I did in fact rewatch s2 ep2 for the rewrite. God its like. Actually is genuinely just the shows worst episode huh

YOU USED IT AS AN EXAMPLE IN THE TROPE TALK!!!!

It is my favorite and I require to know your thoughts on it.

It's. Hm

So I think it absolutely accomplished what it set out to do, which means it is a successful work of art. But I think what it was aiming for didn't work for me?

In its efforts to play with centaurworld's ridiculousness versus the gritty nightmare of the "real world", it tonally undercuts almost all of its profound moments and then tries to get profound character moments out of squeeky-toy inflatable cartoon characters. Of the main cast, Horse and Wammawink are basically the only ones who get sufficient development to feel like real characters capable of carrying impactful moments, and the rest of the crew are basically walking punchlines - even speedrunning their respective Tragic Backstories doesn't do much to strengthen them, because in the present of the show they're fundamentally joke characters incapable of emotional subtlety. It kinda feels like if a Looney Tunes episode randomly dropped a flashback to baby Daffy Duck being moses'd into the bullrushes as if that mattered to how he functioned now. Plus, once we start jumping back to the Real World again, it turns out all those characters are also wacky in their own way - lots of very quippy dialogue and self-referential humor. Instead of Horse feeling broadly representative of her world's tone, she feels like the most serious character in the entire show - at least until season 2 where her dialogue starts being 50% fart jokes by volume.

Overall I think I loved what they set up in season 1, but not how they paid it off in season 2. There's the themes they establish in season 1 of how centaurworld has a cartoonifying effect on everyone who comes there, and the way this plays to Horse early on is full on cartoon body horror - a realistic horse slowly and inexorably transforming into a parody of itself. I thought that was a fascinating way to frame it, and it was nightmarish to contemplate! It comes to a really strong head in the Whaletaur Shaman episode when her friends seem to finally realize how much she's been struggling and suffering and how, despite it looking like a big joke to everyone, it's profoundly unfunny to her. But while she gets a nice emotional resolution at the end of that episode, the underlying horror is never addressed again. She still seems unhappy with her new cartoon body, but the transformations are from this point forward framed as uncomplicated positives that everybody thinks are funny.

It's purposefully blending comedy and horror together, but the execution feels like the disparate ingredients are hindering each other's effectiveness. The horror stuff rarely gets sufficient gravity and is just left as Hey Look Horrifying Implications, and the jokes are often undermined by all the seriousness left lying around. It's a flavor combination that doesn't work for me.

And then the stuff with the Deertaur and the Princess is incredibly interesting and profound and tragic, and I don't understand why it's happening in the same show as everything else?

Also, this is a minor nitpick, but the musical numbers were astounding in the first season but seemed to experience some sort of weird categorical downgrade in season 2. All the solid numbers were reprises from season 1.

Centaurworld was doing something very much on purpose, and I just don't think I got what that something was.

im stubborn and i like talking here's the reasons i put every character i did in side a into the tourney. I'll do side b later cause i gotta go to bed soon

important first note, quite a few of my decisions were because i was trying to get women in here and it was getting desperate because i had to cut out a lot of women for only being "just some guy" because they were written by a misogynist that made her sit on the sidelines and cheer for the male leads. The Woman Situation Is Always So Fucking Dire.

anyways on to the actual contestants im gonna start with the characters that have been causing the most people to start up shit about them not being just some guy

barry bluejeans (taz balance): 2 submissions, personal bias. i think a lot of people are misunderstanding what this tournament is tbh. this isnt about the "normal" characters, tho normalcy does play a factor in it. this is about dudes who are just some guy. there is a difference. barry is a dnd npc who wears blue jeans in a fantasy world and he loves his wife. yes he is a lich. yes he is involved in the main plot. he's also just chillin. like if the plot didn't happen the way it did barry would be playing sudoku or crosswords. he'd be an average man in a very fantasy world. he is so average and human its funny. he is just some guy

tommy (hlvrai): 1 submission, personal bias. his just some guy energy is so there. he gets a propeller hat that does nothing when all of his crew is getting cool guns and upgrades. his life goal is to go home and take his dog for a walk. he gets a chuck e cheese birthday party. he sounds like he's going to burst into tears at any moment. compared to the rest of the crew, tommy is comedically just some guy

ulala (persona 2): 1 submission, description swayed me. it described the list of characters in persona 2 and ulala was just "your roommate that wanted to go to a party". that's hilarious. also i was getting fucking desperate for women that didn't suck ass as i stated above

apollo (ace attorney): 2 submissions, personal bias, descriptions swayed me. yall the submissions for him were so fucking funny. he's just a lawyer. he just wants to do his job but he lives in the ace attorney universe so everything is fucked all the time. he would've been a normal lawyer if he hadn't met phoenix wright. he's just chillin.

ok now here's every other character

sasha james (tma): 1 submission, friend bias, good description. i asked r if i should put her in because they know tma and they said yes. submission described her as loving to organize and avoided many monsters by being just some guy.

reigen arataka (mp100): 2 submissions. i thought it'd be funny and i was right. he is also just a normal man pretending he's not and he refuses to give up the bit he 100% deserves to be here

joy (underworld office): 1 submission, friend bias. the mc is going through wild ghost related problems and she's just going . hey man. you good??? r's sister submitted her and im not letting her down dude she's awesome

junpei (zero escape): 3 submissions, personal bias. he is literally the only character who has no connection to the larger mystery he's just there because he loves 1 girl. he's PAINFULLY and VITALLY just a dude. i need him

horse (centaurworld): 1 submission. i thought it'd be really funny to include just a horse. her name is horse. thats fucking awesome dude

phone guy (fnaf): 2 submissions. he was the only character from fnaf that got more than 1 submission and there were like 9 fnaf submissions i kinda felt bad tbh. he was also the best example of just some guy out of all the fnaf submissions

gordon freeman (hlvrai): 1 submission. he is a guy playing a video game. he is the straight man to the rest of the crews antics and by god he plays his role well

joshua gillespie (tma): 4 submissions, friend bias, hilarious descriptions. he avoids getting killed because he's so good at following instructions despite him clearly supposed to be dying here. they said don't open the coffin so he didn't. simply don't tuesday

namari (dungeon meshi): 1 submission, personal bias. i like her c: she's pretty level headed compared to like. everyone else in laios's crew. she seems like somebody i could just be friends with and hang out with

emmet (lego movie): 4 submissions. honestly with the number of submissions we got, 4 submissions was basically a guaranteed entry. and emmet's whole story is about being just some guy

stahl (fire emblem): 1 submission, hilarious description. fire emblem fans are so funny. what do you mean he can only be perfectly average because everyone else improves/gets worse with him to keep him perfectly average. what the fuck. thats so good

doug (wolf359): 2 entries. i dont know jack shit about wolf359 and honestly the submissions didn't tell me a lot but it was enough to figure he qualifies and i was running out of characters that felt good for the tourney. i trust you wolf359 fans

this was the last thing I boarded on Centaurworld… I still get a little emotional thinking about it!  We only got to help out a little on the finale as we had just finished boarding The Hootenanny and only had a couple weeks left in production- I helped out a little with punching up this song, and wanted to give Glendale her own limit break moment.

Centaurworld is still my favourite crew/job experience to date.  If I could do it all over again I would- love my herd!

That post about centaurworld i just reblogged is exactly what i wanted for tfa season 4: optimus alleviating himself of unfair blame placed on him by Sentinel and Blackarachnia, that all of their current misfortunes are their fault and it is not his job to fix them. Nor does he owe them anything, especially when he already did so much for them but they still didn't consider his feelings in the matter. Optimus finally realizes his true self worth and focuses on the things that matter to him & hi true friends are in his crew and he doesn't need to apologize for taking up space. Space that he took the time and work to create and flourish in without those two assholes breathing down his neck.

Just watched the ofmd season 2 finale and I gotta say, while I do like some moments of it I'm overall disappointed. Just the pacing was so extremely off though I don't blame the show. They clearly needed more episodes but because they are stuck with 8 instead of 10 the finale feels extremely condensed. Like you barely get to sit with any of the moments or feelings. Im really sad hbo max snuffed this show's potential by changing the filming location and cutting back on episodes :( though again I don't blame the crew, they did their best working with what they had.

I hate it when this happens to good shows. Clearest other example I can think of is centaurworld season 2 where the plot was clearly rushed along so they could finish it before netflix had the chance to cancel it. Or the owl house that was punished for lumity kiss with snubbed third season. Or Steven universe that was punished for the gay wedding

Background: Eden happened when someone tossed a Link figurine into the clone machine to see what would happen. He was a very friendly clone, always helping where he could... until the incident.

While trying to help another clone set up some tech, Eden was accidentally electrocuted. This rapidly destabilized their body, melting down in a matter of minutes. As they stumbled around, screaming for help in their last moments of life, they collapsed and melted onto the PC that he was helping to set up. Fortunately, his consciousness somehow managed to persist in the PC.

honestly, I think if you made a tier list of the worst SPOP characters, it’d come down to these three:

Sea Hawk

Swift Wind

Spinnerella (and Netossa)

my main reasoning for this is because they’re all relatively big characters. they’re recurring enough that they should have some kind of substance, but unlike Castaspella (who was just treated terribly by the show), there isn’t much to pick apart and dissect.

Sea Hawk starts out pretty okay, minus the fact his main love interest hates him so much that she won’t let She-Ra save her kingdom unless he leaves. Which, you know, is how all healthy M/F relationships start! Especially if the only thing that changes is the girl who always says no eventually says yes, because secretly she likes it. Isn’t that original and healthy? And great to show kids?

But, when, aside from that (the fact his whole romance is founded on consistently ignored consent), Sea Hawk does kinda start out as like, a real character. He’s a real person. He confides in Glimmer that he used to have a crew, and she has that nice line about how he still does and calls him ‘captain’ and everything. The writers then proceed to throw that out the window by the time S2 hits.

Sea Hawk is upgraded to afterthought-for-comedy and parallels Scorpia for his last actually meaningful moment on the show, and immediately after that is “upgraded” to comedy relief. Functionally, he serves no purpose aside from comedy relief. Instead of him having any deeper feelings about Salineas’ fall and maybe talking about it, he gets himself, Swifty and Bow kidnapped.

there could’ve been a moment in there in which Bow questions why Sea Hawk would have them kidnapped of all things, and Sea Hawk could’ve said something like:

“Because I don’t want you guys to stop fighting. Whoever controls Salineas controls the sea— it’s a big deal! As a sea captain, that is abundantly clear. But I don’t want you to get discouraged from standing against the Horde— not just for the sake of adventure, but the sake of the rebellion. Even if what it takes to get you fighting again is to put myself in jeopardy, I’d gladly do it again.”

and you know. that would’ve been cool. could’ve found a way to write something like that in.

Swift Wind, he kind of served a purpose. A lot of the show he kinda spent as a comedy relief character, but I can’t help but feel most of the jokes just… kinda fell flat. there are sooo many comedic directions you can go with a (slightly anthropomorphic) horse.

centaurworld did way more interesting horse-based comedy that wasn’t like ‘this horse wants equal rights’ because, uh. there’s no way to do that kinda of comedy that doesn’t come off super weird. i liked when Horse talked about murder. bobs burgers had a fictional horse named Jericho and he was probably more endearing.

Swift Wind had some moments, but like. he didn’t really build a deep bond with Adora. they said they got all the episodes they wanted, but SPOP would’ve benefited from an episode explaining why Swift Wind even decided to join the Rebellion.

i have a half-scrapped plot for a ‘rewrite episode’ where Swifty doesn’t want to join the Rebellion right away, Adora and Swift Wind try and gather members for Swifty’s rebellion. they spend all episode travelling and looking for horses, but they keep getting turned down up (bc not everyone is gonna want to join a rebellion) until they meet Storm, who does.

i think I had written that Adora and Swifty have a conversation about responsibility (some self-applied) and rebellions. having had time to bond with Adora, Swift Wind agrees to help with the rebellion.

and spinnerella. boy. first of all, I can’t help but feel like her design is a little disappointing, especially considering she’s the only actual plus-sized character, at least in the ‘main’ line-up. something about her entire character just feels off. her VA is unprofessional and all of her lines are incredibly generic. And she and Netossa don’t actually really have on-screen chemistry.

Netossa has some cute lines about Spinny, but then she also has that one where she says she’s gonna bring up the mind control thing so Spinny will have to do all the cleaning, like, forever. and like… is that really what you’d be thinking about if your SO was mindcontrolled? catradora has a mind control scene and first of all, it was portrayed as a very traumatic thing. secondly, Adora’s thoughts were ‘I’m gonna save u and bring u home and you’ll be safe’ which seems more realistic.

also the entire argument in S4 about whose winning more is so empty. maybe it’d be more charming if ND wasn’t Spinny’s VA and they hired a professional, but I guess they couldn’t scrounge the cash or something.

Centaurworld Cricket crew! Au Chapter 9- The Beginning of the End.

““Well…we’re here, Ranboo.” Aimsey remarked as Captainsparklez stood there, being handed the key by Ranboo. Ranboo hated to see Aimsey upset at his goodbye, he would miss his friends too. Tubbo and the rest of the herd cried into Billzo’s wool as the key was placed into position, the portal finally opening, Ranboo free to go.

““I’ll miss you guys. I promise after I stop the war I’ll try to visit you. Maybe even introduce you to Niki!” Ranboo attempted to cheer up his friend, his herd. They all lightened up at the remark, liking the idea of meeting Ranboo’s human friend. Ranboo, bowing as he stepped through the portal..was gone.

Bright. That was all Ranboo saw through the purple of the portal. He could see a bluer hue on the other side of the rift, a figure emerging from it. At first, he purred in excitement to see what looked to be his human companion. Upon closer inspection, it was a rampaging pig minotaur with a scar and blinded right-eye heading right towards him. Before Ranboo could react, a large stone was thrown at the back of the minotaur, knocking it unconscious. Niki! It was her! However, the warrior before him did not put down his sword, wary of the danger Ranboo could hold. Oh shit, she..she didn’t recognize him.

““It’s me, Niki..it’s Ranboo, don’t you remember me?” He pleaded, seeing the hostility fade from her eyes as the sword was lowered down.

““Is it really you?”

““I-it is!”

““You got kind of..squishy..” Niki remarked, earning a huff of annoyance from the sabertooth as they walked to the other side of the portal Niki had came from. Home! He was finally..home. He had looked to see the destruction before him, something he had almost completely forgotten in centaurworld. Now?

He guessed it was back to that.

““So, you met a bunch of weird centaurs, you travelled to get a key to open this portal, and you sing, dance, and have a talking tail?” Niki asked the squishy, colorful cat, his tail remarking a ““hey-oh!”

““Wait! You need to go meet Aimsey and the rest of the herd! I promised I’d let them get to meet you before, you know, stopping an entire war and hordes of Minotaurs.” Ranboo shouted as he bounced through the portal once again, dragging Niki with him. At least he’d get to say goodbye another time to the herd by Niki’s side.

Suddenly, the portal to centaurworld collapsed, leaving the two stranded in the rift. What? What was happening?

What was happening was the key was in the hands of George, the mysterious man following the crew along. The crew was trying to convince him to give back the key, to go see their friend. If only they knew who was waiting to strike behind that door..

A battle ensued once Billzo slammed his face in the protection bubble enough times, leaving the silly centaurs to confuse and distract George to put the key back in place.

““You don’t understand what you are doing! An unspeakable monster lives in the in-between and I’m the only one smart enough to keep it there!” George exclaimed as he was apprehended by Tubbo and Freddy, Aimsey putting back the key in place.

““What you say cannot  change our minds. We have to go save Ranboo and Niki from whatever is in there!” Aimsey exclaimed as the centaurs ran through the portal, leaving George to to grab his staff and look and ponder on whether to help or to leave them to die.

How could he not choose to go in to keep five idiots and two innocents from dying?

““We’re here to help, Ranboo!” Aimsey shouted as they saw the giant, black and gooey beast with the skull of a goat, it’s horns twisted into a array of branches, almost like a deers. Ranboo and Niki were being captivated by the tendrils of the beast known as XD the Nowhere King, struggling to break free. The king of Nowhere focused on the centaurs, distracted enough to let the duo free and fight the beast. Tommy barraged the King with his portal tummy, trying to steal the goo that manifested the beast, inadvertently scooping up the minotaur from before. Oh well, he’ll just clean it up later. Niki looked in confusion and awe as the King of Nowhere was being attacked by sparkle blinkies, tiny versions of centaurs, and centuarworld magic as a whole. The battle perused as hard as they could, but it was simply not enough to keep XD from grabbing ahold of each and every member of the herd, threatening to strangle them until they suffocated and were finished off. As Ranboo’s lungs tightened and tightened, he saw two figures emerge from centaurworld’s entrance, Captainsparklez and George, a man he had yet to learn about.

““He’s..here!”

““You came back for me, George!” XD said with a grim excitement, letting go of them all. He stepped forward to face the terrified human, holding up the staff glowing red in all its glory.

““I forgive you, George. No matter what.” It said before bowing down to George, who plunged the staff into its skull. Suddenly, the black gunk was spilled everywhere as the skull dissppated to nowhere. The rift now evermore opened for enternity. The centaurs and Niki were sent flying back into centaurworld, knocking into Wilbur and Techno, who happened to have came to see if the rift was open.

““I can’t believe it, you opened the rift!” Wilbur yelled, both with excitement and panic. Niki was finally able to see the weird beauty of centaurworld, centaurs met by the group all in one. Tommy was acting dramatic, having a portal pregnancy as multiple items he had stolen over the years spilled out, including the minotaur Niki knocked out.

““Oh my goodness it’s a little baby! A ugly, ugly baby that is. Ranboo can we keep it! We can raise it as our own and name it Michael!” Tubbo exclaimed as he hugged the moof minotaur, squeezing it tightly and putting into a giant baby carrier on his back. Welp, what Tubbo wanted, he got. That was good enough for Ranboo.

““Well now what do we do now that the Nowhere King XD is free?” Niki announced. Shoot, they forgot about that! Welp, time to cancel the party. George had survived, giving a grim and angry face.

““He’ll only come back stronger, now without the key here, he’ll destroy both of these worlds.” He muttered to them before dissappeared. Ranboo knew he couldn’t just leave, he couldn’t just leave centaurworld to fend for itself. It had affected them so horribly in the past Ranboo saw, he had to do something!

““We need two armies! There aren’t enough of the humans to fight. Centaurworld will need an army to help keep it safe. I’ve been scared I wouldn’t recognize anything again, but I need to build an army for both sides. Get the general Clay to help and stop this war.” Ranboo told Niki, who gave a good nod.

““Well, I get to say goodbye.” Niki sadly said as Ranboo led her to the portal again. He had a purpose, to protect this new world.

Somewhere else, a goat skull of black decaying gunk rasped a laugh, holding the staff encasing the key.

He had a new plan now :).
