Did all the medieval nobles in real history have castles like in ASOIAF

All? No.

Castles were very expensive to construct and the right to crenellate was jealously controlled by the monarchy, so it was generally the wealthiest and most powerful among the nobility who had them.

However, a little bit lower down the rungs of the nobility, you had noblemen who could afford to build a castle, but not the crenellation tax that the king collected as his fee, and thus you got "adulterine castles." (To use a modern consumer goods analogy, these are knock-offs compared to the "Gucci" of a licensed castle.)

Yet further down, your broad middle of the nobility would most likely have a fortified manorhouse - which is taking the manor house, the one thing that pretty much all medieval nobles had by definition, and essentially building a thick walled extension and other defenses (like moats or ditches) around the manor house that let the residents withstand a bandit attack or brief siege.

So it's more a spectrum than a binary of castle vs. no castle.

The walls of Ba Sing Se are inspired by the Great Wall of China. Like Ba Sing Se’s walls, the purpose of the Great Wall was to protect the territory from outside invaders. Both walls acted as garrisons for the army and as vantage points from which generals could direct troops. Ba Sing Se’s walls and the Great Wall were also both built with sand-colored bricks, connective fortresses, and crenelated exteriors. However, Ba Sing Se’s walls are much thicker and taller than the Great Wall.

Fun Fact: Contrary to popular belief, the Great Wall of China is not one continuous wall. It refers to a series of walls that that were built over many time periods and dynasties across the historical northern borders of Chinese states.

tdp jailer cosplay part 1 of 3 - initial planning, design and coat

this was a very challenging and ambitious project for me - but i'd do anything for you this blorbo, okay? we've only a couple end-credits art and the 4x04 and 5x05 glimpses to go on, so i had a lot of freedom to be creative.

i used the costume pattern from simplicity # 8482 as a base and made... lots of modifications from there. just... miles and miles of sketches and pattern paper

for the color scheme, i decided to model it after kpp'ar and callum's character design (too thematically delicious not to) navy, black, and maroon, with brass and beige accents.

coat sewing progress:

faux suede and a jersey knit for the outside, and a coordinating fabric for the lining.

bottom of the coat - left pic is the lining (showing the wrong side; so many corners means so much fusible interfacing) and right pic is the outside. miles and miles of edge and topstitching:

top of the coat - lining and contrast detail:

yeah so fucking proud of myself for lining up all of these seams, only to have to cover them up with the bias tape.

key shape/crenellation detail on the bottom hem:

i struggled to find a color that matched with the stripes, so i ended up ironing out the bias tape and patching them together. it took three days to make and attach both of them ;_;

so many right angle corners. truly a nightmare project to sew. ilu sewing machine

looks fucking amazing though, if i do say so myself.
