6.26.22 Headlines
WORLD NEWS
Ukraine: Russia strikes Kyiv as Western leaders meet in Europe (AP)
“Russia shattered weeks of relative calm in the Ukrainian capital with long-range missiles fired toward Kyiv early Sunday, an apparent Kremlin show-of-force as Western leaders meet in Europe to strengthen their military and economic support of Ukraine.”
South Africa: At least 20 dead in club; cause not yet known (AP)
“South African police are investigating the deaths of at least 20 people at a nightclub in the coastal town of East London early Sunday. It is unclear what led to the deaths of the young people, who were reportedly attending a party to celebrate the end of winter school exams.”
Turkey: Arrests in Istanbul as LGBTQ marchers try to defy Pride ban (AP)
“Dozens of people were detained in central Istanbul after city authorities banned an LGBTQ Pride march, organizers said Sunday. Turkey’s largest city has banned the march since 2015, but large crowds nonetheless gather every year to mark the end of Pride Month. Organizers called the ban unlawful.”
US NEWS
Abortion Protests: Police at Arizona Capitol fire tear gas, disperse protesters (AP)
“Police fired tear gas to disperse abortion rights supporters demonstrating outside the Arizona Capitol Friday night, forcing lawmakers to huddle briefly in a basement inside the building as they rushed to complete their 2022 session. Thousands of protesters had gathered earlier on the Capitol grounds in Phoenix, divided into groups both supporting and condemning the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade.”
Pride: Parades march on with new urgency across US (AP)
“Pride parades kicked off in New York City and around the country Sunday with glittering confetti, cheering crowds, fluttering rainbow flags and newfound fears about losing freedoms won through decades of activism. The annual marches in New York, San Francisco, Chicago and elsewhere took place just two days after one conservative justice on the Supreme Court signaled, in a ruling on abortion, that the court should reconsider the right to same-sex marriage recognized in 2015.”
US Senate: As Senate-confirmed justices end Roe, how will voters react? (AP)
“The end of Roe v. Wade started in the Senate. It was the Senate Republican partnership with President Donald Trump to confirm conservative judges, and transform the federal judiciary, that paved the way for the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling to overturn the constitutional right to abortion. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell set the strategy in motion, engineering the Supreme Court’s makeover by blocking President Barack Obama’s 2016 nomination of then-Judge Merrick Garland and changing the Senate’s rules to easily confirm Trump’s picks.”

Woman threatened businesses with violence in the wake of the Club Q shooting. She got arrested.
A 40-year-old woman named Sharon Robinson has been arrested and charged in connection to threats made against Colorado LGBTQ+ businesses in the city of Denver and the county of Glendale. Robinson allegedly made threatening calls in the weeks following the Club Q massacre which killed five people and injured at least 22 others. --- Related Stories Lauren Boebert says LGBTQ+ people are “degenerates” in calling for North Face boycott She is upset about a drag queen’s wholesome Instagram video announcing a Pride event for The North Face. --- In her calls, she used anti-LGBTQ+ slurs, threatened to “shoot your bar up,” and said, “You’re gonna be shot up like Club Q,” the Department of Justice (DOJ) reported. Get the Daily Brief The news you care about, reported on by the people who care about you. A grand jury indicted Robinson, finding that she “intentionally selected her victims because of their actual and perceived sexual orientation,” the DOJ added. Such targeting could cause her to face hate crime charges which also carry higher sentences. Robinson appeared in court on Wednesday and was released on a $50,000 bond, Chicago Public Radio News reported, and will be prosecuted in Colorado. She is barred from traveling outside of New York City and Long Island except to Colorado for court. The Club Q shooting occurred in the early morning hours of November 20, 2022 in the city of Colorado Springs, home to Focus on the Family, one of the nation’s oldest anti-LGBTQ hate groups. Anti-LGBTQ+ right-wing media figures like Tucker Carlson, Matt Walsh, Steven Crowder, and others alternately denied responsibility for fomenting hatred against queer people and said that LGBTQ+ people caused the shooting by allegedly supporting non-existent “child genital mutilation.” The suspected shooter, Anderson Lee Aldrich, faces more than 300 charges. Aldrich’s lawyers say that they identify as nonbinary and use they/them pronouns. They planned the attack in advance, prosecutors said, making a map of Club Q and visiting the club at least six times prior to the attack. The suspected shooter was taken down by a military veteran less than a minute after the shooting began. One patron stomped on the suspect with her high heel shoes while the veteran held him down. Detective Rebecca Joines testified that Aldrich ran a neo-Nazi website featuring a white supremacist training video glorifying mass shootings, and posting an image of a Pride parade with a rifle scope on it. They also used anti-LGBTQ+ and racist slurs while gaming.  After the shooting, President Joe Biden (D) sent a letter to the bar’s owners expressing his “deepest condolences” and stating the need for “a ban on assault weapons” and “other common-sense gun safety measures.” Six months later, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) signed four new gun control bills into law. Club Q announced that it would reopen in fall 2023 with enhanced security measures. Survivors of the shooting say they feel hope for the community as it continues to heal from the violence. http://dlvr.it/SphDW9

Despite having won so many games this baseball season (101) the Mets lose the wild card game that would have kept them in the running.  No Subway Series this year.  This: Joe Musgrove, the Padres pitcher is checked for a sticky substance.  Believed to be on his ear. (Because it was red?)  His ears were checked.  Nothing sticky.  The Mets fans become quiet.  Hard to believe this great season is over.
Note: Trump speaks to an eager crowd in Minden, Nevada. (He tosses out those red hats, like he threw the rolls of paper towels to the crowd in Puerto Rico.)  Says, re missing documents, that George H. W. Bush secreted a huge stash in a bowling alley that was also a Chinese restaurant.  Says Barack Hussein Obama stored documents he took with him in “an unsafe part of Chicago.”  It is believed that there are missing documents at Bedminster and at Trump Tower.  Why wouldn’t there be?  It is his insurance plan.  (Just as Rudy said about the “files of documents” he has [really?]...the dirt on Trump. Poor Rudy.)  He wants the documents taken, which he insists are “his”...even the documents he says the FBI planted?

Columbus Day, or Indigenous Peoples Day.  In some parts of the country  (e.g. Philadelphia) statues of Columbus are covered.  Here in New York the Columbus Day Parade (Italian American pride celebration) goes on as scheduled.  The statue at Columbus Circle remains unharmed.
Trump’s lawyers are getting lawyered up.  All of that donor money...Lawyers getting lawyers.
I hear from my sister.  Pics of the kids in Disneyland.  A little note from  her saying that the Brer Rabbit and  “Song of the South” theme at Splash Mountain (a ride) is under criticism and  being urged to change its name because it lacks political correctness. Understandable.   The protesters say: keep the ride, change the name.
Note: Fellow Republicans Rick Scott and Tom Cotton, about as far right as one can get, are in Georgia campaigning for Herschel Walker.  Yes, he paid for abortions despite his strict anti-abortion stance.  But...God forgives...
to be continued
