Challah French Toast sparknotes

—just <1C milk —1-2 eggs (depending on richness) —2T sugar (white, brown, even honey/maple) —1-2t v.e. —1t+ ground cinnamon —pinch of salt optional: .5t ground nutmeg, zest of lemon/orange fancified: richer milk, egg yolks, splash of bourbon/rum/brandy —butter for cooking (tastes better vs oil) —warmed maple syrup - Slice bread to stale overnight/lowest oven temp for 15-20min with flip halfway. - Mix ingredients for custard. - Dip slices for 20-30(-60max)sec per side. - Heat 2T butter in a pan on medium/med-low heat. Fry the slices (2-)3-5min/side. - Keep slices warm & with a slight crisp crust in 350F oven, while rest of the slices are being cooked. - Have warmed maple syrup ready. Top plated slices with powdered sugar. Fun fact: french toast is called “pain perdu” in France, = “lost bread”. It’s also sometimes referred to as “le gâteau du pauvre” = “the cake of the poor”.

i have been trying for three days to get french toast but theres only one place near me that does french toast outside of weekend brunches + the first day i showed up at 11:45 and found out they stop doing breakfast at 11:30, and yesterday i showed up at 11:05 and found out they'd decided to stop doing breakfast at 11 for no reason. it is day 3 of this quest and if i dont manage to get french toast today i may riot

whatever they tell you being a morning person is so hard cause if u live with other people they get pissed at you if you wake them up by walking around and doing morning things + no one in yr timezone is awake and the only mutuals you can catch on at the same time as u are the ones from opposite time zones who r staying up. but i guess it's worth for witnessing the beauty of the sunrise good morning 🌄🙏
