WIP excerpt: mdzs/cql/untamed punk rock au

here’s a brief, completely unedited excerpt of a totally out of context scene from the impending punk rock au I’ve been threatening the discord server with for weeks.

feat. wangxian, ambiguous song lan/xiao xingchen/xue yang vibes, late night fist fighting, and a lot of swear words

Xue Yang completely lays Song Lan out before anyone can pull them apart. Lan Wangji, who has been the entire punk scene’s unofficial bouncer for more than a decade, sweeps him up neatly into a standing arm lock. He gradually forces him down to his knees, but Xue Yang won't stop yelling, his whole body tense like it's been electrified, eyes wide reflecting the halogen gleam of the streetlights like fire.

"Motherfucker, I'll kill you, I'll rip out your tongue and feed it to you, fuck you, I'll fucking murder you," he yells as Lan Wangji pushes him down, immobilizing him with his own full bodyweight.

Xiao Xingchen's face has gone completely bloodless, he's cradling Song Lan's bleeding face and Song Lan is shaking his head, no, he's okay, he doesn't need an ambulance. And then, wildly, unbelievably, he leaves Song Lan's side and crosses the ten foot chasm of the parking lot to where Lan Wangji is still holding Xue Yang down.

Wei Wuxian doesn't really understand that choice at all.

Xue Yang is shaking and his teeth are bared, like an angry animal. Xiao Xingchen reaches out to him, toward his face, and for a second Wei Wuxian thinks nonsensically, don't do that, it'll bite your whole hand off. But Xiao Xingchen just cups his slender hands around Xue Yang's jaw, cradles him with absurd, merciful tenderness like a dark reflection of how he had been holding Song Lan until a moment ago.

"Sweetheart," he murmurs, and Xue Yang's fierce, angry face doesn't change at all except that tears immediately begin pouring down his face.

"Fuck you," he says, and then in the exact same tone of voice but infinitesimally quieter, "Don't leave me again. I'll fucking kill you all. Don't leave me."

Xiao Xingchen slides his hand back into Xue Yang's long hair and pulls it, hard, tilting their foreheads together. It makes his whole body relax, and Lan Wangji releases him as he collapses forward into Xiao Xingchen's arms. Across the parking lot, Song Lan rubs at his jaw where Xue Yang hit him the first time. He's bleeding, but there's a soft smile on his face as he watches Xiao Xingchen hold Xue Yang. Then, Wei Wuxian understands, at least a little.

Lan Wangji walks back over to Wei Wuxian by the door. He stops beside him, just far enough that they're not touching, just close enough that Wei Wuxian can feel the heat radiating from the back of his hand where it hangs at his side, an inch away from his own.

Wei Wuxian looks up at him and Lan Wangji doesn’t look back. He’s still staring at Xiao Xingchen and Xue Yang. Wei Wuxian doesn’t mind. It’s the kind of soft stare Lan Wangji has where Wei Wuxian knows he’s still there in the corner of his eye. He doesn’t need eye contact anymore to know when Lan Wangji is there with him.

“I was gonna tell you to bring them inside before someone called the cops,” he says lightly. “But I guess you had it handled. Unsurprisingly. Such good form on your arm lock, Lan Zhan, I’m so glad to know you’ve been practicing all these years.”

“Xiao Xingchen handled it,” Lan Wangji replies. “Not me.”

Wei Wuxian smiles at him. “Always so modest. When will you let me compliment you? The longer you go without accepting my compliments, the more I’m going to give you, you know. It’ll be awful, you’ll be so miserable, you should just give in. Hey, what are we going to do about the Coffin City reunion over there?”

Lan Wangji turns then, averting his eyes just in time to politely create the illusion of privacy as Xiao Xingchen presses his lips softly to Xue Yang’s forehead.

“They’ll be fine now. Song Lan drove them here and he will drive them home,” Lan Wangji says, but he’s smiling just a little too, and it’s his Wei Wuxian only smile. “Let’s go back inside.”

Wei Wuxian restrains himself, barely, from taking Lan Wangji’s hand as he brushes past him on the way back into the venue. Someone’s set just ended and a river of punks are heading toward them, out to the parking lot to smoke. Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Xiao Xingchen drawing Xue Yang back up to his feet as Song Lan wraps a careful arm around them both.
