Green Party deputy leader Jonathan Pedneault is planning to run for a seat in the House of Commons in an upcoming byelection in Montreal's Notre-Dame-de-Grace--Westmount riding.
The 32-year-old ran on a joint ticket to share the party leadership in November with longtime member of Parliament Elizabeth May.
The party's constitution has not yet been changed to make the pair co-leaders so Pedneault is the deputy leader.
The Notre-Dame-de-Grace--Westmount seat was created in 2015 and the area has long been considered a Liberal stronghold.
It was last held by Liberal MP Marc Garneau, who announced his retirement earlier this year.
A victory for Pedneault in the June 19 vote would see him join May and Mike Morrice as Green Party MPs in Ottawa.

Labor says its candidate has held on to the Top End seat of Arafura in this weekend's by-election, with Manuel Brown set to represent the seat in Northern Territory parliament.
Mr Brown has secured 66 per cent of first preferences with more than half the votes counted, beating Country Liberal Party (CLP) rival Leslie Tungatalum.
Chief Minister Natasha Fyles declared the victory on social media after two hours of vote counting.
The result leaves the Labor government's majority unchanged with 14 out of 25 seats in parliament.
Only around 58 per cent of over 5,500 voters cast a ballot in the election, which Labor previously held by a 4 per cent margin.

“Electorate Is Bribed With Jobs, Is Claim,” Toronto Star. May 19, 1932. Page 26. ----- Speakers for Harry Price Heckled by Brown’s Line Residents ---- Alderwood, May 19. - Frequent heckling interrupted Conservative leaders speaking in behalf of Harry Price, Conservative canddiate in the forthcoming West York by-election, at a meeting of Brown’s line residents in Sir Adam Beck school last night. Hon. W. G. Martin, Ontario minister of welfare; J. Earl Lawson, M.P. for West York; Karl Homuth, Reeve MacDonald of New Toronto and the candidate were the speakers.
Hon. Mr. Martins declaration that the Conservative government is fighting a square fight in the West York campaign was interrupted by a heckler who charged that Mimico hospital has been laying off men, but now, on the eve of a by-election, ‘you can’t move around there for employees.’
‘There has been no attempt to bribe the electorate,’ the speaker replied. ‘The government is endeavoring to cope with the unemployment situation in every way.’
‘The depression is sweeping the entire world,’ he declared.
‘Except Russia,’ came an interruption from the back of the hall.
‘Would you rather live there than here?’ asked the minister. ‘Why not?’ was the retort. ‘We’re not getting anything here.’
‘No suffering or want will be allowed to cross the threshold of any Ontario homes,’ Mr. Martin said,
‘Oh yeah?’ said a voice. ‘What has happened up to now?’
‘No one is starving,’ the speaker replied. ‘I do not know of any other country that is doing more for the unemployed than this province. We are in earnest about this great problem.’

#14 Crazy ass shit, 23 June
Dom's soundbite did the rounds, with a bit of Boris Polish of course, and the reaction was positive.
Things were finally looking up for Boris, I mean disaster #5928 had been averted!
He remembered the byelections, Wakefield and Tiverton & Honiton.
He was asked if he thought they'd win.
"Not really thought about it mate" he winked.
He was asked if he'd quit if they lost.
"You're a fucking mentalist, you are" he laughed, before taking another pull from his pint of Stella.

B.C. Premier David Eby has called byelections for two vacant ridings left open by the resignations of the previous New Democrat premier and a former cabinet minister.
Voters in the Greater Victoria riding of Langford-Juan de Fuca and in Vancouver-Mount Pleasant will cast their ballots on Saturday, June 24.
The Langford riding was held by former premier John Horgan from 2005 before he retired earlier this year, partly due to health concerns after being diagnosed with cancer for a second time.

The Reform candidate for the Mid-Bedfordshire by-election yesterday looks like he’s about to headbutt you outside a pub while his goth “biker mama” watches. (Labour won – phew!). Is it wrong that I do love his powder blue suit? (I would wear it with a ruffled shirt).
