(Sorry, this turned more into a rant on (my view of) the vegan Community in general. It's not intended as an attack on you or how you run your blog, I just...got a bit swept away after reading a post of yours >.>) Hi just saw your post about Gary outing himself being a piece of shit once more and I'm a bit ??? Like he made a Video straight up saying he gives more of a shit about the mule given to freed slaves than the black people themselves in 2015! And sure you can't know/remember everything about a person but...like...between him, that vegan teacher and the whole...freelee/raw vegan "culty" shit, Time and Time again pretty obvious shitty people get propped up and seemingly excused with "Yeah, I wouldn't be that extreme, but they are vegan, they must be a Good Person. It's fine." No it's not! And it makes it so hard to find actually intersectional vegans cause...there's also so little cross promotion of smaller Voices. Like so much time is spend on arguing with meateaters while the people just showing how they live ethically and how you could do too easily go ignored. (And maybe thats just my Internet diet tbf). I mean if the only thing you need to have big parts of the vegan Community come to the defend or tactically ignore your shittyness is to be white,cis and vegan it's no wonder the fashists feel comfy here. Idk, I just..Everytime I find the spare Motivation to get involved in the "fight" so to say, most I see is infighting, excuse of shittyness, attacks on minorities, bad health advice and torturevids. With barely any tracable Change in the general public (or at least their view on us). Sorry this got a bit weird at the end. It's just frustrating to watch and I guess I needed to vent somewhere. Never feel sorry for venting! And I mostly agree with you, I do think that vegan activism cannot just be showing like plant-based foods and stuff. And I do have a past post on effective activism here. But I def agree with your assessment on celeb culture within the vegan community (one reason I do my best to just ignore it and separate myself from all that influence/celeb stuff) Unfortunately the vegan community is like every other community where those with the loudest voices are often those who are white, cishet, able-bodied and middle/upper class. Just look at the feminist movement for example which has elevated folks like Germaine Greer, Gloria Steinem, Naomi Wolf, JK Rowling, Lena Dunham, RBG etc.

And I get how disheartening it can be when most vegans are from marginalised communities yet those with the loudest voices who get the most notoriety can be super problematic folks. But there are so many vegans putting in the hard work every single day to advocate for this social justice movement, to defend the victims of this injustice. Vegans of all backgrounds.

Oof, here we go: The thing that has bothered me from the beginning is how easily misinformation spreads on this website. One dumb claim reblogged by a big blog and it’s not containable anymore, no way to reach people believing the misinformation, no matter how many corrections you add. Never mind that the corrections often are dubitable as well, and that this blue hellsite is a sea of gullible people who will.not.click on links and check if what they’re reading has any foundation in reality. And/or unfortunately very often people lack the scientific literacy to understand the sources of their arguments or do not really know how to properly source to begin with. In a related vein, this site’s format does not allow discussion (which big, modern sm does, tbf?) and it’s exacerbated by what I call “tumblr discourse” (don’t think it originated here and it’s certainly happening everywhere now, but I’ve seen this form of rhetoric on here first). It basically is not allowing nuance in discussions and opinions. If you don’t agree with me you’re wrong on everything, you’re a nazi and a monster, you must die. If you agree with me you’re a perfect angel without fault and a heart pure as snow. This is dumb yet harmless in fandom fights, but if it spreads to more serious issues it’s frustrating at best and fucking terrifying at worst. There’s a culture on this site that encourages seeing things in black and white, with no in-between. But that’s not how the world works; it’s big and complicated, everything is, and most issues cannot be summed up with easily chant-able slogans or quaint hashtags. And those issues cannot be solved by reblogging half-truths or shouting at people who only agree with you on 15 instead of 20 points. This should be obvious to people who approach things with even the littlest bit of critical thought, but even that is too much to ask sometimes and yeah, I deeply deeply hate it.

That big rant out of the way, there are many reasons why I’m still on this website: it truly is one of the last sm where you don’t feel the pressure of creating content and being constantly judged. If you want to sit here and like pretty pics of hot actors, you can do that, same thing with pics of the other, more random stuff. If you want to make dumb jokes all day, you can do that, if you want to squee over superheroes you can do that, and if you want to indulge yourself in your tentacle sailor porn au daydreams, you’ll probably have to block a few asshats but you totally can do that too. No need to prove yourself with your looks or your wit or talents, you can be your own kind of weird little shrimp and have fun being it. And you most likely will find like-minded people. I did and some of them have become my best friends, who I regularly see and/or talk to, who live three streets away from me but are also spread across the globe and have given me a better, broader understanding of the world.

Hey there! I have a TUA theory that's been going through my head for weeks, and I'd love to hear what you think of it/if you can expand it in any way. Basically, I wonder if the powers the Hargreeves siblings have are somehow linked to the country they were born in. Luther, who has a Norther-European-sounding name, has a Viking's strenght, Klaus is from Austria/Germany, countries with a long history of wars (and therefore, death), Vanya is from Russia, homeland to great composers... Hey! Oh wow, thank you so much!! It makes me so happy to know people are enjoying my blog - so much so that you started your own, that’s amazing! I’m looking forward to seeing what you write: this is a great theory to start with, and I have had some ideas about the characters’ origins before, so let’s see what we can tease out of it: Now, let’s start by saying that we don’t have actual canon confirmation of the siblings’ origin and ethnicities (at least not that I can recall). For one, it’d be inaccurate to try and assume anything from the comics because the style is not true-to-life. However, what we can say is that Netflix’s casting choices for the show brought a much clearer diversity to our (anti)hero family. This is a good backlash against the prevalent whitewashing in tv and film (specifically Hollywood) of the last few years, but (1, is it diverse enough? and 2) it raises the question of how far we should read into the ethnicities of the cast as reflective of the characters. We must be careful not to 1) confuse comic canon with tv canon, and 2) conflate or assume things about a character identity based on assumptions about the actor/actress, unless they are qualities the cast themselves want to give their character. For instance, I’ve no idea if Cody Ray Thompson is Jewish, but he has confirmed (along with sharing a ton of other personal headcanons) that Dave was Jewish, based on Dave’s surname in on the dogtags. Meanwhile, Robert Sheehan disguises his Irish accent, therefore we can’t assume Klaus is Irish just because Robert is. Accent is a pretty big signifier, tbf, so this one is probably pretty obvious.

So what can we use as identifiers? Language cues, for one. Although it’s not conclusive evidence, we can theorise that Klaus knows a little German, and speculate that he wanted to feel connected to his German/Austrian heritage and distance himself from his upbringing. Therefore, from a linguistic perspective, names are also quite telling.

(They could have always been picked out of a hat, of course, but that’s no fun, and name meanings are so beautifully subjective.) This actually ties in with my own ideas on name analysis and what they can tell us about each character. (It’s in my drafts somewhere, but it’s only rudimentary so far). I was inspired when I saw this post [x]. What I had not considered, though, is how their heritage might be alluded to through their powers. The point about Russian composers is really interesting. Of course, other countries have great composers too, so how do we prove that link? If I had any classical music knowledge, I’d look through both the comics and the show for songs Vanya plays, or music associated with her in the show, or see if there’s any background details that could point to Russian composers in association with her character. Klaus, Germanic, means ‘victory of the people’. It originated from the Greek Nikolaos (coincidentally… so does Nikki. Just throwing that out there). It sounds heroic, but Klaus is decidedly anti-heroic for most of the first season. So perhaps we can interpret him as, quite literally, not living up to his name. Then there’s the elephant in the room: his untapped potential. Within that meaning, ‘victory of the people’, there’s connotations of conflict (and therefore death); revolution; the underdog rising up out of oppression. As Klaus does. Of course, if we’re talking about German heritage and conflict, we’ve got to mention WW2. There could be tenuous parallels to be made between Reginald and toxic ideologies like Nazism, and the outfit he wears as he stands in the door of the mausoleum did remind me of the uniforms of SS soldiers in Schindler’s List. But honestly, that would need fact-checking against reality, not another movie, and I don’t really want to touch Nazism any further than that without proper research. Nonetheless, I do wonder what the reaction would be to a man with a German name meeting a man with a Jewish name just 20 years after the end of WW2. However, I’d be more inclined to think about that name meaning again - victory of the people - and how it might allude to the Berlin Wall. But again, I’d need to research, because I know next to nothing about it. Could any of this explain his power to see the dead, though? If Klaus was intended to be Germany personified, specifically history of Germany wars and ideological conflicts, I’d say - it’s a stretch. There could be something there about carrying your past with you, learning from it instead of rejecting it, but it’s too vague. I also had brief thoughts on Luther. It is also a Germanic name, likewise derived from Greek, and means ‘soldier of the people’. In Greek, it derives from a word meaning ‘free’. Now, Luther is the conventional hero to Klaus’s antihero. (Does that place them on two sides of the metaphorical wall?) Where Klaus does not live up to his name, Luther does. He is the people’s soldier, with the strong moral conviction to protect and dish out justice. To that end, strength plays into that image. That said, I don’t know if there’s any signifiers from Luther’s character about his ethnic origins other than his name. However, the German theologist Martin Luther, founder of Lutheranism, is thought to be a key namesake for ‘Luther’. Martin Luther was seminal to the Reformation of the Roman Catholic Church, from which Lutheranism was born. Of course, the topic of religion might not relate directly to Luther, but the ideological crisis surrounding the Protestant Reformation - devote worship of a higher power, and a crisis of free will following challenges to predestination (all events in one’s life are predetermined by God) - could be equated with Luther’s crisis of faith in Reginald. All that being said, I also have a very vague recollection from my research that it also literally means ‘strong’. So. Mystery solved?As for Five, I really don’t think we can conclude anything that wouldn’t be pure headcanon. He’s an enigma, and is likely to stay that way. The only thing I can say is that his name - just a number - makes him elusive, hard to pin down, just like his powers. And, just a final thought: what purpose would it serve, to have heritage linked to powers? Sure, there’s the implication of the effect it has on identity as a whole, which is the underlying assumption of this entire post. But what else does it imply, to use these powers for good (or bad)? Global unification? We know that Hargreeves’s entire purpose for the Academy is to ‘save the world’, but even though they are facing down the apocalypse, the show makes it feel very personal, not universal. A family united.

Trekkin'

At risk of this blog going the way of all my other communications from abroad - i.e. boring - I vowed not to write again unless something awesome happened! Cool, fun, enjoyable and interesting things have been occurring but nothing I could justify writing a whole blog post about. Finally we did something to enable to me to break the silence. Yesterday we (meaning Your Humble Narrator (I read A Clockwork Orange over Easter) and the three Leicester lads - Adam, Chris and Ollie) set off to find the waterfall. We read about it in this little handwritten guide by previous elective students and Laurent (the hospital administrator and all round great guy) agreed to take us because he'd never seen it himself. So Laurent got the rough directions off a mate and about 10ish we set off into the woods. This wasn't as easy as it sounds. Sure we started on a dirt road, which then gave way to a dirt path but this soon degraded to worn grass and then no clear path at all. Plus we were constantly having to duck down and squat walk under thick spiky bushes which ripped our clothes and skin. The good news is we saw some monkeys! The bad news is that Laurent couldn't find the right way to the waterfall and so by half eleven we were back at the house. Hang on a tick, that's not very thrilling. Correct, I enjoyed it, but definitely not blog worthy. But wait, because we set off again. This time we started at the dam and followed the river - pretty decent way to find a waterfall tbf. And when I say we followed the river, we literally walked the length of the river to find the waterfall. This is dry season but only just so it had rained pretty heavily a couple of days ago. This left the riverbed in a particular treachous state of seeming like solid ground but infact being deceptively deep liquid sand. This caught all of us out a few times, sometimes you could run across it like some sort of mad lizard/Legolas like character but in general we soon learnt to stick to the solid river banks. However this had us fighting with the spiky bushes again and to traverse some sections we had to leap between the more solid patches of riverbed or use long sticks as a third leg to lean out into the river with our feet on the bank. Occasionally we would reach a big stretch of boulders and have to leap from stone to stone. That was super fun and sketchy (especially if you forgot to bang the slippery mud off your shoes from the previous section). At one point Chris was slightly ahead, just about to jump down a particularly high sheer stone and then he literally dropped out of sight. He had fallen over two metres but somehow his phone (which smashed against a rock) and himself were completely fine! Ollie wasn't so lucky, didn't hurt himself but still had a fall a bit later on. Basically the river pooled and we had to scramble over some rocks to either side of it to get around. Ollie was standing on a rock in the middle of the water, about to jump to one of the sides but he thought he better get rid of his walking stick first so he threw it on ahead and the momentum carried him clean off the rock and into the pool. Turned out the water was chest deep! It was hilarious but all of us held back the laughter until Ollie laughed first. Poor fella was soaked in slightly grimy water but he didn't hurt himself or damage his phone or anything. This is where the trekkin' started to get really fun. It's incredibly hard to put into words and I don't think the photos do it justice. But basically after a while it stopped being mostly muddy riverbed and a few rocks and changed into lots and lots of progressively larger boulders. We were having to find our own path, try one way and then climb back if there was no further way down and go the other way. We were doing larger and larger controlled jumps down onto whichever rocks looked flattest below (by this I mean sitting down, legs dangling and sliding ourselves off to minimise the distance to the rock below). At one stage we had to do a controlled 5m slide down an over 45° slope; the whole time just guessing this was the best route. Eventually we climbed over some rocks and saw the Rift Valley floor peeking out ahead. We had actually trekked to the edge of the valley. The sun was glaring, we didn't have much water and this is where the route got really really really steep. But to go back would probably be impossible and take ages. So we pushed the collective thought that "a broken ankle here would take about 24 hours to make it to an orthopaedic surgeon" out of our heads and we pushed on with the trek. It soon became blinding obvious that not only had we found the waterfall, we were literally climbing down it. That's right, we were climbing down a dry waterfall. Some bits were so steep that we had to lie flat on our stomachs and feel down the rock with a foot to find a purchase and then scramble down like a ladder before directing the others to the same foothold. But slowly but surely, spending longer and longer choosing a path each time we made it carefully down the valley wall. Towards the end it ended up being a bit of a race against time as the boys started to feel fairly dehydrated and the water had dried up a while back. Once we hit the flatter end part of the trek we marched pretty quickly to the house at the bottom of the waterfall. Conveniently this was owned by Laurent's mate and he extremely kindly went off on his motorcycle to fetch cold water and soda for us. Then Laurent got the hospital ambulance to come and pick us all up so we wouldn't have to walk via the long winding road back up to the hospital. Yesterday's experience was one of the best treks I have ever done in my life. The terrain we crossed was incredibly challenging and the views constantly breathtaking. But the biggest part for me was the fact we had to constantly choose and reevaluate our own path. Once we hit the riverbed Laurent was just as clueless as us about the route. But we worked together and made our way to the valley floor. As I said before the photos won't quite do it justice, but maybe you'll be able to imagine just how big the boulders were and how steep some of the scrambles were. PS - we saw a baboon at the waterfall!
