“What is it, sweeting?” She murmured, hands holding your face. Her thumbs caressed your cheekbones, the skin swelling with heat.
“Nothing.” You simply said, averting her gaze. Your eyes drifted away from her blue ones, down to her crimson lips, to her pale neck, and to the carmine of her gown, and then to the gold upon her fingers. God, she was beautiful, one of the prettiest creatures you’d ever seen. However she let a smile play on her lips. It was small, corners flicking up in amusement.
“Nothing?” Carmilla repeated, her head tilting slightly, just slightly and leaning down closer to your face. “Your stares from afar are nothing?” She was teasing you, left hand moving to cradle the base of your skull, resting on the nape of your neck as her right went down to your jawline, thumb sliding over your lips.
You were cute, with your averted gaze and flushed expression. It was just like when she first met you, well, saw you. Your eyes never met hers, your voice was always quiet, too soft for her ears to catch. She picked up on your heart picking up whenever she walked near or caught your gaze, the pumps echoing throughout the walls of her palace. But now in these moments you were hers, wrapped on her finger, heart in her hands.
“Yes, nothing.” You flushed, chewing the inside of your cheek. Your weary gaze met hers, greeted with nothing but amusement and warmth.
Her lips parted into a grin, white fangs dipping ever so slightly into her bottom lip. Goodness, your voice. It was a melody, a string of perfection to her ears.
Soft, quiet, tender.
She had never loved much in this world, living a life of anguish, a life of contempt. But you… your spirit, your soul, damned to hell she was. Her love was sinful, unholy. Her heart had a yen for you, for centuries. For a love she did not know she needed.
“I have ached for you,” she murmured. “I have yearned for you. For centuries I did not know what caused my anguish.” Carmilla’s tone was tender. Something you only knew. “But you, my love. You cured it. For that, you have my undead heart, forever and always.”
You could feel the truth in her words, and your heart fluttered. You leaned into her touch, although it was cold, you warmed it.
Her lips touched yours, ghosting over your own. Her eyes were closed, as yours followed suit. Your blush grew hotter, a hand resting upon her shoulder. You melted into her, and she you.
You were hers. Forever and always you were hers. She claimed your heart, your soul. Your love.

There is a letter for Carmilla the envelope a sleek black stamped in Greed before it arrived here in Pride. In a few places, the ink is a little smudged, especially around the drawing that seemed to be handwritten. The other notable thing is that the sender seems to have crossed out their name before sending.
Tumblr media
A brow quirks at the letter she finds sitting on her desk. The Greed stamp is enough to pique her interest and she carefully opens it up.
The little drawings of ballerinas elicit a soft chuckle. As she reads the letter, here eyes widen. It was somewhat common knowledge that people knew she was dancer, but this person seemed to know who she was when she was alive.
It had been decades since the height of her fame during her ballerina years. She had assumed her name had faded into obscurity by now. To know that someone still remembered her and saw her as their idol...?
Tumblr media
It brings a smile to her face.
It appears their name has been scratched out, but if they did know one of her daughters like they implied...Then she has a good idea who this is.

I have a book rec for anyone who has been enjoying Dracula Daily and wants to know more about traditional vampiric folklore. I read this a while ago now but I recall quite enjoying it at the time:
Vampires, Burial, and Death: Folklore and Reality - Paul Barber
It might seem a little dry and academic to some, but I think it's a really interesting exploration of the ways vampirism may have been attributed to decomposing corpses.* There's also a fair bit of discussion of the usual signs of vampiric attacks, and the methods people usually took to deal with them. Some of which may be very familiar, others possibly less so in the modern day.
*This may go without saying, but you probably will want to avoid this book if any kind of in-depth discussion of corpses/decomposition bothers you. The whole idea of this book is to 'explain' vampires via forensic science as relates to corpses, so it can get a bit graphic.

top 10 books of 2022

Devotion by Hannah Kent I am incapable of being normal about this book. Read it for: the most beautiful prose, an incredibly atmospheric historical setting, lesbians + the ocean, gay devotion that makes your heart ache, a dash of magical realism.
After Sappho by Selby Wynn Schwartz Read it for: a fictionalised account of the lives of real women, finding new historical lesbians to be obsessed about, women who challenged their role in the world, a narrative voice akin to a greek chorus.
Pachinko by Min Jee Lee Read it for: a tale about how the past perpetually influences the present, an exploration of identity in the context of war, immigration, and colonialism, strong familial ties.
In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado Read it for: the courage of finding words for what you have no words for, a masterfully crafted memoir, the painful reality of abusive queer relationships.
Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell Read it for: history from an unexpected perspective, a story about love and grief, a stifling dreamlike atmosphere.
I'm Glad my Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy Read it for: a celebrity memoir focused on the experiences and not the person, a frank, self-aware, and insightful look into abusive parental relationships, dealing with grief in a tenderly humorous way.
Spell Heaven and Other Stories by Toni Mirosevich Read it for: a story about outsiders finding a community, a lesbian couple in a quaint seaside town, the importance of human connection instead of isolation.
The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel Read it for: an unabashed lesbian soap opera, a glimpse into queer history, a gentle tongue-in-cheek look at the messy lives of queer women.
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys Read it for: a classic novel reimagined, a book that shows how feminism is limited by whiteness and colonialism, the thin line between dream and nightmare.
Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung Read it for: weird and unsettling stories you will randomly remember long after you finished the book, one part horror, one part magical realism, one part sci-fi, one part the constant trauma of living in our modern world.

i have officially completed my reread of carmilla for class! it's one of my favourite novels (look, i'm a sapphic goth, what else should i be reading but the lesbian vampire novel?) and i read it aloud to my partner which was cute.
next to finish is the castle of otranto, which i'm now about 85% there and plan to read over the weekend. then it's finishing up the assigned chaucer passages, the monk and northanger abbey (the latter with my partner again)! we're making progress!
