i’m sure it’s been pointed out before, but luffy’s post-wano bounty is exactly one hundred times greater than his starting bounty of 30,000,000 from the end of the east blue saga. or to put it another way, luffy’s starting bounty (at the time noted as being very high for the east blue) was one percent of his current bounty.

It’s actually really funny that they printed Luffy’s Nika form as his new bounty instead of going with his old picture because who’s gonna recognize him now? This is such a niche version of him, people are only gonna see it when he uses gear 5th, so who’s gonna look at the bounty, then look at normal Luffy, and make the connection that he’s Straw Hat Luffy

Chapter 1053 — The new emperors

And it’s here! The final chapter before the break.

Feelings, both high and low, as well as revelations are in store. So without further ado, let’s delve in!

Morgans is my fave.

Say what you will about reddit, but those historically-accurate-dudes do have their eyes with them! There’s a wild Sabo in the background! Looking all kinds of angry! WILL THE REVERIE-MYSTERY BE REVEALED AFTER THE BREAK?

Love the new bounty pictures! Kid is rising, rising, rising in my esteem, lovely little unhinged ball of metal and punk that he is.

And great subversion of expectations to give them the same bounty! Well played.

Proper, well-bred Jinbe. Love his patience and manners.

And the chaotic energy radiating from the others!

Yamato is clearly one of the team, although this could also be a “he’s enjoying his first real festival before he stays at Wano to help Momo”-type of Vivi-esque thing going on as well. Although Yamato has said repeatedly that he wants to leave and go adventuring, so that’s what I expect he’ll do.

Robin found her poneglyph! Just hoping for her to find the red one as well, although that might be this one with the shading as well. We’ll have to wait for Word of Oda for that.

Although I wish he could stop with his messiah-tendencies regarding dead people.

I get it, it’s not nice when people die. But in a story, they sometimes die for narrative purposes and bringing them back just makes the reader question the whole plot. “Welp, what was all that for?” is a question that springs to mind.

So of course Tengu-san can’t just be a sword smith. Of course he has to be the long-dead Kozuki Sukiyaki who also somehow managed to smithe several cursed blades that are still somehow good enough to be of exceptional quality that they are included in guide books on cool swords?

Seriously, not a fan of resurrecting people who (1) died in a flashback and (2) for a very good reason.

Oh well, looking forward to learning more about Pluton, at least.

Okay, new admiral is creepy and has some very unsettling daddy issues going on.

This whole spread is light an joy and pure delight. Have it all! Strawhats! Akazaya-members! Minks! Hamlet and Horselina! And oh, my weeping heart, the visual silence surrounding Kin’emon and Tsuru who are finally reunited.

And more heartwarming close-ups! This time of the rival crews, partying with the rest!

Really like Kid’s crew! Truly the most diverse one out there.

And then, the sweet little twist at the end of the Christmas cracker: the panels that summarise the extremes of my reactions to this chapter.

On one end: called it, with the new admiral being the break’s cliffhanger.

On the other: SWEET BABY GARP, BUGGY’S AN EMPEROR?

WHAT? HOW?

The last we saw of him, he’s egging his followers on after being ousted as a Shichibukai and trying to scarper in the settling dust.

…what happened in those <calculating> SEVEN DAYS BETWEEN THEN AND NOW?

…he’s getting his dream of being on par with Shanks, at least…?

Also, the flowers that spring up behind Ryokugyu are really interesting. Will he leave Wano a bountiful and green nation after the industrial wasteland brought by Kaido and Orochi, or is it a poisoned present?

Great chapter, I give it a bounty of 3 billion berry.

A nice little wrap-up with a cute little twist at the end. Take your well-deserved break, Oda!

Is Luffy going to be using his fruit a little differently now, even outside of Gear 5th? The cartoon logic seems to still be in place, so maybe he’s gained a new understanding of his DF, whereas he used to think his power was only being rubber. Or is it a lasting effect of Gear 5th? I need answers

i'm caught up with end of wano, so here's some parallels from one piece that could be or don't have to be connected, but are still pretty cool.

long post ahead & wano spoilers

protecting new era:

rayleigh protecting zoro at sabaody from an attack by kizaru, ch 511

luffy protecting law from an attack by doflamingo, with same move as rayleigh above, dressrosa ch 782

at the end of wano, ch 1055, shanks telling ryokugyu a similar thing as rayleigh above ("don't pick the buds before they sprout. their era is only just the beginning"),

shanks "when the new shoots that just changed pirating history are exhausted, (..) are you that afraid of the new era?!"

zoro king of hell

same page as luffy protecting law - with haki clashing against doflamingo, the panels after that talking about supreme king haki - qualities of a king,. in this context for doflamingo, ch 782

at amazon lily ppl reacting to luffy using supreme king haki, while he doesn't know he just did, ch. 519. "that's the haki of the chosen ones' only one in millions has that spirit!"

vs, zoro unknowingly unleashing haki of supreme king for (possibly) the first time, ch 997

and later during his rooftop fight against kaido, (and still denies/ doesn't know what they're talking about, which is very interesting). ch 1010

then during his fight with King, unleashing haki, which makes others around fall unconscious (as mentioned above to doflamingo is a sign of supreme king haki), ch 1033

and some more chapters later, claiming the title of King of Hell (funny in this context it was told to doflamingo he was chosen by the heavens, and for zoro he became the king of hell. smth smth about the character work there).,

and as always - connected to luffy and his dreams!. ch 1036

then there's the asura figure surrounding zoro's powers,

and i find it so interesting that on wikipedia about asura (which zoro's sword and fighting styles are also based on with hindu and buddhist religions) is mentioned they're "considered enemy of the gods"

i like how it's the same phrase as we also heard in the manga before form law's flashbacks about corazon, ch 764

this is in the context of the people with the D. name, and then mostly used for law himself, and luffy and how far he's come to truly wreck the world government, as well as them being a threat to the celestial dragons.

luffy and nika:

from point above, i like how the "enemy of gods" being applied to people with the name D. is also interesting in the context of luffy awakening his devil fruit powers, which are named sun god nika. (i know that in the phrase "enemy of gods" mean gods as the celestial dragons, but it's still interesting)

which doesn't take away from luffy's character as i was a bit worried at first.

he's testing the new skills and powers, and he sees how he can reach the new limits he couldn't before. it might have been the devil fruit that chose who would eat it, but it's luffy and his dream that make the decisons., ch 1045

and ch 1049

luffy in ch 507 & 1053, his core ideals are still the same

not fighting someone

shanks not fighting the mountain bandits, and luffy not understanding it, ch 1

jaya arc, luffy and zoro not fighting against bellamy, and nami not understanding at first, ch 225

and ch 1054, momonosuke telling yamato not to fight the navy guy because he wants to be able to protect wano, and let yamato go to the seas as he wants to - it's just that similar energy that luffy has when he tells someone not to fight (or when to fight), without almost any explanations.

also loved this usopp moment!, - could be paralelled to his whole character arc. ch 1036.

he's so real for saying this to kin and kiku (and samurai in general). he's always scared and sometimes can be acting like a coward, but he always, always, stands up for his crew and fights to live through whatever hell luffy puts in front of them.
