Coral and Finger Mushrooms
Don't have a lot of photos of these, but they're neat. Photos mine, unedited.
Tumblr media
Artomyces pyxidatus, the crown-tipped coral mushroom, is edible and a neat texture in soup.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clavaria fragilis, fairy fingers, are also edible but I didn't know what it was at the time of the photos and so haven't used them yet.
Tumblr media
Clavaria zollingeri, violet coral, is edible as well, but I didn't know what this was at the time either and haven't seen it since.
Tumblr media
Xylaria polymorpha, dead man's fingers, are great in frittata! This is the stage you want them in. I really should photos of a full flush, but I always get excited when they come up and start picking. lol You can see the stumps of some I grabbed.
Word of caution: cook all wild edible mushrooms before eating. Even if they don't poison you immediately they can have longterm effects.
Word of ethics: leave a third of the young ones you find in the wild and only if there are a lot of them.

FOTD #012 : violet coral! (clavaria zollingeri)
violet (or magenta) coral is a coral fungus in the family clavariaceae. the fruit bodies can grow in solidarity, in clusters or in small groups on grassy spots. it occurs in australia, new zealand, north america, south america, & asia (including brunei, india, & korea) !! rare in europe.
the big question : can i bite it?? edible in small quantities !! large amounts can cause stomach issues.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
c. zollingeri description :
"the coloring of the fruit bodies is quite variable, ranging from violet to amethyst, or violet shaded with brown or red. the colors may be variable over the fruit body; in one instance the outside branches were brown while the inner branches in the center of the bundle were light violet. dried specimens may lose their coloring almost entirely, as the pigments may be sensitive to light or dryness. the fruit body is typically 5 to 10 cm (2.0 to 3.9 in) tall & 4 to 7 cm (1.6 to 2.8 in) wide. the stem, or base, is short, & the branching starts a short distance above the ground. the surfaces of the fragile branches are smooth & dry; the branches are 2–6 thick, typically with rounded tips."

"WOWiE !! soo i love these guys. 🤍 i've not seen *this* specific type of coral iRL yet, but i love coral fungi. the bright colour is so striking too !!"

Day 2's prompt for #funguary2024 is "Lilac Coral Fungus" (Clavaria zollingeri). It can be be found on different continents, though it's more commonly in North America.
My characters for this prompt are conjoined sisters "Ly" and "Laq." They specialize in martial arts and classify as something between a monk and paladin. Towering over the rest of their teammates, they are happy to deal most of the meele damage on the battlefield, using their strength and staves of holy light to tank through most fights. While they both share a serious nature and intense connection to their spirituality and training, Ly tends to be more socially engaging while Laq tends to prefer quiet observation. They genuinely get along and work together in unison, blending their similarities and differences to become an absolute powerhouse of controlled force.
But don't let their intimidating stature, skill, and personalities stop you from getting to know them. They are fiercely protective of those they care about and are not afraid to relax around those who have earned their trust.

Sleepover Saturday yay: A few weeks ago I moved into a nicer place and today I'll finally get a bed. It's so peaceful to live alone now. My worm bin has more space on my balcony, and there's no one to stop me from brewing sooo much kombucha! (Btw do you have a favorite mushroom?)
Oh yay!!! It's always nice to be able to properly settle in and get to your projects! I hope they go well say hi to the worms for me!
I do not have a fave mushroom for eating but in aesthetics its Clavaria zollingeri which apparently tastes similar to radishes

Various species of coral fungi.
The term ‘coral fungi’ is a distinction that has no basis in genetics, and is instead only based on the morphology of a fungus. As such, the term is applied to a range of genera. Here in Aotearoa, we have over 100 identified species of coral fungi, which are distributed over 10 different genera.
The first and second photos are of fungi in the genus Clavaria, which are some of the only coral fungi in Aotearoa that don’t grow into branched clumps (one species, Clavaria zollingeri breaks from this).
The second photo is likely in the genus Tremellodendropsis, but I cannot say for certain.
