "Yona," smelling her hair, pretending to be Ao, confessing to be in love with her...

What happened? That mean boy who gave her a hard time about suitors and trying anything dangerous, who told her she was wasting expensive makeup and that she danced like a chicken... has become the person who knows her best in the entire world. Her truest friend. And from the depths of her soul, she wants him to embrace her as his lover... that boy! She smiles at life, surprising in the most wondrous of ways.

Then she remembers. She was supposed to share today's happiness with her father. She'd often imagined it. He'd of course be drunk and crying with happiness. Proud. It strikes her -- he would be happy she chose Hak. Overjoyed, even. She'd never thought about this before, but all the time that Soo-Won was a "no," Hak really might have been a "yes" in the king's eyes. Hak was a general and tribe chief. Kouka's strongest warrior. Her father trusted very few people, but one of them was Hak... he left her alone with him all the time. And even elevated him to a position to know all about the kingdom's operations. From the day the king asked Hak to be her bodyguard, had he already been trying to pair her with a good man who'd be loyal, honest and protect her for all her life?

Yona touches her cheek -- cathartic tears running down. The realization of the gift her father gave... she closes her eyes and smiles in profound gratitude. I was so blind, father. He was right there. Thank you.

Ao hops onto her shoulder and she opens her eyes to see the ladies-in-waiting approaching in the distance with flowers, herbs, and towels. It's time to prepare her body.

Hak relaxes in the water, trying not to think about the princess on the other side, her soft, pale skin kissed by the sunlight. Calm down. It's just tonight is a reality he never even thought dreaming of would be reasonable. The anticipation is almost unbearable.

Tonight there'll be no need to suppress the impulses he's fought most of his life. He begins to harden as he remembers the feeling of having penetrated her.

CALM DOWN. Male attendants are about to come assist with the cleansing ceremony. He does not need this to be awkward.

But man, what a relief to be marrying the princess today. All the joy, surprise, disbelief, aside, he was not gonna make it. Dead man walking. Less than 24 hours past their confessions, he'd already been inside her on two separate occasions. Three if you count when she took him in her mouth. Calm down! He's really hoped to be the kind of man who would respect and honor his lover, his wife. And if it's the princess... who is he kidding, in his heart he's only ever had room for the princess. It has always been her. Even when they were six years old. There's only ever been Yona.

Yona... he wonders if tonight she'll let him call her name.

Calm. Down.

Jae-ha was already headed to the hot springs when he found out about the "farewell dinner" he was supposed to be getting prettied up for. Two birds, then. He'd do the thing he's supposed to do while also fighting this damn hangover in a relaxing hot spring.

But as soon as Jae-Ha enters, he sees the Thunderbeast. In especially fine Wind Tribe robes. And girls all around him finalizing the fit.

"This robe is such high quality, it could even be worn in a marriage ceremony!"

"Ohh, one day Lord Hak will make such a fine husband."

"What a lucky woman his wife will be!"

"Lord Hak, must you leave so soon?"

"Perhaps you've seen someone here you like?"

The dragon's blood is boiling, "He's taken."

All the girls turn toward Jae-Ha at once. Hak turns in surprise, then desperately motions for Jae-Ha to stop talking. This appalls Jae-Ha, "You can stop fawning all over him because the girl he's with--," Hak approaches to shut him up, but now really upset, Jae-Ha continues, "Well then, perhaps you should keep at him, it appears he's not interested in being faithful. How ugly. Well, she has other arms to run into--" SMACK! Jae-Ha turns his head back toward Hak who just punched him, blood spilling from Jae-Ha's lower lip.

"Let's take this outside."

Once at a private distance, Jae-Ha looks expectantly at Hak, knowing full well his mouth could quickly get him another fist. Though he might actually like that...

"So this is how you're a lover to her? You won't tell a soul? Even women who'd like to take her place?!"

"How I am is I don't want your blood on my robes as I marry the only woman I'm interested in."

Jae-Ha's eyes go wide, a hand to his chest, though Hak wouldn't notice subtle pain like that.

"You're... that's so... how did this?"

"She might have wanted to tell you herself, but you were making such a fuss in there."

"You could have just cleared it up with those eager ladies. To someone who didn't know, it looked like you were pretending Yona Dear doesn't exist."

Hak runs a hand through his hair in frustration, "I'm not happy about it either!"

'What the hell do you mean you're not happy about it?!"

"You know how I feel about her. To marry the princess is more than I could ask for in this life."

"Than any man could, really. You lucky bastard. So what's the problem?"

"No one can know about it. Except you guys and Mundok."

Jae-Ha stares in shock, "What?"

"Soo-Won would come after her."

It suddenly all registers. And Jae-Ha feels like an ass.

"All the secrecy was to protect her. I should have known," his soft sentimentality switches into a sly smile, "Now that I think about it, it's kind of sexy. Secret lovers."

"Don't get any ideas," Hak warns.

"Now that's a good idea..." and he jokingly means it as he considers adding another secret layer to Yona's relationships.

Hak raises an arm, Jae-Ha points at Hak's robes, "Keep it clean."

Yona walks into the room the dragons have been sharing to find them being groomed by Wind girls. She laughs at the sight -- all of them getting their hair cut, even Yun. Zeno sees her and beams, "Little Miss!"

"Wow, I didn't expect all this!"

"Neither did we," Kija admits, batting a girl with scissors away from his perfectly self-kept mane.

"It must be quite the dinner we're having," Yun states, clearly unsure about all this.

"Excuse me, ladies, may we please have a moment alone?" Yona sweetly requests.

Within moments, the Wind girls are gone and it's just Yona, her dragons (minus Jae-Ha), and Yun. The boys watch Yona as it looks like she's preparing to say something. But her face is bright red. With great effort, she finally just starts--

"Hak and I... we... we were talking and... well, it turns out... our relationship..."

Yun's eyes go wide. Zeno smiles. Kija and Shin-Ah still wait for the rest of the sentence.

"...we have always been close, we've always been special to each other, but yesterday... well really, before that... we're in love."

Kija gasps. Shin-Ah leans forward.

"And being in love... there are certain complications with traveling together. Mundok had some merited concerns. So did we. But we didn't want to be apart... so this would have happened, it's just now happening much more quickly than we imagined..."

"Spit it out, Yona," none of this has been news to Yun so far, but he also just wants to put her out of her misery.

Yona takes a deep breath, "The farewell dinner is cover for Hak and I's secret wedding ceremony. We'd like you all to be there."

Yun surprises Yona with an instant hug, "It's about time!"

"We're happy for you and the Mister, Little Miss!" Zeno beams, not at all surprised either. He's been watching and waiting for this.

Kija is still in shock, "I hate to be prudent at a time like this, but are you sure about marriage and to a beast? No one should be forced into marriage. And in secret? Did he... do anything to you?" Suddenly Kija is realizing what that beast is going to do to her and starts hyperventilating.

"Breathe, Kija," Yun sighs.

"I'm touched," Shin-Ah is smiling, "To be included in something this special."

"Because to us, you are most special," Kija has regained his breath.

Yona smiles that he's already coming around, but then realizes, "I'm sad Jae-Ha isn't here. ...I haven't even seen him since yesterday morning."

"Don't worry about that Mister," Zeno encourages, "He's around. He'll be there."

"You know," Yun begins, "If Hak is your husband, Yona, then you're gonna have to take care of him from now on because I've had enough hassle feeding that beast."

Yona's eyes fill with love just thinking about him, "He's really a pain, isn't he?"

"You don't have to tell me."

Yona's eyes light up -- she turns to see Jae-Ha in the doorway. She bounds and leaps into his arms. He smiles at her immediate and plentiful enthusiasm for him. Oh what she does to him, too.

Yona pulls away and looks up to see his bloody lip, " Oh no..." her eyes go wide, realizing what Jae-Ha just said, "What did he...?"

"It's nothing, Dear. What's more important is that I've come to get you. I've been given the task of bringing you to your very important engagement. Your last flight as a free woman..."

As Yona realizes Hak told him, although also punched him, and that she really is just about to get married...

World: As toll in Laos shifts, confusion mounts

PAKSONG DISTRICT, Laos — Bounna Eemchanthavong was trying to do math that refused to add up: About 650 people lived in his remote village in southern Laos before it was devastated by a dam failure, and only 65 of them had been spotted at two shelters where survivors gathered.

But local officials were telling him that only 10 people from the village were officially missing, Eemchanthavong, 61, said Friday.

“I don’t know if that number is correct,” he said at one makeshift shelter, a converted primary school several dozen miles from his home, as other flood victims streamed past in a muddy field strewed with disposable food containers. “We’re just waiting for more information.”

While the desperate search continued, by boat and helicopter, for survivors and casualties of catastrophic flooding caused by the dam failure, displaced villagers across southern Laos were unsure if their missing neighbors and relatives had died, escaped, or were still alive but stranded on slopes, trees or rooftops, awaiting rescue.

The confusion has deepened with shifting and contradictory official statements.

Friday, an official newspaper, The Vientiane Times, reported that the official death toll had “climbed” to four, contradicting earlier reports in the state-run media that had put the death toll at 27.

“It’s hard to know if they were lying now or if they were incompetent before,” said Ian Baird, an expert on Laos at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, referring to Laotian officials. But he said the confusion was to be expected, with a risk-averse authoritarian government in a poor country that is not accustomed to responding to disasters of this magnitude.

Also unclear were the scale of the search and rescue effort, and how well it was going. The state media has said that the dam failure made more than 6,000 people “homeless.”

But as of Friday, the government had not explained precisely how many of those newly homeless people — minus the 131 it said were officially missing — had been accounted for.

The United Nations said a day after the accident that about 1,494 people had been evacuated and registered at temporary shelters.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Cambodia, where floodwaters from the failed dam were causing flooding in the northern province of Stung Treng, the provincial government there said in a statement that 1,289 families had been evacuated. Cambodian state media had reported a day earlier that they were evacuating as many as 25,000 people. The reason for the discrepancy was unclear.

“The situation is not so serious yet,” said Mao Hak, deputy director general of technical affairs at Cambodia’s Ministry of Water Resources.

The failed dam that was breached Monday amid heavy rains is one of several dams in a billion-dollar hydroelectric project that is under construction. The state-controlled Lao News Agency has published two wildly different estimates of how much water was released, but even its lower one — roughly 17.7 billion cubic feet of water — would be enough to cover an area the size of Manhattan in water 28 feet deep.

The firm behind the project, Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy Power Co., is a joint venture of two South Korean firms, one from Thailand, and a state-owned Laotian firm.

Questions have been mounting this week about the speed of the one-party state’s response, the quality of the companies’ work, and how much effort was made to warn villagers. The Korean firms have acknowledged that they knew the dam’s condition was deteriorating the day before it failed.

Friday, the Lao News Agency quoted Khammany Inthirath, the minister of energy and mines, as saying that what the agency called the “collapse” of the dam was caused by “substandard construction.”

Richard Meehan, a former dam builder and former adjunct professor at Stanford University’s School of Engineering, said that the dam failure sounded to him like a case of “failure by internal erosion” caused by construction defects like inadequate foundation preparation, bad grouting, and high-risk design configurations.

“These are of course all the more likely when the project is deeply profit-driven, geographically remote, and managed by multiple entities with conflicting interests, poor communications, and zero patience for what they take to be fussy details or delays,” Meehan said in an email.

One of the South Korean firms, SK Engineering & Construction, said Friday that it did not want to comment on the minister’s statement until the causes of the incident had been determined by a formal investigation. It said it would take responsibility if the investigation found the company was culpable.

“But right now, we are focused on relief efforts and minimizing the damage,” said Kwon Kyok-jin, a company spokesman.

The other South Korean company, Korea Western Power, said it had no comment on the minister’s statement. It said it was supposed to operate the power plant after it was completed but was not directly involved in the construction of the dams.

A representative for the Thai company involved in the project, Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding, declined to comment on whether the construction of the failed dam was substandard.

At makeshift shelters across southern Laos, flood victims spoke of harrowing ordeals and searing losses.

At a shelter near the southern city of Paksong, a 30-year-old woman from the Talieng ethnic-minority group described losing her mother in the floodwaters. “My husband couldn’t hold on to her, so she got swept away,” said the woman, Phorn, who goes by only one name.

Sone Saenkanya, 43, said that 40 or 50 people from his village, Kaeyai, were still missing. “I think all those people are dead,” he said, his eyes bloodshot, standing on the porch of the converted primary school in a green sweatshirt.

Back in a flood zone near the dam, a five-hour drive from the shelter on rutted roads, the waters were beginning to recede. But the scenes there were anything but normal.

In Khom Kong village, Wanphaeng, 36, returned to her general store after trudging through knee-high muck. Thursday afternoon, dead livestock were scattered nearby, and stray dogs wandered around in search of food.

Inside, Wanphaeng, who goes by only one name, found shattered bottles, broken auto parts and a basket holding three dozen eggs. She began to clean off the mud with a dirty rag.

“This is all we have,” she said.
