Why can't I hold all these cool stories?

CURRENT CRAVINGS: Please see this GDoc, because I have some plots I’d like to try! I’m primarily interested in original plots and characters; setting them in original worlds or fandom worlds is fine. I am not interested in playing canons other than as side characters/world filler as of right now.

PERSONAL PREFERENCES

I’m over eighteen, and would prefer my partners are, too. This doesn’t mean I’m interested in NSFW-heavy plots; I do not write smut. It just means I’m more comfortable writing and interacting with other adults.

I consider myself to be lit-adv. I tend to enjoy partners in the lit+ category, but as long as you’re an enthusiastic and engaging partner, I don’t care about perfect grammar. I would rather write with someone just as involved and excited as I am, than I would with someone who isn't very engaging but knows exactly what to do with obscure punctuation.

I’m not interested in playing only one type of character or playing against only one type of character. I typically don’t enjoy writing with people who are only interested in playing one type of relationship dynamic or one kind of character (such as only m/f, playing the female, or m/m, playing the “bottom”). I have no problem with these dynamics or characters at all, nor do I have an issue playing against them. I just prefer more variety, compromise, and opportunity.

OOC chatter is really important to me. I can’t write with someone that I don’t feel like I can get to know. I’m looking for friends, not a faceless reply robot. I won’t communicate over any medium but Discord. I've tried Kik, Hangouts, etc.; they just don't stick for me. If you would prefer first contact be through email, you can shoot me a quick message and your handle to [email protected].

I’m fine with threading in a GDoc or a server, but I will not thread over DMs. It’s difficult to have OOC chatter and the thread over the top of each other.

If you're looking for a partner that writes a reply a day without fail, that's not me. I prefer that we don't have "posting schedules” or set posting times, because I find that it turns writing into a chore. It's great if you reply immediately, and it's totally okay if you need a week to figure something out! You’re absolutely free to poke me. I’m not always the most mindful. However, I’m not going to reply every day. Three to four times a week is my frequency.

PLOT PREFERENCES

I’m interested in both fandom and original settings, and I’m down for playing both canon characters and OCs. I don’t necessarily prefer one or the other.

I definitely prefer canon doubling from my partners in fandom plots; I mesh better with people who do a little give-and-take when it comes to that. If you only play one canon character or only play OCs against canons and won’t play canons, I don’t think we’ll work.

I can play as many characters as needed, whether it's just one or it's six. Whatever our story calls for, I can manage that. In fact, I would love to play multiple “main” pairings so we can both get what we want, versus a single main pairing (unless it’s a pairing/dynamic we both like equally well). I find more than one facet to a plot really interesting, and multiple characters helps flesh out a story’s dimensions.

I’m absolutely interested in joining groups, so please don’t be shy about asking me to participate in plots with more than two players. So long as they don’t involve me writing sexual NSFW, we’re Gucci; everyone else writing NSFW isn’t a deal breaker for me.

Multiple threads and plots at the same time are no issue for me. In fact, I love the idea that we click so well that we just can't stop coming up with good ideas! So definitely don't be afraid to pitch something new to me, whether it's because you want to switch gears (and drop a thread for another), or want to do everything at once.

Romance is a must for me! I prefer slow and agonizing journeys to get there, but my attention is best held by romantic chemistry between characters.

I can provide writing samples upon request, though I never require them from my partner. Additionally, I have some plots written out if you're interested in that sort of thing. Otherwise, we can brainstorm together!

I’m very much a fandom player. I’m always down for AUs, or inserting our own characters into the plots of fandoms! This is in no way a complete list; never be afraid to ask if I’m into something! I’ve probably forgotten a hundred things I love.

Summary: Imagine Ezekiel admiring your vast knowledge. (this imagine)

The books had called to you from the second you had walked into the annex, and you couldn’t resist spending whatever free time you had scouring through them, fawning over the information they held. Jake would offer suggestions on some of the most fascinating books, as would Cassandra, but overall, you preferred to look into it all on your own.

Not that, necessarily, you had gone in completely blind. Myths were your favorite thing, growing up, stories of the magical objects that dotted lore all over the world. Now that you knew these things were real, you were determined to see what was true.

Ezekiel had found you, one afternoon, kicked back on the staircase, back to the wall and feet just hanging out through the railing, book in your hands.

“Y/N?” he asked, curious.

“I freaked out, this morning, when I found a hand in one of the rooms. Just a hand. But did you know we have the actual Hand of Glory?” Ezekiel cocked his head, but shook his head a little.

“I want to say no, but I have no clue what you just said to me.”

“The Hand of Glory. Jones, you’re a thief, how do you not know this story?” you asked, peering up at him, and shutting the book. “The Hand of Glory is a hand, the left hand, of a condemned murderer who was hanged for what he’d done. They took the hand, and then fashioned a candle out of his fat, and when the candle is placed and lit in the middle of the hand, anyone in its presence is rendered motionless, and it has the power to unlock any door it crosses. There’s a lot of variation about the candle itself, and certain powers, but the fact is, it is, mythologically speaking, one of the best assets to any thief. Ever.” Ezekiel stared at you, baffled, as you put the closed book down on the step beside you.

“Which room did you say that was in?”

“Oh no, you enjoy it as a story and don’t even think about going to see it…” Despite the snicker, he still stared at you, and you felt yourself shift under his gaze. “…Jones? Why are you staring at me like that?” He blinked, but moved to sit on the step beside you.

“What other sorts of things do you just…know?” he asked, and you blushed, shrugging.

“I liked to read, when I was a kid. Anything that wasn’t real, to me, back then. I know I clearly grew up to be physical, but until I figured out I was good at that, I had books. Books were my friend. And I just…adored myths, you know? So I learned. And when I found out what I was good at enough to make it my job, my career, my life, I wanted to hold onto that. Hence the guard position in Cairo…and London…and New York…and pretty much any other museum on the planet.”

“Also known as a list of my favorite places to swing through,” Ezekiel smirked. You laughed, soft, and leaned over to bump him with your shoulder.

“Cairo was closest I ever came to you, after that they started handing me around like a joint at a party. Every other time, I think I missed you by a week. Stories of you were already circulating in London when I got there, but I think I reached Paris and New York before you did, barely. It was…surreal, you know? I was seconds from you in Cairo.” Ezekiel shrugged a little, and motioned around the two of you.

“You’re with me here, in the Annex,” he reminded you, and you glanced over to him, biting at your bottom lip.

“Yes…that’s true.”

“If it helps, when I was casing the museums, I started to see you showing up on the guard lists. Didn’t realize they were sending you out before I showed up, but probably it was for the best.”

“Why? Because I was the only one of those absolute boneheads who could have possibly caught you?” He grinned, catching your eye and making you grin back, as he nodded.

“Absolutely! If I ever got caught then, we might not be here right now.” You turned your head to see him, well aware that him being honest like this about getting into trouble was something to pay attention to. He looked back, both of you silent for a moment, before he cleared his throat, and motioned to that book behind you. “…what other sorts of things did you find around here?” Knowing a need for a change of topic when you hear one, you hopped to your feet, grabbed the book, and reached for his hand.

“Come on, I’ll show you. Have you heard of the megingjörð?”

“Gesundheit.” Snickering and nudging his shoulder, you started out of the room.

“Megingjörð. Thor’s belt. Doubles his strength, so, if you ever had the urge to actually flip a table, that might be the best way to try it.”

“What are we waiting for?” he asked, following as you took of at a sprint towards the room you’d found the belt in. It was very clear, very quickly, that Ezekiel was becoming your best friend, and you knew, without a doubt, you wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Since 2007, her Shadowhunter Chronicles, beginning with The Mortal Instruments (TMI) series, have amassed a huge international following. (The books have even spurred a film adaptation and popular TV series, Shadowhunters, on Freeform.) Her most fiercely beloved fictional couple? Gay demon-fighting warrior Alec Lightwood and his partner Magnus Bane, the openly bisexual High Warlock of Brooklyn.

Now, Clare and her co-author, sci-fi writer (and proud Magnus fan) Wesley Chu, are giving #Malec the royal treatment in The Eldest Curses (TEC) trilogy. The first TEC book, The Red Scrolls of Magic, is due out April 9 from Simon & Schuster. (No worries if you’re behind on TMI books, Clare says: “It would probably enrich your experience if you’ve read the first three TMI books. But if you haven’t, you can still pick up Red Scrolls.)

NewNowNext caught up with Clare for the scoop on Red Scrolls—and an insider look at the state of LGBTQ inclusion in the world of YA publishing.

For those who may be new to the Shadow World, can you give us a crash-course and introduce Alec Lightwood and Magnus Bane?

The books are about Shadowhunters, a race of people who fight demons. They have powers that they get from being part-angel, and they have a mandate to be on this earth and fight demons and protect mundanes, which is what they call regular people. There’s also people who are called Downworlders. They’re supernatural creatures we’re all familiar with from mythology and folklore—faeries, vampires, warlocks, werewolves.

So, Alec is a Shadowhunter. He’s a young man who’s very rule-abiding, very serious about being a Shadowhunter, and not very happy. In City of Bones, he meets Magnus Bane, a warlock who’s really free-spirited, fun, and pretty powerful. Over the course of TMI books, they fall in love with each other and form a relationship. Alec comes out … and Magnus has been openly bisexual since the beginning of the series … By where we’re at in the books now, they’ve been together for years, they’ve adopted two children, and they just got married.

Oh, the Lightwood-Banes are iconic. Total trailblazers. Legendary.

[Laughs] It was so fun to write their wedding!

In the past, you’ve said that YA publishers were initially hesitant to publish TMI series because it contained queer characters and a gay romance. Can you tell me more about that?

When I went out with City of Bones, that was back in 2005. I got push-back from some publishers. It was very coded. … No one actually said, “We won’t publish this book because it has a gay character.” They’d say, “Not all of these characters are ‘likeable’; maybe you could cut Alec.” I got that a lot—the idea that there was a likeability issue, but just with Alec. And then I got, “Maybe there are too many characters. You could cut Alec.” So it was very clear to me that that was what was going on. … I would also say that a lot of the push-back I got was actually after publication.

I think I was a little naïve at the time, even despite the earlier stuff. And there was a presumption, I think, back in 2005—you know, pre-Twilight, pre-a lot of things—that YA was a kid’s realm. It doesn’t make it any better, because the idea that kids shouldn’t read about gay characters is a terrible one. But there was a lot more dependence in the industry on things like book clubs in schools, school library support. … When the books actually came out, I had a meeting with the person who worked for Simon & Schuster in the capacity of selling the book to book clubs around the country. And she said, “You know, we can never sell yours.”

Wow, that’s awful.

And I was like, “Oh. No, I didn’t know that.” And she went on, like, “You know, there are certain stores that won’t take your books; there are certain school libraries that won’t take your book.” I do remember once I was in England. I’d been invited to go to this school and give a talk. I was about to get into a car to go to the school, and my publisher came out of the building and said to me, “Sorry, they found out about Magnus and Alec, and they don’t want you to come.” It was such a shocking feeling.

I feel like the climate in YA has changed so much since 2005 and is a lot more accepting of queer characters. Do you agree?

I do. I had a lot of anxiety leading up to the promotion of [TMI books] because I felt like it was important to have Alec and Magnus in this book. It was important to get these books into the hands of kids, and I felt like I constantly had to walk this line where I had to make sure there was enough Alec and Magnus in the book for them to be fully realized characters that people would care about and love. Yet, I had to be careful. I feel like now, I can be less careful. And I am less careful … There are ways I can express what’s going on—words I can use upfront—that would have been a problem in 2005 in terms of just getting the book on shelves.

I mean, we’re living in a post-marriage equality world. Things are far from perfect, but the cultural conversation at large has shifted dramatically since 2005.

It’s definitely made a huge difference. I mean, it was still the Bush administration [when City of Bones was published!] We had years of progression with Obama; we had marriage equality; and we also have a new generation with different attitudes.

I also read that you purposefully left this gap in the chronology hoping you’d get the chance to write this story. What excites you so much about Alec and Magnus’s adventures in Red Scrolls?

Partially, it has something to do with my own life: The first thing I ever did with my first serious boyfriend was take a trip across Europe. [Laughs] So with Magnus and Alec, I thought, Okay, I want to give them that really fun experience that I had. And I’m going to reference it here in this book, and I know that I can come back to this someday and do it. … I also love this category of fiction. It’s almost a rom-com, this book; it has a different tonal feel than the rest of TMI books because it’s a little bit lighter. It’s like a lot of movies I love—Charade, The Bourne Identity—where two people are racing across Europe, trying to escape the police or solve a crime, and they’re falling in love. It’s just a storyline that I adore, and I thought, I would love so much to write this story about these characters. I hoped there’d be a time where I could do that, and I’m so happy that time came.

It’s especially exciting to me as a queer YA lover to see LGBTQ characters not fall prey to the “bury your gays” trope..

Exactly. You know, getting the book that is the indulgence of a wonderful fantasy that’s romantic and fun—and none of characters are suffering simply for who they are—it’s not as common as we’d like it to be. And so, why not? If I’m going to have the one book in this series that is kind of a fun adventure, it should be Magnus and Alec’s story.

I feel like Red Scrolls gives readers a really intimate look into Magnus’s inner psyche—like, beyond his “freewheeling bisexual” exterior . Is he as fun to write as he is to read?

People often ask me if I have a favorite character, and I always say “no.” It would be like picking between your children! So I usually say I don’t have a favorite character, but Magnus is the most fun to write in a lot of ways. His interior and his exterior are … very different. When we first meet Magnus, he’s immensely confident. And one of things I do love about him is that he is willing to put himself out there exactly how he is. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have insecurities—no questions, no shadows in his past. Everyone does. In this book, we see some of the things that have made Magnus the person that he is now, some of the times he passed through when he was younger and wasn’t as confident as he was now.

Speaking of LGBTQ characters, we also get quality time with future wives Aline Penhallow and Helen Blackthorn in Red Scrolls. What was it like diving into the #Heline origin story?

I love them. They’re so much fun! I got to write about them a bit in Queen of Air and Darkness, but again, they’re really secure—they’re married, they’re dealing with outside threats … Because [Red Scrolls] is a book that focuses on romance, I figured it would be so much fun to explore when they first met each other. And that’s what I love about [Aline and Helen] in Red Scrolls, too—that Aline just tries to cover up how much she likes Helen from the minute she meets her. She’s attracted to her, attracted to her personality; she thinks she’s fantastic and brave and awesome. She’s trying to hide that, but she can’t.

Can you speak on creating LGBTQ characters who aren’t solely defined by their sexuality?

I can only say that when I created Alec, he’s based in part on a friend of mine who I had growing up. We loved science fiction and fantasy books—that was what we loved to read, what we loved to talk about. And he’d tell me, “I never see myself in these books… Just once, I’d love to read about how [a gay character like me] is a sword-wielding badass.” And I was really struck by that. So when I set out to create Alec, I wanted his sexuality to be a part of his life, but not the only or even main part of his story.

17. Describe a fic that is still in the ‘ideas’ stage.

going with the Underworld Breakout Extravaganza fic on the grounds that it least likely to ever progress past the ‘ideas’ stage:

we pick up on quentin where 4x13 left off, solemnly walking to board the Train To Beyond. only when he gets to the turnstile, instead of swiping through he freaks out like ummmm what the shit what the shit i am DEAD? and runs back to find penny like, “wait actually i am not At Peace With maybe killing myself at 26 and Ready To Move On, can i go to one of those other underworld zones, preferably not the bowling alley, but” and pod person underworld librarian penny smiles placidly if a little nervously because it’s his first day on the job and he doesn’t want to fuck it up, which quentin finds infuriating because who the fuck is this person, he can’t believe he wants dick penny back but somehow this is so much more horrible? but eventually penny’s like, yeah sure! and gets him set up somewhere cozy.

so then q is in the underworld, chilling, trying to Get Ready To Move On, which is not going great, partly because he’s spending a lot of his time showing up at penny’s job to harass him with obnoxious questions, and he starts to notice that Something Shady Seems Afoot (what? i don’t know) and tries to convince penny of this. penny brushes him off because this is the underworld, everything is great! we are a smoothly running soul processing machine! but privately is increasingly like... hmmmm. to the point where eventually he’s like “it would kill me to admit this if i weren’t already dead but you’re right, something weird is going on.” so they team up to investigate (how? don’t ask) and of course eventually stumble on... CONSPIRACY! (to what end? idk)

that is both the premise and about as detailed as any of it gets. from there my general concepts are: something major and potentially catastrophic involving the gods; quentin and penny (enlisted by a god?) need to find a way to communicate with their friends still living; eventually the whole team is working on... stopping... the Thing. idk, maybe a god-against-god showdown? and they’re like “has that ever happened” and alice is like uh the iliad? and eliot is like, how did that go for humans, and julia is like, poorly. to say the least. i’d like to loop cassandra into it for the sentimental reason that she was my favorite mythological figure as a child, which tells you a lot about my psychological make-up. something with the books, something with quests, something with destiny/anti-destiny. i’d like to write something that picks up on the thematic stuff the show really seemed to be putting down in the back half of s3 but like the more i engage with that the more plot needs to happen so it’s a trade-off, you know? i also like the idea of playing around with some lesser-seen pairings in the non-romantic sense... like eliot and kady bump into each other at an NA meeting (he’s like “i’m not an addict” and she’s like “you know that’s what addicts say right” and he’s like “YES i KNOW but like TRULY well MAYBE i mean MOSTLY but it’s mostly the drinking and i’ve really been very good but the monster put all this shit into my body and you guys had him dry out but it’s been six months since Q died and my body keeps wanting things i don’t even remember fucking taking”) and then they sort of stayed paired up because they’re also the romantic reunions for our underworld duo! but i have also never written a fic juggling multiple POVs and don’t know if i want to start now, lol. i kind of wanna bring richard back??? his story is so sad :( every time i open up my brainstorming doc i wind up being like “note to self figure out what’s going on in fillory” and then i never do. at some point quentin and penny work their shit out. as you can see i am Great at Plotting, this is definitely a skill i have. lmao.

19. What’s your favorite character headcanon?

this is a bummer one and probably not exactly what is meant by headcanon but what came to mind is that i read quentin’s relationship with his dad as very inflected by the fact that ted spent basically his whole life dealing on and off with low to moderate grade depression that came and went but was never diagnosed because he was a Boomer Dude who very early internalized that Men Don’t Talk About Their Feelings, so when things started getting bad for Q he had a lot of fear about his kid turning out like him but still had never really received the vocabulary to talk about this stuff in a subjective, relational way beyond the world of “are you taking your meds.” this to me is like one of those things that is so wrapped up in how i read him and Q and their dynamic that it really does feel canonical but i am told not everyone immediately extrapolated this entire concept from that line about how no one came to his funeral, lmao.

on a lighter note i still make myself laugh remembering the post i made about how margo has more than once taken playlist rights away from a very drunk eliot bceause for the last time el no one cares about sophie ellis-bextor.
