Re: rarepair Hell. I would like to know how many pits we mutually occupy, so. Could I get a list of like, idk, your top ten (based in enjoyment level) rarepairs? And/or headcanons but I would prefer "and".
okay i'll assume you mean dragon age specifically MFDSKJFSDKJF but okay, i'll list some!!!!
the obvious ones:
fenders (fenris x anders) : i love a good narrative foil
zevistair (zevran x alistair) : idk if this counts as a rarepair but!!! their canon flirting banters always make me go sooo insane. that you can include zevran in the foursome w alistair if alistair is hardened (lol) makes me INSANE. they are basically canon aND YET!!!!!!
warden x loghain : ive written so much abt them already. you get the idea
nanders (nathaniel x anders)
the less obvious ones:
anders/merrill (bonus: anders/merrill/isabela): for all the same reasons i ship fenders (which i would argue is still relatively a popular pair, so not quite rarepair??); they're such good mirrors, they're both encapsulate what the other fears. anders being 100% okay to hurt people despite being a healer vs merrill being a blood mage who has never wanted to hurt anyone is just *chef kiss*. you can take a look at this for more compelling reasons to ship them.
fenris/merrill: for all the same reasons as above. i think if u dont ship each individual LI of the kirkwall polycule w each other, u shouldnt say u ship the kirkwall polycule.
solavelyan / soladaar / soladash / solas x non-lavellan inqs: i still think it should've been a romance option for all inqs tho i suppose they didn't really have the time to develop a non-lavellan route for them, but i love thinking about it, and i love the vibes for it so much. again, i love narrative foils, and i think it's so natural to be drawn to someone who could understand you like that.
alistair x bethany: a not-templar and a not-circle mage, in the wardens together. i think they'd really like each other and have a very interesting kind of energy!!! they've both got these secret bitter/spiteful sides to them, there's a lot of parallels (like alistair thinking warden conscription is a good thing bc it was for him and bethany having v different emotions abt being a warden in general). i've also really enjoyed most of the fics i've read for them.
nathaniel x f!cousland: UNFORTUNATELY THOUGH i dont think i've been able to find the kind of fic i want for them in the tag. i've got too many wips as it is, but maybe one day i'll write the nathaniel/f!cousland fic of my dreams...
nathaniel x anora: this one is admittedly @rosella-writes' fault, but they've got me by the THROAT as a concept
m!hawke/cullen: LIKE ESPECIALLY IF IT'S ONE-SIDED FOR CULLEN it's something that can be SO fascinating to explore (esp in an amell worldstate). [shaking cullen] babygirl what is WRONG with you!!!!!!!
m!hawke/sebastian: sebastian grappling with his admiration for hawke vs his chantry vows but THIS TIME make it mlm..... i think this is probably baby vee coming through w how hard i used to ship d/estiel in the early 00's LMAO. fsr they hit the same beats in my skull.
morrigan/leliana: noooo girlies don't fight haha <3 they should dump the warden and kiss instead <3
josephine/the iron bull: i read a few fics for them that admittedly captured my interest. i think their dynamic is something that could really be interesting to delve into for so many reasons. i've read the evidence and i find it compelling enough to put on this list

Give me Cullen when the inq has been wounded and cullen goes to visit her quarters to "pass on some reports" but instead stays to look after her and do the Soft Dabbing With a Warm Damp Cloth thing and he's so gentle despite the rough hands and he's gently moving her hair away from eyes and tucking it behind her ears and when he regretfully has to leave the inq asks him to stay and he's BEAMING so he sits down next to the bed and the inq says she wouldn't mind a bedtime story so he leans forward and tells her stories from his templar days and from his childhood and his family and she falls asleep to his voice, curled up in a ball facing him and when she wakes up the next morning she opens her eyes to find he's not next to her anymore and she's???? actually really disappointed so she lays on her back and looks around the room to find cullen walking in w breakfast and he hadnt gone after all and h n g

(me, seeing any ask game you reblog, rushing to go send one) anyways uh for the character breakdown, how about either Leliana Dragon Age and/or Paracelsus Darkest Dungeon? Whichever you'd prefer, or both if you'd like!
ok ok that’s honestly such a compliment oh my goddd
for leliana:
How I feel about this character: my favourite character in the franchise, hands down. she recognises her privilege and actively works against her internal biases in origins, leading to her support of briala in inquisition. she supports mages basically the most out of any other non-mage character. she’s bi and open about it and really really pretty. she acknowledges that the chantry needs to change and actively works to change it. anyway i would die for her.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: basically any ocs, but cousland and surana in particular! i also ship her with isabela, alistair, anora, and briala. leliana x fiona could be cool, too.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: my female amell who romances alistair. also, hawke and anders. i hc that she helped varric hide hawke, especially since my hawke romanced anders and supported him until the end. idk, i just think she and hawke would get on well.
My unpopular opinion about this character: i personally prefer hardening her than softening her, especially in origins. i feel like, narratively-speaking, it makes more sense for her to be hardened in origins and softened in inquisition. i prefer her to go murderpope in inq mostly because i think her faith can blindside her, and i feel that that’s the safer option, especially regarding free mages and elves.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: marrying the warden, if romanced (and they’re not on the fereldan throne)! also, i wish she would tell cullen off, especially considering her very radical pro-mage stance (which i wholeheartedly approve of). yeah, leliana’s my comfort character.
for paracelsus:
How I feel about this character: i love her! she’s not my all-time fave in darkest dungeon (that would be either dismas or bigby) but i love her attacks, style, and backstory so much. i’m gonna get back to my fic soon, i  s w e a r.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: oh, uh *checks notes* audrey, junia, alhazred. mostly audrey, though. but i also hc para as polyamorous (she strikes me as the type to completely tear down societal boundaries that she sees as pointless) so i get the best of all worlds!
My non-romantic OTP for this character: para and bigby! i just want them to appreciate science together. plus, para probably wouldn’t be as freaked out about him as most of the other heroes. she’s much more level-headed.
My unpopular opinion about this character: i really don’t like her with baldwin. it screams doctor taking advantage of a patient, which is so unlike para and just downright wrong. para and baldwin both seem like they’re very professional, serious people, so any romance between them feels very out of character in my opinion.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: i really wish we had the opportunity to delve deeper into her backstory and see her relationship with the other heroes, especially junia, alhazred, and bigby. she deserves friends, dammit.
as always, thanks for the ask!

No one messaged me about it but I admit my response about misogyny was a little off the mark. The callout post was mostly about alleged racism but you can’t deny that “this woman artist draws raunchy sex and I think she should stop” is straight up misogyny. “I don’t like how other woman authors write Cullen/Inq scenes and they should all stop and write it the way I want” is absolutely based in misogyny.
The articles I linked are still useful to read, as ship shaming, fic bashing, and the explicit or implicit shaming of women expressing themselves sexually via fan content is still rampant in the Dragon Age fandom. Saying things like “x mlm ship is for cishet women/only cishet women ship this” is misogynist and also homophobic to people who are not cishet women who ship that. Heteronormativity is a problem, but you cannot shame women (or anyone for that matter) for creatively expressing themselves. You don’t know their life, you never will. And they don’t owe you anything.

Confession: I see so few people commenting on the romance with Blackwall. I've tried to romance others (I successfully romanced Cullen on a female Inq) but my heart always belongs to the stalwart black bear. His story, his character, even his banter are more heartwarming to me than any other relationship. Trevelyan x Blackwall, that's my OTP of Dragon Age.

OMG, how quick
Because I think Varric would have some sympathy for him, even though Samson doesn’t want pity. It also seems to me that Samson’s past with mages (and Maddox) and his general attitude to Chantry could also win over a few people. There are some fics, when it turns out that in the Inquisition there are a few mages that Samson once saved. What do you think about this? Take your time: D (2)
If I can add something to these conversations about Samson - I have an AU in my head in which it is not Cullen or Samson who becomes the commander of the Inquisition, but Cassandra - which means that there is a free place for a person with a templar specialization in the team, if you know what I mean. Why not for a gentleman who knows both mages and templars very well? His personal quest could be about Maddox, and I personally prefer Samson’s average look from da2 over inq and what a mess he is.
Hey so first of all: thanks for the asks!
I apologize ahead of time if there are any glaring mistakes / incoherences in what follows x— as I said in my earlier reply, it’s been a long while since I played Inquisition, and my knowledge of the lore is probably very faulty by now. Even when I played the game, I had favorites among the companions… and others I didn’t take with me as often.
Also, I’ll be focusing on the main cast and ignoring the Jaws of Hakkon and Descent DLC, because I couldn’t be bothered to play them and am therefore in no position to run my mouth.
ANYWAY!
I think the people most susceptible to feel sympathy for Samson are the ones who have history with him, or a similar background… or just such a different take on reality that they can overlook his obvious Villainy™ lol
I agree with you, Varric would probably feel for the man, if only because they met in Kirkwall (bonus point if Hawke was left in the Fade and Samson can serve as a reminder to Varric). I think Blackwall and the Iron Bull could relate to him, both because military background and shitty deeds committed in the name of a greater cause (or just plain guilt, cough Blackwall cough). Cole, too, might be able to overlook Samson’s most problematic actions, because who better than Cole can understand Trying To Help And Doing Harm In The Process?
If we’re looking at this like a “from warm and cozy to cold shoulder” scale, I think Josephine would fall somewhere in the middle; she’s pragmatic enough to appreciate whatever Samson might bring to the Inquisition, should he choose to, but I don’t know that she’d feel much sympathy for him.
Even though they’re mages, I’m not sure Dorian and Solas would get along well with Samson. Solas would probably be curious about what Corypheus has been up to, but I think he’d have little sympathy / interest for the fate of the red templars. And I feel like Dorian and Samson really don’t have much in common at all so it would be a bit of a cultural clash.
Then I feel there are characters whose views and backgrounds conflict too strongly with Samson’s actions to allow for respect and friendship (at first). Sera would fall in this category, I think; whatever sympathy she could muster for the red templars’ fate, she would not forgive farming red lyrium out of people. Pro-Chantry characters like Cassandra and Leliana would obviously have A Lot Of Thoughts about Samson’s actions; so would Vivienne, because of her views on Circles and Templars.
The fun part of fandom’s what-ifs is connecting the dots canon ignore, though, and all these interpersonal « obstacles » could absolutely be overcome, in the hands of a good writer. Nudge, nudge.
As for the 2nd part of your ask - I’m 300% in favor of Samson redeeming himself by working to help the Inquisition; not because I like the Inquisition (there’s honestly so much to unpack about it) but because I care one hell of a lot about Samson and want him to have the best years he can have, and rotting in the inquisition’s dungeons is not gonna accomplish that. Being one of the Inquisitor’s companions sounds like a good option tbh. Although I have to politely disagree, not on him being a mess, but on his DA2 skin being overall better - whether his DA:I appearance Fits My Type™ or started it *hides pictures of sad, balding, middle-aged fictional men*… I dig it.
Sorry again for taking so long and thank you for dropping in with Samson feels 💜

Do you have a favorite non-Lavellan x Solas ship? I guess it really depends on the character, but for the broad strokes each other background brings, is there one with *chef's kiss* potential dynamic?
am i allowed to say solas is my fandom bicycle or are we as a society not ready for that statement MGDKGJDGJ
ok well!!!!!!!! SPECIFICALLY, i've read some very compelling bull/solas stories. if ur out there making bull/solas content, i am kissing you on the mouth. similarly, i haven't found content i like for it yet, but i've been tossing around a cullen and solas dynamic in my head - i think there's a lot of stuff there, especially the cullen/meredith and solas/mythal parallels, as a potential starting point. i'm also really fond of extremely angsty bad ending solas/felassan, but that doesn't necessarily have to be a romantic ship or a sexual ship (and i think they've known each other for so long that whatever is between them would be Bigger than that anyway. is that a siken reference? i think it's a siken reference whoops).
in terms of non-lavellan inquisitors, i love thinking about mage trevelyans and mage adaars with solas - i specifically think he feels quite a lot for mages, whereas he seems to feel really disconnected from elves as a people in the beginning of the story, so it would be such an interesting bridge. i also love thinking about warrior trevelyans, and i think this is sort of harker's fault for brainwashing me on the dash constantly with protector warrior/mage dynamics, and i think all the time about how startling it would be for solas to have a human non-mage explicitly be like i would protect you since the reasons for that would be incomprehensible to him.
i'd also be interested in non-inq ocs with solas but i haven't delved into it yet... soon >:)

Rating: Mature
Word Count: Haven: 256,723 (complete), Adamant Friends, Faded Lovers: 51,727 (in progress) (So, BIG.)
Warnings: Major character death in AFFL (Here Lies the Abyss, yo.)
Pairing: Cullen x Inquisitor (FemMageTrevelyan), Cassandra x MaleRogueTrevelan (the Inquisitor’s cousin), Lavellan x Solas?? Krem?? (unclear). Hawke x Anders & more.
Summary: Kate Trevelyan, mage and earnest, genteel nerd, travels to the Conclave with Colleen Lavellen, an ex-Dalish-turned-librarian, and Robert Trevelyan, her charming smuggler cousin. But when the Divine’s peace talks explode, Robert falls in with bad company, Coll finds herself chasing mercs, and Kate becomes…the Herald of Andraste? Sort of. Kate has absolutely NO idea what she’s doing, and her growing attraction to a certain former templar isn’t helping.

So here I am in the bathroom, wondering: "what if Cullen had the runs?"
He lives in a tower separate from the main castle and his bedroom is in the second floor where you'd need a ladder to climb down.
Thoughts?

Half the World Away (Adele x Cullen)
She rested her head on his chest, shadows creeping into dimples by way of precious few candles. Like this, Cullen was in a world where nothing mattered except the woman smiling up at him as they lay together. Adele raised a hand and his gaze followed her slender fingers as they weaved lines in the air, stroking stars visible through the hole in the roof.
“What are you doing?” A hint of a chuckle crept in his words and she blinked wide doe eyes at him.
Adele retrieved her hand, eyes flicking away from his. “I was…tracing the sky. It was all I could do for years: reach towards stars that shone in the outside I could not know.”
“Show me.” he said and took her hand, steering it towards the sky once more.
They remained that way for a moment, trembling fingers supported by steady ones. Adele exhaled and pointed towards one bright cluster of stars.
“Judex - a sword. I am no expert, so I cannot say for the life of me what it represents.”
Cullen watched as she carved pictures out of the sky. Adele’s eyes widened and lit up more with each constellation she found. He watched her, enraptured by her burgeoning passion and pressed his lips to her forehead. They were alone with the stars and he hadn’t seen her so happy in a long time.
“It’s a childish practice,” Adele murmured with a face stained with embarrassment, “but I find it hard to believe that anyone can neglect beauty hanging above us with no admission fee, no price.”
Cullen let himself linger on her eyes and cupped a burning cheek in his hand “Yes. I suppose I am lucky to be able to recognise this beauty for myself, then.”
Her lips parted and a nervous laugh bubbled out of them. “I would not have it any other way.”
“Neither would I.”
