Mexican biologist Yuliana Bedolla

Off Mexico's west coast, the Baja California Pacific Islands are key global nesting sites for 23 seabird species and Natividad Island shelters 90 percent of the breeding population of the Black-vented Shearwater (Puffinus opisthomelas).

Mexican conservation biologist Yuliana Rocío Bedolla Guzmán, Director of the Marine Birds Project at Grupo de Ecología y Conservación de Islas (GECI) says that invasive mammals like cats and rats wiped out at least 27 seabird colonies in the past.

The researchers have been working with fishing cooperatives to decrease the likelihood of reintroductions that would lead to expensive eradication efforts.

"In 2021, we created the local community group “Líderes Comunitarios'' formed by enthusiastic and committed women who have received formal training on island biosecurity and bird identification, and are becoming agents of change in their communities," Bedolla says.

Recently, Bedolla won a 2023 Whitley Award from UK charity Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) and will use the funding to boost the role of local women and fishing cooperative.

"The goal is to continue preventing the accidental introduction of invasive mammals on Natividad and San Benito Oeste islands by actively involving local leaders and fishing cooperatives in biosecurity protocols," she says.

"My Grain of Sand"

Bedolla grew up far from the sea in Moroleón, a small town in central Mexico, where she enjoyed being out in nature.

"But I had my Eureka moment when I learned to snorkel when I was 12 years old at a beach in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, in the Mexican Pacific," she says adding that she remembered a feeling of amazement, wonder and a new sense of connection to nature.

"That experience was life-changing for me and marked the beginning of my journey as a conservationist," Bedolla says, "From that moment on, I knew I wanted to become a marine biologist and contribute with my grain of sand."

She would go on to study Marine Biology at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico, learning to dive and study coral reefs and associated invertebrates on several islands in the Gulf of California.

Bedolla would contact GECI in the course of her masters degree and years later, after a Phd in Germany, GECI offered her the directorship of the Marine Birds Project.

Bedolla says that being from the Global South helps her to bring diverse perspectives and approaches to scientific research, which can lead to more innovative and creative solutions.

Yuliana is a marine biologist, graduated with honors from the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS).

She is a Master in Coastal Oceanography from the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) and a PhD candidate from the Justus Liebig University of Giessen in Germany. For her doctorate, she obtained a scholarship in Germany. Yuliana speaks Spanish and English and has basic knowledge of the German language. Her doctoral research focuses on the foraging ecology of three petrel species that nest in the San Benito Archipelago, in the Pacific of Baja California.

She began collaborating with the Ecology and Conservation of Islands Group, A.C., (GECI), in 2009 as a field biologist, and is currently the director of the Seabird Project, which aims to restore and conserve seabirds through the use of social attraction systems in conjunction with systematic monitoring, research and environmental education. She has carried out numerous research studies with national and international institutions. Her scientific publications in international journals focus on the response of seabirds to environmental conditions, the parasites that infect seabirds and the response of native fauna to the eradication of invasive mammals.

She has collaborated with several national seabird conservation programs and has been directly involved in environmental restoration projects in Isla Isabel, San Benito Archipelago, Banco Chinchorro and Arrecife Alacranes, related to the eradication of invasive rodents for the benefit of seabird colonies, among other island species. Her activities at GECI include project planning, staff coordination and supervision, applied research and monitoring, environmental education with local communities and dissemination of information in conferences and scientific reports and publications.

Goodbye 2022

I was tagged by the wonderful @the---hermit ! It was lovely to just sit and reflect for a bit. This definitely helped in my New Year’s Resolution brainstorming process!

What are things you've grown to like this year?

Biodesign and architecture! Also, phylogeny, paleontology, zoology, marine biology, microbiology, mechanical engineering (in principle anyway at least lol), Intersectionalism, and nutrition science. A lot of these are things I’ve liked in the past but have really grown to like and appreciate more this year! As for things that are NOT academic disciplines, I’ve grown to like solitude a lot more this year. I like quiet spaces. I like three AM walks on the beach where I can sing and only the wind and the water hear me. Oh! I also really like designing generally! I’ve grown to love making art and music and designing spaces/city planning. Making art and music has been central to my character for a good long while, but I’ve finally started being more disciplined about it, which has been VERY fun. I’ve really grown to love the (occasionally frustrating) process of just making things. As for design and city planning… design and I did not get off on the right foot last year, and for awhile I desperately avoided it. But this year, it’s been everywhere I look, just relentlessly inescapable, and I finally buckled and decided to try my hand at it again. And now I quite like it! I love breaking things apart seeing how the work, and imagining ways to put them back together just a little differently, a little better, than they were before.

What are things you've learned this year?

I’m quite opinionated, as it turns out! My tongue is a bit sharper than I’d realized, and my sense of (in)justice is more of a defining quality than I had previously acknowledged. I’ve spent a lot of years being Quiet and Obliging even when my values are trodden upon, and this year I’ve learned that an excess of quietude/passivity is not the virtue I have always assumed it to be. So I’m learning how to be Loud, which is new for me! I’ve never really allowed myself to even try that before. I’ve also just learned a lot about how to be a functioning human person, how to cope when things just Keep Going Wrong and there’s nothing you can do about it. (The secret is making jokes as often as you can.) Ive learned a lot about the kindness of strangers who witness suffering and about many of the ways to be both well and unwell. (It’s not a dichotomy at ALL, and there are so many shades of each quality!) I’ve gone through a whole series of mental resets during this year honestly. I’ve also learned a lot about those subjects mentioned in my first answer!!

What works did you enjoy this year, be it films, books or other art?

Is there something you're still looking forward to this year?

Finishing the 22 books in 2022 challenge! I completed my yearly goal of 222 books (WOOHOO!!) and am now at 237 books! Wild!! I’m looking forward to (continue) celebrating that with more 2023 Book Planning! I’m also looking forward to connecting with some friends this holiday season. 💕Also also! I’m really excited to work on planning out my next year! I have many big hopes and dreams!

What would you like to see happening next year?

A few things! I’d like to:

1) move back to the coast and work in conservation there. 2) be well enough to travel again! I’m hopeful at least! 3) read 223 books 2023. I’m sticking with my lofty reading goals. 4) get better about balancing work/school/life in a sustainable balance. 5) write one short story every three months. 6) schedule more personality system clients!

Those are the main goals for now!

African Immigrants Have Revived a Remote Corner of Quebec (NYT) Not long ago, the handful of African immigrants in Rouyn-Noranda, a remote city in northern Quebec, all knew one another. There was the Nigerian woman long married to a Québécois man. The odd researchers from Cameroon or the Ivory Coast. And, of course, the doyen, a Congolese chemist who first made a name for himself driving a Zamboni at hockey games. Today, newcomers from Africa are everywhere—in the streets, supermarkets, factories, hotels, even at the church-basement boxing club. A couple from Benin has taken over Chez Morasse, a city institution that introduced a greasy spoon favorite, poutine, to this region. And women from several corners of West and Central Africa were chatting at the city’s new African grocery store, Épicerie Interculturelle. “Since last year, it’s like the gate of hell or the gate of heaven, something opened, and everybody just kept trooping in—I’ve never seen so many Africans in my life,” Folake Lawanson Savard, 51, the Nigerian whose husband is Québécois, said to loud laughter in the store.

Half of senior staffers in Congress are so fed up that they may quit (Washington Post) When it comes to job satisfaction, members of Congress aren’t the only ones considering calling it quits. Only about one in five senior aides on Capitol Hill believe that Congress is “functioning as a democratic legislature should,” and about the same margin believe that it is “an effective forum for debate” on key issues. Given those assessments by the people who live and breathe these issues, this particularly glum finding should not come as a surprise: Almost half of senior congressional aides are considering leaving the Hill because of “heated rhetoric from the other party.” These are just some of the findings from an investigation by the Congressional Management Foundation, a nonprofit that aims to improve both lawmaker effectiveness and constituent engagement.

Baltimore Bridge May Trigger Historic Marine Loss, Says Lloyd’s of London (Bloomberg) Insurance payouts for Tuesday’s collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore could be among the largest ever in marine insurance, according to Lloyd’s of London Chief Executive Officer John Neal. “This has the potential to be one of the largest marine losses in history,” Neal said in an interview with Bloomberg News on Thursday. “It’s a multi-billion dollar loss. I think it has to be but I think it is a little too early to say what you actually think it’s going to cost.” Insurance claims for damage to the bridge alone could reach $1.2 billion, Barclays said in its note, predicting further potential liabilities of $350 million to $700 million for wrongful deaths and yet-to-be-determined amounts for business interruptions while access to the city’s port is blocked.

The Baltimore collapse focused attention on vital bridges. Thousands are in poor shape across the US (AP) After a yearlong closure, a bridge over the Puyallup River reopened in 2019 with a sturdy new span and a brand new name. It even won a national award. But today, the Fishing Wars Memorial Bridge is closed again after federal officials raised concerns about a vintage section of the nearly century-old bridge that carried about 15,000 vehicles a day. It has no timetable to reopen because the city of Tacoma, Washington, first must raise millions of dollars to clean and inspect it. Bridges fulfill a vital function that often goes overlooked until lives are lost or disrupted by a closure or collapse, like that of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday. That bridge crumpled when struck by a cargo ship, not because of poor maintenance. But thousands of others stand in worse shape. About 42,400 U.S. bridges are in poor condition, yet they carry about 167 million vehicles each day, according to the federal government. Four-fifths of them have problems with the legs holding them up or the arms supporting their load.

Gunmen in Ecuador kill 8, injure 8 others in attack in coastal city of Guayaquil as violence surges (AP) rmed gunmen attacked a group of people in Ecuador ’s coastal city of Guayaquil killing eight people and injuring eight others, the Interior Ministry said, the latest in a string of violent incidents in the South American country. It was the second mass killing in as many days. On Friday, five people who had been kidnapped were killed execution style in the coastal province of Manabi by an armed gang. Police said there were signs the victims were tourists mistakenly caught up in a local drug-trafficking dispute.

When 18 nuns walk into a Spanish bar... (Reuters) A congregation of Catholic nuns has reopened a bar in an ancient sanctuary in northern Spain, pulling pints of beer in the hopes of spreading the word of God to thirsty guests visiting the 11th-century Romanesque site. “I think plenty of people would think it’s unusual, because they’ve never seen it. But you know, it’s not a sin to drink a beer,” said Miami-born Sister Guadalupe, adding that the bar constituted an “open door for us to evangelise”. The sisters, who belong to the Pilgrims of the Eucharist order, have taken over operations at the bar in the Sanctuary of Estibaliz outside the Basque city of Vitoria from its previous owners, a cadre of Benedictine monks, who had let a local association run the bar. The monastic brothers had lived there since 1923 but left in September 2022 due to dwindling numbers and old age. Last year, 18 nuns—most of them Colombian—moved in to look after the sanctuary and its pilgrims. “I love it because I always see them so happy and with a smile, they transmit a lot of peace and joy,” Maria Elena Saez, who expects to become a regular, said of the nuns.

Slick recruiting campaigns brimming with nationalist fervor have become ubiquitous in Kyiv, the capital, and other Ukrainian cities in recent months. They are perhaps the most visible sign of a push to replenish Ukrainian troops depleted by more than two years of a brutal war—an effort that experts and officials say is crucial for fending off relentless Russian attacks. But most of the campaigns are not the work of the country’s political and military leadership. Chinese ad for under-30s triggers outcry from older job-seekers (Reuters) A job advert from a Chinese grocery store seeking cashiers aged 18 to 30 has triggered a flood of anguished social media posts from older people scrambling to find work in a sluggish economy. Some said the ad highlighted the plight of a huge middle-aged section of the population as the government focuses on fighting high youth unemployment and finding positions for another record year of college graduates. There is no specific law against age discrimination, though state media last year criticised employers for “discriminatory” hiring practices, including seeking younger and cheaper workers, in what became widely referred to as the “Curse of 35”. “I’m 29,” one commenter wrote on Weibo. “I’ve been laid off three times since I graduated. Dispute Over Conscription for Ultra-Orthodox Jews Presents New Threat to Netanyahu (NYT) Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing his most challenging political threat since the start of the Gaza war because of a disagreement among members of his coalition about whether ultra-Orthodox Jews should retain their longstanding exemption from military service. An unwieldy right-wing alliance of secular and ultra-Orthodox lawmakers, the coalition’s members are divided about whether the state should continue to allow young ultra-Orthodox men to study at religious seminaries instead of serving in the military, as most other Jewish Israelis do. If the government abolishes the exemption, it risks a walkout from the ultra-Orthodox lawmakers; if it lets the exemption stand, the secular members could withdraw. Either way, the coalition could collapse. Criticized by many Israelis for presiding over the October disaster, Mr. Netanyahu is trailing in the polls and faces growing calls to resign. But until now, there were few obvious ways in which his coalition might collapse.

U.N. observers hurt in Lebanon blast (Washington Post) Four members of a United Nations peacekeeping team were injured in a blast in southern Lebanon, near a contentious demarcation line shared with Israel, the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said in a statement. “The targeting of peacekeepers is unacceptable,” UNIFIL said, adding that it was “investigating the origin of the explosion.” The Israel Defense Forces denied any involvement. According to UNIFIL, an explosion happened Saturday when three military observers from the U.N. Truce Supervision Organization and an interpreter were conducting “a foot patrol along the Blue Line” near the Lebanese town of Rmeish. They were evacuated for medical care, UNIFIL said. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said the military observers were from Australia, Chile and Norway and said they had been “targeted by an Israeli drone.” Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Manar TV also said there was “preliminary information” that an Israeli drone was behind the attack, citing its correspondent. Neither provided any evidence for the claim, and The Washington Post could not immediately verify the reports.

Extreme drought in southern Africa leaves millions hungry (AP) Delicately and with intense concentration, Zanyiwe Ncube poured her small share of precious golden cooking oil into a plastic bottle at a food aid distribution site deep in rural Zimbabwe. “I don’t want to lose a single drop,” she said. Her relief at the handout—paid for by the United States government as her southern African country deals with a severe drought—was tempered when aid workers gently broke the news that this would be their last visit. Ncube and her 7-month-old son she carried on her back were among 2,000 people who received rations of cooking oil, sorghum, peas and other supplies in the Mangwe district in southwestern Zimbabwe. The food distribution is part of a program funded by American aid agency USAID and rolled out by the United Nations’ World Food Programme. They’re aiming to help some of the 2.7 million people in rural Zimbabwe threatened with hunger because of the drought that has enveloped large parts of southern Africa since late 2023. It has scorched the crops that tens of millions of people grow themselves and rely on to survive, helped by what should be the rainy season.

Pope presides over Easter Vigil (AP) Pope Francis presided over the Vatican’s somber Easter Vigil service on Saturday night, delivering a 10-minute homily and baptizing eight people, a day after suddenly skipping the Good Friday procession at the Colosseum as a health precaution. The Vatican had said Francis skipped the Good Friday procession to ensure his participation in both the vigil service Saturday night, which usually lasts about two hours, and Easter Sunday Mass a few hours later. In his homily Francis referred to the stone that the faithful believe was removed from Christ’s tomb after his death. Francis urged Catholics to remove the stones in their lives that “block the door of our hearts, stifling life, extinguishing hope, imprisoning us in the tomb of our fears and regrets. Let us lift our eyes to him and ask that the power of his resurrection may roll away the heavy stones that weigh down our souls,” he said.

The Memory of Venice

This year's visit of Venice Architecture Biennial was super fast. Train from Trieste to Venice with the most beautiful gaze to the Adriatic coast. From Santa Lucia to Giardini with the targetto with a lot of open question on our VAB - Cold Cases campaign in my head. What will Lesley Lokko question herself under the title The Laboratory Of The Future.

She states that "an architecture exhibition is both a moment and a process. It borrows its structure and format from art exhibitions, but it differs from art in critical ways which often go unnoticed. Aside from the desire to tell a story, questions of production, resources and representation are central to the way an architecture exhibition comes into the world, yet are rarely acknowledged or discussed."

For the first time ever, this year the spotlight has fallen on Africa and the African Diaspora, that fluid and enmeshed culture of people of African descent that now straddles the globe.

According to Lokko it is often said that culture is the sum total of the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves. Whilst it is true, what is missing in the statement is any acknowledgement of who the ‘we’ in question is. The ‘story’ of architecture is therefore incomplete. It is in this context particularly that exhibitions matter. They are a unique moment in which to augment, change, or re-tell a story, whose audience and impact is felt far beyond the physical walls and spaces that hold it.

"The Laboratory of the Future is an exhibition of six parts and includes 89 participants, over half of whom are from Africa or the African Diaspora. The gender balance is 50/50, and for the first time ever, nearly half of participants are from sole or individual practices of five people or less. Across all the parts of The Laboratory of the Future, over 70% of exhibits are by practices run by an individual or a very small team. These statistics reflect a seismic change in the culture of architectural production at large, and an even greater shift in participation in international exhibitions. The balance has shifted. Things fall apart. The centre can no longer hold," wrote in her statement Lesley Lokko.

New South exhibit in the part of the Guests from the Future under the theme of the Mediterranean Queendoms which is a continuous interior space stretching across three cities and two continents and spanning the Mediterranean.

I started my exhibition walk exactly at 10 am at the Central Pavilion in the Giardini. There are 16 practices who represent a distilled force majeure of African and Diasporic architectural production have been gathered. It moves to the Arsenale complex, where participants in the Dangerous Liaisons section – represented also in Forte Marghera in Mestre, Venice mainland, with a large-scale installation by Emmanuel Pratt - rub shoulders with the Curator’s Special Projects, for the first time a category that is as large as the others.

In the extremely well structured Giardini central pavilion there is also our LINA fellow Meriem Chabani (Algiers, Algeria, 1989). With John Edom (Portsmouth, UK, 1983) and in collaboration with Mélissa Dyminat and Marine Gilouppe presents their office New South based in Paris. The Mediterranean Queendoms is a continuous interior space stretching across three cities and two continents and spanning the Mediterranean. It is Meriem's family’s territory: an intricate, intimate infrastructure of care that is reigned over by its women – her mother, her two grandmothers, and her seven aunts. The Queendom’s houses, (in Vitry, Paris; in Algiers, and in Batna) – are its logistical hubs, collecting the family’s members in one place for celebration, mourning, and holidays. The queens come and go in permanent flux. The schedule is conveyed through rumours which may later transpire to be false. Each present is cared for, nourished, transported, entertained, clothed, and sent away with dates, envelopes of money, pots of honey, leftover food wrapped in tinfoil, ancestral jewellery, adjusted wedding outfits, medicine, plane tickets, gossip, and family secrets according to and in excess of each one’s immediate need and for distribution to those dispersed throughout the Queendom who could not be present.

We can definitely say that this year's exhibition is not about clima change but about how we will change. As Kyong Park, a curator of Korean pavilion, states "we can not control our future if we can’t control our past."

"We are not citizens anymore we are consumers participating in creating inequality," states Kyong Park.

Central to the presentation, A participatory video game allows viewers to choose actions in present and future ecocultural settings. The Pavilion encourages visitors to comprehend how global environmental challenges are founded in humanity’s prior decisions.

In this edition of the 2023 Venice Biennale, the Korean Pavilion, curated by artistic Directors Soik Jung and Kyong Park, presents “2086: Together How?” bringing together architects, community leaders, and artists to explore how people can cooperate in withstanding the current and future environmental crisis until 2086 when the global population is said to the peak.

The exhibition invites visitors to imagine an eco-cultural revolution by critically reassessing the world's capitalist, globalist, and colonial history. The viewers will be encouraged to reconsider current conditions through a participatory video game and a series of multidisciplinary installations that include photographs, drawings, models, videos, and architectural installations.

2086: Together How? presents three small communities in South Korea actively involved in regeneration projects, each with a different population and characteristics. The targeted subjects include a significant colonial center in Gunsan, the rural areas of the Gyeonggi Province, and the historic colonial center in the global city of Incheon, symbols of South Korea’s urbanization and westernization. The project’s theme addresses reconciling individualism and communalism in future humanities.

In fact, a group of architects and community leaders has conducted joint research projects with the local neighborhoods, guided by a set of dialects that have shaped our eco-cultural growth. Moreover, the project stresses how the current understanding of development has come through limitless material pleasure, permitting industrialization, colonization, and globalization to spread. According to the pavilion, the dooming environmental catastrophe will be an opportunity for humanity to create a new eco-cultural paradigm for the future.

On Monday, two Sri Lankan refugees were found on Rameswaram island and they are investigated by the Tamil Nadu Police.
