Lost Tomb Lewks, Part 15: Pangzi Special

Warning: Spoilers for Both Seasons of The Lost Tomb Reboot!

Let’s take a break from Wu Xie’s Lewks to check out some of Pangzi’s best (in OP’s 100% objective assessment) outfits. The Lost Tomb Reboot version of Pangzi avoids tailored looks, preferring a colorful, aggressively casual style that’s a little bit edgy.

Fat Cat

Pangzi’s in-town street wear generally consists of cargo pants, hiking boots, a graphic short-sleeve tee-shirt layered over a long-sleeve tee, a jacket, and jewelry.

The necklace he’s wearing has some kind of teeth? on it? and is similar to (but not identical to) a necklace he wears in Sha Hai/Tomb of the Sea. His tee shirt features a cat version of himself, basically - a cool chubby cat with sunglasses, a tee shirt, and a necklace.

Being happily married to at least one dude doesn’t keep Pangzi from acting like an idiot whenever he’s near an attractive women [OP has this same problem]. 

Usually he’s politer about it, being an incurable romantic, but Tattoo Girl is ridiculously hot, so I guess I can understand his “hey girl” reaction.

Pangzi’s outfit is perfect to wear when you’re trying to impress a woman...

...by pouring hot water over your sexy, sexy boyfriend’s bare chest and back in front of her. Use what you’ve got, right?

Tomb Raider

For grave robbing archaeology adventures, the leather jacket is replaced with a roomy cargo coat with plenty of pockets. The coat is sand camo patterned since they’re going to be under a beach.

His boots are softer and more beaten-in than Xiao Ge or Wu Xie’s. The other guys boots feature a higher toe box and traditional leather styling, whereas Pangzi’s have a flatter toe and more flexible sole. There are probably names for all of these type of boots. *shrug*

This is the perfect outfit to wear when you think you are going to a party and everyone else thinks they’re going to a funeral.

“Hey Tian Zhen, why does Xiao Ge look like he wants to cry? No reason? Whew, glad to hear it!”

The tee shirt part of this outfit features the eight trigrams symbol, along with dudes doing...(*googles*) Bagua Zhang, aka Eight Trigrams Kung Fu, maybe? That dude in the upper right looks like he’s doing (*googles some more*) the Hawk pose, anyway.

This is a good look to wear when you are trying to stop your husband from adding another twink to his collection.

Layered Looks

The layered outfits that Pangzi and many other characters wear for their adventures are a good costuming choice for a show like this. When a character is going to be in a tomb for several episodes, that means they’re in the same outfit for a really long time. 

Being able to take off layers as they go means that they can keep the visuals from becoming static. Once the coat comes off, we can see the long-sleeve tee shirt that Pangzi’s got on under his yellow short-sleeve tee. 

If they stay in the tomb long enough, everyone will get down to their underwear, presumably. They get rescued before that happens, alas. 

Comfy Time

At home, Pangzi sticks with the layered tee shirts, but trades out the boots and cargo pants for flip flops and colorful shalwar trousers.

Pangzi is always dressed comfortably when he’s at home, and it’s at home that he is most free to be himself and focus on what’s most important to him.

Home Cooking

What’s most important to him is taking care of Wu Xie, which is part of why this whole “immanent death” situation is particularly unacceptable to him. 

Here he is with Wu Xie in their shared one-bedroom one-bed apartment, cooking a meal in an outfit that plays with gender norms a little bit. 

Most of the outfit is traditionally masculine, and possibly the pink color is, too--I don’t know how (or if) color choices map to gender in China. But I’m fairly confident that the Hello Kitty with the big bow and the big pink flowers on his apron are not meant to convey masculinity. Given that Pangzi’s physical form is a perfect example of a beefy tough guy, these clothing choices create some nice layers in his character. 

A different pink shirt features children’s cartoon character Peppa Pig and a gun, for another mix of sweet and tough. (*googles*) WOW apparently Peppa Pig was banned in China for a while because of association with anti-establishment subculture and gangster values. There’s a whole meme situation with Peppa Pig that I have missed out on until...today. If you want Pangzi’s tee shirt, google “Peppa Pig Society.” The ban was announced in 2018 so presumably it’s been lifted since then, or the costume department for the show has brass balls and/or ovaries.

Mahjong and Corduroy

The Lost Tomb Reboot keeps us on our toes by having 20 great clothing items in a row and then throwing in something like this appalling 1982-style corduroy-and-velour zipper jacket. Someone who didn’t have to go to high school in the 1980s might find this fabric combo appealingly textural, and might appreciate these hideous rich jewel tones. 

I’m featuring this look because the it includes a gorgeous tee shirt that’s got a big allover pattern of mahjong tiles on it. Pangzi wears it when he makes dinner for Piao Piao. 

This tee shirt is so awesome it slightly lessens my rage about this tropey, predictable storyline featuring yet another disposable woman. The Lost Tomb Reboot features THREE female characters who die or sorta-die (one in flashbacks) so that men can have emotions about their deaths. Xiao Bai survived by being a tomboy, I guess.

But it’s a great shirt. Pangzi accessorizes it with an apron borrowed from Piao Piao, that is much more subtle than his usual loud colors, and with a tiny ponytail. This is Pangzi getting comfortable enough to just be himself with Piao Piao; a nice domestic scene for them, tropes be damned.

Hello Gandalf

My favorite of Pangzi’s pink shirts is this hoodie, which features Hello Kitty Gandalf--another meme. This is a good outfit to wear when you have pissed off a powerful person in your community to the point that he has you sealed in a box for shipping back to your house. 

I bet this box was really expensive. It looks well made. Nothing but the best for Er Bai, even when it’s just in the service of being a dick. 

Pangzi wears this hoodie with his usual in-town look: cargo pants, boots, jacket.  He accessorizes it with vertical hair and physical comedy.

This is a good look for meeting the newest member of your polycule.

Hawaiian Shirt of Recrimination

In the Rain Village, Pangzi changes things up a bit by wearing a colorful tropical-patterned shirt over a soft grey shirt with an interesting neckline. The neck is notched at the top, and has buttons and buttonhole tabs, but it doesn’t look like the neckline actually opens--the buttons appear to be purely decorative. 

He wears his pointy necklace and a bunch of chunky beaded bracelets with it, and rounds out the look with a thermos of soup.

This is a good look for when you’re feeling crushed and worried and angry all at the same time, and you want to use soup to both nourish and punish your partner.

How dare you be fatally ill and not tell me. Also, how dare you be fatally ill, full stop. In fact, you are not allowed to die, ever. So knock it off.

The Cow Shirt

My favorite Pangzi look is from Tomb of the Sea, even though this post series is ostensibly only about The Lost Tomb Reboot. Chen Minghao is the best Pangzi, so I can cheat a little for him. (Words I will say to my husband, should I ever meet Chen Minghao)

Tomb of the Sea Pangzi’s looks are a little less casual and a little more fashion-y than Reboot Pangzi’s, featuring button-up shirts and some unusual patterns and tailoring. 

This look features a cow-pattern black and white untucked button-up, under a distressed brown leather vest.  He accessorizes the look with a pointy necklace similar to the one he wears in Reboot, chunky bead bracelets, and with fancy flip-flops that he uses to menace baby Xue Yang Su Wan.

His hair is worn long, with a genuine-looking beard and a moustache. 

He looks amazing.

Chong-Qi has long dark purple hair with a bluntly styled fringe just above his eyes. Peeking out of his head are a pair of darkly colored antennae. His eyes are a stormy gray with a pale complexion. Attached to his back are a pair of big-like wings. Both appendages are attributed to his bugfolk heritage.

Chong-Qi wears the standard Royal Sword Academy student uniform consisting of a white and blue gold-lined button up top with the royal blue pants. Across his chest sits a blue sash with golden trimming tied in a neat bow. The pin containing his magic stone is attached to the sash. He wears a sleek black pair of dress shoes.

Personality:

Chong-Qi is a very expressive individual, gesturing his emotions and opinions. He maintains a very strong moral compass, wanting everyone to be on the straight and narrow. Due to his unwavering loyalty to those he is close with, he will go along with anything.

Background:

His early life in Jingci-cheng was not an easy time for Chong-Qi. He was born mute. Growing up with this disability was a struggle, but he refused to let it keep him down and pushed onwards. Younger than most children, Chong-Qi, through his determination, manifested his ability to use magic and soon enough his Unique Magic followed close behind. Once his admission letter to Royal Sword Academy arrived, he wasted now time and was whisked away to Sage’s Island.

Abilities and Unique Magic:

Due to his bugfolk heritage, Chong-Qi is able to detect noises and vibrations, feel, and smell with his antennae and fly with his wings. However, his flight is very limited to a short distance, time, and weight.

Chong-Qi’s Unique Magic is called “Just For Luck”. His magic acts as a temporary buff. After signing his incantation, he rubs his forearms together, creating a reverberation. This sound enhances the physical and magical abilities of those within the vicinity.

wait.. i’m literally on here or weibo almost 24/7 ( as you can tell lol ) but I feel like i missed something. i’m seeing clowning related to xz’s photos and how it looks like he is a groom and it’s a wedding photoshoot. the place is also famous for wedding shoots ( allegedly, idk. i’m not from there ) so turtles are imagining again. lol. freakin coincidence that wyb’s GRA photoshoot was done at a wedding shop. plus the “wedding outfits” for weibo night. which is all clowning and galaxy braining.🌌

now, we’re joking around, like where’s yibo? he should be taking photos with his partner.

then i see comments that there is this one song WYB recently listened to. meaning, as recent as when XZ flew to singapore which is called 超人不会飞 (superman can’t fly) by Jay Chou. i know WYB and everyone else is a big fan of Jay Chou but the clowning comes from the timing of when he listened to it. let me get to that first.

turtles are interpreting it as WYB longing to “fly” to where XZ is and be with him but he can’t because of all his work commitments. he wants to take a breather. thinking about what his life is and the constraints, and at times like this, when they spent days in Beijing, but now they have to be apart, it affects him even more.

however when i read the lyrics, it could also be because he can relate to what jay chou is singing about. here’s the english translation i found here. i have bolded the ones i felt like WYB relates too. literally no need for explanation. just read it. It fits with his status in life so much that it’s almost scary.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with how cpfs are relating this to cpn cause that’s just how it is. But sometimes, there are other reasons why they do what they do.

SO MY CONFUSION COMES FROM HOW THE HELL DO PEOPLE KNOW WHAT HE RECENTLY LISTENED TO. I can’t seem to dig up how or maybe it’s something we don’t talk about. I have never experienced this kind of tidbit related to them before so I wanna know the source. Or is this like the gaming cpn where certain people know and they will not divulge the boy’s account for privacy? if anyone knows, feel free to comment. If i find out in the future, I will share.

穹顶峰 | Heaven's Apex (Domed Roof) Peak

Led by Yue Qingyuan

From this peak, the sect leader oversees the other peaks. This acts as the de facto “capitol” of the sect. They handle politics, outreach, and accounting for the sect as a whole.

2 | Qing Jing Peak | Canon

Led by Shen Qingqiu

清静峰 | Clear and Tranquil Peak

This peak is one of scholars. Part of their focus is on the arts, including the “Four Arts” of Chinese culture. Some of the craft goods made by this sect are sold to the public. They are also home to the sect's artistic library, which includes poetry, philosophy, and other written arts, as well as visual arts like painting.

3 | Wan Jian Peak | Canon

万剑峰 | Ten Thousand Swords Peak

Led by Wei Qingwei

Students at this peak are expected to demonstrate exemplary swordsmanship, but that is only one aspect of their education. Blacksmithing and metallurgy are also a major focus here. The weapons and other craft goods are often sold to the public.

4 | An Ding Peak | Canon

安定峰 | Stable and Settled Peak

Led by Shang Qinghua

Like Qiong Ding peak, this peak is absolutely vital to the operations of the sect as a whole. While logistic, maintenance, and related accounting are not glamorous, they are the foundation that keeps the world stable.

5 | Xian Shu Peak | Canon

仙姝峰 | Immortal Beauty Peak

Led by Qi Qingqi

The only all-female peak. They are known for their focus on grace, elegance, and enchantment. With a strong connection to nature, this peak handles the vast majority of the sect’s agriculture. There is also some basic processing of the produce. Anything that the sect doesn’t need is sold in nearby towns. They are noted gossips, largely due to the amount of time they spend working the fields together.

Chen Qingdi looks like the romanticized ideal of a peasant farmer woman. Though she is adept at combat, she excels in managing the complex operations of her peak. She works closely with An Ding Peak to minimize food waste.

7 | Bai Zhan Peak | Canon

百战峰 | Hundred Battles Peak

Led by Liu Qingge

Though this peak’s reputation is that of brainless brutes, that is an oversimplification. These combat specialists have great martial abilities, but they also study strategy and war history. Even if they are a bit more rough and tumble than the other sects, they are effectively one of the most well-trained armies in the world.

8 | Qian Cao Peak | Canon

千草峰 | Thousand Grasses Peak

Led by Mu Qingfan

Most disciples will visit this peak during their time in the sect. In addition to acting as the sect’s infirmary, this peak is the source of most of the medicine used in the sect. Students are trained in the creation of natural remedies as well as healing itself. As they get older, most select a specialty.

9 | Zui Xian Peak | Semi-Canon

醉仙峰 | Drunken Immortal Peak

Led by Lin Qingxiao | 林清咲 | Forest Clear Smile

In addition to the brewing of alcohol, this peak handles non-medicinal brewing. Most know them due to the alcohol they brew, largely for export. Some, especially anyone on An Ding Peak, consider them to be more akin to mad scientists.

Lin Qingxiao is a jovial man who appreciates creativity in his disciples. He is also extremely strict about safety practices. Woe be unto the disciple that brews without wearing protective gear. Ironically, he rarely drinks in his spare time.

10 | Hu Xue Peak | Non-Canon

虎穴峰 | Tiger Den Peak

Led by Hua Qingzhi | 花清志 | Blossom Clear Will

“Tiger Den” is sometimes used to mean “place of danger” and that is spot on. This peak handles all manner of beasts and animals. Disciples here learn everything they can about these creatures, including how to slaughter them or harvest monster parts. They are extremely concerned with humane treatment of the creatures under their care and often act as a wildlife rescue. Most people assume that they spend all day petting animals, which they generally find humorous.

Hua Qingzhi is a small woman with a delicate appearance. She is anything but. Much of the peak’s recent expansion has been due to her relentless demands. Legend has it that she once wrestled a… [insert the scariest monster the disciple can think of here].

11 | Ku Xing Peak | Semi-Canon

苦行峰 | Ascetic Practice Peak

Led by Guan Qingtian | 关清恬 | Mountain Pass Clear Tranquility

This is the sect’s only all-male peak. It is true that prospective disciples must request the peak, but their standards are also extremely high. Disciples here learn to disconnect entirely from their body, existing outside of their physical form. Additionally, this sect is responsible for maintaining the sect’s protective arrays.

Guan Qingtian is an odd man. He demands a lot from his disciples. Despite the belief that the peak’s small population is due to lack of interest, it is partially due to the peak lord’s willingness to remove pupils who are not meeting expectations.

12 | Xing Ji Peak | Non-Canon

星纪峰 | Star Discipline Peak

Led by Xin Qinghao | 信清昊 | Trust Clear Sky

This peak is home to the sect’s historical archive. They are also adept at highly specialized curse breaking and are known for their interest in astronomy. In addition, they practice divination. Belief in the efficacy of their practices varies between people. This is partially because those few who are welcomed into the peak’s ranks are sworn to secrecy.

Xin Qinghao is… well, first of all, nobody is entirely sure if Xin Qinghao is a man or a woman. They are most often referred to in feminine terms, but they’ve never actually said. This is endlessly amusing to them. Rumor has it that, with one look, they know every secret you’ve ever held.

Love and Redemption Rewatch: ep. 1

I genuinely love and adore this show but with how little content there is for L&R, I had to made some for myself.

Beware of SPOILERS for the whole story! Seriously...

I'm so excited!!! The opening song is still so good and still so full of spoilers. Like really, Si Feng with the wings??? The creators were not afraid... it was a choice.

Who do we have here? Yep, they have shown our bird and our monkey right off the bat.

The whole opening monologue is such a great misdirection! They even say it - one comes after the other! But the viewer expects two players, so this very suspicious setup is completely disregarded.

Wow, they really show everyone, don't they? :)

The concept of soul AND primordial spirit was very hard for me to grasp the first time, but rewatch makes it quite clear.

I swear I have seen this guy somewhere...

Yep, it's this guy from The Journey of Chong Zi.

This is ANOTHER great misdirect because we know that God of War and Star of Mosha are going to be reincarnated at the same time and OF COURSE Si Feng is here... so who could he possibly be, am I right? :)

And another great thing? The demons genuinely don't have the most important information either. :D

I almost forgot that they need Rahu Ketu's weapon to unseal the cup... all these macguffins to keep track of.

And this ist how the story tells us that Xuan Ji and Ling Long are twins... pretty easy to miss.

Ten months?? That's quite post-term!

Ling Long is amazing from the start. Protective older sister is something I need more of... and Ling Long is fierce!

The introduction of Min Yan is also on point: the only one who can keep up with Ling Long and never leaves her, but at the same time is always backed into some corner by her.

He is regretting it already... :D

Ling Long is talking about all these "handsome men" she gets to meet and Min Yan is not amused...

I have questions! Are all of these golden winged birds?? If so, do they really cast out so many potential warriors? To fend for themselves in hostile world without their powers?? That's rough AND wasteful...

I can't decide which picture sums up the Master of Li Ze Palace (does he have a name???) better, but I love him and his terrifying claws.

The bird lantern! There truly is foreshadowing for everything, if you know what to look for!

Yuan Lang's and Wu Zhi Qi's "friendship" is so interesting to me, because sometimes Yuan Lang almost looks like he means it... but the powerplay always comes first.

Wu Tong goes from awestruck to smirking in 0,2 seconds and then proceeds to bully the sister of the girl he likes... it's actually quite realistic.

I honestly can't remember when Si Feng stops stammering... I will have to look out for that.

Ling Long isn't afraid to say it. :D

Min Yan still isn't enjoying the whole "let's look for handsome mysterious guys" vibe, but Ling Long has him figured out.

The relationship between these two is extremely enjoyable right from the start. :)

I think this is the scene that made me definitely fall in love with Ling Long. She is determined, driven, protective and smart, and she is not afraid to use tactics like this - the crying and evocation of their mother is extremely well done and the way she immediately cuts her crying once she gets what she wants is hilarious. No one can mess with her sister, not even their own father!

This is a very specific morning routine. It can't be easy to make your tea from dewdrops fallen from a plum tree... just saying.

This relationship is off to a very bad start.

I already forgot how hostile Si Feng was at the beginning. I would feel bad for Xuan Ji, but she doesn't mind...

Si Feng is repressed and Chuan Ji is absolutely clueless about everything and it's very entertaining to watch. :)

The candle dragon sounds are genuinely scary.

This is a very impulsive decision on Chuan Ji's part and one she should have thought out better. She knows the rules, knows that the mask is important. What is she hoping to achieve by taking it off? It frustrates me a little, this lack of forethought, but the story needs it to get moving.

And here is another clue... wow, that's quite a lot for episode 1.

One episode was enough to rekindle my love for most of these characters... this rewatch could get quite annoying unfortunately . :)

Who do they love truly, 100% unconditionally (if anyone)?

Bouquette For Bou, there is not a singular person, just different types of unconditional love. For platonic, it is a four-way tie between Cater, Roche, Sonne, and Trey (in that order). For romantic, veering into CanonXOC territory, she loves Riddle. I previously touched a bit on their relationship in a muuuuch earlier ask (Here).

What would they do if stuck in a room with the person they’ve been avoiding?

Nadiyya and honestly I did a reroll because it gave me Bou again That room has just turned into a panic room. I cannot really think of a person she would be avoiding, but overall, she would be panicking and doing her best to ignore and be ignored.

Who do they like as a person but hate their work? Vice versa, whose work do they like but don’t like the person?

Kore Oooh, the Classical Studies girlie gets the "love the art, hate the artist" question. Too lazy to come up with the Twisted Wonderland equivalent of Harry Potter, so I am just going to say generally she does not like just outright bigoted people and on the flip side, works that make her uncomfortable.

What common etiquette do they disagree with? Do they still follow it?

And now for the final question~ Chong-Qi Chang Hailing from Jīngcí-chéng, an obviously East Asian-inspired location, one common etiquette that he does not care for is "respecting one's elders." He still follows it, because it is expected of him, and obviously some elders are more easily respected than others.
